His class seems more difficult than it actually is, this definantly is not a classs you can sleep through but I promise you will learn. He is very good with explaining and always welcomes you into his office if you need help understanding
great teacher, the first test is the hardest test. use lots of references on the paper and you'll get an A. don't talk or sleep in his class, expect to fail if you do. he's a nice guy too.
He is a slavedriver, for sure, but he sincerely wants to help you pass. I got a bunk grade on the 1st test, if you ask me, but he took the time to go over everything specifically to help you pass.
tijerina makes the class interesting. must be a good note taker and not mind writing cramps.
He is arrogant but he is smart. He gets very caught up in certain aspects of history, to the point where you only get through about 2/3 of Texas history. He is helpful when you go to his office and he does want you to pass. DON'T MISS 1 CLASS OR you will suffer really bad on his tests!
Fast-paced class, great lecturer, take good notes.Don't miss class-they move fast. Not an "easy A" but he helps you through it.
He is very passionate and makes the class very interesting. I found myself wanting to go to class. Taking lots of notes is vital to pass the course. Tests are hard but he tells you what to expext on every test. Overall, I liked the class and if you put enough effort you will get an A.
he is a wonderful teacher and really knows and cares about what he is teaching. He's kinda hard, and you will have to put in time outside of class. Very willing to help one-on-one.
Honestly, I was freaked out about his class at first. I hate history and the book was not easy to read. I went to his office hours before the first test, and he reviewed me for it. I ended up making a 96. SO, basically what I'm saying is... IF you go to his office hours, he will be more than willing to help you succeed. I ended up with an A!
Doctor T! Is the best teacher at ACC, seriously. He is willing to help with you one on one anytime! I always came to office hours and it helped me so much. I got an A. Make sure you take good notes and read the book. He even wrote me a rec for UT! He's awesome!
I took his online summer course for five and a half weeks. One of the HARDEST classes of my life! His grading system is extremely difficult. I am an A student with occasional B's. His test consisted approximately 90% of "all of the following, EXCEPT" questions. I would not recommend this online class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUYS CLASS ONLINE. He does not care about his online classes. I asked him for help and all he does is copy and paste from his online syllabus.
The best history professor I have ever had. Took both 1301 and 1302 and made A on both. Very helpful inside nad outside the class. Follow the procedure, read and it's an easy A. His lecture always inspired me. If you take him you will feel being in a safe hand.
Dr.Tijerina isn't the easiest professor, but no one can match his passion. He truly wants his students to do well and if you follow his system, you can make a good grade. His test are each 25 MC and 5 discussion questions(you now all of them ahead of time).
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR ONLINE. I have a 4.0, I'm a good student. In my experience, this professor does not respond to e-mails promptly and tries to hold you accountable for HIS mistakes. The grading is unfair in my opinion. I will HOPEFULLY finish with an A but it's NOT worth the pain inflicted.
wow just wow!!! awesome teacher, you have to take notes, study and ask him for help. Dr Tijerina is great wish i could take another class with him(i already took 2) Highly recommend
I took US History for the first time and wasn't expecting to like it much. But Dr. Tijrena is a great teacher, take notes throughout his lectures and study from his online study guide and you'll be flying through the course with an A!His classes aren't bring, I will def. taking another class with him!
Do not take his class online because he will not reply that fast. He is not helpful at all. The grading system is dumb. When you do his research papers he gives you topics that are very hard to write about. DO NOT TAKE FOR A DISTANCE LEARNING CLASS!
Upon reading his syllabus I felt he might be a bit full of himself. The kind of instructor who likes to make things more difficult than they need to be. He also wrote the history book you will use for the class which is riddled with typos and a leftest slant. Then I spoke to him on the phone and his condicending tone confirmed my initial thought.
Tijerina is great. I did not take him online but I can see how that might be frustrating as he does not respond to email a lot. He is always available during office hours and after class. He tells interesting stories, and he really makes you understand the big picture. Just do the work and it it's a breeze. He spells it out for you.
Though he was very up front about what he wanted from his students, I thought his DL class was greatly flawed. Once you check in for orientation, you're on your own. I may have spoken to him (maybe) three times the whole semester. Know what you're getting into!
