Dr. Andres was really great. Do the power points and the study guide and you'll do great.
Overall, you learn your material. He places an emphasis on his power point notes. Go to class and do the power points and you should be fine.
great person but horrible teacher
Dr. Andres is a great guy but his class is a little dry. He is always available to answer any questions you might have. If you feel you will need some guidance on the information in class I recommend him as an instructor.
There's a lot of information covered in this course, but Dr. Andres is a clear and structured lecturer and he covers it really well. His tests can have some sneaky questions, but for the most part they're fair. There are study guides, and he encourages people to see him if they're having trouble.
Dr. Andres is incredibly knowledgable. He taught us how to collect geodes in teh Hoosier National Forest, he taught us how to make pink lemonade from sumac trees, he fed us Lobster whil camping, and he shared the secret of the lotus bloom (it's not a shower head!). He is the Indiana Jones of UNLV!!!

He is monotone which makes his lectures boring. He is pretty fair, good lecture notes and review questions for his exams. Exams are fair and did curve 2 to 3% at the end. Overall, good professor.
Dr. Andres and Christine are always knowlegable and interesting. I like visiting, and sharing stories about the great outdoors. Dr. Andres has a cabin in Zion NP, and is looking to spend more time, and get more property there.
Class outline very structured but material was horrible.Andres is straightforward, helpful, but BEWARE if mol. genetics is not your forte! Was an experimental class so I really did myself in. Went to EVERY SINGLE lecture but still failed due to the breadth and speed of lecture.Half of exam is ESSAY!Have to attend lecture to get pwrpnt emailed to u.
This class is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of material to cover and the class moves at a pretty good pace. Be prepared to study and read the book in order to do well. The notes are available AFTER each class online. Can be monotonous, but is fairly clear. Quizzes every class. Recommend to those with a BIO background.
its a tough class for sure but its do-able if you do all the reading and actually take the time to really study. andres is a good teacher. explains things well.
Good teacher; he's helpful if you need him. i took it as an audit course... Tests are pretty hard, but doable... Lab is very important and will help you a lot. He's a pretty mellow guys, but sometimes shows humor in class...
This class covers a lot of material. In my opinion he is the best teacher to have. He always encourages students to see him during his office hours and answers all the questions asked during class to his best ability. Lectures and study guides are provided, but you must read the book to fully understand all the concepts.
He's a great professor. He's extremely helpful, very knowledgeable, and really wants his students to pass. He puts the powerpoints from class online and he also puts up study guides. I would definately recommend him.
This teacher is boring and instead of teach the class he reads the power points and then creates SUPER HARD EXAMS. Attendance is a must because he quizzes every class.Questions are answered really fast . I do not recommend him. I wish this class was online with videos so I don't have to wake up 6 am to listen him reading the power points.
In response to the comment below..."He reads the power points and then creates SUPER HARD EXAMS"?????... His exams are almost verbatim from his notes. The exam requires students to be able to recall memorized information, which is the lowest level of thinking. How big of a spoon do you need?
Andres is great, his tests are right from his notes! He is super nice and helpful. The only downside is the iClicker, which is so stupid - everybody hates it and it is a waste of class time. Overall I really like him hope I get to take him again. If you think his tests are hard, YOU should choose another major!!!
This class is a hard topic, but the notes he posts are incredible. They are so thorough, that you really just need the book for clarification. Attendance is mandatory, but if you come almost everyday, you get some extra credit. No curve. He's kinda boring to listen to in class, but if you don't understand something, he's helpful at office hours
Dr. Andres is the best biology teacher at UNLV. He has extensive background in the field and deserves to teach at a much more revered institution - those who don't agree probably don't really enjoy biology!
Go to class almost all of test questions on his power point and he puts out studdy guides which can be time consuming but very worth it. Very interesting yet very hard. Don't need book.
Genetics is a very interesting subject. Take him, spend the time to study his notes, and attend lectures for participation and extra credit points. His exams are multiple choice and short answer essay questions. Pretty fair except that his wording in multiple choice can sometimes get tricky... so read them carefully!
This teacher cannot teach. I wish one day the power would be out just to see if he remember all his power point notes. He needs to read it every class and forces you to go because of the I Clicker. I could just read it at home and do well without having to listen to him at 8:30 am. What a boring and useless teacher.
