VERY UNHELPFUL AND HARD TO UNDERSTAND PROFESSEUR THAT GIVES YOU NO CLEAR PICTURE OF WHAT LIES AHEAD. VERY GOOD AT MAKING YOU WASTE TIME.
worst prof. ever. can't understand him. ignores your questions. provides no help. thinks very highly of himself.
cant understand him, every lecture is just about proving formulas and doesn't provide any knowledge on what's going to be on the assignments
the guy is horrible, he should lock himself in a room and prove formulas to himself all day but please don't let him teach , mercy on the students
This guy is terrible...always proving formulas, and the exams is super hard. But he thinks is easy..Well in fact he expect student to be ph.d level to understand those stuff. Getting a passing grade is EXTREMELY hard from this guy. Worst prof i've ever
This teacher sucks. Hi doesnt know how to teach and he's always just facing the headboard talking in his heavy accent. Come on York, get professors who can speak english clearly! This teacher offers no help at all, our midterm average was 30%!
the best professor ever.Has a good command over the topics and will explain it to them well.Very imaginative and exreemely funny in class. All the other ratings are only becuase those stupid students might not have attended classes regularly.
Great prof! The course itself was very difficult, but he is the best prof to take econometric courses from. He teaches very clear, and really tries to make sure students understands the course material well.
Ignore the fact that he has an accent (he comes from the Russia), he is very helpful and nice. Try to come to his office during the office hour, he is willing to teach you on a one-to-one basic.
I only got 55 in the final exam (out of 100) and ends up getting the letter grade B+. What can you expect?
Yo wheres the zero rating cuz this guy deserves it. Im surprise how he even got his teaching certificate. This guys gotta start to speak better cuz he just mumble. God he should go bak to skool himself and take english first. LOL

He is a very good prof.
Very good
very poor!!! unclear lecture!!!very hard assignments!!!
Take his course!
He is one of the best profs i had at york. Ignore his mild accent and notice how easy it is to understand material(he repeats things couple of times) and how easy he makes stats to be. People that got bad marksn should've studied. In this case if you study you'll do great. Take his course!!
not too bad
if you can't learn with a foreign prof don't take this course. his accent can be heavy at times causing lack of interest and learning thus u hating this course and failing. on the plus side, he repeat info as well as post lectures notes (from the text) for you so you can have a copy.
Good and fair
No Comments
As for me, I got A in his course and all my friends in this class got at least B. So, good teaher -> good marks. Do you expect something more?
Not bad
hes the best ever, if you gonna take econ3210 or econ2500 go his class, otherwise, dun take it, coz u may lose the opportunity to get an A
Hi does not bell curve. So, if you study you will succeed in his courses, if not ... However, you must know he is always ready to help (if you ask for help) and is very fair. I know that.
Assignments and exams are different, at times its hard to make out what the hell he is talking about, "prof beware"
Hi's OK
Very good prof.
he is ok....if u try u'll get high marks... good luck
very good
critical to others and lazy enouth on teaching, good at make simple to complicate very selfish guy, good looking though...
He explains everything very well and as many times as you need to understand. Very helpful.
Explains everything so many time that it is impossible not to understand. Easy mid-term exam (if you attended his classes, of course) :)
Nice prof.
A very nice professor
One of the best professors I had at York.
Awesome Prof! He is very helpful and he explains concepts of the course very well. With math you have to practice a lot with the exercises to understand on another level than what the prof tries to explain. Just try to attend class regularly and practice the exercises- with this in mind you are guarenteed to do well.
He is terrible at teaching, slow and barely understands the concepts himself
The best at York
He us very helpful! Now really, the course material is not hard, if you don't do the work of course it wouldn't make sense. Just practice the questions he assigns you and you will be fine for your midterms and final! If you do your work, its an easy A.
Easiest course ever, Prof is really nice and he goes over things slowly so everyone follows. He also gave out bonus marks for answering questions in class. (I got an Extra 5% on my final mark). He let us take a formula sheet into the exam so I didn't even have to memorize anything.
This is one of the nicest profs at york. He teaches really good, very easy to understand. He is a great guy. Keep up with the good work!
Very good prof who succeeded in making the course interesting
Very goog Prof. Helpful and intelligent.
4 questions for a midterm worth 25 marks each, questions are 1 sentence with one answer, What the hell!If your good at memorizing over 200 stats questions, he takes 4 questions from the book and thats your midterm then go ahead take this class.
Extremely nice and helpful.he really cares about students.teaches very clearly and asks several times if everybody is clear on the subject.one of the best at York.just put a little effort and you'll do well in his course.
