Take his class, seriously! A good professor, very helpful !!!!!! His lectures and slides are easy to understand and helpful enough. No need to buy the textbook. And also, he took participation points. Exams are moderate, and getting A's for exams is not that hard. It's all multiple choice questions. If you do all the homework, it's A in your hand!
He is so great with his materials. And he has office hours every day of the week except for friday. He is a excellent teacher as long as you go to class and talks to him. Very patient.
His lectures were not interesting in my opinion and his accent didn't help, but it may just have been because it was a 7:30 class. He covers the content well and posts slides so you won't need the textbook. Exams are not difficult if you have a feel for economics in general. BEWARE: Final exam is not cumulative.
He covers the material well. I had him for a 7:30 so it was a bit boring and long. If you read the chapters in the textbook and somewhat have an idea of what is going on you will do fine. He gave us extra credit for hotseat questions that he would randomly give in class (if you skip just keep the hottest website open and you can still answer).
His accent is wired. Lecture is long. Too hard to focus on his lecture
Tests are somewhat difficult. He has an accent that is very thick and hard to understand. He seems like he enjoys teaching and what he does, but very difficult to learn because he has such an accent. Not mandatory to go to lecture but the extra credit from lecture is helpful
Prof. Vargas is a really good and helpful professor that taught me Macro-economics really well. If you attend his lectures and listen to him, you will certainly excel in this class. He is a really nice guy and gives cool homework sometimes. Also there's extra credit.
Dr. Vargas's lectures can be a little boring sometimes. Other than that, he's a good professor. If you show up to lectures and do the homework, it won't be hard to get a good grade in his class.
He 's very helpful in class and at office hours. You do not need a textbook if you attend lectures and use slides. You should probably practice his problem sets a lot, I didn't realize this till the final, so don't be like me. Hotseat points boost grades ideally by a letter grade and his exams are pretty difficult since there are no sample exams.
He's a good professor and enjoys teaching economics. His lecture notes are very useful, posted online, and the textbook is barely needed. Hotseat extra credit points during lecture is also nice. He has a bit of an accent, but it's not too bad. He frequently checks and asks if people have questions and is very good at answering those questions.
Lectures are slow but it makes the material easier to understand. He shows examples in lecture that are similar to the exam questions, so there are no surprises. Make sure you show up and pay attention because he takes attendance using Hotseat. Should be an easy A.
Thick accent. Homework is unnecessarily long, repetitive, and often does not work. Take 251 if you only need one ECON class. Avoid this prof classes if you can
His accent was difficult to understand at first, but don't let that scare you because after a few classes I knew exactly what he was saying. Go to class for the hot seat points!!! Don't waste money buying the text book. Just use practice exams and the power point slides to study for exams. Homework was harder than the exams in my opinion.
Could not understand him with his accent that i honestly just gave up trying. i actually enjoy economics so i was sad that i didn't get much out of it.
His lectures may not be the most exciting, but if you go to his office hours, he will work with you until you understand it, and do everything to help. Watch out for his exams, they're all multiple choice but the all the answers are the same except for one or two word differences - make sure to know your conceptual stuff! Hot Seat Points!
He is really friendly and helpful. Regarding to materials he covered in class, he explained every detail clearly and logically, which really helped me to understand the content. He also led us to do many sample questions during the class, which was also helpful. I would definitely take other classes he teaches in the following semester :)
Only showed up to lecture once after the first exam and still got an A-. WIll be easy if you've already taken microeconomics. Vargas is one of the most unintentionally entertaining lecturers I've had at the university. HOWEVER, he speaks very quietly and has a significant accent, and his voice modulation is off (he speaks really loud on some words)
I really enjoyed Dr. Vargas's class. He is a solid prof and knows his stuff. There is a lot of homework, but you have a week to do it. He doesn't take attendance, but you get extra credit by answering questions in class. This class is easy to do well in if you do the work, study, and go to class.
Be sure to get all the hotseat points as they can boost your overall grade by 5%. Homework is easy and tests are easy, pretty much everything comes straight out of the powerpoints that he provides. Easy to follow whether you go to class or not.
Make sure you read the chapter before lecture. His accent is quite confusing for me. You guys should sit in front so that you can hear him better. Attend class cuz there's lots of hotseat opportunities.
He is a good professor, the problem is his class is incredible boring. If you go to class he gives extra credit points (15 at Max). If you read the textbook and understand how everything connects with each other this class will be very easy for you. Your grade is determined by 3 tests but it is easy if you read the book and understand the material.
