He has a fun accent, and this is definitely a class for non-astronomy majors. He goes very slow and his voice might lull you to sleep. He gets a little frustrated if asked to explain things over and over, but the midterms are easy and he is an extremely lenient grader on labs and homework. Teaches straight from the book, so class is optional.
This class started out very easy and then got harder, tests are fairly easy if you know the material. Gets frustrated when asked the same thing over and over again in class. Grades very easy on homework and labs. Class has two tests and a final. He has a fun accent. Lectures are quite boring and make me want to fall asleep.
sounds just like ARNOLD!!! grades easy, and the only reason he got a little frusterated was because the class was dumb and couldn't get the picture. awesome teacher and tests are easy if you know what's goin on.
Class easily skippable. Go over the examples and the easy representative problems in the book for his tests. You can copy the homework assignments from the solutions manual in the library. He doesn't realize that the avg. student just wants to pass and couldn't care less about Gauss' Law or magnetic fields and as a result he gets discouraged.
The worst class I have ever taken. I'm a non-major, and I would urge anyone else in my position to TAKE GEOLOGY. It's a great class for the GUR, where you learn a lot without stressing over the possibility of FAILING a 100-level class!
If your Physics is not good, he will Terminate you. Good enough guy but not always clear. Tests are not tricky, but not easy. He has really lost a lot of muscle mass since the Conan movies.
This prof drives me insane. We covered a lot of the same topics as Chem 122, but he was HORRIBLE at explaining them. If I hadn't been in both classes at once, I just would not have understood some of the topics. I hate this class.
I understand physics and math and I'm still getting a horrible grade. Tests take longer than the class period and he doesn't give examples that are anything like the problems on the test.
Fun teacher, great to be around. Just pay attention, same goes for everything in college!
ok I understand that he is german. but he needs to have some one else proof reed his tests they oftain contain questions that are confusing or use badd grammer. cool guy but if you complain hard enough he crumbless and folds to the class. i think its a new teacher thing. cool guy, bad teacher
I had a good time in his class b/c he has a GREAT sense of humor and a fun accent. If you want to do well in his class, you gotta READ THE BOOK and go to lectures (though they may seem pointless at times). He grades easy on the homework. Office hours were helpful too. ah yes, the grammar thing, he does need to work on that.
Arnold is a frustrating teacher. Pretty nice guy and ok governor, but not a great teacher. His review for the final was good, but that was too little too late. Especially since he did not curve any tests-FN' nihilist.
good lecture pace, very helpful when you go to his office, exams not too hard when you do your homework by yourself
Outstanding Physics Prof! Great sense of teaching.
Let me just put it this way: Much of the class probably has a C or D right now and we are only through the second midterm. Quizzes and homework aren't too difficult...but the exams sting. He seems to be a nice guy but his helpfulness with giving more practice problems (that aren't just conceptual) sucks. I hope to get a B...but that's pushing it.
I had been putting off taking Physics 114 for over four years, and finally had to take it. He was wonderful- he helped me to conquer my fear of the class and made it really interesting. He used in-class demonstrations to make things more interesting. He's great!
He's always available for help outside of class. The guy is hilarious! I wouldn't take Physics from another prof. Yes, his tests are hard but he's learning to accomodate the class better. He wants people to do well. From what I've heard he's one of the only decent teachers for the intro physics series.
Great Physiscs prof. Teaches understanding of concepts and ideas, as opposed to making you memorize several equations and just deriving equations on the board the whole time. Sense of humor, fun accent. Would take another class from him again. Great teaching style, recommended!
Lacks English vocabulary and stumbles on words a lot. If it wasn't for my physics 101 experience last year I would have done horribly in his class. Quizzes are on same day as hw is due and he doesn't go over the hw thoroughly before/after he assigns it. Take a different prof!!
hard to follow during lecture/exam were fair.
Completely unaccessable. If you need help he does a disappearing act. He acts as if every student in his class is a science major. If you must take astronomy, DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!
He's not a bad teacher, but you have to be willing to work independently and use your text book for reference if you don't understand something. Quizzes and tests are based directly on the homework (which is minimal, but be prepared to flex your understanding of concepts for the tests.
