The flipped classroom style works if you take the time and effort to actually follow it, and my friends and I in the class have agreed that we feel like we're retaining lots of info. He wants us to succeed, and while the quizzes and exams can be stressful, there are many resources to help prepare. Straummy mommy isn't that bad guys I promise.
he truly seems to care about his students, + learning with his teaching style isnt difficult if youre responsible and do work outside class. the fault in his class is in his exams and daily quizzes. tests expect you to know more than the practice youre given (textbook, quizzes, + practice tests), so you feel unprepared. this is a high-stress class.
Straumanis places a heavy emphasis on learning concepts over memorization. The quizzes are divisive, but they are a good driving factor to layer concepts and keep yourself on track. Tests have a built in curve that gives room for error, and aren't difficult to do well on. Keep a positive mindset and the class will be all fine.
Yes Ochem is hard but he makes it so much more stressful. He doesn't teach, his exams are so hard that he has to give massive curves so the whole class doesn't end up failing. He should think about why he has to curve so highly. Also doNOT listen to the good reviews. He practically made the class feel pity for him today to give him good reviews.
I liked the structure - no lectures, self-paced lessons instead. As someone with a good foundation, I liked not having lectures. You will struggle in this class if you can't learn independently. My issue: he doesn't have ANY passion for ochem. He assumes all students just want to get it over with. If you're actually interested in orgo, DO NOT TAKE.
I tried to give him and his "style" a chance. I tried to keep up, and I honestly I did learn at least something, but the high stress of this class made it overall a really unenjoyable experience. You can do well if you work hard and dedicate the time. Unfortunately I just found everything to be too overwhelming. He's funny tho. RIP to his bike.
Only thing I got from this class is Strauma Trauma.
If you are good at teaching yourself, or have friends that can help you learn, then you will be alright. 94% of your grade is tested material. He does add curves, but still a very challenging class. You need to have self discipline and work to find the gaps in your knowledge because he won't tell you. Possible to comeback from a bad test grade.
Asked and pleaded with us to bring his rmp and ecis scores up. If he was a
My only complaints are that LA's were unprepared frequently and the workbook had important errors. His class is flipped classroom so know that beforehand!! His explanations were great tbh. Please keep in mind that people who fail will drop a 1 star and those who get As drop the 5 star. work hard and don't let reviews cloud your judgement.
Pretty hard. You need to know the concepts extremely well to do well on the tests. He ads 20-40 bonus points per test depending on difficulty and how well everyone did. Overall you can get an A but you'll have to dedicate a lot of time towards this class to get it. Class is flipped so you have to teach yourself.
I used to be chill with him until he dropped an email telling us ways to get bonus points on our final, only to send another one 40 minutes later saying that it was actually an email from last year and didn't apply to us. That's honestly the tip of the iceberg though the 5 minutes quizzes every class really took it all from me.
He is the best professor to ever walk the earth. I wish I could take him for every class. Where is his bike? I think I have it.
Get to know others in your class, as the more motivated your group is, the more understanding of the concepts you'll have! OVERALL, lots of curve for those that work hard!
Tough class that had little to no guidance from the professor. If you prefer learning through repetition repetition and practice this class is not for you. He doesn't seem to care about students and won't give any guidance on concepts. Never involved in learning and only pops into work hours to talk about being brave and fearless about ochem.
Class structure is different from traditional lecture based class as it is guided assignments in class. Great professor who really does care about your success. Really good curves where you can miss almost 20% of questions and still get an A. Ochem is hard in general but he does make a strong effort to give lots of resources and help to learn.
He literally is the worst
eh. this year's material was ridiculously hard compared to last year's, so exams and quizzes were hard to prepare for bc we were NEVER given accurate practice material. I saw a diff prof's midterm and it was exactly like our DAILY quizzes so take that as you will. if you gave a victorian child our 2nd midterm, they would probably have an aneurysm
He spends an awful lot of the few moments he's up at the lecture podium trying to sell you on why his style of "teaching" is the best. Really regret taking his class, it's been a black hole in this entire semester. Exams are okay, because he gives a massive curve and lots of buffer for the grade but it really doesn't beat learning the material. :
horrible
his class makes you understand the reason behind his divorce
my grade receded faster than straw daddys hairline
flipped classroom (you teach yourself) you either hate it or like it only time will tell. his inspirational talks are so not inspirational. if you're disciplined this class could be good for you, but if you need lectures to do well this class isn't it. tests were CRAZY difficult this year compared to last years cakewalks, im most mad about that tbh
Don't let bad reviews discourage you. Yes it's difficult but duh its ochem. If you take advantage and buy into his method you'll learn a lot better than in other ochem classes. Find people to study with, go to work session, watch summary lectures, talk to him. He cares and makes it super doable to do well with lots of bonus just DO NOT fall behind.
worst professor i have ever experienced he dropped my gpa and made me question everything. o chem is already a difficult subject and he made it 1000 times worse BY NOT TEACHING he single-handedly ruined my college experience.
flipped classroom where you teach yourself with help during class, so would not recommend if you like active learning w the professor teaching! stressful since quiz every class, the quizzes would sometimes be more detailed/harder than in the activities. exams are weighed heavy, despite a curve you could get a lower grade bc of quizzes + instapoll
Quiz every class. Midterms/Finals/Quizzes weighted 24%. Misses a lot of important details that you later find out are important for the exams. Most LAs are useless except for a couple. Remember that one scene in Spongebob where they say "BALD, BALD, my EYES!" at King Neptune? Yes, he's that bald. It hurts my eyes.
I have made a rate my professor account purely to talk poorly of this one professor because he was that bad, he forces students to buy his textbook to view their grades, provides max 10 minutes of lecture and tests on material unseen from HIS textbook. His research showing this "method" works only proves that he forces kids to learn on their own
Worst and most stressful professor taken. All learning is done by yourself based on a workbook poorly written by the prof, as he doesn't lecture at all. You have to put in 20+ hours a week just to get a basic understanding of concepts, and test questions are ridiculously hard based on the knowledge provided. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.
PLS PLS PLS PLS DO NOT take him unless you want your mental health and confidence to be severely deteriorated. Worst professor of my 14 years of schooling. He genuinely does NOT care about his students' grades and will use the excuse that he is "preparing" us or "challenging" us to do better. Absolute BS. take it w anyone but him you'll thank me
if you want the students to learn independently, you should explain everything in the exercise answer key. I don't need the answer, I need explanation.
Worst professor I have ever had. He makes you learn on your own with a textbook that you HAVE to buy. The pop quizzes are so stressful, and balancing this class is IMPOSSIBLE if you have other classes so get ready to devote your life to ochem. If you want to lose sleep and hair, go and take him but there's a reason that his bike got stolen.
I've never had a class take so much from me and wreck my GPA. There's absolutely no logic in forcing us to teach ourselves, scold us for not following his "advice" (don't memorize but here's 5 pages of things you won't pass without memorizing), and shame us for writing bad reviews when he doesn't lift a finger to help us succeed. Please avoid him.
On balance, a good professor but his style of flipped classroom can be difficult at first but it forces students to be honest with themselves. Midterms are fair and emphasize this with lots of built in EC. Only thing that is annoying are daily quizzes which are significantly harder than activities. Rewards consistency, not cramming.
do not take if you want a future he genuinely is the worst professor i have ever encountered bc he does not teach and depends on yourself to teach organic chemistry?? he needs to get fired your grade solely depends on your exam scores and quiz scores. his exams are extremely difficult in comparison to last years for no good reason except to harm us
i wish i was the one that stole his bike
Step 1) Get ready to glaze Strawdaddy daily. Ingest lots of water before going down on the daily quizzes Step 2) Pray To God before only 2 midterms. Probably the only amount of times his wife let him smash Step 3) This class will help you become a criminal and steal bikes. Strawdaddy had an irl demonstration of this skill ;)
I like Straumanis he is silly and cares about his students especially when you ask him questions in class. I have made great friendships during work sessions. However, there was no structure as to what content was important, and what concepts to emphasize vs. which ones not too.
