never did i realize that the Markovitsian philosophy was so thorough. I entered this class a Hodgdonian and left a Markovitsian. This is the best class I have ever taken. Plus, professor Markovits looks great in suspenders.
Best professor at Michigan! Treats students as his equals...
Fantastic professor and person!
knows a scary amount of info. good guy.
The smartest deadhead I've ever met. Take any of his classes, you'll come away a better person.
Andy loves football (soccer) and cares about his students. He's a bit of a nut, but a good guy. Take his classes for an oddball take on the usual stuff.
Markovits is an awesome prof, eccentric and he will make you think out side the box. Essays are hard but the class is worth it. You learn so much more than facts, you learn to think for yourself. Do the reading before lecture so you know what he is talking about, go to office hours to get to know him, one of the coolest profs, cares about students
Fantastic Professor. Andy Markovits is a brilliant man! I cannot get enough of his classes, his lectures, or just talking to him in person.
AMAZING!! Probably the smartest person you will ever meet. Take any class you can with him, even if it doesn't sound interesting...i guarantee you he will make it interesting.
Great professor. Always available to meet with students and incredibly knowledgeable. Actually enjoys teaching, which is a welcome shift from other profs.
I think Pro. Markovits is overrated. His a pretty good prof. but I wouldn't go out of my way to take one of his classes. He's very smart, but sometimes goes off on random tangents. I'd say that he not a bad prof, but I've had better at U of M.
Although this class is very well taught it was quite boring. Markovits is a smart professor, but he does not know how to get the class involved or make his students feel comfortable with the stale atmosphere of learning about long gone phenomena. I would not take one of his classes again. There are definitely better professors at UM.
Super intelligent. Very interesting. Pretty tough grader.
After I got my first paper back I had no idea how I would do well in this class. I almost dropped it, but I'm so glad I didn't. This was one of the best courses I took at the University, Markovits is a spectacular teacher, very smart and very interesting. I had to work at it, but I did well and really enjoyed the course.
Amazing teacher, really enjoyed his class. He is sincerely happy when his students come to see him to talk. Really, really liked him
Very smart and could be a good teacher, but he often goes off on multiple tangents in a lecture, sometimes making it almost impossible to follow his train of thought. fairly hard grader. his comments on papers range from non-existent to not at all helpful or clear. I got "Awful, terrible" written on that top of my first paper but got a B on it.
Extremely smart professor, class is usually interesting, and lecture is pretty important to go to but not mandatory. Using notes from his lecture on papers is very helpful though. I learned a lot from this class but I would recommend POLSCI 160 over 140, it is more relevant to current events. Incredible professor though, highly recommended.
Markovits is a rambling professor, who treats every class like a sociology class. This was not at all what I pictured Comparative Politics to be (totally different compared to other profs). GSIs grade tough. Exhausted my paper allotment, with all his supplementary readings. Don't take his classes if you don't like sociology.
Markovits is an extremely smart guy (just check out his wikipedia page). However, his lectures are difficult. He just simply talks and often loses his train of thought, making it difficult to have clear notes. The GSIs grade tough. This class is all on you. I felt like I had no sources for help. Do not take unless you have to.
Markovits has an infinite knowledge of political science. He even wrote some of the Oxford encyclopedia entries that we read, which is incredible. He's a leader in so many fields, and I would take any course from him.
Professor Markovits is immensely knowledgeable. His lectures are sometimes difficult to follow. The course required a great amount of reading. If you are passionate about comparative politics and willig to work hard, I recommend taking Markovits.
Markovits' brilliance causes him to think faster and go off on tangents during lecture, so it's hard to follow him. He doesn't use powerpoint slides and randomly writes terms on the board - it's hard to know what's important and what's not. Your GSI will make or break you, as they grade the papers (which aren't hard, you can rewrite each one once)
Well, I liked him until I noticed we had to read 619 pages tonight. Now I'm not so sure...
He knows his stuff very well. He often goes off tangent but if you can decipher what he means, you'll be fine. If not, go to his office hours and ask questions until it makes sense. He really helps you out if you show interest in the class. I think he's a wonderful professor though at times the readings are a bit much.
