She is the best! She makes the class so much more interesting at 9am in the morning, and she does a great job explaining concepts and giving real life examples that we can relate to, like for instance, beer. lol She is a funny social psychologist.
Shes awesome. Finds a way to make a very dull subject interesting. Very good at explaining concepts. Very nice and approachable!
One of the best professors I've ever had, which is esp. impressive considering how young she is. All the readings were posted online, so no books to buy, and a lot more variety. Clear, balanced presentation of materials, and really engaging as a prof. Assignments were manageable. I'd recommend taking a class with her to anyone.
Bottomline: if you are a psychology major and have to take an experimental course, take exp social with her! She is very friendly, helpful, and clear on the material. Grading is fair and she walks you through using SPSS and any other technical steps in formatting the paper. She kind of looks like Tina Fey, take class with her!

The material is good and her stories are always funny. Not to bad looking either!
By far one of the best professors I have had at BU. As a CJ major, I was hesitant to take this class as an elective but I'm so glad I did. I ended up looking forward to it each week. Just contribute to discussions and do your work and you'll love this class too. Prof. provides reading materials so no book to buy, which is great too!
By far one of the best professors I've had at BU. She cares about her students, and she genuinely wants you to succeed both in this class and in others. You need to take her class!!
GREAT PROFESSOR! Take her class. She is intelligent, clear, funny, and energetic. The tests are straight forward, so if you pay attention you'll do well. She has good examples and encourages students to participate.
She is a really enthusiastic teacher which I love, but her TA is ridiculous. Can barely speak English and is incredibly hard to understand, so if you want to ask a question ask the professor herself.
Great professor. Very lively and clear lecturer. Tests are fair. Just don't read too much into the questions, or you will tend to overthink and get something wrong. Discussion is 10% of the grade, and the rest is 3 out of 4 exams (3 non cumulative, and 1 cumulative final). Lowest one is dropped (which can be the final if you so desire).
I have had her for a few classes now and love her. She really does want her students to do well so if you put in the effort you should do well. Also go to office hours, get to know her. She really is wicked awesome. P.S. that class code could be wrong. I don't remember what the code was.
She is a great lecturer, very funny. I had problems with some of her exam questions, not all of them are straight forward and it is easy to interpret a question the wrong way. If you take her class, GO TO LECTURE.
She's a great lecturer! Her lectures are not boring. She's also very fair; will omit questions on exams if they seem too picky. 4 exams, she takes your 3 best. But be very specific about EVERYTHING when you study because tests can be nitpicky at times. Just know lots of details!
I'm taking this class in the summer, but she is a great professor who knows her stuff. Go to lecture because she tells stories to relate the material to you. You can use the book as a reference, but she pretty much tells you what you need to know. Overall, I'm glad I took her class!
Prof. Mercurio is very passionate & knowledgeable in the area of Women & Health regarding Psychology. She delivers the material smoothly, but has no problem repeating as long as you speak up. The quiz were great, and no final, yet a paper & presentation. I recommend this course.
You have to love this one. She is great. Low self-esteem but absolutely hilarious and so sweet / understanding. She was the best Prof to go into college with. Love you Andrea!
The material was pretty dry, and she wasn't clear in the material for the exams. The questions were tricky, and there were some random questions. She's always in office hours and responds to emails. 3 exams and optional final. No study guide, so buy the book and attend lectures. Curves at the end. Discusion really isn't helpful.
Was really excited to take this class but material was not all that interesting. Professor is great and always available to answer questions. Tests can be difficult but overall easy to get a B+ on. What really helps get the A is reading the book. Questions can be very specific and nitpicky so write down EVERYTHING she says in lecture. Not an easy A
she's funny, very clear, but her tests caught the whole class off guard--you'd think you had all the material down, then you got a C on the test. but I think it was her first time teaching the class so maybe she'll make tests more fair in the future.
great professor and advisor!!!!
