She is a pretty good and easy teacher. There are lots of classroom discussions and she does not grade the essays very hard. Research paper can be on any topic.
she is great. helped me out a lot. very understanding and i got an A.... :-)
Alot of class discussion. Willing to help in papers.
She is really good teacher. She is a hard grader, but she will help you with your papers. She is very fair and open-minded. Very, very willing to help you.
she is a really neat teacher and very open and helpful
An excellent professor. Understanding, helpful, down to earth and very intelligent. Sometimes allows essay revisions. Highly reccomended.
Good teacher, be prepared to talk about your feelings every day.
She is an excellent teacher, very intellegent. Makes the lamest literature pretty interesting. Be prepared to talk, and she is very liberal, so be prepared to defend yourself if you're conservative like me :)
She tries to sound smart but it just doesn't work for her.
Very interesting class. I developed my writing skills more than i ever thought i could. An easy class. i got an A and normally i dont get a's. She lets you revise most of your papers and is very helpfull. She is the best english teacher i have ever had!
She is a very knowlegable professor who obviously loves her job. She really cares about her studebts and the knowlege they take away from her class. She wwill teach you to think in a way you have never been asked to think before. Dr. Bell makes ENG 202 so
If all you want to do is talk about feelings in class and read a few really bad books this is the class for you.
She really helped me with my writing skills. I could clearly see the difference from when I started to the final paper that was due. There is a lot of discussion in the class, but she is very helpful and always willing to meet with you.
She is very flexible with work, and very understanding. She is helpful, but likes to use the word "convoluted" in every other sentence...I loved the class! I recommend her to everybody!
This was one of the best teachers I have had at Palomar. She is very interested in the subject. She is a pretty leniant paper grader. If you don't want to read LITERATURE and analyze it, dont take 203, take 202. If you do, I highly recommend her.
Dr Bell is great!! Be prepared to learn from deep discussions in this class. Sometimes the lectures tend to go off on a tangent but that is what gives this instructor her character. You will work hard for your grade but she will be there for you every step of the way making sure that you get something out of this class>
You definately have to work for your grade in this class but Andrea is a great teacher and is very helpful in developiong your writing skills.
She was incredibly passionate about her work. Very emotional. Understanding. She inspired me to really try to write well. I wrote some of my best quality papers in her class.
Great teacher and very passionate about her work. Allows you to edit some of your essays for a better grade. Very helpful, explains the information well, funny and interesting. If you do the work, participate in class discussions and take advantage of the help she offers you'll do great!!!
I loved her!! I disovered a whole new side of literature I never knew existed!!
I am currently taking this class right now and this is the best teacher I have ever had. The class is from 6-9:30 and she manages to keep me awake and engaged because her lectures are very interactive and interesting. She choses very good literature for the course and essay topics that are very broad and easy to write about. Simply the best.
while she was clear and helpful, she really hates for you not to come to class. she will help you a lot and she is very passionate about what she does. She will push you to do more. Very forgiving. but if you ever want to leave early she WILL give you the third degree and she will not be happy. Basically if you need to leave early don't come. No XC
She is the coolest English teacher. She grades mostly on content and really encourages creative thought. She is kind and encouraging. I recommend her to everyone!
Over dicusses a book that you have to write on. You do a lot of reading and writing in this class. She didn't really help me much in this class and she is very bad about giving you graded work back to you in a decent amont of time. If you love to read and write then she is a good teacher to take. She is very opionated and acts like opion only matte
If you think discussing memoirs for four weeks is fun, have at it. Make sure you like being reprimanded for thinking differently from her. You'll have to respect her theories that if two people disagree, there is more than one truth. Oh yeah, everyone is special and everything is a coping mechanism.
I've always gotten A's in eng until this class. The material isn't more difficult, the professor just can't grade fairly. She tries to change your whole paper with her opinions and even gets confused about facts that were actually in the book. Once she even proofread my paper said it was perfect than gave me a c+b-! This lady is whacky stay away
Nice enough teacher and very dedicated to what she teaches. But incredibly inconsistent,. Our class graded our rough drafts with little feedback from her, we were constantly confused about what was due the next week. We spent 5 weeks talking about one book and week and a half on another. Oh yeah, apparently memoir is the only genre in literature.