Andreas is such a cool guy! He always wears stuff from like pac sun. its funny. The homework is harder than the lecture, but it's only two questions and there's like one hw assignment maybe every week. There's always a quiz on the day you turn in hw but its SO EASY. its ridiculous. this is a HELLA EASY GUR. TAKE IT! Labs aren't bad either!
Hes very passive...and funny
Worst professor I've ever had! I have had plenty of math, understand all my geometry, and was SO excited to have this class to tie it together with some applications. Teacher has no comprehension of student understanding level, and outright mocks people, treats them like garbage. RUN THE OTHER WAY - FAST!
Fantastic teacher! passionate and funny. he tends to poke fun at people but only when they deserve it.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had! I wanted to major in physics but after taking this course it was not fun anymore, I would not recommend taking physics with him.
At first I thought his laid back approach was cool. Then I realized it was sort of sink or swim and if you weren't getting it there was no hope for you. I got the physical examples but needed to be able to put it on paper. His office hours are in the tutoring center which aren't helpful.
Those who write negative reviews are, to be frank, idiots. He is a funny guy who knows what he is doing. If you struggle in his class, you probably aren't coming to class or paying attention. Nevertheless, you can get help! If you ask intelligent questions, he will intelligently answer them. He does poke light fun at dumb questions, dont be offended
Seems great and explains stuff well in class. Until he starts insulting the class and individual people for not understanding something. Be ready to get put on the spot in class and insulted if you don't know the answers. If you go in to his office hours he won't help you either. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM EVER.
Very good, but haard professor. His assignments will kick you in the butt if you don't go to his office hours or the help center. Funny guy and he knows what he is doing.. Makes class fun and entertaining, just he does not do too many examples of problems in class.
This professor is so awesome! He made class fun and pretty funny too. Also, he was a hottie, in the nerdy way :)
You should take a class from this man. He's hilarious. Just do the work and go to his office hours if you need clarification.
His lectures are sort of drolling, and he uses very little examples to help us remember. His accent made the lectures a bit difficult to understand sometimes, but the work itself was never too difficult. Just expect to get most of your info from the text book. He also gives daily quizzes so you cant skip a single day.
LOVED him. He's funny, I love his accent, and he has great explanations. His tests aren't too difficult and reflect the class topics/discussions completely. I'll definitely take a physics class from him if I can.
I loved this professor! Everyone says its hard, but its actually pretty easy. His tests cover things that are either talked about in class or are on the homework, and a lot of the questions on the tests are straight from the homework. His tests are only 12% of your grade each, while participation is 20%. Best class thus far.
ABSOLUTELY GREAT for a 101 student with no previous exposure to physics whatsoever! He is extremely helpful nice. If you ask him a question he really tries to make sure you get it before you walk away. His tests are great, no surprises, just don't run out of time.Everyday attendance is absolutely necessary or you will be lost without notes. Funny too!
He uses humor in his lectures which keeps everyone interested. Also he doesnt use very many powerpoint presentations which was helpful to me, he wrote everything out on the board
Other than the German accent, he was easily one of my favorite professor.
Riemann was super cool and really funny! Sit in the front rows of class or else you wont understand what he's saying. Also you need to go to class or you'll get pretty behind, hense my C+.
I have taken both his Phys 101 and Astr 103 classes and I can say that he is a great teacher. He has a good sense of humor and is always good with answering questions. He makes class enjoyable.
It's like being taught by a loving father. He is the best science teacher I've ever had and I am NOT a science person. He is very understanding and if you go to him then he will help you. I took math last semester and nearly failed but managed to get an A in his class. I highly recommend him!
Interesting class. No textbook, so attendance is helpful. He does post lecture notes online, which is great. Labs were a little irritating but beyond his control. Midterms were fairly easy, final was much more difficult. Probably one of the better classes for a LSCI GUR. Overall good professor.
I decided to take the last physics course for the calculus based physics series over the summer. Horrible idea. The pace of the class was insane and we had TWO labs every week which were behind the lecture material (meaning they weren't useful as a learning tool by then). Riemann is the only reason I enjoyed this class.
Riemann saved me due to an unforseen incident during finals week. I truly appreciated his teaching methods and the enthusiasm behind his lectures. He is able to sympathize with his students and provide feedback on what you can do to improve your own understanding. You have to put in the effort too, though. Worth.
