Buchanan is adorable. He really loves history, and knows that it's a requirement course for a lot of people, so he doesn't make it challenging at all. Make sure to go to the days when there's a debate. He's a fair grader. You'll get major brownie points for participation. His laugh is possible the cutest thing I've ever hear heard.
Andy is the man. He is a good grader, but just go to class. He really like sthe subject matter and it shows in his teaching
I don't see how you could not do well in his class. I took 2 classes with him never did a single reading, did fine. Tests are open note/book, you have two essays to write during the semester, he's generous if you're late or need help. Grades tests hard but it's so easy to prepare. Great guy, interesting lectures. Easy B with some effort.
I Love Buchanan! He was a great professor. Easy class, I did no readings and passed with an A. He is a cute english man but loves American History. I strongly recommend him!
easy class
Buchanan is a great teacher and a great guy. Pretty easy class....no trouble getting a B without doing the readings.
I love this guy. He has an awesome accent and the class is pretty easy as long as you can write semi-decent papers. His exams are all open book and he gives you the topics ahead of time. I'm not a huge history buff but he made it really interesting. Definitely take this class!
BEST PROFESSOR AT UVM!!!! LOVE HIM!!!!!!
Andy is the man, he makes history fun and is really fare about grading. He's always willing to help when you've go an issue and if you give him a good reason he'll give you an extension on papers. Really really great professor at UVM.
very helpful and understanding. may seem dull in the beginning, but definitely gets more interesting. take good notes since he bases his exams on the notes- dont really need to do readings that much, except for his essays, but they're good if you want to get A+s on your exams. very funny man and nice
Awesome Professor! Andy is funny and knows how to lighten up a dull subject. He is Very flexible and willing to work with anyone. The reading is not mandatory but if you do the reading you will better understand the class.
this guy is awesome! if you are into history take this class. only grades are 4 essays a midterm and the final. exams are all essay and pretty self explanatory. dont really need to do the readings but listening in class or taking notes is good because he doesnt post his notes or slides. may seem dull but really a cool guy and pretty easy class.
He is a great guy and is always there to help you if you need it. My only problem with this class wasn't him but the TA, or at least the rubric, it always seemed no matter how much time you put into the papers and made sure to fully answer the questions with supporting quotes you only ALWAYS got a B or B+
Prof. Buchanan is awesome; he has a marvelous dry wit, cheerful disposition, and mind like a steel bear trap. Blew my uninformed opinions right out of the water, and then helped me write an excellent term paper. His classes are the best!
Buchanan is awesome! He's understanding, very clear on what he's teaching, and pretty funny too :) He's one of those teachers that curse mildly in class. I would love to take another class with Buchanan! There are a lot of readings, but you don't have to do them if you go to all the classes (unless you want an A or A+) Definitely take him!
Prof. Buchanan is an excellent, organized and entertaining instructor. I really enjoyed his class (WWII) and would recommend him for sure.
Andy is a very nice guy, maybe even "lovable". (For HST009) You can learn a lot if you do the readings before class. His lecture notes seem original, and that's what the tests are based on. Take good notes. Super easy to get a B, but the man does not give out As. If you're looking for a guaranteed easy A, you might not want to take this class.
Buchanan is a great history lecturer. He is very knowledgeable and will willingly give out an A+ if you put effort into the class (I don't know how others reviewing him here didn't get an A). He is cheerful, has a good sense of humor, adds interest to each class, and has some great discussions. I highly recommend his US military history course.
Buchanan gave original and intriguing lectures that covered broad topics in the history of globalization from 1500-present. He is enthusiastic, sharp, and always open to questions and comments despite the size of the lecture. Fair grader, heavy quoting required for an 'A' on homework, tests in essay format based on notes. Take a course with him
Buchanan is the man! Best history prof at UVM especially if military history is your thing. Easy class and interesting topics. I've taken two of his classes, I love this guy.
Very good teacher, only 4 assignments and 2 tests. Fair at grading and gives you the questions for the tests. I never needed to read the textbook because the class covered the reading
This is my favorite Professor at UVM. He gives a very candid take on US and Global military history.
Amazing professor. He's very straightforward and offers plenty of opportunities to get extra help. Has a dry sense of humor, which helps make the lectures interesting. Make sure to take notes in his class, because that's where most of the test material will come from. I'd highly recommend getting books as it really helps with discussion and such.
Fascinating lecturer, very knowledgeable, friendly,spot-on world view. Wish I had taken more classes with him. Probably my favorite history prof I've had at UVM.