This teacher makes the class so much harder than it has to be. He's rude. The teacher wrote a history book and no big surprise requires that along with a useless supplemental material as part of the class. I don't
Do not take this professor for any class that he teaches. He is incredibly rude and dispassionate towards his students. He cares even less about his online class, so whatever you do, DON'T TAKE IT ONLINE!! Overall he is a terrible professor and I would never recommend anyone take his class EVER!!
Pay attention, take notes, ask for help if you need it. He's available during office hours and really does want to see his students succeed. Do not be afraid to ask for clarification in class as he does go over material a little fast. Read the textbook. His tests are mostly taken from notes but you will get a better grade if you use the book.
Really passionate about history, no doubt about that. Be prepare for essays questions all the time. He wrote his own book. He definitely know his stuff. Tough professor.
Tests are EXTREMELY hard! I literately read the chapters and STILL had trouble testing! His tests are SO tricky! Do NOT take him!
This class was very straight forward. You will have 5 test over two-three chapters each. The test are multiple choice but only 30 questions for each test. If you are good at reading a chapter and retaining the information you will do great in the class. I had to type out each question from the study guide and review it that way.
This guy had to be the WORST college professor I have ever taken. He was not only rude, but did not teach as his 1 hour "lectures" included nothing but leftest racism and unimportant facts not related to the subject. If you ask for help be prepared to receive advice that has nothing to do with the course. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Took his online class, read the book front to back and still couldn't pass his tests. Incredibly rude.
Study guides have nothing to do with tests. When I emailed him for help, all he replied was: "try reading the book!" Extremely rude and no help. Says the only way to pass history is to buy his book. I have NEVER done so bad in a class, and I am a really good student. Completely messed up my 4.0 gpa. Do not take him.
this guy is terrible and a disgrace to military veterans I ask help hoping he knew where I came from since were both military didn't get much at all . do not take this guy at you will not do good in this class.
Good teacher, but don't read his book or buy any of his crap. It's a completely easy class. Didn't read his book or the book for my research paper, and passed with an A.
I'll be re-taking this class with a different professor and in a classroom. I've always been an A student but did so poorly in this class that I am going to have to re-take. If you ask him for help, 1. It will take a long time for him to get back to you and 2. he will just tell you to read the book. Take it from me, don't waste your time and money.
I would NOT reccomend this teacher. I asked him a few questions and he told me to DROP THE COURSE. How is that helpful? He should drop his career as a professor. Disrespectful, arrogant and requires that you buy HIS textbook that he wrote. Do not take his classes especially online!!!
i'm a airforce veteran when I heard he was one too I was ashamed he should not be a teacher I ask for help and even went to is office didn't get any help he material is not very clear in the classroom
This lecturer was so inspiring, the lectures are more like eye-opening and interesting. This was one of my favourite courses that I took. I highly recommend him and of course if you don't study you won't pass!
His textbook is so boring that you probably might want to take an addie before even attempting to read the first page of the chapter.
Tests are nothing like the study guide. If you can take this class with another professor DO IT. He is rude and arrogant and the furthest thing from helpful. Even reading the book cover to cover you will have difficulty with the tests. He writes the tests in a way to trick and confuse you, e.g. questions like "All are related to *blank* EXCEPT...".
On my way! the worst professor of my life! Definitely unhelpful and unfriendly! He treats students as kids! His tests are horrible and he gives attention for unimportant details I was respecting to have a great time when I decided to take history of Texas but I ended up having a nightmare! Do take this professor!
Very demanding. He is very picky about how you have to turn things in. Questions on test are really hard and he makes you write 5 small essays for each test which are extremely hard.
Studied the study guide and the tests are 100x more specific than the guide.
At first he's intimidating and seems like a tough professor since he writes his own textbook, however don't be. pay attention to his lectures and you should pass. He is very clear on what he is going to put in the exams. I would strongly recommend he always has a great attitude and will repeat if you have questions even if its right before the exam
Dr. Tijerina was awesome! Very clear instructions of what he wants. He has super great lectures and literally tells you as he lectures what's going to be on the test and what's going to be an essay questions on the test. Finished with a B (87), and that was only because I was in the hospital and couldn't study for a test, got a 50 on it.
The professor was very energetic and provided alternate perspectives on a lot of issues throughout history that I hadn't considered. The textbook is ridiculously boring, but it is brimming with information. The tests are hard, make-up tests are harder, but the essay questions are extremely easy if you attend the lectures. Overall a very fun course.
