This was the easiest Chemistry class that I have ever taken. If you go to class an A is not a problem at all. He is actually pretty humorous too.
dude is crazy, hilarious to watch in action, too smart for his own good. great moustache though
Wow. He is hilarious, but I don't think he's trying to be. I studied the night before tests and pulled out a B. The class is worth it just to watch him and his extra long mustache.
he can be a real ass and wears the same exact shirt to class everyday, to me he looks like a walruss
As long as you do the homework problems that he assigns, you will do well on the test. He's hilarious in class and a really nice guy. He's very excited about what he does!
He is a really fun teacher and makes the class smile. If you have taken chemistry in the past you will do fine. I would definately suggest doing the homework or at least understanding the majority of it.
A very good and dedicated teacher. Anyone who wants to get a true understanding of Chemistry should be in his class.WAR EAGLE!!!!
he's so funny that he makes it worth going to class
Great Teacher, very funny. You have to work, but if you know the book you will be fun. He has a mustache that covers his entire mouth.
So hillarious... puts alot of thought into teaching and really tries to reach out ot students who don't care about science.... like most who sign up for concepts. The class isn't too easy but definetly not painful. His class is fun to go and just watch
He's pretty cool. He does demos and stuff that he likes to test you on. On his test all the little things count.
This dude is funny. If he were younger, he would be a ****. Does cool demos. Tests are a challege but fair, tells you all the topics the class period before.
really goofy, but knows his stuff. great teacher and tests are not hard as long as you study some. would recommend having chemistry before this. great man.
Great guy who wants his students to succeed unlike many professors. Definitely a good choice because he is very set on trying to make you understand the harder stuff. Go to class and stay awake!! If u sleep in there only u r 2 blame 4 an F! WAR EAGLE!!
do the homework and you will be ok..he doesn't really teach the material. you have to learn most of it yourself
it's impossible to stay awake in there. he is so boring, he has his moments where he is funny but all in all boring. you don't have to go to calss at all you can just read the book and make straight a's. everything he tests on comes straight from the book
Great teacher. Really knows his material. Can be boring at times. Tests come straight from the homework. He's about as easy as they come.

Great Teacher! Readily available when you need assistance. Tests are from the Homework. Final is from old tests. Great professor, easy to listen to. Definatly take Dr. Illies
This class is a joke..IF YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I did pretty much every problem he assigned and worked the examples in the book and had a 97 average. It is time consuming though.
Chemistry is hard in itself.. but Dr. Illies knows his stuff.. and is fun to look at *his mustache cracks me up*... he is soo nice.. and wants you to do well.. Go to class though.. he gets anal bout not going.. and takes role a lot.... But good guy
Great goofy guy hard class and boring just because its chemistry but he is entertaing. Heard the easiest at AU.
Dr. Illies is great. His tests are not that hard- just study. His notes are from the book so you could just read the book and be fine. Go to class- even though it's boring- because he likes to see you in class.
very boring and not helpful at all.
The easiest chem teacher at auburn. I never went to class. Get the old tests and its a breeze.
Ok heres the deal ...Get the old tests...this guy uses the same questions just changes the the numbers around. Going to class doesnt really help .. You need to spend time studying though.Do the homework &study the old tests
He is a funny guy to watch because his mustache covers his mouth. The class was extremely easy. I didn't study a whole lot and still made an A. Gives extra credit on tests and changes grading scheme to help people pass. Also brings cool experiments into the classroom.
Great teacher, great class, learned a lot!
One of the greatest professors I have ever had. He made chemistry very interesting and enjoyable. A very nice guy too.
I thought I hated Chemistry, until I had Illies. He knows his stuff and how to relay it to you and he makes it entertaining. He's very funny. If you have to take Chem take him.