Horrible teacher, lazy teacher, reads the power points notes only. He sucks, he is ****, select some students and help them, but ignore others. Boring.. Bring a strong cup of coffee to class. His exams are not easy. Half essay and half multiple choice. Find old exams and you will find some similar question. Final not so hard with extra credit.
Let me just tell you what you are getting yourself into with this professor. When it comes to test taking, the answers are mostly from his noter....BUT, they are not clear if you don't read the book and take your own notes. If you feel like getting treated like a 5 year old where he is constantly telling you to be quiet, stop talking, leave the
It?s true. He will call out any student who continuously disrupts his class with a ringing cell phone, loud talking, or who likes to leave after every extra-credit point. Although I am sure he would much rather ignore these insults, he has no choice because a number of other students have complained about the behavior of these few. Their logic,
Though his lectures may be boring, he is clear and precise. He has a good sense of humor and is willing to help students out if they seek his help. Go to every class because clicker questions will help you out in the long run. Tests are a bit hard but not impossible. Study his powerpoint notes!
everyone giving a bad rating to Dr. Andres did NOT study. if you STUDY his notes, it's so easy to get an A. Lazyness can't be tolerated if you want an A. you do need to refer to the book on pictures only, or for some clarity, but 95% of exam is straight from notes. i defnitely recommed him!
He is a very fair teacher. I did not find the study guides as useful as just studying his power points because they were pretty straight forward. He did yell at the people the were talking over him which was distracting. I wish that he would have made an example of first person who did it and ejected them from the room.
Easy BIOL course, study the notes, the book is useless in my opinion. I studied the day before each test and got an A easily. he assumes anyone talking over him has question so you will hear him say alot; "QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS....anybody?"
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CLASS!! A lot of info to learn, too much for one semester. You cannot just memorize, you have to have a deep understanding of the concepts presented. His lectures get boring. He is helpful if you go to him but he speaks in terms not known to "common people." The test questions are VERY VERY TRICKY! Study hard, and you'll do OK.
This class is pretty simple, test every 6 lectures and he offers many opportunities for extra credit. Study the notes and an A is attainable.
This class is very hard mostly due to the content that you need to learn. The tests are difficult in the wording of the questions. There is a lot of "which of these is true/false" and the choices can be difficult too choose from. But he does drop the lowest test score. He also uses iclicker for extra credit. My advice is to study as much as you can
He is easy to understand and his tests come directly from the notes. But the class does require a good amount of studying. He also provides opportunities for extra credit and drops your lowest exam grade, which is really helpful. He is not very personable though and his voice starts to bore you about halfway through lecture. However, I say take him
Awful, awful professor. Please, save yourself the money and DO NOT take this class. He is so boring, expects you to learn way too much material for each exam. His study guides are overwhelming. UNLV needs another bio 196 professor. Dr. Andres talks in technical terms always and NEVER simplifies anything. He discouraged me from a bio minor. THAT BAD
I highly recommend this teacher. Study his powerpoints and you will ace the tests. He drops 1 test and gives extra credit. I'm a biology major and compared to other professors, Dr. Andres is awesome. He really cares that his students learn the info. You just have to study hard. Bio is not a class where you get an A just handed to you.
Dr. Andres does his best to help his students do well. Exams are based on the powerpoints, but it doesn't mean that the class is an easy A. Pay extra attention to the powerpoints! Textbook may be used for clarifications if needed. He offers extra credit, so attending class is recommended. Definitely a great instructor and is always there for help.
Don't bother buying the book. Memorize his powerpoints. Attendance is a must because of iclicker points. Cumulative part of final is same from the first three exams. Excellent Professor!
Lazy students get lousy grades. If you're committed to learn, then you will have no problem getting an A in the class. You can't just memorize slides and expect to do good on the exams. In order to get an A, you need to understand the main concept, read the slides and go to office hours to ask for help if you can't understand a topic.
Good all-around professor. He is quick about grading and offers e.c. for attendance. His lectures are well-organized and he makes his powerpoints available online. He will make jokes in lecture and encourage questions, but don't even think about talking out of turn or being disruptive...he will stop the class and call you out. I recommend him.
Very informative and useful class. Dr. Andres is very helpful. Just study the notes and an A is manageable.
Great professor. Notes are clear. Lectures are clear. Took it during the summer and got an A. He posts all notes online. Overall if you do your part in studying what he gives you then you'll be getting an A.
