I absolutely loved Prof. Zeren. She is so spacey it's hilarious. Almost every student takes both of her classes. She scales her tests and gives endless extensions. You just need to make sure you have extra copies of your work because she loses things, but her classes are awesome!
She was awesome. She's tough but a good way. She gets the material across and her tests arent too hard. I liked her better for adulthood and old age psych. Shes definitely a feminist and funny woman.
I had Zeren for general psych and never took another class with her again. She was so so. I worked with her personally on research in a directed study and thought she was not very good to work with.
She writes amazing letters of recommendation if you ever need one. Harsh grader on oral presentations, but otherwise a great teacher.
Zeren is great... I recommend her 100%. I learned so much, and if I had a question today... I am confident that I could go to her and she would have the answer and take the time...anyone would b lucky to take her if not once twice!
I did not like or dislike Zeren. Found she had favorites in this class and wasn't crazy about that.

strongly dislike her after having her, she is very annoying and hard to listen to for 75 mins.she eats in class every day-so distracting. gave out horrible study guides that told u to know everything and didnt give them till night before test. her tests luckily weren't that bad if u read the chapter. i wouldn't want to take her again
she is a horrible professor. her instructions were very unclear and she was disorganized. she didn't take any late work(not stated on syllabus). her face says be intimidated. i would not recommend her to anyone. never take her for a seminar.

this was one of those classes that i was actually excited to take and would have enjoyed more had it been taught by someone different... she was very disorganized, demanded extensive work, and was just plain annoying. I would not take her again for anything
I liked this professor. Yes, you have to work and definitely pay attention to her lectures. She covers alot of material but I learned alot. She's fair but "no nonsense." Would definitely take a class with her again.
Childhood. Good and nice teacher. Exams are somewhat hard. She scales them. Reading the chapters are a must to pass the class (40p a ch. 3ch a test).
She seems really nice in class, she is funny and laughs with you. Sounds good right? Yeah well she also laughs while marking every little thing wrong on your exams. She does not even count participation or homework towards your average. Unfortunately she is the only one that teaches this class. Be aware.
She is really nice but sometimes her class work was tedious. She is kind of strict on attendance and she will give you an attitude if you mess up in her class (skip classes, not do work, etc)
Awesome prof! Loved her. She is kind of disorganized but she is a good prof. She is a little quirky, she has a dry sense of humor but it's funny in class. Tests are super hard, but I liked her a lot. She will like you as long as you go to class and especially if you do well on her tests. No papers, just a few response journals here and there.
I thought she was awesome. As long as you go to class everyday, read the chapters and take good notes, you'll do fine. Also, if you attend every class she boosts your grade up half a letter.
She doesn't teach. Her assessments are not inline with what happens in her classroom. She comes and goes. She's even a little mean.
i have never rated a professor b4 but she is so TERRIBLE i feel it necissary to let everyone else know. Shes mean she doesnt teach & when she does she doesnt know what shes talking about or teach what you need to know for the test. you teach yourself EVERYTHING. it takes you hours to read a chapt and each test is 3 chapt.'s. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Zeren is the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of being taught by. She puts her personal opinion in your business and makes rude comments and snide remarks. Her tests are super hard, and she gives horrible study guides. When I asked for help, she brushed me off saying she could only concentrate on one thought at a time. RUDE..
I have Zeren for Childhood & Adolescence, and I love her! She is hilariously spacey, but is incredibly intelligent and knows all of the material, and she's very good about making time for talking over exams, discussions, etc. during her office hours (she even recommends office meetings on the exams). I'm hoping to have her again for Adulthood.
This is the worst professor I have ever had!!! She is very spacey and does not teach during class. Tests are extremely hard, we take tests on things not even touched upon in class. I would never recommend her!!!!!
Terrible, terrible, terrible. She has no clue how to grade or scale, but thiks she does. She is not helpful at all, and is rude when you ask her a question. You pretty much have to teach yourself and read the book, she does nothing in class. Most of the time she gets confused on what she was saying.
Smart. Encourages discussion. A little spacey, like the others say, but it is only part of her character, and so far, has not harmed the class. Very nice. Funny. Fun. Interesting class. Not as clear cut as some, but has a thought provoking perspective.
