Had the emotional stabilty of a twelve year old girl. Avoid his classes if at all possible.
jerk face. went in for help, told me i'd get a good mark, if i did certain things, handed it in, got a really low mark....lies to you! very unstable. strange.
Extremely unfair. Phoned home because I missed two classes. Unwilling to provide assistance, can be very cruel to students. Very particular about class conduct, do not cross you arms and hold a pencil!

Andrew Bartlett is the worst professor I have ever had.

You have to wonder what happened to this guy to ever make him want to teach. Mean, mean, mean. Belittles students and marks like he has a personal vendetta against you.
Picks favorites, marks well only on papers that reflect his point of view. To do well just listen in class to what he thinks of poems, stories, plays, and elaborate this in essays and assignments. What ever you do don't disagree with him.
This teacher is crazy, he only thinks that his point of view. Dont argue with him if you dont wanna fail cause once you disagree with him you will fail the class for sure 100%
If you take classes with this guy, be prepared to have your opinions repressed. You are not allowed to think out side *his* box.

As a student who has completed ovver 25 classes with A/B grades, i can safely say Bartlett is the worst instructor i have ever had. Don't take him unless you like to get D's & F's. Watch your etiqette, he's a wanna be prof on a power trip.

A bit hard at first, if you come in and ask for help he is MORE than glad to give it to you, he even gave out chocolate bars to those who did a few times. If you are an idiot you are going to get a bad mark. He does not teach his courses to molly coddle.

take detailed notes on every poem, every story..an i mean detailed. To do well on essays, copy exactley how he does his example essays. worse than a high school teacher, will phone you at home if you miss class.

This guy is very nice, but a bit neurotic! His class is interesting bc he chooses interesting books to read. He is VERY picky and if you are writing an essay, you shoud just use his facts for it. It is possible to pass this class with a good mark if you go to him for help. He is VERY helpful!

Probably the worst prof at Kwantlen. This was my second time having him and it will be the last. Went to his office after I went from an A to C- in 1 week and he was not helpful and couldn't wait until i left. I made the mistake ofdamaging his ego so I ended up with a bad mark. a very demanding professor. He has his own ways of looking at essays and if you don't look at them the same- even if you can back up your argument- you're wrong. I found his class really challenging.

The people that hate Mr. Bartlett are just lazy. I took him for 2 semesters and I thought he was an awesome teacher. He is very clear and very helpful. It's true that he is a hard marker but he is a good teacher if you do your work. He will totally help you if you ask and is willing to give extra marks for fixing up your mistakes. He give A LOT of writing work (like TONS) but honestly you can learn so much from him about writing. His class really helped my essays, and that's what's important.
Please avoid this teacher. He is a little weird at first but is not so bad later on. Bartlett gets a lot of negative reviews and he is a tough marker. However, he is extremely helpful and does care about your learning as long as you show that you care. The only way this prof is willing to help you is if you're willing to have no opinion of your own whatsoever. You have to conform to his opinion entirely and he is continually contradicting himself, making it impossible to know what he wants. Don't let him turn you off English! I took a 2nd year English course and got an A. Believe me, it's him!

I took his class because I needed it. I had to push my way through that class because every view that I had and wrote about, even if I had evidence, was not the right one. He would only give you good marks if you saw things his way. The structure of his lectures were very confusing and never helped in the long run. AVOID ANDREW BARTLETT!!!

