she's so scatterbrained. SHE HAS FAVORITES. if you're not one of them, you gotta work twice as hard.
Andrea is AWESOME!!! She really cares that you get EVERYTHING you can form this course. She does an awesome job of letting you know some of what to expect when your are ready to venture out into the world of advertising. I would strongly recommend her class to anyone looking to better their work. She lets you use your own ideas and think.
This class is great. You look forward to it every week. It's very intimate, meaning you interact with classmates so much that you become friends with them! It's an open atmosphere, and Andrea does a fantastic job creating that kind of environment for everyone. She's professional and she's just a good person in general. It's definately worth it.
Andrea is always willing to help a student who is willing to put their effort into their work. She promotes students to think and make better work through concepts and strengthening layouts. She has experience in the design field and knows what she's talking about. Her classes are very fun because everyone gets to know each other.
andrea is an AWESOME mentor, she just wants you to learn things on your own more instead of spoon feeding!! which is how the real world works!! at least from her experience, so if you want a class thats based on our own desire to succed, take it with andrea :)
Great class. Don't get comfortable and don't procrastinate. This class is only for serious students of marketing/advertising. This is an Art class so you will do 40-100 thumbnails per project. If you don't work well with other people you won't be able to produce good work. She expects you to be very proactive and to be a problem solver!Good lu
If you want to learn something, take her classes! She makes you think, knows what she's doing, and is willing to help you out as much as she can. If she yells at you, thats a good thing. Don't fall behind, she will put into you as much as you put into your work. I learned more from her than any class at UCLA extention but I had to work hard.
Great class atmosphere. Andrea will go out of her way to help you if you're interested in learning.
Shes tough
The best teacher I ever had. I really got a lot out from that class.
I am glad I was a student of hers. She has a great personality, good attitude, and grades you based on your skill, not effort (no, its not like high school). If your work is terrible, she will explain why. You have to do the work in order to learn the material. So its not a field you will understand just by reading the textbook. She is great!
She's so annoying! She can't spell for crap. Class time isn't used wisely. The homework is very vague, she doesn't explain anything well. You will have to re-do everything most assignments. If you aren't naturally amazing, you fail, no matter how hard you work.
She is most likely a better teacher when teaching more experienced students, but with beginning students she is not the best teacher. She is confusing and gives contradictory instructions. She doesn't tell you what she wants plenty of times and then is unhappy if you fail to provide that. She has favorites, so to do well, become her favorite.
She came the first day, missed the next 3. Based an opinion on me the first day, since then I've been trying my absolute best and still considers me a slacker. I only missed the FIRST assignment because she was gone for 3 days straight and I didn't get the memo that it was no longer a group project. Only gives me harsh criticism, 0 constructive.
She gave me a really hard time the whole semester, but gave me an A in the end. It's only frustrating because a lot of us are used to having teachers tell us what they want, how they want it and when. she lets you figure it out on your own, think outside the box, and will give extra time if she sees you can still improve.
If you are serious about design, and are willing to invest the time required to really learn, then she is a fantastic teacher. DO NOT take her class if you are a slacker, find a diff instructor. She gives a lot of work but is fair. If you need more time, just ask her. Some might find her a bit intimidating but she's really nice and wants to help.
If you want to get an easy A take a different teacher, but if you're a serious minded student eager to learn the skills necessary to make it in the art world, take Andrea's class. She's tough, but the quality of your work increases exponentially by the time the semester is over if you are willing to invest your time and work hard.
I had so much fun in her class! She is one of my favorite teachers. She definitely pushes you to do your best, but if you can't even give her that much respect and slack off, don't bother taking this class. Her philosophy is that through hard work & process, you get great end results and I have seen my work get better after taking her class.
I took her graphic design class for fall 2009 and I really didn't enjoy her class as much as I thought I would. At first she was all over the place but then she got everything together towards the end of the semester. Assignments wasn't that difficult, but she was just useless. I even asked her a question and she ignored me. I didnt like her at all
Took her graphic design class and got a B, didnt really like it at all. She really expects alot from you (maybe a little too much) so I recommend taking her beginner classes instead of attending her class fresh. Assignments were a pain and frustrating. Her lectures weren't inspiring or interesting...
this is the teacher ur looking 4 2 have ur skills push 2 the limits,so if ur one of those with games i advise u 2stay away cuzz this teacher is up on her game.an she will search 4 the best in u if ur willing 2 work hard with her.I don't just want 2get by in design, iwant 2 be one of the best.so if u feel the same way i do,take her.she will suprise u
I am speaking in general here. Yes, she may not be clear on some certain things but favorites? That's high school. If you want to be a "favorite" then work your butt off. Show your process and what not to meet her expectations. If you take your major seriously, then welcome to the real world. Slackers won't be accepted at this level.
