Hard grader but you learn a lot. Cool to take.
good teacher but very very hard grader...........avoid him
easy teacher. you might learn less in the class but getting good grade is easy
Incompetent
Great teacher, very wonderful person, very kind and helpful. But he is a hard grader, sometimes too hard, but I learned a lot from him and I think its worth it. Yes, if I have the chance I will take more classes from him.
He's a very challenging teacher and a pretty hard grader. However, he is extremely helpful and is more than willing to guide you to excel in his class. Make sure to do the assigned readings to earn max points on quizzes, and start early on your research papers! He's one of the greatest English professors I've had.
He is helpful, but hard grade.
Mr. Varbel is an excellent English teacher. He is very helpful to his students and will encourage you to excel in class. He is approachable and I dont hesitate to register again to any of his classes. M.Y.
Before taking his class I didn't like english writing at all. But now I have gained so much confidence in writing an essay. His instructions are very clear. The group discussions are not only fun-filled, but also helpful in understanding the readings and working on the assignments.
Mr. Varbel is a wonderful teacher! He is very approachable and helpful to all his students. At times he can be a hard grader, but if you ask what you went wrong on, he is more than willing to help you correct it, so that it doesnt happen in the future. I truly enjoyed his class and would take him class again!
he sucks dont take him there are more easier teachers that give less than half the work he does
He's nice and doesn't hesitate to answer all the questions you give him about the lesson.
Mr. Varbel is very low key. Very easy when it comes to grading papers and quizzes. Lots of reading, because its an English class. Assigned a lot of homework and lots of discussion in class. One group presentation. Group discussions every class meeting. I learned a lot from this class. Do not take this class if you are not willing to do a lot of hw.
Mr. Varbel was a wonderful teacher always willing to aid you if you are unclear with anything. He is extremely optimistic and is really helpful towards helping you succeed. The only problem I really encounter was the amount of writing he expected in your essays. His grading may be a bit hefty and he also assigned a 8 to 10 page research paper.
He is a very good teacher. He makes sure you are heard everytime you ask something and explains to you very clearly. Very flexible. No day the class didn't have fun. He has his own website. http://varbelenglish.tripod.com/id11.html
He is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. He is very open to questions and will make sure he clarifies things you don't understand before moving on. He is very interactive with students and will make sure to get your opinion/question out there. He gives a fair amount of homework, mostly reading, and occasionally some essays.
Mr. Varbel--very chill teacher. Easy-going and straightforward with how the class will go. Very clear with instructions and never hesitates to answer a student's question. READ the book(s) and other readings. Do all the work and participate in class. Complete essays including rough drafts. Nice guy, just go to class do the work. You'll be fine.
He is a very helpful and nice teacher. I recommend doing the homework and reading the books or you will fall behind. He doesn't play favoritism he is fair to all. If you ever need help just go and ask he will be more than happy to help you understand the topic. :)
Really cool teacher. Very helpful and patient. Be prepared to read a LOT! His class can easily be boring and long too. He often bring food in class if you take the night class. So bring food on your own since you'll get hungry.
So far halfway through the sp12 semester. Professor Varbel is nice and very helpful. There's A LOT of work, essays, Lots of readings, and quizzes. Do not procrastinate on anything. A lot harder than Eng 1A obviously. Many group discussions and some what of a hard grader on essays but he let's you know how to fix it and be a more precise writer.
Been my favorite teacher as mission so far. Very sweet and very helpful. If you have any questions just ask and he'll help you out. The hardest part of the class was the 8 page research paper (but you could write it on whatever you want. Also, The final will be easy if you read the book.
He is a very nice and helpful professor. Eng 1B isnt a breeze, it's very challenging and there's a lot of work, reading, and essays. It may seem like he overhauls it but in the end you can see your improvement and know that you can write a GOOD college level essay. I'd recommend him, however he gives; I think a little too much work. Tough but nice
By far this course was the hardest classes I ever had. Since Eng is my second language, I was not comfortable in writing essays. However, I got an A. Mr. Varbel is very kind and nice. He pays attention to your attendance and in class participations. Weekly quizzes are easy and helpful in accumulate points toward your final grade. I recommond him.
Professor Varbel is very polite and is always there for you before/after class if you need help or have questions. Attendance is mandatory and there is homework every week, lots of reading. 3 out of class essays, 1 Research Paper, and 2 In-Class essays. I learned a lot and improved as a writer.
This is the best english teacher that i ever had!!! Love him!!!
Andy is a fair and nice guy but isn't easy. Lots of reading every week. Quiz questions are easy as long as you read the material. Papers can be somehow intimidating. You will actually learn stuff from him. Follow his guidelines and should be an easy B. You will need to write very good paper in order to get an A in his class!