She is the nicest lady. You can tell that she genuinely wants her to students to like her and to pass her class. She drops the lowest test grade and gives extra credit from time to time. The only downside is that some of her lectures are quite boring.
Dr. Mercurio is a super laid-back, empathetic teacher who wants her students to learn and do well. This course was very straightforward and the subject matter was mostly review (for those who have taken stats/other psych classes). She has a bit of a sarcastic air to her, but she makes some great jokes.
She's the best teacher and person ever!!! She is genuinely caring and will do more than she needs to and more than most people do to make sure her students are learning not only in her class but others too. She is clear and fair and one of the hardest working individuals who puts her students above herself. She helped me believe in myself.
She's wonderful, endearing, funny and super awesome. You can talk to her about anything. You will learn the material b/c she actually teaches and explains, and makes the extra effort to make sure you get it/are cared for. I love her dearly!!! There will always be a special place for her in my heart. Seeing her do what she does everyday inspires me.
Take any of her classes (she has a new Psych of Eating class!!) and you will love it because you will love her! I always hear so many students raving about not only her class but her ability to care and be relatable and tell absolutely hilarious stories (when she gets excited telling it, it's wicked adorable).
PS 261 She is really personable and is a super nice lady. She's a wonderful teacher with an enchanting personality to match. I wish her nothing but the absolute best, she deserves that and the world. I hope she knows how much so many people love her and think so highly of her. I'll always think you're truly the best, A!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so happy that my prof got switched to her. Anyone who doesn't see how amazing she is/how much of an asset she is to the department needs to seriously take a step back and check themselves. If you're not a bonehead and write down what she says, you'll find her tests often match word for word & you really have nothing to complain about :)
I'm not a psych major, but I took this class because it seemed interesting and I LOVED IT! I actually was excited to go to her class. She has a self deprecating sense of humor which is hilarious and she's very relatable. Sometimes test questions can be hard to interpret, but she is very fair; overall not a hard class. TAKE!!! The TA is also great!
She is awesome! She made the dry content of the experimental Psych class so much more enjoyable. Very helpful and profound. If you work hard, you are guaranteed to get a good grade! Take this class with her!
She made personality psych really interesting and always told lots of anecdotes in class. I love her sense of humor and you can tell that she really cares about her students and wants them to do well. Tests are fair and based on the lecture. This class is an easy A if you actually go to class. There are 3 tests and a final and you get to drop one.
Very enjoyable class. Subject material was always relatively interesting, would strongly recommend taking this class. Class members worked in groups of two to three to lead the discussion based on chapters in the textbook and were asked to write a short essay afterwards. Only other grades were a final paper and participation. Grading was fair.
Probably the easiest but also the best psychology class at BU! She's very clear in lecture, and her lecture was actually pretty interesting. 4 exams, but they are fair and just go to class and you will be alright. You don't have to buy the textbook, but since the book is relatively pretty cheap and well written, it's up to you to buy the book.
Her first exam, the average was a low 70. She said that she'd curve it, but didn't. I did around average on her first exam, got a 90 on her second, and a strong A on the paper that counted towards most of our grade. I still ended up getting a B. It was really discouraging since I worked so hard. She's a hard grader. I wouldnt take Exp with her.
She didn't curve her first test which she said she would so not a lot of people got an A in this class even though their final paper (50%) earned a high grade. She also brought in her dog for the first exam which was extremely distracting. She's a tough grader and takes off points for things she never mentioned and tells you to suck it up.
Prof. Mercurio gave only two tests. Everything on the tests was covered in class. Expectations were clear for the paper. Lectures are short and to the point. She is absolutely hilarious.
Taken during Summer 2 Awesome professor who I wish I met years ago. She would have been the sole reason I pursed a minor in psych (I have a BS in health science) Very straightforward about academic expectations, and lectures are always interesting & engaging because of her personality. GENUINELY wants her students to do well!