My experience in her class was tough but good, Andrea is a great instructor. She really pushes you to find your niche and really develop your designs. She doesn't sugar coat things so expect to be told the truth about your designing abilities! :D
Don't take her class if you expect to be taught how to use basic graphic design programs &/or techniques. She expects everyone to know or figure it all out on their own. She's more concerned with getting all of her students to attend Art Center than teaching. Frustrating esp if you aren't an GD major. Not organized at all.
She always changed her mind with assignments and was never clear. Never actually taught me anything about graphic design - just waisted my time. She's really nice as a person, but definitely not the greatest professor. I know she loves teaching, but she's more concerned with enrollment numbers than teaching the attending students.
Keep your head down and do the work. Ask questions to Andrea or your fellow classmates for clarity on assignments. Invest the time to commit to your work and all is fine.
Andrea is a great professor! She work work you until your fingers bleed, but the results make it soooo worth it! She's forgetful at times, but who isn't?! And she usually changes her mind about things for the benefit of the students. She cares so much about enrollment numbers because she wants everyone to make it into her class! She is wonderful!
Amazing Professor. She definitely helps you through to the end even when you're in a ditch. People say this class is hard cause they're lazy. Just do the work and you'll be surprised on the level of design you're capable of. Very fun class, especially cause everyone in the class interacts with each other and constantly helps one another.
Andrea is an incredibly nice teacher if you show commitment. She is very knowledgable and she will share everything with you to help you get better. She will always push you, she will not let you settle for something crappy. Anyone serious about art and design will definitely benefit from her greatly. She is an incredible person.
Those that dont understand the time it takes to get the true difficulty of graphic design and need spoon feeding will not like this class AT ALL. She is an amazing teacher that is beyond the normal expectation of any teacher. THE BEST. She will get you where you need to be, not just art center. Work will always get better and it will hurt good!
Andrea knows what shes talking about and will get you where you need to be knowledge wise. the only catch is you cant have any outside life what so ever. including a job or other classes. Her classes are difficult and require excessive amounts of time for not the ideal outcome. If you have a ton of time on your hands and want a challenge go for it.
Andrea's class is a hard class. If you are planning on taking any of her classes 2D included thinking that its just an art class no real time and effort is needed that art class are just an easy class to take, YOUR WRONG!. Andrea is an amazing teacher and person with a big hart and is willing to help those who well AREN'T LAZY!Just work hard!!!!
She's and awesome teacher. Its not hard. just do whats required and you'll actually learn something new. Everyone in that class becomes friends and there are always helpful people in the class.
Tough but fair, definitely pushes you to get the best out of you. Changed my learning style for sure!
Amazing professor!!!!!
I'm going to warn you, you are going to have to work in this class and work hard. But the outcome will far exceed the stress the work you will produce will be your best. Don't believe what people tell you, if you work hard and show progress she will help you to the utmost of her ability. She will also fight for you to get into an art school.
Took her for 2d design in spring. She may seem harsh but any criticism she gives is for your own benefit. The work she gives is quite challenging so i wouldn't suggest taking a lot of other hard classes if you are planning to take this one. I feel more confident in my work after taking her class and as long you try hard it isn't that bad
I had her for 2D Design in Spring, and it was a challenging class. She is a harsh professor but she's VERY helpful and teaches a lot of pratical skills! Especially in the world of art where competition is very high, I feel like I learned a lot of valuable things from this class. She really wants the best for her students so long as you work hard!
This was my second art class, and wow did I transform. Andrea pushes you to be a better artist, and that is all you should ask for from an art professor. Even still, she does more.
After having transferred I can't believe how much I have truly learned from Andrea's class. She's difficult but only to get you to do your absolute best work and to understand the material. Work hard, and do as many roughs as you possibly can-it makes the material more concrete and you'll actually learn more. She's the absolute best at El Camino!
Andrea tries very hard to make sure that students earn the success they deserve. She is a hard worker and expects just as much from her students. She is honest which forces you to work to the best of your ability. She is the Rembrandt of teachers!
If you are serious and have passion for this field then you will want to take her. She is challenging, but so is the industry. Think of the assignments as self-exploration for your passion and inner child. I was a "late bloomer" with all of them, but once I got it - I REALLY got it. If I had more than 350 words to type, I would. I love you Andrea.