I can not find a word to describe what a bad professor and teacher he is. He alone ruined my GPA. The only thing he does well is sending useless nonsense motivational emails once a while, and continue to destroy grades of the students. Do not pay attention to the positive reviews, it is the best class to take if you want to fail or have a bad grade
I like him. This course is perfect for students who enjoy self-study like me. I love reading textbooks and doing exercises by myself. I love teaching my group members in class. He also gives a lot of extra credit. I got a 70% raw score on MT2, but my curved score is 97. I will definitely take Ochem 2 with Dr.Straumanis next semester.
Unless self-teaching ochem is something you feel confident in doing, save yourself the headache. He never gave us enough resources to learn or explained anything. Also never offered clear study methods or ways to improve. Spent the whole semester giving 'inspirational' speeches instead of doing his job as a professor. Didn't learn anything 0/10.
AVOID AT ALL COST. Strommy doesn't give lectures. Instead he has this delulu expectation for you to teach yourself ochem, which isn't possible with his terrible workbook. Every lecture you have a quiz w/ only 2 questions. The tests were INSANE w/ no structure. I'd done everything from his workbook, workshop, etc. but it's in vain.
I thought that this class was by far the hardest I've ever taken, but that it is completely doable to get a good grade if you put in the effort consistently. There were LOTS of extra credit on exams but you really have to take charge of your own learning due to its flipped classroom nature.
If you cannot teach yourself, don't gaslight yourself into thinking you can and don't take his course. Take someone else. The whole time I was in his class I felt like I was in the masterclass for gaslighting. Its honestly a toxic relationship. People that do well either already can teach themselves or have a strong study group. Know what you need.
SO many errors in his 2009 workbook. These errors mess with your mind because you are having to learn from the book entirely. Also his tests are nothing like his exercises. All of the CTQ answers act like you already know ochem and DONT explain things. This whole class is him trying to make you put 2 & 2 together without any explanation. SAD CLASS
First-year med student here! Just wanted to say I got a C- in Straumanis' O-Chem 1 class. I thought my life was over. I promise you guys, I am living proof that you will be ok. I promise. Keep working hard. You got through this (is he still bald?) dumbass professor, so I know you are strong. xoxo besties :)
UT NEEDS TO FIRE HIM!!!!!!!
Awful... literally awful, like what even was that final? And stop asking your TAs/LAs to leave good reviews for you fam, no one is buying it.
Do not take this professor. Please. I am begging you. I would rather get back together with my ex-boyfriend.
The exams are not representative of what is on the chem activities and the professor spends only 10 minutes lecturing in every class because of the reverse classroom method. Worst professor ever, thanks for making my life miserable and ruining my GPA Straumanis.
Disappointed. The long lengthy email was unnecessary, you would have been better off not saying anything at all and that is what I suggest you do moving forward as your so-called motivational speeches have HIGHLY contradicted your actions as a professor. UT should really reevaluate their choices if they wish to maintain the sanity of their students
This is an extremely hard class with an extremely unforgiving set up. Only two midterms, a final and daily quizzes make up your grade. The final was formatted unlike anything we had ever seen and there were no additional resources given (practice exam, review, etc) I do not recommend this class to anyone. Also, never expect him to answer and email
At first I felt really lost w/ flipped classroom but after following straumommy's advice and forming a study group it helped make the class more manageable. Very time-consuming class (daily quizzes :( ) but I like the way his workbook emphasized understanding rather than memorizing. HUGE curves (~30 points on MT2) on tests. That final was BS though
I have been a straight A student my entire life. I had a 4.0 even after taking gen chem, which is a relatively difficult class. However, I made a B- in this class after much effort. This class made me feel stupid and incapable. If you can take any other professor, do so. Straumanis is a nice guy, but, respectfully, he
the few times I have spoken to him personally he was very aggro and condescending! also publicly humiliated one of his ta's for an honest mistake on one of the quizzes. showed us the message he sent to the poor guy and jesus christ what a petty man. very telling of his character.
rmp deleted my review... anyways i will always come back to make sure y'all don't take this class bc no one deserves to be screwed over by try-hard reviews saying to take this class. do not take this class if u care abt ur mental health and GPA you pay for his mistake-filled textbook but if that isn't enough you have daily quizzes and instapoll!
This class is doable and the quizzes/exams are actually very fair. Ochem is a difficult class, and most of the bad reviews come from students who think they deserve a good grade even though they didn't put in the work. I was able to finish the course with over a 100% by completing CAs, exercises, practice quizzes, and lecture summaries. That's it.
I did not do so hot! BUT that's bc I wasn't fully understanding the material until a week before the final, and then it was too late for me. You have to put in work early. He's very hands-off unless you can catch him by going to work sessions and SI (which are helpful anyways). Variation in test difficulty from previous years. But curves a lot!
Ochem is hard no matter who you take, but he made it unnecessarily stressful with daily quizzes, and exams were much harder than last year (MT2 im looking at you). I only got an A by sacrificing all my time and sanity bc I decided this class wasnt going to tank my GPA. You can do well in this class, but be prepared to grind for 4 months straight.
This class is doable but requires a lot of studying and memorization like all o chem classes do. He makes class unnecessarily stressful with incredibly hard exams that he ends up curving multiple letter grades. His class is an adjustment from the traditional lecture style, and you have to stay on top of the work. He talks a lot about his ex wife.
Never gave a professor a bad review but this man deserves 0. Khan Academy was my professor in this class. He curves tests up to 3 letter grades. This class is the literal definition of self-taught. This man deserves no credit for anything but endlessly frustrating us with motivational TED Talks every lecture and snapping at us when we ignore him.
Flipped-learning class. Online recordings were unfocused (lots of "I'll come back to this", then he doesn't). Most TAs were not helpful. He has to curve every test by at least 15 points or a good chunk of the class fails it.
Ended with over a 100 in the class even after throwing final. Find out which LAs were competent enough to teach the material. Trauma bonded with my groupmates, so choose them wisely. Midterms curved heavily = leniency on mistakes, not gaps in understanding. Frustrating but don't be discouraged, just do the best you can! Practice problems!!
His class was rough but doable (ochem 1). Tests were unreasonable at times but the extra credit he gave was a lot, so that helped. There was also a lot of extra credit on the daily quizzes (these were unreasonable in the beginning but got better).
Weirdo, constantly talks about his ex wife in a possessive and creepy way as if they're still together. Views his way of teaching as gods gift to education, but doesnt realize student-student practice COMES AFTER learning in the learning cycle. He just wants to do nothing as a professor. Begs students every semester to give good reviews and ecis.
Don't take this class. So hard and the lack of any lectures makes it even worse. Group work is fine, but that can't be everything. Especially when the textbook we have to rely on to learn is filled with errors, which leave you confused and trying to learn from students that are just as confused.
Honestly speaking, Dr. Straumanis was the best professor I've had at UT. Many people don't like the flipped teaching style, but if you actually practice through the workbook and ask questions in lecture, studying for the exams become a fun review. Lectures are great and his teaching style worked for me.
"Best professor ever" Yeah right. People who say that got a good grade so they think he's good. I got an A+ in both his classes, he is a horrible professor that is stuck in his ways. Useless TED talks (turns out he actually did TED talks in the past, no wonder). Lazy teaching method. Awful quizzes bring up tricks. Textbook filled with errors.
A fun review? His lectures (that dont exist) didnt work for you. You're just smart and got an A. None of that is relevant to whether he's a good professor or not, which he isn't. Again, I got an A+ on my own. It was me teaching myself because this horrible professor did nothing. Willing to bet that's what happened with you too.
I loved this course, but gave the bad reviews so that people that are in pre-med could avoid him i'll sink your grade if you don't have a group to study without. Just consult outside resources for practice and learn the concepts yourself. The textbook is just for him to make money honestly and its full of mistakes which is really frustrating.
he wont really teach, but the workbook got a bunch of practice problems. also gargantuan curve so just do better than the peers and you lock an A.