Professor Mercurio is one of the best professors I've had at BU. She is extremely helpful and always open to suggestions about how to make her class better. She really listens to her students and wants them to do well. Experimental psych is not an easy course, but Mercurio makes it bearable (and actually enjoyable).
Mercurio is an awesome teacher. She is so understanding and she really cares about her students. She expects a lot from her students but as long as you put in effort you will do well. There's papers and a take home final but no written exams. I highly recommend this class with her, she is the best!
She is a great professor who listens to what you say. Her grading is very straight forward and if you pay attention in lecture, you will do great. There is nothing negative I can think of, only positive things about her :)
Extremely easy class. IF you know what you're doing and IF you're not intellectually challenged, you will do well in the class. Not only that, you'll learn much in this class. You will have to attend all the lectures though. RECOMMENDED.
Attend all the lectures and I guarantee you'll pass the class. A great professor to have in the morning and one of my favorite professors in my academic career for sure. Cannot say any negative words about her.
I absolutely loved this class. Dr. Mercurio made me want to wake up in the morning and go to her class. She is engaging, funny, and truly cares about her students. She occasionally brings her dog to class, which is wonderful. Meetings with her outside of class are helpful, and she will answer any questions you have.
Great professor, great human being. She's down to earth, entertaining, and most importantly insightful. Probably my favorite undergrad class thus far.
She does not seem like she enjoys teaching the class . She likes her dog more than teaching
Probably the best teacher in the department. Really cares about students. Always working to improve as an instructor. Very knowledgable and intelligent. Sardonic and blunt sense of humor. Often brings her cute dog to class. Start data collection for your group project ASAP. You'll do well so long as you follow instructions and don't cut corners.
I took PS251 (personality psych) with Prof Mercurio, and I loved her (and her dog). The class was pretty easy, multiple choice tests, attendance activities where you get credit just for showing up, minimal book use. I'd definitely recommend her, but don't take personality with her, b/c she said she prefers teaching other classes.
Amazing Professor!! She is very engaging and the material is amazing. Beware that the exams contain material that is not covered in lecture and is ONLY in the textbook. Very helpful! Exams are clear and fair and the final is not cumulative.
If you want to get easy A, you could take her class. However, if you love psychology and want to learn something interesting and useful, I recommend you to take Shim's personality class. She told us to tell people do not take her personality class, because she hates the material and does not enjoy teaching it!
Amazing Professor! The course itself is very difficult, but she really wants you to do well. The research paper takes up a majority of your time and her exams are all application based so they are more difficult than you think. As long as you pay attention in class and get started on the paper early you can get an A.
The class was definitely interesting and Mercurio is very knowledgeable on the subject. Just be prepared to spend 10-15 min a class with her telling her dog to behave. It was kind of annoying after a while. Put in the some work and you can get an A. I did the very bare min and got a good grade. She put 2-3 questions from the textbook on each exam
First thing she said at the start of the semester was that she wanted to redeem herself after reading some of the off-putting comments on here, and she absolutely delivered. Super patient and willing to go over every minute detail of a subject that can get drier than the Sahara. The paper is more than manageable with her guidance, TAKE HER CLASS!
Great class, Professor Mercurio has a real talent for making the subject matter seem both accessible and interesting. Bonus points: cute dog!
Mercurio was super kind and always helpful to the students. Always a plus to see her dog Lily around.
Nice woman and smart. However her tests are vague which makes them difficult.
She brings her dog Lilly to every lecture! She makes the material easy to understand and has a way of bringing fun into the classroom. Her class wakes me up in the morning after an extremely boring lecture, and I find myself so enthralled in the subject that the class goes by so quickly! Would HIGHLY recommend.
I have taken three classes with Dr. Mercurio, and she is my favorite professor in all of BU. She is funny, caring and attentive, and she helped me SO MUCH outside of the classroom. I enjoyed every one of her classes (I took PS 251, 261 and 325 with her, worked hard and got an A in all of them). Also, her dog Lily was always the highlight of my day!