I had him YEARS ago and I can now confirm that he should be on lithium. He is, perhaps, the worst English prof in Canada. Not because he dosen't love lit, but because he is so manic that you can't focus on the literature. He'll go from smiling to screaming, literally in seconds. MANY MANY better profs at Kwantlen. I got an A on the g12 prov exam and am a competant student.Andrew Bartlett's 1100 class was a major let-down, he treats students like highschool kids, expecting 8 hours of homework a week for a total of 3% of the final grade.He expects handwritten drafts for essays.expect to participate in class.I averaged a B+ on the essays. I'm so glad I'm not the only person that think he is a total FREAK! I had him last semester. He canceled class because students were late for 10 minutes. I was there on time but seriously essay was due that day, give them some time! BEWARE He can use ph/log on any of your opinions which means you're not making any sense!
This guy is smart but expects way to much from first year students. I'm in 4th year and still have nightmares from him. Don't take him. He marks you very low and doesn't help you. He's brilliant but expects you to be at the level he is (a PHD in English.)
I found his class to be tough, but I learned lots and he makes it interesting. The readings and the work are interesting and he offers lots of help that is beneficial. I would recommended his class to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills.
He's a very tough instructor. However, if you really work hard and do what you're ask to do, you'll do fine. Lazy students should not take him, but if you are willing to strive hard to really earn good marks, take him. He's tough, but fair and helpful. Although a tough marker, a teacher of intelligent wit; capable of "showing the other side" of an argument (almost convinces to make you agree). teacher might not be able to suit 200+ students, but students of course can, so he's not a bad teacher...YOU ARE NOT A GOOD STUDENT
Andrew is the best English prof I've ever had. He's a really understanding guy when it comes to extensions. He gives great feedback in marking and also takes time to identify problems students have as individuals and then helps EACH STUDENT improve on them. His material is interesting and I would definitely take a class with him again.
Although he's a tough marker, his material is very interesting. He's a passionate professor who really cares about his students. He is one of the few profs who is willing to put in extra time to help students at an individual level. If you're willing to work hard you won't regret taking his class. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed learning it.
Helped me get one of my best grades in English. Instead of class he had one on one meeting for an essay. With out it I would have failed the essay. Great Teacher and funny too.
Andrew Bartlett is a great professor. Through all his classes he is very helpful to each student and cares greatly about your progress. In both of my classes with him, I learned more than any other english class and had loads of fun. I would highly recommend taking his courses.
Mr. Bartlett tries hard for the success of his students by providing them course related handouts, by reminding them of the deadlines beforehand and by being available for help inside and outside the class.Thus, leaving the onus on a student. I think some students are blind to the "baby sitting" he does for them during the semester.
the class isn't very hard, but andrew is very willing to help anyway. he scheduled 1 on 1's with everyone for our final essay, which was super helpful definitely boosted my grade. you have to work for your grade, but honestly people this is college, what do you expect? andrew is funny, approachable and v. smart, i'd take his classes again.
i loved this class, bartlett encorporated music and movies into the curriculum and made it interesting without being too stressful. he is wildy passionate about english which made me that much more involved in the class
Andrew is an amazing prof and goes the extra mile to help. Don't expect to go into his class, or any English class for that matter, and do well without putting forth a solid effort. Class discussions are interesting and Andrew is open to new interpretations of the selected readings. I would definitely recommend him to prospective students.
Professor Bartlett's teaching was firm, in that he's expectations are high, but his methods and conduct are very fair. Through focused work, I was able to succeed in his class, and take that knowledge and improve my grades in all areas of my studies. For that I am thankful to Professor Bartlett, and recommend him as a professor.
I originally went into Mr Bartlett's class with a distaste for English at Kwantlen as my previous teacher was completely incompetent and BORING. Mr Bartlett completely changed my mind.I was always engaged in his lectures/projects as he puts a lot of effort into making them interesting. I came out with an A with his help, which is always available.

I got a D for my first in class essay,and he helped me bring my mark up to a B by the end of the semester. His class really isnt that hard if you attend regularly and pay close attention when he outlines what he wants for his essays. some people seem to totally misunderstand that part.
He has one good quality: awesome lecturer. However, his anal behavior overpowers the class. He timed our 10 min breaks & would then proceed to lecture before the timer even went off. He almost made a kid refold his name card because it was "incorrectly" folded. He opposes originality and has a huge superiority complex. He will mock you to your face

He's passionate about what he teaches which can be infectious. He uses a variety of tools to fuel discussions, not just lectures (a video or two included). If you attend classes, do your readings and homework and contribute you should have a fine time (and mark) in the class. If you need help, he encourages coming to talk to him.