Ochem is a hard class in general but Dr. Straumanis makes a strong effort to provide you with everything you need to do succeed in his class. Although his class structure is different than traditional lecture based, if you get a good group and actively work each class by asking LAs questions you will get a good understanding of the content.
Straumanis was the worst professor I've ever had. I've taken other flipped classroom courses but none have been as extreme as this one. You're screwed without a good study group. He's not very encouraging, I cried every night and ended up dropping the class. Lots of extra credit, but that's because exam averages are so low. Quizzes are hard.
It's simple, if you: - can't work well with others/struggle asking for help - *dread* the moment a prof says "turn to ur neighbor..." Then don't take his class, u won't do well and will not learn much. If you take his class w/ friends its lowkey fun + i learned a lot, esp good study habits :) (i got a C in his ochem 1, comeback of the century)
This guy is not the most charismatic person... however, he is very knowledgeable about Ochem and learning it. If you are premed, he will FORCE you 2 build some good habits for later in the future. Yes his tests r difficult but the curves, extra credit + drops are plenty so as long as you do the work (about 5 hours per week lecture included) ur fine
Took Straummy for OC 1 & 2, and got an A for both with tons of room to spare on the final. I recommend getting ahead early and boosting your quiz scores with the ample extra credit he offers. Tests are pretty difficult, but he has so many resources to earn your A. Do the lecture notes, watch the review, do exercise questions, and study your rxns.
Some of the people writing here had an easy time because they can teach themselves ochem and/or understand things quickly, which not everyone can do (me included). Biggest tip if you're in the same boat: ASK FOR HELP! Find an LA who knows what they're doing, especially if they also struggled in the course when they took it, and make some friends.
He is a nice guy who def wants you to pass, but I feel as if the exams this year were MUCH harder than Spring 2023 which was annoying,
This class was fine- quizzes every class were quite annoying and a major source of stress but Straumanis had a policy to compensate for low quiz scores, and MT2 had a HUGE curve. Final exam was weird, first exam was fair. Felt REALLY hard to learn with lack of explanations and practice but Ellie is the best TA!
Ngl I'm rly surprised by all the hate he's getting, most of these gotta be trolls. I thought his flipped classroom style rly benefitted most ppl in the class. You just had to practice the workbook and the tests kinda follow. The class def doesn't benefit slackers. Straumanis genuinely cares abt the class and wants ppl to succeed and that's rare.
Straumanis is probably the best professor I've had at UT. His lectures are very detailed if you're listening, and the book is easy-to-follow and extremely relevant to the MCAT. His "TED talks" are inspirational and have made me a better woman both inside and outside the classroom. Highly recommend him
Surprisingly, Dr. Straumanis made me love organic chemistry. Yes, this class is very challenging, but there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. As someone who is studying for the MCAT (and a non-premed major), I can confidently say that his class has given me a VERY strong foundation in chemistry & medicine and is extremely applicable.
Dr Straumanis lectured very little during classes. However, due to the flipped learning of the course and the in-depth material he provided, I always felt prepared for the daily quizzes and midterm exams. He was great about explaining questions on quizzes that stumped the class and also held work sessions numerous times a week.
This professor acts like he cares, but much of what he shares is really just gaslighting students by trying to establish his credibility by flaunting his grade distributions. His TA's apparently do not listen to him, and he claims to try to remedy that but to no avail. My grades on previously completed quizzes and exams frequently lowered due toTA
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! Unless you like a flipped classroom, then this isn't for you. He NEVER lectures, his classrooms are basically just and hour half of office hours with 60 TAs. There are daily quizzes that are insanely challenging after giving us a packet to teach ourselves the topics. STAY AWAY, STAY AWAY, STAY AWAY, STAY AWAY, STAY AWAY!!!
His style of lectures is terrible. Barely lectures and does not provide good resources to learn material sufficient enough to do well on exams. Exams were the hardest I've taken through college. There was a quiz EVERY lecture and were so difficult which can easily lower your grade as well. Take someone else for O chem.
Dr. Straumanis is not a professor for everyone. You have to be able to teach yourself the material and take the time to understand your mistakes. If you do not like learning by yourself but like being taught everything in lecture stay away from this class. I have 107 and haven't put the craziest effort in the class. The class isnt impossible!
This class is difficult for sure, but it's O Chem. You can definitely earn an A if you put in the time. He also gives lots of past resources to practice with.
Teaching style is good for hands-on, don't like lecture kinda people. You work in groups (that you choose), so I would highly recommend sign up for the same time as people you know or get ready to meet people. GO TO WORK SESSIONS! You can find people to study or be in a group with, plus you get extra credit for doing your homework here with help.
Make friends with an LA - taught me everything. So much EC (40+ pts) on exams, so all you have to do is be better than everyone else. Study for quizzes in class, most people don't, so if you get better than most people, you're set. Find a good group, everything is group work. It's ochem; it's gonna be hard, but just learn the game and it's doable.
He DOESN'T lecture in class and bonus points are built into IMPOSSIBLE tests. He says that he'll help his students but NEVER makes the changes to aid us. He is more concerned with how his students do in other classes than helping them in HIS class. He is by far the worst professor I've taken ever. Save your mental health and gpa by not taking him.
Despite other people's criticism of Dr. Straumanis' teaching style, I can confidently say his flipped classroom has made me put in more work to truly understand o-chem. While exams are tough, he gives a generous curve most of the time and if you do better than the rest of the class, you'll get bonus. Quizzes daily so stay on top of it.
Ochem is hard and u have to be ready to put in the work. But if you stay on top of the work and prep before every quiz it shouldn't be too bad. Ppl expecting and A served on silver platter. Tests have big curve + extra credit built in exam.
Straumanis cares about his students and gives them countless methods to succeed in his class. This class was the first time I genuinely had no stress going into the exams, since I knew that I could miss some questions and still get above a 100. Ochem is hard, however, Straumanis gives you everything (and more!) that you need to conquer ochem.
Despite all of the bad reviews he gets, I can confidently say Straumanis is the best choice for ochem1. Ochem is objectively difficult, but putting in adequate time and effort will easily earn you an A. Insane curves on the tests (+30 on mine) and you only need a 90 to get an A. If you don't stay on top of the content you won't do well. Take him!!!
Straumanis' curves are some of the craziest in UT Ochem. If you're used to teaching/reviewing by yourself, you'll probably be fine in this class. Quiz during beginning of each lecture (not worth alot) and preactivities of the next unit due before the lecture (not worth alot). Each exam/final curved 20%.
his class was a lot better than I had expected, his curves are so insane! he gives many opportunities to get an A in his course even if you start the semester off poorly. his work sessions are super helpful and a great way to ask questions. i enjoyed his class!
Ochem is an inherently hard class, but Straummy's course is a million times better than that of Hsu or other profs. Ochem is still hair-tearingly difficult, you actually have a fighting chance here where other profs have slaughterhouses; Straumanis has lots of EC, bonus opportunities, and doable exams (on which he will boost your grade by 20 pts).
Ochem is really hard, and this class is no exception. Straumanis doesn't spoon feed you answers, which I appreciate, and when you do understand things, you understand them well. However, he gives you very little to start out with, and relies on an army of TAs, some of whom don't seem to know much more than I do. Curve goes crazy.
I'm sure staumanis isn't anyone's first choice so here's my advice if you're stuck with him. prepare to spend around 5 hours a week. go to a work session before every quiz. figure out how to learn by yourself. if you can spend a lot of time on this class you should be fine. i wouldn't recommend taking him with other difficult classes though.
Highly recommend! His flipped classroom isn't as bad as it seems. He obviously wants everyone to get an A but also LEARN chemistry. He has SO MANY RESOURCES for studying. It starts off easy but picks up rapidly in the middle so be prepared. Its a really difficult class but theres lots of opportunity to raise your grade EVEN if you fall behind.
Probably the most condescending and out of touch professor I have ever had. Actively takes digs at other professors who are much more qualified to be here at UT than he is.
All I know is he invented curved arrows. Yipee. After experiencing so many profs at UT I realized that you don't have to make a class hard, or berate your students, which is something that he does. He is not with the times and roasts you for no reason. When there are other amazing ochem profs I have no idea why you would take him.
