this was my favorite class
Really nice and very easy going. Laid back class. Would recommend!
Andrea is an amazing teacher- plays the devils advocate and really pushes the envelope to get her students to understand what sociology is all about. She is also a great sociology club leader, friend and woman
very easy teacher, and has her ways to make you understand. I loved her games and challenges. Participation is required if you want good grades, but you don't have to be correct as long as you try to understand the topic. Highly recommended. easy "A"
Andrea is a awesome teacher, helps out a lot on tests, makes sure you LEARN and UNDERSTAND the information. her tests are short answer and there was a final in-class essay after watching a movie. She's not an easy "A", but if you want to learn about sociology you'll usually end up getting an "A" She gets A+ for being an amazing teacher.
Awsome teacher. I would recomend her for this subject. I have taken her for two different classes. Everyone that shows up and does there homework gets an A. For V04 there are no test for exams all there are is reading assignments and take like 5 mins each very easy
I enjoyed the class. It's not hard or anything. One or two questions for each reading, 2 projects, final paper, & attendance/participation. Overall, it gave me a good insight to gender.
the best teach i have ever had she is supper nise and just a great teacher!
Awesome teacher. Took her summer class. Best class ive ever taken at VC. Tests are easy if you study your notes/pay attention. Very helpful, very funny, class is enjoyable to come to. Would def reccomend!
She's very down to earth and doesn't sugar coat things. Her tests are very challenging if you don't study the right material. She gives plenty of extra credit which will boost your (letter) test grade by 1/2 if you complete all of it.
She takes things I say to her personally. She likes to fool her studenst by telling them wrong answers for extra credit.
Shes an awesome teacher. Made me want to major in sociolgy. Shes really funny and open minded. You'll never get bored in class and everything you learn is interesting. Highly recommend taking her!!
Awesome teacher. Taught things that have gone beyond the classroom. Very open-minded and honest approach the teaching. IMO one of the best teacher's I've taken at VC and I've had many teachers there. She challenge's you to think. Something a lot of teachers don't do.
Professor Horigan is among the best & brightest at Ventura College, I wish all the teaching staff could be this good. Well acquainted with the subject; she encourages & moderates classroom discussions with a gentle expertise that promotes constructive & civil dialogue?even when discussing controversial & emotional topics. Take all of her classes.
Professor Horigan shes one of best at VC. If you want to learn about Sociology take her classes. She encourages and moderates sometimes controversial and emotional topics. Her test can be challenging so read your book, study your notes and you do well.
Honestly the best professor I have ever had at vc. She is very passionate about the subject, and I have never found a class of hers boring! She truly loves to teach and always has discussion based classes not just boring lectures from a powerpoint! DEFINATLEY take a class from her!
Great teacher. A lot is said when people say she is challenging, however still love her. Great job Andrea!
Great teacher. was scared of class at first but she made the subj clear. favorite teacher so far at VC
Super fun class, always fun and interesting topics. The teacher has a great sense of humor and knows what she's teaching. The mid-term and final were a piece of cake. Easy B.
Best Instructor Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible teacher. Tests were way too hard and the presentation project is a joke.
know what she is talking about very good teacher. lets you have your own opinion, free to speak. I would definitely recommend her! :) test are long but if you pay attention you will do good.
This teacher is funny and she knows what she is talking about. Pay attention in class and study for the tests and you will do fine. She will hear out peoples opinions and I really recommend you take her. Very interesting class and favorite teacher so far.
Super Awsome! She will even help you with your problems outside of the class. Highly recommend her.
The best! She is helpful and explains everything very well. She is understanding and her class is not hard if you pay attention and just study for the tests. She makes her classes fun. Take her!!
Great teacher. Hip. Funny but she will make you learn. difficult tests with essay questions. Caring, honest and truthful.
I liked this class very much. she is "hip" but cool and sweet. Her assignments were easy because all you had to do was 1 project..super easy! then quizzes were okay easy. REALLPAY ATTENTION TO WHAT SHE SAYS AND POWERPOINTS DIAGRAMS! I looked forward to coming to this class.