He's very excited about the topics he talks about. He likes to go off tangent at times but he's willing to clarify his points when you go to office hours. He's a nice guy, good professor and though his lecture style is an acquired taste, if you work hard, you'll succeed.
He's a brilliant guy, no doubt, but not the greatest of teachers. Often goes on tangents, which makes note-taking difficult, and isn't the best explainer out there. He's not bad, especially if you go to office hours, but you will need to go to most classes and do most of the readings (at least eventually) to really understand what's going on.
An absolutely outstanding teacher; probably the best professor I have had at U of M!
An outstanding professor. I would be a mistake not to take one of his classes at U of M!
He's very knowledgeable and passionate about his topic, as well as friendly, but his teaching style detracts from class. He randomly writes terms and circles on the board without a hint of linearity, and he tangents a lot. The papers are not too bad, but prompts are vague and GSIs do the grading.
Great professor. A bit of a nut, but a great guy out of class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Grading is hard and he doesn't like giving "A"s on papers
Incredible lecturer, tends to ramble a bit, but is so enthusiastic it doesn't matter. My downfall here was my GSI who graded papers very hard. Otherwise the class was fun and interesting.
Markovits is INCREDIBLY intelligent. I don't really think he prepares for lectures, just knows all the information off the top of his head. However, he doesn't organize his information well. The GSI makes all the difference mine (Nico) made the info clear and graded nicer than the others. Markovits is brilliant and interesting, but rambles
Professor Markovits is extremely engaging and a very knowledgeable professor. His lectures take some getting used to, as he'll write important terms on the board and occasionally deviate from his original topic, but once you get used to them, classes with him become very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Second class I've had him for. Great professor, and incredibly passionate. Would strongly recommend attending office hours. He has five degrees from Columbia, and literally knows everything.
Andrei is one of the best and most passionate professors at the university. He has a great wealth of knowledge and is great at transferring it to his students. His lectures are disorganized and taking note can be difficult. Grades are determined solely by GSIs, which is good because it would be a lot harder if Andrei was grading.
Clearly brilliant, but rambles in lecture. He expects you to be 100% passionate about his class and as such assigns about 150 pages of reading per class - I couldn't keep up. His lectures are very disorganized, and while he is very passionate about the subject, on the whole I'd say he's a not very engaging, and overall mediocre, professor.
He is a nice man but he requires us to read like 200 pages per week, which is useless I think. Also he requires us to buy three of his books; that I do not think is ethical
Markovits is an amazing lecturer. He knows his subject better than any professor on this campus, hands down. Although, Sports/Politics (386) is completely graded by GSI's. The GSI's are law students and they're all pretentious a**holes. Never received a B on a paper in my academic career and I got a C on my 1st draft, with no advice or help.
Professor Markovits is the best. He is extremely intelligent, funny, and his lectures are pretty interesting. Sometimes, the class can be a bit confusing, but if you take decent notes in class and work hard on the papers it isn't hard to get an A. Highly recommended if you need a upper level writing requirement.
Markovitz is an amazing and acclaimed teacher. Definitely a must take for all political science majors. Classes are almost completely optional as he does not take attendance and everything you need to write papers is in readings and from your own intuition. That being said class is very interesting.
Markovits is the best professor that I have had at U of M. He is off the charts brilliant and passionate about the subject. If you are a sports fan and willing to write, take this class. If you are not a sports fan, take something else from Markovits, because he is that good.
An inspirational professor but a very tough grader and unnecessarily so. You have to be constantly working and editing your papers just to get a B in the class, unless you're a natural for the subject material. Do not take this class if you aren't ready to be engrossed in learning about sports, reading far too much, and writing long essays.
Professor Markovits is one of the best professors at the University. The lectures themselves can be tough to follow, but if you have an interest in sports in society or in political science I highly recommend going into his office hours. He is, if nothing else, a very interesting guy to talk to, and very passionate about the course material.
I have nothing but good things to say about Professor Markovits. I think the best thing about him is that he cares so much more about students' learning and academic exploration than he does about assignments and grading. He is so smart and helpful, I wish everyone at Michigan could take one of his classes!
I like Markovits as a person. He's really easy to talk to and has some interesting stories. But as a professor I didn't care for him. He is not clear on what he wants in the essays and a lot of his lectures aren't clear. However, if you like sports this class might be right for you, but it is no way easy.