Dr. Andres is a really great teacher! Study his powerpoints (and vocab) and youll do fine. His lectures can get boring half way in but taking my own notes on top of his slides fixed that. He gives iClicker points (some for attendance or extra credit) plus theyre a good gauge for how he words his tests. Would take a class from him again for sure! :D
wants students to do well, willing to help but tests are impossible and worded horribly
One of the top professors in the biology department at UNLV. Brilliant professor! Material can be very difficult but his organization and teaching make it easy to comprehend. Tests aren't easy and require you to think and actually study. Highly recommend Dr. Andres!
Dr. Andres is on the top professors in the biology department at UNLV. He is absolutely brilliant! Highly recommend him to anybody. If you wanna learn genetics take Andres. An "A" is absolutely feasible if you study and understand his notes.
Dr. Andres is probably the most brilliant Biology professor at UNLV. Genetics is one of the hardest biology classes to comprehend but Andres really breaks it down for you. Study the notes and go to class and you shouldn't have any trouble with an A or B. Andres lectures may get a little boring but you won't ever have a better professor than him!
Very hard class but Dr. Andres does his best to clarify. Very fair grading
Brilliant professor but lectures are inccredibly boring. Puts you to sleep. He does his tests a certain way so you need some time to get the hang of it. Questions are similar to the i-clicker questions that he gives in class. Study powerpoints and you should be fine.
Dr. Andres is a really good professor. The subject matter for Molecular Genetics is pretty dry, but he does a good job of stimulating interest from the students. Attendance is optional, but he gives extra credit from i-clicker q's, so going to class is highly recommended. Plus his tests come pretty much straight from his powerpoints and lectures
Dr. Andres is an incredible professor but the material this would not very much make sense unless you have taken a principles of genetics class. Too bad for the students that the better ones among the two TA's for this class only taught 1 section as compared to the 4 sections of the not so good TA.
Very helpful professor. Tests are based off lectures, nothing on exams is a surprise. If you study your notes and his study guides, you will get an A. If you don't understand something, just ask, he is very approachable and clarifies well. Has kind of a stale voice, but also has great jokes! Extra credit iClicker questions help with grade and tests
Very clear in lectures, provides lots of examples, great note structure, helpful study guides and PowerPoints, tells you what will be on exams. Extra credit for attendance, funny guy, will reiterate as much as necessary and won't move on until everyone understands. Makes himself available for his students. Highly recommend.
Prof. Andres expects his students to ask for help when needed and to do their part in earning a good grade. With that bring said, he's easily accessible for questions and provides clarity and examples when needed. His exams make you think, but they aren't overly hard.
He makes his tests very fair. He's helpful and cares a lot about his students doing well. He gives extra credit which helps a little bit of the class but appreciate a professor that will actually give E.C. His tests are hard and make you think, always took me to the end of the class. Only downside is his monotone voice. Need more profs like him!
He's a great professor and has gone to a LOT of work gathering data/info for lectures. I really appreciated that he releases his notes on WebCampus. Exams are tricky! You must really know the material... like really, REALLY know it. Discussion w/Greg helped clarify concepts.
I took Andres for 304 and really enjoyed his straightforward approach as a professor. He clearly covers everything in lecture and give the students tools to succeed. Cancer Cell is a time consuming class and he expects students to learn a lot independently. He welcomes questions and gives informative, unbiased lectures. GREAT professor!
This class requires a lot of self-motivation and study time. Dr. A expects a lot from his students in this class. If you want a very unique approach to learning about research papers and advancements in oncology, take this class. It's certainly not an easy A.
Great teacher. Very clear and organized. Some funny moments, but class was usually boring. Book is useless. If you really know the material on the study guide you will be prepared for the test. 1st exam is the easiest, if you don't study enough 2nd/3rd exams will be rough. On the final he doesn't change the old test questions as much as he says.
One of the best professors i've had at UNLV. He is very helpful, exams are based off of the powerpoints, gives i-cklicker extra credit, the discussions help alot since you get to see the material more than once. Getting an A is very attainable if you put in a little effort. All in all really good professor i highly recommend him!
I wish all biology classes were structured like this. Here's the equation for success: go to class, use your iclicker, take notes from the powerpoint, study for discussion, and study for exams. If you know everything that is on the powerpoints, you'll score 90-100% on every exam. He is very fair and straightforward.