Riemann was easily one of the best profs I had. He made the subject to actually be pretty interesting. His sarcastic humor helped get through some monotonous material. He is probably the fairest prof in regards to fairness on exams, they're still tough though. Easily would take him again.
Riemann is engaging and hilarious. Not only does use class time efficiently and informatively, but he does so while sprinkling in jokes to keep the subject entertaining. He knows how to explain big concepts piece by piece and does so in a way that keeps you along with him, not half-asleep. Great lecturer: wish I could take him again.
While Riemann is a nice professor he doesn't prepare his students well for the tests. He expects you to memorize equations from a different class where you were not required to memorize them anyways. He doesn't provide ways of reviewing class material and so that also makes the tests hard to study for.
Lectures were entertaining and interesting. As long as you read and do your homework you should be fine; tests are clear cut. One of my favorite professors at Western so far.
This was the best physics professor i have ever had is lectures are amazingly fun and his test are fair and actually match the material covered in class. Also if using Webassign there is an eBook that comes free with the subscription so you do not need a hardcopy. Highly recommend him as a professor
Clear and concise in his presentation. The tests are reasonably difficult, but if you study you should do well. He doesn't allow you to use calculators, but sets up the problems such that this isn't an issue. I am a biochemistry major, no idea why this wasn't in the drop down list. That's irritating! Take Riemann, he's awesome!
Professor Reimann is really nice but unless you spend 2 weeks studying non stop for the exams you probably won't do well. He assigns a lot of homework which is mostly conceptually based and there is never feedback, not even on exams. That being said he does know what he is teaching and if you meet with him to discuss the topic then it will help you
Pros: Amazing lecturer, would often crack a few jokes and make the information easier to absorb. Very helpful in office hours. Group problems were great. Gave us the tools to succeed. Very organized. Cons: Test style changed every time. Tough but fair on grading, you had to work for it (minimal partial credit).
He is a great professor. He really tries to make the lectures fun. He's very helpful, and good at explaining the material. This is one of my favorite classes!
Dr. Riemann is very funny, and an excellent lecturer. If you make the effort to participate and communicate with hi, he is very understanding. I got sick and missed my lab and he excused it without needing a note because I let him know beforehand. His tests never have surprising material. He is very german. 10/10
Riemann was great. He has a bit of an accent, but it shouldn't hinder any understanding. He is genuinely excited about the physics and explains the subject well. His score on here seems a bit low.
Andreas is really nice. He has a thick German accent, but he speaks great English. His class had plenty of homework on top of labs (Mastering Physics, pencil and paper problems, lab writeups, etc.) so you need to be prepared for the workload. His lectures are okay, but the Mastering Physics homework is way harder. Great guy, but assigns work a lot.
Not sure why people don't like Riemann, other than amount of HW. He gives amazing lectures, starting with introducing a topic, having people work on problems in groups, which he then leads the class through together. I'll definitely use him as inspiration for my teaching in the future. Lots of HW, but physics requires it I think. Fair difficulty.
Professor Riemann is a stand up guy. Hes kind, funny, and genuinely cares about his students. If you need extra help, he is more than willing to take time out of his day to help. The course in general was pretty hard, but he very kindly drops your lowest test score. Definitely would recommend!
I really enjoy his lecture style, but this class was incredibly difficult and the way it is structured does not leave time for error. It is a very intense class, with midterms every other week. If you are not ready to work do not take this class.
He is fun and makes class engaging. His teaching style wasn't what I needed so I struggled more with the material and lectures. You definitely have to put in the work for this class, but communicate with him and attend office hours! He's approachable and doesn't make you feel dumb.
If you have to take physics, Riemann is the best possible option. I, like most people, despise physics and it can be challenging to grasp, but he really helps you understand everything. His office hours are so helpful. The lectures give great examples and the tests are very straightforward. I think it says a lot if I managed to get a B. Take him!
He is very funny but can also be blunt when people ask a question. 163 was more difficult than the previous physics classes with him. If you want to do well it requires a ton of studying, like your whole weekend plus nightly. Homework is hard and there are in class group problems. The classes were very entertaining, but the workload was intense.
He had lots of in class worksheets which usually I would not like, however, they ended up being very helpful study materials for exams.
