Plenty of reading to be done in his class. Very nice and willing to help you succeed. Office hours make him very available and he is very approachable. Material is not difficult if you read, and will sometimes post quiz questions online so you know what to read towards. Overall, an excellent professor.
Great teacher and willing to help you learn. Definitely not clear on the assignments he expects you to finish.
Three words for this class: horrible, hard, waste. This class was the hardest English course I have ever had. He assigned at least 30 pages to read EVERY night. He taught this class like a graduate course. Do yourself a favor and NEVER take him.
Great professor as long as you participate in class you will be fine. Always available to help you with writing if you need it. Put no effort into class and I still recieved a B.
This course is too subjective to benefit students. Would not recommend taking his class.
He is wanting graduate work from a 300 level class.
A little monotone, but an awesome professor. Willing to work with you. Participation is a must in class. Very exact on what he wants in his assignments, he hands out example with each assignment.
If you don't want to read in this class, or show up, you might as well forget it. If you read, and express ANY kind of concern (for due dates, for content, for understanding) he will address that concern. You do have to try, yes. But, I got a lot out of this class. #1 LitPhil Teacher.
Andrew Black is an awful professor. I will never take him again if I have a choice.
Nice person, but the workload is horrible. I am an international student and you have to write a lot of papers. Almost every class a little quiz. Every day two or more hours to spend on the homework. Nice guy, but do not take him.
Dr. Black's class was amazing, engaging and enjoyable. The daily quizes were difficult to keep up with, but if you do the reading they aren't challenging. He's very available for help with papers and wants to help you get the best grade in the course as possible. Loved his class and the professor, would love to take a course again.
Dr. Black is a great professor. His classes are entertaining and interesting . It was a much better class than I ever expected. He gives lots of grades to help you as much as possible. However, his final test was out of nowhere and he grades papers extremely tough. Sometimes, I do not agree with his grading of papers.
Haven't read anything new in the class and all the works are treated clinically. You don't delve into the why's The quizzes in class each day are easy His papers are awful Also one of those professors that doesn't like giving A's on them This class is like Intro to How To Write 3rd Grade Paper 101 except what he wants crammed inside is ridiculous
He is an awful professor, literally is the most boring professor ever! And is so picky like ridiculously picky! I would not recommend him, he loves what he does but makes you hate it!
If you have a job, have the slightest of social life, or some what involved in your community, you should give it up. This class requires you to do absolutely nothing outside of this class. I had work every single day. Everything due in this class must be in essay form. He is a tough grader. Each book you read, you have at least 4 writing assign.
Dr. Black was an awesome professor. I had him for ENG105 and definitely took a lot from his class. I received an A, although I certainly had to work hard for it. However, if you do exactly what he asks on his assignments, you'll also do well!
I took Professor Black for my freshman ENG105 and it was pretty hard. He grades hard, and you must participate in class because he counts it as a "participation grade." If you do take a class with him I recommend to go to his office hours and get help on papers because he will boast your paper grades and bump you if you do.
I took Western Humanities online with Dr. Black and it went really well. There is obviously a lot of reading that came with the class, kinda boring but it was the content was as interesting as possible. You have to do the readings and reply thoroughly to do well, but it is by far, not a difficult class.
Dr. Black is a great guy. He knows what he is talking about and encourages discussion. In fact, this class is based on your participation in discussion. He's pretty easy to talk to and is reasonable in what he expects in assignments. Sometimes, though, the reading can be extremely heavy (which should be expected with Restoration Literature).
Dr. Black is a hilarious man. You do have to work for your grade but he makes it very easy to communicate with him and get projects done. He wants you to get an A and will work with you to make that happen. you get out of this class what you put into it.
Expect to be back in highschool with a teacher that just hands out papers left and right, mandatory reading, and doesn't teach you how to get better at papers. Grades papers like you are a graduate student majoring in English yet its a freshman class. Do not take him. You will not get a high grade. You will probably want to cry after every class.
Dr. Black gave a lot of papers to write, but what else could you expect from an English class? If you write them exactly how he wants them, then you'll be fine in this class. There is quite a bit of reading in this class. He starts every class with a quiz. Your participation matters in this class because it is daily points.