Great professor, some people found his accent a little difficult to understand but you get used to it. Class is mostly powerpoints and homework. Come to class so you can get participation points for extra credit
He's a good teacher who knows exactly what he's talking about. Just kinda hard to understand at times. If you listen to the lectures and do the homework you'll be fine
He puts up all the lecture slides in advance. There is normally one homework assignment a week. Tests are multiple choice and follow closely with the material covered in class and the review session. Plenty of study material for exams. He is passionate about what he teaches and willing to help any student who needs it.
if you go to class, you don't even need a textbook, all the exam covered is what he covered in class and HW
The lectures are clear and straight forward. He knows what he is talking about and does a good job connecting the material to actual situations in the present and past. If you understand the material, this makes it much more interesting. The class is not hard and attendance is optional except for extra credits.
Great teacher, he really puts in the effort to get the message across.
Pretty good. Lectures can be boring, but getting an A isn't too hard
Prof. Vargas is a real gem. Though his accent may take a few classes to get used to, you'll realize his lectures are invaluable. He makes sure to go through every topic in the text and explain it very well. Make sure to go through his sample paper well, and you can be sure you'll pass.
Amazing Economics Professor! Would definitely take a class taught by him again. The first thing you will probably notice at the beginning of the semester is that he has an accent, but you will DEFINITELY get used to it after going to a few lectures. Sit closer to the front for the best in class experience. Offers extra credit and exams are Easy A!
He's rather boring, and you're gonna have to buy the textbook because it's paired with an online homework application. He doesn't take participation and the lectures are all online, so that's a plus. Tests aren't too hard, but you're gonna need to study quite a bit.
The class is okay I guess, chances are you would need to take this class due to a requirement. Only went to 5 classes throughout the semester and still got an A, but I know of a few friends who went to all the class but still got a B/C, so I think it really depends on the individual. He is an okay professor.
Really interesting teacher and his lectures were exactly like the homework assignments. The exams also covered what we'd do in class, as long as you attended each lecture you're good to go. Didn't buy the textbook and did fine. The hoteseat extra credit questions really help boost your grade too.
At first it's a bit difficult to understand his accent, but you get used to it. He gives max 15 points extra credit on Hotseat for going to lectures. He is very accessible outside of class and very personal. He posts videos on BoilerCast and the tests are very similar to the practice exams we get. I enjoyed this class and he was a great professor.
Lectures are SO BORING. He drones on without checking in with students for comprehension. Watching grass grow is more exciting than one of his lectures. He also talks too quickly to take notes, so either listen or write, you can't do both.
Vargas is an incredible professor. In addition to teaching very well, he uses third-party elements (e.g., news clips) to enhance his lectures. The class is not difficult; he gives extra credit for merely showing up to class (very generous), and the hw/practices exams are exactly like the exams very approachable guy & knowledgeable.
252 is a breeze and Prof. Vargas teaches it well.
Investment goes up
Took this class Fall 2018, do not underestimate it. Vargas does a good job of explaining topics and has really good notes, not engaging enough to keep me awake during a 7:30AM lecture three times a week. Inserts humor occasionally and good example videos. Exams are hard.
He cares about teaching and is accessible if you have questions. Straight forward lectures and exams, but the homework that makes you think a little bit. The class could get a little boring as it consisted solely of lecture, homework and exams, but it was organized and fair.
I had Andres Vargas for ECON 252, and he was pretty good. Showing up to lectures definitely helps because you are obviously there listening to the professor + he gives out 0.5 points of extra credit for each class one attends. This ultimately boosts your grade by 5%. Furthermore, homeworks are given A's, and there are no quizzes to worry about.
Prof Vargas is a gem.
Large lecture and sometimes hard to pay attention in class
Professor Vargas is such a kind person and really sets us up for success on the tests. You don't even need the textbook as long as you pay attention in class and review the sample tests he posts before each exam.
His accent is not hard to comprehend at all, i'm not sure what some of these other reviews are talking about. If you listen to the lectures (they're all posted online too) and do the homework, you should get a good grade.
Vargas isn't a bad professor but coming from Blanchard for econ 251 he was a bit of a letdown. The lectures are just boring and the notes are on slides so they are difficult to keep up with. I just took notes outside of class and then sat in lecture and zoned out until the hot seat questions.
