Fun, nice, easy, teaches well, interacts with students on a personal level, willing to adjust course for students' needs. Trilingual (English, German, French).
Her lectures are hard to follow, and she'll ask your opinion just to shoot it down. I wouldn't take a class with her again unless I had to.
lecture was all over the place. went over some texts in depth while ignoring others. complained about lack of student participation while expecting that when we did speak up we would know the "correct" interpretation. never gone into a final so
She was so dogmatic she literally didn't understand anything that deviated from her own opinion. Expected student participation, and adjusted every comment anyone was brave enough to offer to something like her opinion
Voorhees is excellent, currently studying Baudelaire in Paris, I've had her twice and emphisizes disscussion, open ended in class essays, she looks for originality and creativity in papers, not, "can you tell me what the author is trying to say about..." best prof around for french lit.
A very intriguing and insightful woman. The course is not a cakewalk, but was quite fun.
This woman certainly loved to hear herself talk. Intellectualized everything, and was incredibly overbearing in class "discussions." Class became painful to sit through. You know anybody who writes a book called "Defining Modernism: Baudelaire and Nietzsche on Romanticism, Modernity Decadance, and Wagner" has to be full of themselves.

Wow. This class was something else. When I got bronchitis and went to her to get lecture notes she verbally berated me for not emailing her (when she admits she doesn't know how to use a computer) that I wasn't going to be in class. Spends a whole day explaining otherness, but you still don't know what the bloody h*** it is.
She's a little intense and the lectures were reeeally deep, but it's pretty apparent she knows what she's talking about. The texts we read were excellent, and she gave great feedback on papers. Intimidating when she stares at you during a lecture, makes you feel small. Lots of people complain but I thought it was a great class, though not easy!
This was my second honors class at western. The texts were ones I had always wanted to read, but unfortunately she does not encourage original ideas or creativity. She said this verbatim: "I don't want originality. Just tell me what I told you" (in my paper). She likes to repeat herself. Not horrible, but not good either. Oh, and dont buy her book!
This prof wasn't nearly as bad as everyone makes her sound. If you do the reading and show up you're going to do just fine. 10% of your grade is attendance which she takes randomly and the rest is 3 papers that are based on the reading and class discussions. I think the lowest grade she gave on a paper was a C-. Not a bad class at all.
she really tries to explain what she is talking about but she sometimes can't find the right words and it makes things confusing. she obviously knows what she is talking about but its sometimes impossible to know what she means when she talks.
Showed up every day, sat in front row, paticipated (best I could) in discussions and read all material. About to take the final and I have no idea what I am talking about... Do not take this class unless you have a passion for liberal studies, like only about 3 kids in the class. Very hard to follow. With great effort... still recieve poor grade.
If you haven't taken 121 or 122, and/or if you have trouble making theme connections between texts, this class may be too challenging. If you read the texts, go to class, & have at least some interest in the class, it's actually easy. Her difficulty in finding the right words becomes moot cuz eventually she does find the right words. Tests=few&easy
Class is confusing. With effort and reading of the books I was still left half in the dark. Takes more than effort to get an A in this class but a B is no sweat.
She relies on interpretation which match her own, which makes her grading on papers and tests a bit arbitrary. You never really know what she wants, or what you're supposing to be "getting". Gets off track a lot & caused my head to spin by the end of each 1 1/2 hr lecture.
With just a midterm, a final, and an essay with each worth a third of my grade, it's stressful. If you do bad on one then you're screwed. This class is nothing I thought -- the reading is extremely heavy and she grades ridiculously hard. It's only a 100 level class but she teaches it like a 300 level. NOT MY KIND OF CLASS. Meh.
I think she's a very good, entertaining professor. I took her Western Tradition III class and she was very enthusiastic about it.
Andrea is great
Enthusiastic, engaging teacher
professor has written a book about modernism so be prepared to accommodate her slant on tests and the essay, also make sure to cite sources. one of my classmates was accused of plagiarizing a response during an in class test. although she did later rescind it.
Extremely conceited. Unclear about assignments. Will not respect you if you don't participate in the asinine class discussions. Has a knack for talking, much less one for producing valuable insight. Trust me, her classes are going to wreck your GPA.
Definitely a slight language barrier, english is not her first. But very willing to help. Even encouraged me to follow my own ideas on essay topic. Lectures are sometimes a little convoluted, but she hands out guides on lecture and texts, so as long as you go and read, should be no problem. Encourages debate and participation in class.
Look, I see a lot of you bozos complaining about Prof. Gogrof-Voorhees, not all, but enough to ellicit comment. I am now a graduate student in Comparative Literatur at the UW. Looking back on my time as an undergraduate at WWU, Andrea was certainly one of the most intense and creative thinkers. Can't keep up with her cognition? Try reading!