She is great, and she really knows her stuff. The first week or two was rocky, but you have to put effort into this class; its not an easy A. I would definitely take a class of hers again.
Dr. Zeren is a very intelligent professor who encourages participation and active students. If you do the reading, show up in class and participate in discussion you will do well. She is more than helpful with questions and is entertaining in class. Great personality!
I do not suggest taking her psy 218 class. She isn't helpful and moves through material before students even grasp it. She "calls" students out and makes them feel uncomfortable. Overall, poor quality. I'm an "A" student and I found her class difficult.
She thinks highly of herself. Engages in appalling behavior and communications with her students, when she is alone with them. She's do as I say not as I do. Waits to the last minute to explain test. Misses more classes than her students. Trades off teaching with her husband. Good luck trying to keep things straight
Her joking is a mask. She's not a good teacher. Offers no assistance to the student. Exams are unnecessarily long. Does not prepare students for exams until the day of the test. Didn't learn from her, except how to rewrite DSM IV.
So, I hadn't heard great things about this class, but Dr. Zeren is the only one who teaches it. I was pleasently surprised. Although the class lowered my GPA, I think I learned the most in this class than in any other thus far. Tests are incredibly long and laborious, but the material covered is essential for anyone in the program.
After taking a week-long institute course with her, I will never take another class with her again. Attended all classes and completed all work as required - did not receive any grades or feedback on assignments. Respectfully emailed her asking for feedback on overall grade and individual assignments - was never given a response. RUDE.
This is my first class with this professor and my last!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!! If I could drop it I would! She grades extremely hard! doesn't answer your questions about the quizzes or essays very clearly. All her quizzez and essay exams are timed and you only have 3 days to do them. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER!!!
This teacher grades extremely hard. The quizzes are passible, but the exams are timed giving you only 30 minutes to answer 2 out of around 6 possible essay questions. She expects you to do them all in advance. Unless you're ok with doing a lot of work that will be scrutinized with anything wrong being held against you, I would find another teacher.
Dr. Zeren is not an easy teacher, but this is the class I have learned the most from at Salem State. She is very thorough in presenting diagnosing, and engages the class in every step of the process. It is a very open and informative class. Dr. Zeren really knows her stuff, and she teaches it well.
Great class, useful subject matter and innovative teaching. Dr. Zeren has thoughtfully designed a class structure to help navigate a tough and cumbersome subject matter. She takes the class opinions seriously and is patient as we digest the information.
Dr. Zeren maintained the entire class' attention through material that one would otherwise expect to be very dry. She was able to present complex material in a manner that was extremely comprehensive and interesting. Dr. Zeren also went out of her way to ensure all students were treated as equals and grading is done in a manner that is unbiased.
Dr. Zeren has developed a great way of teaching a very difficult course! She uses the socratic method & pushes the class to reach for understanding, is very fair in her grading, and goes out of her way to ensure that her students are comfortable in her class & working together as a team. If you like a challange you'll love this course!
Dr Zeren is one of the nicest teachers I have had in the PSY department. She is so helpful. This class is worth taking. You learn so much about family and especially how to make a marriage work! It is a lot of work because of the research paper, but she is right there to help you along the way! I highly recommend this class!
Dr. Zeren is very helpful when it comes to the 20 page research paper assigned. She shares great resources, and helps us to not leave the paper for the last minute. One drawback is the crazy amount of reading assigned, and some if it is irrelevant to the course. You will learn A LOT about marriage and not so much about the family. Great class! :)
It seems I had a quite different experience with Zeren than most students..as a grad level class I felt that she didn't really "teach" and that she failed to cover important material. Unless you want to be more confused than when you started, I wouldn't recommend her (although I think she is the only one that teaches Diff. Diag, unfortunately)
I would just like to say that she was a pretty bad advisor. She would berate me for not filling out a piece of paper first, run around talking to other people to get any answer for my questions, and would eat over my paper once I did fill it out. Not what an advisor should be. Rude, unapproachable, and not in the habit of helping.
