This is a generic calculus course and it was pretty straight-forward. Homework is unlimited attempts, lectures are easy to understand and although fast-moving, pretty easy to grapple with. Definitely not a math person but I did well in the course. One dropped test (incl. final). Andrew is a good professor! I recommend him. Easiest 21C class
Professor Alameda is a good teacher, and its easy to understand the content. His grading is very generous, as 40% is homeworks and 60% is exams (1 dropped, which could be the final). Even though the content could be challenging, the exams are very similar to the homework and are not too hard.
He could sometimes be confusing during lectures but overall was decent. He was lenient with extending homework when asked and a large portion of the grade comes from homework (40%) and you get infinite retries so it is easy to get 100%. Discussions were very helpful and often covered problems that would be on exams. Allowed a cheat sheet for exams.
He was amazing. the homework was easy it was on pearson and it is 40% of the overall grade. the 60% tests. You have 4 tests and one of them is your final. One of the test is gonna be dropped and ti can be your final. His homework are easy and if you find math difficult definitely take his class
decently easy class.. the midterms were a lot like the hw problems so make sure you have a good grasp on those & if anything you have a cheat sheet so you can write down examples.
Wonderful guy all around, does his job and does it well.
The tests can be a bit challenging, but you can use a cheat sheet, so it shouldn't be too bad. One of your exams is also dropped. A large portion of your grade (40%) is homework, which is nice. It is quite easy to pass this class as long as you do the online homeworks, and put in a bit of studying for the tests.
He is genuinely the most human math professor I have ever had in my life. He is very nice, funny, and is very clear about what you will be graded on. 20% unlimited tries HW and 80% tests, but you get a whole front and back of a sheet of paper for a cheat sheet. 3 non-cumulative exams + cumulative final, all equal weight. One of the 4 can be dropped
Great. I've never seen a good math teacher like him. Professor Alameda is highly recommended
He was a great professor. He did up the difficulty from last quarter, and the grading was a little harsher, but nothing a little studying cannot deal with! Study the homework very closely, his test questions are basically verbatim the homework questions. Be careful though, on the third exam he threw a curveball. Upside is generous partial credit.
Dr. Alameda is really excellent. Grade on 20% hw, 80 % exams. Total 4 exams(including the final) and you can drop the lowest exam, it can be the final. I think if you pay attention in class, and go to OH when you don't understand something, it will be an easy A class. He cares for his students a lot, this quarter he has OH on every workday.
Amazing professor! No curve, but lowest of 4 exams (including Final) is dropped. 1 page notes allowed on every exam. Clear, well-organized lectures with lots of examples. Very responsive to student questions. 2 hours of office hours every day.
You can take this class if you already know calculus, but if you don't know the material do NOT take him. He is very bad at teaching, but makes up for it with high percentages of homework and dropping an exam score. Not one lecture went by where he did not make a mistake.
Alameda is great, 80% of grades being exams can be intimidating but 2 sided cheat sheets and dropping one makes it easily manageable. Homework matches the difficulty of exams, and he is extremely open outside of class with office hours and you'll never feel intimidated to ask questions.
Great mathematics professor. The homework is due at the end of the quarter but its very helpful to do them before tests. His test questions are very similar to the homework questions. Theres also a cheat sheet given, including the final, and you can drop the lowest test score. There is no curve unless everyone does poorly (unlikely).
choose him
take him get easy A
He is a really great professor, if you show up to his lectures, take good notes, and do practices you should be fine. His study guide for the midterm was really helpful. Protect him at all cost.
Teaches with example problems and is very accessible. He is a bit disorganized tho, so lectures can be hard to follow. Discussion wksts are not relevant to the tests, so they are just work, and there are no practice exams to go off of. Overall mixed, but I don't like math and he seems to teach for people who do, so that may be why.
Great teacher, very caring. However, his exams are not like the study guide around 12 pages with so many problems. You can only pass if you understand math and algebra, if you don't know, good luck.
