A bit monotonic, but generally ok.
easy midterm, but kill you on final, WATC
No Comments
One bad mutha. You rock!
good notes; explain things well; and easy marking
Something must have changed since his last ratings in 2003. The poor averages on both midterms say somehings about his teaching ability.
Too much pause between his words, which makes his speech so hard to understand+digest.Exams are slightly harder than expected. Our class average was about 50% for both midterms.Final kills! He likes to give out notes&important messages in the last minute. It's so hard to get enough prepration b4 class.
I have trouble understanding him in class, but the tutorials really clarify important concepts. The exams aren't too hard.
Nice prof but had a tendency of trying to fail his whole class. MT1 was ok, MT2 was hard, and final was impossible. He tends 2 repeat some exam Q's from before so make sure you have know da ans even after MTs coz THEY WILL APPEAR BACK ON THE FINAL... I guess every1 knows it's not a fun course~
I can't seem to understand him during lectures. He assumes you know so much information prior to taking this course. Exams are fair and tend to be slightly on the easy side, which is good. The textbook and tutorials really clarify the information he zooms through in lecture.
He is confusing during the lectures. Apparently, he thinks every student has a PH. D. in organic chemistry before this course
A good prof. You really have to listen for the things that he puts emphasis on, because they will be in the MT's or final. EXTREMELY helpful in office hours, is totally willing to help students get a good mark if you are willing to put in the work needed
I hate organic chemistry. His notes sucked. Worked through examples and practice midterms. All questions seem to show up again on final from problem sets, practice midterms and finals.
This man was the only reason I passed the class with a decent grade. For such a horrible subject, he explained things well, and made things more bearable.
I really liked his teaching. The notes were well done and clear(most of the time). He seemed to get an impish enjoyment out of students not understanding what was going on; it was rather amusing.
Worst prof I've ever had, teaching a difficult class. Lectures and notes were all over the place and extremely hard to follow. If you're not an ochem genius do NOT take 282 with him. I ended up learning everything myself from the textbook and online.
I went to every lecture, and I never understood anything he said until I would read the textbook. I only went to motivate myself to study, because every time I'd go, I would have no idea what he was saying. This would freak me out, so I would try and study quite a bit for this class. The TA I had was halpful though.
worst instructor i’ve ever had. I went to all of his lectures, but learned the material just from textbook! he thinks all students have PHD degree. If you want to fail this course take it with him..
terrible notes + terrible explanations
It's hard to learn the material just by attending lectures. His notes are not horrible, but definitely not amazing either. This course is heavily scaled anyways.
The course is hard and he seemed to make it a hell of a lot harder. His lectures made no sense at all. Midterm average 51%, final average 30 something % :S I'd take it with someone else. Worked my butt off for a terrible grade.
simply the worst instructor ive ever had. It hard to understand anything in the lecture and its extremely hard to follow his notes.
tough course with terrible instructor+disorganize notes… you can easily end up getting bad mark on final exam.
His notes were terrible and his explanations sucked. Probably make it even more confusing tbh. Exams were way harder compared to homework problems. Don't take 282 with this guy if possible.
Alright, so he was a decent prof, but he couldn't communicate all the material well. His midterm was 100% fair, but the final had like 3 questions from the problem sets and the rest was IMPOSSIBLE. I actually knew what I was doing and was doing practice exams from the prof in surrey and was getting about 70%. HEAVILY HEAVILY SCALED! final avg = 32%
Dont take this class with him, the other profs are FAR better at explaining the material.
he's the best prof that i had in the whole year. very patient and nice
OCHEM is HARD. The material in the midterm was straightforward. Things following however, got confusing QUICK. It's no wonder he calls it the "real chemistry." Rxn mechanisms takes tons of practice. The final was difficult, but that is bc the material itself is not easy. Overall, Dr. Bennet lectures well and makes an effort to provide exam hints.
OCHEM is a hard topic but Bennet taught it well. His exams are very fair and are the exact same format as his practice exams so make sure to complete those for plenty of practice. Pulls some questions from problem sets so make sure to familiarize yourself with all the answers. Make sure to understand the mechanisms and do a lot of practice examples
The class average is very low. If you are not a chemistry person, don't take the class with him. Hard to pass.