I really loved social psychology with Dr. Mercurio and her dog, Lily! You have to read the textbook as there are questions on the test that she didn't talk about in class. Grade based on 3 non-cumulative tests, discussion, and attendance activities (short responses to a question). She focuses on psych studies, so make sure you know them for tests!
Dr. Mercurio is an amazing professor! She is so funny and always brings in her dog Lily to class, who is so cute and makes lectures so fun. She makes the content very easy to understand and makes it so fascinating! She does a really good job engaging her students and wanting her students to get a good grade. 10/10 recommend :)
Dr. Mercurio made experimental psych such a painless experience. She is so funny, very engaging, and she also brings her dog to class :)
From day 1, Professor Mercurio's lectures were engaging. She has a great sense of humor and you can see that she really knows what she's talking about. The material is already interesting by itself but she would connect it to real life examples and I always left lectures feeling like I had learned something I could apply to my own life. Amazing!
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Mercurio. BU is lucky to have her as a professor & if you have the chance to take any of her classes... DO IT! Hilarious, kind, & always willing to answer questions & offer help outside of class. Probably the most caring prof at BU. Wants you to succeed and a huge animal lover. What more could you ask for?!
Mercurio is just a freaking gem. She is hilarious, a great professor who really wants you to learn and wants you to get a good grade, and she brings her dog into class every day. Literally what more do you want in a professor? If you care, and you show her you care about your grade, she will try to help you in any way she can possible. 15/10 prof.
This is not an easy class, but Mercurio is a great Professor. She teaches the relatively tough criteria very well. There are two exams, which are both pretty challenging, especially the first. The final paper is a lot of work, but the guidelines are very helpful. She is tough grader, and makes you work. But helps you all the way! Brings dog!
I like her, she seems nice and is very straight forward. The class is not easy but do your best on the project and you should be fine. Plus I love her dog. Definitely not my favorite class to take but I am glad I took it with her.
Dr. Mercurio is great. She is so funny and explains topics really well. She also gives good advice and I wish I had taken her for social psych as well.
In theory there is nothing wrong with the way Mercurio lectures, that part is fine and the content of the class is good. Shes a fine professor as long as you dont mind dealing with her absolutely horrible attitude. Extremely condescending and seems like its a chore for her to grade papers and answer questions. Take someone else if you can.
Professor Mercurio is a nice lecturer, but it felt like she hated teaching this class. She was always in a rush to finish, and rarely gave feedback on assignments. She encouraged class participation, and the topics were interesting, but it seemed as if everyone was interested in the class, but her.
I have taken several classes with Dr. Mercurio, and I highly recommend her because she is amazing and caring. Discussion based course so you are required to be engaged and participate-- she takes close note of this! One absence permitted. Weekly 1-page single-spaced analysis for 2-3 lengthy articles, group presentation, and 2 research papers.
Professor Mercurio is funny, insightful, and all around a joy to have as a professor. If you care about grades, work for it, and you will do well. I have taken Social Psych, Experimental, and Family Violence with her, and would take another class with her for sure!
Great
I love this professor so much. She made an effort to not only make the content relatable but she also went above and beyond at getting to know me and my peers. She often kept up with many students individual lives and always made an effort to make everybody feel welcome. I wish i could clone her and make her my professor for my other classes. ICON.
Mercurio is very chill and nice. Cracks jokes often and even shows her dog to the class. She created a Facebook group for the class, where she posts pictures of pets and announcements. Teaches the material well, but tests may contain questions about content that's covered in the textbook but not in lectures. Tests were fair and all multiple choice.
I would not recommend Dr. Mercurio for online courses, her blackboard was extremely confusing and there were constant misunderstandings between her and the class that would be blamed on the students resulting in bad grades. Her grading was harsh and very subjective based on the mood she was in.
