Awesome professor. Gives open-ended assignments that allow you to be creative and create what is in your best interest.

Andrew is the best! An artist himself, he understands that a rigidly structured environment is not always conducive to creativity. He is super funny and entertaining, and while sometimes a little jumbled on the assignments, it doesn't matter because he says "as long as you make something good, it doesn't matter." I highly recommend this class!

He is a fantastic teacher as well as a fantastic artist. He can be a bit of a spaz sometimes but he really cares about his students and is always eager to help. He is really funny and makes class enjoyable. I came out of this class with a greater appreciation for design, not to mention abs of steel from laughing so hard!

As an ENTP, Andrew is the best kind of teacher for me. He worked with my ideas and gave good feedback based on whether the intent was accomplished and not based on his opinions necessarily. Lots of teachers try to turn you into students of their philosophies but Andrew wants you to make your own decisions.

Andrew is a fabulous artist. He is slightly a push over and easy to get along with. You can really tell he cares about art. Overall I really enjoyed his class. My drawing skills improved a lot due to the fact that we were constantly drawing. The only thing I did not like was that I ended up not having a lot of useable pieces for my portfolio.

Andrew helped me gain lots of new insights on art. He's also always open to your own ideas, and he encourages breaking the rules a little--so go for it, draw whatever you want! He makes this class very enjoyable, but make sure to have self-discapline or you won't get anything done in this class. I recommend this professor!

He can be a little undecided when it comes to assignments, which can definitely be an advantage if you want to convince him to drop one. He is interested in your progress as not only a student, but as a human.

I enjoyed his class. He has a wide range of taste and tries to understand students a lot. If you work on diligently, you'll get credit. But he did not give us much advise on our projects, unless we eagerly ask for one, he leaves us to do. You'll like his class, if you prefer freedom.

Andrew is a great guy! He sometimes gets carried away and gets off topic, but he's a great artist who knows what he's doing. Assignments are easy since he's so flexible to work with. He appreciates everyone's individual style rather than only drilling one art style into you. He sees his students' creativity rather than just judging by their skill.

Andrew is one of my favorite teachers! He really helped me develop my artistiv style and come up with good work. Somwtimes you need to tay after and talk to him when he's not distracted to get answers or advice on your pieces because he is a little scatter brained.

This is by far my favorite class. Andrew gives great assignments that give you direction but freedom to create art you are interested in. This class is way fun, and will keep you laughing for sure. It's a great entry level art class that will prepare you well for upper level classes.

Andrew is awesome. as long as you attend class and do all the assignments, you'll get an A and instead of making everyone do the same exact projects and ending up with students whose artwork all looks identical, he pushes everyone to develop their own unique style. he also tells hilarious stories about his misfortunes with dating.

Andrew was great at facilitating the creativity of each student. He purposefully left some assignments open-ended so students could expand on their own ideas. It was a great class for self-motivated people. Andrew knows each of his students and genuinely wants them to succeed.

Andrew is an excellent teacher! 2-D design has been one of my favorite classes. This class does require you to be self motivated, but if you are, you will have the room to be creative and find your own style. Andrew is hilarious and I would suggest this class to everyone who loves art.

He is a great teacher and friend. He is new at teaching, so he gives out open-ended assignments which can help some of the students to develop unique styles. He also teaches us stuff indirectly, and tells us hilarious personal stories. If you have to take this class, take it from him. I'm missing his class already!

Andrew was the single reason that I survived winter semester. He's an amazing person as well as a talented, considerate teacher. He truly cares for his students and is willing to help you get to where you want to be with art education. Every class was enjoyable, and highly anticipated. Andrew was one of the nicest, most personable professors I have had. He genuinely cared about the students. This was an easy class. We did a lot of assignments but the 3 hours of class were always used for working on assignments. If you want a fun and relaxing class while learning and doing art as well take it from Andrew. Professor Ballstaedt is a very good teacher. He is entertaining and hilarious, and also very kind and teaches clearly and efficiently.

While Andrew often gets off topic and loses focus, the environment he creates in the studio is very conducive for the production of art. Where in any other subject it would not work, the laid back atmosphere in that class is both enjoyable and allows for productivity.

This is a laid-back class that always kept me entertained.Students are given assignments, but can mold them to fit their individual artistic taste.The assignments challenge students, and the environment is very uplifting. He is very open to your ideas and decisions for artwork and gives you ideas along the way that are options; meaning he doesn't force his opinion on your projects but will help you. Entertaining and easy to talk to and get along with.