She is very dedicated to her work and she is very good at what she does! Her class helped me find a whole new person in me. I really enjoyed her class and I think that she is a GREAT teacher!
This teacher is very confusing. Our class always had to ask eachother what and when things were due because she could never keep track of it herself...useful if your class wants an extended deadline because she never knows. However, the books she chose were very interesting and I suggested them to my friends. Okay teacher, even better books.
she is a sweet and intelligent woman, but i can't really learn from her. she knows her stuff, but she doesn't really seem to help me much when she points out your mistakes and what not. i greatly respect her and knows wonderful books to read. i've at least learned to derive great meaning from literature but also life's situations.
I took her for English 201 (one of my favorite classes ever!) and 203 (made a bear of a class interesting). Great at facilitating literature discussions.
She plans a bunch of stuff but doesnt get to it all. She's a nice person but grades pretty tough. Definitly read the books, if you dont the essays are hard to write. Grades are determined only from your essays and class participation, she likes it when you talk so just be part of the discussions and you'll do fine.
Andrea Bell is an awesome professor. Best teacher I have ever had. Great class discussions. Really cares about her students. She's not an easy grader, but you learn so much from her.
Coolest professor ever! This is my third class with Andrea and I am sad that it's probably the last. Best professor I've ever had. Andrea is incredibly smart, kind, and funny. I love coming to class and I love writing now. Andrea Bell teaches students to think. She has made an incredible ndifference in my life. Don't miss out on her class.
She is a free spirit. She needs to be more assertive in that, if you don't do your homework, you won't be repromanded by her, but you will suffer at your own hand and your grade will reflect it. Know how to write a good essay!!!
Andrea Bell is not only an awesome teacher, but a wondeerful human being. This is my 3rd class with her and I will miss her when the semester ends. She is funny, kind, smart, and passionate about literature. She loves teaching and it shows. She has changed the way I look at the world. Andrea Bell rocks!
Kinda scatter-brained, always forgets. When you do your first draft she gives good advice. She liked my first draft, when I handed in the final paper she tore it apart. I feel she grades to her opinions. V E R Y deep discussions on the books, all of the books are depressing; abuse, suicide..drafts or final essay due each wk. No tests. Grades hard
Doctor Bell is a wonderful teacher. She is very passionate about the books she assigns. Classes usually consist of talking about the book we are reading. She makes literature interesting and easy to understand. Is always open to hearing others opinions and never puts them down. Don't take this class unless you can handle reading dark themes.
Dr. Bell is amazing, shes interesting, helpful, passionate about subjects dicussed, engrains the text in your head so writing is easier, your grade is not just based on essays so show up to class even when she doesnt take attendance and do all assignments this could bring you up a letter grade, i had her for eng 100 too and im gonna miss her teachi
Take Dr. Bell's class!! She is a wonderful and passionate English teacher! She truly cares about her students and makes English enjoyable. She grades fair and is always available for help. Participate in class and meet with her outside of class for essay help.
Andrea Bell is a teacher I will remember forever. She is funny and deep and one of the smartest people I have ever met. She has an amazing way of expressing herself that kept everyone engaged. Best teacher I've ever had.
Dr. Bell is an intriguing and intelligent teacher. The books she chooses are very intense which make class discussions interesting. Her ideas and opinions have really made me view life differently. Her lectures are fascinating and they really open up a new world of literature for me. I highly recommend this teacher if you want to learn!
She helped me many times during office hours. She tries to help the student and really does care about literature.
Amazing. awesome professor. Great sense of humor. really wants to know students and cares about them. Everyone feels comfortable. Great fascinating class discussion. Even 4 hour night class whizzed by, I loved her class and will never forget her.
caring, funny, smart. Andrea is passionate about teaching and about literature. Changed the way I think. Because of her I am becoming an english major. I took her night class and looked forward to it every week. I love listening to her talk. I learned so much about writing and about myself from her.