Very good prof! Tries to make statistics fun and genuienly cares about his students' success. If you go to 75% of his lectures and do 75% of his assigned questions, I'd say there's a 95% chance of you getting an A.
Easy course! I recomend taking this course with him. I ended up with an extra 20% bonus points so only needed a C+ on the final to get an A+ over all!
He is OK, I mean he is harmless. If you study moderately, then you can get at least B. Although I hate math, I didn't fail :)However, the tutorial class sucks!! Overall, I don't take his class again.
I wouldn't recommend him.
Very knowledgeable teacher, really cares about students. Explains everything very clearly, so that the material is very easy to understand. Very useful course.
I really like this prof.
Excellent prof!
You will learn alot from his class, but you will have alot of trouble understanding him, and that seriously diminishes the quality of the course. I would not encourage taking a class with him, I did well in the class, but I didn't learn anything I couldn't learn from merely reading wiki, and some of those articles are more useful than his notes.
It was an amazing course. I believe this is the best prof at York, fair and nice.
I never studied statistics before and this class was my first statistical class in my life. I was surprised how it may be easy when taught by such a great prof.
Excellent!
ok, I got A+ in his class, his midterm is easy, if you know how to do the question he teach in class, you will get at least 90%, you even dont need to go to his lecture, if you know how to do the assigement he post, you will get 90, thats the question he would ask you on midterm/final
this couse is really easy. just understand the problems he offers during the class and u will get an A+
Lectures are boring. Assignments are long and TA will not give you what you deserve. His midterms are Hard.
Very good professor!!! Explains the material in detail even don't need to open the book, just come to his class, solve the problems and you'll get a good mark!!! One of THE BEST profs in York!!! was taking his course last winter!!! Recommend all the students to take him!!!
Great prof! Really cares about his students and overall a really nice guy.
Go to tutorials. Read the textbook right after the lecture finishes. Do EVERY problem in the textbook. Buy the solutions manual. Do the assignments well and the midterm and you'll just need like a 65 in the final to get an A+ in the course.
I thought finance was interesting, what he was teaching wasn't finance
Terrible
I did ok in class and learned many things about stocks. However, his marks doesn't reflect your hard work. He makes you work a lot for assignments in Gauss which makes you focus less on other courses.
Good to learn stuff in his class. But he is very strict on marking the midterm and final. Since they are open book, he won't give you proper marks if you don't write the way he likes it. He will tell you in start of the classes that taking his course will gain you good future but that's is upto you to decide Long assignmentswill impact othercourses
I did terrible mistake taking this course.
I don't know what to say about him. Because the more i say the less it is for him. He will tell you that you will get a good job in future from doing his assignments but don't think it is true unless you are an A+ student.
You can learn same stuff from the book. He is a very hard grader and it's not easy to understand him even though he keeps repeating stuff all the time.
I think I just lost all my time on these two courses when I could do much better in others if I just had time for them, since his assignments take very long time. He uses the software called Gauss and it is pretty old and not too useful nowadays
You will spend more time learning how to code, than learning Finance or Economics. Best to avoid at all costs.
I didn't like his long assignments. He give only 10 min of break in 3 hours of class and sometimes he will make you stay 15 min more even though class is done.
Even the attendance is mandatory which is very weird considering that we are grad students and not kids from kinder garten.
A great and very polite professor. Always ready to help students after classes. I took two courses with him, 5030 and 5520. Very consistent and useful courses. A great combination of theory and empirical exercises based on real financial data. Perhaps, the best grad courses I took at York. You will learn a lot. Easy to get an “A” courses.
All the time will be wasted on learning gauss code. You won't get more time to learn his concepts. Learning code doesn't make anyone smart but learning concept will!!
The guy knows what he is talking about obviously. However, he has such a hard time explaining it. He will go on talking about the same concept for 20 minutes. You could fall asleep and wake up and still not miss a thing in class. Other than that, he was not very helpful to me at least. Maybe he was to other students.
I loved both his courses and found them extremely useful. Honestly, the comments below are ridiculous! They seem to be written by the same person that seemingly failed these courses and now is posting over and over and over and pretends to present the majority of classes. She spammed not only this prof, however.
He is strict in marking exams and midterm. You need to write the way he likes it else he will give you no part marks. He has open book midterm and exams so he tends to give less marks if it is not written accurately and concisely. He doesn't like if people write useless stuff and tends to give 1/5 even if your answer is right.
He explains everything thoroughly and makes sure that students understand. He gives a few chances to score bonus marks by giving some challenging exercises during some classes. By doing that, he gives you an incentive to know your stuff long before the final and it works. Great prof. I would definitely take him again.