The worst professor I've had at UM. Clearly he's brilliant, but beyond that he's a terrible professor. His lectures are boring and extremely, and I mean extremely, disorganized. He doesn't use powerpoint and writes pointless words on the chalkboard that are illegible. Uses vocab that is unnecessarily complex. Whole grade is GSI
Taking a course with Markovits is by no means easy, but he challenges his students to go above and beyond what they think they are capable and the payoff is obvious at the end of the course. He's a very personable, caring professor and won't hesitate to give it to you straight, which I admire and respect. Great teacher, even greater mentor.
He is not the best professor I have had- I was really interested to take this class and by the end of the semester wished I hadn't. His lectures are unorganized and the class is by no means easy. Would not recommend
There are only two assignments plus the final exam throughout the semester. Lectures can be a bit all over the place, but Markovits is extremely intelligent and literally wrote the book on most of the topics discussed in class. He provides plenty of opportunities to get more out of the class, and if you're a good writer, you'll be rewarded.
Markovits is a great professor. If you are looking for a class where you don't have to do much to do well, don't take his class. Instead, if you are looking for an incredibly interesting class with a professor who literally wrote SEVERAL of the books defining the subject - who cares about his students and pushes you to succeed, take this class.
Very interesting class if you want to learn more about the history and impact of professional sports. Markovits has a deeper knowledge of the subject area than anyone I've ever met, and he's easy to talk to outside of class and useful if you need help. Solid effort on the papers will get you a good grade.
I've had the pleasure of taking two of Professor Markovits classes, and I've enjoyed each of them. His sports class is particularly interesting, especially if you come into it already invested in the subject matter, but I wouldn't describe it as easy. You get out what you put into his classes, and if you work hard you'll be rewarded for it.
The reason why I picked UofM was because of the level of excellence that it offers to its studentsand I have truly experienced this by Markovits and this sports class. This class was fun, especially if you want to learn more about the cultural impact of sports. Markovits is a great professor, and you will be proud of the work you accomplish here
Hands down the best professor I had at U of M. Professor Markovits is incredibly smart and engaging, and his lectures are fun to listen to--especially when he gets sidetracked and starts telling stories. You'll have to earn your grade as he makes the class very tough, but it's completely worth it. Would definitely take this class again if I could.
The two classes I took from Professor Markovits' were the highlights of almost 20 years of organized education. If you came to University of Michigan to learn from some of the most brilliant and passionate people in the world, take anything he's teaching. Not going to be an easy A, but you'll learn.
Excellent class! The readings--and there were a lot of them--were well-selected and helped paint a nuanced portrait of the topic at hand. The lectures were meticulously planned and passionately delivered, which in conjunction with the illuminating readings made for a tremendously beneficial and educational class. Very accessible outside of class!
One of the best courses I took at Michigan! Professor Markovits is an awesome lecturer and very good guy. Lots of interesting discussions of how sports plays a role in our culture.
Professor Markovits is the most insightful and inspiring professor that I had at UM. He is extremely passionate about teaching, and his lectures and assignments are interesting and thought-provoking, which combine to create a motivating learning environment. My one piece of advice for UM students: don't graduate without taking a course with him.
Hands down my favorite professor. He is absolutely brilliant. Makes every lecture engaging, seamlessly weaving his own experiences/stories with the actual lecture material. Also very accessible outside of class so you will succeed if you put in the effort. His classes and mentorship have been some of the best parts of my college experience at UMich
Professor Markovits was the best professor I had at U of M. If you like sports or not, this is one of the most interesting classes available at the university. The subject matter is fascinating, but more importantly, Professor Markovits is engaging, funny, and knowledge beyond compare. I highly recommend.
Markovits wants his students to leave better writers, researchers and thinkers. So, he doesn't give good grades to bad papers -- if he did, we wouldn't become better writers, researchers and thinkers. It's a tough class, but if you but in the time, it's worth it (if not, don't take it - but seems a waste of your tuition $ to not want to learn)
Professor Markovits is an amazing professor who is absolutely brilliant. He knows so much about a range of subjects and constantly works to make his lectures engaging for students. He's a tough grader and is demanding of students, but his classes are incredibly rewarding and enjoyable.
