Rusian accents taught english class in US,seems very weird!!I took with him and failed the class,I was worked very hard for the class to pass the state exit exam,but he did not care,did not help!!!I DO NOT RECOMMEND him for Prep Writing!!!!
I took his class for Comm2 and was one of the worst class experiences ever. Not only is he quick to critisize your work and views but he doesn't listen when you bring points up in class (ie if its not his view its wrong or not worth listening to).
Took his class for Comm 1 and I absolutely hated it. In the beginning it wasn't bad, but then all he did was come in late and then never talk about the stuff we were SUPPOSED to be talking about, only his views and his biased opinions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... he is a terrible teacher.
currently have Belyi for Commications 1, and i regret ever signing up to take him as my professor. I normally enjoy English class and writing, but my love for writing was never expressed in this class. I nearly left the class in tears several times after being belittled he harshly disagreeed with
Everything you've heard it's true. He's rude. Twists your words around. Although if you are willing to work for a grade, and like to analyze literature, then this is your class. I am an "A" student, and I wish I never took this class. If you're in his class, get out, get out, get out!

The meanest, most disrespectful teacher I have ever had!! Does nothing but put people down and tell you that your opinion is wrong. I took him for COMM 2 and I withdrew after he met with me after class to help me with a paper and told me off. He accused me of lying and not trying. And I walked out almost in tears. Don't take his class!!
If you are a sensitive person and can not handle constructive criticisim then Mr. Belyi is not the teacher for you!!He can be very opinionated, but you should stand up for what you beleive in. Participate, do the assignments, and its an easy A!!

i did not miss one of his classes and made A's on all my in class writings and essays and worked very hard. He ended up giving me a B because of my research paper which i spent a lot of time on. he tore it apart and was totally direspectful toward me. overall, i regret taking him.
He is a very bad instructer. He doesent even follow lesson plans that he gave out at the begining of the sem. He lost my paper and told me that I had to re do it because he didnt have proof that I even turned it in. All in all DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR

I took Prof. Belyi a few semesters ago.If you are thinking of signing up for his class,DON'T!He was never rude to me,but was to many others in my class. Made a few girls cry,does his best to make a spectacle of people when they are wrong,very discouraging, and flat out MEAN. I don't know how he's managed to keep his job this long. DO NOT TAKE HIM!

This was the hardest class! He kept us so late the janitor was wating for us everynight. He never handed out any evaulations because he gets such bad marks on them. He actually was switched into my class 15 minutes before the first night because no one would sign up for his! AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN
RUN! Do not take Prof. Byle. He is biased and grades his paper not on your ability to write but on your opinions. He makes sure to pick controversial topics, and if he doesn’t agree with your opinion calls it a "lack of critical thinking" and grades you poorly. He should be fired.
I went into this class concerned about the teacher because of the ratings he has on this site, yet I found him to be an awesome teacher. There is good class participation and he appreciates opinions even if he doesn't agree. There are no tests except 1 timed writing. I have gotten an A on everything in this class. DO NOT BE AFRAID! He's nice.
I was a bit nervous taking him because of his rating but he turned out to be a really great professor. Write the papers that he wants and hand them in when he wants and you will be ok. Asks thought provoking questions and actually cares about what you think, take him!!!
yeah, its true. this guy is a total jerk but it was fun arguing against him even if there is no chance in you winning.....he knows his stuff he is just not aware of how rude he is to his students
grades harshly on the essays, but practically tells you what to write. as long as you agree with him, you'll pass. don't disagree with anything he says. he hates that and will grade you poorly. lots of essays and reading. sort of hard to understand sometimes, because of his accent. good, but biased teacher.
If you can suffer through COM 1 immediatley take him for com 2. When I had him again in Com 2 his demeanor changed towards me. His biggest complaint in Com 1 is "Who taught you people?" He will call on you more, but often times agree with you. He'd ask me a question, I wouldn't be listening, and I just start talking. Somehow I always was right.
He has thinks he is always right. Doesn't compromise with students. Makes you write rediculous papers and picks out everyting you did wrong. Takes roll every day and 2 tardies counts as an absence. Only allowed 4 absences, then if you don't withdraw he will fail you. 1500 report due at end of semester.
Very opinionated. Write what you think he will agree with or he will grade you poorly. I got an A on all but one of his assignments because he didn't agree with one of my essays. He almost made me cry while telling me how wrong I was. Did make others cry during class. However, I did learn A LOT. Take the class if you're tough.