His lectures aren't very helpful. Make sure you read the textbook! Tests are unfairly hard. The content of the course requires a lot of comprehension of mechanisms and processes. He defines and states but does not explain them.
This professor is the hardest one in SFU. Just don't take the Chemistry courses with him wait for another term. The class average was about C-/D and his test was the hardest. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS W/ HIM IF YOU WANT TO PASS!
Whoever said 122 was easier than 121 was lying. Bennet isn't someone you should take chem with, esp. if you're not that great at chem or simply hate it. His notes are not helpful when it comes to exams. You're better off reading the textbook than attending his classes. Very monotone professor too. A lot of ppl do their own stuff in class I noticed.
Don't ever take any class with this professor. He will not explain the test material. He forces us to attend his class by making up the iCliker participation mark. I'd rather read the textbook than go to lecture.
Not a good prof at all. Lectures are not helpful at all when it comes to the midterm. The examples are all on the power point and he talks through it rather than showing it. If you take chem 122 with him, don't expect to be taught by anyone except yourself.
He will not reply your emails. He goes through examples in his PowerPoint, literally just reading through it very fast and that's not helping at all. His test is amazingly hard, he said there is one MC question that only 3 people got right. He just make us go to his lecture by making the iCliker question worth 10%. I'd rather take with another prof
Bennet is not the best lecturer, but he will take the time to explain something to you if you go to office hours, His exams were actually very straight forward and if you go to lecture and can do the loncapa then you will be fine, i had to teach myself quite a bit but the level he expects for the exam isnt much harder than chem 12.
Dr. Bennets enthusiasm of chemistry and his amazing lecturing skills cannot be replicated by just an average professor (Other professors just dont SWEAT knowledge).Lectures are great and actually very productive if youre behind on a T.V. show and need to catch up. Great class to be in as long as youre not enrolled or have to write the exam.
Avoid 122 with Bennet like the plague. Horrible lecturing skills - anything that we learned was from the textbook. The most meaningful lecture I got out of this class was the last review day where he FINALLY showed us how to actually do problems (which by the way are the only things you even do on exams in this course!!). Absolute waste of time.
Lectures are informative if you have a genuine interest in chemistry, but will not help you score in exams. Exam questions mainly consist of calculations, similar to LONCAPA. Overall difficulty is about the same as CHEM121.
He's the best prof in SFU, very willing to help and i got motivated by him
You can tell Bennet knows the topic but he has no idea how to communicate it to students. He is the most boring prof I have ever had to listen to, and the class doesn't even have a textbook to reference. His lecture notes are so disorganized and hard to understand, especially for someone who has no previous knowledge of organic chemistry.
His lectures may be boring and occasionally hard to follow but if you go to office hours he is more than willing to re explain a whole topic and will often go over practice questions with you similar to the one you had. His exams are fair and super similar to the practice exams he gives you. If you are good at teaching yourself take it with him!
This guy only read concepts off his powerpoints and did no practice questions to show how to do problems. I had to watch youtube videos to teach myself the material. Only easy part of the class was when he copy pasted some of the questions from the review questions worksheet and put them on the final exam. Don't take him.
One of the worst profs i have encountered. It is very hard to learn in this class, mostly just blindly clicking random answers for iclicker participation & randomly guessing on the exams. He puts questions from loncapa on the written response sections.
Seems like a nice guy, but pretty terrible at explaining concepts and engaging the class in the material. The exams seemed very foreign to the material covered in class, since it was calculation-heavy and barely any example calculations we demonstrated in lecture.
I didn't like him in 122. He's totally different in 281 though. Puts effort into lectures, gives useful and engaging I-clickers, actually explains the concepts and engages with us. Used to hate him, is now one of my favorite profs.
Lecture are boring but he has a very good understanding of the material and seems to really care for the students. I like his exam style and he is very available and willing to help. Frequent i clicker questions weighed both on correct answer and participation. Overall a pretty good experience. Took him again for another class.
I didn't like Dr. Bennet's teaching style for CHEM 122, but I've completely changed my tune after taking CHEM 281 with him. He's not the best at explaining concepts and his notes are mediocre, but he provides lots of good iClicker questions and exams are fair. In addition, his sense of humor made this challenging course bearable.
i thought he was going to be a really bad prof based on the ratings here but he actually is a decent lecturer i studied based on the slides and went to all the lectures for iclickers and ended up with good marks on the midterm. definitely need to put in the work for such an intense course. dr bennet is very helpful just go to his office hours
A good prof with even better hairline
He does not seem like he is ready to teach, explains course material very poorly and overall absolutely disorganized. He had the audacity to even put the stuff that he claimed those would not be on the quiz. ***Definitely avoid him at all cost.
