She is alright it is just I had her at 830am and no one sounds good that early. The only problem is that for 142 winter '10 she had all multiple choice midterms and final which made it difficult to pass.
Good lecturer, keeps class interesting. Unfortunately she goes a little too fast for 8:30 am.
She talks really fast in lecture and it's really hard to keep up with what she's talking about. Her exams are really hard. We have weekly quizzes and she only allows 15 minutes to do the problems on the quizzes that require more than 15 minutes. You would have to sit with a group of people to finish the quiz. It is impossible to finish it yourself!
Can't believe she's teaching CHEM 152! Ahhhhhhh! I wanted to major in Chemistry, but after taking her class, I don't know if I'll be able to anymore. My grades are going to be so bad!
My only problem with her is that she went way too fast for a 8:30 lecture. I think she's dedicated to the class though, she rolls out 20-slide powerpoints for every lecture (she posts them as pdfs online so we can print them). The pdfs didn't help me learn as much as they helped keep me awake during lecture though.
She tends to solely read off the powerpoints which can be very lengthy and boring. She goes way too fast in the material she covers and doesn't get around to teaching all of the homework till the day it is due. Her tests are impossible, her quizzes are rigorous and lengthy and her class made me reconsider my major.
Very nice prof, keeps class interesting with occasional flying candies. Easy quizzes but hard tests. Recommend going to lectures even though she tends to read off of slides-for one of my midterm lots of Q's were straight out from her lecture, that was not on her slides. She prepared me for Chem 237! Overall, ok prof.
definitely not not not a good professor. Avoid at all costs!
I am going to be honest. She is a good prefessor. Very dedicated to her job. BUT...teaches way too fast to understand the material by just going to class. need to spend countless hours after class doing the material since she teaches fast and doesnt help you get good notes. if dont have experience listening fast speakers, dont take her otherwise do
WORST chemistry teacher I have ever had at UW. Take ANY other professor. Didn't prepare me for O'chem at all. She can hardly teach and all she does is click through slides...and her tests are way too hard.
A very poor teacher. She doesn't really teach you anything that you cant learn from the book. Essentially she just repeats the text book in class. However I would say if you don't go to lecture you wont pass. The material is at a difficulty level where hearing multiple times is a must. She is really nice, just not the best teacher.
Clear helpful at times. Not the type to try and trick her students. Tests are hard and all multiple choice, so no chance for partial credit. Lectures were helpful but not as much as I would have liked them to be. Overall I found the class quite discouraging, since I found myself studying relentlessly every week all for an AVERAGE grade of a 2.7
very hard teacher for 142.. The average on her final was 99 or 96 out of 200 points.. most of it was because the exam was multiple choice. Would not recommend for 142 or even 152 since 152 is harder then 142.. if 142 was as hard as this imagine the pace of 152 with her teaching AND exams... STAY AWAY!
This is a tough class--the average final grade is 2.7. The class arrangement was very awkward since the only real chance to ask questions was in sections, which were all scheduled a few hours before the online homework was due; not much time to fix problems. It was also so fast-paced that almost everyone was struggling to keep up by finals week.
Extremely hard class. Avg was pretty low. Professor is very past-faced (she rushes through sections without fully explaining EVERYTHING, but there is so much info to learn in one quarter). Felt like she just read off her powerpt. Even if you study like crazy, chemistry content is always hard.
the lecture mostly consisted of her reading off the slides. she is quite intimidating too. a teacher i would not recommend at all. if you have a choice, don't take her. if you do, you are going to be learning from the textbook.
i wanna get a refund of my tuition for this class
Chemistry is always a tough subject but I believe that she was very fair on her exams. I don't think anything was TOO tricky. What I like most is you learn from the textbook, which I prefer. I think it depends what kind of learning style you like. Just visit her at office hours, go to the chemistry study center, and study...like crazy.
She is very dedicated to her students. She makes a class that has PRESCRIBED course content/assignments as manageable as it can be. A lot of people are giving her slack for things that are departmental issues, not professor issues. She has to cover a lot of material, and she does as best a job as anyone can. Her tests are fair, too.
I had this professor for two quarters. She is very hardworking and dedicated. She gives us all her lecture notes (usually before class) and tries to make a difficult and often boring subject as accessible as she can. I recommend brushing up on high school chem or taking chem 120 before taking this chemistry series--it's for premed students!
I had her for 2 chem series and I should have known better than to take chemistry with her again, but unfortunately she was the only professor teaching. She is extremely hard! Her test are probably the hardest I have ever taken! It is no wonder why the average for the class is always a failing grade...
AVOID TAKING THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED!
I had Dr. Carroll for 142, 152, and 162. Yes, she's hard, but it's a pre-med weed-out class. She provides lecture notes online and is very clear about what will be tested on exams. She also has a sense of humor (and passes out candy)! She's very easy to understand and always tries to make sure that she's clear. I would definitely recommend her.
I had Carroll for CHEM 142, 152, and 162. She grows on you because she is a nice person. Even though I didn't do well in the genchem series, it was not her fault. STUDY HER, NOT THE BOOK. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
I had Carrol for Chem 152 & 162. She was horrible for 152 because she just read off her power points. She was A LOT better for 162 & it seemed like she actually knew what she was talking about in lecture. Just make sure your read the chapters and study very hard for exams. Also, chem 162 is way more interesting in general.
Everyone I knew studied like crazy for this class. In my case, it didn't matter how much I studied. I never did really well. But Carroll is a really nice professor. I had her for the entire series. If she didn't know the answer or if there was a contradiction between the book and OWL, then she'd look at it and go over it in class.