he is an unorganized teacher and can be pretty bias. however…his classes were always really interesting, and i did learn alot. he definitely isnt boring and he gets the class in heated discussions. although the class was frustrating sometimes, I always looked forward to the lectures.
He's very unorganized and slightly crazy. Starts talking about one thing and goes off on a tangent and we end up somewhere else. It's somewhat of an easy class but you have to write a lot of papers and a research paper at the end of the semester. I personally would never take another class taught by him.
Late every day. Made appointments with students, then didn't show up. Biased-if you don't share his opinion you get marked down. Very unorganized and slow to grade papers. Some papers were never returned. Students were left wondering where they stood.
Very unorganized, came late to class often, very vague grading. Did not let you know what you needed to improve. Handed back three papers on the day of final so I had no idea where I stood until grades were posted online. Didn't hand back research paper or final results. This teacher is horrible!! he says you should take noted but does not give you time to actually write anything down, he is almost always late to class, and does not like your opinion unless they are in agreement with his.i strongly don't reccomend him!!!
If you have no other choice like i did, listen to what i have to say. Express your opinions vocally learn what he likes and then write based on what you learned. Just do what he says and engage in conversation and you'll get a decent grade. He expects you to talk, and read the assignments everytime. As always sitting in the front isnt a bad idea
His class isn't so bad if you know how to play the game. I got an A on all his papers and tests. If english isn't your subject than I'd suggest taking another prof. Being involved in discussions is important. He may disagree but he likes to hear what his students have to say. I really did learn in his class and enjoyed analyzing the literature.
This professor is not very good at grading papers. His grading makes no sense. I have been involved in English honors classes before Brevard and he gave me B's and C's. I got other professor comments on my papers and they all agreed they were great papers. He grades on a scale 1-10 and you may get a 9 and get a B. Isn't 9/10 90%? Do not take!
Don't take Belyi's class if you are looking for an easy A. He is a hard teacher, but if you participate in class you can learn a lot! He is very intelligent, and expects you to be writing papers and analyzing literature at a college level. He's a great teacher I would take him again for sure.

I had him for my communications 1 summer teacher and I got a B. I think he is a great teacher, but can be difficult. He expects work to be done and for you to do the readings. Also, it good to say your opinions in his class, he enjoys that.
Very thorough professor. He makes class interesting even if you don't like the subject (I didn't). Lots of writing. Tries to scare students in the beginning by saying his class is difficult to weed people out, but it's really not that bad. Got a B. Recommended.

Overall, good teacher. Although he had some rough spots (off on alot of tangents), in the end i feel his class was worth the extra effort. He is strict with "to the book" but that's how it's suppose to be. Recommended for the student who likes a little challenge...

Did not enjoy this class. His grading is just plain odd, or random is the best way to describe it. He's often very forgetful to the point where I got frustrated; he suddenly "remembered" about a timed writing test one day when half the class wasn't even prepared in advance. Decent literature selection, just wish more was covered.
He takes some getting used to but he is a fairly decent professor. He definitely helped me improve my writing skills in this class. If you take the time to meet with him during his office hours and actually follow his advice when writing your papers you should do fine in the class.

Might want to shy away from him for Com 1, but take him for Com 2 if you get the chance. Entertaining; occasional tangents, but most professors are a little off topic from time to time. You will be challenged, and you will learn how to analyze literature. He does, however, respect you if you show up for Com 2 after having him for Com 1.
This is a tough teacher BUT you will learn a ton in this class. Lots of writing and homework but its not hard work, its just busy work. Prof. Belyi grades fairly and is entertaining. Work hard and you will get the grade you want. You NEED the book.

He is, in every sense of the word, terrible. When deciding upon a research topic, not only did he reject my proposal, but he insulted my intelligence and was incredibly rude. He is constantly up on his high horse, and he grades very tough. I got a B in the class, but was so very glad to be out. I do not recommend him, take someone else.

This teacher is very intimidating. You feel obliged to laugh when he cracks a joke, even when it's not funny. You will probably hear about the Chinese labor force several times (it has to do with Iphones). There are many papers due each week. He lectures the whole class period and it's extremely boring. I would not recommend his class.
At first, Prof. Belyi came off as bigoted. But, I've realized as the semester has progressed that, he's a very helpful and an overall good teacher. He's just serious about teaching and expects you to be serious about learning, too. He also follows the syllabus exactly, so it's easy to know what's going on in class. Just do the HW and try.
If you are expecting to get a passing grade handed to you on a silver plate from him then most likely you are in a wrong class. He's a no BS professor. At the end of the semester he will make sure, you have a full knowledge of MLA format. Pay attention, turn in your homework on time,get a head start on your research paper and you'll do fine.

