This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had,including highschool.The teacher has MAJOR control issues.Assignments are very unclear,and classroom rules such as what you need to bring change without warning(Beware of losing participation).The assignments are easy, but his directions are very unclear,if you receive any.PS: he wont help you.

He is very interested in getting the class to think critically. Brings up issues that are relevant to today. You learn how to analyze articles and how to criticize them effectively. Gives a fair amount of homework. Two in class exams - easy! Just do what he asks for and you should get an "A."
He treats students like there still in highschool. His directions are not clear and he is hard to understand. He doesn't teach the right material because when I went into 60b the next semester with a really good teacher, I didn't learn what I was supposed too. He's a major pushover though.

He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He expects you to know what he's thinking and you always work in groups. Go the first day for the fun of it, then drop.
Class was a little tough. Essays are analyzed critically. The topic of, "Class"(social), is what all the essays and tests are based on. I found it to be pretty interesting to read and learn about. The only thing that bothered me was his comment that the "Chinese" work for a certain amount, as if the whole country does. That's like saying mexicans..
This teacher is the wost.you can hardly understand him. the WHOLE class is about Social class. no homework. a lot of useless article readings on class. there is also pointless group activites so he doesnt have to teach...dont take this class
The class I took with him would have been great as a current events class or an economics class, but was useless as an English class. He seems to teach off of what he "feels" is right - he's unclear, inarticulate, and (unclearly) teaches an extremely ineffective way to write. I dropped out of pure dissatisfaction.
this guy sucks, period. he shouldn't be teaching at all anywhere, except maybe a 3rd world latin country where they coul d probably actually understand him. i hated his class it was a waste of my time. don't bother wasting your time!
Mr. Elizalde is not a bad professor. He really wants his students to think openly I guess-considering we talked about class the entire sem. You do have to be somewhat of a good writer to begin with to get a good grade. He isn't clear a lot but his guidance is offered. This class isn't easy. I worked my butt off but I got an A. Just be prepared

He teaches English at middle school level, at best. I shouldn't have to sit through three weeks on how to compose sentences and paragraphs in 1A. The reading material is interesting, but I'll agree with other raters that it belongs in a Sociology course. His accent isn't as thick as some suggest, but I'd still avoid him like the plague.

I had Mr. Elizalde for English 60B. I have to admit, at first I didn't understand his strategy and thought it was really pointless. However, halfway through the course it dawned on me what he was doing. His step by step process really helped me. I appreciate his teaching style and recommend him to everyone. :)
I dont know what all these bad reviews are saying????!! MR. E is great. He's a great teacher. He really get you thinking, and he cares about his students, you just need to put forth the effort. All these people giving him bad reviews are just lazy and want A handed down to them without doing a lick of work or thinking critically.
I just find it foolish that some people on here state that he shouldn't be allowed to be a teacher, yet here you guys are mispelling words. Oh the irony! Maybe you didn't like the class because you can't learn proper grammar. Smh
I loved this teacher! I really learned alot about writting better essays. I loved his teaching strategy. The class was super easy if you put some effort and did the homework.
THIS TEACHER WAS AVERAGE. HE WENT THROUGH LECTURES FAIRLY QUICKLY... TO THE POINT WHERE YOU DIDN'T LEARN AT TIMES. HE'S A HARD GRADER. HE'S NEVER SATISFIED WITH PAPERS. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND HIM AND HE'S NOT AN APPROACHABLE TEACHER.
This class is easy. I did not put in my best and still passed with a B. The work load is not that bad. I love this class because there were a lot of critical thinking in your essay. He doesn't give you the answer, he makes you think. He is extremely helpful. He is like a friend to me. Attendance and book are extremely important! No make up test!
Dedicate yourself. Read the book (Fast Food Nation) he breaks it up into chapters for the whole semester. Grammar portion he teaches a little confusing, so if you struggle just get tutoring. Grammar & reading quiz's are weeekly, basic as long as you follow whats he is teaching. He helps you with your writting, just ask! (:
Mr. E is a great teacher to have he always helping student with their problem in writing. The class very interesting. He grade fair, but you must put in all the work and complete the assignment on time. Also, be prepared to do a lot of writing in the class.