Overall, I enjoyed her as a teacher. She definitely has her own opinions about thing, which sometimes makes it a little challenging to speak up in class, and she grades pretty hard, but also gives good feedback on essays. There were a few days I couldn't wait to get out of class, but in general, I liked her. Good sense of humor, friendly, smart.
Great teacher overall. Very funny and her liveliness and accent keep the lectures interesting. There was a fair amount of reading but the texts were all good reads. I learned a lot and actually enjoyed going to class.
If you do the readings and are present, you will get a lot out of the class. You don't have to participate in discussion. I would highly suggest her Liberal Studies 123 class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GUR! if you are interested in learning the material great class with lots of great text. Overall I was taking for a GUR, she grades a lot harder then needed for a 100 level class
Class time is mostly spent in group discussion about the assigned readings, which was helpful for essays. She grades very hard, but gives good feedback and is willing to help you. She is very opinionated and sometimes it's hard to speak up with an opposing viewpoint, but the class was comfortable for the most part. She's very funny and outgoing.
Not an interesting class unless you are interested in the subject. However, if you show up to class and take notes and apply the notes to the essay, then you can get a B without reading. Overall too many readings but the professor is average.
She is an amazing professor. While her directions for assignments may not be the most clear she does it on purpose so you can turn the assignments into something meaningful to you. I learned more about myself in this class than any other I have taken in the last 4 years. I highly recommend this prof.
She's a really good teacher. The material she covered was pretty difficult to wrap your head around but she's always happy to talk you through it. Speak up during the class discussions if you want to get the most out of your money.
Andrea is Amazing! Born in germany raised in france, her accent is fantastic to listen to and it makes you pay attention. I just want to sit and talk with her all day. She is so passionate about life! Taking this class with her helped me learn more about myself than I ever have. She picks great texts and you get to watch a couple movies.
She is a great teacher with a passion for the subject. She requires quite a bit of reading and some is a bit dry, albeit worth the reads. The class is set up as 2 essays, and one group presentation/essay. She is a very fair grader.
Over all I hated the class. I was really pumped about the books we were reading but instead of enjoying the literature we were reading I learned to dislike it. Her lectured weren't clear and nor was her help if you went in for it. Over all I wish I wouldn't have taken the class but I can see why people MIGHT like her class.
I loved this class and the professor. I don't know why some people are complaining, she is brilliant, has wonderful things to say and it is not that hard to understand her. The books we read were all interesting and the discussions in class were very helpful and thought-provoking. If you don't like lectures or reading, don't take the class.
Her class turned out to be much more interesting than I had originally expected. Provides in-depth analyses of the texts in her lectures. Grades easily on the essays. Hardly any work required outside of class.
She is a very difficult grader, and her lectures are unclear. It is difficult to discern what she is looking for on papers. I was excited about this class but was very disappointed.
I really enjoyed Prof Gogrof; this was exactly the type of literature based class I've always wanted to take. She is passionate about her teaching. Besides reading, there are two take home essay exams and one final in class exam. She's a fair grader. Overall, if you don't mind a bit of reading, take this class!
Wonderful teacher with a kind heart and fashionable clothes. She knows her Marx and Freud!! Fascinating class. I was rapt.
I really liked Dr Gogrof! She has the most adorable German accent, she is very European in her attitude and views on the subject, I loved it. The class overall was a little philosophical for me, but I enjoyed it none-the-less. No formal textbook, just literature that you write about and get graded on. Loved all the art and history discussed.
I love her attitude and humor. She's very interesting to listen to and this is one of the very few classes I feel comfortable participating in discussion. Quite a bit of reading, two essays and a final, not a very hard class at all.
By far the best class I've ever taken. Gogröf controlled the class well while creating an atmosphere conducive to excellent class discussion. Her lectures were on point and VERY helpful. I loved the books we read and the class was innovative and engaging. She is my favorite professor at Western.
Very interesting person and only somewhat intimidating. Her grading on papers is pretty confusing but it's not hard to get a B on a paper for her.
Took this class thinking it was Currant events but it is actually a Philosophy Class, and the text was dry and not truly related to the topic of study, primarily theory over application of surveillance. She is also unclear as to what she want in the papers, and says she want simple but reality wants elaborate concepts.
Loved the topic of this class, but wasn't fond of Prof. Gogrof. She was funny and nice at times, but once in awhile she would come off as completely rude. I won't be taking a class with her again.
Won't give you great feedback. She's aggressive and you might think her comments can be easily rude.