Professor Belyi is hard. He grades fair though. By the end, you will actually know a lot of things. He is clear when he is teaching, but not when it comes to fixing your papers. But again he is a very fair grader, and he doesn't let his opinions get in the way. You have to work hard to get a good grade, but that is what college is made to do.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. He is harsh and makes you feel bad when you make a mistake, rather than trying to help you so you don't make it twice. He was unpleasant and unclear. Don't take his class.
Prof. Beyli is a phenomenal teacher. He is intimidating, often rude, and enjoys getting off topic. Yet, out of all of the English and literature profs. at EFSC, he seems to be the most knowledgeable, easily understood, and fair. By far.
Do NOT take this professor. If you have any other options take them! He constantly belittles you to the point where you want to cry. I turned in a assignment that i worked hard on but he scolded me for having small errors. While another student used a citation generator and he doesn't say a word to him.
Belyi will tear you apart. I can not say I did not learn allot but he can not just simply expect you to know things without explaining them FIRST then tear up your grade.. He does not explain assignments and just assigns them my class average is about 55% and I have an 85 with a TON of hard work. Just stay away from this teacher

After reading the onslaught of assaults on his character, I had to chime in. Prof. Belyi's class was interesting and stimulating. He's passionate about his field and will explain assignments thoroughly. Professor Belyi is a good professor. He may be tough but at least he is reasonable. The way that he teaches is straight forward. People often fail the course because they do not do what is required or they do something stupid like cheating or plagiarizing (He is being nice about it but others would send you to the provost's office for expulsion).

I did not look forward to his class at all. Everyone in class was scared to answer his questions because he made people look foolish. Grammar tests were difficult. I passed with a B because of my essays. He is tough, and he makes you work for your grade.

Class is easy if you just read what he assigns and you do the papers on time with what he wants in them. Teacher is okay. Not very nice, but our class had some laughs with him here and there. Just pay attention to the stories and poetry and don't procrastinate . Everything should be good then.
If you take his class, immediately begin on the 2000 word research paper. He forces you to choose such narrow a topic that it is almost impossible to find descent resources to complete the assignment. Also if you don't reach 2000 words or meat any other of the eight criteria, he wont take your paper which he counts as 20% of your grade.
Do Not Take his class in the summer. Assigns 2,000 word research paper at the end of the semester. In my opinion 2,000 word essay should be assigned at the beginning of the summer semester and it should be due at the end of the semester.
This teacher is the most ruthless teacher that you will enjoy taking. Yes he comes across as a little gruff, but he really wants to push you to think outside the box. If you want an EASY A he's not your teacher, but if you want to challenge yourself and feel like you really earned your grade he is top notch. Dive into the deep end kiddies.
This class is hard and the professor is very negative. If you have no choice than to take him, ADVISE to wait until you can get into another class. First day of class he spoke very negative and will make you feel stupid if you ask questions in class. Also a 2000 word research paper is due at end of term and did not give enough time for paper.
Yes this was class hard, and he is a tough teacher, but this class was VERY INTERESTING! Professor Beyli is very good at teaching his students how to analayze literature and write literary analysis essays. I saw comments that said he was negative but I disagree because the class just makes you think in ways you normally wouldn't.

I was nervous to take his class after I read these reviews but I am about to pass with an A. I have him for comm 2. If you go to class, it's easy to pass. He tells you exactly what he expects, so just do that. The class is just four small papers and then one big paper at the end. Unless you really struggle with English, it's really not bad.
Very tough grader and he will tell you to do an essay one day then change his mind the next. He has no second chances, so if you mess up on an essay then to bad. He has 6 grammar quiz's that you need to study for or you will fail.
Knows his stuff. Doesn't waste time. Gets right into the work. Take him if you know how to read literature between the lines. The kids in my class were C level readers and writers and got those grades because they didn't understand symbolism ect. His sense of humor is there, but it's hard to get a laugh out of him.

I personally really enjoyed his class. It was very interesting for an 8 am comp 2. He is kind of tough but is pretty understandable. Definitely makes you work for the grade and doesn't give out an easy A's. Not too many tests, a few essays, but it's basically just discussions the entire class which he makes interesting and adds a lot of humor.
One of my favorite professors so far! Mr. Belyi is a really good professor in my opinion, pay attention to his lectures and read the stories and you will be fine. He is a fair grader, and very understanding. He can be a bit sarcastic at times but overall a wonderful professor. He makes you work for your grade but you really learn a lot.
Prof. Belyi is hilarious and gives great lectures. When asked for help, he usually sends you off to someone else or gives you some other sources to find answers from. Lots of work, and he's a pretty tough grader, but you can definitely pass with a good grade as long as you dot your I's and cross your T's.