Great prof- see him during office hrs, show an interest, he will help you out- edit papers before submitting. Takes the time to help students. Good engaging discussions in class, makes it fun to be there. Lots of work but worth it- grades fair and consistent which is important in an english class IMO. Def take him-great eng prof.
By far, he's the best English 1a teacher. His lecture are extremely helpful and useful. Always use his office hours if you want to get an A in this class.
This professor is the best proffesor, that all i can say. just go to class and do your essay according to his rubric. Dont skip classes. His class is so damn easy if you go to class. i am so dumb in english but still this professor make my english 1b so easy
Prof. Varbel is a great but slightly unorganized. Multiple reading assignments with quizzes asking specific questions pertaining to the passages wkly. 5 essays were assigned throughout the smstr 1 in class and he does not grade easily. He does care deeply about his students and is available for any q''s. Use his office hours and ask for help
Andy is an overall good professor and I definitely would take a class with him again. He doesn't give out much homework and you can get away with not reading every night. However, you need to read the night before a Quiz. He follows his syllabus schedule day by day without skipping a beat so you know what you're in for. Pretty decent grader.
Very sweet and helpful. Never puts a student down.
I have taken Andy's class twice and I am planning tool aie him again for English 1B. The downside is that his classes are always in the evenings on Mondays or Wednesdays. You do need to read because he gives quizzes and if you read, you will pass. He keeps everything super simple and to the point. Just do your best and you'll pass. Great teacher.
Andy, is an awesome Instructor. You have to be an idiot and not showing up to flunk this class. The reading for ENG1A is Catfish & Mandala, Good book, and a lot of the quizzes in this class are based off the book. He does like to break the class into groups which cuts down on the boring down time. If you are looking for an easy A, take this class!
He's easy.
I took English1A with him and he was very helpful. He likes to do group discussions. He was very easy to talk to and his grading system is very reasonable. I highly recommend him. He is a great English teacher!
Contradicts himself a lot. Confusing. Did not learn anything, and also did a lot of work and was not given credit.
I took Andy's English 1A during the evenings once a week. He is a tough teacher. He will make you read a lot, and then give you quizzes on the reading. You will have to attend class or else participation points are deducted. You will occasionally sit in a group, and will discuss the reading material. Be prepared to do a lot of work.
good teacher, if your bad at writing take tutor and you should do good. i went from a D to a B writer and i suck at writing!
Andy has a sense of humor and knows how to teach a class, He does assign essay after essay but at the end of the semester you have learned a lot. If you put the work in it, you will get an easy A. Do not skip class, show up on time. He like students who participate in class, Andy is understand and will listen. I would take him again!
I took Varbel for Eng 1A, he is great instructor, knows how to teach the material. He does assign plenty of essays, some take home, but what Eng teacher doesn't? Put the work in it and you should receive an A.
Andy is a great professor. He's very straight forward and doesn't try to trick you. If you improve during his class, he will reward you. Andy is an overall quality teacher. You honestly can't ask for a better instructor. Listen, learn, and participate. If you apply yourself, you will feel more confident about your writing and analytical thinking
Andy is a good teacher, he's really nice and he can be a very understanding one too. His lectures I'll admit, are a little dry, but his class is straightforward. Expect a lot of journal entries and pop quizzes for his class but I would definitely take his class again.
Prof Andy is honestly a really good teacher and easy to get along with. With that said however before selecting his class know that you HAVE to attend all classes and do ALL the work in order to pass. He gives multiple quizzes and if you miss one he does not allow you to retake it. No Matter What. If you're looking for an easy teacher, he isn't it
Mr. Varbel is a good instructor. He gives a lot of readings. He is tough grader. He provides help after class during office hour. It is not an easy A, but if a student works on it, A can be earned. Many readings. This is college English. Be prepared.
Honestly, people who complain probably are not putting in the work. There is definitely a lot of work, but nothing out of the ordinary. He gives you the hw schedule ahead of time, quiz every class. Just do your homework and show up on time, and you'll be fine. As far as professor Varbel goes, he is really kind and understanding.
Professor Varvel is a good teacher, but he is a tough grader. He will make you read a lot in his class. There are 12 journals, 3 main essays to submit online, one research paper, 6 pop up quizzes, the final is an essay in class, and so many articles and essays to read. As long as you do all homework, you can pass.
he is most tough and grader in my life his homework assignment which is on the syllabus did not work he always update on canvas and in class by verbal if you did something did catch what he update he gave you zero not even partial point which is most unfair things to you there is no peer review since you turn in once
once i did not turn in my HW on time he gave me non credit after i talked him in person he still keep strict in his mind .Therefore my grade from A down to B.I do not recommend anyone take him cuz all my essay i got A however just in homework assignment i got B for my overall which is funny
honestly ,i dont recommend people take his class because his homework pretty heavy most funny thing is he always update homework from online and never mention in the class he is pretty strict and anti kind and anti understanding . Personally i did feel respect from him and he treat anyone not equal and unfair..