Alameda is an amazing lecturer. Very clear and breaks down every step. Lots of office hours, very interactive and easy to ask questions. Homework was online, 100 attempts per question and was useful to study. Page of notes front and back allowed for each test, but no calculator. His exams are quite difficult and long so be prepared.
for people who are good at calc, his class is probably super easy. for those who aren't, he is extremely accessible and helpful during office hours. i should've been going from the start but only started going towards the end. webwork hw are way harder than lectures and exams but you get 100 attempts. but he's very cool, very silly and goofy
Allows 1 Front/Back notesheet to use during test. Entire grade is curved at the end. All lectures are posted directly after it is over.
Great guy, a down-to-earth math lecturer which is hard to find. He understands you don't wanna learn all the theoretical nonsense and gets to the point, grading is very clear and you can even drop your lowest test grade meaning if you have an A by the time the final comes, you can skip, which I did :)
One of the best Math professors! Dives straight into problems which are quite similar to the ones on the exams. Really transparent about what will be on the exams. Gives hints about what we need to study for the exams. Can offer extra credits on exams(1 or 2 the whole quarter). Really easy if you took AP Calculus BC. Easy A class if you study.
Great professor. Has office hours every other day of the week and discussion, at least in 21B, is considered an office hour with your TA and is not graded. Homework is straightforward and he puts a lot of care into his tests.
Amazing professor! No curve, but lowest of 4 exams (including Final) is dropped. 1 page notes allowed on every exam. Clear, well-organized lectures with lots of examples. Very receptive to questions. 2 hours of office hours every day. Lectures recorded.
His lectures are very fast-paced but informative. He gives a bunch of examples in class to prep for the midterm and final. Prof Alemeda has been SUPER available outside of class during office hours and he is super fun to talk to. The hw is Pearson and not hard at all. This tests are very fair, not easy, but fair. Study well and you will do fine :)
Alameda was okay at the start, but after the first midterm, he started to go downhill. He was sketchy with his curves and was inconsistent with his grading rubrics. Even though you could have a note sheet front and back, they'd prove to be almost useless on the tests. He was extremely unapproachable, and offered little to no help when needed.
Alameda is a great prof, best handwriting I've seen in profs so far! Class is weighted exam heavy, so study thoroughly. You're allowed a cheat sheet front and back on your exams. I would recommend you dedicate one page for section reviews and the other for trig identities/equations. Do practice exams, but expect actual exams to be 2x harder!
Very good professor. Great lectures and is clear about what will be on the test. However, very test heavy and the test questions are often 10x harder than the problems gone over in lecture. If you struggle to do tests like me, do not take him. There is very little room for error on tests for a good grade. Very cool though.
Great guy, but ok professor. Class was based on 20% homework and 80% tests (2 midterms, 1 final that was worth twice the midterm). Allows 1 full sheet of paper (front/back) as cheat sheet. The curve for the class favored students who had grades below a C-. Grades above C- basically had no curve. Ended up having to teach myself everything.
Class is organized and 40% MT (2 of them), 40% final, 20% HW. Exams are not hard as long as you do practice provided. He gives 100+ problems per midterm and the hard ones are very similar to the actual exams. Veery explicit on whats exam. Homework more difficult than exam IMO. Not a bad 21B prof by any means. Not much curve unless you are failing.
Very test heavy class 80%, and the homework and practice tests are way easier than what you will see on the actual test. Going to office hours helps but the lectures are hard to follow and he moves topics to quickly even when no one understands it yet
Prof. Alameda is a great instructor. The course was definitely difficult, and I didn't consult the textbook often, but his lectures are pretty fast paced and can require review after class is over. I recommend attending lectures in person, and going to discussions (though this is TA dependent). Also note, he grades by the department-set curve.
One of the better math professors at UCD. Lots of practice problems were done in lecture. Not much homework and very lenient with deadlines. Very transparent about what would be on exams. Exam questions were sometimes considerably harder than the practice exams, but they were fair. LOTS of partial credit. Lectures recorded. Discussion optional.
great lecture, tests are difficult than practice exam.