Easily one of the best, most interesting classes I took at UNLV. Prof. Andres puts a lot of time and research into the lectures. Do the reading and go to office hours if you need help. Prof. Andres one of the best instructors at UNLV.
This class gets you ready for graduate level learning whether it be med school, PhD, or whatever. The papers are very advanced and require you to independently dive in. The final paper was a beast so definitely plan ahead. Don't let subpar exam grades discourage you b/c he let's you make it up in other areas. Not an easy class but it's enjoyable.
This is my third class with Andres and I loved how different this one was. I was so interested in this class. The papers can be rough but after you go through them they are not so bad. You do a cancer presentation and read a mock grant proposal. This has been my favorite class in my academic career! Wish there was a part two.
He is a great professor! I don't know why some people complained about him. He clarifies anything that is not understood. The study guides he provides are extremely helpful. The lab is worth a large chunk of your grade and is very easy. iClicker points also help. Study hard and you will do great!
He's a great lecturer for teaching immunology and the material is beyond fair and really quite interesting. But his testing method is 50 short answer questions and frankly, If had the ability to write faster, probably would've done better in this class. It didn't come down to my mastery of the material rather than how fast can you write legibly
I took Andres for 304 and took him again for 453 because I really respect how fair and straightforward he is. One drawback was that just going to class was 20% of your grade. So if you miss one class you kinda dig yourself a hole. Practice writing fast! His tests were written and unlike 304 the questions came from lecture dialogue not just notes.
Had him for 304 and again for 453. For 453, his tests are LONG, since they consist of 50 short answer questions. Plus side: it was all open notesopen book, and he only tested on things he talked about in class. Lecture recordings are great to have. Relisten to the lectures, annotate the powerpoints, and bring a book to look up anything specific.
The class material is extremely dry, but Dr. Andres always did his best at trying to make the material relevant. His powerpoints are organized well but often they were difficult to follow, so recordings are a must. The extra credit also is nice, and saved my grade from a B. The extra credit quizzes really help reinforce concepts.
Tests are beastly 50 short answer. I am glad he isn't teaching this again. I miss Nika.
This class is not difficult if you study correctly and take advantage of discussion. He's straightforward with what he wants you to know. DO THE STUDY GUIDES. They are the exams. Recording his lectures and listening to them again was helpful. The final exam was a joke - super easy! Show up to class for the extra credit i-Clicker questions.
He's wonderful and brilliant! Do well on the discussions! They'll prepare you for the exam and help your grade! Also, go to class and do the iclicker questions for the EC. It helps so much when you're on the borderline! Final was really easy and the short answer was truly big picture. Class material is very interesting and he showed documentaries:)
Dr. Andres is awesome! He gives out lengthy study guides for all of his tests which is extremely helpful because the material on the exams is DENSE. He wants everyone to pass. This became one of my favorite classes and learned a ton.
Dr. Andres is one of the best professors at UNLV. For the graduate level class, we had to give a lecture on a chapter and paper of our choosing and take short response exams. Altogether, this class is highly informative, intriguing, and beneficial to my future career in science. I highly recommend taking immunology with him!
professor andres was great. His tests are based on lectures, so no surprises there. The exams are dense. I learned a lot from this professor, I should've waited and taken 304 with him! He is awesome take him.
Immunology is VERY DENSE but interesting. Dr. Andres explains the concepts really well. He gives out 3 exams and a non cumulative final (format is same for all exams -- MC, short responses, and matching). Go to his office hours because he's always willing to help. Record his lectures and study the ppts. Excited to take him for Genetics next sem!!!
AMAZING professor. Very organized lectures, PowerPoints have everything you need (I didn't touch the book). Extra credit available, exams are medium/difficult, but fair. Go to discussion/do well on quizzes to solidify topics. If you study enough, you should have no problem getting a good grade. Ended up really enjoying this class!
Good professor, with that said do not choose straight letters when you get to vote. It's a lie that if you are borderline the prof. will bump you up. It holds true with other professors in Bio 304. Tip #2: The exams are nationally standardized, so go out there and find test banks. Exams are worded to trick you (Ex. Which one is most FALSE?)
His tests come literally word for word from the powerpoint. He also provides extremely detailed study guides. It's important to come to class because an attendance sheet is passed around. Genetics can be a bit of a dry subject but Andres tries his best to make it interesting. Tests are 50 questions long and very detailed, but completely doable.