She was an awful professor, was so disorganized and took far to long to return papers and exams. Highly recommend not taking her!
Professor Zeren at one point in class asked if Broca and Wernickes areas were on the left or the right side of the brain, and when I laughed she said she was serious and she "forgot". The only thing I remember from this class is that newborns can't see very well. She also takes attendance very seriously. I would NOT recommend this class.
I thought Dr. Zeren was an excellent instructor for a class (Differential Dx) that could have been a horribly boring. She is interactive and made the material interesting. Tests are tough, but she is very fair and does what she can to help everyone understand the material. I learned more from her than from any other class I've taken so far.
Does not lecture according to syllabus, should be teaching an environmental class not psych. Would not recommend this professor but a nice person.
She is a horrible professor, does not know how to lecture. All she talk about are saving elephants and why we shouldn't use single use water bottles but she brings the exam on everything that she should be lecturing on, you have to read the chapters like 10 times and teach it to yourself. And she is horrible at passing back papers
Her course on conservation psychology changed my life. She is so passionate about the material and her work! The material was so new and unlike anything I have ever learned before at Salem State. I highly recommend taking this course if your looking for something thats outside of the norm. Plus she is always there to help and wants you to succeed!
She lectures about the environment and givers her exams straight out of the text book
All she talks about are elephants and saving the world by not using single use water bottles. She didn't even touch the topic of Adult and Old Age Psych until more than half way through the semester. And when she finally got to topics relevant to the class, she barely skimmed the surface. Yet she expects you to know it all for the exams.
Great Professor the week long course is intensive but you defiantly receive a lot out of it.
Glad I took! Dr. Z? Earnest. Cares deeply about Conservation Psy, knows it well. Info: strong, impactful. Makes you question your lifestyle. Well-rounded class. Discussion, lecture, reading, film.. Info can overwhelm, but Dr. Z understands, wants you to do well, is flexible. I learned a lot, recommend this prof. Be better person having taken.
The lectures are a little all over the place. She uses power points and goes too fast to write anything down, but then says don't worry, we will get the information later. Then she posts the powerpoints right before the test. There is also a lot of reading for notes and reflection assignments, but it is barely connected to class material.
Dr. Z is awesome! She is a very fair grader and is always willing to help. She hands you everything you need to know and has very clear grading criteria. I had her 8 am class and she kept every one of us awake and engaged in the lecture. I definitely recommend Dr. Zeren!
Professor Zeren is a wonderful professor. She gives a lot of work and reading. However, it was a seminar class which involves a lot of work. If you participate and really put effort into the work you will do great. Also, she enjoys when you take time to get to know her and visit her during office hours.
I took Professor Zeren's Conservation Psychology course and it was one of the greatest learning experiences of my academic career. It was a true 500 level course but so worth it. Homework consisted of note taking and film review. This class really makes you think about the role we have as humans in this world and it truly changed my life. TAKE IT!
I took her Old Age and Aging class and most of our conversations had nothing to do with it. We watched a couple of films on eating healthy and how meat will kill us. We were also assigned a very opinionated book on the same topic. We didn't discuss anything about psychology or the topic of our class! Just nutrition. Not clear on homework either!!!
I took professor Zeren for adulthood and old age. Most of the classes were just her talking about veganism and how meat will kill you. Also watched a few videos on animals being slaughtered and had to buy a book on the dangers of meat. Most of the topics covered had no clear correlation to the course. Also very unclear lectures and homework.
I found Dr. Zeren to be quite disrespectful to student opinions if they didn't follow her own. Also, she used the class as a platform to talk about her beliefs on veganism and environmental issues. Most of what we covered had nothing to do with psychology at all. Would not recommend taking her.
Dr. Zeren has gotten a lot of heat here. Yes, she assigns a lot of reading, and yes, sometimes her topics aren't completely relevant to psychology, but if you sit down and talk to her you'll realize that she's a really cool lady and you can learn a lot from her classes.
WORST professor I have EVER taken. She is rude and doesn't care about helping students. Flies through power points and always seems confused about what she is talking about. Only take her if you want to leave more confused than you were going in.