He said based on last years curve, a 70% was a B. Finished with a 74% and a C. He did not give a curve at all.
The actual exams were significantly harder than lecture problems and practice tests. There was basically no curve at the end, and each test was out of 25 points making each point missed literally detrimental to your grade.Helpful OH and clear straightforward lectures. Be ready to put in a lot of effort and studying, and dont fall behind on content.
The exams were more difficult than practice exams, he allows a note sheet but did not curve the grade like he said he would. It was roughly a 2% curve on the final grade.
Nice and intelligent guy! His teaching style didn't work well for me, and each exam being worth only 25 points made any mistake on the exams (which were harder than the provided practice exams) a huge detriment to your overall grade. Wish he did more challenging problems in lecture - to do well in his class you have to do textbook problems!
80% tests, 20% homework. was a very caring and respectable teacher. everyone complained about him not having a curve when he said he would but a curve is not a guaranteed thing to receive. examples in class were about a difficulty of 1, practice midterm was a difficulty of 2, and actual exams were a difficulty of 3.
Andrew is super energetic and really understands the math he's teaching. Lectures are pretty engaging but the first midterm was so rough. The second one was better, and the final was a bit tough. Homework was all unlimited attempts on webwork and there were weekly discussion worksheets.
Alameda is one of the best calculus professors in the 21 series. Though his class was test-heavy (20% homework and 80% exams), his lectures were amazing in understanding the material, and Alameda provides sample exams that are extremely similar to the real tests. I didn't find the lack of a curve to be an issue, considering how fair the exams are.
If you can choose him, choose him. Easy to follow on class, lecture notes clear, have recordings. Great reviewing - exams quite similar to review questions. Super nice at office hours. Usually a few people would be there asking about specific questions (on review or homework). He would do the questions step by step and make sure we all understand.
Took him during SQ24, grades consisted of homework (10%), discussion (10%), and exams (80%). If you had AP calc experience this class is a breeze, but if you didn't I would remember doing practice problems he provides. He lets his students have a cheat sheet (front and back) for exams which was amazing. Overall take his class!
If you take this class, I recommend always looking at your test to see if there are grading errors. However Dr. Alameda himself is very kind and a great teacher. Office hours are helpful and he will answer any questions you have until you understand. The class is test heavy : 40% two midterms, 40% final.
This class is hard, but it is going to be hard no matter who you take it with, but I recommend Alameda. I heard some people say he takes too much time explaining concepts, but as someone who didn't calc in high school, I find this to be very helpful.
Overall, he was a really good professor. He explained topics clearly and effectively with lots of examples. The class is weighed pretty heavily on exams, but the homework is a good way to gauge difficulty and topics. I never attended OH, but I've heard they are a good way to get help if you need it. Definitely recommend taking him if possible.
Had MAT22A, respectable and understanding guy. Easily best lecturer in the MAT department no doubt. Bearable workload, tests were relatively difficult. Sometimes got a lot of points knocked off, but more of a TA thing. Interesting lecturer in general, talks like a khan academy video which makes time fly by. Highly recommend him if he's an option
He would often go on a lot of tangents during lecture and wouldn't go over problems that would be on the midterm. Though he did give very few practice problems for the final and the midterms he posted the solutions very late at night before the day of the test. The practice questions that were given were also not similar at all to the actual test.
This prof is actually very nice and kind. But he gaslights and undirwimes how hard the exams (two midterms, 1 final) are going to be. The biggest reason people take him is because you get a cheatsheet for exams, most of the time you dont even end up using it. He said the final was going to be easy with no curveballs, that was not the case.
Midterms were easy/ fair but the final kicked my butt. Class is curved so I think class is very fair and nice! Ended with a B+ but i could have studied earlier and a lot better. Homework is nice and office hours are great! Don't wait to start studying and doing well! great prof tho! love and taking him again.
I was scared for 22A but Prof. Alameda made the subject so approachable and easy to understand. His exams were quite difficult, but we had a cheat sheet and they were doable with a lot of preparation (gotta understand theoretically, not just computationally). He curved generously at the end too! Great prof. for 22A, and TA Jeshu was the best too!