Dr. Andres is actually a really good professor if you use the class to its full potential. To do well, pay attention in lecture and record them, and then go home and listen to the lectures over again and take notes. When tests roll around, make sure you know the concepts on the study guides, and you should be good to go.
Dr. Andres is a great professor. He's very knowledgeable about genetics and his tests are taken directly from his lectures so study those really well. Make use of discussion as it helps clarify concepts. Make sure you try to actively learn the material too since it could be a really dry subject sometimes. Also he gives extra credit so go to class!
Course covers an obscene amount of material. He knows his stuff, though he's not the most interesting character in lectures. Slides are sufficient for learning the material; he's usually able to explain the concepts well enough that you shouldn't need to crack open your textbook.
There is a lot of material to grasp, but it is doable. It requires so much time to prepare yourself for his tests. He even told me that he creates the tests based off the PowerPoints without the need of a textbook. His tests are his PowerPoints so study that. Discussion helps greatly in clarifying concepts so don't skip and do well on quizzes.
You have to truly understand Immunology to get a good grade in his class. The material is dense, although the tests mostly focus on the bigger picture. The 2nd half of class was fun - you get to read scientific articles & actually understand them thanks to his lectures.
Dr. Andres is a great instructor. He made the class as clear and succinct as possible but the subject matter is dense especially if taken during the summer. Study the slides very well and use the textbook if extra explanation is needed but the powerpoints should be good enough. This class is difficult so be prepared to study a lot.
andres knows genetics extremely well, but his tests are very hard. obviously you need to understand the material, but you basically need to memorize every bullet point in the powerpoints to do well. his test averages were very low and there's no curve. the material is very dry and can get confusing but the discussion book helps a lot
Andres is a great guy, he knows what he's talking about, and he's willing to answer any questions in his office, if you also have an idea of what you're talking about. His class is 3 multiple choice exams&1 cumulative final (MC &short answer), and the discussion class is 30% of your grade. He does not curve, but a ton of extra credit for attendance
Andres is a wonderful professor. The content itself is difficult & dense, BUT it's manageable. I recommend recording lecture & going back to it later because the slides themselves sometimes dont make sense & his explanations from class do wonders. If you do that, you won't really need to look at the textbook. Attend class and get extra credit hehe
Dr. Andres is the best! By far the best option for genetics. A tough class overall due to the material being so dense but he is a very fair instructor. The exams are lecture based so the textbook is not really necessary. Discussion is very beneficial in clarifying concepts and can help your grade a lot. Offers extra credit for attending class.
This was a challenging but informative class. Despite what others say, the textbook is very, very helpful. Myself and my three friends who used the textbook received As. My friends that did not use it mostly did not do as well. Take your time when taking his exams, he will often give big hints like using the word ribosome in a transcription q.
Content was dense, but the questions on the exam were fair. He was also pretty lenient on free responses too. Use the slides and you should be fine (I didnt use the study guide or book). Averages for the exams were around 70-76% and there are some opportunities for E.C. via optional quizzes (was enough to bump up peoples grades by 2%). Take him!
Andres is a great professor. While he is monotone, youll learn a lot with him! Took him for immunology over summer and i loved it! Graded by 4 exams (final not cumulative) and some extra credit. Take him!! Youll learn a ton! Materials for exams can be found on lecture slides-- better to go to him with questions than the book... its useless. FUN!
I took him over the summer, and his class is definitely not something you can breeze through. His lectures aren't the most interactive, but they're super interesting. I learned so much in this class. If you genuinely take the time to study the material, you'll do fine! Also, his extra credit is insanely helpful, don't take it for granted!
He will answer any question you have, no matter how dumb it is. His study guides are great; if you can answer every practice question on his study guide you will get an A in his class, but be prepared to dedicate about 5 - 7 hours a day (summer term). The book is very good (pdf is free), even though it's not required, it has very good explanations
He offers simultaneous Webex and uploads to his in-person classes, so you don't have to go to class. Immunology might be one of the hardest undergraduate classes and covers an insane amount of material (entire Kuby's immunology book) in 4 weeks. At the end of the class, you get to read actual papers, which was very cool. Good luck!
Dr. Andres is pretty great but the course itself needs some changing. You have to do a 2 hour presentation on a research paper (alone), every week you have to write a 700 word summary on the presentation that was presented the week prior by another student & you MUST participate in class for 10 points those make a big difference in your grade.