I had Dr. Zeren for Adulthood and Old Age, and this is the first professor in my college career to bring up the Veganism movement, and how animal cruelty greatly influences our environment and our health. She is a very smart woman and I thank her for adding this into the course, as this is important to the topic of aging/ consequences of health.
This professor talks about veganism throughout the whole semester. She is unprepared for class and does not know how to use any form of technology, if technology is an issue a lecture would suffice. In this case a lecture would not suffice because she is unable to clearly deliver information to the class. Students leave class more confused.
Worse professor I have ever had a class with. Opinionated and rude towards anyone who doesn't agree with her views. Gives assignments with lack of resources and unclear directions. She does not know how to use her computer so she does not respond to emails in a timely manner. Scatter brained does not explain the situation to say the least.
I loved the course material, she was just the wrong person to teach it. She acts like everything will be ok youll be fine, youll do fine when in reality you dont. Ive tired on homework & assignments but each time I do my best my grade doesnt reflect. This makes me wish I never tired in the first place. Shes smart just cant teach.
had the pleasure of. Wing in Professor Zeren's class about 20+ years ago at Salem State. I found the class to be extremely well organized and very informative. Professor Zeren expects serious effort but is very approachable if you have questions and is very personable
Very sweet and caring! ALOT of reading and homework assignments so be prepared for a bundle load of reading. Wants her students to do well but crams assignments in.
Out of all my classes I have taken in my college career, none has impacted me the way Professor Zeren has. Her class on environmental sustainability was the most relevant to real life class I have ever experienced. She explains the importance of climate change while making it interesting. Her class was as close to life changing as a course can be.
I took this class last semester at 8am and professor Zeren kept me awake the whole time!! Lectures are very interesting and make you want to interact. She shows education videos on a wide range of environmental issues. I had a really busy schedule and prof Zeren put in extra time out of class to make sure I was successful !!
Dr. Zeren Is a great teacher that really cares about conservation. Its hard as a student not to walk away and feel the same. Her classes and assignments are clear and organized. Her expectations are to the point and she is always accessible for any questions. Participation in class seems to be much appreciated
Her Canvas is all over the place. Will assign homework the night before its due without any notice. Does not do a good job telling you what is required and what is extra credit. Did learn in her class but like her Canvas she can be all over the place.
Dr. Zeren is very knowledgeable and enjoys teaching. You can tell she really enjoys this topic especially since it seems dear to her. There's a big project at the end of the semester about keystone species. It is reading heavy but don't let that stray you away. The class is really worth taking if you care about the environment in any capacity.
Take her class for adulthood and old age, it was any easy A. all you have to do are some notes, online quizzes, & an in class final. No papers. Other than a short 1-2 page interview. She also raises your grade by half a letter grade if you attend every lecture.
Do not take Andrea Zeren. You will regret it. Extremely rude at times and I don't even think she realizes it. Very tough grader and will give you a 0 if you don't follow her format exactly. Assignments are so tedious. Class should be ran way differently
Do not take her. She has a bit of an attitude and always gives a hard time grading assignments. She relies heavily on turnitin and will give you a zero if it doesnt meet her format. If the work isnt to her standards dont expect to pass. She doesnt give much help to fix mistakes either so youre on your own.
Professor Zeren wants the assignments done a specific way, must attend lectures in order to receive credit and you will need to participate. Work load can get rough as things didn't have the correct due date
Having her made me realize she is way to strict when it comes to grading. It was her 1st time running Clinical when people tried to tell her we were overwhelmed by the papers (single spaced always 5 to 6 pages) she lectured. HER NOTES ARE UNNECESSARILY LONG & SHE DOESN'T GET THAT! Made me cry and told me I wasn't making grad school. DON'T TAKE HER!
Dr Z is very knowledgeable and passionate about the material she teaches. You will do quite a bit of reading, but it will reward you both in and out of the classroom. She appreciates participation and creative input in discussions and written assignments. Take advantage of her office hours, talking with her 1:1 was very insightful and informative
Professor Zeren was an awesome professor. As long as you follow her directions and do the work you will pass the class. Besides passing the class,I learned a lot of interesting things. Also love her humor. She cares for her students and considers their feedback. One of my favorite teachers I have had so far in college!! Thanks Prof Z :)
This Professor was extremely unorganized. The textbook was wonderful and the material was interesting, however, the Professor was not the best. Her directions were always unclear with lots of typos and she was hard to understand. She also never let us see our grades. Would not recommend this Professor.