Prepare to spend lots of time on this class. Quizzes every class, self-taught content via worksheets, etc. Even though it is hard, it is very do-able to do well with all the resources he provides (practice quizzes/exams, several weekly work sessions, recorded lectures, and EdDiscussion). He also gives LOTS of extra credit.
This class is tough but A LOT OF resources were given for students to succeed. 90 and above is an A. ECs built into exams and bonus questions on quizzes. If you can't study on your own and would prefer for the prof to explain step by step, this class is not for you. Las and Tas are helpful! Would recommend :)
This class is honestly not too bad if you're willing to put in the work. Do something for ochem everyday so its repetitive and you think about it frequently. Pay attention to the quizzes, especially the bonus. If you go to study sessions the LAs can give helpful tips that can come in handy. Do what he tells you and ochem can be approachable.
I was really scared about ochem but this class made it seem not so bad! You have to be proactive about your learning and HAVE to attend work sessions and ask questions. Exams have loads of bonus points and he curves generously. Dr. S is not the most approachable to ask questions but his TAs and LAs are super helpful and never judge.
why sigmaunis is awesome: curves his tests a lot leaves his old crusty wife for a younger baddie rides his bike to class (healthy)
Not my fav but tbh he's not that bad. Curve is very generous. He doesn't really lecture in the traditional way so be ready to learn in a group and ask TAs (or him) questions. Book has some errors but nothing too bad. don't expect it to be easy and then blame the prof if you can't get an A like everyone does here. If 1 gets an A all can get an A.
Real talk, he's not for me but he's not the worst. He is big into learning through practice which just did not work for me, but if it works for you, he'll be good for you. Doesn't really lecture that often. Lots of TAs and other people to help you, plus he makes people form groups. Heavy curves (like 20ish points)
I don't think I've ever wished more ill will on a professor than I have with this guy. Most fake and disingenuous prof I've ever had. Acts like he cares whilst also dismissing student concerns, coming across as two faced
I went into this class scared because of his rate my professor. Though I'm not too fond of flipped classrooms (I prefer lecture-style teaching), I admit that this teaching method helped me learn ochem thoroughly. He is a nice person and he is passionate about ochem. I'm actually glad I ended up with Straumanis for ochem, he's not bad at all.
Straumanis has this grand delusion that students can teach themselves O-Chem. Trying to understand the content from a textbook riddled with errors, and relying on the help of group members and LAs who are in the same boat as you doesn't help. People "do well" because the curves are insane, and the grades are over inflated. Definitely an experience!
Though flipped classroom is unpopular, I think it works for more people than you'd expect. A huge percent of his As come from grade inflation, but if you put in the work and go to work sessions, you'll be fine. Ask questions literally every single time you're confused; otherwise, you won't build the foundation required to succeed in the class.
Though the exams are very difficult, he gives you an incredibly fair shot of succeeding in his class with the amount of extra credit he gives. You can also tell he cares about his students by the resources he provides and the talks he gives. If you put in enough effort, you should be totally fine in the class.
For next semester he should consider curving the quiz avg grade. In class he told us to treat them as diagnostic and that they won't affect our grade, but they brought my grade down a letter bc it weighs the same as an exam. The quizzes are 5 minutes long and at start of class, and if ur like me you don't fully get the lesson until after class :(
He's alright, not the best but no the worst. I'm 50/50 on the flipped classroom. I just wish he lectured more in class instead of just sending us to work on the textbook straight away. His exams are curved. I never really asked straummy questions because I've heard he's condescending, but the LA's are the best. Going to work sessions kinda saved me
This class was hard but not as bad as I expected. If you are someone who learns best through practical application and independent learning, then you will enjoy this class. If you prefer learning through lectures and step-by-step explanations, then you may struggle a bit. My best advice would be to analyze your mistakes and ask lots of questions!
There is a lot of hate about Straumanis and his class. But what is not discussed is how many resources he gives and how helpful his team is. Ochem is an insanely hard class and even harder to teach yourself. He changed grades for an A to be a 90 and was VERY generous with extra credit. He tries to give you an A and if you try you will be okay.
Excellent professor who really cares about his students. Do all exercises and study well for each quiz and you'll do fine. There's a lot of extra credit opportunities and curves heavily on exams. He took the best of our midterms and lowered the grading scale to give everyone higher letter grades. Tons of TA's and work sessions if you need help!
i think flipped classroom is effective when done properly; straumanis does not do that. if you don't have time to go to work sessions or other office hours, you won't learn anything. he does give a lot of extra credit, however, i don't think it compensates for his lack of teaching in class. daily quizzes are annoying and so are the tests
Straumanis was grades-wise one of the most accommodating professors I've had. The exams were tough, but daily quizzes helped catch mistakes. LOTS of bonus points, drops, and great LAs. I enjoy learning from practice problems so I liked the class and content stuck, but I wish he had summary lectures during class instead of just in work sessions.
He didn't really teach the class, lots of youtube and workbook teaching you, but heavily curves and adds bonus points so I was never stressed about my grades, added 20 points to each test and 40 points on the second test...don't know if that reflects poorly on his teaching but he adds a large buffer, just be better than average.
If you are taking other difficult courses at the same time it is hard to keep up with the content. Take Straumanis if this will be your hardest class in the semester because I do think the flipped classroom does help you really understand organic chemistry. TAs were very helpful also but quizzes were very annoying and difficult.
The class is hard, but Straumanis really cares about his students. The class is flipped and there are learning activities before each lecture, daily quizzes in class, along with 2 exams and a final. They are difficult, but everything is curved A LOT, and there are plenty of office hours with TAs/LAs to get help. Not as scary as people made it seem.
As a professor he can't explain to save his life. But he gives a bunch of extra credit. Midterms 1&2 were fine, and he posts past tests. The final was mentally scarring. We had no idea what we were going into and basically everyone failed. If you need someone to explain the concepts to you DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you can self study you're set.
While guided inquiry style learning is more work, it helps you develop a solid conceptual understanding of ochem. Treat the daily quizzes as diagnostics. Exams can be tough but are curved 20-30 points each. Figure out how you learn best, and this class can be very rewarding. He cares about the class and makes it very possible to do well.
Straumanis isn't a bad professor at all, but the course is almost entirely self-learning. Exam 1 was okay, but the 2nd one was pure evil. Exam 2 & the final were curved 30+ points bc most people fail. If you're pre-med and want to understand ochem deeply for the MCAT, this class is great for that! If you're not pre-med and lazy like me, AVOID him.
I love this man. If you want lots of good practice and you want to actually KNOW how things work in ochem, he is amazing. He was super lenient this semester on grades, dropping the cut off, having three options to get an A, and insane curves. One thing: you can't slack off in this class. Every class matters!
If you take him, just know that you're going to teach yourself everything. This worked fine for me, but I know people who did not have a great time. He curves a ton because the averages are horrible. There are daily quizzes, but you get used to them pretty quickly because they are not super high stakes. Big tip: study the exams from previous years!
survivable, saved by extra credit. study a lot and do as much practice as possible. for transformations, dont bother w all the diff flashcards, only for memorizing what changes between steps. use other professors summaries and notes.
If you don't mesh well with flipped classrooms don't take this class. Get in a good group, treat every quiz like a test, and stay on top of work. The curve at the end is very nice but there is little to no instruction done in class. Go to the learning sessions at least once a week and you'll be fine.
He makes the tests quite difficult but there is an immense curve on everything. He made me really enjoy learning during class because it was a lot of group work instead of lecture (this is a controversial opinion but my attention span isn't that long so it was beneficial to me). The quizzes helped a lot. Go to work sessions.
Dr. Straumanis' flipped classroom is a very difficult but effective way at learning ochem. I did not particularly like it, but his 20% curve on each test and final was clutch. This class requires A LOT of out of the classroom time and focus. Do not take him if you do not love chemistry. The flipped classroom can be an extreme pain.
