Some people find reading the text book more helpful than his lectures.
seems like a nice prof, but he needs to learn basic arithmetic!
his exam is really hard
His test are 10 times harder than his notes!

Midterms are a little tough but definitely worth having as a prof.
He was a mean man

His midterm is hard, but if you pass the the course even you got 0 inclass
This prof is completely useless and helpless. God bless u if u take his course
His exams are a little hard, but he definitely preps you for the final
Excellent Prof... i have no clue what you people on this board are on....
Easy to Understand, Not hard~ Good choice!
he teaches well...but exams are unbelievably hard
This guy is so cool. He reminds me of a Leprechaun! ..... Good teacher too...
funny prof but his exams are way too unfair!

very good teacher in class tests are ok but he is very clear and understandable
This guy is the best! Thank your lucky stars if you have him!
very funny guy! almost makes you look forward to calculus class
don't bother visiting him for office hrs, he doesn't like guests
He is the soul to the department of math and a valuable asset to UBC!!!
Funny guy, tough course, just make sure your up to date with material.
very hard prof
i loved him~~~~ he's a really really good prof.. very clear.. easy to understand
math is never easy, but he does a good job of teaching concepts and etc...
Mr. Communist
so good so cool
The best math teacher I've had in my entire life. Even though I had to take this course, I really learned a lot. His lectures are lively too and so one does not get too bored.

I hate math. but this guy made things better. his midterms arent necessarily easy but he's better then most of the other math profs. Overall, he's the bomb! he's funny too!
He is the best educator I have ever met in my life. He is so responsible that even if you send him emails at night, he will ask all your questions at 05:00am! So great! I sincerely appreciate his teaching! So experienced! Thanks god for having him!!!
Good prof. Exams are tricky though.
i'd say HARD but GREAT prof. just need to study more
he does not know how to teach math! i went from 80% to 47%
thought hez a terrible prof.. but turns out hez really really GoOd! EXTREMELY HELPFUL! clear explanation! excellent prof!
Good prof. Midterm Exams are hard. Good Teaching
If you work hard, you will make the grades. For me, I started with a final of 70% in math 184 with this guy because I was lazy. Then I got my act together, and worked hard to get a 89% in math 105 with the same prof. Conclusion, effort = good results.