Dr. Bartlett is an excellent instructor. His lessons are clear and easily absorbed. He is interested in his work and offers his help to those who need and request it. For those students who do poorly: you have only yourself to blame. If you work hard in his course you will get the grade your work merits. English isn't for everyone.
I had Professor Bartlett 2 years ago and I felt his methods of teaching were filled with passion and insight. Although it can be hard to grasp exactly what he wants from you as a student, I would definitley take a class with him again. Andrews a pretty hard marker...you really need to pay attention to what he wants in his essays/paragraphs...if you work hard and do exactly what he wants in this assignemnts - you'll do fine....but most people get confused on what to do and do bad on their assignemnts.....watch out for that..
Although he seems like a good teacher at firts he's not. He's a lenient marker in the beginning, but not very clear with the criteria. (Leaves no room for improvement and gives way to many tedious assignments that don't help at all.)

The worst prof I have had in my 4 years of post-secondary. Seems okay at first but then proceeds to yell at the class over paper results. Timed our breaks and then started lecturing before class started. Picks favourites and singles out those he hates. While his material may have been interesting, it's lost amidst his constant mood swings.
Horrible teacher. Mandates attendance, which alone makes him unfit for teaching university level courses. Uses insulting language when criticizing assignments. Treats students like they're still in high school. It's people like him that make this school a joke in the eyes of UBC and SFU students.
I'm a bit surprised at the negative comments. I'd say he's one of the more legitimate University-level teachers at Kwantlen. He knows what he's talking about, he's passionate about the subject, and he's detailed-oriented. My only complaint is the mandatory attendance. But he gave me an A+ on a paper I thought sucked, so there you go.
I was a little scared after reading some of these comments, but honestly, he's not that bad. Do what he asks, and you'll do fine. Yes, he's detail-orientated and a tough marker, but if you're willing to put in the effort to understand the material and pay attention, you'll succeed. Never take his class. He is inconsiderate, does not help when you go to his office. Discouraging and critical. I dread going to his class. He is way too intense and will waste your time.
The guy is SUPER NICE, but it's English, HOW MUCH MORE TECHNICAL CAN IT GET!? So many handouts - I'm usually confused by the end of class. I don't know...this class is about love - and that's the EXACT opposite feeling I have for it.

Andrew is so nice. At course-end he gave me a poetry book just because I mentioned at the start that I love poetry! Yes it's tough, all Univ English is. You have to work hard and be very smart. Tons of useless, time consuming assignments that count for participation. He is a fair - hard marker at best. The only thing that was good about this class was semi interesting essay topics
The most useless prof ever! DO NOT take this class with him. The material should have been fun and interesting, but this prof is so narrow-minded and gives so many tedious assignments that he made the whole experience completely worthless.
Course was fun and interesting. A nice chance to read REAL books, not just "literature" for a change. Andrew is very kind and helpful with many comments on all assignments. Really cares about students' success and spends time helping them improve their writing. Difficult if you don't want to put in a good bit of effort, but what teacher isn't?
He gives off handouts like leaves falling out of trees during fall. He is very anal, incompetent, and does not know how to teach. If you are concerned for your GPA, and if you are thirsty to learn, then this is not the professor for you.
This teacher seems nice at first, but don't be fooled. When he gets mad he is completely rude! He is a HARD marker! If you normally get A's or B's in english dont expect it in his class. He is a nice guy and he really does try but he assigns an unreasonable amount of homework. He marks hard but does give helpful comments. Sometimes I completely loath him and other times he is alright. My only real problem with him is the overwhelming amount of homework we are given that does not really effect our course grade.

Passionate about English. Dislikes any use of technology in his classroom ie: laptops, cell phones, ipods. Says his one goal in life is to have two of his students fall in love and marry. He is humorous, but a tough marker, and gives a lot of homework. If you have a lot of classes in a semester, it will be tough to keep up with his.
Very difficult teacher. Gives lots of homework and is a hard marker. He gives good feedback on your paper and material is interesting but it is very difficult to figure out what he's looking for. One can revise his or her paper to his specifications and he may still give you a lower grade. Don't think I would take him again.

Andrew's class is not easy. But, if you do what he asks you to do, you will surely pass with flying colours. He is very helpful, I suggest you ask him questions so that he knows that you are putting effort in the course and that you really want to do great. Gives a very unreasonable amount of homework for a first year course. I have taken courses up to 300 level, and this has been my most time consuming course to date. Most of the homework is just for participation (10%), but he makes it mandatory. Seems nice but also has a sassy side. Very particular in what he looks for. Nice guy, but too hard!