He had very good discussions in class however grammar was horrible. We didn't spend enough time reviewing,instead of learning essay formats,grammar we were watching videos of Fast Food Nation.Very informative but not necessary to know what chicken nuggets are made of. If you are not strong in grammar wouldn't recommend this class.
He is a hard grader and really does not help you when you need the help! His whole class is so repetitive that it gets really annoying after a while. I wouldn't recommend him, and I am glad I do not need to take a course with him again.. He is a nice guy, just not a good teacher.

you if you decide to take him for Eng IA. 1.read ahead and take great notes for the reading quiz. 2. Go to his office hours and get personal advice for your essay. 3.STOPPED BEING BIAS.Elizalde prepares a student for a four year. The books are very interesting which will prepare a student for real college essays. He's tuff but well worth it.
He absolutely unfair! You are a pass or no pass with grammar. DO NOT TAKE HIM! He doesn't clarify anything, asked him for help on essay and took his word on it being well written and gave me a bad grade. As well as reading quizzes, asked him for help gave me false research got no points. He just hated me!
hard teacher but worth it in the end. prepares you for college. must be dedicated to class. if you are ready to learn then take his class.
The class has a lot of work, and you can easily so get behind. But if you do everything that he asks for it can be easy.
He has good discussions. Well the students did and he let flow sometimes. But does not clarify or give good directions. He did not help with our essays at all. He did not give a clear guideline as to what is expected. We did not have any time to improve essays. Let us out early all the time though. Everything was mostly homework to do on your own.
Elizalde is very passionate about educating and is clear at explaining what he expects from an essay. He is always willing to help you with any writing assignment and gives great feedback when he grades. I definitely gained a new perspective on the educational system after having taken his class.
Extremely tough grader. I wouldn't take him again, or recommend anyone to take his classes. Grammar quizes are pass or fail. Iv never struggled in english like the way i did in this class. He's a nice guy but his grading methods are hard.
I went to all of his office hours for advice on my essays and he still gave me a bad grade even after I changed all of the things that he told me to change! He also gives a bunch of tests. If you get a C+ on his quizzestests he considers them as not passing and marks them down as F's.

Big on reading. Also assigns arounmd 4-5 essays that he grades tough on i got C's on 3 of them. but as long as you take notes and listen you should be good
Don't waist your time he is the worst !!! You can ask for help and go to his office hours but good luck if he even helps you. He is an arrogant person and he just assumed that we all knew what we were doing. I've asked for help but he just didn't take in consideration that many students were struggling. His lessons are hard ! he is very confusing !
Dont Take him, If you want to fail the class than take him. Beginning of the semester it was 35 student and the last day of the class only 12 left...

I have never worked so hard for a class in my entire education and all I got was a C. It was really frustrating and I would never take a class of his again. He would give me back my papers and would write his corrections so for our next paper I wouldn't make the same mistakes but no matter how good or bad it was i only ever got a C. Drove me crazy.
Horrible when it came to grading a paper; no matter how good you write or ask for help, he would always find something wrong to say about your paper. His approach at teaching grammar is confusing, as he would combine sections together. Prepare to work, and all for a C grade if you're lucky. I recommend you only take this guy if its your last resort
He is a terrible teacher I would never take this course again! Avoid him as much as possible. He assigns 5 essays including the midterm and he does not know how to properly teach grammar he is way to confusing. Easily the worst teacher ive ever had. If you want a semester of stressing out and working hard for no reason to get a C. Then sure take it

He is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't know how to grade or teach and he's extremely arrogant. He will confuse you with anything he teaches. DO NOT take this class
If you pay very close attention to what he wants in his 4 essays you will do great. His essays are what matters most in his class. I have learned a lot from him, but you can NOT miss one class. Missing one day in his class will set you back so far. You have to read have to read his books and take notes in order to get a good grade on the essays.
The workload is absolutely unimaginable in this class. He does not know how to teach well at all. He is absolutely the worst teacher i have ever had in any of my college courses. I would not suggest him at all. If you can't get into any other class besides his, then just wait for next semester to take his class.
Does not help at all with the vocabulary and not helpful at all. Lectures are useless. test are tricky so do the reading. Homework does not matter at all, because he does not grade them.
not a good professor. I had no choice but to take him during the spring semester and he was horrible. If you can choose another professor please do but if you have no choice than just be careful with Elizalde... I did 3-4 papers a semester and he does give you a chance to revise but its kind of hard.
He does a good job of mapping out the lessons and plans everything well. The course followed the syllabus precisely, so it was nice in that regard. Has you read a couple novels. Make sure you stay on top of reading. Theres always a quiz the next time you come back from class on the chapter you read for homework. Overall hes decent.
This professor is absolutely horrible and I hope he eventually gets let go from Norco College. Every class is expected to be tough but he blantently gives non passing grades and half the time isnt there during office hours for support. If hes your last option, WAIT until the next semester because hes the worst professor there.
The key ways to pass is to ASK questions. If you ask him what is going to be on the quizzes/ tests or what he wants to see on the essays he will straight up tell you. If you go to his office hours and ask for help he will basically baby you and give you all the answers. Also, take in depth note for the reading quizzes and you will pass.
If you read all these bad reviews and STILL take his class, you're beyond dumb.