No lectures, learn through CAs & exercises. Deeply understand content because topics build upon one another. DON'T get behind. Quizzes each class are annoying, but help you keep up w/ content. Ask the TAs any questions you have in class. Exams are hard, but there's TONS of curve. He is very approachable & truly wants you to succeed. Def recommend.
For ochem, this class was not that bad. He changes the grading criteria to better your grade, and there are extra credit opportunities. I wish I would have studied more everyday, as there is a lot of memorization. Come to class for the quizzes, but afterwards you basically do whatever you want.
unique teaching style that is hard to acclimate to.make friends in this class and make plans to study outside of class and you'll pass.definitely attend work session(office hours) its how I passed each quiz.the la's and ta's are your friends and are so willing to help, befriend them and ask a lot of questions.i suggest doing activity the day before
I could not recommend him enough, truly one of the best professors I've had. He truly cares about his students success & it shows. Quizzes are annoying but they're SO helpful and he gives a ton of extra credit. Exams were difficult but o-chem is hard anywhere. Go to class, ask questions, keep up with material, you have an A.
Straumommy was like my second mother. So caring and cares about our learning. Straumommy backs up the class structure with research. Did you guys know that students who take 320M with Straumommy go on to do better in other professors who teach 320N than those who did not have Straumommy?Straumommy makes his class structure data driven!
Straumommy changed me. He made me explore ochem in a way I didn't know was possible. He was an inspiration—my group and I craved every drop of his knowledge juice. The classroom was flipped, but only because if he taught, we'd master ochem 1 and 2 in weeks.
Everyone hates on Straumanis but he is really not bad. Flipped classroom sucks, ochem sucks, but he tries to get as many people as possible A's. He does a multiplier curve so you will always be curved up. He also changed the entire grading structure last semester so an A was a 90. His LA system is great and there is always someone there to help you
My glorious ochem monarch Straumommy is the ultimate aura farmer. No one comes close, not even sung jin woo or gojo.
Where do I start? DO NOT take this professor. He gives too much extra credit. It is way too easy to learn in his class and ask questions, and this is shown by the exams. I can't believe I have never gotten less than a 100 on his exam, and it's terrible. STAY AWAY. Additionally, his aura is way too much for me to fathom.
Make instapoll font size bigger
Better than Iverson
lowkey lit
the goat. If you attend the work sessions, don't cheat on quizzes, and actually do the activities and exercises legit you will 100% get an A. It doesn't matter the abundance of extra credit he gives; if you are pre-med and don't have the self-discipline to actually study, then drop being pre-med, it isn't work. He's goated, I actually learned alot.
I transferred from Callmann second semester and now I wish I took him last semester. His quizzes can be annoying to study for all the time, but it made that week of the exam so much easier &less stressful. Allows you to understand the nitty gritty stuff that week. I would suggest every freshman take him. Genuinely!
Really HOT LAs, makes it hard to pay attention in class, otherwise would def recommend. Throatmanus
I know that Straumanis gets a bad rap in general, and I'm not sure if he changed recently but he is genuinely the most understanding professor I will ever have at UT Austin. He is so easy to approach and rewards real effort with the extra credit near the semester. If you do the basic CTQ and some of the exercise an A is easier than any other prof.
meow meow meow meowmeowmeowmeow meow meow. meow meowmemwom meow, meow meow meow. MREOW
People are WAY too dramatic about this class being "awful" and "impossible". The truth is: the people who say that do not put in effort consistently. This class is manageable. Quizzes are not unfair, they keep you accountable for your work. Every exam is curved 20-30 points. This class is hard because OChem is just hard, Straumanis isn't the issue.
Straumanis is one of the best professors I've had at UT. He provides adequate course material to learn the content, the pacing of the course is good, and there are many extra credit opportunities. I wish I had taken him for Ochem 1. If you can, take Straumanis!
Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Dr. Straumanis. honey, my pookie bear. I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. The way you drive into the paint and strike fear into your enemies eyes. Your silky smooth touch around the rim, and that gorgeous jumpshot. I would do anything for you. I wish it were possible to freeze time
He is so kind and makes many adjustments to the course for the success of students. If students struggle in this class, they probably have a hard time with the flipped classroom model.
Great professor. Flipped classroom is the best way to learn things like this.
I love Straumanis! He genuinely cares about his students. Concepts may be challenging at first, but he provides lots of resources (past quizzes/exams, extra practice problems) to ensure we learn them. If you are self-motivated and keep up with the CAs and quizzes, you will gain a strong understanding of ochem and get an A (or 100+) in the course.
THE STRAUMANIS SLANDER MUST BE STOPPED! The flipped classroom and daily quizzes suck, but this "sink or swim" approach means you actually have to learn the material instead of just sitting in lectures watching a professor draw curved arrows. OChem is painful, but no pain no gain right? also the amount of extra credit he gives out is actually nuts.
Straumommy clutches up at the end of the semester fr. Slayful queen of resonance structures. Bro is not traumanis, he's sigmanis. LAs have w rizz.
LORD of the Alkoxides! Dr. Straumommy really cares about his children! Gigachad LA's. W people fr! You will fall in love with all of them ;)
great taste in LAs
Lots of hate for him in the past but honestly hes solid. Lots of extra credit, if you try even a little you will likely end up with A and a solid understnding of ochem2. Flipped classroom annoying but honestly his workbook and LAs are quite effective in teaching and understanding the content. Recommend wholeheartedly.
helped me 🍇 my midterms and ace them!
The honest truth about Dr. Straumanis is that he is a very caring professor, after the first midterm the class started to get a lot easier. Overall, most of the negative comments are mostly likely from bratty pre-meds who don't want to ruin their 4.0. Jokes aside, I heard from diff sources that Iverson goons to CaseOh, so take him at your own risk.
Notice how all the hate comes from the chuzz (chopped huzz) and not the fyne shytz (me n gng).
I could write an essay on having Straumanis for orgo1 and 2. Genuinely the best professor I've ever had and have never gained so much knowledge on a subject than I have in this class. You have to put in time and effort while staying consistent, but that applies to any orgo class. Don't listen to the bad reviews; take him and you wont regret it!!!!
he cares about everyone. incredible professor and group of TAs always there to help you. so much extra credit. if you apply yourself, you will make an A. he responds to emails despite having upwards of 700 students. do not listen to the bad reviews. made me love organic
he cares so deeply about all of his students and totally changed my way of thinking. forever grateful i was in his class for 2 semesters and have nothing but great things to say about him. his style of teaching made me not afraid to ask questions and i feel so much more prepared for my future tough classes.
He is the only professor that I've seen go to such great lengths for every students. You can't fail with him as your professor because he makes so many accommodations and wants everyone to succeed. It breaks my heart hearing people speak poorly of him because he's the one professor I would go to bat for, and I know he would do the same for anyone.
The only people who dislike him are lazy pre-meds who have no business even trying to go to med school. He gives every student opportunity after opportunity to not only pass but to get an A. Don't be a sheep and listen to the lowlifes who don't have enough discipline to put in any work. If you put in some effort, Straumanis will not let you fail.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. OF COURSE IT'S HARD IT'S OCHEM. STOP BEING A LAZY AND LOCK TF IN. HE DOES EVERYTHING FOR HIS STUDENTS AND TREATS EVERYONE WITH RESPECT AND KINDNESS HE GIVES CHANCE AFTER CHANCE FOR EVERYONE TO GET AN A. THE PEOPLE WHO LEFT BAD REVIEW ARE UNGRATEFUL low lives who don't deserve his kindness.
"Glock to your head name me ONE o chem professor better than straumanis" Just slime me out already gng
He genuinely cares so much for his students and wants them to succeed. The only way to learn ochem is by practicing and the class is structured around that! It's better than wasting time hearing lecture then spending even more time on your own practicing. Stay on top of CAs and exercises and you are guaranteed to get an A with how much he curves
Dr. Straumanis is one of the best professors I have had since being at UT. He genuinely cares for his students and gives them SOOOOO MANY opportunities to get an A in this course. As long as you study and keep up with your assignments, you should get an A. He and his LA's are amazing and make learning ochem so much better and less stressful.