I really wanted to like this class. I like Dr. Black, he seems knowledgeable and I think he does care if students learn. But the content we covered was incredibly confusing, the amount of reading was overwhelming, and I don't feel like we covered anything well enough for me to confidently say that I learned and understood it.
With Dr. Black, there are a lot of quizzes over the material you read. Definitely participate in his lectures because he likes a discussion. He will work with you if you aren't doing well in his class and he gives a bunch of extra credit opportunities.
Lots of quizzes, but also lots of extra credit opportunities. There's a lot of reading for the class, so expect to be quizzed daily. He's also very engaging with the class content and is relatable at times.
He cares about what hes doing and recognizes hard work. I mostly got by with skimming the readings. Id get 80-90s on the quizzes doing this. I ended with a b in the class but since my final project was so good he changed it to an A, so just show effort and you will be okay.
He's super nice and clearly cares about what he teachers and his students. The only bad thing is it is a TON of homework and he does not let you get away with half done work.
Dr. Black gives you a lot of work but makes sure you always have opportunities to get a good grade just do the work. His lectures are enjoyable and he explains everything so discuss and ask questions
I was in an online class and could not keep with assignments and readings. The class was a lot of reading and referring to other text and too much reading for one assignment. I felt overwhelmed and felt like the effort I did install in quizzes were reflected in my grades. Not full time job and full time student friendly.
Hes honestly one of the best professors Ive ever had! He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed! Very understanding and eager to help if youre struggling with the course material! Also, hes very funnyclass discussions are very laid-back and chill!
Professor Black is a really great teacher if youre willing to put in the work gor his class. He goes above and beyond to help you anytime you need it. The content in his class is not easy, but he is open to many viewpoint and likes to hear different sides. He wants to see his students succeed so he offers small assignments for some extra credit.
Dr. Black is helpful and gives good feedback. He offers much extra credit in small assignments and is always open to zoom or email if you have issues with any assignment. Although his homework assignments can be, at times, a little overwhelming, they are for the best and help your grade tremendously! I highly recommend him! He is very understanding
Dr. Black is an amazing teacher. He would allow us to send in rough drafts and give us feedback, so that we could make a better grade. He also is very caring, he would leave comments on assignments like, this is very interesting, good work. Its nice to know youre doing well from comments rather than looking at a letter grade.
Professor Black is a very good professor! He cares about giving feedback so you know where to improve. Gives multiple extra credit opportunities. A lot of homework but allows late homework, which is helpful for some. Very interested in making sure you preform your best work!
Dr. Black is a cool, funny, weird, and super woke professor. You have to work hard, but he works just as hard to help you along the way. He gives many opportunities for you to improve and understand the material. I enjoyed his class so much that I took several of his courses!
Dr. Black ruined Film classes for me. By that, I mean that he made a film course that was insightful and made me critically assess long assumed beliefs about Cinema by using more diverse movies than the traditional classics that get trotted out over and over again. Ruined the other traditional film classes for me. Great Guy. Loves Audrey Hepburn.
Dr. Black is my favorite professor at Murray State. I've had several classes with him, and though it can be a lot of reading, the classes are group discussion based and can be really fun. Do your readings and participate and you'll have a good time. Try to be creative with your papers, it'll be more fun for you, and Dr. Black will appreciate it too
Professor Black is honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's great at making sure everyone has time to do assignments, is very thoughtful with his semester scheduling & any conflicts that may arise, & goes out of his way to create an inclusive & comfortable environment for everyone. He's also very knowledgable & teaches a great class!
If I could take the rest of my college classes with Dr. Black, I would, 100%. He gives out a lot of assignments, but if you follow the requirements you'll do fine. He's really understanding when things go awry, and is very helpful when one slams face-first into a brick wall. 10/10 professor, 10/10 person, also has a really cute dog. We stan.
Dr. Black has a well rounded agenda for each class. As long as you review all the information and follow instruction you will do fine. He does give out a lot of work, but it is fun and informative work that will expand your thinking and teach you things you do not already know about. The best part of the class is the introduction to new things.
