take her, shes awesome
Really rude. You can tell she hates the students. I got a good grade, but it was not worth it.
Shes from Canada I think. So take that into consideration. A little on the...eccentric side. Talks about pot, alcohol and sex in her lectures about pleasures. Overall a decent lady and doesnt ask those weird philosophical questions all the time.
Professor Veltman is great! She tells jokes sometimes and tries to keep you engaged in class. Has some tricky exam questions, but the study guides are a big help.
Beware of disagreeing with her. She will think you are stupid and give you a lower grade. (I thought philosophy was about thinking, but I guess it is not about thoughts that disagree with her thoughts.) Just repeat how you love the polar bears, forests, women, and every liberal cause and you will be fine.
Assigns lots of reading, but don't do it, she covers everything in depth in class. Wants to be british, and she has a book published by Oxford so she knows about the subject. Tests are tricky but she gives you a thorough study guide and plays jeapordy review. If you go to class, you'll get a B in the class never reading a single page.
At first i was skeptical because of her incredibly perfect language. She continually talked in the form of "one" (One would be lucky to go to heaven.) HOWEVER, she is the****. IF YOU DONT TAKE HER YOU ARE INSANE. she loves her students and encourages one on one meetings. Super easy, very lenient with tests. AMAZING!
Shes kinda weird but a great teacher. Shes really eassy and if you have a problem she is eassy to talk to i would definatley recomend taking her
Pretty easy class. Ridiculously boring, though. The only entertaining thing is that your sure to have the one guy whos real into it and just makes a fool of himself. Attendance didn't seem mandatory but she took attendance every once in a while so who knows. Makes good study guides so if you have notes (or you know a girl with them), you'll do fine
Veltman is amazing! Very clear and intersting. After taking this class, I wanted to major in GHum.
Great woman, engages everyone in deep discussion. Encourages opposing views, tests kind of tricky but very do able and great study guides, i may be in love with her.
Kind of rigid. Views are too strong, almost to the point of arrogance. Textbooks not that necessary.
Attendance isn't mandatory but is part of your grade so try to go if you can, only use the text books for the ridicously easy reading responses, my only objection is that she doesn't give us enough information to make our essays 3 pages double spaced for tests
Dr. Veltman is pretty amazing. She's hillarious and brilliant, probably one of my favorite professors after coming to JMU. If you take notes and pay attention in lecture you can get at least a B on all of the tests and take home essays. If you have a limited vocabulary or can't think for yourself you shouldn't sign up.
I hated philosophy but she was a great teacher and isn't hard at all...only thing that is difficult is the multiple choice section on exams. Wish i liked philosophy because i would definitely like to have her again
great professors, she loves the subject and is very knowledgeable. She also has a great sense of humor. The tests are all based on the notes and the book is barely used.
Loved her!
She is great. There is an essay component for every test (that is take home) She is the first prof I've had that is not judgmental and really listens and takes in what students have to offer. She cancels class alot, which is upsetting. You will definitely benefit to taking any class with her.
this class was very boring, although I learned some interesting stuff. but all the stuff on the test is basically from her lecture notes so going to class really pays off. tests aren't easy, but they aren't unfair either. still... VERY BORING.
Her lectures may be long but her notes are concise. Just show up, go over the notes and you'll do fine. Book-use was low but it helps to prep for test questions and take-home essays. I loved her class, it was easy.
Never ever thought I would enjoy philosophy but this class has proved me wrong! If you work hard and take notes in class you'll do well. The topics and theories are interesting - hands down the most useful class I've taken at JMU. Read the material for the tests and you'll do fine!
She's hilarious. She's incredibly smart, and her jokes are funny if you realize her humor.
Dr. Veltman is awesome! She's kind of an odd, eccentric lady, but she's really nice and clearly loves the subject. She's also incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. She will do her best to help you if you're confused. I love her tests because even though the multiple choice section is often tough, there is a take-home essay section that she grades very fairly. She is also not too quick to judge a differing viewpoint. She will listen to your opinion, if it is intelligently backed up.
Veltman's class isnt hard. We wrote 2 papers, both of which were easy and we have 2 tests which were a little hard but if you study the notes then you will do fine. She likes it when people debate and ask questions about the topic being taught but she does not call anyone out so you dont have to talk in class. Homework is really easy too
She takes attendance. 2 papers which she grades really fairly and 2 exams which are a little tougher. offers 2 extra credit opportunities. she never calls on anyone in class but often asks for students thoughts. her voice is a little monotone but she is interesting and very smart. loves when you come to office hours.
Every class she cracked me up with her mannerisms. I loved her, the two papers were easy and the test were alright. She also gives extra credit such as debates and a survey. I recommend her to anyone.