Great professor. Always reply to my email whenever I don't understand how to answer hw problems
He makes tough economic concepts easy to understand. Every class that was held in person, pre-COVID-19, would have a Hotseat question that was worth extra credit and he would tell you the answer so you always got it right. Reviews helped prepare for tests and the notes were organized and very helpful, would definitely recommend.
I don't think I went to a single lecture after this first for this class. You're better off reading the book, this class is not difficult if you have taken ECON251 or have taken any econ beforehand. The homework is easy, exams are cake, and there is extra credit if that's your thing. This class is exceptionally boring so only take if you need it.
Professor Vargas overall does what is needed to push material onto students. Grading is very tough for Honors Assignments, but the class is manageable. You will need to dedicate A LOT of time to understand the concepts even if you have previous experience. All practice tests he gives are NOTHING like actual exams, so study on your own.
Professor Vargas was a nice guy that would go through example problems and answer any questions that you might've had about the homework. I personally didn't attend the optional lectures because as long as you read the textbook and do the homework, this class is a breeze.
Lectures were clear and concise, and easy to contact if you're having problems with the material, but the grade cutoffs were rather harsh. I would appreciate it if the online learners were given a chance to gain more extra credit opportunities as was with the students who attended the lectures physically.
Lectures clarify concepts. Tests fairly represent class material. Answers questions clearly and quickly. Im an engin. student, but Vargass ECON 252 class was my best class the semester I took it. Extra credit opportunities optional. CONS: Doesnt release course material all at once, so you can only get 1 week ahead max (instead of 1 mo ahead).
The class was asynchronous this semester and was honestly a free A if you put in the time to do the readings and the homework. Dr. Vargas does a great job with making himself accessible and if you email him a question he usually responds within a day. By far one of the smoothest classes I've taken and I would love to take another class with him
I took Macroeconomics with Professor Vargas and it was a very straight-forward class. As long as you put in some time every week, it is not too difficult. He offers a small amount of extra credit. He is very fair and logical and he does a good job of connecting course content to current events.
Very organized. Explains well. Exams can be a bit tricky. But plenty of opportunity to get a good grade.
Professor Vargas was passionate about the topics of every lecture and would explain things very clearly. He would then apply what we learned to the real world so that we can see how it acts in real time. This was effective and he was always willing to answer questions. Great professor!
I had taken Macro before, and Vargas' lectures helped me reinforce a lot of concepts. He is a great lecturer and a fair grader. Would take more classes with him in the future if given the opportunity.
This class requires tons of work, which is not always bad! The materials are mainly appliances, so you need to grasp the topic proficiently. I think taking his class online affects my rating significantly because my friends who took the class in-person said that he was such a good professor.
Econ 512 was a quintessential "slides, homework, test, repeat" sort of class. Prof. Vargas does try to spice up lectures with videos, but I found it hard to focus much of the time. Beware of the weekly homeworks, they may seem easy at first but towards the end of the semester they tend to get very long. Otherwise, nothing else really stands out.
Great professor and fairly easy class. 1 HW and 1 Extra credit assignment each week. He goes over the material in clear videos, reserves class time for any questions, and provides all his powerpoints. Responsive to emails and DB posts. Tests were open note and all over content that was covered. Would definitely recommend
Prof. Vargas wasnt bad by any means. He clearly was knowledgeable about the subject matter and that made for some really informative lectures. One thing, and this may not bother many people, is that he is from Colombia I believe, and has a somewhat strong accent. It can be a little hard to understand him at times. Overall, not bad at all!
Professor Vargas really knows his stuff in the world of Economics. He does have a strong accent, so at times it can be a little difficult to understand him. Pay attention to the lecture videos, do the homework assignments thoroughly (will be needed for exam understanding), and do the practice exams. Class revolves solely on understanding of content
Vargas has a thick accent, but after a while, it gets easier to understand him. Lectures always last the whole class and I highly recommend going to every lecture. Each lecture we have Hotseats that go towards extra credit, which can bring you from a C to a high B easy. When it comes to exams you really have to know the material, they can be hard.
Andres Vargas is a savior from heaven who has come down to teach econ. He teaches the info effectively and has fair exams.
Pastor Vargas is a blessing to all his disciples in 252. The homeworks can sometimes be tedious but they're easy work, and the tests are very easy if you just pay attention in the lectures. Recommend attending all lectures to get the Hotseat points, getting all of them adds 4.7% to your final grade.
He is an amazing professor who knows his subject and is always ready to help out his students.