This professor has good content in his text book and his study guide is very accurate to what is in his book. However he does not have many outside sources for help and is not helpful when you email him. Ex. for the book report his syllabus says you need an 80% course average witch is not what it says on the report page.
I took his online distance learning class HIST 2301. There were roughly 200 pages of reading a week out of an aimless textbook. The tests covered hardly any important concepts, and the study guide was utterly misleading. Instead, they tested your ability to memorize random persons' names and other unimportant tidbits of information.
Online class. Definitely need to read the book and do the study guides!
hard to do well in the online class but not impossible. your book is your new best friend
Dr. Tijerina is one of the best professors I've had so far. His grading criteria is pretty clear and always makes sure everybody understands what is expected for the class. Lectures are packed with info, but don't rely too much on your notes to pass the class since he also expects you to know info from the book for tests and quizzes.
Dr. Tijerina is a distinguished historian and is very involved in the field of history at both the local and national level. Just google his name and you'll find a long list of his many honors. He makes you work for a good grade, but is inspiring, available, cares about his job, and cares about you. Best teacher I've had at ACC thus far.
I did not complete this class. To be fair I made a mistake and missed the first test. I emailed an apology (not a request to make it up). His email response was extremely rude, belittling and also inaccurate.
Although I was intimidated by him at first, Tijerina is very clear in his grading criteria. He is a very hardworking/intelligent individual. This class will almost certainly sharpen your study habits. Not an easy class by any means, but an A is attainable if you work for it. Challenging, but you will learn a lot & WILL come out a better student.
Great Professor! I feel privileged to have been able to learn from him. He really tries to teach you HOW to learn as opposed to just following a curriculum.
His syllabus is unclear and when you ask for help be prepared for more riddles as your answer. He has no sympathy for family emergencies and will not work with you if you need help.
8 week online history course. He sometimes replies slow. His grading criteria is weird. There are only 6 grades- 5 tests (reading 130+ every 10ish days) & 1 paper. I didn't do the report, but I talked to him and he bumped up my final grade because my tests were good. Nice guy. You don't need all the books he says, just the textbook is fine.
Be ready to READ!! Any questions you may have that you email him expect an arrogant response!! Not a fan and do not recommend taking his online class unless you are very knowledgable about History and just need the credit.
I took Professor Tijerina'a 8-week course but I enjoyed having him immensely. He gives great lectures and has an online page with all the lecture notes on it. The tests are half essay half multiple choice, the multiple choice being mostly from the book, so you need to read it, and he actually wrote the book so he can answer any questions.
This online course felt like a bit of a "phone-in" effort on Dr. Tijerina's part. Students are expected to read from a textbook and take tests on what they have read by a provided date. Your grade is determined by 5 tests (each consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions), and an optional paper (for students who desire a higher grade than a C).
good class big theme paper at end
Took online Hist1302 for the Summer course. There are 5 tests every Friday and an A-Level or B-Level Research Paper. The tests require tremendous amounts of reading and if you don't make this class a priority you are going to have a hard time. You can skip doing the paper if you get 80+ on all 5 tests for an automatic B.
Hands off professor and the reading is usually at least 100 pages per week. He doesn't respond to your required check ins so you never know if he received them or not. Tests are medium difficulty but he throws in usually 3-4 questions that weren't covered in the book and require knowledge about the time period.
I already have 2 degrees with one of them being from ACCtelling you I have had many professors. I have never dealt with anyone like this with such a non-chalant attitude of not accommodating their students. I work full time-up to 16 hour days twice a week plus trying to do school. This is supposed to be an easy class, not a Masters Thesis.
Dr. Tijerina was extremely rude to me on more than one occasion. I was confused with his instructions on certain assignments and when I asked for help he threatened to drop me from the class. I normally enjoy history classes but this professor really made me hate reading about a subject that I generally enjoy. I can't rate him a 0 otherwise I would
Took History of Texas Online. Hardest class I've ever taken. Half the test questions weren't on the review and questions were very detailed. I asked him if there was anything I could do to study better, when he found out how hard I was working he told me didn't work that hard to get his Ph.D., I think that should have told him something.