A ridiculous amount of homework for a first year english class. The amount of handouts is insane. He's a nice guy but the way he presents the class needs to be scaled down. Too much paper, and too many little assignments.

WORST TEACHER EVER. i missed 2 classes for nationals and came back asking if there was any handouts i needed to write my essay and he said no. he ended up failing me on the 15% portion for an overall 40% assignment because i didn't write the notes the way he wanted them that was explained in a handout he didn't give me. very rude person.
My least favorite teacher at kwantlen so far. Not approachable what so ever, very harsh and a extremely hard marker. I would not reccomend him to anyone.
He isnt that bad! when i first went to class i was terrfied because of these reviews. He is actually really sweet .. well to me atleast. There is a huge amount of work that is only worth checkpoints. There are a few essays but if you try you can get really well in class. Just requires a bit more work but other than that he is fine.
I would not recommend him to anyone. He's such a hard marker and criticizes your work. Not a very good proff, heavy work load and teaches you the proper way of writing after he hands back your major assignment.
I have never submitted an evaluation on this website before, but felt it was necessary to warn future students about Andrew. I am an A student and your GPA will drop, I put in well over 15 hours a week of homework and you do not receive an appropriate mark for the effort you put in. I would highly recommend choosing another class or taking one less
He treated us as we don't even speak English, which is odd since we all need to know to be accepted into the school. For the essay he says write whatever, if you don't write what he wants he'll make you write something else. But wont tell you what. Stickler for attendance, do not miss class. Actually, don't take the class if you know what's best.
Absolutely horrible. I've never felt the need to rate any of my professors but he was just ridiculous. I got a 92 as my final grade back in English 12. He wrote as a feedback that I don't meet the University requirement of at least 50% and don't understand English. He's not helpful at all and it's his way or no way. Good luck to anyone who has him.
Excellent prof! You will appreciate him later like an aged wine... His corrections should not be taken personally or in the negative as he is only trying to help you. Contrary to your belief, he is there to help you - if you will be humble and wise and accept the gift of learning. I know I did and I am grateful for it.
He is not that bad, yes he gives a lot of homework, and yes he is a semi hard marker. But he is also really passionate about the work and willing to help you if you ask. You just have to be willing to approach him. Also make sure to be one of the people that talks in class, he likes that and you get extra marks.
Worst. Prof. Ever. He's unclear on assignments and what he wants from you. If he tells you to do something and you do it, he'll get upset at you for doing it that way. You can follow his requirements to the letter and he'll say it's wrong. If you ask him questions about something, he gets upset at you for asking. In class assignments are pointless.

Andrew needs to understand that not all of his students are studying to become english majors. He gives an unnecessary amount of homework and is unclear in expressing what he wants from the students. His temper makes it difficult to approach him. I had a 4.0 GPA before taking this class. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy.
Mr. Bartlett tends to be very vague in his explanations, along with how the material he expects from a student is very different than the standard. Half the semester is spent on summaries while essays, which should be the focus of the course, basically aren't taught before the midterm which contains one as a major part of your grade.
Although he's passionate about his work, I find it somewhat difficult to grasp his teaching techniques. Most of the class focused on writing analysis essays on short stories and poems, which is not difficult to do. But his expectations were a bit too much for me I won't say I'll take him again.

He's very serious regarding his expectations. In other words, he is a tough grader, however he's willing to help if you ask. Expect to write essays analyzing short stories and poems including ones on exams. He is friendly, but doesn't play around when it comes to giving in your BEST work.
I never know a teaching could be so great until met his class. You can feel he really prepared a lot for every class, very detailed description for grading. He is the best teacher I have ever met in KPU. but, a little bit tough.

I took Andrew's class even after hearing bad things from a lot of people. I was pleasantly surprised he wasn't that bad at all. He does give a lot of homework, so be prepared for that, but if you do your work well and come to every class then you'll do fine.
Very hard marker. No matter how much effort I put in, and meet the expectations he asks for, there's always some excuse he throws in to why I'm wrong. He's very judgemental of students, throws disrespectful towards first year students. By far the worst prof and does not care about what you have to say.