Seems like a good guy but he is the most unorganized prof I've ever had. Lectures were horrible at first, but he took feedback and improved his system so it was easier to follow along. Pretty boring lectures overall (watched on 1.4x speed and it wasnt bad). Midterm was basically just the homework so not sure why the average was so low.
Dr Bennett does seem a little all over the place teaching CHEM 122 but Im going to give him benefit of the doubt because Ive heard that he doesnt like teaching inorganic chem as much as orgo. I found his midterm to be fair but his quizzes throw you off sometimes, so on the difficulty scale I would give him around a 3.5.
TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. UNORGANIZED, LACKS ALL PASSION FOR THIS COURSE. SLOW. WATCHED LECTURES ON 2X SPEED EVERY SINGLE TIME. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOURSELF. THIS IS WHAT TRUE PAIN IS. MIDTERM WAS FAIR BUT THAT FINAL.... AVOID Dr Bennet at all costs. He made what shouldve been an easy course EXCRUCIATINGLY HARD.
His midterm was more fair than his final but the final was worth so much more that it didn't matter. The quizzes that we had to do were aids, there was little to no way to prep for them. You have to learn the units by yourself mainly as his lectures were just pointless and bland with no enthusiasm at all. DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM.
If you are looking to take Chem 122 avoid Bennet at all costs. Lectures consisted of him reading off the slides. They were dry and difficult to get through, even on 2x speed. He doesn't hold office hours. You're better off just reading the textbook. The mt was fair but the final, worth 45%, was much harder.
The midterm was quite good. Most of the midterm questions were from the Loncapa homework. However, the final exam was a totally different story. There were lots of difficult questions and most of the students in the class were not able to finish them on time. The lectures were super bad. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Midterm was ok. Final was pretty hard but lots of lon capa questions. Lectures are boring but he went through lots of examples. The man was nice enough to out two questions he step by step in a review lecture on the final exam. Seems like a nice enough guy, but not a great lecturer.
I would not take his class again. Ever.
Solid prof. The quizzes he made were quite hard, but the exams were doable. Lectures weren't engaging but lecture slides were clear.
Great lecturer, fair quizzes, midterm and final. My marks really reflects that. Highly recommend if you want to get a mark as high as mine!!!
if you think you can teach yourself a semester's worth of chemistry without any help then maybe you can make it out of this class alive. his lectures were so useless that I stopped watching 1 week in. no office hours and certainly no answered emails. I would avoid this prof at all cost.
Doctor Andrew Bennett should not be employed a university. He has been the worst teacher I have ever experienced in my life. He doesnt teach, his lectures are useless and his final was impossible. Not enough time and it wasnt even fair questions. Dont put yourself through the pain of chem 122 with him. You will regret every second.
Professor Bennet was alright at best. Quizzes were hard and lectures were quite dry, but the exams were fair overall. His lecturing style could definitely be improved upon as they weren't the most engaging like mentioned before. However all semester he didn't have any office hours so it felt like he wasn't really there to help students.
No idea what Professor Bennet was doing all semester, having 0 office hours the full term. He definitely did not care at all for the students, and wanted to finish his lecture as quick as possible to get out of there.
not a good teacher
Prof. Bennet's quizzes and midterm was okay, but his final exam was hell!! The guy had way too many questions on the final and expected us to finish it. The other issue with him was that he doesn't know how to teach, not only is his voice super boring, but he has no interest. The only reason I survived was because of the textbook and Clayton
Dr. Bennet was a nice professor. Although organic chemistry is a difficult subject, he makes it seem even more difficult with his monotone voice and recorded lectures split into multiple parts, 7 at most. Friendly and understanding during office hours. Tutorials were helpful! Grade is made of only exams, so if you're a bad test taker.. feels bad.
Just badI have a midterm with him tomorrow and I learned absolutely NOTHING from him. Been teaching myself the whole course. Avoid him at all costs. He doesnt even teach the material properly, only the tas were helpful
He really does makes already difficult things more difficult. He should not be teaching.