Straumanis the goat I don't care. He genuinely wants to help you succeed by challenging you, and the flipped class actually forces you to stay on top of your work. And he gives a massive curve on his midterms! Ochem 2 is a breeze to me because of him.
Dropped Iverson for this man. Best decision ever.
If you want to actually learn ochem, take Straumanis. The class is extremely difficult, but you WILL know ochem better than most of your peers in the end. 2 exams and a final that are heavily weighted, but curved (extremely). If you do CAs, exercises, and ask LAs questions, you will get an A in the course. Took him for org I and II w/ an A in both.
This is the first class in college where you actually have to learn how to problem solve and not just memorize random things to get an A. It radically changed the way I view learning for the better and for that, I am grateful. I understand why some people dislike this teaching style but i wouldn't be so harsh on him. He's doing the hard owrk
I was very scared coming into this class because of the horror stories I heard, but this class ended up being one of my favorite classes here at UT. I have learned so much, and it made me like science again bc before this I felt like I was just memorizing things. If you want to learn, TAKE THIS CLASS. Work hard, study hard, and you will be fine!
Straummy gets a bad rep (b/c ochem is HARD) but genuinely cares. Although I'm not pre-med, it was nice that he emphasized MCAT-related topics. Exam- and daily quiz-heavy, but with lots of EC (he replaced both midterm grades w/ the final if helpful). Do the workbook problems and study for quizzes (will really help your avg)—you'll be totally fine.
Nothing new to say here, but Dr. Straumanis is really good. Class is highkey grade inflated and I think being hot is a selection criterion for being an LA.
SUCH a rewarding class. Ochem is tough, and the flipped classroom takes some getting used to, but Dr. S is definitely onto something with his learning approach. If you make an effort to keep up with the material and take the time to do all CAs/exercises, you'll do fine. Would 1000% take this class again!!!
I just love this man 🥹
Sweet and smart professor, not a good teacher. You will become Benjamin Franklin with the way you have to teach yourself. He does offer lots of ways to make up for bad grades. He has had to curve every exam as well as the final. He has an assignment due before every class, quizzes every class, and in Instapoll in class.
I love Straumanis! He's genuine, fun to talk to, and treats students like humans. Yes, his class is hard: its organic chemistry lol. His tests are fair, and if you work at it and try to understand, you will 100% pass. TAKE HIM!
I'm not exaggerating when I say that the stress of his class caused severe physical illness. Took 320M with him- difficult but manageable. He ineffectually organizes both courses differently from every other prof, 320N is too dense to properly teach his way. He passes ppl through w his curves and you don't learn much. Will cost your soul
One of the most polarizing profs at UT, but if you buy into his method, you'll learn Ochem better than with anyone else and be ready for the MCAT! It's most effective for Ochem 1, but still your best bet for 2. It's a shame he has to pander with grade inflation for approval just because his method so dividing, but most appreciate the boost.
Hated this class. He wastes time when he should be lecturing and was incredibly condescending. Daily quizzes got exhausting and having to teach myself everything using his textbook was a massive waste of time. His book is full of typos and errors and feels super jumpy, making it hard to follow. He's also super sneaky about how he curves. Weird.
Dr. Straumanis will do a lot to help you get an A, all you need to do is put in the work.
Flipped classroom, meaning lots of work outside of the actual classroom. Classes consist of a quiz, him lecturing for 10 minutes, and then hundreds of people all talking in an echoey room after that, making it not a good learning environment. He gives super generous curves, so if you know what you're doing you can get like a 120% overall grade lol
Lowkey my fav, but hardest class at UT
Dr. Straumanis does a lot to help you get an A. As long as you put in the work and don't get behind you will succeed in his class
I hate this dude. Praying that I don't have to retake it with this guy. Hardest class I've ever taken and the only class I've ever failed. I literally hate Straummy Mommy.
Most horrendous professor ever, does not teach anything, leaves students that do not know much more confused
there's a ton of resources and extra credit to succeed in his class. but it's also flipped classroom which means if you don't want to teach yourself ochem, plz don't take him. textbook answer keys, OH, and ed discussion will be your best friend in this class. also there's daily quizzes. ngl tho straummy was pretty iconic, in a traumatizing way.
Straum probably cares about his students but his flipped classroom approach only works for
O-Chem II was much easier after having him for O-Chem I. While he's very nice and engaging, he's really nothing more than a warm body in the class. However, he cares enough to ensure every student excels and can get an A. Insane curves make up for teaching yourself everything. So many LAs and OH/WS to get help from! Good guy? Yes. Professor? Iffy.
The “trauma” in Straumanis should have been enough of a warning. The class would have been ok if he actually taught. Review lectures didn't go into the depth that his tests demand.
I really didn't like the way he did flipped classroom, having us work out of his pink book during the course time and only giving a brief lecture at the start of each class. His grading scale is incredibly lenient, but that means I got a decent grade in the course without learning much ochem...
His class is more work, but you will have a deeper understanding of ochem. Treat his daily quizzes as diagnostics. His massive exam curves (30+ points) ensure A's to students who know even just some of the content. The biggest challenge in this course is finding a competent LA. Learned a lot of chemistry without once stressing about this course.
The hate is so forced for Dr. Straumanis!!! O-chem is so difficult for any professor, but Straumy tries his very best to make the content digestible. I think inquiry-based learning is a great way to get a grasp on the subject, you just really need to set aside the time for it and never (EVER) brain-dump.
I think Dr.Straumanis is a decent person but if you are looking to learn ochem and have a easier time, take someone else. I walked away with not much ochem knowledge and still a A because of his insane curves. He doesnt teach at all so you have to teach yourself everything and when you ask him a question he hits you with "What do you think".
Had Straumanis for both ochem 1& 2. Hes amazing! His class has a bad rep because ochem is tough. the way he structures his class really emphasizes LEARNING and applying over memorizing. If you put in the work, you WILL leave with an A as his exams are curved TWO LETTER GRADES!!! Ochem 2 w straumanis was my favorite class at UT. hes phenomonal :)
I really really struggled with the flipped class format. This class really took so much of my time. Near the end he gave a pity party for himself that made me hate him more. Worst ochem professor.
You'll learn if you put in the hours
Do NOT take this class if you don't absolutely excel in teaching yourself, asking questions, or learning in a group, because that is what you will be doing. If you have to work on the worksheets at home, good luck knowing if you're doing anything right. He's got his heart in the right place, but this class is made for a very certain type of person.
Straumanis is a nice guy but holy this class almost feels anti-learning and I might learn better from recorded lectures. You will be teaching yourself and if you have questions 9/10 times you're gonna get hit with a "what do you think". If you want to learn and have a good time, take someone else.
i love you straumanis but this class was really hard :(
If you are not willing to sell your soul and devote all of your no-longer existent spare time for this course, I'd recommend a different professor. The "flipped lecture" is just code for "I am not going to teach you anything and you are going to work out of a workbook most of the time and also have quizzes at the beginning of every class."
This class was extremely hard. Quizzes @ beginning of each class, and he makes them extremely tricky. Learning is all on your own, so you won't know about the "tricks" on the quiz until after he goes over it. You have to dedicate A LOT of time to this course in order to do well. Big curve on exams tho and lots of EC opportunities.
Great guy- but this class is so difficult with quizzes harder than years past- everything feels so unorganized and the explanations for exams are not useful so it's hard to learn from mistakes
DO NOT TAKE! The grade distribution is a lie; he inflates his class so that it appears that more people get an A. The exams are extremely hard (not reflective at all of the material in the workbook), material is ALL self-taught. Mandatory quizzes every class that are 24% percent of your grade. Take Page or Newberry if Iverson isn't open.
Exams are incredibly difficult, with curves built in, because they are not reflective of the self-taught material. Straumy doesn't teach anything and hits you with a "what do you think?" if you ask him a question. Half of the LAs don't know what they're doing, and the prof himself doesn't have office hours; they're all TA-led. Don't take.