Smart man, but it's clear he doesn't enjoy teaching. Lots of office hours available for help if you don't mind his condescending attitude. You get the feeling in his class that he'd rather see students fail than succeed and do well. When half the class frequently drops out it should be a clear sign that something is wrong.
An absolutely horrible professor. Condescending and rude and instead of giving constructive criticism on the essays he makes sure to include a rude and critical analysis of it. As someone who loves english (not just taking it for an easy A), it was ridiculous the amount of work I had to put into the class. Regardless of my mark, he is very rude.

Would be a great philosophy prof, but not so much an english prof. I would have preferred he kept more to technical writing than philosophical analysis of essays. However, as a person, he was a very nice guy. Picky on how he wanted things done exactly his way which may have not worked for some unfortunately. Lots of homework too.
He was very clear on what he expected for assignments, and class discussions were REALLY helpful in terms of analyzing texts. He gave me in-depth feedback on my papers, and for once ACTUALLY MADE ME FEEL CONFIDENT in my writing capabilities. Best of all, really interesting choice of texts. Would recommend for English Majors.
Not a bad teacher, but he will make you work for it. He gives out too many papers(hard to keep track of if you're not careful). I was actually doing well in his class until the very end. I felt that even though I followed through his specifications and did well on his assignments and quizzes, I still felt that I didn't get the grade I deserved.
He was very understanding and willing to help students when asked. I missed an assignment or two but that didn't affect me very much because he gave us bonus assignments that I was able to complete and use to better my grade. Overall, the worst prof ever. As a first year student, I tried my best to keep up with his long assignments, however, it wasn't just me who was struggling. There were 30 students in the beginning, and after the W deadline, only 15 students were left and most of us were failing. Bartlett is rude and calls you out on many things. His class was brutal

I took his class in the September semester, and he was my least favourite. He gave good feedback on your assignments but graded you impossibly heavy and forced you to conform to a really intense format. Sometimes in lectures he will go off on rants that can last a long time if you set him off just right that won't help you at all. Be warned!
He's a terrible lecturer. He's too expectant of his students to have a lot of background knowledge prior to the course and won't explain anything in depth. He'll tell you what you're doing wrong but won't offer up ways to fix it.
Do not take this professor. Heavy lectures and gives you a lot of homework worth a big chunk of your mark. It's my first semester ever in university and I feel like i'm already about to fail because of him. I try my hardest on assignments but it doesn't matter much because he marks so hard i'll still get a bad grade.

Does not grade his students according to the course difficulty but rather *his* difficulty. Off the bat, he has unrealistic expectations beyond our course difficulty and grades our work without leaving CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. If you don't attend class, you will lose participation points. If you do, you're doomed for a terrible lecture. Can't win.

Bartlett claims that he's willing to offer assistance to any students who may be having trouble, but he will get annoyed and upset at you for asking him questions. He will make your semester at KPU a nightmare. If you're reading this, avoid this weirdo at all costs
I see a lot of negative reviews about Bartlett. He is a workhorse, that is you will need to work for it. There is lots of reading and a lot of documentation, and he does have a short fuse. That being said his choice is subject matter is interesting, his grading is fair, his feedback is clear but doesn't pull any punches. I think he is underrated.
His grading is very strict because it follows a format that you're confined to. Showing up to office hours suck because even he has a difficult time deciphering poetry. His lectures are long, winding, and sometimes off topic. I wouldn't take his class if you're a first year student.
If I could give a 0 star rating, I would. Andrew Bartlett is by far the WORST prof I have ever had throughout my experience at KPU thus far. He not only is the hardest marker out there, he feels joy in failing his students. His sense of humour is horrible, in fact its quiet concerning because of how creepy his jokes are. I found professor Bartlett to be an excellent teacher, very patient despite my numerous failures to follow the instructions. He is a a fair marker, gives helpful and thorough feedback, and the subject matter is engrossing. I actually enjoyed writing the essays. I still suck at punctuation, however Its not his job to teach that.
Andrew is awesome. Took multiple classes with him. You get back what you put in. Learned more about writing from him than any prof I've ever had.
I have taken two two courses with Dr. Bartlett. He was very energetic and was always there for help. I enjoyed learning with him.
Avoid him at any cost. Even he is your last option avoid him unless u want to make your semester a nightmare. He expects from students as they are professional writers.
I would not recommend this prof. He gives out a ton of assignment and they are very tedious and VERY specific. You'll lose marks if the format of your essay is incorrect (e.g if your margins are .5 inches off). He does give a lot of feedback but he's pretty hard to satisfy. If English is not your best subject, I recommend looking for someone else.
Andrew carries this timer that beeps every few minutes as a reminder for him to shift topics VERY ANNOYING + TRIGGERING. The beeping is similar to a smoke alarm. He also does not allow students to take notes on their laptop. Andrew is a very controlling person.
Would not take again. Horrible teacher. This course is supposed to be about University writing, but he made it about animal cruelty. Made us watch a movie on fur farms (I left half way through). I signed up for English, not to be lectured on the inhumanity of meat-eaters.