Markovits is a good guy and he really loves what he does. The only thing about taking this class is that the lectures are so boring. I was put to sleep every time I attended lecture. All of his lectures are a 50 minute monologue of him talking about sports, in the most boring way possible. I would not recommend taking this class.
Professor Markovits is a stellar professor and has a wealth of information which he will gladly give to any student who wishes to learn. His class ignited my interest of sports- something that I used to have little interest in! I'd highly recommend taking this course!
Professor Markovits is the most intellectual professor at University of Michigan in his field. The combination of his breathtaking knowledge and the incredible lifetime experience in the academia world makes him a role model for success for all those who love higher learning. His lectures style makes you picture history through his words. Amazing.
Hard classes, but totally worth it. I took three classes with him (two on German politics, one on sports) and all three were incredibly interesting and challenging. You'll learn a ton from one of the best there is.
Professor Markovits is a fantastic teacher. He truly cares about his students and makes himself available - even outside of class - for in-depth discussions regarding class topics. I highly recommend taking a class with him!
Professor Markovits is one of the smartest and most interesting professors I've had at Michigan. He is an expert in his field and it really shows in lectures, and he also is very easy and enjoyable to talk to if you ever go to office hours. If you like sports, there is no reason not to take his PolSci 386 class.
Loved professor Markovits' class! I learned so much about the nuances of sports and the sociopolitical histories behind them. I also am doing independent research with him in lieu of the final exam and he is super receptive and very accessible to meet with. He's also written every book on the subject, so you know you're getting solid information.
I'm a junior and this was my favorite class that I've ever taken. I've always loved sports but Professor Markovits' lectures made me realize how big of a role sports has had in shaping society. Every lecture was so interesting and had useful information that I will always remember. I will definitely be looking to take a class with him in the future
Prof. Markovits is really brilliant! I learned so, so much in his class. He knows a ton, explains things clearly, is very willing to offer extra help, and is extremely passionate about the topic. I loved his lectures. Would definitely take again!
This class was absolutely fascinating. Markovits is insanely smart, and his lectures are amazing --he's really a wonderful teacher. I feel like his course opened a whole new world to me; I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in the material.
Andrei Markovits is easily one of the best professors I've had at the University of Michigan. His lectures are consistently fascinating, and he somehow manages to speak with authority on virtually any question students ask him. He is very accessible, both in class and in his office hours. I cannot recommend this class enough.
Professor Markovits and his class on German politics are among my favorite here at U of M. He is absolutely brilliant and brings a wealth of intimate knowledge and experience to his teaching. This may be a little intimidating at first, but he is very open to all sorts of questions and discussion during and outside of class. I highly recommend him.
Best Prof I've had at Michigan! He's tough, but it's worth it.
A great professor who really knows his sports, and places the subject in a socio/ political context. Makes you think of sports and its significance in society in fresh ways. A good lecturer and never boring.
Professor Markovits is the best professor I have ever had at UofM by far. He truly cares about his students and goes above and beyond to create connections with them. His passion for his subject area makes the class very interesting, even for those not particularly interested in sports. Professor Markovits is an absolute must take at Umich.
I really enjoyed lectures because he has such a wealth of knowledge and deep passion for sports. I also had the fortune to be in his discussion, which was rewarding because we had the ability to dialogue with him as he genuinely cared about our opinions. He is a tough grader, but he truly cares about your success and will help you if you ask.
Professor Markovits is by the far the best professor I've had at the University of Michigan. His class is incredibly interesting and the content is awesome. In addition, Professor Markovits gave me the opportunity to research with him outside of class on a topic I was very interested in. Best professor at the University of Michigan.
Professor Markovits is one of the best professor I have had at Umich. Learned and retained more in this class than any other. The lectures are always entertaining.
Dr. Markovits is extremely knowledgeable in his field of study. The keys to doing well in this course are: come to class every day, take copious amounts of notes, and do the readings. Go to office hours! Dr. Markovits will spend the time to ensure that you better understand the material. Work hard and you will do well in this course.
Professor Markovits is one of the best professors I've had at the University of Michigan. His lectures are incredibly interesting and engaging, and he is very passionate about sports. He has given me a great opportunity to do with research with him next semester and I am very much looking forward to it. Highly recommend you take his class
Andy is an absolute legend and his classes are a must-take before you graduate. He definitely makes you work for your grades, but you will become a better writer from his comments. He is one of those professors that if you go to office hours, you can create a real, lasting friendship and mentorship completely separate from class material.