This class was very interesting. It is definitely helpful to sit in front of the class. His lectures are mostly just pictures, so it's important if you're taking notes to write down the things that he says in his lectures. He was an awesome professor and was really interested and lively. He will definitely help you if you ask for help.
This class was pretty interesting. Only 4 assignments (2-3 page essays) and 2 exams (Mid-term and final). Work was easy. He uses powerpoints. Somewhat hard grader.
His lectures were long, and I often did not see the point of them. The papers he gave us were all really easy, and they pretty much told us what to write in class. His feedback was nonexistent. Overall easy class, he might be better at a higher level class.
For HST 011 the class was semi-interesting and all the essaysessay tests were straightforward. He takes attendance so you do need to show up but overall this class is an easy A, especially with all the extra credit (about 5% total to your final grade)
Great class to take pass/fail. However, I have never met anyone who actually received an A in Buchanan's class. The content itself is interesting but when the final paper is due, you'll find yourself working your butt off for a B or B+.
Coolest dude, so laid back in terms of grading and just his personality. Loved his class, was really engaging and cares so much about all students' opinions.
Great dude. Took two classes with him last year and am taking a third.
Professor Buchanan is a wonderful character, an intelligent professor and is to be respected. He does tend to ramble off in class, but boy is it fascinating when he does. I appreciate that his opinions are always backed up with good arguments and that he never makes sweeping statements. I attribute my B grade to my own laziness.
Professor Buchanan is very passionate about the world in which we live in. He can captivate an entire lecture hall with his lectures. I was never bored listening to his British accent either! He is a great guy and whenever I see him around campus we say "Hello" to one another. I recommend this class for anyone who needs to take a history class.
Professor Buchanan is the man! Super passionate and interesting guy. His lectures were always very interesting and entertaining. He knows how to keep everyone's attention and on top of that he's a super friendly guy. He gives a relatively easy going work load but yet I've learned more in his class than I have in any other history class I have taken
Andrew Buchanan is an awesome professor. He is both passionate and clear about the subject matter, and makes the course super interesting! He delves deeply into subjects -- not just what happened, but why it happened and why we should care about it today. I took HST 10 as a requirement and came back to take HST 9 (not required) he was so good!
Prof. Buchanan is a very cool guy and a pretty good professor. The only downside is he RARELY gives A's on papers and tests no matter how hard you try. Also, he likes to go on political tangents on the occasion which I found annoying.
Buchanan is an okay professor. It is true that he rarely and most often refuses to give "A's" to students. While this may be valid in some cases, for an intro. history class, it's a little harsh. I will say that he is a nice guy but I have seen better history prof's in the department. You'll be okay if you take HST 010 with him.
Andy Buchanan is by far one of the best professors I've studied under at UVM - he assigns easy papers, is always accessible to students for extra help, and makes it clear that he's actually out to HELP students' GPAs, not the opposite like a lot of other profs. Amazing person, incredible teacher, take a class w him.
Professor Buchanan has been one of my favorite professors. Although this course is mostly lectures, he is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching, and keeps everyones attention. He makes sure he is available for office hours, and is one of the most understanding and flexible professors I have had. I highly recommend taking a course with him.
Andy is a very chaotic but very nice guy. I took this class as a part of a three-course-sequence thinking that it would be easy. It's graded on 4 papers and 2 exams- meaning that you HAVE to do well on the papers in order to do well in the class. Go to his office hours if you're not the strongest writers. Material is average and easy to get through
Professor Buchanan was by far one of the best professor's I have ever had. It's always been difficult for me to stay focused in history classes, but professor Buchanan is extremely engaging, easy to work with, and just an over all great guy. I had no problem meeting with him outside of class and I honestly hated missing one of his classes. 11/10.
Andy is a good lecturer but the class grade is made up of only 3 essays and 2 exams. It is impossible to get an A+ and nearly impossible to get an A, even if you meet them for help. The final consists of writing 2 full essays by hand and 5 additional identification paragraphs in 3 hours and they see it as reasonable... Strongly disagree.
Andy is a real gem in the history department here at UVM. Loved the WWII class with him. The textbook is the book he recently published. Andy provides a well organized but brief account of the war. Lectures are super interesting. He is kinda a harsh grader though (doesn't like giving out A's).
Great professor ... fair but tough grader at the same time. It's definitely a difficult class but if you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Professor Buchanan is my favorite professor at UVM - I've taken three classes with him and, unlike wayyy too many profs, he wants his students to succeed. He's also mad sarcastic (British humor) and laid back. I asked for so many extensions and as long as I got them to him within a week, he didn't care at all. 10/10 !!