I took this course to cover a GUR and I really enjoyed it. Professor Riemann is a funny guy and I found his lectures interesting. You need to go to class because your grade is based off a lot of participation assignments, but they're not difficult to do. I recommend this course and professor.
Very fun teacher, great lectures with tough homework that always prepares for the tests well
Andreas is very funny and very caring. He has us do group problems in class and exercises to make sure we understand the problem. And he makes physics much clearer than any professor I've had before. Make sure to go to his office hours if possible because the course required online homework can get kind of ridiculously difficult.
Very funny, smart, and involved prof. Most confusing course in 160 series imo, but he made it digestible. I felt like he cared about us as individuals and built a rapport with us, and he even got us donuts at the end of the quarter! Reasonable hw due before exams and in class assignments. Hard as summer course because 4 weeks isn't enough time.
He's a really funny and enjoyable prof to take, but sometimes can go over complicated stuff too fast during lecture. He's very willing to help during office hours as long as you ask for what you need. Overall good professor and really funny guy
He doesn't teach. He lectures but he doesn't explain what he's doing. He presents an equation like it's common knowledge so when it's time to practice people don't know how to use it. Doesn't fully teach the material to the class and relays heavily on the text book but the book is confusing. Test questions are rarely about material learned in class
Tough homework but it prepares you well for the tests
Professor Riemann was by far the best physics professor I have ever had. He is nice, makes a ton of dad jokes, and is always more than willing to help his students. This was the first time I was excited to learn about physics since I was in high school. He makes his lectures fun and teaches in a way that makes physics easy to learn
Riemann is the silliest physics professor you'll ever take, I highly recommend. Most of the homework was just reading the textbook and then answering homework questions that were due the night before each exam. The labs were super simple, nothing had to be done beforehand. Go to the lectures, you'll have a good time.
Professor Riemann is a hilarious German dude. He's very verbal with his lectures, meaning that he makes his points through speaking, which is not everyone's learning style. For me, it was so easy to just get lulled by his voice and just not pay any attention. Physics is hard y'all.
I don't understand why Andreas's score is so low, he's a hilarious guy who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are always fun and engaging, and while he only holds office hours twice a week, he is always very inviting when you attend them and explains concepts in a 1 on 1 setting very well. Would take again.
Was very personable and funny but would get off topic. Lectures were confusing. He would give us lots of equations without showing how to use. Hard to take good notes. Did very few actual examples in class making the tests extremely hard, often seeing questions for the first time on the test. Never enough time to finish tests. No multiple choice.
Lectures were fun, and I hope to continue the Physics series with this teacher.
Riemann is a very intelligent professor. He can be a bit strict regarding grading, but he will explain how to improve for the next assignment. He also makes class entertaining and engages with his students.
Very engaging and entertaining lectures, enjoyed them a lot. Very clearly explains concepts/strategies. Offers two different grading systems: One based on just exams, other based on exams plus homework. Goes with whichever system gives the student a higher grade at the end of the quarter. Wish I could take every physics with him.
I thought Riemann was a fair grader and gave very entertaining lectures. He is good at engaging the class. I wish WWU in general would drop MasteringPhysics
excellent lecturer, and all around very friendly & funny guy. The faint German accent makes him extra entertaining to listen to, and his lectures were all super useful. The only unpleasant part of the class was the mastering physics (at times), but definitely worth it. He was also very communicative about what would appear on each test. the goat.
Lectures were fun and engaging and silly; easy to pay attention to. Always stops to answer questions, so ask them! Syllabus for 114 drops lowest participation and HW grades :P he's goated. Other students have said he sometimes grades exams in an unfair/confusing way, though. In-class work matters more for exams instead of HW. Mastering phys sux tho
The course is very test-heavy, but the split between the weight of tests is very helpful. He's pretty good at explaining things and cares about everyone's understanding. I took it over the summer so our class got pretty close and he was good at meeting us where we stood.
I love Andreas Riemann so much!! Funniest guy ever, great teacher, and simply an icon. Learned so much and wasn't a super difficult class but requires you to put in effort and pay attention. But its not hard to pay attention because he is so great
Dr. Riemann is a great professor! His lectures are always fun, and he wants students to participate. This class felt easier than any math class I've taken at western. The exam questions are pulled from questions on the in-class worksheets, with only small changes. Study those, and you'll be fine.
