I'm a senior and after having many professors, Professor Bisto has been the BEST professor a student could ask for. All you have to do is attend the class, listen to his lectures and you'll pass the class easily. My favorite professor.
Lectures the entire class hour without visual powerpoint and lacks student participation. You write a few papers, take online quizzes, and 3 exams. No little assignments to get your grade up!! he told us the online textbook was required ($100) but yet only used it for one online quiz and tells us the textbook is wrong during lectures.
He tends to go off on tangents that have little to do with the lecture. It takes longer than it should to get through certain topics in his class.
Mr. Bisto was a very interesting instructor and I rarely if ever felt bored in class. Information he presents is easy to take notes on and majority of it I found interesting enough to memorize from lectures. Exams and tests aren't bad and you can tell he genuinely cares. As a bonus, he can be quite funny and is a very understanding prof.
The times that I actually went to class, the lectures were usually a lot of information. I felt like I had to take down everything on the board and what he was saying. The information in some chapters that he presents is actually really interesting. He is a pretty chill professor, exams and quizzes aren't too bad.
Amazing and understanding teacher, but very lecture heavy. I made the mistake of skipping classes an learned the hard way that the test are very much so on what he says in class. Don't be afraid to write things down, because while he does sometimes have slides he uses them more as a reference than a word to word presentation.
As long as you attend lecture and take notes, you'll get attendance and be able to pass weekly quizzes with no problem.
He obviously loved what he was teaching, but was extremely monotone. There's no homework other than readings, which you 100% have to read. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he does do rare extra credit/ attendance pop quizzes. There are only two things that he enters into grade book, the midterm and the final. He also doesn't curve grades. Good luck!
Very great lecturer. Very little work outside of class. Exams are very straightforward.
Mr. Bisto's lectures were by far the most DRY lectures I have ever experienced. He does not provide slide shows or writes on the board. He just stands in front of the class and talks for 1 hr 15 min. He is is also very monotone and hard to hear. He grades you on quizzes and 3 exams only. Do not take his class.
Very tough grader. Takes forever to give papers back. Vague feedback. Very dry lectures. Will lecture for the entire class period, and might run long. Changes course requirements halfway through the course. This is a criminal justice course, he requires you to write in ASA American Sociological Association style writing. Do not recommend this prof
Dr. Bisto is a great instructor. When lecturing hes very dry and monotonous, but otherwise hes really nice and chill. The information he presented in class is word for word from the book and the test. I found the information really compelling, which is probably why I enjoyed the class so much. Take good notes, pay attention, and its an easy A.
Classes are very boring and he doesn't engage with the class as much to ensure they have a plesant learning experience. You have to atttend classes to pass the class because sometimes he provides very specific information. All in all, don't take the class.
To pass this class all you need to do is do good on your quizzes and take good notes in class to study for the exams.
No extra credit, no test reviews. Only sit through a lecture then take test. No more, no less.
Andrew is very smart and is a great teacher. The material was tough, but if you show up to class and do the work then you will pass this class.
Only grades you on tests throughout the semester, nothing else. Lectures are just him talking and they are extremely boring. He expects you to remember everything that he says and tests you off of that. Doesn't offer any help to prepare for tests and offers no extra credit.
Did not grade anything until last week of class so you will not know your grade until it's too late. Also he called students racist and is a liberal lunatic who makes his views very apparent in class. Lastly he makes it apparent that white privilege in his opinion is a big problem in America and he is in love with Nancy wonders, another liberal.
He can be a bit dry and monotone, but is passionate about what he teaches and that usually makes up for it. If you study hard, you'll be fine. Tests are almost entirely from lectures though, so make sure you take notes.
Great teacher! Some of the material can be a little dry at first but over time it gets better. No homework just weekly quizzes which are easy as long as you take good notes. All info on his tests and quizzes are from lecture so attend classes!! He does not do study guides for the test but has a review session which goes over everything on the test.
He does absolutely nothing to help students. It's a bummer. Nothing will be available to you online. He is quite monotone.
He doesn't offer students any help at all. Won't even post power points for midterm or final. No extra credit at all. Makes students feel dumb for asking certain questions. You must read to pass quizzes and tests, and that's all the class is based on. Took this class my last semester of and it was the only C I've ever gotten. Would not recommend.
Honestly a really good Professor his views are very apparent but he reads straight from the book for the most part. His Lectures are just him going over 3-4 topics/events and giving his take/opinion. If you take even halfway decent notes throughout the class its very easy to pass since almost all the tests are copy-pasted from the reading material.