Insanely rude, even when I would ask for help or simply make a mistake. Through the entire semester I accidentally emailed him once when I was supposed to BB contact him and he told me some lie about how I violated some act. I showed by stepmother who is an attorney and she said that he's wrong. But he threatened to drop me for it. Terrible person.
He would not help me with a simple question, and disregarded my attempts to reach out to him multiple times, which were in correct syllabus required format. I submitted the 11 page essay with an A, and he changed my grade to a B after I turned it in, as to disqualify my essay from grading. Tijerina does not care for his students whatsoever.
If you want to learn US history and eventually find yourself applying skills gained from this class to others, take this course. He teaches you how to analyze history, which is arguably the most important skill we have to resist irrational actors. 120 pages / month. 5 tests, 1 A-Level Research paper or 1 B-Level research paper if you want a B
SAVE YOURSELF!!! I would never have taken a class by this person if I had read about him on here first. What a nightmare. I remember getting emails from people failing his class (the majority did). His exams ask the most random questions and they are worded to set you up. His questions are based on his opinions & views not straight facts.
Youre paying for the textbook and the credit with this class. Read the textbooks and take the tests. Its dissapointing, because Professor Tijerina is a well respected historian and if he had any input in the course aside from writing the syllabus it would be much appreciated. However, he grades fairly.
Essay questions are long and his tests are purely from book. Most of test questions are not as discussed but mainly open ended questions are covered. Reading the textbook is a big part of passing this class. Overall mediocre experience.
I took his DIL course. It's simple. Read the syllabus, do the homework, get the grade you deserve. He has you buy his book and study guide. The study guide is KEY. Everything that is on the test is from the study guide. He was very clear on the syllabus. So much that he repeated and wrote in bold what students normally scan over and miss.
Took Hist of Texas summer 2018. Had to drop. Graded on 5 tests, all of them very difficult. Strict with communication. Reading 3 (long) chapters a week for a 6 week class. Don't make my mistake, either take a different class for your degree or take it NOT online. As it was online I never met the dude so he could be really nice but idk man.
I enjoyed taking Professor Tijerinas class. I took the 8 weeks course which wasnt easy to start with but he was a great professor. He has long lectures. But literally everything you need for his tests are in his lectures. So if youre have to miss class, make sure you get someones notes! Hes kind of funny and really cares about his students.
I know college is challenging, however it shouldnt make you feel like youre there to fail. In my experience, I felt lost. I bought the required materials for this class, and it still wasnt enough. The questions from the tests were tricky, almost like he was setting up students to fail. Dont take his class.
Online? READ!! Get the study manual! If you read and try to understand the stuff, you will do fine! A lot of test questions came from the study manual! I came shy of the B at the end by 1 point and he went ahead and gave me a B! He seems reasonable if you are honest and try!
Don't trust everything he says. His lectures are more like rants you'd expect to hear from someone like Don Lemon on CNN. He will intentionally skew history to fit his narrative, do your own research and you'll find he often makes up information or generalizes the culprits to demonize anything anglo-american. Easy class otherwise.
ACC needs to get another Texas history professor. He has a very broad study guide, and super specific test questions. His tests only have 30 questions and there is too much information for only 30 questions. He is rude and not very helpful when you reach out. Also, he knows the book because he is a historian and expects you to be one too.
I took this Texas History class online and it is a very tough class to take. There is a ton of reading in this class and its a lot of hard work so make sure you have the time to commit to this class. Dr. Tijerina has a very structured grading system so make sure you pay attention to all of his requirements.
5 tests each over 100 pages of the textbook and only 30 questions, optional research paper for an A or book report for a B. Score 24/30 or above (not accumulative) on each test for an automatic B, no paper necessary. Easily over 12 hours of reading each week the study guide is useless and misleading. Save yourself the stress, don't take his class.
Study guide is useless. And you have to be very particular with what you remember to do well on tests. If you can avoid this texas history class you should.
This man does not care about you and will never hear you out. He despises helping and is by far the rudest professor I've ever met in my 3 years of college experience. When you need assistance he will not give it to you. When you need to reach him get ready to wait 4 days for a response. He's condescending and unapproachable. Horrid people person.
I was prepared for a horrible class based on other reviews. I've had harder classes. Lots of reading, but that's any online class since there are no lectures. I had never written a paper with an annotated bibliography/footnotes but it wasn't too bad Work hard, read the book, communicate with him, and I DIDN'T BUY HIS BOOK. Use the study guide!