I made a B in Chem 1030 and had to drop this class because his tests were impossible!!! He is a fun guy but when it comes test time just get ready...I studied for like a week or longer and still failed.
everyone says that he is an easy teacher...maybe to them...he was very unhelpful and scatterbrained. i wish i had taken someone else...you have to study alot...good luck
awful, awful teacher! do not take this guy.
what he teaches is DEFINITELY NOT on the exams. he gives absolutely NO extra credit and tries to be tricky on tests. If you can avoid him, try to. He's a really great man, but a really hard professor.
My advice to everyone is to disregard all of the earlier posts about how great this guy is. They are very misleading. He is nice in class, but he refuses to help you with old material. This is extremely frustrating because the concepts build upon one another.
I made an A in 1030 and struggled for a C in this class. Lectures are boring and redundant, and tests were hard. I do not recommend him at all!
He is the most unhelpful professor I have had. Don't even bother going to his office hours because he will not help you. Oh and if you heard he helps you out at the end with your grade...that's not true!!
I didnt do bad in this class, but it was the first "B" that i have made at Auburn. He doesnt scale much at all, and bonus points? he gave us 5 total out of all 4 tests. not very helpful! I heard he scales, but i kept up with my grades and had an 88 avg. and he did not give me an A. Oh yeah, he doesnt even give u time to take notes in class either..

I had a hard time in chem I, but I thought this class was easier. He really explained the concepts & how to do the problems. He tells you what questions to expect on tests, & puts the formulas on the tests. But, he doesnt give much bonus.
He is horrible. He will not help you out at all. The tests weren't too bad, BUT the final was insane. It was so hard and so different from the tests. Just realize that you are going to have to start studying for the final way in andvance. I ended up with a B and if you invest a LOT of time an A is possible.
His tests are not very hard but he will****you on the final. I spent hours studying and was still lost. I came out with a C even though I totally bombed the first test. Just try to get A's on two of the tests.
Extremely boring and annoying; very unclear sometimes. will put you to sleep in class with his powerpoint presentations.
This man is so funny. I love him to death. I failed the class the first time I took it with another teacher, and have a B in his class! From what I have heard, this man is your best bet for concepts!
Boring, but he does offer help during office hours. You HAVE to pay attention and study hard. But all in all he's not a bad teacher, it's just a hard course.
This guy sucks. If you go to his office he will just try to get you to leave. He does not care about his students and his tests are ridiculous. The final is a MOTHER ****ER!
kind of off the wall hippie type, but easy to understand, IF YOU GO TO CLASS. He gives you test questions on low attendance days.
SHHH! This is some serious ****! The best line of the whole class this summer! Overall he is an okay teacher. Study the notes! The book is too detailed. The lab really helps your grade! So go every meeting! I ended up with a C. Not what I wanted to make but at least I can get on with life. Work hard and you'll do well.
The NICEST guy if you go to office hours (obsessed with environment stuff)! Lectures had nothing to do with tests... class is really hard, but he is very helpful!! I would take Bailey if you want an easy A!
i remember asking 5 people what they got on the first test and they had all failed. barely scraped a c in this class, my first c ever in auburn. do yourself a favor and get someone else, because this guy does nothing to help you. he holds study session once every blue moon which does nothing because compare to the test, the examples are too easy.
Very straightforward. The tests are not too difficult (remember, this is Chemistry II, not bowling!). He is VERY helpful if you go to his office and talk to him... plus he is just hysterical in class at times. I highly reccommend, plus I hear he has a good SI instructor for the Spring '05 semester, so that could help too.
terrible teacher...i got absolutely nothing out of his lectures and they were NOT helpful for his tests...i thought he was very scatter-brained...he did cut my class a deal for the final b/c at least half the class failed the first 2 tests
illies is by far my favorite teacher i have had so far at auburn. this guy knows his stuff and he is hilarious. tests arent too bad, i had no clue how to do some of the stuff on one test and still got a B.
He makes the material seem so childishly simplistic during lecture but then come his tests and they are horrible! No one ever finishes his exams early and since he doesn't curve at all it's very easy for him to screw you over.
This man is evil! Run away while you still have the chance!