Dr. Bisto is an outstanding lecturer and a passionate teacher. He cares about the material he teaches and you can tell that it matters to him that he gets his point across so the students learn. His tests are difficult and he definitely expects that we read all assigned articles and passages. Do the work and you will do well in his class!
His lectures were dry and he only graded based on test which we werent given any help studying for them
This course is horrible. Extremely boring and long lectures. He rants the entire class period about the criminal justice system. The content is not helpful at all. Claims to hate the textbook yet assigns hundreds of pages for reading homework. Very little assignments so very hard to get a good grade. Only enters quizzes and tests for your grade.
The entire class is based on quizzes and tests nothing more. He is so dry when he lectures. If you are expecting to get an A because it is a 101 course, don't take this class. He cares more about ranting about how bad the text book/criminal justice system is in the US than teaching the class.
Honestly this was the first class I actually retained information from. He grades very few things and if you do not do well on the weekly quizzes it can really affect your grade. So pay close attention during his lectures. He is very passionate about his teachings.
This is by far the worst class I have ever been a part of. Dry lectures with no notes posted online to be accessed after class. Piles on the notes for the exams and he does not seem to understand that students have more than JUST his class. I would never take this class ever again.
He is a very passionate professor. This helps understand the material a lot easier. He is very willing to help and answer any questions that you have. Notes are pretty heavy, but he does not give information that will not be vital to exams.
Although the class is a bit challenging, and is definitely NOT the easy A that you are very likely looking for, the class is still interesting and worth taking. He makes you work for your grade, but is definitely there to help you out. You just have to ask questions, be inquisitive and pay attention during the lectures
I think professor Bisto, according to the ratings, has improved his teaching methods over the last couple of years. His lectures are interesting and heavy. The papers and concepts you have to write about are complex but make you a better writer. Would take another class he teaches.
Everything online says that this class is "fun" but definitely not my experience. You write down notes from a 75 minute lecture and the test is more application of the notes. The review sessions aren't very helpful for the tests. Literally your grade is dependent on how you do on the exams. The quizzes are easy if you took good notes. So boring.
Teacher super passionate about what he is teaching. Grades very tough but helps you learn to be a better note-taker, reader, and writer. Papers cover very important social justice issues, and he helps you understand the topics. Always willing to help a student out who asks questions and makes an effort.
Minimal work outside of class. Every other week or so there will be an activity/quiz outside of class. He tells you exactly what is on the test and goes over answers as a class. Always gives time to ask questions.
He isnt an awful teacher but i wouldnt take him againHe has three major tests that can either really help your grade or fail you completely. You have to be able to attend lectures, take notes, and study. If youre not willing to do those you will probably not do too well in his class. He doesnt post lectures and does not excuse absences either.
Professor Bisto's lectures were super heavy, definitely be ready to take lots of notes. However, I learned so much in this class! There are three big exams that can hurt your grade if you don't study, since there aren't too many opportunities to make up that grade. He doesn't do one huge cumulative exam though, which is very helpful with studying,
There are 3-4 texts you have to read each week, varying from 10-50 pages each. There are 8 papers you have to write throughout the semester having only 3 days to a week to write each one. Final paper is 300 points and he only gives you a week to do it and it has to be over 12 pages long. It is also due a couple days before the final exam. Good Luck
Dr. Bisto is a very good professor. His lectures are long, but he's very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is teaching. We wrote many papers, but I have significantly grown as a writer during the course of the semester. This class was really challenging, but overall he is a great professor and I would take the class again.
Mr. Bisto is a pretty great professor, he is funny and understandable but does give multiple assignments such as weekly short responses or mini quizzes. He does reviews before every test which truly helps prepare you for his exams (there is only 3) and he isn't a tough grader. It's a good amount of work and a lot of information to take in.
Dr Bisto is clearly enthusiastic about what he teaches, but his lectures tend to get boring and monotonous after a while. short assignments and open note quizzes were a great way to bump your grade up a little before the unit tests.
Easy enough class, 3 tests and multiple short quizzes and assignments to help your grade but attendance is required and lots of long, boring lectures. The tests contain lots of information, makes it very difficult to study for and a bit to much in my opinion. He was really nice sometimes but others he was a bit disrespectful to students.
Much of the material on tests is only discussed in Professor Bisto's lectures, so if you miss the lectures, you will struggle. Unfortunately, the lectures are not very conducive to note-taking. Reading the textbook helps for comprehension. The homework is relatively light, and review days before exams are incredibly helpful.