Nice guy. His lectures are a bit tedious and he repeats the same thing over and over often. I guess he's doing it for the benefit of those that are a bit slow. Test questions were very similar (if not the same) as those in the textbook, so to do well in this course you just gotta practice as many problems as you can.
Amazing professor! He explains the material in clear and interesting way. Midterm is similar to the book problems, final was tough. If you do the notes, understand what he is talking about, and read the book, you will get a decent grade!
He is very clear as to what you will expect to see on the exams midterm was really easy, 4 questions and 2 of them directly from the textbook. Final was a bit tough, around 10-14 questions- and the focus is on 'after midterm' material. He gave 14 % in bonus exercises in class. I have never taken stats before and i got an A. (he did bellcurve)
Best professor I had at York for 5030 & 5520. At the beginning of the semester he will scare you about how tough the courses are. Don't let this intimidate you. His courses are the most interesting & useful courses I've taken. He makes you work for your grade, but is beyond helpful. He's very clear on course material and on what is expected.
He was a great professor. He took his time explaining everything. And he helps students with little 10 minute assignments for bonus marks. Midterm was exactly what he said , pretty easy if you study. Final exam was quite difficult. Questions are very similar to those in the textbook. He allows a double sided cheat sheet.
easy lectures and hard hard test, you would never expect it coming.
just attend classes and try get as many bonus marks as you can
Tests and exams are very difficult. Put only 3 questions on midterm so if you don't get one right screws up entire exam. Says to study all the material and then focuses on 1 concept...
One of the best profs I've ever taken at York. He explains everything very clearly and makes you understand all the difficult concepts. Tests are not the easiest ones, but fair. Try to do as many problems from the textbook as you can and attend the lectures. It is also possible to get bonus marks during the class, which is really helpful.
so mean
don't even think about it lol
Just terrible. Stay away at all cost.
Do not take this course with this person
Please avoid him. Worst prof Ive ever taken at York
I regret taking this course with him. Its unfortunate that people like him teach at a graduate level.
Mandatory Attendance. Notes are good for mid exam (keep book handy in final -open book for 1 question). Does not explain well how to do homework (like each technical steps). This is essentially a computational finance course (if programming is not your 2nd language, don't take this course). Take ECON5030 with Razvan instead.
Very nice professor Explain very clearly Midterm and exam are not hard
ECON 2500 Terrible, he asks students to go to classes for attendance, and although we went most of us fail. Wast time and money, like way!
Professor Andrei is nice!
Professor Andrei is a really good professor. I really enjoyed his lectures and he explains things well. He gives bonus marks throughout the course but you have to attend classes to get them. Midterm was just like he explained, easy if you work for it. The only problem is that his finals are hell. Make sure you get the book plus solutions manual.
He's very rude and doesn't seem like he cares for the students.
he doesn't have any zoom lectures, won't show you want you did wrong on your quizzes, but the one good thing about him is how fast he is with his email responses. i'm not even done the course yet and i already hate it tbh. stats isn't hard, it's just the constraints he puts on quizzes that really sucks. 4 questions in half an hour, w no Q reviewing
terrible professor!!!!
He doesn't care what you have to say, do not take this class with him. Tests are 30 minutes with about 3 questions. No room for error and worst of all the questions that he asks on the test are not remotely similar to the questions in the text or in the examples of his lectures. Oh wait he doesn't have lectures during the pandemic, even worse.
I swear to god, Ive never written a review before, but I swear if you love your GPA DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT take it with him believe me, he's bad at explaining, doesn't care for anyone, would not take it with him if my life depended on it
Good luck
I hate the way he gives quizzes. The final test is disgusting. Reviewing is no use at all.
his questions for quizzes and tests are weird. I would say the content is easy but the man makes it wayyyy too tough. don't even know how this man grades his stuff.
Awful! Worst online course I've ever taken! He never makes announcements but upload pdf instead! Quizzes are wired! 10-15% for only 2-6 questions! Solutions are forced to send with many requirements and only give you 5min to transfer format and send by email. Fail to upload in time, you will get a ZERO! No weight transfer, no make-up!
Do not take Any of his class! Waste of money!
worst class
Wouldn't even be clear if we use textbook (we do, and I did). Won't award partial marks. Quizzes aren't aligned with chapters assigned on preceding weeks. Honestly, I feel cheated. And I hate this professor. That's all I can say.
He is just the worst professor i have ever studied from.... He is "the" worst...
Theres no relationship between his PPT given and the real question delivered during quizzes and exams. He only gives very few questions in the quiz and that means each of them was graded for a high percentage. Dont pick him!! I've already regretted
Worst professor
Great professors and excellent course material
One of my best professors ever! Looking forward to doing my thesis under his supervision
Very good lecturer, but very unfair and illogical marker. Power points and lectures are really spot on- they cover the material well, but his tests are dangerously short, ridiculously over-valued, disconnected from the lecture material and overly demanding. The criteria he uses for even submitting tested material is very strict and overbearing.