To succeed in Social Psych, use the given slides and write down the examples that she talks about in class. Participate in discussion and you'll be fine. I showed up to her office hours and you can tell that she just cares. She's relatable and sweet, very lowkey and makes you feel like a friend. Put in effort for an A. Not overwhelming at all.
Please for the sake of God DO NOT take her PS472. Not sure about her other classes but this class is hard. She is really confusing in what she looks for in the weekly reflections, and the final requires you to write 4 essays each 500-800 words within 48 hours. Idk how she expects her students to do that during finals week when ppl are most stressed
Please don't take experimental psych with this professor. Assignments were often unclear and deadlines were moved around extremely often. Grading is based on her mood and she refused to take questions concerning the grades she gave on the final paper which was worth 30% of the grade.
This class has incredible content that I would highly recommend. Mercurio is a caring professor who allows for time to destress and talk about other issues. Be ready to work HARD for this class because As do not come easily. Mercurio is quite available though for questions about coursework and I think that participation does help.
A lot of work, but she paced it out so that it was doable. She gave detailed feedback on assignments and was accommodating to everyone with the new hybrid learning model. Deadlines were often changed if she felt people were struggling with an assignment. A paper and one exam make up most of the grade, but she gives feedback throughout the semester.
Professor Mercurio is a wonderful professor, she explains topics so clearly and in a memorable way, plus she is hilarious. The class was fun and enjoyable.
Professor Mercurio is one of my favourite teachers. Her lectures are really clear and she is really funny. Tests are not too hard. Highly recommend her for ps261
I dreaded taking experimental psych but Dr. M is literally a godsend, I cannot emphasize how much I love her and her approach to this course. She makes everything clear, provides a tone of resources and help, structures the course in a way that is not overwhelming. She is also hilarious! If spss scares you - take her & never look back. 11/10
The grading criteria of the paper assignments makes no sense. The median and mean score of the final grade is less than 80. Don't take this class in summer session if you want to keep your GPA. She makes people feel like that their efforts are nothing.
Professor Mercurio is a very friendly and fun person. I understand that during summer term she wanted to make students' life easier but sometimes I wish we could jump straight into the materials since social psychology is very interesting, instead of always talking about random topics.
Professor Mercurio is amazing. Her lectures are interesting and funny. She sometimes brings up random stories but I dont really mind because she finds a way to relate it back to class material. She explains social psych concepts with real-life examples and I find this really helpful. For a class size that large, she is very caring.
Professor can be nice sometimes but very condescending other times. I study a LOT and go to every class, but the test questions are often confusingly-worded and ambiguous so it definitely hurts my grade
Mercurio is great. Her lectures are always entertaining and she encourages participation. I always retain information every time. She goes off on tangents, but they are related to course material. Real-life examples are very useful. Exams are difficult but fair - questions can be misleading at times. Highly recommended!
She is awesome and extremely knowledgeable! She's very funny and it is clear that she cares about her students a lot. Her exams are challenging but fair, reading the textbook is extremely helpful in understanding content fully. She does offer an opportunity for extra credit and bonus questions on exams. She also brings her dog Lilly to every class!
LOVE her! Slides are super useful and easy to take notes from. Very understanding, its clear she wants us to succeed. Always asking questions to see where we're at and get feedback. She gave us extra credit opportunities and small curves throughout the semester. Told us sections of the textbook we're responsible for and gave us practice questions:)
dr mercurio is my FAVORITE! so kind, funny, and down to earth, and her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. she gives study guides and is very clear about what we should expect on exams. she also repeatedly invites feedback as she really wants students to do well. also she has the cutest furry friend :)
I was so nervous to take this class because I did not want anything to do with research but Dr. Mercurio walks you through everyhting so well and makes everything so understandable that it was not too bad. I had a bad base for this class and was still able to make it work because of how good she is, she's so sweet. Take your experimental with her!