I chose this class because I was particularly excited about the material, and it was awesome. I know that my peers did fairly well, but I got a C. Gogrof lacks clarity for the 3 assignments of the course. She gives you a prompt, you interpret it based on what you learned in class, if you interpret it in a way that is not Gogrof's, you're wrong
I really enjoyed Andrea as a professor and the material she chose for this class. There are only 3 assignments, and they are essays. They HAVE to be written the way she likes them (short, concise, backing up every single point) or you won't get a good grade. I am normally a really good writer and I got B's on all my essays. VERY interesting though.
Andrea is funny, genuinely interested in your thoughts and opinions, and ready to make class enjoyable and interesting every single day. Participation and attendance are worth 10%, two papers 30%, and then a short performance of your choice of poem, dance, skit, song, etc. 30%. This is only a tough class if you make it that way.
Assigned 7 different texts that we barely covered. Took attendance randomly, but didn't care if you left early. Entire grade based on three 3-8 page essays. You can basically read the material and not show up and still get an A if you are good at writing essays. COULD NOT use technology and basically just read her notes off the screen to us.
Andrea kind of expected us to have a back ground of psychology and philosophy so she would talk about things we didn't understand. She is a TOUGH grader, I usually get A's on essays but I got B's or below on all three. Her lecture style wasn't the best, she just read pages of block text that she wrote up on Word. I liked her, just not as a prof.
Gogrof is passionate and good at conversational lectures. She is harsh in grading and very unclear in what she wants - but if you don't give her just that don't hope for an A. She isn't mean, but aggressive and defensive of her fields. Also, she is tech incapable and her English isn't that good, so listen carefully and limit your creative writing..
Gogrof is extremely unclear in her lectures and feedback. There's a huge language barrier, but instead of trying to understand your perspective, she'll just tell you she's wrong. She's pretty aggressive in her passions and often comes across as mean. I'd stay away from any class of hers if you can.
The class itself was challenging for me. The readings are difficult and coming into class for discussion was intimidating. However, I really like Gogrof. She kind of grows on you. Her humor is odd and not always purposeful but she is so knowledgeable on the material. It may be rough at points but looking back I enjoyed the class.
She's very caring but her instructions were often unclear. Our grade was two papers (30% each) and one presentation/performance. That being said, she is a fair grader. The in class time could be better spent, the lectures are not very concrete (it often felt like a waste of time) and often just discussion. Also, TONS of reading.
She just kind of talks, there's no lecture just her talking. 5 weeks in and I'm still unsure of the purpose of this class. 3 papers, 4 pages, pretty much gives everyone a B. A good class if you need more credits, but need the time to work on other assignments in class. Lots of movies.
This course was intended as a prep course for upper division interdisciplinary research, as started in the course description. Unfortunately we never once discussed practical research tools as stated. This class was very much "sink or swim." If you knew how to research, about philosophy, or the course content previously, you were rewarded.
This Prof is smart, don't get me wrong, but her descriptions are so obtuse you never know what she's talking about. Interesting subject poorly taught.
Professor Gogrof is just rude. She uses the word "duh" a lot when I visit her during office hours, and makes me feel as if my opinions and ideas are garbage. I have never seen an instructor as unprofessional as this, and definitely will not take any future classes with her.
This professor does not teach, rather if you know the content previously, or if you are good at bsing, you will be fine. To all the others who want to learn and get good grades, no matter how much work you do or how many office visits, the best you can expect is a B and to feel very confused. This was my awful experience from a sincere student.
I think most of the negative ratings here are a result of people never having to work like they do for professor Gogröf. I had her for my very first college class ever, and still remember and cherish her rigor and ability years later. She's great if you want to challenge yourself and evolve, form new ideas, or want to think for yourself.
The complaints about courseload/readings-- thats college. Books she had were great, but on essays she marks you down if you make your own connections about the book instead of regurgetating back her own theories . Went to office to get essay back (missed class because of illness) as I went to reach for it, she snatched it back out of my hand...
Andrea is okay, but she is rude. She isnt interested in the opinions of others and only her own conclusions of the readings. The class revolves around her rather than the subject at hand. You have to adhere to what you think shed like in order to pass. She constantly argues with students in the zoom call and reveal private info publicly. ://
Ill start with that comment about anyone leaving negative feedback isnt used to real professors or whatever is stupid. Easy class. The professor is just annoying, rambles, anything you tell her in private/assignment you miss will be brought up in front of everyone. Easy work but she never gives full points even if you meet all criteria.
Extremely rude. The discussions are a joke. It's not about truly learning. She hated me and made it known. Tried to go to office hours to better understand her expectations and she asked my why I was even in college.
honestly the rudest teacher ive ever had. blatantly disrespects her students while maintaining a sky-high ego. doesn't know how to work canvas, and so no one knows grades or how we do. instead of fixing it she tells us we should've booked office hours to ask for grades. her teaching is monotone and bland. unbelievably bad teacher.