I really liked this class, but it lost its charm once we switched to online lectures. Dry humor, and interesting content, lectured for the whole 50 minute block accompanied by slides. The TAs are what make or break the course. Lots of long, dry readings. 4 papers (40%) midterm (25%) and final (35%) plus two bonus points for perfect attendance.
I LOVE ANDY!! His lectures are super interesting, and he's very funny. He did a great job adapting to a 'mixed' format, with recorded lectures and weekly discussion sessions where we submit comments on the lectures. I can tell he is really passionate about history, which makes him even more fun to listen to. Take a class with him if you can!
Grading hard & unclear; based off of a weekly question & comment page in response to lectures which are often very self explanatory and little room for anything to say. There is no rubric for which these are graded. There are midterm & final essays that don't have grading rubrics either. Material is interesting but the work assigned is not.
I adore Prof Buchanan, so much so that I took another of his classes the following semester. It was also just a fun, different perspective on global history, focusing on human interaction with the environment. There are a bunch of readings, but I probably only did about 10% and still got an A-. The lectures and class are necessary.
Horrible class planning/layout, you'll always be playing a guessing game when it comes to what you should write about for homework/assignments. On top of that, Andy is one of those "I don't give A's" profs. (Perfect storm for discouraging students.) I would strongly counsel anyone away from taking a class with him, especially an intro level.
I took Race, War, and Identity and GRS001. Both were easy as he's a great engaging lecturer, but this class was almost exclusively student-led discussions. The final grade is just a book and a movie review, a 15-page paper, and participation, which was easy for me. He is super smart, nice, very flexible, and a decently fair grader.
Best professor ever!
Prof. Buchanan is so passionate about history and that really shines through in his lectures- it's always great to see how invested he is in the material. Papers are easy enough to write, but expect good grades to be in the B+/A- area.
Buchanan is great, very forgiving and open to discussing individual needs. I will say it's hard to get above a B or A- on a paper from him, and the final grade is made up of 5 papers. So it can be hard to get an A. The attendance isn't counted as part of the grade, but each absence is a point off of your final score so be careful!
Adore Andy as an educator, super passionate about the subject matter, so much so it's contagious. Awesome guy as well, super understanding with a great sense of humor. Would take any class he teaches and I have no doubt I'd love it.
Professor Buchanan and this class are both amazing. The conversations had in this class were invaluable. The structure of this course is definitely discussion/conversation based, which I really appreciated. Prof. Buchanan is always accesible outside of class and is so kind, passionate about history, and more. Take a class with him if you can!
Prof Buchanan is by far my favorite professor I've had at UVM. I found his WWII class so interesting and entertaining, it was one class that I really never wanted to miss. He wrote the textbook for this class and it is very clear that he knows a lot about the subject but he is also hilarious. Tough grader on papers but I still enjoyed writing them.
100% take this class; interesting and Professor Buchanan is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. If you don't enjoy writing essays, I wouldn't recommend this class as your grade is made up solely of essays (and attendance). Daily readings-try to do them so you can participate in class-he appreciates this and this could save your grade.
Writing this to save any ENVS majors who make the same mistake I did. Do not be fooled, this class has nothing to do with envs. It's all lectures and papers (based on his boring lect and 20+ pg read). He doesn't even grade (TAs do), but he ensures no one gets an A+. If you're a hist nerd, maybe you'll enjoy it, but honestly don't waste your time.
I took it because I thought it was going to be material on environmental history but it's just a short overview of world history. He's not funny, his lectures are quite boring, and he drones on about nothing important. No lecture material is needed to write the essays. The TAs do all the reading and grading and there are no As given.
Buchanan is super knowledgeable and clearly cares about course material. Nice and accessible guy. Lectures all class, but generally interesting stuff. Papers are the only grades - take notes and you'll be good.
I've had so much fun in this class! His lectures are amazing and so engaging! He's funny and I have found myself interested in things I have never cared about before. Who new the Neolithic era was so cool??
Professor Buchanan is very funny and a great lecturer. His lectures are very cohesive and go along very well with the assigned readings. There are no tests or homework just 5 essays over the semester. As long as you take notes and skim the readings you will do well on the essays.
I am not a history major, but this class was very practical. Buchanan has amazing lectures. There are only a few papers, but many opportunities to get assistance. I really loved this course.