One of the best Sociology professors I have ever had. She is very understanding, clear in her lectures, and very much willing to help you. Her tests are fair and on the material she says. I have taken 3 classes with here now, and she has been an excellent instructor every time.
She was tough, but I LEARNED!
she is wonderful!!!
great teacher i have taken 3 classes from her
I took her class a few years ago and I loved it. She has teaches you in different ways not just read this and take a test on it. You do group discussions and projects. She is very interactive. Great teacher!!!
Great teacher i have taken three classes and plan to take more.
She is by far the BEST teacher at Ventura College!!
Loved this class. I took her Social Problems class during the summer semester, and it was a lot of work crammed into 7 weeks, but she made it so much fun! The class involved a lot of reading. Weekly discussions, 4 written assignments and an exam every other week plus a final paper. A lot of work but it is an easy A if you put in the effort.
She made me feel safe and valued, which is unusual, considering I'm bisexual and mentally ill. She's there for you and will respond to emails. Don't worry about missing more than 4 of the classes like it says on her syllabus-- she'll help you pass no matter what as long as you want to learn and stay in communication with her.
Super Awesome teacher. Already enrolled in another class with her.
She's by far the best professor I have ever had. She gives great feed back and helps you out when you need help. She likes when you participate & go to office hours. Be honest with her & she will help you out more. It is important to read the book so you can comprehend her lectures. I have taken almost all her courses & wish I could take more.
Andrea Horigan is an amazing person and professor. I just graduated VC with an AA in Human Services and Andrea was my main professor during my time there. She has a passion and outlook for life that I admire and respect deeply. If you are interested in sociology or human services take her classes.
Professor Horigan is a great teacher. The only problem I had is the many exams we had in the summer. So get ready to read because pretty much all of the answers are found there instead of the lectures. Hard A, easy B.
Professor Horigan is hilarious and truly interested in her field. She will make you think about things you wouldn't normally have taken into account. Fantastic teacher!
Andrea is an amazing and inspiring teacher. She makes this "soft science" into a subject that demands attention and seriousness. Read, study, and you'll pass. She grades based on EFFORT. I love her and I would take many classes more if she taught them. Take advantage of her classes, your perspectives on the world will grow.
Andrea is an amazing professor. It's rare to find someone who inspires you so much that you change majors. She is funny, kind, and loves to make her classes think about the world. I learned a lot. Clear on what is due, and gives very quick feedback. Sought me out when I forgot to turn in final paper. Saved my grade from dropping to a B. TAKE HER!!
Love her! She cares about all people and equality and fairness is very important to her as it should be everywhere. She offers extra credit which is helpful for most and just overall great professor/ person
Really great with feedback, answers all questions. I took the online version of this class and the only thing you need to be sure of is to keep up with the work. There are multiple things due weekly so if you can manage time we'l with online classes you should be good. Maybe 5 assignments that were very easy, discussions weekly, and 5 exams.
She was the most inspirational professor I had while attending Ventura College. I got into sociology as a major because of how interesting she made this class which is the intro course. She offers different classes as well and the other ones were even better because they went into more detail. I highly recommend taking her courses.
Love her! Have taken four classes with Andrea. She knows her stuff and cares about her students. Do your reading as she has surprise quizzes sometimes.
Andrea is simply the best. She truly cares about her students and is always willing to help you. Her lectures are really interesting, and she often leads the class in sociological discussions that sometimes can take up the whole class. Not a lot of homework at all, just study for the tests and show up.
She is by far the most amazing Sociology instructor I've ever taken! She manages to get everyone involved & makes it fun to learn. She does a lot of power points & about 4 exams. She gives you the option to come up with the test questions (trust me, make as many as you can). She's overall amazing & if you do the work, you'll get an A.