Never in my entire 15+ years of schooling have I met a teacher like prof. belyi (not a complement). I'm a very respectful student, head down taking notes and no talking or disruptive behavior, yet he spoke to me in the most degrading and rude way anytime I asked a question. Belyi is very intimidating. But I respect him and he respects me. He notices who really tries and who doesn't. Gain his respect. Work hard. Participate in class discussions. He is VERY SARCASTIC so he's not for everyone. Study for the grammar tests- they're hard. USE THE WRITING CENTER. I got a 100 on all my papers using the writing center.
Prof. Belyi's class is not very hard; it requires some time to be allotted for writing a few papers, but it is fairly easy. The grammar tests that everyone seems to think are so hard are things that everyone should know by the time they start high school.

So many students just skipped on the easiest assignments, and failed because of it. The papers are easy, assignments are spelled out for you and the research paper is mainly about citing correctly. If you put in the effort you will pass with no problem.

Belyi does give a lot of homework, but if you're decent at writing it is a piece of cake. Just make sure to turn everything in and you're fine. Make sure to get both textbooks because he uses both frequently! Other than that he's super passionate, is open to many topics, and grades fairly but thoroughly.

Mr. Belyi was one of the worst teachers I had at BCC. He is rude, disrespectful, he belittles his students, criticizes your paper negatively in front of the class, and makes you feel stupid. It's either his way or no way. Very biased. Close-minded, does not respect other people's idea. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Prof. Belyi is rude. This class should not be taken by anyone who doesn't have a thick skin. You need to be good at writing and strong with MLA citation. I'm a very strong writer and his super tough grammar tests almost brought me down to a B. He is the only com1 teacher who uses grammar tests. Beware!
Professor Belyi is a nice guy, but he is not a good professor. I was taught nothing in regards to writing, although he did teach us a tiny bit about grammar the first week of class. He is very open about his political views and lets it get in the way of his grading. He assigns papers, grades them, and then gives very little feedback. Bad class.
He's extremely rude for no reason and embarrasses you in front of the class. I understand teachers having bad days, but it was everyday. I did all my work and did good on almost all the tests, but he called me out almost everyday.
He finds pleasure in giving bad grades to students that he does not like. He often likes to hit on attractive girls, and flirt with them before and after class (these are the only people who he grades fairly). If you are not an attractive girl, you are sure to get a C or B, even if you are an A student.

If you aren't a strong writer, I would not recommend taking his class in a shortened amount of time. He was fair to me but was very hard on certain classmates, those who didn't bring their books or turn in things on time.

Not a nice person in general. I thought it was just inside the classroom, but hearing more stories of his personal life led me to realize he's just really mean. Super difficult to get an A on his papers and doesn't give good feedback on how to improve in order to get an A.
This professor likes to embarrass people in front of the class, and has a very strange teaching method. Stay away if you can.
12-week course. He was frequently 10-20 mins late. Our class endured harsh criticism. He was easily de-railed into rants about politics & his life. Know the MLA format & grammar. DON'T take him if you aren't strong in writing/grammar. 5 papers (500 words), 3 in-class timed writings (500 words), 1 research paper (2000 words), & 5 grammar tests.
just a overall nasty teacher to me and likes to pick fun of kids with disabilities that are in his class emailed him and he blasted me about my grammar and decided to crack jokes about it the next day in class.