Coming from ECON 511 to ECON 512 you will realize how much a good lecturer matters. His lectures are well organized, the textbook describes the concepts in details (I highly recommend you read the textbook). Tests are pretty straightforward. Practice homework questions as well as the textbook questions and you will do good.
Professor Vargas is probably one of the best econ professors I've had. He's very straightforward in his material, makes sure no one is behind, and offers outside help to students who need it. Everything is clear cut and seems to be an experienced teacher. He makes everything make sense. He GOATed.
Andreas is an amazing professor. His lectures are concise and clear, he provides tons of information and specifies what is important to remember. Every chapter has a homework assignment, but if you keep up with lectures they are pretty easy.
Professor Vargas is a great professor and person overall. Going to class is important because of the hotseat extra credit which can help you a lot at the end of the semester. The exams were never too difficult as long as you paid attention during class, do the homework, and go over the practice exams. One of my favorite professors at Purdue.
Dr. Vargas is great. I have never met anyone who dislikes his classes. I have personally taken two courses with him, and he teaches the exact same way in both. Lots of example problems. Plenty of out of class resources to succeed. His homework can be tedious and very long, but it shows you anything that might be on the exam. Take his courses.
Professor Vargas is so sweet and kind. The class isn't the easiest ever but he makes it very accessible. He gives plenty of extra credit and not much homework so if you just show up to class, it's very easy to pass and with not much effort, get a good grade.
Professor Vargas is the sweetest professor I've had. He always answers questions and his lectures are actually interesting. I didn't do well in Econ 251 but he helped me understand and I did better in Econ 252. He offers extra credit by coming to class. His lecture slides are also very helpful. The practice exams are VERY similar to the exam.
The first thing you'll notice is Prof Vargas' thick Colombian accent. But it's very understandable, and I like how he says the word "fundamental" as well as "econometrics". But anyway he lectures very clear, makes occasional comedic remarks, I found his lectures interesting. He picks very good videos to show the class. Exams+content pretty easy.
Professor Vargas makes this class very manageable. Your grade is heavily based on exams, but he offers practice exams that are very similar to the real exam. He also offers extra credit for every lecture you attend, for a total of 5% of your total grade. He has a thick Columbian accent, but it is understandable. I would definitely recommend Vargas!
This professor taught very well and even though he has an accent, you were able to understand exactly what he was saying. He was able to help answer your questions and was accessible outside of class. If you go to class, you are able to receive extra credit on hotseat. I really recommend this class and professor.
Exams are worth 80% of grade so If one exam goes poorly there are not many opportunities available to truly make a difference in your final grade without doing perfect on the other 2 exams homework does nothing for final grade at the end of semester
Vargas is fine. The practice exams felt SO similar to the real exams so do them a couple of times. His lectures can be really boring at points and were a downgrade from Fox's 251 lectures. That being said, he is always willing to help and gives a bunch of EC.
Vargas is a good lecturer who explains concepts well. His class is exam heavy but show up to class and answer the hotseat questions to get a small grade boost for those on the edge of a grade. Homework is easy as they are once a week due on Sundays. He has an accent but still is very understandable.
He is a great professor who wants his students to succeed in the course. His lectures are also very beneficial and he gives extra credit in those lectures. overall would definitely take his class.
Professor Vargas gives clear and interesting delivery of class content, which is fun to learn. Attendance not mandatory but he gives extra credits every class, even telling you the correct answer every time. Helpful reviewing sessions provided before all exams. Easy to communicate as well. Would definitely recommend.
Professor is good and helpful, but the class is not recommended. Without enough examples in class and explanations in HW, it's not easy to get a good grade. The professor may help during the office hour but it's still too hard. Exams worth 50 each about 70% grades and 11 assignments worth 6 points each with unclear explanations were frustrating.
Vargas seems to care about what he teaches, which is always a plus! The material can get tricky, but he was open to answering questions during lecture. Macro is tough, but he is a nice guy, so if you run into troubles understanding the material, don't be afraid to reach out to him.
His class was good even though he has some kind of accent, but as long as you attend the class this will not influence anything. There was a lot of extra credit through the hotspot and economic panels which could boost your grades. If you have already taken Econ in high school, then this class should be relatively easy for you.
Professor Vargas is an amazing lecturer. For a beginner class, he explains economic topics in an understanding way, and provides many examples to real-life scenarios in class. Also, extra credit is offered for every class attended. If you can get over his accent (which you'll get used to by lecture 2-3), he's a great lecturer.