Took online class. Found it fairly easy. Discussions are very important also yet very easy. She takes time to reply to your posts. Did not have a midterm. I scored full grade on all assignments. Exceeded 100% in class and did all extra credit possible. Found it easy as long as you do your discussions and assignments. Textbook was a PDF. Easy A
Professor Horigan is a professor that you can just tell is passionate about her craft and it transpires through every lecture. If you read the required reading and pay attention you will pass. Her lectures are inspirational and relatable. I looked forward to attending her class. READ, WRITE GOOD NOTES AND YOU WILL PASS. An easy A if youre not lazy.
I am in the spring semester taking Professor Horigan, she's amazing I love every module she puts out for us. There is a bit reading but that's how its suppose to be. She's super nice and understanding. Every chapter there is a module that she puts out you read each chapter, quiz, discussion and sometimes she'll throw in an activity which is fun.
I took professor Horigans Social Problems class online and she was so helpful and very engaging. The class consisted of 15 or fewer chapters, discussions, quiz and final. The quizzes were from the book so definitely get the book. Just get everything she askes done right, she provides EC, Super nice and funny! I love her! I RECOMMEND HER!!!!!!
I took her for online Sociology, she was very specific in what she wanted. She gives you a week to do assignments. Read and talk about what you read and how you feel with the group. Easy A, and tests were easy.
Only complaint is that she doesn't have a very loud voice so tough luck if you sit in the back, learned that the hard way.
This professor gives really interesting assignments that dont make it hard but fun to be in this class. You do have to do the reading if you want to pass, she doesnt accept late work but offers extra credit highly recommend
She is always willing to help. She gives study guides for tests that make it easy to pass. She does make sure that everyone participates in class. Is always willing to answer any question. Great professor for sociology. Definitely recommend her.
Easy A if you do the work. Read the text book, take the quizzes (10-15 questions). Get ready to WRITE a lot though: There's lots of weekly discussions (250 words + respond to 2 classmates) and few writing assignments (1-2 pgs). However, NO exams, NO final! Hands down, the easiest prof I have ever taken!
was pretty chill. doesnt give that much work and if so its really easy
Andrea is a real awesome teacher. Would love to stay in her class my entire college career. Not too much homework and realistic test and exams. Lecture is ironically the best part of the class. Very sweet and funny teacher with un biased points of view. Teaches the subject with high level of knowledge. Truly an intelligent and amazing professor.
Free online text books. Each week you read a chapter, do a discussion and take a quiz. You have two chances for each quiz so it is easy to get 100% on them. For the discussion as long as you write 250 words and respond to 2 peers you get full credit. There are also a few small projects she has you do that are not difficult.
Attendance is important there is no reason you would want to skip this class. The teacher cares about your learning, your opinion, respects backgrounds. She is one of those good professors out here. The book is on a free app. Keep up with your work and you will receive the grade you deserve. Tests need studying but not difficult.
This was the easiest class! One discussion a week, and a short easy quiz weekly instead of large exams. And she designed the discussions to be mainly off of our opinions rather than from the book. She was super easy and positive.
Andrea is a great professor. I took 2 of her classes, one in person and one online. For her intro to Soc class, the online textbook is free to use! Get ready to talk in groups, as she loves participation. For online, she wants discussion attendance and your feedback relating to the topics in the textbook. She genuinely wants you to succeed!
I took her class as a summer course, but she was very generous. The only thing though is that she does NOT accept any late work, so dont procrastinate. Each module corresponds to a chapter in the FREE online textbook and she gives you two attempts per quiz. You have some assignments sprinkled in and a term paper due at the end of the semester.
She does give good responses to different assignments. But lately I feel like she is slacking off in terms of responding and explaining why we get the score that we do (even if it is a discussion-type post). I did ask her questions from times to time but I never gotten reply.
I took SOC V01, V02, V05, and V13. Only V01 was in person. I like how the classes were structured. One chapter quiz and one discussion post each week. Uses free online textbooks. Some extra assignments every so often but nothing too difficult. SOC V02 and V05 had some kind of final paper at the end.