This is the ONLY Texas history professor at ACC. Took online. If you take class, take by itself due to tons of time consuming reading. Has broad study guide that SOME test questions come from. Tests have 30 questions. He is an historian and expects you to be one too. He stresses reading comprehension. I stress DO NOT take his class.
Took this class online. Downloaded book using my Kindle Fire which was convenient. Completely reading and test heavy - multiple choice. He provided a "study guide," but instead of giving you a focus on what to study, it literally is just bullet points of the entire book- so lots of info no direction on what to expect on test - difficult to study.
EASY. 1st test-read everything + filled out tons of maps, not needed. 2nd test-did the sample questions in reading, did online vocab/practice quizzes and realized doing ONLY that + accessing his old ppts with the quiz questions were verbatim test questions. The paper was tedious. The book on "how to pass", don't buy it. Not kind in email.
Honestly read all the reviews expecting this class to suck. It definitely did at first, 5 quizzes and each require the textbook with reading from 80-100 pages. He's strict for sure on deadlines, don't miss any and you'll pass. Replies to emails within a day or so (through blackboard only) Nice professor who cares about what he's teaching though
Responsive, but be prepared but a very rude and unhelpful professor, incredibly condescending. The class is easy enough if you are able to collaborate with others and want to reread the entire syllabus and critically think about it. He cares more about you buying his workbooks and textbooks than you passing. Ignores science for his own opinion.
His book on how to pass history did not help me at all. Too much material to read. He does not give any extra credit. He is very dry. No kindness. The study guides are too long and require a lot of note-taking. Strict with everything. The test questions were very basic but difficult at times. Some were not even on the study guides. Thumbs down.
Completely non-present, zero lectures, no powerpoints & rude! You are paying for the credit + the textbook and you are on your own. He think he's teaching a master-level course, and takes it out on his students. You can't get higher than a B if you don't buy the extra book "How to pass history" THAT HE WROTE. Total scam. Delusions of grandeur.
Worst teacher you can ask for. Stay away from this clown. He's very delusional. DO NOT BUY HIS BOOK ON HOW TO PASS. Didn't use it at all and in previous statements below share the same concept.
He doesn't care about his students AT ALL. It was obvious throughout the year that he just wants to get the class over with. There is a ton of reading and no lectures/meetings. You are doing the class on your own, he hardly responds and if he does it is short/impersonal. His grading system works against you but an A is possible if you work rly hard
Professor is very clear on what to expect in his class and what to do to obtain the grade that we want. Instruction and testing are fully online without required class attendance. Class have 5 exams, use the study guides and you will be pass, write a book report for B grade and a book analysis for A grade. I buy the book online was an easy class.
If you can choose another professor for this subject, do so. Wants you to buy his book and basically enforces it by requiring the formatting of major assignments to follow what's written in said book. Behaves condescendingly towards students, and honestly I could have had the same class without a professor to begin with and been better off for it.
Requires you to buy his expensive textbook. Does not provide information on what you will be tested on beyond which chapter of the textbook it is on.
One of the most rude professors I've worked with. Short emails with no attempt to communicate and makes you spend tons of money on a text book that you don't even get a physical copy of.
He's ok, but frankly he's pretty rude. He only lets you contact him through blackboard, and if you don't follow his strict email outline he will not respond. There was literally only 5 tests and a paper, but he does tell you what to read. I guess if you're looking for a very minimal effort class this would be the one to take.
I work 3 jobs and take classes. The class itself is simple, 5 tests and an essay. I had 4/5 tests done and mixed up a deadline so I went from an average of 89 to an F. When I emailed him to try and figure something out, he refused to even let me finish the essay I had already started. You are better off taking literally any other professor.
I had an 84, and my letter grade was a C I don't understand how an 84 equates to a C. Plus, this professor wrote a textbook on how to pass the class, which is very odd to me, and had us (students) pay $30 for it. Don't recommend taking this class with this professor.
Was a very stressful class. Expectations are clearly outlined but there is little empathy/sympathy from him. Only 5 tests and an essay, but miss a deadline or essay requirement and you automatically fail. Exams are not that bad but the study guides are useless. Overall the work is manageable, but you're better off taking a different professor.