You start right away and he grades loosely for the first part of the semester but once you have a few papers under your belt he expects perfection. Throughout the course you will write around 8 essays ranging from 2-6 pages and for the final paper expect a 10-12 page essay.
I personally found his lectures to be very interesting .He gave great insight into the topics of discussion and was very passionate about a lot of what he was teaching. The exams covered a lot, which made them a bit difficult to study for, but he made it very clear exactly what was going to be on the exam. Overall, I found the class interesting.
This guy is definitely gonna give you the hardest time in modern college. The syllabus will have little to no assignment details and he's gonna drop a 10 page paper on you and call it a short paper. I understand hard essay assignment, however this is not a short paper plus he will not give you info on the assignment until a week before due.Not cool
Took this class for an elective, big mistake. The class is on old articles each week 3-6 that range from 5-45 pages long and you take a quiz on only one. He expects you to know all of the material by the exam time. Have to have the material 100% accurate or he will count the answers wrong. Lectures are long and also have all of that on the exam.
he is a cool teacher and also provides several extra credit opportunities! every class is a lecture so you need to pay attention and take notes. only three exams total though! one assignment per week.
Overall, would not take his class again. There are better classes with excellent professors. Unless you like heavy class lectures and exams this is your class. But if you are trying to take it just for the course and concepts of it, take another class.
Never responded to any of my emails unless I approached him in person about it..
Just do not take any of the courses with this professor, except for those of you who like heavy lectures and significant exam grades. The last exam is 50 questions, 3 points each. You write a "short paper" of 10 pages with a lot of sources in ASA!? If you want a fun/laid-back class, would not recommend it. this course. Save your money and time.
Once you start, you will be reading heavily and the lectures are boring. There are no posted lectures, so miss a day? That's too bad. Exams and the short paper are dense on your grades. Oh don't ask for help, there is no use. I would overall suggest any other course and professor. If you want time for your other courses don't take this class:)
Not a good professor at all I am I read the reviews and thought I would give him a shot but I definitely regret it now. It seems as though this professor does not want you to succeed in class he told a story about how he was upset his students had to take a final online because they did well, and he was upset because he expected them to fail.
Lectures are interesting and easy to follow along to. Attendance is mandatory, and I'd definitely recommend you go as he doesn't post the slides anywhere for you to see after the class is over, which sucks a little. Exams are tough, but the review days are essential - he goes in depth about everything. Would take this class again!
I thought he was funny and if you study and take good notes the tests aren't hard.
Good lectures you have to pay attention and take notes and if you participate and read the textbook then you should be able to pass the class easy
I hope you all read these reviews and understand what this professor is about. I do not recommend taking his classes at all. I believe in you guys for the success you aim to achieve and it does not happen with this professor. Save your money and knowledge and do not takes any of his classes.
Andrew we know you wrote the other positive reviews be fr no one would say that about you, he is not a good. professor and he grades super hard I never had B and I do now because of him he is a bad professor
Amazing professor! The lectures were heavy but interesting. As long as you take notes, the tests are pretty easy.
He's a great professor to have for ccj101. The only reason why I received a C was because I did not attend classes all of the time and I did not turn in two assignments. The course is lecture-heavy, but you can honestly get the material down easily and understand it. It is a pretty simple class, you can get an A if you show up and do the work.
Pros: Bisto is clearly very passionate about the subjects he teaches, and it shines through in his lectures. He also gives detailed feedback on papers. Take his class if you want to become a better writer. Cons: He is condescending and disrespectful whenever he interacts with students. His responses to questions are rude and dismissive.
Class is very lecture heavy. Really enjoyed the professor. Takes attendance every day. Bi-weekly quizzes, pretty straight forward if you went to the lecture. Bi-weekly assignments, these were pretty easy but graded semi-harshly. 3 total exams, decently hard but if you went to the lectures and studied, you should do fine.
Best professor, he makes assignments clear and easy if you do the reading. Makes funny jokes in class and keeps a lighthearted tone. tests are not difficult but go through a lot of material 10/10.
One of the hardest classes and one of the few I've retained info from. He is the first professor I have had that systematically breaks down and critiques the data and theory of academic misinformation, not to mention in a topic I lovec- pervasive drug use misinformation/propoganda
Extremely strict professor! You have quizzes every week and exams nonstop. Lots of reading in this class on the marijuana tax act and everything leading into it. Every week there is about 4 articles to read they are usually very long and confusing. For the exams you will need to know exact numbers and dates of everything because it will be asked.