I LOVE Dr. Veltman! My favorite professor hands down. She is so intelligent and knows what she is talking about when she teaches. Extremely helpful and makes great use of office hours. Only two papers, midterm, and a final that come with study guides. Easy class, easy readings. Participate and she will love you. TAKE HER!!!
fun and easy class if you try. honestly the ONLY prof i miss at jmu.
She is really nice, but kindof has a monotone voice. Lectures are boring but she is really helpful. She provides a study guide for the tests which practically tells you what is on the test.
Very smart and open-minded. Incredibly feminist-egalitarian. Organized, good class structure, usually evolves into student discussion. Fair distribution & weight of work. Fair tests do well to evaluate how much you know. Likes students who actively engage in discussion and appreciates when students go the extra mile on essays.
Because I only took this class as a degree requirement (and an honors requirement), my initial interest was somewhat low. But the class itself was not difficult and the material was easy to comprehend and absorb. She's not the most engaging professor I've ever had, but for a class for which I had minimal interest, it wasn't bad at all.
Information is not hard. However on the tests EVERY single question has the choice D-All of the Above. Very tricky so you literally have to know everything. First test average 70. Second test average 71. Take a different class
Dr. Veltman is an odd lady, the female version of Sheldon Cooper. The lectures are dry and boring and reading the class text is a must. Be prepared for yourself to be called on and saying "I don't know" isn't the answer. Tests are difficult and tricky, most answers are all of the above. Very odd, eccentric lady.
In order to get a good grade in this class, you need to show up. She puts clear, concise notes up that convey EXACTLY what will be on exams.(Be prepared for lots of 'all of the above'). She is a really nice, funny lady and the class covers some really interesting ethical dilemmas. Lots of extra credit opportunities. TAKE HER!
Though she can be a little dry and boring sometimes, she actually has a very subtle sense of humor. The discussions in class were interesting, but the actual content sucked. Her tests are pretty hard but she had a lot of extra credit opportunities. I would recommend her!!
She assigns no homework, and only gives 3 exams. Her lectures are long and boring which makes it hard to pay attention.
This is about as good as it gets when it comes to a PHIL class. Definitely would recommend Veltman. She gives 2 extra credit opportunities worth 25 points. DO THEM! These are saving my grade. I tanked the first test but did great on the second when I learned how her testing styles work. Attendance isn't mandatory but go to get the notes. Take her!
3 exams, each a third of the grade, but she gives two substantial extra credit opportunities - use them. Her lectures were fine and her tests aren't too bad; just don't let all the "all of the above" options freak you out. Not the most fascinating class ever, but not outright boring either; good for a gen ed.
For this class, you have to show up. I don't know how other students do it, but almost ALL the material from the 3 tests we've had (the only grades) are from in class lectures and discussions. If you can, don't buy the required textbooks because I used them only sparingly - best you borrow from someone or the library. Lots of memorization, know it.
There are three test grades with an optional term paper and class debates. Tests were tough and every question had the option of D) All of the above. Study guides are provided which is helpful. Lectures are important and you NEED to take notes. Philosophy is not an easy subject. She is a good professor although she can be a little awkward at times

Dr. Veltman felt like a pretty average professor. Most of the class was just her lecturing and she just displays a word document with her notes. Its very easy to fall asleep in this class. There are only 3 tests, which make up you entire grade besides extra credit. She offers extra credit debates and a paper but its a long paper. Overall was fine.
Love love loveee Professor Veltman!! She is so sweet and her class is pretty easy! She gives out study guides for the tests which basically give you exactly what's on the test. Also she gives an optional debate and paper to boost your grade. Take her!
Take Veltman for PHIL 150! Class can be boring sometimes but it's not bad, discussion is interesting and she's subtly hilarious sometimes. Just take notes and study and it's an easy A. Great choice for this gened requirement!
Dr. Veltman's class is not difficult if you prepare for the test and do all the extra credit. She is very helpful in her office hours. Dr. Veltman tends to cancel class frequently, but she adjust the material as needed. Take this class!!
she was really nice and fun to take - obviously interested about the coursework. taking her next semester for another class!
I cannot stand Andrea Veltman. She can be nice, but is lacking in patience and excels in temper. Also, she seems feminist almost to the point of being sexist. I will never take a class with this incompetent, disgraceful professor again!
An all around awesome teacher. She gives study guides and hold a jeprody review session the day before tests. Has 5 open-note online quizzes, which are easy if you just read the material. Gives extra credit opportunities for those who struggle. Some find her lectures boring but I think she has a hilarious sense of humor. Really enjoy her class.
Lectures are a little bit boring, but she is very clear on what she is going to grade. 3 non cumulative tests (easy), 5 open notes online quizzes and extra credit paper.