This class is relatively difficult. Going to office hours is really import. Dr. Carroll will go over any questions you have until you understand it and she always has a review session before each exam(i.e. extended office hours.) You have to seek out her help though, she will not come to you. It is a large class. Overall she is great teacher.
A decent professor. Go to lectures because she doesn't post complete slides. Midterms are harder than other classes but not impossible. Quizzes are better done in a group.
Very cool.
Dr. Carroll's class was great. Tips for success: attend class - she lectures pretty much from the text book, and she puts together a really good slide show. Although she posts the slideshow online, some of the information is missing due to animation. She's great about sending update emails. She's good about repetition.
I took her winter quarter '10 and thought she was awful at lecturing. She didn't seem to care during lecture whether students understood and I didn't attend her office hours ever. She's scary and really harsh.
Dr. Carroll is the BEST gen chem (142, 152, 162) professor you will get at The UW and I CAN GUARANTEE that I've taken Daruwala AND Chiu. Her exams are very fair and her lectures are so good, you never need to read the book! She is super helpful and interested in whether you learn and is always willing to help and is always friendly about it.
She goes over stuffs very fast, lecture can be super boring, gives out harder mid-terms and final compare to other prof.
Carroll is way more difficult than Campbell. Campbell usually teaches the earlier session but I'll tell you now that extra sleep is not worth a bad grade. Camp.'s midterms and course load was much easier. My friend, from Camp., saw my midterm and couldn't even figure out the first two questions and she 4.0ed Campbell's class. Plus Carrolls mean.
She's nice, but not a good teacher at all. Lectures are boring, and in preparation for the final I studied every practice problem and knew the study guide by heart. Also, I took 2 other professors tests and got a 90% and an 85%, and with her final I got a 41.5%. Questions came out of nowhere and were worded in a terrible way. Avoid at all costs.
she goes through her lecture so fast and i had a pretty decent grade, until her final. the final ruined my grade so much. never taking the class from her. hardest chem prof out of the 3 for aut10.
She's nice and very helpful. Always available. Her midterms were fair, but the final was confusing and really hard.
She's a pretty good teacher overall. Very clear and willing to help students with comprehension. However, her final was really hard. Even with studying all of the homework, quizzes and prior midterms, her final threw a bunch of problems at us that I'd never encountered before.
Extremely hard! Lectures were boring, but homework is okay. Quizzes were doable. Midterms were okay, but final exam is out of this world!! It's so complicated!! Trust me, avoid this professor, she's the hardest out of all the general chem professors!
Her homework was difficult but doable. Her quizzes and midterms were fine if you did the homework. Her final for the quarter was ridiculously hard however. The average was a 51% and many of the things on the test were things we hadn't even done before.
Carroll is the hardest chemistry professor at UW. The averages on all the midterms and the final were lower than those of other classes. The average on the final was around 50%. Homework is all on webassign, but it is manageable.
I loved this teacher. I had Andrea for Chem 142, 152, and 162. She has a system for how she writes exams, and if you figure it out, you will do really well. All of her questions come from book problems, other professor's tests, and her lecture slides. Know these and you'll find the tests extremely fair and reasonable. Good professor overall.
Homework and quizzes are fine, but exams are extremely hard--the mean is about 47/100 on 2nd midterm. Not recommended
Professor Carroll is very nice and sympathized with our 7:30 class, but her exams were ridiculously difficult; the average for both midterms was around 40/100. The quizzes are doable in groups and the homework just takes time, but exams are terribly worded and questions come from subjects we never went over in class.
I don't feel like I learned much at all. Lectures were sped through to get through all of the chapters. Exams were ridiculous. Being multiple choice, I did better working calculations problems backwards from the answers. Studying didn't help for me. Homework on webassign is easy to get 90-100%. Quizzes are reasonable. But you'll fail exams.
Harder than other 142 teachers-tests are more challenging, homework is longer. But class is curved. Tests (especially 1st one) are fast paced. Carroll herself is very helpful in office hours. The class was a lot of work, but I also feel as though I learned a ton. People on here say her final is awful, but I found it quite doable if you studied.
Definitely harder than most Chemistry 142 professors but worth the effort. The homework is longer but the class is curved. Some consider the final is out of this world but I found it lifesaving if you did not do well on the first two midterms. The content catches on fast.
Carroll is a very good prof. She is always helpful in office hours and is very passionate about what shes teaching. Her lectures are very fast paced so make sure you do not miss them. Test are very hard but fair as well. She really pushes you on tests to the point that you need to know all the material inside and out. I highly recommend her.
Incredibly terrible, unintelligent, monotonous professor. Someone standing on the stage reading the textbook for 50 minutes would be more interesting. The class is extremely easy, however. Still, avoid her classes!
She goes through the material during lectures pretty fast. Basically reads off the powerpoint slides. Go to office hours - she's much more helpful there. Tests are hard, do a lot of practice problems.
although she is a very tough prof. she had very good lectures. She explains things well. As long as you study hard and work at it you will do fine in the class. Good luck... you will need it.
She goes through the material very quickly and her test are really hard. The average score for her 2nd midterm was 40%. But as long as you stay caught up on the reading and do lots of practice problems you should do okay.
She hates all the 152 142 chem series thats why she is hella dificult, but she is very enthusiastic about 162. I definitely recommend her if you are interested in taking chem 162. She freaking gave us candy almost every friday haha. Try to take her in spring if you can, the sun puts her in a better mood.