This class is so hard and so not worth your time. He curves hella but even then averages suck. It is so hard to do well if you struggle to teach yourself (and his textbook tries to be fun but is not a great learning tool)
Honestly I think taking Straumanis is alright if the "flipped classroom" learning style works for you. The class itself is mostly self study and lectures are basically just dedicated textbook work hours. The daily quizzes are definitely annoying but as a method of benchmarking yourself theyre ok.
He might be chill dude, but absolutely an awful professor. He rarely teaches, what he does is letting immature LAs fooling around the classroom and answer questions from students, and I don' t think those LAs know what they are doing. We have a hard quiz every day which will demoralize you a lot which he is confused on explaining. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I'd rather drown in a kiddie pool then take this class again, straight misery. But the LA's are straight baddies.
If I could give any student one piece of advice, it would be to avoid straumanis' class at all cost!!! This class is awful!!! So so so many errors in his book and exams, and you will feel stupid and useless every second of this class. On the walk to class, I would pray to have something fall from the sky and hit me so I wouldn't have to go.
Challenging but even in such a large class clear that Straumanis cares deeply about helping his students learn and do well The flipped classroom does work if you stay on top of the things he suggests (recc: finish CAs before class) Don't talk while he is talking because it is super disrespectful Genuinely very nice guy (only spoke to him once)
Dr. Straumanis is awesome and is a genius. I am honestly not sure why he receives poor reviews. He is very motivating, and his workbook that he made is amazing. The class is different to your normal college course since it is flipped but I honestly enjoy it. He rewards hard work and has a great grade distribution due to his exam curves.
Scroll down and read some of the rating, the super positive ones are definitely written by him. He makes his class so hard, his grades are so inflated, you will feel terrible taking this class. Do NOT be fooled by his grade distribution and just think you'll be fine just because most people get an A. He plays mind games on mind games. DO NOT TAKE.
just dont him. you can put all the time in and still not do well, just take newberry
Ochem is obviously hard but his curves are so fire because it takes the stress of learning away. I bombed so many quizzes and have an A because the quizzes are designed to help you learn what you don't know, not punish you. Top 2 professor I've ever taken. The OH lecture style isn't for everyone, but it forces you to learn how to study (w help).
All of the negative reviews r from lazy bums bro, yea his exams are hard but his curves are SO generous & he truly wants his students to get an A which u guys take for granted. I wasn't stressed at all throughout this class and even tho it's flipped classroom, I was able to learn pretty well w the resources he provided
inspired me to become an ochem professor just to see for myself if ochem is really this hard to teach
Such difficult exams.
The curves are so generous there is little stress for what is supposed to be a traditional "weed-out" class. There's a lot of content, but you get to learn without constantly worrying about holding onto your grade. Loved this class, since it's clear Straumanis cares about reducing your stress.
All of the negative reviews truly baffle me. Straumanis is a great teacher who deeply cares about his students well-being. If you put in effort, you are likely to get an A (he designs the class so many people can earn A's). I am not naturally gifted in chemistry but his class made me feel like I can succeed by learning from my mistakes.
He spends so much time training his LA's so they all explain the content so well. Definitely recommend asking so many questions in class and staying caught up. Yes he doesn't lecture but the one on one LA instruction is so helpful. Ochem is my favorite class because of him, the extra credit is amazing !!!
Should be a psychologist not an ochem professor but gives so much extra credit if u don't get an A you're actually dumb. Only lecturing he does is about mental health but if you have a good LA you're totally fine
If you are someone that prefers learning from peers and problem-solving on your own, take Straumanis. He offers lots of wiggle room to get an A in the class including bonuses and curves as he clearly cares about his students. Use your resources and get help from the LAs!!
i wanna eat him 😍😍😍
Straumanis is so sweet! He cares about us in and out of class and doesn't want a letter grade to define your experience in the course. His curves are a lot and ochem is a hard class so the only ppl giving him a bad rating are the ppl doing bad.
cute doggy and pup. if you hate on him it's because you're failing
He should get rid of the curve. We need to bring back traditional weed out classes. The fall of the premed nation must happen.
Goofy ah put ur salad away and teach bruh always eating that damn salad. I hope it rains on ur bike ride home.
Bring back weed out classes. End massive curves and start limiting A's. End pre-med gradeflation!!!
Loves his salad a little too much. He aight tho.
This class uses workbooks, which some don't enjoy but personally it forced me to pay attention in class, unlike a boring lecture. His tests are very hard but the curves are so crazy that it doesn't matter if you do really bad (50% bonus on our second midterm). I wish he'd stop eating that stupid SpongeBob salad in front of my face everyday tho.
I think everyone over reacts when it comes to this class. ITS NOT THAT HARD. As long as you put in the work to understand. There are plenty of amazing resources such as the old tests and quizzes that's almost exactly like the ones he gives in class. He cares and gives so many opportunities for extra credit. I would take him again if I could.
so easy to get an A but the professor is literally so weird like ive never had a weirder interaction with a human being in my entire life. doesn't really lecture and the workbooks r not that helpful but you're like guaranteed to get an A. like if you don't im more impressed than anything.
I think people who complain about him don't know what a bad day is. He offers so much extra credit and tries his best to teach you a knowingly hard class. Tbh if you're not willing to lock in, ochem and med school might not be your path. Unfortunately this is college, its time to grow up and learn that you need to study and you need to work hard.
Hands down my favourite pre-med prerequisite. He made ochem far less scary than I thought it would be. The fact that he changed the grading scheme shows how much he cares for his students. That being said, don't take him unless you work best in a flipped-classroom setup. straumy slays the house boots down houston i'm deceased. very pookie-coded.
Accept the fact that Ochem is hard regardless of the professor. Dr. Straumanis will not stand up and lecture to you. Instead, his lectures are through his self guided textbook. I found that this was both the best and worst idea in the world. It was SUPER helpful to me and I loved it, but I also knew plenty of people who hated it. IMO can be easy A.
LOTS of extra credit/curves but you won't learn anything. Why am I being taught ochem by LAs that learned it 1-2 years ago. If you do the entire CA before class you should be fine but its frustrating to be teaching yourself while Straumanis is praised for curving an exam by 30+ points... Maybe if he taught there wouldn't be a need for a curve.
had to file a title ix the way these exams going
I get those goosebumps every time, yeah, you come around, yeah You ease my mind, you make everything feel fine
The class was hard but Straumanis makes it easy for students to get an A. Quizzes every class did take a toll on me, but I really learned from them.
Yo I love him as a guy but his textbook/class is god awful. Use another proven textbook and refer to his for class-specific things to memorize. Doesn't teach us in class for more than a few minutes, but thinks that he deserves a pass because he teaches his LAs etc. Overall a nice guy, good attitude, will definitely help but still take someone else.
You will lose your weekends, your breaks, and any free time if you want to do well at all in this class. Consider this the ultimate weed out class. He is not an easy A.
bro thinks he's L death note the amount of mind games he plays
gives tons of extra credit and curves are insanely huge, doesn't lecture tho - you have to teach yourself basically everything but there are tons of office hours, straum himself is a pretty nice dude and genuinely wants everyone to understand content / get an A
As someone who once left a 1 rating here, I'm coming back to say I went thru the content using a different textbook and suddenly his class is pretty easy. His textbook just really sucks since it kinda just asks you "what do you think?" and doesn't really tell you if you're right or not after and I hate having to ask TAs every time. Not bad overall
Easy to get an A as long as you do all the work he tells you to do.
IF u devote 200% of ur time, it can be possible to get an A. ochem will always be hard but the way straum teaches rlly emphasizes figuring it out urself. txtbook will give the basics but quiz/exam questions will require putting the puzzle pieces together urself, easier said than done. so yes it's possible to get an A BUT it's NOT a walk in the park
Dr. Straumanis is very understanding and a nice professor. His tests/quizzes are hard but he gives an ample amount of extra credit. Ochem is notoriously hard so it should be expected, but he makes it very possible to get above a 90% if you put in the work. Only thing I don't love is that his mini-lectures in class don't help very much.