This class is great! The homework can be time consuming but those are the only assignments. The midterms will be decently easy if you make sure to study for them but otherwise this class is mostly based on the lectures. I will warn you that the class gets harder as it goes on but if you pay attention you will be alright!
exams are nothing like the practice ones he provides. would never take it again
Manageable class if you pay attention. The lectures were mediocre. Slides and graphs explain concepts well enough for a basic understanding. There is a lot of extra credit opportunities to help you pad your grade.
I took this during the summer 4-week course and just to let you know NEVER take a 4-week course as this blows. Homework every day with 1.5 hours of lecture and midterms that are draining. I got an 87.5/100 for the first midterm but the average dropped considerably on the 2nd midterm. He's not a bad professor but 240/300 points are Exam related. :(
I didn't like Macro as much as Micro, but it was still an interesting class. He is a fun guy and lectures were engaging. The content is all on slides. The homework was easy as long as you understand the lectures. Tests weren't bad at all.
Vargas is one of the better lower level Econ professors you'll find at this school. His lectures are entertaining and his exams aren't horrible. He explains economic topics using real world examples, which I found really helpful. Loves participation points so definitely show up to class.
Econ 252 with Profe Vargas is really easy. Exams are worth 80% of the grade but you can get up to 15% extra credit just by showing up to class.
Dr. Vargas is a good professor, and I enjoyed his class. He was able to break down complicated topics, making them easier to understand.
Pretty good class with lots of extra credit. Attendance is extra credit. Homework could be time consuming and annoying but you can redo questions you get wrong. You don't really have to pay attention/do anything in class, but it does make the exams a bit difficult. The lectures are interesting and the professor is nice.
Vargas is a great professor for ECON 252, and he offers extra credit for showing up to class and answering an iClicker question or two correct. Gives weekly homework and tests are challenging but he does post practice exams which help. He does have an accent but you can still easily understand him. Would definitely take another one of his classes
He uses lots of visual aides while teaching like videos and real world data that is extremely helpful.
The most incomprehensible exam writing ever. Someone needs to proof read him. For exams being 80% of your grade, its kind of unacceptable. Also be prepared for every question to not be a topic thats important at all to Macroeconomics but rather about random theories he didnt even mention in lectures.
lectures were boring but not terrible. homeworks r on pearson, never read the textbook. he seems like a nice guy but i never went to class because it was boring, still got an ok grade. if u alr took 251 this will be pretty easy. second midterm is randomly hard.
Good class, lectures dragged out a bit but in a good way since it helped us understand the concepts.
Vargas is good! Personally I thought the class was boring. Final and second exam are much harder than first so do well on the first one. Study and know concepts. He does care and explains questions well.
Vargas is a smart lecturer who knows what he's talking about and has taught this class for many years. Nonetheless, his lecture pacing can get very boring. Although it's likely because he's not native to the U.S., his voice lacks enthusiasm and isn't great at making the topic interesting. Overall, the class is moderate, slightly harder than 251
Vargas is an amazing econ teacher. His lectures are very clear, and he is willing to talk with students who don't understand the material after class. The homework assignments are due every week are manageable but they may take time. He provides a practice exam with material similar to the real exams, and they helped us focus on what to study.
Dr. Vargas is awesome. The material can be a bit tricky, but he breaks it down well. Tests aren't too hard.
Professor Vargas was by far my best instructor this semester. He takes time to help his students and his lectures are very efficient, covering everything on exams. He offers optional in-class help sessions for the harder homework assignments, which makes a huge difference. He is always willing to answer questions. Easy A if you do the assignments.
The GOAT ECON Professor!
Dr Vargas is a ok professor. I personally found Macro a little bit more interesting compared to Micro. His exams are not bad as long as you do some studying. His lectures can be a bit boring but attendance is not mandatory and is counted as extra credit via iClicker. Homeworks can take some time since they are done on Pearson. Way better than Fox.
honestly a super kind professor, but his material doesn't match up with exam. Lots of homework and material is difficult to understand.
Vargas is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching. The class material doesn't always line up perfectly with the exams, but the exams and homework aren't too difficult. Overall good professor, and especially way better than the alternatives (Fox) for intro Econ classes.
Breaks down difficult statistics topics and does a great job at explaining them.
I love Vargas, I am actually planning to take as many economics classes as possible with him. He cares about his students and their success, and he is so accessible. He gives out extra credit for attending lecture, and he is kind and honestly hilarious. While I earned an A-, let that not reflect him in any way, just study more than me :) goat!!