He does not know how to teach and he is an extremely strict grader. If you do something wrong, its an automatic 10% off. This class is just way too much!! AVOID HIM!
In this class, you have to do an interview about a poem which is easy but very nerve-racking because it's a 1 on 1 with the prof. You have two analytical essays. One assignment is kind of easy but very specific (word count for sentences). Another assignment that is easy talks about an experience you had with an animal. Also, options project, easy.

Loved this prof because of his clear instruction on every assignment. He is VERY specific so if you like 3 pages of instructions per assignment he is for you. He leaves no room for guessing and give clear feedback as well.
Andrew Bartlett is very caring for his students, if you put it effort you will be fine, he gives a lot of detail in his instructions which is helpful because you know exactly what is expected of you, if you need an extension and have a fair reason he is very generous and will give you time.
Worst prof by far, does not care about students at all. Marks low on the most petty things. Do not take this class. Messed up marking my assignment, then when I emailed he never replied. Completed all the work in this class and every assignment following all the instructions and still managed to get a F.
Class seems to be more geared towards learning and memorizing his PERSONAL methods of research/learning. I find myself trying to fit his standards more than I find myself actually learning anything. Pretty surprised hes actually allowed to teach like this for students who pay good money to learn. Waste of my time.
Professor Andrew just expects a little bit more from students, which means effort to be put into the class. Its not an easy A course but you can definitely learn so much about English, trust me, this will benefit you in the long run. Especially to non-native speakers such as myself, i am very appreciated having him as my professor.
This prof is the messiest one I have had, despite other comments saying he gives clear instructions. He does but its always spread out among 3 different documents and its disorganized. He expects students to spend 6-7 hours reading per week and has unrealistic expectations for his students to write like professional writers in a intro class.
He is very particular on what you say and don't say. I find myself trying to fit what he wants to teach us in his own way rather then actually learning about writing. His instructions are very disorganized over tons of different hand outs. It is really hard to keep up. And he is kinda rude.
Do not take him. I am the type of student who never fails a class and always gets decent marks but with this class I had to retake with another teacher. He takes off many many marks on your essays for silly things. So much reading. I do not recommend at all for first years.
He is so rude. His instructions are so different from how he marks your work. Takes marks off for using the word " that" and these". Overall takes marks off for no reason. Definitely dont be taking his class. he told me to drop the class the first week of the semester. doesn't encourage his students to do better at all.
He is an unnecessarily harsh grader. He gives too much work and very little time. He seems to forget that his students have other courses to do and not everyone majors in ENGL. His instructions are clear enough, but I'm not taking any of his classes again.
This class was my one of my first 3 classes at KPU and its was so hard. Having him as my first year teacher made it seem like every other teacher is like him. He marks super hard and his instructions are all over the place and has them on 3 different sheets. He takes off marks for the most pettiest things. I would recommend not taking his class!!
I went into this class expecting to learn the basics of university writing. Those lessons ended after the third week; after that point it all we did was read and write about various studies on emotions. Aside from the course content, his teaching style and method of giving instructions is strange and hard to follow. Lots of arbitrary deductions too
Dr. Barlett is an amazing professor. He sets his students up for success, is passion about what he is teaching, and has clear in expectations. 100% would take again.