Horrible professor!! If you miss class 3x you will be withdrawn from the class. The class consists of the professor talking about he's going to have a Telsa in the future. Worst professor ever. Completely unfair no matter what the assignment or essay was. Harassed me via email because I needed help with an assignment and decided to fail me the day before the semester was over because on my final essay I used direct quotes from a short story that he claims was "plagiarized" even though the work was cited.
Please save yourself the trouble and DO NOT take this professor's class. Extremely rude all the time and very unreasonable! Even if you are a strong writer you will not get above a C in the class if he does not seem to like you. Gives very sarcastic feedback on papers and will even call them "useless" if he does not agree with thesis. Stay far away
Hes a bit harsh in his grading, but not completely off base with it. Just be sure to do everything on time and follow his instruction to the T. If he says to include the database in you citation, you need to do it. Follow all guidance.
I am not a D student, but Belyi decided to give me terrible grades for interpreting a poem the "wrong" way, then proceed to call me and my work illogical. He would leave smiley-faces at the end of aggressive e-mails and not give help even when I explicitly asked for it. I needed to drop this class to protect my GPA. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
I had a really good experience here in my first com class. Professor Belyi did a really good job explaning what needed to be done in the class and was a click away to answer any and all the questions I had. Participate and be involved in this class, ask questions, and make the most of it. It will be well worth it. Good luck!
Not helpful at all. Grades your papers by marking things wrong but does not tell you where you made the mistake or the correct way to do it. DO NOT CORRECT HIS MISTAKES; YOUR GRADE WILL BE AFFECTED! Does not allow you to work ahead and does not grade previous assignments on time. I would never take another class with this professor!
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. He continuously marked me off on assignments for things I had already done, but would not respond when I would ask about it. Two other family members of mine had him as well and told me the same things. DO NOT take his class unless you have to.
All prompts and directions are vague and hard to understand, but if you don't follow them EXACTLY, you will fail. Oh, and have any questions about anything? Sucks. He does not answer emails at all. I've contacted him several about important matters, and am yet to receive an email.
If you want to pass this class. Do not take it with him, he doesn't help. All he says is fallow the instructions online which are so confusing. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR THIS CLASS.
He honestly made my first semester of college miserable. Doesn't explain assignments well so when I'd email him he'd make me feel dumb for it or not even really answer my questions as if it was a fill in the blank answer. Yet if I didn't message him and attempted the assignment myself, he'd make me redo it completely because it wasnt what he wanted
Do NOT listen to other reviews. This professor is the best I've had in 2 years of college. He is always happy to help, clear and concise about assignments and makes class extremely interesting. He grades fairly, all the passive aggressive comments left about him are completely untrue. Do the work, stick to the prompt and submit on time.

I would receive a 50/50 on one essay and then the next week a 30/50. My writing and grammar would never change but somehow my grammar would be wrong within one essay ands right within another. Grading was never the same nor accurate.
I would never take this class or professor again if I had to. He is rude and doesn't respect students, especially those who ask questions. Grammar is this man's life. Save yourself the headache and don't take this class.
Belyi was an awful professor. His grading was very slow, causing us to wait for a long period of time to receive grades. He did not provide any help or support to his students, leaving them to struggle on their own. His comments were rude and unhelpful. I recommend that you save yourself and don't choose this professor at all. He oftenfailspeople.
Wouldn't recommend his class because his online tests weighed a lot on your grade and they were all grammer which I wish we had more practiced on. He is very particular on what he wants your research paper to be. He can be funny at some times, but his class was difficult.
Belyi is an absolutely great professor. I have never had an issue with his class or him. People complain that it is alot of work but there isn't anything to worry about. The literature that the class is assigned is mostly interesting and his grading is very relaxed. I would 100% recommend Belyi to anyone I know.
Andrei's class was tough, with a heavy focus on grammar and writing. While his grading could be inconsistent, unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prepping. Overall, if you put in the work, you can succeed in this class.
honestly just really rude, if you don't respond or live up to his standards you aren't worth his time. Unforgiving and very harsh grading.
If you don't show up to class, you will fail. He makes his quizzes super hard and almost nobody passed.
He was by far the rudest professor I have ever had. It started in the beginning of the class he would just stare at me like I was doing something wrong. He has a thing against girls, I'm not sure why. I took this class with my boyfriend so we helped eachother a lot and my assignments would be graded poorly, and my boyfriends would be goodDONTTAKEIT

He choose some interesting topics for the discussions and essays that is the only positive I can say. He is very rude, a tough grader and doesn't give you any constructive critique on assignments but phrases his feedbacks just to make you feel dumb. Many assignments were vaguely described I got 0/10 on a discussion because he didn't state the topic
Extremely rude, pretentious, and graded poorly, and flat-out refused to give me feedback including when I scheduled appointments to ask him. Mentioned his tests were AI-generated, and contained strange errors that support this. He wants his students to essentially write identical (and uninspired) papers, will mark off anything that doesn't 'fit'.
This class was incredibly boring. He was quite rude at times. There would be times where we would sit in complete silence for 5+ minutes?? Lots of papers, so to those who are not naturally writers, lock in. If I had the option to choose another professor, even if it was on another campus, I would take that change happily.
Treats ai detectors like a god, if your writing style tends to triggers ai detectors you will have to rewrite every essay multiple times.
Throughout the semester the professor was frequently rude and dismissive and interactions often felt unpredictable rather than supportive. Expectations and feedback shifted in a way that made it difficult to understand how to improve or succeed This situation became an example of how the entire semester's interaction dissolved in a mercurial nature