WORST CHEM PROF EVER! NEVER TAKE HER CLASS, THE EXAMS ARE EXTREMELY HARD AND SHE ALWAYS ASSIGNED TOO MANY QUESTIONS IN ORDER TO MAKE CLASS AVERAGE LOW!
Tests were terribly hard. Most of the questions were wordy and had nothing to do with the problems we did in class. Averages on our tests were 50%. Avoid taking her class.
Carrol is a pretty good teacher. I didn't think she was hard.(I also took AP Chem, so first quarter was review for me). As long as you know the material, you should do fine. Her tests are pretty straight forwards - not many trick questions. STUDY ON CONCEPTUAL QUESTIONS - she likes to put those on her exams!
I had her previously for 142. She was a better prof. in 162. She threw candy on Fridays and had lots of demo. Her tests were fair and you can predict what will be on the test. Lots of concepts and pay attention to the figures. Go to her "tutorial sessions" - she might give hints to what will be on the exams!
I previously had her for Chemistry 142 as well. But SHE WAS BETTER in 162! I loved the fact that she held "review sessions" before exams. I also loved the lecture slides where she occasionally put some comics to let us understand activation energy and so forth. But the tests are little tough. But she is a kind professor who cares for her students.
Had her for both 142 and 162: loved her for both classes. She isn't a super professor and you have to know your stuff, but she's very helpful and funny. One of my favorite professors at UW. Make sure to study though.
Carroll is an average lecturer, she basically just follows the slides and every now and then puts in some input. However, her tests are extremely difficult compared to the other professor's tests. They are very wordy and sometimes hard to follow. Expect to do a lot of work for a decent grade.
Carroll is the best lecturer compared to other chem. 142 lecturers. She?s organized passionate and she knows what she is doing. Focusing on basic stuff than complicated advanced materials, it is university-level education, don?t expect easy courses. Even though tests are challenging, just study and know the concepts thoroughly.
Carroll is average. She just basically goes through the slides and does so pretty fast too. But I don't blame her because there are about 8 chapters to learn in one quarter. Aside from that, going to her office hours is really helpful but the tests were more challenging than they needed to be and did not seem to go off of material learned in class.
Overall Carroll's class was alright. Lecture is very boring and quick. Print out slides and annotate during lecture! I found outside of class she was approachable and understanding (I only went to a few office hours, but they were helpful). Also, don't expect to get by without studying. The tests are really hard. The final is the easiest test.
Coming into this class first quarter with no background in chemistry, I was a little intimidated. She'll usually put three or four "trick" questions on the midterms and final. Lectures were fast-paced and to the point. Not that I could remember any of it afterwards.
Carroll isn't the best professor because she gets kind of boring during lecture and goes through her slides really quickly. Her tests are kind of hard, so make sure you understand the concepts fully (ex. do lots of textbook problems because ALEKS is stupid and doesn't help you learn anything).
Although many of my classmates didn't like her, she was honestly one of the best professors I ever had. Her class isn't easy and you really have to study but she was really caring and helpful. Go to her office hours and you'll learn a lot. She's willing to help you with anything you need and she's understanding that you have other classes. :)
Other ppl are definetly sugar coating her. Carroll is really useless !It seems like she gives us a alot of slides and topics then shoots an exam at us She is smart but she needs to go back to teaching school, fails to explain the slides/concepts to us. Honestly, there is no reason to show up in lectures just be prepared to teach yourself chemistry!
Rambles on constantly in class. Rushes through important concepts. Not helpful at all in preperation for tests. Tests are on a much more difficult level than all other material in class. She suggests doing problesm from the book that her TAs can't even complete.
Though Carroll can give relatively tough exams, she is a much better prof then the other GEN CHEM profs. Keep in mind that because the total course is curved, though the average test score may be around a 60%, if you perform averagely, you will still end up with a 2.7. Also she is great in office hours, if you have her go in!
THIS CLASS IS HARD. Be prepared to study a lot if you want to get above 3.0. There were about 570 people in the class which made me dizzy every time I entered the class. She goes through the material really quickly. Labs were better than lectures in my opinion.
Although Carroll may be infamous for her harder tests, but if you do the end of chapter practice problems and understand whats happening, you'll do fine. In general, the people complaining don't seem to do much work anyway, and they set the curve.
Carroll's tests are very very tough, so make sure you have a concrete understanding of the material. She sometimes gets boring in lecture, which makes it hard to pay attention, but it is manageable. Her list of end-of-chapter problems is helpful.. do them.
Her tests are extremely difficult. Reading the book as well as doing the back of the book problems are really helpful. Even doing this though, low grades are likely.
Her lecture notes are really helpful and posted online. Also make sure to do all those pesky end-of-the-chapter problems! The tests are hard (60-70 means) but the curve isn't bad. You'll have to do some studying, but it's manageable.
She has a monotone, and I did not enjoy her class. She is helpful during office hours, she can also be kind of mean. Tests are difficult only because it's multiple choice and a silly mistake will cost you like 7 points. If you've taken chemistry in high school and you do practice problems before exams, this class shouldn't be too bad for you.
Her lectures were just powerpoints, and were boring. She can come off a bit cold, but look past that, she really wants her students to learn. She doesn't give out practice exams (a pain), but uses practice problems from the book. Do them. Rumors are true: her tests will throw you off-guard.
I took her for both 142 and 162. Her exams are quite difficult and throws you off sometimes. Reading the book will not cut it, learning and understanding concepts is important! In lecture she reads off her slides so go if you want to but you can read the slides at home. Again, study hard for this class. Chem is not a joke.
