He is overall a good professor, but his sarcasm sometimes imtimidates you to speak up in class because you know your statement will be shot down. Paper topics, attendence policy, & grading policy - all fair. Makes you read a TC Boyle book that is not interesting, but I would reccommend him.

Great teacher! Take him if you want an A. Also if you have hime for MWF, he doesn't make you come to class on Fridays all you have to do for Friday is complete a VERY easy online assignment. One of the best teachers ever.

The teacher is awesome! He understands bc he is younger...he swears and is very sarcastic...all you do is write 4 papers and read short stories. Class gets out early a lot... I'm taking him for 1120 i liked him so much..u must attend class though.

If you dont try, you wont succeed in his class. Tough grader, but go to him for help and he makes sure you understand. Bring papers to him and you are sure to do well in the course.

Mr. Bates is a great teacher! He is really sarcastic and funny, but it keeps you interested in his class. If you participate and interact in his class then you will deffinatly bennefit from it. I really enjoyed this class and anyone taking his class is lucky.

Mr. Bates is a great! Even though he is a bit hard, he's very clear on what he expects and offers alot of help if you're unclear about anything. I recommend his class to anyone who truely wants to learn but have fun too because he keeps things interesting with his sarcasm and random remarks

I really dig this teacher because he makes improving my writing fun. Trust me I am not one for books or school. Definetly reccomend this guys and plan to take him next year.

Mr. Bates is awesome. This is my second semester taking him. He is my favorite teacher and I wished that he taught all of my subjects. I hated English before I had him, now I love it. There are 3 in class reading essays, but you can use your book, 3 papers, 1 annotated bib, and you ready short stories. There is no final. I highly reccomend him.

I never missed a day this semester because it was the only class I enjoyed. He is funny and sarcastic and I am sad I will not have him as a professor again :( I strongly recommed him!

Mr. Bates was one of my favorite teachers this semester! He told so many stories that had me laughing the entire day! Material is fairly easy and he is willing to help you with whatever you need. I earned a B in his class and I know if i would have talked to him before turning in every paper, an A would have been easily achieved. Take Andy Bates!

He's so hot. Wow. he's extremly funny and makes the class interesting. He exaggerates and is a smart ass and can make fun of you but it's all fun. I recommend him.

He is a really cool guy, he likes to cuss a lot and he has a lot of in class reading assignments. Although they aren't hard, you just have to read the stories. There is no final exam, but you do have a paper due the last day of class.It is a very fun class though, and he grades fair but kind of hard. But you have to go to class EVERYDAY, period.

Professor Bates was such a great teacher! His class was always entertaining, and he was as straight forward as humanly possible with how to get a good grade. If you can follow simple instructions and take his sarcasm with a grain of salt you can do well! No homework, and no final or midterm!

Not a great prof. Didn't teach me anything I didn't already know. In-class essays and story interpretation had nothing to do with the class and didn't help me become a better writer in the least. First day speech meant to scare. This should be more aptly titled as "MLA Fomatting 101." Needs to keep his SAE cockiness in check and just teach.

Yeah, he was a hard grader but a great teacher. He is also very helpful outside of class. I would advise you to take advantage of him looking over your paper. Whenever I went I would make A's on my papers.

His first speech just tries to scare you off, but I found it to be funny. If you're offended by sarcasm or cussing then "get the **** out" [that's what he'll say]. He's cool as hell, pretty chill & laidback except when he's pissed. He thinks of all work as average [C] before he grades it, which means you have to work to get above average. Take him.

Take him! He can be a tough grader but if you take him your paper ahead of time he grades them for you and tells you what u need to add or take away. He curses a lot but usually funny. A lot of people have mixed feelings about Bates, but I found him to be informative and class to be laid back. He does tend to make fun, but it's always in good nature. Attendance is a big deal, so go. Always willing to help if you ask. VERY clear on what he expects and how to do things. I took his 1100 and 1200. High recommendation.

He makes class VERY entertaining. If you are a good writer, take him!! If not, it will improve your writing. I highly suggest him!

Real cool guy. Breaks stuff down so that you can understand it, and makes it interesting. Very easy to pay attention in class. If you don't curse, then grow a thick skin thats all I can say. Highly recommended.

Best professor I have ever had! HILARIOUS GUY! Class is extremely interesting but it is mandatory. If you go every day, you will do great in this class. THe papers are graded pretty harshly sometimes but it helps you improve as a writer. No class on fridays!(Just an online discussion). I highly recommend him. He is awesome

I really loved this english class! I was in his 8 a.m and he made it so easy to stay awake! his sense of humor really keeps class interesting. Only 4 papers all year but you have to try on them! Very tough grader on papers do not wait till last minute, and go to his office hours.If you are not willing to put in work then do not take this class.

I'm not going to lie, this class was pretty difficult. His sense of humor kept me interested though and made me excited to come to class. Be sure to read those ridiculous short stories before coming to class, it really helps. If you work hard B's and A's are definitely attainable in his class.

Andy Bates is hands down the best teacher I have had at ECU. Don't get me wrong, he is a sarcastic d-bag, but that's why you love him. People say his class is impossible, it's not. If you have him check your papers beforehand and actually go to class you'll do well. I got an A. His class atmosphere is fun and open and i would highly recommend him.

One of my favorite professors so far! He does not put up with any BS and is a tough grader. But as long as you listen to him in class and take notes, you will receive a good grade. I had absolutely no interest in English before this class. He does not assign much homework either, just a weekly online discussion and maybe some reading.

He's a great teacher, very intelligent. You barely go to class which was aggravating if you had an 8'clock. Stay in class for 5 minutes and then he'll tell you to leave. Pay attention to details, that's what makes your grade. If you don't listen to him oh well. Go to class!

Professor Bates is tough. He's sarcastic and sharp witted, but an outstanding teacher. You will learn in this class but it is not easy. If you want to put in zero effort and skim by take another class. If you want to really learn and improve your writing then take Bate.

He grades papers very hard. In the end you will come out with a decent grade as long as you participate. Your only grades for this class is four papers, a discussion every friday (10), and in class reading essays out of the boyle book(3). The papers are hard he doesn't give a lot of clarity on them, but discussions & in class essays are easy.

Bates was seriously the man. His lectures are really funny and he tries to get everyone involved. He is a pretty tough grader but if you don't skip class it's easy to make up any points you lose on the papers. He's the awesome and I would definitely recommend him.

Super easy if you're willing to participate. There are only two exams and they're just terms you more than likely learned in middle school- they take about ten minutes to complete. There's a reading every night but it's usually two to three pages or a poem. His lectures are hilarious too. Easy A.

Personality wise he is sharp witted and will pick on everyone, especially people who can handle it. If is he nice to you he more than likely thinks you possess low intellect. His teaching is solid and participating really adds to the classroom experience. If you are a sensitive wuss looking to be handed an A then this is not where you belong.