Professor Black's class was a lot of work and dedication to reading, critical thinking, and writing. But, he provides a lot of information to allow students to succeed in his class. Personally, I enjoyed the class and having him as a professor even though it was a lot of work. He always had thoughtful and helpful feedback on assignments.
There is a lot of reading and writing involved and he really makes you think however, I really learned a lot in his class and I didn't think I would learn anything from the readings. He really makes you work for your grade but I believe that he works as hard as you do if not harder and actually gives you proper feedback when it's needed.
Although there is a bit more required reading than the average class AB provides so many resources to help you fully understand the text! Assignments are intellectually stimulating, his grading is fair and he provides lots of feedback. LOTS of opportunities for extra credit and he accepts assignments up to 5 days late! Cool guy, great professor!
Professor Black is my favorite professor here so far. His class is mainly writing assignments of different lengths and he always is available for feedback as you write. Definitely use him as a resource you will do A LOT better on the papers.
Dr. Black is one of the best professors I've had! He pushes students to think critically about the material. He is super nice and approachable, and assignments are challenging but reasonable. He is also very engaging and somehow usually manages to tie Kesha into his lectures on pre-1760 English literature, which is always a treat. :)
Dr. Black is one of my favorite professors of all time! He's very engaging and genuinely cares about his students' understanding and success. There were a lot of papers, but he was reasonable with the work and due dates. He also gave a lot of chances for extra credit. I would recommend his class to anybody.
Dr Black gives plenty of time to complete assignments. He is aware of the busy life of most students who take on line classes, the working people will love this class. If you participate and make an honest effort, there will be no problems.
Honestly, I love history and essays so most assignments were very easy for me. He does this thing with stuff due. I had an insanely busy schedule so stuff due wouldn't be actually due till five days after the fact. That way most of the time I would wait till either I had time in my schedule or the day it was due to do all of it. Overall 10/10.
Professor Black has great recorded lectures. He offers lots of extra credit. The books that you are required to read are pretty enjoyable. As long as you read and complete assignments Professor Black makes this a great class to take!
Prof. Black is a great professor! There's quite a lot of work in this course and it can be overwhelming, but it's manageable if you're determined. There's a lot of reading, but the hard part is how he asks for notes/annotations on nearly everything you read. He really cares though - about making sure the students learn and about his subject.
Dr. Black is an engaging teacher in the classroom. What is not amazing is the workload. Over the course of the semester it becomes difficult to stay up to date with assignments, so much so that it's better to just not do some of them and take the loss of points. He does not seem to understand that his students have other classes as well.
Do not take this guy. Expects 6+ hours of work each week and he can't even be bothered to correct his typos all over the canvas for the course. Clear expectations though.
Very knowledgeable teacher and a good variety of material!
Dr. Black is one of the best professors. He makes HUM 211 FUN. Not boring. We watched a movie at the beginning of the semester and I was so into it! I showed my family it because it had you on your feet the entire time! He is understanding, funny, and respectful. This is a college course, not a high-school course, yes there will be more work.
Professor Black is very good at communicating and understanding that life happens. You definitely have to stay on top of your assignments, but if you just sit down and spend the time to complete them, they aren't difficult or overwhelming. He wants you to do well in his class and he will help you succeed.
Doctor Black was so funny and found ways to relate Kesha and even Harry Styles to early British literature. We had a Discord server to post notes so it was easy to see them if you missed a class. There is a ton of reading (it is a literature class..), but it's not bad if you sit down and crank it out! He actually made me excited for class!
I would not recommend this course for anyone that has responsibilities outside of school, such as work or a family life. While he gives you the questions ahead of time for quizzes, there is not enough time to cover the amount of material he expects you to read/write. I found myself skipping assignments because they were only worth a couple points.
Professor Black has been an amazing professor from the beginning of the semester. He always provides me with amazing feedback on how to better my assignments and encourages me to keep up my hard work. There is quite a bit of reading involved but Professor Black chooses interesting works of literature and makes the learning fun. 100% recommend!
I hate leaving this review because Dr. Black is probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. You will be tested on every single little detail we read. This class was more than half of my work load. I will now be graduating late because I will have to wait to take certain classes to make sure I don't have to take him again.