Terrible professor for chem. Very unreasonable exams that are multiple choice!! Lectures are a waste of time and are very uninteresting so half the class stops going by week 4..
Carroll was helpful and answered my questions, and I thought she did a good job on a subject I don't really like. I think the reason there are so many bad reviews for Carroll is because most of her students are freshman who have never taken a college-level science class, and didn't realize they would actually have to work hard to get a great grade.
I would like to note that this class will destroy your gpa regardless of what year you are in college, unless you're a chem professor it's nearly impossible to get an A.
lectures had almost nothing to do with material learned in the class, aleks was more helpful than she was in learning the material. Problems from the tests were unrelated to a lot of the work that we did in the class and during lectures.
Tests were hard... it's hard to get a good gpa in this class. But she is really nice, and explains well. Everything is "fair game". Lots of homework.
To many, Carroll comes out as a standard lecturer who just zooms through slides but if you go to her office hours, you can tell she truly wants her students to learn. Many don't like her for that reason above, and because her tests require a solid understanding of the material. Be prepared to work hard to get a decent grade! Nice prof though!
She expects you to have read the material in advance. If you don't do that, then you'll have a hard time keeping up in class and you'll blame it on her. Yes, she is very challenging, but you would encounter that with any chemistry professor at UW. I liked that she was very fair and also had a sense of humor.
I looked at all of these reviews and didn't listen. I thought that maybe I was the exception and because I had taken Ap chemistry I could power through the class. I was dead wrong. Although I knew the material, I only did a little above average on the exams. She probably gives the most difficult exams out of any teacher. She was a nightmare.
The lectures are really boring. She repeats materials of the slides, which seemed could be done at home. However, her really wants you to learn something and she never give exam questions that are not related to the core materials. Review slides carefully and do problems on the book she gave you on the course website and you'll do better
I took Dr. Carroll's class figuring a normal amount of effort would be enough (going to class, completing ALEKS objectives, doing well in lab and section) and still couldn't even make a C on the tests. Be prepared to work your ass off if you want an acceptable grade.
I hadn't taken chem since sophomore year hs (I forgot what a mole even was) but after working hard and going to office hours, she rejuvenated my passion for chem. So it is very possible to do well in her class just be prepared to work hard. She truly is a good prof and wants her students to learn, you just have to take advantage of that.
I think Carroll has a sense of responsibility about her lecture. She will send you study guide much ahead of time. There are online lecture recorded which she will upload them every day just after the morning class. I thought the exams will be pretty hard but they are OKAY if you work enough suggested end-of-chapter problems listed on the website.
Okay she was pretty tough. The material covered in 162 was fairly straightforward, she just made her tests hard in the way you actually had to understand the material to answer the questions. Tests were okay, sometimes I felt it was too long compared to the time we had. Do ALEKS and the book problems. Especially the challenge problems.
I did horrible in the course, but despite that I really do feel that she was more than willing to help. I felt that she really did care about her students learning the material. Test are pretty difficult though.
I never realized what a great professor Dr. Carroll was until I took CHEM 152 with a different, much worse professor. Yes, her tests are hard but you get a lot out of her class. Just make sure to do the extra problems she assigns and you should be able to do well.
Prof. Carroll is amazing! She is so dedicated to the students and care about your learning. She has a bunch of office hours before exams to make sure your questions are answered and she prepares you as much as she can for exams. Exams are more than fair. Do the book problems and you will do great!
I had Carroll for 142 and 162, and I've liked her for both classes. She's tough but fair, and she's very clear about her expectations for exams. Don't believe the bad reviews, you'll do fine as long as you're not lazy.
Had her for the summer. Personally, she is a really nice teacher, and is a bit funny. She also took the time in her schedule for review sessions outside of normal hours to go over material/questions from the text, which helped. Exams were tough, and the mean was around 60's but curve helps you. Strongly recommend to do lots of textbook problems!!!!
Boring & unhelpful lecturer
Prof Carroll was a really good teacher! The material isn't that interesting, so it was hard to stay awake in class, but Prof Carroll explains things well & incorporates a lot of examples in the lecture slides. However, tests are difficult and it's almost impossible to finish on time.
Pretty easy if you do all the homework. Incredibly boring course though.
Go to lecture. Do the homework. Read the book and PRACTICE if you need it. That is what you need to do in order succeed, promise. Dr. Carroll is also a really good lecturer. She cares about her students and tries to explain things as well as she can. Don't be afraid to take her!
Carroll was my favorite chem professor so far. Her tests are absolutely fair, and if you study well, you will do well in the class. The best way to study is to make sure you know the worksheets, and I would review the lecture notes and read the chapters. She is very helpful during office hours, use them!
Carroll is a good lecturer. I so recommend that you review the material she will go over the next day...or else everything will just blow right over. 1st midterm was easy, 2nd was hard. Definitely do all the odd book probs she assigns since they have answers in the back. Review wkshts, book probs, and exam topic lists hella for the test.
Carroll is a good professor and lectures in class are helpful. Book problems are a must for this class. She even said on the first day her tests were hard
Practice, practice, practice. She's a good professor and she teaches well, but practice is the key to success in this class. Do all the book problems and maybe even try clutch prep to get even more practice. She's cares about her students and she's willing to help if you don't understand something, but her tests are pretty difficult.
She is very interesting in lectures, most interesting prof I've had for gen chem. She posts lecture slides for entire chapter before lectures, so go over them before each lecture and skim over textbook so you can catch up in lecture. Midterms were okay if you studied (worksheets, prac probs etc) but final was tough!