He makes ochem more difficult than it actually is. I didnt learn anything from his lectures/slides and up until this point Ive been attempting to teach myself everything. Ive never withdrawn from a course before but am seriously considering it.
Hardest course I’ve ever had to take. Most of the content doesn’t get a proper introduction and is poorly taught.
Old fashioned lecture with infficient note taking using overhead camera. He explains like you are chem major. The way he explains makes material more difficult Going over minimal mechanisms, with minimal note taking Marks not spread out through assignments Thanks to youtube and google. They are the only reason i could understand anything.
Horrible prof, idk why he’s even allowed to teach chemistry. Marking is 10% iclicker, 35% first exam, 55% 2nd exam.
Horrible professor. Notes were messy and inefficient. Lectures confused me more. Did not care about chem. The class average for the midterm was around 50 and he refused to scale because someone got 100%. Did not learn a single thing from him. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEARN NOTHING AND GET A BAD GRADE.
Worst chemistry prof ever
Horrible teacher! Grade is based on solely exams and there is barely any homework to practice what you've learned. His lecture slides have no definitions, just examples as if you already know what he's talking about. No assigned textbook, although I recommend you get one so you can teach yourself the course (it was the only way I scraped a pass)
Dr. Bennet is horrendous. By far the worst prof I have ever had at SFU. As other reviews have said, he makes course content 100x harder than it actually should be. Tests did not feel like assessments of our understanding - they were astronomically difficult. I would seriously not recommend taking his class to anyone. He is awful.
ABJ is a truly mediocre prof. If you understand Chem, you'll be fine, if not, maybe avoid him. I didn't learn anything from his lectures and had to teach most of the material. Exams are very hard but all chem exams are. Curve is pretty strong, 50% average on exams = C+
Most people dislike Dr.Bennet's teaching style, but I personally found him alright. He's a nice guy, answers questions and replies to emails within a day which was quite helpful. He puts a lot of questions from practice exams and iClicker questions in the actual exams, so as long as you do the practice and understand it you should be fine :)
I took the first Ochem in another institution and took the second one here with Professor Bennet after I transferred to SFU. So there were many concepts that I hadn't learnt in Ochem 1 which were necessary for his class. So I asked him questions after each lecture. He really helped me a lot. I wish I could learn from him more. Good caring person!
DO NOT TAKE THIS DUDE JUST DONT DO IT
Every lecture he blurts KAWWNSTUNT and it makes me lose my sanity, his voice is so annoying! Andrew Bennet needs to learn how to speak.
He is super nice and very very fair. His exams are perfect!! You will definitely score good if you focus on everything that's done in the class. His class was the best!! Hands down the best prof!
He is amazing and very helpful! Idk why people are rating him low...with fair amounts of effort you can enjoy this class a lot!
Best prof!
He's very fair and teaches amazing!
Prof Bennet's most redeeming quality are his fair tests and final. He gives good practices material leading up to exams and even held review sessions. However, his lectures are very dry and can be hard to follow. The slides are just watered down textbook bullet points.
To be fair, Andrew is not a bad prof at all, his lectures are just dry. If I could go back and do one thing, I would have reviewed his practice midterm and final exams - as the actual exam questions are taken from these practices. Overall, course was not the most thrilling and it was easy to get lost but focus on the lectures and do the practice!!!
Get ready to read the textbook and learn on youtube because his lecture slides are not helpful. I pretty much managed to succeed in his class because of his practice exams and it was very nice of him to reuse a lot of those similar questions on the exam. I'm giving him a high rating because although he wasn't great at teaching, his exams were fair.
Professor Bennet's lectures' slide might be a bit messy, but overall it highlights the main point of every concepts. It should be used as a guide rather than the main studying tool, since textbook is the primary resource he used and contains most information.
Though it says there is participation, you can take advantage of the iClicker online version, where you don't need to be present to answer the questions. Participation depends on you answering questions rather than getting it correct.
Go to his review sessions, he will go through the practice exams questions and provides detailed answers. His exams are pretty much copy and paste from the practice and iClicker questions (which he posts on canvas). If you actually use the resources he provided, this course would be a grade booster.
Professors are here to guide us to the correct path not handing us answers. Learning and education are our own responsibilities. People who only blame others and doesn't reflect on how to improve themselves would never succeed. Always stays a failure!