I really liked Dr. Black! He is very genuine and his feedback on assignments is awesome. I would encourage you to stay on top of assignments (don't procrastinate like I did, haha). He clearly cares about his students and he gives lots of opportunities for bonus!
Dr. Black is amazing! Yes, there's a lot of reading and writing, but it's a college-level literature class, so that's to be expected. I really liked that most assignments had a five-day extension, and there were plenty of extra credit opportunities! The lectures were also great and engaging! Excellent class and very caring professor! Recommend!
Dr. Black honestly slays fr. We had so many interesting lectures and it was easy to stay focused and engaged since the conversation took a drastic turn very often. All I can recommend would be to do all the readings, online assignments, and show up and participate in class- every point helps. Exams are hard, but there's only a midterm and final. :)
Dr. Black was an amazing professor! He definitely would hear out your ideas and would help solidify them into a concept that works well with the readings. I had a great time with him and took another class with him! He was also super understanding when I was sick and helped me get caught up.
GUYSSSS! Take Dr. Black for ANYTHING literature. So serious, I don't usually leave ratemyprofessors but Dr. Black is seriously one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life. British Literature can sometimes be difficult, but he makes it so fun. Lots of hw, but it will be learning that lasts a lifetime! The man is really a gifted educator.
Dr. Black makes it clear what you need to do/know for each assignment/paper. You have to spend time on this class, but that goes hand in hand with an online class. I would highly recommend taking Dr. Black's class for your humanities credit. He cares about your success and cares a lot about what he is teaching, which I think is very important.
Dr. Black is one of the best professors in the English Department at MSU. He is clear with his expectations for his students and will hold them accountable for their grade. He gives ample time to complete all assignments and will not surprise you with anything out of the ordinary. 10/10 recommend but you must attend class!
Dr. Black is always willing to help with assignments, answer questions, and he gives great feedback! Expect a lot of work and writing (like 6-8 hours/week- read his syllabus!). He does offer a ton of extra credit assignments throughout the semester though and gives a 5-day extension on almost all assignments! Would definitely recommend for HUM 211!
Dr. Black was a great professor! Although I only took his class online so I didn't get the full effect of his in-person lectures that I have read about on here, his online lectures are still very interesting and fun! He gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit, allows a 5 day extension on 90% of assignments. Great class!
Dr. Black slays. This class was more of a discussion. He encouraged pushback on some dated/damaging ideas in the plays and likes if you have hot takes. Talk to him about the direction you're taking in your papers, submit drafts for his bonuses and edit according to the advice he gives. It helps with good grades on papers, trust me.
Dr. Black is relatable and laid back. HUM211 consisted of reading/short essay writing-nothing excessive. Online PDFs for some books. Always available by email. Provided clear expectations and amazing feedback. Five-day grace period on 99% of assignments-weekly extra credit opportunities. Deeply cares about students and made me feel like I mattered.
This professor one of the worst I've had.He doesn't provide clear feedback. He told us to write an argumentative paper so I chose gun laws. He never said what the topic had to be but after I turn it in he tells me it's an inappropriate topic for a paper and my score could be anywhere from a 50-70 but it can't be any higher.
As long as you put in effort you will get a good grade. Attendance does matter, and you cant go on your phone in class. You will get points off for this. As long as you follow directions and make an effort you will get a good grade and class will be fun.
Professor Black was a very good professor. He taught well and was very informative with his feedback.
Really cares about what he's teaching you and works really hard to make class entertaining and the content accessible. It is a lot of reading, but worth it for the discussions. He's just generally so respectful and caring. And very funny. I would 100% take again
Dr. Black is one of my favorite professors! I've had him a class with him almost every semester and I've enjoyed every one. He is super passionate about what he teaches and encourages you to find ways you can 'enter' the topics in ways you feel passionate about. He's always makes his material super interesting and engaging. Honestly, 10/10.
An engaging professor who makes long Tue/Thur classes fly by. We frequently read or watched plays for homework; there was usually an accompanying open-book quiz or note-taking assignment. He grades reasonably, offers lots of opportunities for extra credit, and communicates well. The first play was Hamilton! The final project is a lot of work.