He is the worst professor that I've ever had. There's never enough time to finish his tests and half the time he screws up what he's trying to explain in class.
This isnt PE 1500, this is a hard class. Good guy, tests arent that bad. go to class and look at the notes
Worst teacher I've had at Auburn. This man doesn't care a/b his students, he actually told me to leave during office hours when i had a questions. He makes the class seem easy, but then throws you off with tricky tests. Avoid him at all costs.
I found his class to be enjoyable. He can be quite a character in class. Tests aren't easy. You have to know what's going on. But I think he does the best he can to make the material as understandable as possible.
Quit whining. This is chemistry not bowling. Get copies of old tests and you'll ace them all like I did. You still have to work a little though. Gotta love the lectures. "Allllriiiiight."
Great teacher. Funny in class. Class is no problem with old tests.
I don't know what the hell you idiots are talking about. This guy couldn't teach worth a crap. He digresses, makes fake promises, and does like one or two problems in a 50 minute class. Yes, he's a big goofball in class, but you can go to class for entertainment and go home to really teach yourself. How well you do is how well you teach youself
Explains the material very well and makes it clear what should be expected on the tests. He's kind of a hippy, and obsessed with environmental stuff, but he knows his chemistry and conveys it well. If you study, his tests aren't too difficult, and the final is very reasonable. Not an easy A, but I would highly recommend him for serious students...
Dr. Illies is a strange man; he's very scatterminded. His tests are pretty hard; you have to work it out. He gives very little bonus. He does calculations on the board, which is good, but when he goes through PowerPoint, he rushes through it, not allowing you to copy anything down. He will help you if you go to his office hours.
Can't teach, doesn't help, and final was random. I'd reccomend taking someone else. strange fellow
My god is this man useless. He can't even stay on the topic. He doesn't do enough problems and can't explain. He's just a goofball to just laugh at. I did the homework problems and basically taught myself. If you want to learn, take Bailey, because I regret not taking her. Loser needs to retire or something.
NOT an easy class but NOT a hard class. Illies is the strangest professor I have had yet and is much like a hippie. He does problems on the board and tries to prepare you for some things on the test but for the most part you are left studying the book and what you could scribble down as he went through his power point at 90mph. OK professor.
"Allllriiiiight." Illies was a trip. He was very funny in class and tried to explain the material as best as he could. His tests were hard but they were doable if you did the problems and studied. He is a good teacher, it's just a hard subject. Final was not that bad.
You'll have to work to get a good grade in the class. He's an interesting character, and he does know his stuff. He's not a bad teacher, but you'll have to take the stuff taught in class and work with it on your own-it's virtually impossible to cram the night before the test and make an A. I came out with a B, but I could've worked harder for the A
Easy a, hes an awesome teacher and really gets into what he is talking about, tests arnt hard at all if you study...
GET OLD TESTS. I didn't go to class because it's pointless. He teaches chemistry with power point presentations. The book was really helpful. Ended up with a B.

Great teacher, explains things very well. Tests are difficult, but no problem at all if you have the old tests.
I do not recommend Illies for Concepts of Science. He teaches straight from the book, almost word for word-the pictures on his slides are straight from the book as well. His tests are not easy-most questions are not even material he went over. This class can be very easy with another professor!!! I got a C and attended class every day!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CONCEPTS! He teaches from a power point and frequently mumbles about Bush and war spending. in one of his sections of concepts only 15 people will be passing. I hear he will be on probation come fall of 2007

Illies definately smokes something, maybe he hides it under his moustache. For being a class that overviews science as a whole, it is too difficult. His tests are pretty difficult but if you study really hard and go over both the slides & the book you should do okay. Go to class & recitation & do the assignments, it helps your grade in the end.
I went to class everyday with the slides printed out and just took extra notes on those which really helped. Please don't buy the book. Lab is very important. The tests are ridiculous so just be prepared for anything. But really study the slides and attempt to go to class. I went everyday and luckily got an A.