He is a good teacher, but grades rather hard on essays. The final is an in-class essay, but he grades that one more leniently. There is a group project, but that was not very difficult, and you are individually graded. He has "pop quizzes" but he informs you ahead of time when they will be. The only negative is harsh grader on the first 3-4 essays.
Varbel is a great teacher, but he is a harsh grader. Wish he lets us redo our essays for a better grade. Gives a boatload of homework and then gives a quiz next lecture. Looking for an EASY A/B, DON'T take his class. Only take his class if you're highly motivated to do the work.
He is a nice professor. Keeps his class simple and straightforward. There are open-note 'pop' quizzes but he usually tells when they are. 3 take home essays, 1 Research Paper and Final in class essay. One group project and one extra credit assignment. Make sure to read the assigned reading, other than pop quizzes, there would be discussions.
If you have the option to choose another professor, do it. Grades tough on essays unless youre a good writer. His expectations are clear but you dont learn anything from his classes. He assigns a group presentation that is useless. There are readings that are due every class + pop quizzes that are pointless. Also, classes lack excitement.
Great teacher. Show up on time, do your homework, and ask for help. Take advantage of the office hours.
he's a great teacher, just do all the work ON TIME and you'll pass his class. I recommend going to his office hours for extra help to understand what he wants exactly in the essays.
He gave us clear grading criteria and gave us tips on how to get an A. We read the full "The Refugees" book, and some short stories from another. Has 250 word journals due almost every class, and 2-3 take home essays. The final was an in class essay. Get feedback from him before turning in essays, he's super helpful! Thank you Prof Varbel!
I strongly recommend you to take class with anther professor. He is really restricted about the grades. There is lots of homework, pop up quizzes, essays and Journal.
Watch out English 1A students! It is really tough to pass this course with prof Andy varbel. Too much assignment and tests. He is checking essays word by word, line by line and paragraph by paragraph. If you missed a coma in your sentence he will take off point from your grade. By the way the final in class essay he is taking supper serious.
Andy is one of the toughest teacher I have ever seen. He is not friendly and respectful to students grades. He is not good at all when he is grading your paper such as popup quizzes and essay.I don't recommend you to take Eng1A with him.
Professor Varbel is an amazing teacher. He is straight forward with what is expected on quizzes and essays. All quizzes are based on the readings and they are open note! Overall, he is not strict and is always willing to help. Tip: visiting office hours improved my essay grades a lot so this is a way to know your teacher and do well in the course.
2 books used. Journals + open-note pop quizzes based on readings. 3 essays + 1 research paper (take-home), 1 final essay (in-class). Tough essay grader unless youre a good writer. No midterms. 1 small group project w/ presentation. Very few extra credit opportunities given. Class often lacks enthusiasm and is always so boring.
I'm not going to lie, I took this class my first year of college and transitioning from high school to college I still had the high school mindset of participate, get most of what you need to do done and you'll pass mindset. I did to be honest with you, the bare minimum & I still passed with a C. You'll read 3 books, don't bother getting brown book
It is easy to pass and get good grade in Eng 1A if you are taking with some another professor BUT not with Andy Varbel. He will make you heartbroken at the end of the day. Toughest prof I have ever seen. I as a non native English speaker didn't go well this course.
He gives great lectures. He gives second chances for assignments. He has been doing that and continues to do so. He would be one the your best choices.
Hey everyone! I took Andy's class Spring 2020 and it was a breeze! With minimum effort you are certain to pass! He provides more than enough feedback and explanations! The whole concept is to write 3 essays of which you can even rewrite them. As a person that's not a native English speaker, I've got A+. Lovely and caring professor!
I've taken both ENG1A and ENG1B with Andy and in Fall I'll be taking ENG1C with him also! He's truly a real gem that cares for his students and provides as much help as he possibly can. He even gives you an option to rewrite your essays, which makes the class so much fun and easy!
Spring 2020 I took his class ENG001A and Summer I knew I would continue with him throughout my educational journey! Wonderful and caring professor! In 1A he allows rewrites for the essays and has always spent extra time out of class to those with questions. As a student that is not native English speaker, I've got an A in both 1A and 1B easily.
Profesor Varbel was very nice and easy going. I honestly enjoyed taking Eng1B with him:) His work load was manageable and he makes sure to teach relatable criteria so you always feel connected to the work. The class doesnt feel like a work load it feels like a refreshing environment to reconnect. I took this class online. I very much recommend.