Took this course in Fall 2022. HW-5%, iClicker-5%, MT-35%, Final-55%. Don't know how he is in previous years. But he is one of the best Prof in teaching CHEM 122 now. If you are taking CHEM 122 with Prof Bennet after Fall 2022, don't be scared of the 1's rating below. Do your job as a student, and you will attain great success in this course.
Average was B in Fall 2022. Easy course.
Good prof, its just sometimes that his slides can be a little difficult to read.
love dis dude
best prof, no cap
takes CHEM 122, sees Bennet's ratings *scared* goes to lessons, review sessions, takes exams *gets A+* COME ON MAN, DIS TOO EASYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY hands down, best CHEM 122 Prof ya gonna get
Andrew had fairly easy exams, but by no means was he an astounding teacher. All material on his slides was taken verbatim from the textbook, and yet it still made more sense when I would read it in the textbook. I absorbed nothing from his lectures and was forced to teach everything to myself via the textbook and youtube videos.
Go to office hours. Bennet, Merbouh, and other profs have bad rating because people were upset they got a bad grade when they were either online during covid and/or didn't go to office hours. HE IS SO HELPFUL AND WHOLESOME. Stop shading on a great prof. Take the course with him, pass, and be done.
wasn't the best, but also not the worst because the flow of lectures were not very organized. however, was very clear of what is on the exam. tip: make a sheet cheat and flashcards for all the reactions b4 hand, exams are cumulative!!
Chem 282 is not a class that you could just easily “self study” and teach everything to yourself. Having a good prof and a good TA really helps which Andrew Bennett and his rude TA's are far away from it. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM I'm surprised why some people here have rated him more than 2. this course made me hate chemistry.
The lectures could be disorganized, but the professor clearly outlined exam content. Make cheat sheets and flashcards for reactions - it really helped me prepare using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook.
He is a bland as oatmeal, he's also British (derogatory) who shamed the class on the midterm, and went through what percent failed each question, before even giving the grades back 1.5 weeks later (it was all multiple choice literally shouldn't take so long). He also has the most boring lectures ever and is very rude when you ask any questions.
By far, Dr. Bennet was my favourite professor so far. He was an amazing instructor who was very passionate about Chemistry and teaching it. He also had a great sense of humour. If you had a question, he would not ridicule you but explain the concepts more for you, and he was very patient. Homework was fine, and the exams were very fair. GOAT PROF!!
The exams were pretty straight forward, doing the textbook questions and practice exams were helpful to prepare. notes were also good. At times lectures were boring but i do recommend attending them. Even though Bennet wont be teaching anymore i had to leave this review for the goat. Thx prof. Bennet.
He is a pretty good prof. His exams were pretty straightforward, based on the practice exams and lectures. Despite the lectures a bit dry, it was helpful for the exams. I'm glad to be in his class. It's interesting that he had been teaching at SFU for over 30 years and this class is his last class. I wish him all the best in life !
His lectures are bland and he reads off of slides and doesn't explain the concepts very well. The only way to get a good grade is to read the textbook and do LOT'S of questions. His only redeeming quality is that his exams are fair, and not too challenging. And OF COURSE, be prepared to hear some EXCEEDINGLY repetitive language (you'll see).
Took his class during his last year as a professor before retirement. His lectures slides were hard to follow, listening to him during class was painfully difficult, and would make a ton of mistakes doing example problems. Worst professor I've ever had, but the course is easy so I guess it balances out.
Course was easy but by no means was he extraordinary. His slides for the first few units were really hard to follow since there was barely information on them (they were a summary of the textbook). I understood the textbook better than a single word that came out of his mouth. I hope he has a very QUIET retirement.
AJB had boring lectures and at times can be confusing despite the easy concepts. However he was nice to talk to, just not about lecture material. I would highly recommend reading the textbook and doing textbook problems. Tests were fair with no surprises.
His lectures were very boring and I found that his explanations were hard to understand. He did give practice questions that were on the actual midterm and final.
Andrew Bennet was alright. Lectures were kinda boring but they were informative and easy enough to follow, and the textbook was pretty useful as a reference for any material you didn't get, or more practice. The lon-capa questions were good practice too. Nothing spectacular but nothing awful either
lectures were dry but exams were so free. just read the textbook and self study. exams were copy and paste from practice exams and textbook questions