She is a good teacher. She is helpful and clear on lectures. If you get to know her, she is a good resource in the future. She is very straight forward about what will be on the test, study the pre-exam list of topics and you'll do fine.
I absolutely hated chemistry, but Dr. Carroll is such an awesome and helpful professor that it's more of a slight dislike now. She's definitely the most interesting lecturer I've had for gen chem, and her exams are tough yet fair if you studied. From what I've heard she best prepares you for ochem out of all 162 professors, so def recommend!
Very helpful lecturer, makes tests that aren't designed to trick anyone. Just study the lecture slides and the practice problems and you're golden.
Professor Carroll salvaged the General Chemistry series for me. I hated Chem 142 and 152, but 162 was actually fun! Even though it was at 8:30 AM, I genuinely enjoyed going to lecture. Her style of powerpoint + in-class notes means that she goes at the perfect pace for maximum learning. Plus, her tests weren't particularly hard with practice.
She is a great teacher, very helpful! Also very rational and open minded, she will listen to your doubt and answer it however stupid it may be. Really fun to be in her class, never dry.
The pace is very fast, but that's just college. Professor Carroll is very clear on her expectations, and she is very helpful during office hours.
Carroll is easily one of my favorite chem professors. She is always willing to help and has very fair tests. The key to success in her class is to do the end of chapter problems... ALL OF THEM.
Andrea is a great lecturer. The key to doing well in this class is practicing ALL of the end of chapter problems and reviewing the worksheets. Utilize her office hours because she is super helpful. This was a difficult course so put in as much time for practice as you can. Her exams are tough but she won't try to give you a trick question.
Definitely better than most of the male professors that teach CHEM 142, as they were strict, cold-hearted and tough. She's much kinder, like a motherly figure. Always clear on what is expected and will be there to answer questions, especially during lecture. Even though I didn't do super well, eh, still better than average. Did get a lot from her.
She's known to have tough tests, but her lectures are very clear. I'm glad I had her for my first general chemistry class. No need to buy a textbook, but make sure you do questions in the textbook by checking it out from the library or something because her test questions usually resemble them.
She is fair
Hard class, she makes it clear, but she's not doing you any favors
Dr. Carroll is a great person, and obviously very intelligent, I just wish were lectures were more in depth and explained more rather than just summing up her slides. Great person, tries to make lecture fun and cares about her students. Very hard tests, but if you study and do practice problems you should do fine. The subject is just hard, not her.
All other teachers at UW allow their students a cheat sheet. She made our class memoriez the spinal it rules, polyatomic ions, etc. literally everything. So unfair considering the othe classes get the extra help of a cheat sheet. Spending more time memorizing charges than actually learning calculations and how to do them. Wish I knew before hand.
She's the reason Chemistry is my nightmare!! Hate her class.
Having plenty of chemistry background from high school, this class was pretty easy. Though she moves through the material quickly, I don't think it's at a pace unreasonable enough that one with no chemistry experience will suffer. That being said, you'll want to study for her tests. The problems are definitely not just plug-and-chug.
I realized that Chemistry is NOT my area of specialty, but for those who it is, I highly respect that. For those that struggled, like myself, you constantly have to push yourself and study. Also she doesn't curve midterms or the final, but curves your grade at the end of the quarter. Also, no clickers.
I do believe that her tests were much harder than other professors. It's true that she doesn't allow a cheat sheet like the others but by the time you get to the test, you know the polyatomic ions and charges, SI prefixes, ect. She does give you a cover page of formulas for each tests. Do lots of EOC problems and go to office hours.
I'm surprised by some of the most recent harsh reviews for Prof. Carroll. Yes, it was hard. Yes, we had to memorize more things than others. But the amount of work required was not unreasonable. You get what you put into studying for this class. Her lectures were somewhat rushed, but she's very willing to help, and she was overall a great chem prof
Great lecturer! She is a really great teacher and is fantastic in office hours. The labs were run very well, and TA's well-selected. The class is hard, but it's chemistry. Also, prepare yourself for a few explosions during lecture, and liquid nitrogen ice cream for everyone! (not to mention, tons of candy!)
She is very organized and records all her lecture slides online. She is clear on what she is looking for. Although she didn't allow a cheat sheet for the exams like the other professors, her exams weren't that difficult. Definitely doesn't give enough time for taking her midterm exams. Overall, not a bad teacher.
One of the only Chem142 professors that does not give cheat sheets on tests, has short answer problems on tests, and does not use clickers. Lectures are clear and she has a good sense of humor. She is good at writing wrong multiple choice answers to try to trick you. The short answer problems on the midterm were hard. Do lots of practice problems.
I'd recommend not taking her class because it is difficult to get a good grade in her class because of her multiple choice exams that are worth 6 points each. It is really easy to lose marks in the MCQ exams. She is an amazing lecturer and you'll learn a lot if you go to her lectures but don't take her class.
I would recommend Professor Carroll for chemistry 142. Her lectures were clear, and the tests were fair. In general, chem 142 is a difficult class. However, Carroll and the TAs are very helpful. If you have questions go to office hours! I would recommend not only doing the ALEKS online homework, but also doing the suggested end of chapter problems.
Professor Carroll is an amazing Chemistry teacher! I wished I had her for AP Chem back in high school. She's very clear and concise. Definitely wants you to pass, offers reasonable office hours. Participation matters during quiz section, so make sure you attend that. Also, chemistry is a relatively easy subject for me, but Carroll made it easier.