Professor Zeren was always willing to help and I took two of her classes. I was graded fairly and homework was fair and not too much. If youre willing to show up and participate you will do well in her class. professor Zeren is understanding and is willing to work with students if theyre willing to communicate their needs.
Dr. Zeren is a phenomenal professor. I found her to be engaging with a practical approach to education. She has a wonderful sense of humor and is fair in all aspects of grading. I still use her tips from child psych when raising my own children.
Professor Zeren's lectures and the movies she showed were always amazing and inspiring. I learned SO much about sustainability and it was truly eye-opening. It is very heavy on the reading and you do have to take a ton of notes but that is what helped me retain the information. Take this course!!
Dr Zeren has to be one of the best college professors I have had the pleasure of learning from. Dr Zeren is engaging in their lectures, open-minded in discussions, and transparent with grading. The class itself was perspective-changing and helped me grow as a person. I recommend this class to those who want to learn about conservation psychology.
Dear Student, If you listen to any review, please let it be this one. I have been on the honor roll my entire life, and for the first time ever, I am getting a very low grade because of Zeren. Please know that if there are formatting issues on a paper, or if you miss a class, she will fail you. She will also never answer emails.
This was an excellent course, and Professor Zeren passionately conveys the content. Her teaching style helped me come away from this course with a substantial amount of important knowledge. She is also extremely helpful and understanding. I recommend this course to any student who is enthusiastic about the environment.
Dr. Zeren is the best prof I've ever had. She's so caring and passionate, her lectures are informative and moving, and she's constantly asking for feedback and student opinions so she can improve. My time at SSU has been made significantly better because of her. Highly, highly recommend!
This course was so eye opening and truly so important! The course was at times super sad, but the information we learned about makes you look at the world so differently. I recommend this class to anyone who may not know a lot about the environment and sustainability. Lots of interesting films and articles to read
Professor Zeren is awesome at what she does! If you want to learn something new and interesting definitely take her class. She does give a lot of work but she is always willing to help and lets you resubmit assignments.
Very intelligent and dedicated to teaching. I only wish that we had additional class meetings during my semester (1 class per week). The speakers she invites are great resources. My only notes, I would prefer a project or paper to a final since the time to review textbook material in class was limited. Textbook $80 new (get a used or digital copy)
She is strict on her guidelines for the assignments. She sometimes didn't communicate effectively through email (if you were trying to reach her outside of class). She is knowledgeable and the class was interesting. But, I didn't like that she talked about environmental stuff for like half the semester.
Professor Zeren's grading guidelines and communication style just didn't fit my learning style. This is just a factor of my own personality and experience which may not be the same for others. She is passionate about certain topics like nutrition and environmental issues
She's such a good teacher. She listen to you and is very understanding. Dr. Zeren has provided great support to me even now after graduating from ssu.
She doesn't take late work and made that clear, she drops lowest grade, and accommodates if you reach out. If you don't like her style it's because you probably don't take college seriously. The work is pretty clear and easy once you get into the groove. Have taken more than one with her and she cares a lot and knows her stuff, would take again.
Dr. Zeren is great! She can be intimidating at first, but if you get to know her or show you care about the class, she is happy to help with whatever you need. She is kind, understanding and very funny. Assignments open and lock quickly, so check Canvas often. She absolutely does not tolerate any phone use during class, and attendance is important.
she's a great conversationalist but often gets off topic. the format she wants for notes isn't actually taking notes- it's hard to explain but if you take her you'll understand what i mean. the material was very interesting but i often didn't learn anything in the actual class. it was fine, because i did enjoy the discussions
I like Prof. Zeren. The workload is light, and she is looking out for every student's best interest. However, I wish she'd lessen her political biases. I don't think school and politics should mix, and if they have to, do so where it is inviting to have an opposing view. Sometimes she can be insulting towards men and talks as if they're less than.