The best teacher at Norco College
He was not the worst professor, but he definitely was not the best. A lot of reading in his class. Make sure you stay on top of your reading and homework because he will call you out in class about the material. He does care about his students.
DO NOT take English 1A with this professor. If its the only ENG 1A class available, wait until next semester. The workload of this class is over the top with essays. I spent more time at home working on essays from this class than all the homework from my three other classes combined. This is by far the worst class Ive taken throughout 2 years.
The English 1A Im taking with this professor is the most miserable experience of my time at college. The amount of writing this dude expects is out of control. Never take a class with this professor. Chances are youll drop it anyways along with more than half the class!!!
He is a tough grader, but he is very passionate about his work. He is very friendly and I really enjoyed his class. I actually wanted to take ENG1B with him too, but it wasn't available.
He's very passionate about his teaching and he cares for his students' well beings. That said ENG 1A is very work heavy with lots of readings, essays, and summaries almost every night. It's a lot but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad. Content was very interesting and he is very kind and helpful if you take advantage of office hours!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you will not learn English 1A, you will learn how to please the professor. This professor grades papers on key words, not quality of writing, does not know the difference between main ideas, supporting details, and textual subsections, If you do not follow his direct paragraph model your grade WILL SUFFER, take someone else!

This professor is crazy tough. We started the semester with 30+ students by the last 4 weeks there was only 10 left if that. I would AVOID taking him.
This professor is really nice but a tough grader, the quizzes are graded so harshly and he grades according to quantity not quality. The amount of work this professor expects u to do is crazy. Be ready to turn in 8+ paged summaries per week. Ive never worked this hard for a C in my life
Do NOT take this class! I have never had such a stress-inducing class. He definitely prefers quantity over quality with every assignment.
This person treats regular classes like honors classes, he does not give you enough time on quizzes and in-class essays, he causes lots of confusion on what to write on your essays, and he is completely unfair about the scores he gives you on summaries and essays, even with all the hard work you make, every score will only come out 75% or lower.
Horrible teacher, told me multiple times I got an A on my essay than gave me a c on the paper. Wouldnt answer questions clearly and wrote 5+ page essays every class
He is really nice professor if you show him you care about your work he will give you good credit he gives plenty of extra credit and he is a very tough grader but at the end if you dont drop the class he wont let you fail hes gives slot of work but he gives amazing lectures

Isn't clear on what he expects, encourages you to use the LRC after giving you a harsh grade on paper. They helped me fine tune a paper and I still got a C. When I told him I did what he said, went to the LRC, he then said to get a better tutor to review. Will not work with issues out of the class, even if they are medical issues. Stay away!!!!!!!
Lots of work and plenty essays. Reading quizzes are open notes so take lots of notes and you should be fine. Tough grader and has a weird way he wants you to write your essays but once you understand what he wants you should be ok
He is an extremely tough grader, and is unclear on what he expects from the essays. 2/3 of the class had dropped by the end of the semester. If you stick with his class till the end and continue doing the work, he will most likely give you the benefit of the doubt and pass you, but I would suggest not even taking his class in the first place.
The class is not hard but he gave me a D on a paper I knew shouldve been at least a C or B, answered the question throughout the essay and said I didnt answer it at all, he is nice but horrible at explaining and grading and he doesnt accept late work, even if its a few minutes late on canvas
This guy was a nice dude. But he was a horrible professor. Graded harshly, didnt give very clear instructions. Tells students their thesis/main idea is wrong. Hes more inclined to be lenient with your grade if you visit his office hours, which is kind of inconvenient and inconsiderate to people who work or have families.