She's an excellent professor! She understands the conditions and the situations of her students and is willing to help solve problems! Even though she's respected, she has got a very good and kind nature. Don't be deterred to ask questions! Practice matters a lot in her class and practice a lot to pass her exams.
She is an amazing teacher! She is really tough but if you go to office hours and work really hard you will be fine:) She is a really approachable teacher! Office hours saved me!!!!
Lectures are very boring and there's really no benefit to going to class, but her tests are straightforward and simple. The only thing was that they were all multiple choice, so no chances for partial credit.
The tests are very hard but if you're a good student you will do well. Go to office hours! She is extremely helpful. Be prepared to work hard for the tests, do a ton of practice problems.
I didn't have a problem with the material because it was basic algebra and covered material that I had learned in high school, so for me this class was an easy A, although some of my friends struggled. I found it helpful to do the practice problems and read the textbook to prepare for the tests.
Carroll's lectures had 700 students with 30-student quiz sections. Office hours were available all of the time because of the amount of TAs. In order to receive a good grade you MUST DO THE END OF CHAPTER PROBLEMS THAT SHE SUGGESTS. As easy as it sounds and as hard as it is to do, take time out of your day to do the end of chapter problems.
Excellent for 162. However, be careful (!) with fill-in-the-blanks and free response! Always make sure to write what is asked and... the (!) keywords! She is excellent, but sometimes her TAs are not and make sure to assess your TA. Textbook is not necessary at all and ALEKS is useful to mine scores.
Sometimes goes too fast during lecture. DO THE EOC Problems to do well.
Dr. Carroll is very well organized and she tells you clearly what is going to be on the midterms and final, no surprises. Read the textbook, go to lecture, do ALEKS, keep up on end of chapter questions, and go to her office hours. One complaint is that she goes a bit quick in her lectures. Other than that, great professor and manageable class.
Chem 110 is an extremely easy class, especially because it's credit/no credit. I got 100% on every exam and I felt that the tests were extremely fair. I had taken chemistry in high school and I never studied once for an exam. A lot of homework but it's super easy just a little time consuming!
Great professor, very informative lectures. Tests are difficult and long, so make sure you practice doing problems for speed, not just accuracy.
Good professor. Clear lectures. Seems like she has her stuff together, organized.
Her class was hard, I'm not gonna lie, but I would recommend her as a prof anyway. She consistently covered exactly the material we were being tested on during lecture, she was engaging and fun, and she was very available for questions.
Her classes are overwhelming and she's always in a rush because she wants to meet the course plan. Get ready to go through 30+ slides in 50 minutes and have 30 problems assigned per lecture. She assigns useless Aleks topics too. Oh, and if she doesn't have time for more slides in class, she WOULD post them online so you can go through them alone.
Dr. Carroll was a great lecturer and was always very clear about what we would / would not need to focus on studying for exams. She published lists of exam topics at the start of the quarter. Do all of the assigned readings and all of the assigned practice problems and you will do well in the class. Overall very organized and good class.
Her lectures are longwinded and the exams don't truly show what you know. If you decide to take her class make sure you do all your ALEKS otherwise you'll most likely fail.
Use the textbook for practice problems - you don't need to read it. As a grader, she and her TA's are fairly tough - show ALL your work on calculation problems and label everything. (i.e. ApiR^2(3.14)(10cm)^2314cm^2 as opposed to ApiR^2314) As a person, she is very kind and approachable, so attend office hours as often as you can.
This class is a prep course for the chem sequence (CHEM142, CHEM152, CHEM162). Carroll taught the course well. She is brief, clear, and answers your questions. ALEKS, the readings, and the end of chapter problems are a huge part of this course and Carroll will remind you of their importance. You will have two midterms and a final. Study for them.
If you read the book before lecture, go to lectures, and do the practice problems she assigns in the book, you'll do well.
Exams are awful, with barely any time to do them. Lecture is dull and dry. Gets mad at class for packing up, like we're elementary students. "Wait for the bell!" Ask her a question after class and she'll scoff at you. Classmates don't shut up during lecture so best just skip and watch Panopto. Terrible class, dull lectures, tough exams.
Writes the exams with no time to actually take them. Some of the material she asks us she never went over in class but expects you to be an expert. Brushes off topics but asks about them in GREAT detail on the tests. She makes them with the intention of failing students. CURVES TO A 2.7! Missed class once and got a 9/10 on polls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andrea as a person is awesome, approachable, and funny. However, her class is hard. I did all of the ALEKS, most of the end of chapter problems, attended class, and read the textbook before lecture and still did not do well. The labs are longer and more complex than 142 and 152 and the TA's are tough graders on the labs.
Honestly CHEM 162 just sucks no matter which prof you will take. Carroll however, does not give any review material except for book problems so I was left asking my friends for old exams and the other sections for practice material. Exams are much harder than material in lecture, but as long as you understand book problems you should be fine.
Professor Carroll is great at teaching CHEM 162 and her lectures are interesting enough to keep you engaged. No past exams are provided, so you are expected to do the book problems in order to study and do well on the tests. I'd highly recommend looking for past exams though. Overall, attend lectures and do the homework and you should do fine.
Dr Carroll is my favorite chem prof. That includes over Craig or Li. She can come off as not caring but when you go to office hours she is very approachable and helpful. In office hours she would give hints on exams and more clarification. Her directions were very clear and i would have a worse grade if I didnt take her. But you have to WORK HARD.