I figured this class couldn't hurt me. Wrong. She knows literature and what she's talking about, but her grading seems arbitrary at best. Peer reviews may give me very little to correct, but then I'll get a C. Plus, the vague comment "be more descriptive" hurts more than it helps. My C became a C-/D+. Redeeming factor: you can re-write a paper.
It's true: you spend a lot of time talking about feelings. But we only met once/week, so it was totally bearable and fairly enjoyable. You get a re-rewrite on your essays, so the class is an easy A with effort. And, if you hate fiction, we read memoirs (autobiographies written in a novelistic style).
She makes you reflect on the books you've read in ways you would not have originally thought of.
She is an absolute doll. We read a lot of fiction and the books were.... different but enjoyable. She chooses each one for a reason after all. She's fairly helpful if you just ask and has a lot of patience. She's also quite firm but comical. Your essays have to be well supported and use as much evidence and analogies as you can.
She is so awesome. Intro to Lit was a class I enjoyed. Everyone really liked her! I will definitely take as many classes I can take with her!
Great Class. She had some great explenations for stories! Grading was hard but fair! I reccomend her!
Easy A. Read the books, & you'll ace the test. She never remembers when she's assigned something, so you'll rarely turn in homework. I could've gotten an A without going to class at all but she gives you the 3rd degree if you miss class, come late or leave early. Very opinionated & even more close-minded. Ignores you if you disagree with her.
Andrea is the sweetest teacher in the world. She is so passionate about english. She cares about her students so much. She wont move on in the chapters unless your are ready. you do have some homework but she isnt crazy on when you need to turn it in. i love her would take her again!
Professor Bell is a wonderful teacher! She cares about everyone, and loves to teach! We read some of the greatest books in her class. I took this class with my boyfriend and we both still rave about her!! Few assignments, Essays (1 research) and lots of reading, but a whole lot of fun!
Admittedly, I've taken and dropped a couple English 202 or 203 courses because I was just plain bored. I love to read, and the novels that Professor Bell brought into the class were very interesting and enjoyable. She's a pretty tough grader, I use to get really good grades on essays without trying and with her class, I REALLY had to try, but becau
Took this class last semester and there was lot of reading almost too much grading was hard. The teacher was moody close minded and only liked the kids in class that kissed up to her. She made it uncomfortable for the kids who where more shy. She was also rude and publicly insulted kids for not doing homework...worst class and teacher ever
One of the best English teachers I have ever had! Very passionate about literature. I you like discussion and don't mind writing, take her class. Doesn't make you talk if you don't want to. Her class was mainly discussion of the books we read (about four). After each book there was an essey and then a research paper at the end of the semester.
I don't know how she is getting so many great reviews.. All she wanted to talk about was suffering and how essential it is to the human psyche. I'm a fan of literature, good literature that is. But I was so miserable I just stopped going. Do not recommend.
Professor Bell is passionate about what she does. All you have to do is read the material before your lecture and participate in the discussion and you will do fine. She is very understanding and willing to help you, like I said communication is the key. She is great and I would take more classes from her if I wasn't transferring.
Hard Grader...Not very open-minded...Very picky...
She gives a hand out of questions to answer based on the book read & want elaboration. But she doesn't really want to hear what, you the reader, got out of it. She wants to see if you go what she wanted you to get out of it. If you are struggling with a reading she will work with you, but you have to communicate with her.
Dr. Bell is a great professor! i really learned a lot and grew as a writer. she's quick to help her students and wants everyone to succeed, however this is not an easy A class. if you're willing to read the novels(3-4) you will pass! :)
AmAzing!
While Mrs. Bell is certainly intelligent her class has many flaws. First, reading some pretty bad and pretentious books (mostly dealing with nagative themes). Second, you do nothing but talk, so if you're shy you can't really participate. Third, her grading is extremely inconsistent and she never makes it clear what she wants. Avoid if you can.
There is a lot to learn from Dr. Bell. She is quite at ease with her students, their comments and views. Be prepared to experience reading as you never had before, a real eye opener.