The principles and elements of design are the core base of this class. If you are really interested this field then I recommend taking her. Andrea is one of the very few professors that really, I mean really care about her students. She will definitely help you processes your ideas to another level. TAKE HERE!!!
I''ve HEARD she''s tough but a good teacher. She is tough. I got an A did everything she wanted a TON of thumbnails. But half the time she wasn''t even there to help guide students who were struggling and when she was she spent most of that time complaining about her students not getting it. Problem seeker not a problem solver.
Andrea is an amazing teacher if you want to actually to learn and make art that you could use in an art school portfolio. It seems like basic stuff, but the skills you learn like diligence, attention to detail and excellence will not be found in any other class. She is a character, but just view her as the carnig, firey Greek aunt you never had.
Andrea Micallef is the most comprehensive Graphic Art teacher I've had so far. I learned more about art and what makes good art in two semesters than whole of my previous experience. You WILL be a better artist after taking her classes than you are right now.
Her class is tough if you're not interested in it. You have to go to class in order to pass and if you miss a class, the good thing is you could just make it up on her other class sessions. You have to be meticulous and neat with your artworks or else you're gonna have to do that again. She's an excellent professor and very understanding.
let's be real - if you want to learn you will need to make the effort to learn Great Teacher for Design and Art Lessons
I was afraid to take this class because I heard she was tough. But I learned so much. My work got so much better and I feel Andrea was totally there for me yelling and cheering all the way. She is fair and you can go to any of the classes she teaches if you have a time conflict. I have never had a professor who cares so much about her students.
I have been going to this school for about 2 years now and I can honestly say that she is by far my favorite teacher I've had. She is so open and her class is so fun the 3 hours really flies by. I've recommended this class to 5 different people that aren't even artists. I am taking her again next semester for a different class. Can't wait.
She like your second mother in addition to teaching like the real world. I've had an internship for the last two summers at a design firm and what she says is right on point. I also never realized all the branding she has done. Lots of big clients like Nike, SAS, United Artists, Guess, Bodyglove ...
She pushes her students to make better work. She rambles at times. I personally dislike that she extends deadlines when people don't do the work. But regardless, she is a gem! She is very caring and invested in her students. Must take her class if you want to be a graphic designer!
I've taken her for 2 semesters now and I am coming back next semester too! She's my favorite professor at this school. I HIGHLY suggest you take her class. You get time to relax while working and there's potlucks at the midterm and final, how can you say no to that?
Really cares for her students and knows what shes talking about. All about the amount of time and effort put into the assignments with her. Honestly wished more teachers taug Can be tough if you're taking a bunch of classes so be wary of deadlines so you don't fall back because she can spot bs work from a mile away.
I love this teacher to death. She's funny and goofs around but makes sure you do well also. She appreciates hard workers and recognizes great talent. Even if you are an over achiever or crazy talented, she still expects better from you. A lot of work but so worth it. I highly recommend this professor and the class.
In 2D class, Micallef would always encourage students to work their hardest because she believes that anyone can be bigger and tougher than they really are. She is the best professor I could ever ask for and gives excellent feedback on how someone's skills are and what they should improve. I highly recommend people in art majors to take her.
I've been with andrea for 2 years now in and out of her class. She and I know each other very well, and she is like a second mother to me. She is the most caring professor I've ever met. No one has touched my heart as much as her. She cares SO much about her students. During the 2D final last semester she teared up because she was so happy.
Best life lessons I have learned. It's easy... SHOW UP, BE ON TIME, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, & WORK HARD!
Professor Micallef is AMAZING. Although she gives a lot of work for her projects, your work comes out awesome. She really cares for students. If she gets on you about your work, it means she cares. She wants you, her student, to be the best version of yourself so you can succeed in school and most importantly, industry. DEFINITELY TAKE HER!
Prof Micallef is one of the best professors I've ever had. If you're an art major, I 100% recommend taking her. She really wants you to get serious about what you're going to do and gives realistic advice. She has critiques that help a lot with the projects you're given. She's blunt, but for your own good to help you get the best grade possible.
Andrea is by far one of the best art professors I've had at Elco. She really cares for every student and their drive/work. If you dont take her or her class seriously then she wont take you seriously- so this isn't a class for someone who wants an easy A. Her class inspired me and taught me a lot about the industry and I hope to take her again!
One of my favorite teachers. If you want to succeed in life, take Micallef. You will get better at art and design after taking her classes. I highly recommend her. Yes she sometimes gets mad at the whole class because the work isn't good. But if you can toughen up a bit, you'll be fine. Trust me your first job will be even tougher.