I took 5 classes with professor Markovits (POLSCI140 - GER499). Andy's classes encouraged creative thinking, but also helped students develop the strong research, logical reasoning, and communication skills needed to support that creativity; The value any one of his classes extends far beyond academics. Cannot recommend this professor highly enough
Prof. Markovits passion is highly infectious and serves to make his lectures not only engrossing, but thought provoking. His vast knowledge of philosophy and sociology provides even greater context to the study of German politics. Those who come prepared to develop and apply their knowledge will gain a lot from this course. I highly recommend it.
Hands down, Professor Markovits' course was the best I've taken at the university. His unparalleled expertise in the study of sport make his lectures unique and inspired, often drawing on his own research. His lectures are always engaging, and synthesize a diverse array of ideas into easily digestible themes. You absolutely must take this course.
I have had Markovits as a professor, honors thesis advisor, and now serve as his GSI. Commenters here hit the nail on the head that Prof. Markovits is an excellent lecturer. For excellent students, Prof. Markovits' letters of recommendation help students gain admittance to T-14 law schools or top Ph.D. programs, and earn departmental awards.
Markovits cares more about the intellectual and personal development of his students than any other UM prof Ive encountered. Hes a keen critic and editor knowledgeable about every subject and always challenging you to refine your arguments and write passionately. If youre lucky enough to study under him, you will grow immensely as I did.
Getting an A requires a lot of reading and attending lecture to hear Professor Markovits' expert opinions, in order to bolster the argument of your papers. Having a good GSI is crucial as well; if you do not get a good GSI, developing your writing skills and getting an A is difficult. Overall this is an outstanding class with a great professor.
Professor Markovits is an absolutely amazing lecturer and a brilliant mind. The best class I have taken so far at Michigan! Extremely thought-provoking and creative, this class expands your thinking and writing abilities exponentially. My GSI and section was amazing, in which helped bring the whole class together. Highly recommend!
Professor Markovits is incredibly knowledgeable and can offer real experiences to further illustrate what he is describing. He is able to make connections between topics and fields that brings out the significance of the course content. He is also very caring and invested in his students. Would (and am) take again.
Professor Markovits was a phenomenal instructor. He was incredibly knowledgable on so many subjects and kept lectures interested throughout the course. He also allowed me to work on a research paper with him, which I found to be a very valuable experience.
I loved Professor Markovits' class. He has such passion for the subject (sports in this case but also political science in general) that you can't help but love learning what he's teaching. He's very knowledgeable and clearly has a wealth of experience but also is very open to learning from his students and encourages them to think for themselves.
Professor Markovits is an amazing professor - his Germany after 1945 class is maybe my favorite I've taken at Michigan. He is exhaustively knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches, and in lecture he asks the class questions which keeps it engaging. If you go to office hours and put time in to develop the relationship he can be an excellent mentor.
Markovits is the quintessential university professor. His knowledge of content, in this case the German political system, was contagious in the classroom. He respects academic risk takers and will always keep an open door to discuss the course and any academic thought you have. He mentored me closely in my time at UM and beyond. Take his course.
Held a great discussion section in which we discussed sports for an hour each week. Very intelligent and well versed in all different aspects of sports. Heavily recommend if you are looking for an interesting class on sports and culture. Lectures were very insightful and provided tons of information that were both useful in class and real life.
Professor Markovits' lectures are heavy (hard work, attend lectures). He also recommended me for MIW. I'm so thankful that told me about it and that he was so active in helping me succeed here. I was incredibly lucky to have had a professor who cares so much about his students and is passionate about teaching us.
It's not often that us students are gifted with a professor who not only has an impeccable array of knowledge on a plethora of topics such as Markovits, but who also have a genuine interest in bestowing that knowledge upon future generations. Andrei is a mentor and does everything he can to help me succeed, even outside the classroom context.
Prof Markovits had such a profound impact on me at that decades later I still reflect back on his fascism class (I marked course "494" though it was actually at Wesleyan). His depth of knowledge & urgent enthusiasm was unmatched. He revealed the very specific contexts and dynamics necessary for fascism to arise. Masterful, colorful & enduring.