Dr. Carroll was a really good lecturer; she took the time to answer student questions and taught way better than just the textbook alone. Her tests are hard though, so be forewarned. You absolutely should read the textbook, do the HW, and do the additional practice problems. I did worse in 162 than 152, but that was because the material was harder.
Her exams are tough. Your best bet would be to understand the practice and textbook problems well. There is always a time crunch on the exams.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD IN ALL MY GEN CHEM SERIES, AVOID AT ALL COST!!
Mediocre teaching skills, always leaves important details at the very end of lecture (like 3 minutes left of class and she tells us all the important stuff), and tests are not bad if you like mc (but if you don't, AVOID). I had Chiu for 152 and he was a better lecturer than her. The most helpful thing from her was the polleverywhere questions.
The main problems with Professor Carroll is a lack of exam clarity due to a lack of practice exams and sometimes confusing expectations on exam content (read the fine print on every slide for studying!). That being said, she really still gets the job done and her teaching style is fine. Read the textbook, do the chapter problems and you'll be fine.
Passionate for chemistry and gives real-world examples.
Lectures were straight forward and had lots of visuals. She's really good at giving real life examples! When studying for tests, going through book problems, quiz section worksheets, and focusing on what she says in lecture will be most beneficial for exams. 2 midterms (MC and some short answer/show your work) and 1 final (all MC).
She had the potential to be a good teacher, but she kinda wasn't. She spent a ton of time on things that weren't important and then in the last 5 minutes of class she would rush through the most important parts of the lecture. She also gave us no way to prepare for the exams. There were no practice midterms and the book problems did nothing to help
Overall Carroll is a really good teacher you kinda just have to put in the work. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She is really good one and one at explaining things and will walk you through it as many times as you need. Her lectures usually have some sort of real world application thing which is cool and she is a straight up comedian. Responds to emails FAST.
Normally, we have three lectures every week but she would give 4 lecture recordings. This summer, we are having 6 exams one dropped in the 9 weeks. Lab reports are super tough grading. I got 4.0 in the chem 142 and 152, but I felt so hard in chem162 in her class. No practice exam, tests are much harder than Aleks, time is so limited. Never with her
This is the first online162 she taught and I understand it could be difficult. That's not an excuse to give 4 quizzes in only 8 weeks bro! We were not given practice quizzes and the time was SO limited for each quiz. I hardly had any time to check my work. She also has a hard time explaining the concepts clearly during her lectures. NOPE nope nope.
Bruh she had no business making my life this miserable.
Doing online with Dr. Carroll, it feels like she was more concerned about making the tests not Googleable than making them solid quizzes that test your PRACTICE more than testing your note taking ability. Oftentimes, these tests would have errors in them that shed have to correct later. Good lecturer though.
bruh if you care about your grades, don't take her. she was amazing at making my life a living hell. most definitely a lot of unneeded stress, totally inconsiderate!! like hello we're in a pandemic.
If you plan on taking this course with this professor, be careful when you get the right answer because she might accuse you of cheating for absolutely no reason. Also dont guess because in her little mind guessing is just as good as cheating.
She is a good teacher but can be condescending at times.
Dr. Caroll is super nice and answers every question. She and her TAs had help sessions at 8-10pm which was very helpful. We used ALEKS for hw and it's pretty easy. The quizzes are what messed me up, they are a lot more challenging than the hw.
This class was taught online this quarter due to the pandemic so I get it wasnt easy for everyone. The professor based your grade on the quizzes. The quizzes are TOUGH due to how they are written, so beware. Her lectures are rushed and arent always clear. Go to office hours or tutoring if you need help even if it doesnt help always.
Dr. Carroll is caring but also firm. You wont get any credit for them, but practice the end-of-chapter problems as they are more helpful for the quizzes. Quizzes are hard and questions can be worded in a tricky way. You need to be accurate and fast at calculations. Review and study quizzes. Go to office hours . Its key to succeeding.
I left part of my soul in this class. The quizzes are terrible and the questions were insanely difficult. Overall this class needs to chill
Professor Carroll was always behind on content durning lectures for the whole quarter. If she was less repetitive, and trimmed some unnecessary content out of her lectures then we would have been fine. The quizzes were always a time crunch, she does not give enough time for the number of questions asked. There were 5 quizzes during the quarter.
The most understanding and caring prof I have taken in any weed out class at UW. She is an experienced teacher and has reasonable expectations. If you read the text and are perceptive to her expectations you shouldn't have a problem getting a good grade.
Prof Carroll puts in her best time outside of class during office hours, giving more example problems and concept perspectives. Sometimes lectures were confusing but her repetition is necessary. The things she repeats the most WILL be on the quizzes/exams. The last gen chem series is difficult, but she made it bearable. Wish I had her in person.
Don't take if you are not good at chemistry, hate to think this was a base level class as it was difficult and hard to comprehend and fast paced. Your whole grade is basted on your quizzes which are harder then the material learned in class. If you don't do well on every quiz and the final you will fail. Spent hella time on aleks and was not worth.
She can't finish the lectures in class and posts tons of recordings after. Be ready to watch extra 2 hours of recordings every week.
Poor time management for her lecture, she always has extra recordings apart from the three lectures each week for us to watch. Extremely difficult exams that sometimes you won't be able to finish the exam within the given amount of time.
Professor Carrol couldn't finish lectures, resulting in at least an hour or two of weekly extra lectures on top of an already heavy course load. The exams, worth the majority of your grade, are more difficult than questions presented in class or on homework, and too long to finish in class. It is apparent she believes students take onlty her class.