He's not particularly hard, but there are only 2 tests and the final, so one bad test can screw you over. That's what happened to me. I ended up with a B in the class because I made a 65 on the first test. But, I studied my tail off for the second test and final and did okay on them, so an A is definitely manageable.
Not a good teacher if you ask me. Talks about things in class that are not at all helpful. Very confusing. Only 2 tests and the final, so screw up 1 test and you could be in trouble. Would not recommend
his class wasn't easy but it is manageable. i came out with A i studied hard at least three days before the exams. The bad thing is that he only has two tests and final. however, his tests are not that hard. if you know the stuff you will be fine. funny teacher

He is not so bad for Concepts of Science. He is awful for Chemistry. he is a totally different guy. He is funny and carefree. Stickler for attendance--come to class or fail!! Study the slides and memorize for the tests!! Not a bad class if you study the slides really hard.

I studied my butt off for the tests and it paid off and all that mess. But it could be just because I believe he scaled like anything. I don't know. Not a class to be neglected.
He is really random in class and gets off the subject a bit. He also only has 2 tests and a final so not a lot of room for error. But he scales big time. My friend got a D on both tests and freaked on the final and left half blank and she got a C. I probably should have gotten a B but I got an A.
Just took the final this morning and it was absolutely ridiculous. Avoid him at all costs: only two tests and a final so you can't afford to mess up. He cusses alot in class which makes class pretty interesting; that was our sole motivation for going. Oh yeah, and attendance is required.
omg! this professor needs to retire. He is paid to teach the students, not blabbing about things that have nothing to do with the subject. Tests are ridiculous ESPECIALLY THE FINAL! failed the class. thanks a lot! now i have to transfer schools cause idiots like him teach and blatantly take your money. oh, and btw, he doesn't scale at the end. jerk
Pretty good teacher. Easier class compared to other 1040 Professors. Failed Donnelly and then took Illies and he was wayy easier. 2 tests and the final. 10% of your grade is attendance, so it helps to go to class but not mandatory. I gave my clicker to a firend and just did all the homework questions for tests and did fine. Very nice guy.
He is one of the best 1040 teachers at AU. I had to drop Blumenthal's class, and Illies was a breeze compared to him. Do all of the homework problems and you'll be fine. The final was kinda tough, a lot more new material than he said would be on it. Attendance is mandatory, but he gives you 3 free days to miss, which isn't bad. Pretty funny guy too
hey kids, do you like chemistry? do you want to pass chemistry?? then dont take this guy... 2 tests and a final are you grade in the class. did i fail? you bet... be ready to do ridiculous problems from the book, not pay attention in class since it wont mean anything on the test... passable? if you're ready to spend weekends dedicated just to chem
Great teacher! He simplified all of the concepts so that everyone could understand. His tests were extremely fair. If you do the homework, you do well on the exams. And he's a nice guy as well, which always helps.
Overall, pretty easy teacher. 2 tests, a final, and attendance is 10% of your grade so go to class! It really helps. Tests are very fair and very easy if you understand the homework, which is also pretty easy. I would definintely take him again if I had to take another Chem class.
Illies is a great teacher. His tests are very fair but you need to study to make the grade. He will help you in office hours.
Illies is a great teacher. There are only 2 test and a final which is very intimidating, but its not that bad. He is really nice and helpful and honestly wants his students to learn. Take him if you can
His class was really hard, but feasible. What I hated the most about his class was that he rambled on about the stupidest things, and hurry though the important stuff. He doesn't post his notes on blackboard and he thinks he hears noises when there are none. Also he uses clickers to check attendance. I passed his class but I'm glad it's over!
He honestly wants all students to do well, and he'll call you out if you continuously disrupt class. He was very animated and he held my focus easily. If you know the problems he does in class backwards and forewards, you'll do great on the tests. Final was alot like the other tests. Go to class. Definitely take Illies if you can for any subject.
TERRIBLE! Avoid at all costs! He's only teaching because it's an obligation and it shows!