Writing is my area that needs much improvement. this class was challenging for ME. two books to read throughout the semester and three essays. the labs are helpful for the essays. I used the online tutoring he requires three labs to be revised by a tutor. covered quorting, citing, paraphrasing, analyzing and evaluating. put in work get the grade.
He is a horrible grader. He would add comments to my assignments saying incomplete, incorrect, or ask me to elaborate further. He wouldn't say what information my answer was missing or what the correct answer was on question I got wrong. The questions he told me to elaborate on were already a paragraph long. This guy will never be satisfied
??? I literally have no idea what I do wrong ever. I'm in his online class at the moment and our first essay's highest score was a 73/100. Instead of emailing us acknowledging this or offering help or advice he 1. didn't acknowledge it and 2. gave us an assignment where we need to look at and critique our essays ourselves. Very horrible instructor.

Worst professor. No one passes with anything above a C. His quizzes are not even from the books. Made us do presentations and doesn't even give you any points for that which I thought was a waste of my time. Half of the class drop his class. Do not recommend.

He is a very harsh grader & would say he would give feedback but the feedback is "main idea is wrong" & would not elaborate. Went after class to ask about a LAB we did for an essay & I asked if what I wrote was good word for word & he said everything was correct & when I got my grade for the paper I got a C- after he told me everything was fine!

This guy taught me how to write!!! Wow talk about loving what you do. If you do the work and ask him to help he is willing. If you show that you want to learn and really do the work you can pass. I'm so greatful for a teacher like this don't let his tough exterior scare you he really wants his students to learn.
I was almost deterred from taking Elizaldes course due to the reviews on this site. However I stuck with it and got an A. This class is difficult by nature but if you do your work, don't procrastinate, and speak up you will do well. The lectures were very eye opening, I learned a lot from class discussions and even had fun arguing in my papers.
He's great! I was a horrible written before and now I'm so much better.
He needs to be more specific with what he asks of his students, he doesn't respond to your messages, and he expects you to magically know what to do.

Extremely tough grader and gives horrible, unclear feedback.
Ruined my GPA. He's a nice person but is terrible at grading; he grades drafts like they're finals and is extremely picky. Not to mention, the guidelines for some assignments aren't explicitly stated. Would not take again, I somehow have a better grade in calculus than this class.
He provides a lot of information for the assignments that isn't relevant and unnecessary. The feedback is very vague and doesn't really help you figure out what you need to do to improve.
This is an Online class. Timed and date specific Midterm Essay of 5 paragraphs in three hours. Lacks real feedback when asked a question. Expects you to search and struggle. Grades heavy. Stressful class environment. Gives a lot of information to read. Instruction jumps around. Cannot resubmit. You won't learn in this class. Lost, is the word here.
Took his class back in Spring 2024, the most stressful class I've had because I had no idea how to write an essay when starting the semester but I will say structuring an essay did become light work by the end, so I'm grateful to have taken his class. There are a lot of essays and assignments tho (even for a writing class it's a lot I've noticed).
He has high standards, but he does not explain these standards and gives vague advice. I was told by a tutor that this was a difficult professor, and his office hours are your best hope. However, once you get an idea of what you need to do to pass, it gets slightly easier. If you do take his class, he likes long paragraphs and even longer essays.
I slacked for one day and it all went downhill. He takes basic assignments very seriously. I worked incredibly hard on my midterm essay only to get a 53/100. I learned literally nothing. Prepare for a 15-page essay at the end of the semester plus another essay written in class the week after its due.
Inconsistent grading, he would suggest one thing then instantly disregard it after you submitted your paper. Additionally, made us write long essays about incredibly niche topics that no one in their right mind would genuinely care about. Absolutely mind numbing.
He's a tough grader. I felt overwhelmed
If you plan on taking this guy, expect nothing higher than a B. I scored the highest on every major essay, and ended with a B+. Expect multiple 2000-5000 word essays, and don't expect to gain any meaningful feedback from him. Also has many typos in canvas which is just funny from an english teacher, dude types in all caps 24/7 too, cringe asfk.
Way too harsh on grading and fails to elaborate what needs to be improved. 15 page essay and a final essay back to back (yikes!)
Miss one assignment, you'll be struggling for now on. Takes group discussions seriously, easy essays to extreme. He teaches nothing; not even a YouTube video about the course nor up to date examples, doesn't care if you need extra time if you are a slow tester, if you miss one step from what he demands, it's an automatic out of 12/25.