Overall, one of the best calc professors at UCD. Reasonable amount of homework + flexible due dates. This class is very test heavy. He gives a cheat sheet + practice exams/study guides which do help A LOT. However, expect the tests to be more difficult but fair. #1 advice is to go to office hours. He is very caring and does solving steps!
This professor is hilarious, lectures himself in lectures on very easy topics, exams are hella difficult, learning and exam testing are not the same. There is also a lot of homework and the lectures are not clear. This is one of the worst professors I have ever seen bar none, anyone who enrolls in his class you will definitely regret it.
In today's world, I'd be hard pressed to see a professor in a lecture near the end of the semester telling us that he or she is going to tutor people in their studies on the weekends by charging them money to tutor them in what, I'm afraid to say, they're tutoring. Maybe the professor is short of money, then might as well switch to something else.
Professor can't go to college for two more years, it's seriously misguided
Maybe the school has something to do with the professors, otherwise how did the professors come to the school as professors.
prof alameda's a nice guy, but his teaching could be better. oftentimes, the examples we did during lecture didn't match the difficulty of problems on the test or even in the homework. (most of the test questions were pulled from the homework, so watch out for that.) utilize the cheat sheet, go to his OH, and refer to piazza for help. good luck!
Professor Alameda truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His office hours are very helpful, and he provides a list of topics to focus on. The study guides that provide homework problems are very similar to the test, so practice those. Watch lectures, go to his office hours, and you'll do great. One of my favorite professors ever!
Loved calc with Dr. Alameda. His lectures were clear, concise, and had examples, and he was very clear about what we did/didn't have to know. He was responsive to in-lecture questions. Only shortcoming for the class was that prof and TAs weren't very active on piazza, so best way to ask questions etc was OH. Regular homework but flexible deadlines.
If you want to succeed, do basically all the problems on the study guides. He records lectures, teaches slowly, and answers questions with detail. He uses a cheat sheet, so you don't have to memorize formulas, unit circle, etc. The midterms were very easy and similar to the practice test. The final was harder, but there was a good curve.
he's so organized and explains things clearly and is so nice and this quarter i havent even cried about calc at all because this class is so good
10/10 best calc professor could've asked for. clear, concise, + detail oriented notes; he posts lecture recordings AND notes so it's easy to look back on to review. he keeps class lighthearted and isn't super intense - still fully focused and on task. like it's calc so it's hard but he doesn't make it harder than it has to be. ily
I LOVE HIM. if u dont take him i prolly will for 17c
Lectures are clear, concise, and extremely helpful. Makes notes and recordings available, as well as plenty of office hours. Tests were straightforward and comparable to practice exams. Great calc prof and would take him again!
He was very thorough with explaining concepts and open to questions/feedback. His notes and lectures are easy to follow, both are posted on canvas after class. Discussion is not mandatory, but helpful if you want extra practice. Homework is pretty much free points, if you are stuck go to office hours/email him. Would take him again, if I could.
Amazing Professor. LITERAL GOAT.
I loved Prof Alameda- he is an amazing lecturer and so generous with his time. Offers many opportunities to get one-on-one help and his exams are super fair. Best math professor for the 17 series by far!
I took AP Calc ABC and multivariable calc in highschool and this prof taught me everything way better than any of my highschool teachers. Tests are very fair and sometimes reuse the homework and practice test problems.
I never leave reviews, but Professor Alameda has gone above and beyond as a Professor. Not only is he an amazing lecturer that makes complicated things feasible to understand and provides resources that are useful- but he just truly wants the best for his students and is communicative and supportive.Thats why his classes are the first to fill up:)
ACTUAL GOAT. he gave us a front and back cheat sheet (i think the department is not allowing him anymore though), exams are identical to practice exams, and he makes sure everything on the exam was taught in lecture. no surprises at all!! unlimited hw attempts on webwork. so GOOD i'm gonna miss him
He is still one of the best calc professors! Very thorough in his lectures and his office hours help A LOT! He really does care about his students and setting them up for success. Exams are very fair in terms of content but they're only out of 25 points so it can be really easy to get a lower score if you lose points on a problem. miss his class fr
Loved having him as my Math prof. His lectures are recorded so you dont have to go to class. He also posts his lectures notes which is great. He gave us a cheat sheet which I dont think he can do anymore but that definetly helped me pass. He tries to make test questions as simple and straight forward as possible and cares about his students.