The only thing that made me nervous was the 10 page paper because I had never written a research paper, but the class overall was great. Lots of talking about articles, a group project, presentations and use of videos/movies. Very engaging all semester long and she is very respectful talking about difficult topics. Really happy I took this class!
Harsh grader, but gave great feedback. Genuinely feel as if my writing improved in this class. Expectations for assignments were realistic and appropriately-challenging. Gave a clear structure to the writing of the research as well as easy-to-understand resources.
Great professor; she doesn't belittle anyone and treats you like an equal. It was a little annoying how class time would be significantly wasted on talking to her dog. Pretty test heavy (only two exams, 60% of grade), and tests felt messy and harder than she said. Given her circumstances this semester, the class was fine. Just a bit messy.
Created a really great classroom environment that allowed for great discussion on sensitive topics. Essay based final (based on class readings & discussions), one group presentation, weekly discussion posts, and a research paper. Pretty fair grader, though no easy 100s
She is the absolute worst. She does not teach well. I have learnt nothing from this class. Absolute waste of time and money. She does not scale the class even when the average is a C- DO NOT TAKE HER.
A good professor, a harsh grader, has high expectations for students but doesn't explain the criteria for papers and exams, which has caused a disconnect.
Nice and caring. she is an extremely harsh grader who gave students no direction as to how to write the final paper. She also did not give any guidelines as to how to study for the cumulative final which was ridiculously hard. Would take forever to grade assignments and always had a student in her office which made office hours extremely awkward
She is very engaging and funny. I reccomend!
Her exam is extremely hard and sometimes distracted. She only gives three exams and that takes the greatest portion of your grade. Exam questions are there to trick you. The class average is below C.
At the beginning of the spring semester, Professor Mercurio did not expect to be teaching PS261 again, however, despite this, she still pushed forward and attempted to make each class funny and interesting despite her health conditions. Lectures are extremely important in order to learn the content but each class she tries to make interesting.
Dr. Mercurio is undoubtably very nice but it feels like test questions are often very ambiguous. I (think I) took really good notes and still never felt confident after the tests because they are often super specific and leave some of the answers feeling super similar. She's super nice though and lectures are interesting.
Dr. Mercurio is an amazing professor! This is the third class I have had with her and she does an excellent job at fostering discussion and talking about the real-world implications of concepts. There is a group project, midterm, and final as well as a few homework assignments, though everything builds off of the lectures and readings.
Dr. Mercurio did an excellent job making a course with incredibly heavy material both enjoyable and comfortable. There are weekly group projects and several homework assignments, with a ten-page final paper at the end. She is very caring and understanding with deadlines; don't be afraid to ask for an extension if you need it!
When I took this class, I felt unheard and unwelcomed. I am coming from a background with a culture that is very different from the western, and anytime I expressed my opinion, professor didn't want to listen to a different perspective. Later, anytime I raised my hand, I was ignored unless I was the only person who raised a hand. Very political.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE! Exams are highly nuanced and impossible, and 75 percent of your grade! I have had some professors in the psych dept make tough exams, but they made them worth only 35 percent. The one pro is that she brings her dog to class, but she sometimes talks to her dog and goes off-topic during lectures.
Dr. Shim, who is fantastic, was supposed to teach this class, but I only found out she was teaching it at the last minute. Her exams were IMPOSSIBLE, and I was studying for hours on end. There is a place for complex tests, but they should be there to challenge you, not trick you and make you question everything you've learned.
I cried nightly after attending every lecture and studying tirelessly for exams only to fail every single one! I retook this class with Dr. Chloe Jordan and got a B. avoid mercurio at all cpsts
naur. dont take her class
I had to make this class pass/fail bc her exams were so hard and worth basicallu our entire grade. avoid merc
Annoying and not as funny as she thinks she is. all ive learned is to choose better profs
no structure whatsoever. i wish i had taken jordan.