I LOVED THIS CLASS! Professor Buchanan can lecture about anything and make it interesting. His class inspired me to switch my major. I loved that there were no actual tests, just papers. Definitely go to the group discussions outside of class for extra credit, and to have meaningful discussions. I never did the readings and got good(ish) grades.
Very passionate about course material. Willing to entertain any questions or observations in lecture.
Buchanan is the BEST. Super funny and lets the conversation flow wherever the class wants, even if it turns ridiculous. Class is discussion based on the readings/movies. Assignments are one article or book review, one movie review, and the final research project (15 pages). History-based class but you can find your niche of what interests you.
Prof. Buchanan is awesome. He is super engaged with his students and loves to hear their opinion. He laughs at pretty much everything and his laugh is contagious. His class consists of papers which can be difficult at times but he is happy to give extensions if needed.
His lectures are super boring and he goes very quickly, but there is no graded homework that is based off of them. The only grades you get are 4 short papers and a midterm and final essay. As long as you read what's given with the essays, and have a general understanding of the history behind them, you will get a b or higher.
brtitish guy that loves history more than he loves his wife. dont listen to the bad reviews hes not PC which is a real rarity here. Not a single lecture was boring and he gives you extensions if you need them.
i found his lectures funny and engaging, but you have to make sure you actually pay attention to what he's saying because there's not much text on his slides. the essays aren't too hard once you get the hang of it but the subjects can be weird/confusing. i did no reading the entire semester and only needed to look at them for the midterm and final.
Although it took me a bit of time to warm up to him since I just wasn't that interested in the coursework during the first couple of weeks, Professor Buchanan is an unbelievably good professor. He's smart, hilarious, and gives amazing feedback. The stuff we learned about really has made me consider taking more courses in global studies.
Prof Buchanan is one of the best teachers I have had at UVM. He is highly knowledgeable about the material he teaches but he doesn't dominate the conversation. Instead, he facilitates the discussion in a way that makes it both enjoyable and valuable. His class is, in my opinion, exactly how HCOL classes should be taught. 100% would take again.
He only does lectures, but they are interesting. No tests and you are graded by 6 essays you write over the course of the semester. Overall, pretty good course.
I really liked his class and I by all means know nothing about history. He was super caring and offered extra credit, but there are no rubrics or guidelines for any assignments, so your grade can feel a little random. Overall though he was really nice, and I found the class interesting even though it wasn't my niche.
Super passionate about American history and he was super funny. As someone who doesn't enjoy history, I still could get a decent grade by not always doing the homework and doing independent research on papers. Lectures were boring to me, but he is a very kind person.
Buchanan's passion for the material is clear and nice to see. The grade for the course was determined by three papers and a longer term paper, so if you're not a fan of papers, don't take a class with him. This was my second class with him and very manageable, he's accessible in office hours and understanding when life gets in the way.
love this guy. the class i took was a lot of reading but it was interesting and he gives you a lot of opportunity to participate and get your grade up.
Maybe this is on me but I took Buchanan's WWII class expecting to talk in-depth about the social and political parts of WWII. Instead, we focused really heavily on the military aspects. I guess I didn't realize this was a military history course? Overall, pretty disappointed tbh. Don't take this class if you don't care about the guns they used lol
Prof. Buchanan is a really great historian and professor. He makes his lectures entertaining and full of information. He is also not afraid to share his opinion on matters which I think is important (even if you don't agree with it). He also tries to share lesser-known history. If you like history, take a class with him!
Andy is very knowledgeable about the subject matter, but that being said none of the assignments given require you to pay attention to his lectures, so the only reason for going is to sign the attendence sheet. The essays are not too hard but no rubric is provided, so it makes it really hard to know what he wants for each essay.
There were 6 assignments, 16 pages total + extra credit Lectures were mandatory, although we were able to miss 2 the entire semester. They were so worth going to anyway, because Andy was so incredibly passionate about what he was talking about (and hilarious at times.) He wants everyone to learn as much as possible, and he does a great job at that.
buchanan is the goat
Definitely an essay-focused course; writing assignments make up most of one's grade. Buchanan grades relatively harshly, but his lectures and his enthusiasm for the material ameliorate this significantly. He has his own methods for teaching, and there's a lack of transparency with the grading process, but he's immensely knowledgeable nevertheless.
Professor Buchanan's class was a really enjoyable experience for me. He is very knowledgable and passionate about military history and world history as a whole, and he encourages discussion while still being lecture-heavy. He conveys material pretty clearly, and as long as you do most of the readings, you should do well in the class.