His readings are quite lengthy and the written quiz responses require too much time and thought which happens often. I spend more time in this class stressing and doing homework than my own major which I should be focusing on
This professor is very thorough, quick at responding to questions, and offers a ton of extra credit and assignments, which is great. Even though it is an online class which normally means more work, I still feel that the amount of homework is a bit much. Notifications about assignments EVERY day. WAY more strict about AI compared to other profs.
Professor Black made ENG105 much more interesting than I was expecting. The research and topics we covered in class were fun to discuss and think about. Black gave great feedback, and I became a much better writer from taking this class. The one downside is the amount of homework, so make sure the rest of your workload is on the lighter side
Very engaging and clearly enthusiastic about what he is teaching. He gives a lot of reading, but it really helps to hold you accountable and keep up.
Dr. Black was awesome. I had him online, but that didn't stop him from being involved with his students. There wasn't an unreasonable amount of work, and he even gives extensions on due dates. If you turn it in on time, he'll give you feedback for next time. The fact that he replies to the comments on here tells you that he cares. I recommend him!
If you are looking into taking a course with Professor Black, I highly suggest doing so! He was always willing to understand me, even when I would just pop into his office to chat. He also gives ample ways to earn extra credit in the class. If you put in the effort to show up and do the work, you will pass!
Dr. Black is an AMAZING professor, and his class is so much fun. Some of the readings he assigns are kinda long, and he gives assignments to go with them, but those things are open book/open note, and he gives lots of opportunities for feedback on papers. He also gives A LOT of bonus opportunities. 10/10 would take again :-)
There is a lot of reading in this class, so be ready for that and make sure that you have the materials to read. Sometimes the writing prompts and instruction aren't very clear, but he does respond quickly if you email with any questions.
While Dr. Black may have come off as a little intimidating at the beginning of the semester, I genuinely enjoyed his class. He's very accessible and cares very much about his work. You'll pass as long as you put in the work and don't try to cheat. And don't be intimidated by the writing—he will tell you if anything is wrong and how to fix it.
Andrew Black is a fantastic professor. It is evident that he is enthusiastic about teaching, he encourages creative thinking, and he is very knowledgeable (but not in an obnoxious "I'm the smartest person in the room" way- in a humble genuine way). He gives you everything you need to succeed, it is up to you to make the effort.
If your interested in the subject any class with him will be amazing
I 100% recommend taking his online HUM 211 class. Yes, you will do a lot of reading and writing, but it is broken down so that it is manageable. He was very responsive to questions and always gave great feedback. He included short lectures with many of his assignments that were engaging and informative to what your assignments were. Great class!
I truly liked this professor as a person. He is funny, and I feel that he truly cares for his students. However..if you are taking a lot of classes and / or working a whole bunch of hours or multiple jobs like I am, it is unmanageable to keep up with the workload of this class. But, if you have minimal hours and dont work much, you may do well.
Dr. Black is wonderful! He really knows his stuff. He makes learning complicated literature really engaging. He likes to blend pop culture with the reading which is really helpful. He makes getting participation in this class easy because you have options. He also really cares about his students success inside and outside of class.
A lot of work. Two assignments every week that took about an hour and a half to two hours. The midterm was quite difficult; I assume the final will be as well. We can choose when to turn in papers throughout the course, awesome. Biggest suggestion is putting time aside to complete assignments and do the extra credit offered throughout the course.
Dr. Black is an incredibly nice and intelligent professor. He is a blast to talk to and he genuinely cares about the students in his class. There's quite a bit of reading, but don't let that scare you! Build good habits for yourself and you're bound to succeed.
Dr. Black is very clear about all of his policies -- grading, attendance, A.I., etc. -- it is very discussion heavy so get ready to talk in class; however, if you don't talk in class you will just get a deduction off participation. Weekly readings, quizzes, and multiple assignments. This class takes a lot of time, but worth it!
He is just too arrogant, he will assume just because you don't engage in class or don't understand/enjoy the reading that the class is too advanced for you. He wants you to talk and participate in class everyday, but he only let's the same 5 people talk everyday so you never get the chance. And he deletes some of these ratings