Avoid at all costs. Grading criteria is extremely unclear and hurts all students. The main grades are the final (impossible) and the final paper for the project (also quite impossible). Severely hurt my GPA. Take this with literally anyone else
I wrote this after she sent the class an email explanation. I quote: "44% of the class received an A or A- 14% of the class received a B+ 16% of the class received a B 12% of the class received a B- 4% of the calss received a C+ 7% of the class received a C 3% of the class received below a C TBH I think her lecures are good, but not exam questions
I got the SAME EMAIL i swear those statistics mustve been fabricated bc those tests were so hard and nearly everyone else i talked to aslo stugged. Also I agree she is funny and lectures are fun but the things she said were moreso in the textbooks versus lectures
I can see a lot of negative feedback about Dr. Mercurio, which is silly. At the very start of the semester, she provides a rubric with expectations for the paper, and a HUGE step by step guide. All you have to do to succeed in the class is show up, take decent notes, and ask questions. If you don't, you'll struggle, like literally any other class.
I understand why some people might not like Dr. Mercurio's teaching style but you literally get told everything on the first day of classes. Yes the class is test-heavy, but honestly, I learnt so much just from talking to Dr. Mercurio; she is super nice and caring. She said she doesnt give EC but ended up giving 2 EC assignments overall super nice!
Professor Mercurio is engaging and really wants students to succeed. While the exams can be tricky, her lectures are clear and she provides helpful resources like study guides. I found unstuck study to be a great supplement for test prep. Overall, a rewarding class.
Go to lecture and take notes and you'll be fine.
Mercurio is nice, but my god, her experimental class will end you. She depends on rubrics that are extremely broad and does not give specifics on what you should be doing, but then grades your assignments as if you are a grad student and should know exactly what to do. She does not grade taking into account we are learning how to do this.
She is a very tough grader, but is an amazing lecturer. So long as you take good notes and utilize resources like Quizlet, you will do okay for sure.
Mercurio is a great lecturer who was very entertaining. Make sure to take good notes bc exams were based on very specific examples from class!!
The tests are SO HARD make sure you write down EXACTLY what she says in class because her exam questions are super duper tricky
she lectures fine but she def has favorites and if you're not one of them good luck... doesn't matter how much effort you put into. Also quizzes are hard. Just take mello-goldner for experimental
Extremely harsh grading criteria, but not very involved or engaged as a teacher. Be prepared to write a 1.5 page long written "response" each week for class that will be graded as a mini-essay. A LOT of work for the class it is.
Dr. Mercurio is a great person and I can tell she is very intelligent and cares about teaching this class. However, if you don't write down word for word exactly what she says in class you will fail the exams. I studied for months and took what I think are great notes and I failed both exams and will have to drop the class.
Learned a lot in this course and felt like I improved my writing.
Professor Mercurio is a very engaging professor, and I was never bored in her lectures. She is very helpful in her office hours, especially when going over past tests and mistakes. I recommend taking notes on everything she says in lectures because that's what she will put on the test, she gave no homework. She brings her cute dog to class!!
Dr. Mercurio is a great lecturer. If you attend lecture, take notes, and do the extra credit she offers (easy and quick to do), you'll probably get an A.
class could be fun for discussions but the workload is too heavy. never know what notes to take. so much reading and assignments every week 500 words. final paper, a student led discussion, and final exam, she's also a tough grader. for the student led discussion instructions were unclear.
would never take her again in my life! such unclear grading criteria, grades so harshly, material is nice and fun to discuss, class layout and organization ruins it.
I would never take this professor again. I went into PS472 expecting to learn in depth about family violence, but it was the most boring, uninformative content. Mercurio does not provide sufficient rubrics to follow that includes everything she wants, and instead will just give you low grades (especially the student-led discussion). awful professor
I think she gets a bad wrap because there's a large learning curve to get used to for her. She gives 3 exams throughout the semester, each is 25%. The first one people usually do bad on because she words questions weirdly, but you get used to it the second go around. If you pay attention in class and take good notes to review, you'll do fine.