Andrew was absolutely great. Having no art background but hoping to get into the Graphic Design program he was very encouraging. His classes were always fun. He'd give specific art assignments but they were always very open to your own style and interpretation. I highly recommend him when you need to take VA 115 for your minor or pre-req.

Andrew is one of my favorite professors at BYU! TAKE HIS CLASS. I was new to design and he helped me the entire semester. He grades fairly if you do the assignments. Lots of opportunities to get an A. Our class was like a family and everyone wanted to come. It requires a lot of time to make good pieces, but it's fun and he is open-minded. Loved it!

I love Andrew! He's a great professor that made me excited to pursue art as a major. He can be a little spacey, but he's aware of that and will explain assignments multiple times, create checklists, and send out emails to make sure that all students understand what they need to do. If you want to have be creative, practice, and have a lot of fun, this is your class! Bro. Ballstaedt is never boring and is always willing to help you with anything. If assignments are too hard, or you need to skip one class he is understanding and will do what he can to work with your schedule. Be ready to work for 3h out of class, but its easy!

Professor Ballsaidt is the best teacher I've ever had. He was the one that made it possible for me to get into the BYU Graphic Design program. He makes everyone feel like they are an amazing artist and he is so encouraging. He is so nice! Whenever I feel discouraged about art and feel down about my art classes, I miss him and his classes.

I took Painting for non majors and it was wonderful. Not a lot of pressure, he was very easy-going and helpful.

The teacher is super chill and understanding. I would definitely take this class again. Class was also 3 credits which was also nice.

Andrew is a great teacher. He is super chill and is willing to help you with your grade. There is a drawing due each week and they dont take a ton of time to do. Super basic drawing class for anyone looking to take a good class with no tests. Art 101

He did a great job of helping you improve no matter where you are on the spectrum of talent. I never felt I was a talented at drawing but he helps you realize that it doesn't matter and everyone can learn and improve. Great professor!

I really enjoyed being in this class. He will help you if you struggle on any assignment. He also gives you the option to re-do an assignment if you do poorly which can be super helpful. One thing that wasn't helpful was the syllabus. Don't depend on the assignments he has listed in it. He changed it up almost every week.

Andrew is an amazing teacher!!

This class allowed me to try out painting techniques that I have always wanted to try but was nervous and unsure about how to start. Andrew gives great feedback and lets you paint what you want while also teaching you the basics. After you learn the basics he helps you develop and push your own style. It was a great class!

After taking this class, I have learned how to mix colors in a unique and creative way that makes vibrant and beautiful colors. I learned how to put my soul into my paintings and the memory of what I am painting. After taking this class I know that I will continue painting at least every week. I loved this class!! Totally worth every second!!

In my opinion, all students no matter what the major they are studying, should take an art class at some point of their school. I really loved this class. I learned new things and discovered skills and talents that were hidden on me. During this semester my creativity boosted 100% since I had never painted anything before.

Andrew will become your favorite teacher and artist really quickly. He is funny, kind, and passionate about painting. No matter where you land on the art spectrum, Andrew will help you hone in on your skills. His class setting is really relaxing and therapeutic. He's wonderful.

Andrew is a fabulous instructor, hands down. He is also distractingly hot. He's super sweet and passionate about art, he brings his dog to class which is adorable, and he has a great body... It was difficult paying attention sometimes solely because I would get lost thinking about the things I would do to him. He also makes food for his students.

This was a great class. If you ever have the chance to take a class from Andrew do it. He cares so much about his students and goes above and beyond to help. He inspires his students to be artistic in whatever style they wish rather than pushing a particular style. He's awesome!

This class was awesome. I was a more advanced painter starting out, so Andrew mainly just left me alone and let me paint and basically do whatever I wanted, making the class super relaxing and fun. However, if any student needed help or had questions, he stopped everything and helped. This class is super easy and very fun.

Best class ever. First of all Andrew brings his dog to call and he is hilarious and just a really fun teacher to have . His teaching style is really good! Andrew is one of my all time favorite teachers. Art can be really tough to grade, especially if your style isn't the same as your teacher. But Andrew doesn't grade that way! As long as you keep improving he is happy. Just do the assignments and let your "inner bird" fly!