She is a very intelligent professor. She forces you to look at things you in ways you normally would't. She is not shy about talking about taboo subjects. You MUST participate in this class or else she will lecture you on participation and become VERY angry and offended. I looked forward to this class every day and will be taking her again
This English class has so much too offer. I'd say it was one of the best classes I have taken at Palomar. Prof Andrea is extremely talented and inspiring. A recurring idea central to all of the texts she chose for my class was that suffering is needed for joy; so naturally the books were quite dark yet impactful. I recommend this class to anyone
I thoroughly enjoyed the class I had with Prof. Bell. The books were interesting enough...like any English professor, she seems to like originality in essays. Can you imagine how boring it would be to read the same thirty essays semester after semester? Therefore, I would suggest putting some thought into the texts, and trying some new angles.
Wonderful professor. Hard grader but extremely helpful and patient. She allows rewrites for almost all of the essays. Truly appreciates class participation.
Consider yourself warned if you don't have the patience to follow through deep probing analysis or long run-on sentences. If you're not an avid reader or enjoy reading, you might fall behind quick. She offers insights and eye-opening observations that help you find a thesis for your essay and enjoys class discussions. Don't try to BS, she'll know.
She knows what she is speaking about, however Dr.Bell can be very confusing! She tends to go off on tangents and talks most class periods! she is a hard grader if you do not try to do well on essays. So I suggest you give it your all of first try, she does allow revisions, but she can be very picky! I recommend you participate & use her office hour
Dr. Bell is a great help to anyone who wants to learn to write better. She is a little picky but makes valid points about my writing. Her goal is to help you learn. Speak up in class because she grades on participation. Good books, good discussions, and by the end my writing was also good. Recommend
Be aware that if you don't share the same opinion you're screwed. I got a B even though I participated in class and got As and Bs on my Essays and participated so that was upsetting. It's a super easy class as long as read, do the work, come to class etc. But don't be surprised if you didn't get the grade you wanted
This is a class you need to work at, but if you take the time, it is very rewarding. Dr. Bell is a very caring open minded individual who is committed to all students. She is very available for those seeking extra help or input on assignments, and she allows rewrites.
I truly loved this class! Ms. Bell conducted interesting and thought provoking discussions and encouraged you to really search for a deeper meaning in literature. We read 3 novels throughout the semester and wrote analytical essays on each. If you read the book and aren't afraid to speak up and join the discussion, you'll do fine!
Took her 202 Eng class. Coming from Eng 100 the previous year, and acing the class, this class was a completely different story. Thought my writing was strong every time, and got back very low Cs averagely. She is nice enough to let you revise it for a better grade, but can still be hard to increase your grade. Worked very hard and got a B.
Professor Bell is amazing. I loved this class so much. Lectures felt like a book club, sharing your thoughts and insights. I used to be shy but she brought me out my shell. The whole class became friends with one another, and I never once felt embarrassed or nervous to share my thoughts or ask a question. The books she chooses are all so amazing.
I was always a very good writer up until I took this class, she is an extremely hard grader and vague on what she wants in your writing. This class made me very discouraged about writing and I was always stressed when turning in a paper. Overall, she is a great professor with deep thoughts but her grading is unfair!
You will have about 6 text books and will be required to write papers on all of them. Don't expect to get a good grade for any paper. She changes her syllabus every class period and makes her assignments confusing. She makes you do "free writes" and they don't count towards your grade if you do them, they can only hurt your grade. Very tough.
As someone who dreaded writing, Dr. Bell's class was a comforting place to be. I actually loved the thought-provoking lectures and discussions, they stimulated my mind and made writing easier. If you like finding deeper meanings in literature you will enjoy this class. I got a B in Eng 100 (another prof), but an A in this class!
Dr. Bell is a great teacher, a bit confusing at times though. Do yourself a favor and be prepared to read though, to be able to participate in class. If you show you care and want to comprehend the material, she returns the favor. If you are passionate for writing and reading, and prepared for a challenge, consider one of her English classes.
Dr. Bell is a very straightforward professor who expects a lot from you as time passes on in the semester. You read 4 books in the class and write an essay on each of them.. She's a very tough grader, yet leaves lots of comments to revise the essay. With that being said, she's very critical on revision and sometimes won't improve your essay grade.