Take him! Best calc prof I've had, he never threw any curve-balls on the tests and his office hours are so helpful.
Prof Alameda is by far one of the most kind and caring math professors at UCD. His lectures are well prepared & thoughtful, and his exams are super fair. Highly recommend doing the entire study guide given (it's very long, taken directly from the txtbook) but I got a 45% improvement from Midterm 1 to 2 just by doing that! Absolutely love Alameda!
Alameda is the goat. He has cheat sheets (we were the last quarter to have a full 8x11), curves graciously (I had a 56% canvas grade). He gave us homework 3 times a week to prepare us for his pretty difficult exams (if you can't tell, his curves were based on the averages from his exams). Fun and clear lecturer, really enjoyed his way of teaching.
Alameda has nicely structured lectures. He tends to work mostly outside of the textbook so the course is reliant on lectures, homework on WebQuest, and discussions. Loved taking Alameda's, he was lighthearted and witty. Exams were less applied to Bio than other profs' courses.
BEST MATH PROFESSOR! You get to use a page of notes on exams, and he is super accessible outside of class. Go to office hours!!!! He is so helpful and will help you understand the material/homework. Super clear and his exams are just like the study guides.
Genuinely one of the best math teachers/professors I've ever had. Had him for MAT17A and MAT 17B and got As in both. Makes concepts very clear and easy to understand, and is super helpful during office hours. Very friendly during office hours, where he goes over concepts from the homework or potential midterm/exam topics. Highly recommend.
A curve was promised. I was B-standing all quarter and before the final he had a meeting with the department about the curve. My grade dropped to a D despite getting an average score on the final. I'm currently fighting this with the department because it was so misleading !!!
Prof. Alameda has been one of the most easily approachable professors I've had, easy & fun to talk to outside of class. Super caring, and his teaching style is simple & straightforward, making Calc 2 accessible and easy to understand. Note that exams are 80% of the grade & I studied ahead of lecture a lot. (40% for midterms and 40% for final)
Professor Alameda is a great guy but not a great professor if you don't already know calc. He often struggled to explain things in a way that was clear if you weren't already familiar with the subject matter. It made the class really hard for me, and I benefited more from the co-classes and watching the (recorded!) lectures. Lots of extra credit.
I enjoyed this class a lot! His lectures and notes were very clear and helpful for exams. He let us have a cheat sheet for each exam, but his exams were straightforward on their own.
I'm not the best at math, and taking math classes at UCD were extremely difficult until I was able to take a class with prof Alameda. His lectures are phenomenal for people who learn by doing. He'll breifly talk about the concept of a topic, then actually doing multiple practice problems during lecture. Phenomenal professor and genuinely cares!
Tests were similar to homework, average curves, and good lectures. There are discussion section hw where you have to work in a group or else you get half credit but besides that it was an easy class. Alameda explains things very well but of course no matter how good you are, some people still fail the course.
i spent this whole class stressed out about low grades only to get hit by the math dept grading curve and end up just fine T_T andrew is great though! he's a very friendly and nice guy and i enjoyed his lectures. i feel he has trouble sometimes adequately explaining concepts to confused students, but most math teachers are like that.
I burnt myself out in winter quarter so I didn't try as hard as I could have, but the curve carried me from a B to an A. The mt's were pretty easy if you understood the hw. The lowest mt score of 2 gets dropped if you get a better grade on the final, but the final was much harder than the mt's. Hw after each lecture but grades rely mostly on tests.
Love professor Alameda. l took 17A and B and got A for both quarter, give curve after the final. Allow to bring a cheat sheet and provide practice and study guide.