Professor Horigan is such an awesome professor! She gives feedback on most assignments, there is a weekly discussion and a weekly quiz. The textbook is a free and online one which is always great. A final project paper and if you got an A in her class you were excused from the final.
I took this course last summer 2020, so I don't remember a ton about the class, but I really like Andrea and her teaching style. For an online course it was organized well and expectations clear.
Professor Andrea gives effective feedback on all assignments, however, pay attention to her rubric as she is picky when grading for the most part. I took the 4-week summer online course and I felt that I learned a lot in this time. This class does demand quite some time but prioritizing your assignments would help you succeed as it would elsewhere.
Andrea is an excellent professor. I had an online class that required a weekly discussion and quiz. I really enjoyed the discussions as some students (myself included) shared personal experiences pertaining to the discussion topic. Her teaching makes it a lot easy for student to understand different topics related to society. An amazing professor.
I absolutely loved taking Professor Horigan's class! If you want a professor who is rooting for your success & will help you reach that success in class, then Professor Horigan is that person! She is extremely knowledgeable in the field of sociology, encourages hard work, provides helpful course content, & is available outside of class- she rocks!
Professor Horigan is such and amazing professor. She really makes you feel welcomed and encourages you to work hard. She is a pretty easy grader and if you didn't get full credit she has no issue to explain if she hasn't already. I recommend this professor to everyone she is amazing! You an tell she really cares and is rooting for you always!
Loved this class! All it was was reading which mostly focused on vocab for quizzes. Discussions were easy ( 250 words +) and respond to 2 classmates. There were papers here and there only like 5 and every paper would slowly requiere another page. I recommend this class if you have a thing for easy work but also if you are good with a bit of work.
Prof. Horigan has a clear setup (I took online). Free online textbook. Weekly Quiz (2 attempts) and discussion posts. Read and watch module slides and quizzes very do-able. Fair grader. 2 extra credit opportunities. Final was a page and a half paper that applies what was learned in semester. No hard test. No tricky questions.
I was excited for every class, and her class made me love Sociology! I took her in-person class. I had fun with my peer and we discussed sociological problems in class. She provides an online textbook, and the quiz questions are something you will find in the textbook. You can tell she is passionate about Sociology.
Truly a wonderful professor! Horigan is very understanding & passionate. Easy class overall. Plenty of reading & quizzes but not difficult content. I had some odd circumstances regarding my final paper & she was understanding of my circumstances which I appreciate greatly. Plenty of fun class discussion! overall great professor!!!
Prof Horigan is great. I took her SOCV01 class and loved it, she and her lectures are hilarious. Would absolutely take her again.
She's so passionate about sociology. Very funny and entertaining. There are few assignments and quizzes. I never opened my textbook because she covers everything in class. Just show up to class and you'll pass.
I really enjoyed this class! Andrea does an amazing job making it interesting and engaging. You can tell how much she cares and enjoys Sociology. The work is moderately light, and attendance is key. I loved her class so much, and I totally recommend it!
Great teacher. I attended an in-person class. Considering the amount of students, there was an impressively good classroom atmosphere. She had us discuss together and occasionally do in-class activities (not graded). The textbook is online and free.
Professor Horigan is such a good instructor! She is kind and funny! The assignment are directly related to the material. Just a warning that two assignments require to interview and embarrass yourself lol. The reading was crucial and we had small quizzes weekly on canvas. The final was pretty easy.
She's awesome! It's a great class for major credit. I highly recommend her. If you have harder classes and don't want to worry so much about another class take this one! Sure, there's some reading but that comes with any course, lectures are great, participate (she'll make you) but in a good way. Replies to emails, easy exams, just do the work!
I am sure she is a great in-person professor, but online was not the best. The assignments are easy, but she takes points off without fully explaining why and does not respond to messages quickly. Quizzes are easy, but worded confusingly and have a lot of spelling errors.
Casual professor, very knowledgeable. The textbook was engaging but had some biased/gendered language; it might be outdated. Andrea is a generous grader, and most assignments are personal insights relating to the outlined concepts. If you try, you'll pass.