Dr. Bell is amazing! There are no tests in her class and she grades essays very fair! She makes you do a rough draft and then she'll help you and spend her time with you to make sure you can get the grade you want on the final draft. Loved this class! If you do your work and show up to class you can get an A!
Professor Bell teaches in a way that truly encourages learning. I would recommend Dr Bell's Eng202 class to every person who enjoys writing, and discussing writing. Dr Bell is probably the best instructor I have ever studied under.
Dr. Bell is a gifted teacher. She allows students to craft their own learning experience from her courses; she teaches what the class wishes to learn, not what she wants them to know. Best professor and mentor I've studied under. If you go to her office hours beyond the expected, you will be blessed with guidance. A genius of the heart and soul.
Maybe it was because I took this class as a freshman(also the only frosh in the class) but this was a LOT of work. The class moves at a good pace, but you have no time between books and often i was reading the next book while trying to write my paper for the previous book. Speaking of which, expect to write anywhere form 6 to 10 papers.
One of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Infinitely funny & wise. I have no complaints about her. We were assigned 4 novels, all of which I enjoyed. Wrote a 4-5 page essay plus a free-write or 2 for each book. Otherwise, homework was minimal, & there were LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Thoroughly enjoyed Andrea's class.
I had an excellent experience. Some are saying her grading is awful but I had no issues; perhaps it's a taste/style thing. Loved her in-class discussions. We read 4 books which seems like a lot, but they weren't difficult reads & she took a lot of class time to dive deep. Very passionate, inspiring & helpful. I felt like I learned so much of value.
Very critical on grading. Overall a very nice person. But grading is a bit tough. Be prepared to read a lot! the books are really good choices.
She's a pretty fair grader and gives good feedback. Lots of reading and essays, but overall the class wasn't too bad. Only complaint is that she can drag on and on and her lectures are pretty boring. I thought the class was easy, but just didn't like her as a professor. I'd often want to skip class because I got so bored with her.
Although Professor Bell is extremely philosophical and wise, her class is quite frustrating because no matter how hard you may try, you wont get out of the class with above a C. She is extremely tough in her grading and then does very little to help you improve. You also read a ridiculous amount. Love her as a person, not as a professor.
At times, her lectures are interesting. However, they're super long and just boring. We read 4 books and 4 essays. I honestly have no idea how she grades the essays.. She does give written feedback on your essays; however, it doesn't really help.. She also doesn't have a canvas.
Her lectures are very philosophical about the readings, but she does tend get sidetracked sometimes. You will feel lost if you dont keep up with the assigned readings. Her grading is very critical. Take this class if youre confident with your writing skills.
She chooses extremely dark books and grades tough. This whole class is reading and writing. Not a lot of homework but essays are tough for me so that was a major drop to my grade.
Andrea Bell is unique. She's eclectic. One of the better classes I've taken. Prepare to read at least 3 books and write a long essay for each (maybe more). A LOT of discussion regarding the works. Take notes b/c she or a student might have a perspective that'll help your paper. Most important: PARTICIPATE. Add your two cents. She appreciates that.
If you like boring lectures that are a total waste of time (you could litteraly not show up and still complete her assignments) but you still have to come to them, buying books to complete assignments, working with a teacher that contradicts her own assignments, doesn't know to use canvas properly, and more! Than this is the class for you :)
Just stay on top on the work and the readings as well as participating in the lectures and discussions. Always be prepared and take notes here and there.
Dr. Bell is my favorite english teacher I have ever had. She truly cares about you as a person, and explains things well.I loved the novels we read, and she made me feel confidant in my writing. She eveninvited me to be apart of a book club after the semester ended. She made coming to class worth it everyday.
This class is 50% discussion and 50% essay writing. I loved it. Participation and note taking makes all the difference and Dr. Bell LOVES reading and writing. You can tell and she wants to get to know her students and expand their love for the subject as well. Put in effort in the class. The books and readings are really good and mind opening.
Took her a few years back and distinctly remember how bad this class was. It is EXTREMELY difficult to get anything above a C. Lectures were long and boring-- they simply did enhance any new knowledge into my writing. I don't recommend her unless you're willing to participate everyday. On top of that, any feedback she gives is extremely vague. Gl.