I took ENG 1B with Andy Varbel and it was my easiest class by far. The reason for that is professor Varbel's guiding skills and his quick replies to all students that have questions. It is rare to meet a professor like him - he is like a parent and a best friend! As for the class, 3 essays and some extra credit. Easy A+
I really enjoyed taking ENG 1B with Professor Varbel! He was super specific in his feedback and was always available to answer questions from students. His teaching style was very encouraging and supportive. He also invited authors to do guest readings, which I found to be a very creative way to keep the class interactive, despite it being online.
The absolute best! Took English 1A with him a while ago and had an amazing experience. He's super sweet and understanding. He's super willing to help you revise your essays. His grading is the usual, and you should do well on his assignments if you pay attention and read the books. Got to pick our own topic for the final. Thank you, Professor!
He is a very nice person and I really like how teaches his class. There's a lot to read and write, but they are manageable. He also gives good feedback and let you rewrite one of your essay for a higher score. As long as you do your work on time, you'll be fine.
Andy is the best English professor I have ever had. He is friendly and responsive. His assignments are fair and comfortable. I had 4 essays throughout the course plus 1 final essay which are around 80% of your grade. He also gives you an opportunity to rewrite your essays to improve your grades after his feedbacks.
Varbel is a super easy teacher and responds to emails right away. He is an easy grader. I took him for english 1A and decided to take him for english 1B because of how reasonable the hw is. Hw for both classes were 1 page reflection a week and a dq post. Essays are once a month and gives great feedback. Take Varbel!
Hands down the best English teacher I had at Mission College. He is so kind, understanding and caring. Very lenient on late work and assignments are easy. There are only four easy essays throughout the course and one discussion post every week. Class is overall easy. TAKE HIS CLASS, you won't regret it!
Very great class, easygoing! One journal and discussion post a week, with about 4 essays spread out the semester! He is very clear with examples given on previous essays, good grader and ORGANIZED! Not too many assignments, no long lectures! Take this class, you will no regret it! I am taking another of his classes next semester!
LATE START ASYNCHRONOUS CLASS! Very easygoing. Most of the class is just writing assignments and analysis of the readings he provides. No complaints.
This professor is one of the most hard-working professors I've had. He does not use Turnitin, but reads the essays himself and gives very good feedback. There are 4 Essays that are not difficult. weekly discussions and journals which are not hard. You just need to do the readings he assigns which are not too lengthy.
Professor Varbel is understanding and kind. He's not a tough grader and often extends deadlines. He's really nice and you can tell he loves his job and actually cares about his students. The class consisted of weekly journal entries and discussion posts with three essays.
Andy Varbel is one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. He is a fantastic teacher and gives excellent feedback. If you want to become a better writer, I suggest taking his class.
HES SO NICE IMMA MISS HIM
Professor Varbel is one of the best English 1A professors at Mission college, There are 4 papers and 11 journals in this class which are kinda of easy if you follow the instructions, He even recommend me a movie in the start of the semester which I took in the fall, overall very nice I would take another class with him again in the future 10/10 :).
Mr. Varbel is a great professor very understanding and clear in his lectures. While he does assign quite a few essays, the workload is manageable as long as you stay on top of it. There's rarely a break from writing, but the assignments are never too difficult and always doable. I definitely recommend him!
Mr. Varbel is a hidden gem! I wish I could take more classes with him! He provides opportunities to revise your work and also gives outstanding feedback how you can improve. Furthermore, he incorporates relevant texts and assignments that truly matter. He is always there for you and I strongly recommend reaching out to him if you struggle!
Prof Varbel was one of the best English teachers that I have ever had. There were 4 main essays with a lot of time to do them, even in class. There are many extra credit opportunities and you are able to revise your essay if given a bad grade! Such a caring teacher I felt appreciated in his class. Also, essay topics are relatively self-chosen!
I took this class in Spring 2025. Professor Varbel is great, very kind and understanding. His assignment are not too hard as long as you don't complete them at the last minute. He is very clear on grading and on using MLA format. Overall super nice and I felt that my writing improved in his class.
Varbel is a phenomenal professor. He gives clear feedback and even revisions for essays. His assignments are straightforward and if you ever feel lost he is always open to questions. The essays truly develop critical thinking skills that focus more on articulation and creativity rather than the grades. Need that 1B credit? Take Varbel.
Varbel is an AMAZING professor. He gives very clear feedback on all homework assignments, grades super quick and is really easy to access outside of class as well. We had weekly Journals (250 word "essays" analyzing some text), 3 essays, a presentation and a final essay in class. Nothing was too challenging as he provides a clear rubric. HIGHLY rec
Discussion or quick journal posts every week, very doable, but don't do it last min. 3 Essays and 1 Final Essay, very clear rubric, and plenty of time given. Very accessible during support hrs, Professor Varbel actually cares and takes the time to give real feedback. He is very caring and willing to go out of his way to give support and extensions.