Andy is the most intelligent and involved professor I have encountered at the University of Michigan. His encyclopedic knowledge of everything and his contagious enthusiasm for the topics he covers are inspirational. More importantly, though, he is a strong advocate for his students both before and after graduation. Absolutely amazing!
Professor Markovits is an incredible professor. He is not only knowledgeable about the topic but also passionate about teaching it well. He is also caring and eager to help students outside of class to understand complex historical processes. His anecdotes are priceless and advice is incredibly helpful for young scholars. Highly recommended!!
Professor Markovits is one of the rare professors who is incredibly brilliant, but also deeply cares about his students and their understanding of the course material. He is very fair and provides thorough comments on all essays. His lectures are engaging and well-organized. I left every lecture amazed at all of the things I'd just learned!
Professor Markovits is a rare professor who is incredibly brilliant, but also deeply cares about his students and their engagement and understanding of the course material. He provides thorough comments on all papers and he is focused on improving everyone's writing ability. His lectures are well-organized and interesting! Loved going to class.
Brilliant lecturer who really tries to make you understand the subject matter. Listens to your point of view without the slightest hint on condescension. A real life changer.
Professor Markovits is engaging, accessible, passionate, and essentially a walking encyclopedia with regard to his class topics. Highly recommend any of his classes. This one was very challenging (hence the 400 designation) but I came away with a new appreciation for German politics and the German Left's history.
The best professor I have had at Michigan! Highly recommend taking one of his courses!
An incredible professor and model of what a teacher should be! A fantastic lecturer, mentor, and all around human. My best experience at Michigan. Take his classes!
Totally worth taking all of his classes, even if you know nothing about the subject going in. You'll learn a lot.
Professor Markovits is one of the most intelligent professors I have had in my four years at Michigan. I could not have enjoyed his lectures more than I did, the class was full of sports history as well as general history. Each lecture was perfectly planned and fluid, it felt as though you were reading a story about sports over time!
One of the best professors! I performed research with him and we discussed the topic thoroughly together and he helped guide me in the research process. Had a lot of fun performing research on a topic that I found very interesting and I learned a lot about the topic and research in general. Definitely an awesome opportunity if you have the chance!
Professor Markovits advised an independent study of mine through the German Department. It was an excellent experience - he allowed me to write on the topic of my choice and granted total freedom in the research, but was also helpful enough to provide instruction and advice on readings. One can't find a more brilliant professor at UofMichigan.
Professor Markovits is the best professor I've had. After taking POLSCI 386 with him this fall (a class I highly recommend), I did an independent study with him this semester and am continuing our research this summer. He's very intelligent, helpful, and genuinely cares about his students. If you can take one of his classes, you absolutely should!
He is a really intelligent guy. His lectures are really open ended and you learn so much. He goes on tangents at times but the tangents are very interesting ones. The papers he assigns are great because they are very open ended with interesting enough to the point where writing them actually becomes fun. Both GSIs he picked were great which helps.
It was clear from the first lecture that Professor Markovits is extraordinarily well-read on a wide array of subjects related to the course. Moreover, the lectures are fascinating with personal anecdotes, cultural references and discussion questions. Most importantly, Professor Markovits truly cares abut the success of students taking the class.
This was my first POLSCI class at Michigan and I can't imagine a better professor. Markovits is incredibly passionate about teaching, and I plan to take his sports/politics class in the future. Lectures are optional, but I HIGHLY recommend you never miss a single one. I left every class truly inspired. I also recommend doing every reading!
Professor Markovits is the best professor I've had so far in my time at Michigan. His lectures were super informative but not too heavy on content, and his personal stories about the content of the lectures made it even more interesting. He also held office hours 4 times a week and is overall very supportive of his students. 10/10 would take again!
He is a great lecturer and I would take his class again. Beware, he hates students that are late, so keep that in mind. Also, don't be disruptive in class, he will call you out individually. Be a good student and you'll love the class.
Professor Markovits is my favorite professor in U-M. He gives amazing lectures for every class and incorporates a great amount of knowledge from an extraordinarily wide range of fields of study. We often discuss research after classes too. I strongly recommend people who are interested in political development and social change to take his class!