hard tests...soooo hard
His midterm and homework were really hard but his final was easy though.
awesome prof. helped me out with a lot of stuff. funny lil french dude.
The best math prof ever!..honestly! Also, really funny and makes math as fun as possible. Term tests a little tricky but finals were easy. Work hard and you'll do great. Thanks Dr. Adler for a great year!
okay, my midterms went like this, 62%, 30%, 87%. Studied the most for the 2nd one. Cant figure it out why. But final was reasonable, got away with B.
I am taking math 104 with him rite now!!! ( 1st in sem 2003 ) his tests are freakin hard...waste a lot of time in class to prove stupid d/dx of sinx = cosx ..n etc... his midterms are very similar to the level of finals... overall i dun recommend him...
awesome prof! if you pay attention and practice a lot you can do really well
Very funny, Lectures are very clear, mid-terms are tough, finals are easy
Somewhat akward
awesome prof. most entertaining math teaacher i've ever had!
It's sometimes hard to stay awake in that class but he has really good notes that are easy to follow and understand. The only hard part is doing well on his midterms but they should prepare you for the final.
class is boring,i just don't seem to understand his notes sometimes, midterms are hard and tricky, but i guess finals are ok.
Gosh I hated this class. He didn't make it any better either. Notes weren't too bad but impossible assignments and weird ways to solve the different problems. Yuck.
It's so hard.
Overall good prof. Though the midterms are hard, and are graded harshly, but if you spend time studying, you will definitely get a deserving grade. The notes are good and clear in most cases. His website offers very good resources for exam preparation.
Good at explainations. However he tends to be dry at times and puts you to sleep. Very considerate of students. He will fully answer any question you have to the best of his ability. Hard marker. Nice guy.
I had Prof. Adler back in 1998. Midterms were difficult, but if you study appropriately, you would do well. I am by no means a math person, yet I got a solid B+ in his class. Notes are clear and step-by-step. Rambles a little bit but it's the charm.
He answers all related questions fully, and in much more depth than you want. (Which is good when you actually want the depth). Interesting character.
I was in his class 2 years ago but never had the chance to rate him. He's probably the best math teacher anyone can get. His explanations are clear, he's funny and he's VERY helpful. I HEARD HE HELPS MAKE THE FINAL EXAM.
He's a good teacher, although I did poorly in his class. But that was just because I didn't go to class and didn't study. However, the one week that I actually did go was very very very helpful for the final.
THE BEST PROF ON THE PLANET! HE IS ABLE TO SIMIPIFY ABSTRACT IDEAS AND ENGAGES STUDENTS' ATTENTION TO HIS SPARKLING LECTURES! HARD TESTS AND HARD MARKING SCHEME, THOUGH, HE IS STILL THE BEST THAT NO OTHER PROFS CAN BEAT HIM!
defintiely a "NO". his tests r hard. Markers r Harsh. when u get ur answer wrong even all ur steps r RIGHT u get 2 out of 10 marks.his exams r out of 40.his class avg is 39% 4 1st test,2nd test was 50%. Whoeever said he is good is FOOLIN u into
This was my first university class ever! Was a little intimidated at first but it turned out to be an awesome class, despite waking up for the 8am start. Don't be discouraged by the negative comments some have left here. He's one of the best math profs
Very supportive, probably one of the nicest profs in math department. Gives little bit challenging but absolutely fair tests and doing well on his exams totally depend on the students!!!!!
I'm in his class this semester and I have to say that I have never like calculus until now. Classes are very enjoyable and he will often add a funny story into the lesson. Tests and exams are not easy. Don't fall behind and study every possible resourse
He's a great prof. Good at teaching, explaining. Tests are a little hard, but if you study, you'll do great on them. A fun guy~
he's kinda hard to understand sometimes, cuz he lisps so much. He explains things well but the examples he does in class and the homework he assigns definatley DON'T prepare you for his tests! his midterms are BRUTAL!!!
horrible horrible horrible teacher!
this guy is great! he's the head of the math department and probably the best teacher. he speaks english and is interesting to listen to. if you can, GET IN HIS CLASS!
I can honestly say that though I find his midterms downright HARD (homework does nothing!), he's a good prof. He's funny too, a quiet and underlying humor, but it's there, and it's great. Though, as I said, his midterms are kind of screwy.
He's a great teacher. A little eccentric, great sarcastic sense of humour. Be warned: questions from the book do nothing. make sure you can do the practice midterms and you'll do fine. Tests are harder than other sections (i've heard) but since he writes the final it's worth it to take his section.
Adler is great because he really helps to prepare you for the Final! His midterms are killer, especially if you don't study, but they all get scaled at the end to the easier final!! He is hilarious!
he's not actually the head of math, nor the undergrad chair.
midterms are nothing like the txt book or his examples. The only thing u can do to study for it is go over past midterms. soo funny always talks about his daughter and how she makes more money than him. And when he makes a mistake on the board and someone tells him, the look on his face is priceless
Great prof! Midterm questions have nothing to do with textbook. More helpful to do past midterms for practise than textbook questions. Midterms are hard, but very possible to get good grade if you understand how to apply material.
Adler is a great guy, but he is a bit snobby. He's entertaining, funny and engaging but his tests are HARD. Note: HARD
i love his wierd sense of humour. though his lectures get a lil boring, his uncalled for jokes makes up for it. gotta love his sandels too! you definately need to go over past midterms and other practice work to do well.
he's not hard, as logn as u take the notes and look at them, u'll do well. I got A+
funny guy; shows interests in math; challenges students to a higher level. great professor, to me the best math prof at ubc!!!
very smart
he always jokes abt france being better than england. waterloo shall drain into a stinkin trench!
I'm terrible at math, and I only took it cuz I had to, but he's a pretty good prof. His tests are hard, really hard, and have nothing to do with his notes or homework. Study old tests, it's a better use of your time. Funny guy, with good jokes, but the tests are hard (and i take good notes)
Addy's great. He's quiet, so sit up front. His website has examples, notes, and answers which was SO SO SO HELPFUL! His class covers the basics, which is understandable because the knowledge range of the students coming in is so varied, but he provides LOADS of material for A and other students on his website...you gotta do it for yourself!!!!!!!!!
Textbook was useless, class notes and practice exams were the way to go. I thought his midterms were harder than the final. Talks a little slow and boring, but math is never fun.
Very nice teacher
well, he is the greatest math prof at ubc. His lecture is full of wit. He makes math fun and simple. Too bad he is going to retired.
Taking this class because it's required for the education faculty. Adler is nice and funny but spends our 4 hours a week doing problems on the board without giving us any rules/formulas/overarching themes....pretty frusterating. i will be passing the class thanks to my tutor who's doing the actual teaching. text is next to useless.
BEST PROF EVER. I am an arts student, and in my five years of university, this was my favorite prof. He's hilarious, is a great teacher, and more importantly, understands how students understand and retain information. He is a pedagogical master of mathmatics!
I am flabbergasted that he was someone's best prof, our whole class was frustated; lectures almost incomprehempossible, you need to go to the TA's just to be able to do the weekly assignments because the textbook doesn't cover most topics. The course gets easier, decipher his notes after class. The final was easier than the assignments.
His appearance might be misleading as well as his teaching stile, but after a few classes you’ll realise that he is the most experienced and knowledgeable prof in the department. Go to his office hours and do the homework and you’ll get at least a B+.
The textbook for this course is easy. To bad we dont really use it.
It's been a while since I took the course. But I remember he was pretty good.
he was the best professor, but most importantly he is a great human being
Great professor so helpful. Great human being. It was an honor to meet him. Meeting him gave me my career as a mathemtaics teacher and he is mostly responsible for it. I am forever grateful to him. May the best come for you in your life.