Tough grader who won't explain. She asked me to come to office hours after she failed my paper, then proceeded to ask why I was even there.
Andrea is a great professor and I learned so much. She gave a lot of feedback and asked really thought-provoking questions. That said, if you don't read the texts, you're not going to do well. Sparknotes will not cut it.
Professor Gogrof's lectures are engaging and thought provoking, and thrive in a small classroom setting with in class verbal participation. Not all assignments are concise, and the canvas page is hard to navigate. Grading and attitude is entirely based on whether you're in her good graces. Participate in class, do the reading- you should be good.
Dr. Gogrof was hands down the most engaging, and inspiring professor I've had at Western. Her lectures are captivating yet slightly tangential, but in the eloquent humanities professor way that keeps you engaged. if you're at all considering going into philosophy, English, or (art) history, do yourself a favor and take this class!
Her lectures were extremely unorganized. Be prepared for her to call on students at random and judge their opinions or thoughts. Overall, would not take again.
This professor is one of the most unprofessional professors I have ever had. Her book list is great, but the lectures are scattered. Expect a B on all essays, even if you meet the criteria. If your response doesn't fit her view, it will be degraded in front of the entire class. She is RUDE and is directly critical of students in front of the class.
Can be tangential and does assign a lot of course material, but her knowledge and critical thinking skills are worth it. Her canvas page is hard to figure out at first, but it's easy to learn how to navigate: come on, most people who are taking college courses know how to use canvas. Do your best to read what you can and you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Gogrof is an extremely knowledgeable professor. She definitely isn't for the faint of heart, if you are really interested in this subject matter, Dr. Gogrof is an awesome teacher. Everyone saying that she is harsh, etc, have never had a passionate professor who isn't from the US. She is a tough grader, but she made me think way more critically.
An A is 96%+ which is kinda tough but prof really cares! Especially if you engage with class material! Just focus and pay attention in readings and you'll be fine! She will definitely push you to think critically to think about material but its nice to have a prof who wants the best from their students
Doesn't know how to use canvas, so navigating the class and finding files was pretty difficult. I only read one of our many assigned readings and got a B, which is why I didn't mark her as a tough grader. Will publicly berate students and ask them why they're even in college if they say something wrong- very uncomfortable to witness as an outsider.
Her explanations are not helpful in the slightest, and even though accepted my Disability accommodations was not accommodating in the slightest and accused me of plagarism/ai multiple times. Her class is a poorly masked philosophy with the only opinions/explanations accepted are her own.
Unprofessional and not helpful In the slightest. Honestly felt like I was being targeted the whole quarter, do not reccomend if you dont like to talk in class/introverted/have anxiety. I'm so glad I'm done with this class even with a 63%
The Canvas page is incredibly confusing: the syllabus is one huge page with all the assignments at the very bottom, and all of the assignments are kept in the files section with confusing naming. Her feedback consists of question marks with no elaboration or just borderline insults. I've never been scared to talk in class until this professor.
Gogrof can be intimidating but also nice/funny. Overall enjoyed learning about the (very broad) content but the lectures were heavy and could be boring. She really valued participation but also sometimes disagreed with people's observations. Canvas was a bit confusing but wasn't many assignments to deal with. Papers, pop quizzes, creative project.
Least favorite professor I have had at western, airs out students personal business in front of entire class and will purposely embarrass students for getting an answer wrong. Class material is interesting but not worth the hassle this class has, just read freud and the communist manifesto and you have basically taken the class.
The class materials are good, but the professor's critiques are unhelpful and lack guidance, making essay improvement difficult. She often rants, and I didn't feel comfortable sharing ideas due to bi@$ incidents she did. To succeed, align with her Eurocentric perspective and avoid innovation. Wouldn't recommend her class if you have a choice.
Gogrof is intense. However, it's not personal. She just holds you accountable. Every time I've seen her chastise someone it's because instructions were ignored. Also, when you have an opposing stance, she expects at least some evidence to support it. These are fair expectations for college classes. I found her to be a nice and reasonable professor.
Show up to class to get credit and you'll be fine.
A lot of these reviews neglect to acknowledge that Andrea is German and English is not her first language. Her syllabus is laid out in a very confusing way, but you can do well in this class without having to reference it too often. I barely read any of our readings and still got an A. If you know how to interpret literature you will do fine.
Professor Gogrof was one of the worst professors I've had at Western. On more than one occasion she switched a due date of an assignment last minute, or disregarded her syllabus' deadlines, and made the due dates earlier so some could not submit assignments when they thought they were supposed to. She also personally attacks students in several way