Taking her class was pretty challenging. She doesnt allow late work and shes a very tough grader. It was pretty fun to be in her class, but she doesnt understand that we cant focus on just her assignments. She rambles a lot about how people are turning in crappy work and she gives low grades if you miss one thing. Just dont take this class.
I don't know if it was because it was her first covid class online but her rules were inconsistent and confusing. She would have postings on Facebook for participation but then suddenly in the middle of the semester say we had to attend "mandatory" zoom meetings which weren't stated in the syllabus. The work load was understandable but messy
Loved her class! Although you have to do a lot of work (which is drawing) it honestly makes you a better artist and makes you see view art differently. She talks like if shes mad, but shes not mad she just cares and is passionate about what she teaches. Just do your work turn it in and youll pass her class. She makes you a better artist
I dropped myself from the class. I have epilepsy and she accused me of using it to get out of doing assignments when the day before, I had a seizure AND let her know the day of. She denied work from me when it was due at 12AM (I pulled all-nighters when its unsafe for me in my condition but I turned it in on time, b4 12AM.)
She is unlike any art professor I have ever taken. She doesn't really think like most professors, and bases your grading on whether it looks good rather than meeting a specific criteria. Her criticism doesn't pinpoint what you need to improve on, it's more of a "this looks good" or "this doesn't look good" kind of critique. Time-consuming class.
She will be straight-forward with your work. Do not take her criticism to heart. You have to work really hard in this class so I recommend not taking it with a full schedule. I struggled in this class at first. She expects you to figure out the assignments on your own so I advise really getting to know your classmates. You make some great projects.
Absolutely a horrendous class. You have a project every week that takes at least a month to do but rushes into 1 WEEK. 16 projects WITH checkups during the middle of the week worth a 3rd, good luck if ur a last-minute person. NO LATE WORK. Each project also compounds so you are EXTRA screwed if you didn't do the last. Can't take ANY other class.
Text book quizzes were easy. I got the grade because I didnt turn things in on time (no late assignments!) but the assignments helped me learn a lot. We did 1 discussion & 1 assignment per week. Every material she lists you need 100%. She gives examples for every assignment which helped me know what to really do. She was great professor online!
This was definitely such a hard class especially for an art class, if you are not professional at art I repeat do not take this class. She grades really hard and the amount of work that needs to be done in a week for the amount of time she gives does not add up. It is a very hard class to catch up on so I recommend turning in everything on time.
This professor has an unnecessarily hard class because of her teaching style. Over complicates most the things she tries to teach us causing lots of slip ups . The work is tedious and never felt like I learned anything just doing the assignments. She also leans on the help of the pass mentors and TAs far too often which makes me question her teachi
I know Professor Micallef can be a little...HARD TO SWALLOW. However, many of the students mistaken her teaching because she's putting herself in the shoes of an employer in the design industry and they can be really...FRIGHTENING. I know her reliance on the pass-mentors can be off-putting but they are convenient, she's a nice professor in the end.
I learned more in 16 weeks than I did in 4 years at the Art School I attended in NYC. If you just want an easy grade, take someone else. She tells it straight and if you read all the information and look at the videos and examples you will do well. She cares and is accessible and has lots of TA's and Pass Mentors to help you. Take this class
Perhaps the most unprofessional professor I've had so far. This course will completely make you lose your passion for art. The TA's are more of your professor than she is. Avoid this teacher if you can!
Took this class last spring and the first few weeks were scary. It is the hardest class I've ever taken. Do not procrastinate any assignments!! You will learn a lot from this class, especially about yourself, but I'm so much better at my art history classes now that I've taken this class. Be open, accept the workload and this class will reward you!
The professor doesn't even answer any questions that you might have about HER assignments, she leaves it to the TAs. The turn in for assignments online is horrendous, no matter what it tried nothing worked and I continue to get points off for not turning it in correctly. Make sure to join the FB group because that is the only chance you have.
Andrea was a very insightful and helpful professor. It is a tough class but if you follow all the guidelines, stay on track with dates, and put in effort, you will receive a good grade. She is straightforward and blunt but she means well. The TA's grade the work but she overseas everything turned in. The FB group helped get extra feedback on work.
Where do I even start? If you're not required to take this class DO NOT TAKE IT! Six hours of in-person classes on TOP of 12 hours of work outside the class is absolutely ridiculous. If you have a life and are not a design major this class is utter busy work and USELESS unless you are trying to build a portfolio for transfer. Never again.