This is the class that I enjoyed most in my freshman year. Professor Markovits gives wonderful lectures for examining modern political development. He also did an unbelievably great work by interacting with 100+ students in every lecture. I strongly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn more about politics: you will learn a lot!
This was my second course with Prof. Markovits. He was AMAZING. In addition to engaging me in thoughtful topics, I felt as though his class improved me as a writer and a thinker. He is world-renowned in his academic disciplines, yet he still takes the time to help you (often meeting outside of regular office hours). Take Professor Markovits!!!!
This course underlines why Professor Markovits is so widely admired by students and faculty alike. With Professor Markovits' supreme knowledge of German politics and society, you will complete the class with an enriched understanding of both German politics and the greater issues currently facing the world. Don't miss this course.
This man inspired me to pursue a political science major. He's an incredible lecturer and person to talk with outside of class. You will definitely take something away from this class.
He is a gem! Very nice, knowledgable and kind. But his class was difficult, his paper topics were challenging, but also thought provoking!
Amazing and interesting professor. Not the easiest class but not super challenging. Markovits will teach you a lot and improve your writing. The best teacher to meet with outside of class in the university. Super cool guy.
You can tell just from his lectures how knowledgeable Professor Markovits is on politics and history. His lectures on Germany were particularly enlightening. He goes on tangents often, though. I think they're fun but it is not always easy to know what information is important. The paper topics were challenging but very doable.
Decided to pursue POLSCI as my major after literally taking his 140 as a random Social Science course. He is extremely knowledgeable and gives amazing lectures. I strongly recommend this class to everyone - even if you don't know anything about comparative politics, you will learn a lot and fell in love with the subject by the end.
Professor Markovits has done excellent work in his field and truly is a one of a kind professor. I suppose that your experience with this class varies depending on your GSI. Mine was a tough grader. This class is writing intensive. Get ready to write 20-25 pages total for this class.
Great lectures, but could be confusing at times as no notes are displayed for students to follow along, just speaks. The many papers were expected for a ULWR class. The topics were open-ended (the second one was terrible), but my GSI was understanding. There were readings for each class that were not useful besides encorporation into the papers.
Professor Markovits is a brilliant professor and very passionate about his knowledge. The paper topics were challenging and require critical thinking, but if you go to lectures and stay engaged, they're very doable.
Professor Markovits is without question one of the best professors at the University of Michigan. His courses are among the most engaging, insightful, and fascinating you can take at Michigan!
Professor Markovits is a remarkable lecturer who has an immense wealth of knowledge on various topics. Although he assigns a fair bit of reading, the assignments are manageable and relevant. Most importantly, he treats students with a high degree of intellectual respect and is willing to discuss things with students in a deep and meaningful way.
Professor Markovits is arguably the best professor at the University of Michigan. He shares the course material in an extremely charismatic matter. All of his courses are super interesting, and though the reading may be dense, it will certainly be useful for course papers. Attend office hours with Markovits and your GSI!
I took both his German history class and Sports class. Both required a lot of reading and writing, but I learned so much. He gives amazing lectures and he's extremely knowledgeable. One of the best professors on campus, and he's always available to meet with students outside of class. Also a little eccentric, but take at least one class with him!
He's a little odd in the best way. Assigns a ton of reading (...I didn't do any and did fine in the class). So knowledgeable and lectures are interesting. Really appreciates participation, and if you get to know him you will enjoy class more. Does not record lectures or post slides. He's retiring after W24 semester so take him while you still can!
Often presents opinion as fact- he has lots of experience in the field but somethings were solely opinion. Made many overgeneralized and deeply problematic statements about women in sports fandom. Many lectures were largely useless- 50 minutes rambling about history of a sport that could've been a 5 minute youtube video for consecutive weeks.
Markovits' seminar on the German and European Left was one of the most rewarding courses I took at Michigan - a must-take for any self-proclaimed socialist, of which there are many in Ann Arbor. I particularly enjoyed his office hours, where groups of students could further discuss the topics discussed in class. High standards, but he's very kind!
Markovits is a brilliant professor who really engages his students. The workload is heavy but manageable if you stay on top of the readings. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prepping essays and discussions. His class will challenge you, but it's worth it.