Worst professor on campus - please believe the reviews. Instead of a lecture he talks about his ex wife and tells us to know concepts "but don't memorize it." His self-written textbook is filled with mistakes, 14 pages worth. Begged students to leave good ratings. He admitted to making the final exam impossible to get full points on the MC portion.
I WILL NOT STAND STRAUMANIS SLANDER! If you actually put in effort like you should with any class you WILL get an A+. He gives insane curves on all the tests (sometimes 30+ pts) so if you failed this class what are you even doing. The daily quizzes can be annoying but do the CA and past quizzes and you're set.
I liked this class! Dr. Straumanis is a really nice person and cares about you doing good. Just go to work sessions, and ask questions. You'll be fine. Lots of work but alsoooo big curves.
i am going to eat bodhi and no one can stop me
the G in Straumanis stands for greatness.
hate this guy so much, don't be fooled by the grade distribution but notice how he has so many controversial reviews. don't take him for your sanity literally any other professor is good
He literally admits you can't get a 100 on exams, from an annoucement: "This exam is designed to let you show me what you know. Most students will not be able to answer every question, but you don't need to answer every question to get a 100%" literally what.
still have his bicycle
filed a title ix for how bad these exams were getting me
If you thought seeing problems you've never seen before on the exam would be bad, try seeing problems and reaction agents you've never seen on the HOMEWORK. Literally he throws new information around and we're supposed to find out from the key like be so fr rn
It's a class you have to work for your grade, which is a big awakening compared to other classes "pre-med" or pre-healthcare students are used to. Tests are curved HARD, but problems aren't too bad (especially when provided with past exams), and the quizzes are very basic. If you put time into the class and ask questions, it's a breeze.
Exams are 70% But even if you don't get 100% correct on exam you still get a 100 average. I got 8/12 points on exam and ended up with above 100% for my grade. Daily quiz are quite hard and old practice quiz not representative. It frustrating that you learn everything on your own so when a subject is difficult its hard to learn. Some TA so unhelpful
holy fade wtf
love him, hate that he doesn't actually teach. free me
Just makes ochem so much more frustrating. The textbook focuses a lot on understanding the concepts but what we are actually tested is problem solving. Ochem is a problem solving oriented subject and thus a step by step guidance for problems is needed. Idk if this makes sense but its like learning biology and being tested on math
literally his workbook tells you "yea this is how its done" without telling you why or goes off on a tangent or some bs and then you get to the test and it's like explain down to every single electron why this happens and its like why can't you teach and test your subject in a way that makes sense jeez
whether or not u succeed rlly depends on ur learning style! his flipped classroom is great for some ppl/horrible 4 others. he does give insane curves to help u get an A BUT imo the stress of studying/taking an exam that he himself describes as rlly challenging can be frustrating even knowing a huge curve will be given.
My projected grade in the class was a 62 and I locked in the last few week for the final and what I realized was ochem isn't hard at all (if you think so you're dumb and not cut out for med school), Dr. S should really start teaching but otherwise he gives you all the support and material you could need. If you hate him you're just lazy, so lock in
Sad to see bum student reviews just hating ... yall realize youre affecting this mans career right. class is doable and fair n he clearly outlines how to succeed
straumommy makes it so hard for you to fail. Flipped class + pre-readings (~30min/week) force a regular practice rhythm and the mandatory groupwork + army of TAs make it so easy to get help. Mountains of EC opportunities too. If you put in the bare minimum you will do well. Never even spoke to the man but his book is that good. cute doggo too.
the review before me is lying. everyone knows his book sucks, is very barebones for what you need to know, and is full of errors. Yes he makes it hard to fail but if you're fully relying on his book and lectures you WILL struggle. I recommend Organic Chemistry as a Second Language by David Klein, it's what saved me in his class and made ochem fun
I don't really know how to rate him, because he does not teach or lecture. The TAs/LAs (and myself) taught me this entire course. If you talk to him one on one he explains things great- I really wish he lectured because he is a great educator. This class is not as bad as everyone says, just be ready to put in a LOT of work.
Never skip class, always do the work (past quizzes/tests + textbook), and you will do well. If you skip a day, it is very hard to come back from that. I def gained a deep understanding of the material... more so than people in other ochem classes. He also curves a LOT on the tests...like getting ~70% of the questions = score above 100
You have to have a certain style to do well in this class- self teach. He does not lecture. An hour and a half class, he'll talk max of 10 minutes. I didn't do well bc I personally rely on subjects to be taught by the prof too and he just didn't do that. LAs often didn't know how to answer questions
I had a 68% projected average and I reached out to him via email and he was very kind and helpful and I was able to finish the class off very strong. Yes he doesnt lecture the entire class but he does introduce the ideas at the start of class and gives you everything you need to be successful. If you don't do well, you're prob lazy asf (like I was)
Pretty easy to get an A in the class considering how heavy he curves. The material isn't bad, you learn a little bit new every lecture and do a lot of problems on it (and you don't even have to it's voluntary). The daily quizzes are fine, too. That said, his final was literally the hardest exam I took in my life.
Not as bad as people say he is, the curve is literally the best, just dont be mediocre about studying. I never did the CA's (theyre to much and too hard) and just studied the previous years quizzes and did fine on the daily quizzes, the just aim for 80 raw scores on the midterms and youll curve above what you need for an A in the long term.
Great prof. You will learn a lot if you try + will be rewarded with heavy curves on exams.
Good job strawdude, and good job to me
my goatttttt
Do not take this course unless you're prepared to self-teach. He "lectures" for 10-15 minutes and leaves the rest to the LAs. His textbook tells you how something happens but not why it happens, which creates a disconnect between the study material and the assessments as they're more problem-solving based, especially on the 2nd MT and final.
Success really depends on your learning style and how much time you're able to put into learning on your own. If you have a lot of time commitments outside of this class, it's more difficult because the textbook alone does not help you learn what you need for the exams. If you can self teach and have the time to, take Straumanis, if not then don't
studying for this class was like studying for a standardized test with the added help of work sessions and LA's. He doesn't really teach, but you won't get penalized for making mistakes.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ACTUALLY NEED SOMEONE TO TEACH YOU WILL HAVE TO LEARN EVERYTHING YOURSELF. i would say its ok if its any other class but since its ochem, you really need a good professor
He doesn't really lecture, and in class you just work on the CAs with others. If you're not good with flipped style classroom and group work like me I wouldn't recommend.
Class is dependent on learning style. If u can teach urself and have the discipline to study outside of class, take this class. There is so much EC and curves to get ur A while still understanding the concepts. Straum did lecture on occasion, and I can tell he wants us to do well. Still cant believe im paying tuition to teach myself ochem :\
Exams are really hard, but the curves are HUGE. Getting an A in this class is very manageable, and you will learn more than people in Iverson. Also, the classroom is flipped, which some people aren't a fan of. Personally, I think the format was excellent. Ochem is so dense that you'd need to go home and relearn the material after lectures anyway
I think the term flipped classroom is doing a lot of heavy lifting. He doesn't lecture at all, maybe 10-15 minutes most days. You really just have to teach yourself the material. He also doesn't curve much either. The curve is in the form of bonus points you have to earn on the exam, so it rewards people who are already doing well.
I find it so pointless to have a flipped classroom. He doesn't teach anything. Exams were hard but old exam practices were same format and curves were large. Don't take him if you're not already a genius that understands everything instantly.
quiz every day. sometimes he talks about "how to be successful in the course" (not helpful), while other days he talks about organic chemistry (helpful). The course uses a flipped classroom format, which took some adjustment, but he provides good materials outside of class to be successful. Exams have the hardest possible questions.
He doesn't teach so figure it out
he makes u buy his textbook and literally teach urself. the "flipped learning' environment doesnt work its so overstimulating to be in a room with 500 people talking at once and the LAs are a hit or miss.
Very doable to get an A if you prepare/practice how he recommends and not cheating on the daily quizzes will help you study for the midterms. He genuinely wants everyone to get an A without students sitting in a boring lecture.
he's the goat for the amount of extra credit he gives! the textbook is the cheat code, so spend time on it everyday for @ least two hours, in addition to taking the past quizzes and you're guaranteed to do well!