Veltman is ok. I am a focused person so I thought I could get through her lectures, but they were SO dry, SO boring. It's sad because she is a really sweet lady, can be funny at times, but doesn't make a class that could be interesting, interesting. She gives great extra credit though, do it! Her tests are kind of hard.
this is the second time i am taking a course with dr. veltman. shes incredibly interested in her work and is even funny throughout the less interesting parts. grading is clear and lectures give u everything u need.
Veltman is the best professor I have had so far. There are five quizzes, all open book. Study guides are given and review session (jeopardy) before exams are extremely helpful. She even curves tests. Allows students to complete two extra credit paper worth up to 15 points. If you want to actually learn something, and gain a great grade take her!
Dr. Veltman sounds like a robot and gets boring so easily. I zoned out in class all the time, yet class is super important because she put notes on a word doc and the only place you access them is in class. She does 5 out of class open note quizzes grade booster worth 25% then 3 exams worth 25% each. 2 extra credit papers. Have to work for an A.
Dr. Veltman was my favorite professor this past semester and actually made me like philosophy. Since I'm a POSC major a lot of the philosophers we discussed were referenced in my other classes and that actually helped me out a lot. You have to participate but she makes it a very comfortable environment to do that in. Also has a good sense of humor.
If you want to get an A go to every lecture and write down everything she puts up on the screen. If you memorize this then don't worry about not being able to understand anything she says because it is SO hard to listen to her monotone voice. She gives 30 extra credit points for writing essays also, so it is pretty easy to get an A.
Veltman puts the slides up and you legit have to take down every word in order to study effectively for the test. She offers two term papers that are worth 15 extra credit points each, but the papers are long. Her voice is a bit monotone but she really enjoys what she is teaching and has a sense of humor when you least expect it.
Very knowledgable but holy crap. Her class is based off of 3 exams and that is IT! She gives one extra credit paper but it doesn't help much. The exams are extremely difficult and EVERY SINGLE QUESTION has the option of "all of the above." Great lady but would not recommend for PHIL101.
Very easy prof compared to my friends who've taken this class with others. Two extra credit papers and option for extra credit debate. I've hardly done any of the readings (although I should) but I'm doing fine. She has a very soothing voice, too, which is nice but careful not to fall asleep! Definitely recommend taking her :)
Veltman is a great professor. She is very clear about all the course content, even though class is very boring. If you go and take notes, her tests are very straight forward. She also gives you options to get about 40% of extra credit, which is awesome. The whole class is 2 tests, a final, and 5 quizzes. Easy class.
Need a easy A GenEd-Take her phil101 class. If you go to class and take notes I can guarantee a B or higher She has a review the class before, which is jeopardy. It goes over the answers on the study guide, which everything on it is on the test. The team who wins she gives boxes of candy too. She has open discussions in class. 10/10 would recommend
Professor Veltman is amazing at lecturing! She makes her lectures very interesting so that the material is very easy to remember. You can read the textbook, but honestly she covers the material in class and better than the book does. The tests are not that difficult and she offers papers you can do for extra credit.
I took her for PHIL101 and got a C+. That was my first semester of college and I had no idea what philosophy was. Now I'm a PHIL major and absolutely adored this course with Dr. Veltman. I'm doing very well in the class and I highly recommend taking it with her! (particularly if you enjoy social/political philosophy)
If you come to class and pay attention, it is very easy to get an A. She offered two extra credit papers worth 10-15 points added onto a test grade which was very helpful. Final is not cumulative! Tests are very easy because she puts a study guide with questions on canvas. DON'T waste money on the textbook, any material you need is given to online
Attend her office hours for extra credit papers and for the reviews she gives you before exams and you'll be fine.
Veltman is a great professor! She offers extra credit and does a review before each test. The final is not cumulative and there are two extra credit essays available. The tests are lengthy but all multiple choice.
Probably the most boring professor I have had. She's such a nice lady and I can tell she is passionate about the material but it is so difficult to pay attention in class when she drones on. She does give two extra credit assignments which is nice but the class is just so hard to enjoy.
Veltman has very long and boring lectures and hard online quizzes to take on canvas. Her tests are all multiple choice with an "all of the above" option on almost of the questions. Tests are difficult and meant to confuse you.