Lectures were amazing. Went over every topic at a pretty slow rate and answered questions happily. Covered examples that were relevant to exam questions and homework assignments. Assignments were not difficult if you paid attention to lecture. Gives practice exams and curves grade at the end of the quarter.
Alameda is a great professor for the 17a series and teaches extremely well. Exams can be somewhat difficult but can easily be done if you do the study guide and practices given beforehand. On the contrary, the curve for the class can iffy depending on student performance. Overall, would take again as he is an amazing professor and a fair grader.
I felt Alameda taught well, however his exams threw curveballs compared to the practice exams we were given. He only gives 1 practice exam and questions don't really cover the variety shown in lectures or expected to know during exams. Previous classes got cheat sheets and we didn't which felt a bit unfair since exams are weighted 80% of our grade.
I liked this class a lot and Professor Alameda was good at explaining concepts. However, one thing I didn't like was that he never really went over hard problems in class. He would use easier to solve problems and then I would get to the homework and I wouldn't get it at all. Otherwise, I liked his lectures and he explained things very well.
Hes a kind & understanding prof. He extends hw if u ask before due date and is pretty lenient. U may see others reviews saying exams are a curveball but honestly, if you actually understand the concepts, you r capable of good grades on the exams. Yes it is harder than the practice exam he uploads but isn't that normal? U r def lucky if u get him!!
Dr. Alameda is a great professor and he cares a lot about student's comprehension of the workload. Exams are fair and usually are not curveballs to what they should be. Answers questions clearly and encourages participation. Weekly discussion worksheets are simple and easy to complete without prior AP Calculus experience.
Dr. Alameda's lectures were awesome and straight forward with his explanations and his lectures are recorded with his narration. Very clear on the grading policy and how the curve works in relation to his class. Great professor for anyone! The exams were similar to his posted practices and would clearly state what problem types to expect on exams.
Lowkey the GOAT. Tho i got a C, he is a great teacher and has clear lectures. His practice exams for sure will prepare you for the tests, just go over the hard problems more. If you pay attention to lectures and do LOTS of practice, you'll be fine. He's also super accessible outside class and emails! Amazing teacher for calc!!
Dr Alameda was great! sometimes he explained topics in a way i didnt understand but there's lots of resources online for 22A and he had a ton of office hours every week. he is super clear about expectations and what will/wont be on exams. his practice exams and the hw he assigned actually felt valuable for studying. looking forward to 22B with him!
Alameda is an incredible professor for 17A, his lectures were very organized and I would recommend attending as many as possible. I would also attend office hours even if you aren't struggling because he is a very cool guy. I would definitely choose him for any 17 series classes :)
Professor Alameda is a great teacher and a very nice guy. Explains things well and gives fair exams that are similar to the practice exam. 3 midterms and final is 80% of your grade so be ready to study. Go to his office hours he is very helpful.
Very thorough lectures with lots of example problems. Homework due for each section we covered, but there was plenty of time to do it and he would extend the due date if you asked in advance. 3 midterms and a final for 80% of the grade. 10% homework and 10% discussions which were mandatory. Do the practice exams and study guides and you will pass.
Dr. Alameda is a good lecturer. He is very specific and clear on what he teaches and what is provided on the exams. Do the practice exams; they are a little easier than the actual mid-terms but they have the same format. Discussion worksheets are also similar to the exam concept-wise. Just be careful for mid-term 3 it might increase in difficulty.
Very clear with his teachings, but lectures can be pretty fast-paced at times. If you took ap calc in high school, this class will be a breeze. He added an extra midterm for us in the beginning of the quarter and those materials were not even tested on the final. Other than that, he explained calc clearer than all the math teachers I had before.
Solid professor, especially for a "weeder" STEM course. He explains the content well in lectures and gives you practice materials before exams. Most of your grade is based on three midterms and one final -- HW and discussion worksheets generally reflect exam content. If you passed AP Calc in high school, then 17A with him should be very manageable.