Ask questions to TA' s and the Prof. (Office Hours). She could care less about the easy pathway where everyone wins, so do your work, and you'll earn what you work for, that's college. Also, (beware) Prof. Micallef is going to tell you how it is in the real world of art jobs. Talk to her if you are interested in the art/design. Overall, fun class.
not the class to take online. all projects are worth huge chunks of points. very difficult to talk to the actual professor because she has a shield of TAs to go through first. spent hours on the 500 point final and her and her TAs combined didnt ever get around to grading it.
Learned the most from this class out of all my other classes. Micallef is great for if you really want to understand the principles and push your work to prepare for transfer, but the workload was borderline insane, especially towards later in the semester. Workload will take away from your other classes.
I wouldn't recommend the class to anyone who isn't required to take it. A lot of work that's repetitive and over-redundant. It's a lot of tracing and using only source images, everything must be sourced and traced with a light table. The grading is late so the comments made on previous assignments are outdated. I'd stay clear.
Class-time feels pointless, as you're just doing the work you would be doing at home. Late work is a pain in the butt to submit with 20 point automatic deductions meaning all assignments under 20 points can not be done for late credit AT ALL. You have to go through the TA's to submit latework who also take the class more seriously than the teacher.
IF you just want to be a slacker, you will not like her. But if you want to learn something, she is the best you will ever have. I can not believe the work that comes out of her class. She is really good. But you will work your ass off.
Bet most knowledgeable professor I have ever had. If you want to get better and learn, take her. She is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. She will give you the shirt off her back if you put in even the smallest amount of effort. But if you want to slide, don't take her. She will call you on it
You will never learn as much as you will learn in her class. I worked so hard but now my work is so much better. She also got me a huge scholership to Art Center and all I did was ask,. SHe has taught everywhere and knows everyone in the industry
She really knows her stuff. She has worked for some super big names and has done real famous logos. I had a degree in graphic design from CSULB and a professor of mine told me to take her class. I'm glad I did. Learned more in her class than 4 years at CSULB. It's so much work but worth it.
Take her class but plan on doing lots of work. You won't believe how much better your art gets. She will tell you if it's bad so be prepared. She's awesome. I got a job because of what I learned in her class.
It's a hard class but if you're wanting to go into this field, you will not regret taking the class. I was afraid to take her class. But if you try she will really help you do well. Only students who are lazy or are in for an easy class don't like her. She really is awsome!
She's really good. Lots of work but you will see your work get better. Only lazy students don't like the class. She will really challenge you. You will learn so much!
Learned so much. Lots of work.
You will not regret all your hard work when you see how good your work gets
I graduated with a BA from UCLA but learned more in her class in one semester. Lots of effort but worth it!
I'm an animator and this class really helped my work get stronger! Lots of available help if you need it.
I took the class on-line and always received a follow up email from professor. If she did not call, she somehow got a hold of a TA and they emailed me back. Even if it was 2am. I learned so much and got into LB my first attempt. Every item in my portfolio was from taking her call.
Lots of work but definitely worth it in the end!
Best class I ever took
Lots of work that pays off big!!!
Professor is always available to help. I learned so much. She seems mean but when you reach out and get to know her, she's so cool.
She's funny and she's hot. But she's tough!
I took it online and I wish I had taken it in class. I had trouble so I went in to see her and she helped. People are afraid of her. I was at first, but she really cares. She even called a couple professors and got me into their classes when I couldn't get in. It's a lot of work, but I learned a lot and my work out better.
I'm a junior ant CSULB and I kept seeing work that was really good. I finally asked students in my classes how they got so good and I kept hearing her name. So even though I'm a full-time CSULB student, I went to ECC to take her class. Best class I ever took!
Very knowledgeable. Tough but you get a lot out of the class
Really knows the subject. Has designed lots of logos and brands you know. Very funny too
Worked harder in her class and learned more than any class I took when I got my first degree at UCLA
Should have taken it in class not on line. I would have seen other students work and made connections with my peers
If you don't do it right she makes you do it again and again. Tough class but I learned so much
I never slept the whole semester. Lots of work but worth it
I took this class twice it was so good
Loved her pancakes
Learned so much my work got so much better
Excellent class
I wish I could take her class over and over
My work got so good cause of her
She runs the place
She always was available . Maybe not the day I emailed, but she always got back to me. That meant a lot and helped me do better.
Amazing class
Best on line class I've tajen
I got a job because of that class. It was worth the work I did