I like her outside of the classroom, not as a professor. Wanting us prepping us for 152 has good intentions. The execution is sometimes discouraging and terrible. The main thing I don't like is her additional lectures whenever we don't finish lecture. If chemistry doesn't come natural to you, prepare to work really hard.
There are specific things that should be assessed before inputting a deceiving and irrational appraisal of a professor. To pinpoint this assertion, many students will evaluate a professor and blame them, finding a scapegoat for their shortcoming. Professor Carroll was exceptional at maintaining order when it comes to overlooking multiple courses.
Professor was ALWAYS behind and you would have to watch at least an hour if not 2 of recorded lectures outside of class each week. ALEKS takes a while but do it as its really the only way youll learn the kinds of questions that will be on the test. Would avoid taking her if you can but if you cant, you can still do well if you put in the work
A nice person, but one of the most difficult professors I have ever had. The quizzes were nearly impossible to finish within the 45 minutes we got, and the average scores were pretty much always really low. If you aren't already amazing at chemistry this class will be extremely tough
Course had an EXTREMELY heavy workload: lectures, required take-home lectures, textbook notes, textbook note assignments, recommended end of chapter problems, ALEKS, pre-labs (or -15pt penalty), pre-lab calculations & writing, take home labs, and pre- and post- quiz reflections all weekly/biweekly. Little regard for students' time.
I agree with other reviews that it was annoying how lectures were always behind, but it literally was not that bad. She provided lists of practice questions that were extremely helpful because her quizzes were basically taken straight from those and the worksheets. If you do the readings and recommended end of chapter questions, you’ll do great.
Chemistry so much more painful than it could be. Really does not value students' time. This course could be worth 15cr on its own, dominated my entire schedule well more than the other course combined
I had Andrea last quarter, she was very unhelpful when I came to her with concerns about grading mistakes. She refused to take any action to amend said mistakes and my overall grade was negatively impacted because of this. She exhibited little to no care about me as an individual student.
She is incredibly condescending towards those who are confused or need extra help. I took her class last quarter and asked for help during office hours and I was met with dismissive remarks and overall left more confused than I came in. It's upsetting to see a teacher who puts in such little effort with her students.
Dr.Carroll's lectures are interesting and she conveys the subject material well. Her class is difficult because there's a lot of material to cover and concepts can be complicated, but she is very accessible outside of class and willing to help. The tests can be difficult, but are very fair and she provides study materials that are similar to tests.
She is very helpful in office hours and a great lecturer. I would recommend taking her if you have to take 162!!
Dr. Carroll brought good energy to the classroom but always seemed a bit frazzled and as if she couldn't quite remember what was on her own lecture slides which made engaging in the material a bit difficult. We were given 4 biweekly quizzes and a final exam for most of our course grade which was very reasonable and fair. Labs were overall good.
She is a better teacher and lecturer compared to a lot of other chem professors at UW. She can be strict w certain things and wont accept late work/give extensions. She is available for her office hours and adjusted them to better fit majority of students schedule bc many ppl taking chem162 also take introductory biology classes at the same time
Carroll is a pretty tough professor. She definitely knows her stuff, and teaches it well, but lectures are very packed, and takes a lot to catch on. But overall she takes teaching seriously, and that's good.
The chunk of your grade is based on 3 quizzes with one being dropped and 1 final. Her lectures feel rushed so you have to spend time learning ahead to counteract this. There's also no grading curve so you're stuck with your exam grades. Our previous quizzes' average was in the low 70s so you can take it as a good indication of how the class is.
Dr. Carroll is amazing! I really liked her and she had a lot of enthusiasm during lectures. She was good at explaining things and I could tell that she really does care about her students and how they are progressing throughout the quarter. She provides many examples, asks if there are any questions, and uses the class time wisely.
I absolutely loved her, her lectures were very helpful and she made it very easy to understand what was being taught. If you do end up taking this class I recommend doing the ALEKs and reading ahead of time, it gives you a deeper understanding of what the lectures are about.
Professor Carroll lowkey had an attitude most of the time. She definitely knew what she was talking about and she is very experienced with the content, but she was very unapproachable and wasn't a big help when it came to understanding the material. Also the TA's were not a big help AT ALL.
She is very unorganized, showing up to lectures late mostly every day with barely getting the notes posted before class. She never finishes them in time, leading to the completion of ALEKS without actually knowing what the content is. Finally, her pre labs have problems that we have not learned yet due to her unorganized class.
Dr.Carroll is thoughtful and intelligent! She always gives out the way to help students in chem. She is organized and clear about the due dates of hw, quizzes, etc. Quizzes/alesk are average, she strongly rcm reading TB and do as many problems as you can to ace the quizzes.
run.
the most unserious professor ever. you're better off waiting until the next quarter to take the class rather than dealing with her.
Not bad but not great compared to the other professors I've had. Grading for tests is super picky but you do get one test completely dropped. Not a very engaging lecturer- tends to just repeat the info from the mandatory textbook reading so usually a waste of time. HW isn't too bad and tests are mid-level difficulty. Nice but not great at teaching
Dr. Carroll was... fine. Not overly helpful in prepping for tests and her lectures were very similar to the textbook readings- something I did not find helpful. I wouldn't necessarily recommend against taking her class, however, being able to gain a lot of your information from the textbook is an important skill for her classes.
Professor Carroll is a knowledgeable lecturer, but the class can be challenging. Attend office hours, utilize study tools like unstuck ai, and stay engaged to succeed. Overall, a worthwhile course if you're willing to put in the work.