Followed all the instructions and still received 0 marks on all quizzes. He requires solutions sent via email. My solutions and answers were correct and were sent on time with the details he demanded. I guess this man can't write anything other than 0.
I never ever graded a professor, but I can't help to grade this one. HE IS THE WORST!!!!! I did his online course ECON 2500 for this semester, no class, no recording, the only thing we have is the textbook name and Powerpoint PDF. He doesn't explain the questions you asked if you send him an email. Worst ever.
4 quizzes value 60% and final exam values 40%, no make-up, lots of rules, if you miss a tiny 1 rule, then the quiz is 0% and and and he even won't give you the right answers for your quiz, his explanation is the textbook or the PowerPoint has lots of examples and you should know the answers, but the quizzes questions' are not similar at all.
There are only 2-6 questions per quiz and it weighed a lot. Overall, terrible experience, I wish I saw these reviews before I chose this course. He shouldn't be a professor at York since so many negative reviews here!!!!!
Worse prof ever, don't take his classes
Follow rules in order to receive a grade otherwise 0 but he is a great professor!
He gives incredibly easy tests and then takes an incredibly harsh marking scheme. Quizzes are multiple choice but you need to write up your workings for answers, and if you mess up workings in any arbitrary way you get a 0 overall. Exam was trivial, but somehow got marked 0 despite being just basic questions about averages and standard deviations
awful professor
He's actually a great Stats Prof. His powerpoints aren't long and he really takes his time to explain them to you( can go over it like 10 times if you're confused). He gives practical examples too. Quick Advice: This course is one of the few courses that you will most likely need in your life( as a finance or econ major). Take it SERIOUSLY!!
Very generous professor. Let us take two sheets with us to the final and often gives out extra bonus marks to boost our grade. Can be hard to understand sometimes but if you study well you will do well in his class.
I could not understand anything. the only D I ever received in my life. sincerely, a straight A student
Prof Semenov is amazing. He explains everything in detail and makes sure you understand. He lets you bring a double-sided sheet with formulas to exams bc he is mostly concerned with the student knowing the logic rather than memorizing. He also gives bonus questions similar to exam questions so you can get extra marks! Cannot recommend him enough!
Professor Semenov is extremely nice and caring he will be willing to help if he feels like you genuinely put in effort. He is generous with so many chances to get bonus marks. He also allows a two sided cheat sheet with steps and formulas. In addition he lets you to have print outs of the hypothesis testing and box plot.I highly recommend.
The worst professor I ever had
Professor Semenov is generous with bonus marks and allows cheat sheets. While his teaching style may require effort, unstuck study can be a helpful study aid alongside the textbook. Overall, the class is manageable if you engage with the material.
The worst professor I have ever taken. Severe accent, not responsible, always asking why to students' questions. Only F I get.
The worst professor ever. He is clearly not proficient in English. He doesn't know what he is teaching. He is not considerate or helpful. He is extremely rude and has a very strong accent. It is difficult to understand him. Avoid taking his section at all costs.I don't know why the department is not replacing him with someone more efficient.
The course itself is very simple if you pay attention and attend lectures but beware the proff. He has a tendency to ask very vague questions in tests and exams that lead you to believe he wants an answer that is completely different than what he actually wants. He does not clarify in these vague questions even if you ask.
Honestly, I will say the prof is okay, best to have some background knowledge before attending classes and make sure to attend classes. Most be ready to go through the textbook and answer as many practice questions. No idea of actual exam coverage, so study each chapter really well. Very few in class practice questions and no assignments.
I am currently taking Prof Semenov this summer for ECON 2500, and all I have to say is that he is genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. He's rude, and when you ask for help, he'll brush you off, telling you to read the slides and go over the textbook questions. He has a very thick accent, which is hard to understand. Yorku get better profs.
Prof semenov is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had and the course isn't even finished yet. He's rude, and when you ask for help he brushes you off telling you to just read the slides and go over the textbook. He also has an accent, which makes it hard to understand what he's saying most of the time. Yorku, you better fire this guy
Worst professor of my uni life, teaches basics puts the hardest in the exam, also very difficult to understand due to his accent
This professor is very hard to learn from. His accent makes lectures difficult to understand, and explanations are often unclear. He and the TA are very passive-aggressive and rude. The tests are extremely harsh. They look simple, but marking is very strict with almost no part marks, so small mistakes can destroy your grade. Avoid this professor.