He is very strict and test heavy, lots of reading required every week and attendance is required. He does not post his slides or give out a study guide.
I had this professor my freshman year along with my last spring semester. He's a very tough grader. If you don't read the textbook you won't be able understand anything going on. I had to drop the class due to how hard it is.
He was ok. He is genuinely a kind and passionate man, however I did not enjoy his class. Quizzes and tests make up your grade, but they are often times confusing and have trick questions or super specific to a single sentence out of 20 pages of reading. If you do not need the class, I wouldn't take it. Almost received by first bad grade out of it.
I don't like him, he was so boring and I hated that class
He knows what he's doing and what he's talking about, but he does not care to make the information interesting nor engaging. It's incredibly boring but there are so little assignments and attendance is graded so show up!! I left his class to take a nap but his tests are a bit complicated to those who completely don't listen.
He wasn't terrible but the class wasn't amazing. We were required to buy a book for the course and not once did we use it. His tests were very difficult and he barely went over any of the content that would be on the test. He was very knowledgeable on the subject but he didn't explain in full detail to where students understood as well.
Not that enjoyable honestly. He knows what he is talking about, however it is not engaging for students. His lectures do not really reflect tests. Not horrible, but not the best.
Professor Bistro is chill. CCJ215 isn't hard. You just need to show up to class. Prior to Midterms, he takes an entire class period to do a review session which is really helpful if you actually engage with him. The one thing about him that is iffy is that he talks very slowly and pauses for a while to linger upon a subject.
Lots of lecturing, little assignments in class. Quiz every week and critical assessments (couple of paragraphs based on questions) every once in a while. His instructions for papers and critical assessments are unclear and vague.
I loved his class
Bisto is very clearly an educated, intelligent professor. You can that he is passionate about what he teaches, which is hard to find in professors in this day and age. His class was difficult, but I found that I barely studied and passed with an A. If you actually listen to his lectures, take good notes, and lean into his passion, you'll pass.
This class is filled with dense readings that can range from 6-19 pages long. He assigns 3-4 readings a week and we have a quiz mostly every week on the readings. The exams and quizzes take up the majority of your grade. I will not recommend this class if you don't have lots of time to read. I do enjoy the professor, hes very passionate.
While there is a required textbook that he pulls specific info from, he generally covers everything for the tests in his lectures and is very clear about expectations. He also takes a whole class period before exams to provide a study guide and answer questions which was so helpful!
He goes over all necessary info in his lectures, sometimes referencing specific info from the book for exams. He goes over the study guide in the class before the exam and answers all questions too. There are also not very many homework assignments and they are all easy and quick.
I loved Bisto in previous classes, but this one felt really tricky. We only got graded on tests and exams, so if you got test anxiety, this class is NOT for you. Very little time to prepare for quizzes, and not enough review to affectively pass the exams with good grades. Really needed to be more clear on what we needed to know for the exams.
Great guy! Amazing lectures and so fun to listen to. Would take him for every CCJ course if I could. Homework is pretty hard and so are the exams but if you study and attend class, it is much easier. Very involved and kind to every student. Really makes your day just by attending.
WARNING. Bisto is passionate but grades incredibly slow, is extremely condescending, and gives directions that are UNBELIVABLY vague and minimal. Do not let my grade fool you, this class was miserable. The most frustrating part of this course was his commitment to providing lackluster directions but still grading harshly.
This professor appears condescending when answering questions. Grades negatively based on opinions of readings rather than the analysis. Took several weeks to receive grades, and no constructive feedback. Lectures with cluttered confusing slides and long quotes and never posts them. Do not be swayed by good reviews, do NOT recommend this class
Very vague and confusing lectures. He is very passionate and can be helpful if approached, but the exam is strictly graded on quizzes and exams. Very few homework assignments; you also don't have any cushion on your grade. Don't recommend if you don't have time for a lot of readings or aren't great at studying/finding answers on your own.
Professor Bisto wasn't a bad teacher, but his content was heavily data-driven and kind of boring if that's not what you like. He lectures with information straight from the textbook and was really harsh when grading papers, deducting 0.25 points and stuff like that for minuscule errors. It also takes forever to get your grades back on assignments.
He was a great professor who is passionate about what he teaches especially when talking about white-collared crime. It was definitely my most interesting class, and he discusses everything that he will put on the exams. He is very nice and supportive.
I honestly dreaded this class. He was interesting, but his teaching style was very monotone. He's also extremely hard to reach through email when you need something. I wouldn't take this course with him again. He's a very picky grader, so be prepared to cite everything perfectly.