Amazing! Straightforward notes, dont need to read HW but definitely recommend. Go to class she doesnt post the notes. Yea maybe a little boring but shes funny and cares so much. Review day before each test. Fill out the study guide she gives it is basically the test. can get 10-15 points added to tests if u do extra credit papers (can do 2)
She is not the most exciting person in the world. If you do the reading and participate in the review days before each test I think you should be fine. She takes attendance so don't skip too much
She is not very exciting, so class can be boring. But she gives A LOT of extra credit opportunities. Class is just lectures and taking notes. I do not pay attention in class, but complete the study guide and participate in the test review days and I do well (As and Bs) on the tests
Dr. Veltman is a wonderful professor. This was my first Philosophy course and although the lectures were boring at times you learn a lot! Two easy extra credit papers for +15 each! Go to class & take notes and youll be golden :) Perfect & interesting elective to take.
Her voice sounds like Siri. She taught well but I would zone out sometimes. There are 3 extra credit opportunities (2 papers and a debate). I enjoyed the class as she opens the floor up for discussion but participating isn't mandatory although encouraged.
The online class was very clear and organized. Mainly open note quizzes and discussion board posts. As someone who does not enjoy online classes, I enjoyed this one!
This class is pretty easy. There is one 6-7 page reading, a discussion, and one 25 question quiz. As long as you pay attention to the reading then you will do well. Super easy to get ahead and finish all your work. Definitely recommend.
I took this class as an asynchronous course this semester. Basically, you read one chapter (10-15 pages), you take a short open book/note quiz, and you write a discussion post each week. No exams. Optional paper at the end for extra credit. I found the class to be interesting and easy. I'd recommend it.
Phil150's asynchronous weekly schedule was as follows: read one short chapter, take a quiz, make a discussion post. This made the class very easy to pass, but you're not going to interact with the prof at all, nor will you have meaningful discussions about the material with your classmates, so if that's something you want or need, don't take.
honestly, not sure how to rate this professor because i didn't have much, if any, interaction with her as it was asynchronous and there were no videos. you read, take a quiz, and write a discussion post. the class itself is super interesting but the quizzes were really specific and hard to do well on. would recommend this class if it wasn't online.
I had to fill a requirement for Cluster One, and I recommend it to anyone who needs to fill the Cluster One requirement or is just looking to take a basic philosophy course. Completely asynchronous, one easy paper, and daily (short) readings/discussion boards/quizzes is the class. Very doable for an online 4 week summer course. Highly recommend.
This was the easiest class I've ever taken. Everything is online and asynchronous. You read one short article per week, take a 20 question quiz on it, and post to a discussion board. She grades the discussion posts very easily. This class is very boring so if you're looking for more interaction I'd pass. If you want an easy gen ed, take this!!!
I took the online class and it was pretty easy. Every week you read, take a quiz, and write a discussion post. It did get boring, but if you like online classes and want a more flexible schedule, I would take it.
A discussion board and a quiz each week. Quizzes can be difficult, and the writing assignments aren't graded individually and her grading is pretty difficult. despite this though, its a really easy class and easy to keep up with. she's very accessible via email
One quiz and a discussion board each week. The quizzes can be very hard and the discussion boards need to be thought out and decently lengthy. There is an extra credit paper that you can write that can really boost your grade. I liked this course. It is definitely a lot better than going to an in-person lecture for this class.
This is the easiest class I took this semester. All online, grade is just discussion boards and quizzes on super straightforward readings--no final or midterm. Prof. Veltman is super nice and gives caring feedback on your responses, and makes it easy to reach out to her. No textbook and the readings are provided free. Take for a lighter gen-ed.
Class was completely online, asynchronous. Very easy with only a chapter from provided PDFs to read, a quiz, and a discussion board due every Thursday.
Super sweet and will answer emails quickly. There is one reading quiz and discussion post every week and the discussions are graded in groups so as a midterm and final. The class is definitely doable!
This was online asynchronous and very easy. Took me a max of about 3 hours per week for the discussion boards but the tests were very easy and you could usually find the answers easily as well.
Extremely easy, probably the easiest class at the whole university. No homework, tests, projects, papers, just weekly canvas quizzes. The quizzes are multiple choice canvas quizzes based off 5 - 9 pg textbook readings that are given to you.
The class is async and not difficult, consisting of reading/quizzes/discussion boards.
it's an easy class if you take it online, weekly readings/ quizzes I definitely recommend taking her
Pay attention to lectures b/c it's a good place to help guide your reading, but if you don't read at all, you won't do well on the exams. She picks very specific examples from the readings on the exams that you would only know if you actually did the readings.
Dr. Veltman is a wonderful professor! There are 3 exams, each worth 25% of your grade. About 15-20 pages of reading due most classes. Participation is very important, even if your class doesn't talk much. Everyone has to participate in a group presentation that lasts 30-40 minutes. This class improved my public speaking, if anything!
Took PHIL101 online fall sem, 1 reading and quiz due each friday. Final is not super long and workload is super light for an online class! Def take if u need a gen ed in this category or j want to add another credit to ur schedule.
