Casper is no good! He is a poor lecturer. His class is boring and he isn't helpful at all. His tests are impossible even with a slide list. He expects way too much! Try to get Adams if you need to take Art History.
This class could have been amazing. Unfortunately, it turned into a "date memorization for dummies" class. The tests were difficult only because you had to memorize over 100 dates to study for them and they didn't reflect what was taught in lecture. He did give some good extra credit, and tried to give help, overall I was really disappointed
I actually liked the teacher. I thought he was really interesting, fun and clear. Unfortunately, his tests are too difficult for a 100level class. It recquires only memorization, which is for me impossible. Art is not a name of painting, a date and a genre, it is more complicated, more beautiful than simple datas...
Casper is a really good teacher. His lecture were straight forward, sometime they were to repetitive but not that much. Attendance is not mandatory but still you need to assist to class to get all the lecture. The test are hard, but if you assist to class and study for it, you would do fine. I liked this class.
Casper's a goofy guy. He's a good teacher, considering art history tends to get a bit boring. He explains the works of art well, and shows a genuine passion for what he does. He actually made this class interesting for me. His exams are fairly easy, but you cannot wait until the night before to study. Overall, I liked his class.
He's a good guy. Know the monument lists and listen to the lectures for the basic meanings behind the pictures. Take notes if you have touble remembering lectures. He is not going to try to trick you on quizes or exams though. Very fair
Dude's sweet, funny at times, real nice guy, great professor. Easy class, lots of notes and stuff but I mean it's school, grow a pair and it's easy. Easy exams. I like the class.
Casper is a funny guy to have for art history. He likes to tell little corny jokes, and makes little awkward moments funny. He loves to talk about football. But watch out for his random 11 pop quizzes! exams are pretty easy, just review the slides.
If you have any sort of love for Art History, but don't want to spend your life memorizing it but rather analyzing it-than don't take this class. While the subject material was interesting his beyond ridiculous tests of pure memorization are not.
His tests are basically word for word of his lectures. So if you miss one, hopefully you can find someone who took the notes. It is a lot of memorization rather than analyzing, but most art classes have that format. He is interesting during class and tries to keep it upbeat.
Goofy, great guy. His class is so easy and will make an art lover out of anyone. He picks pieces that most people already know of so memorization is a breeze. Very easy to talk to in person and loves to help out. Definitely keeps class interesting. Just show up, listen, and make some flash cards.
He's pretty entertaining in lecture and very passionate about his subject which is nice. The tests will be hard if you never study the material, it's almost pure memorization.
Before coming into this class I was dreading it; however, he actually made me interested in art and made class enjoyable. The weekly quizzes force you to study so only a small amount of time is needed to study for the exams. I definitely recommend taking this class for the Miami Plan
What a goofy guy! He is pretty hilarious in lecture and loves what he does! I LOVE his class, its very fun. Make some flashcards and you'll be fine. The last few weeks are the most fun. He did have us do a paper. Not too bad. Take him and not the other art history teacher...heard he was bad.
This class is pretty simple. Memorize paintings for the weekly quizzes and exams. Doesn't take attendance but it would be beneficial because the things that are on the exams are not just what the text book says. Take for Miami Plan
If you go to class and take notes, you don't need to spend the $100+ on the textbook. He's kind of weird, but he knows what he's talking about.
Incredibly nice guy. Dr. Casper has such a great personality and sense of humor. There is not a professor here that can make an 8 AM history class as interesting as he can. The class is hard because it is a lot of memorization, but you get used to it. His tests are not bad.
Honestly, I liked the class. My only problem was it is A LOT of memorization. Also, there were 1 point quizes every week so if you're sick you miss out. Lastly, be careful, my class was at 8 AM MWF and it was painful, if you miss the class it is hard to catch up again because what he says in class is IMPORTANT, the book is secondary.
Casper is extremely helpful and really wants his students to do well. He is always energetic. Even at 8 o'clock in the morning. He makes you memorize dates for quizzes every week but it helps in the end.
Fun teacher+very serious about his teaching=great classes! STUDY FOR THE QUIZZES+GO TO CLASS! Exams aren't too difficult, not too easy either-you have to study. Unfortunately, the course includes too many monuments, maybe because there are more Architecture majors?? Not fair to Art majors. I'm not even an Art major but I wish we had seen more ART!
What a great teacher!! Fun class, loved it! His slide presentations are truly delightful. Glad I took his class.
Dr. Casper is a great teacher. Classes are fun. I loved this class and I do recommend it. Take it.
Really great professor! He likes to tell jokes and keep everything lighthearted and fun. Is really interested in getting to know all his students. Manageable workload with a few one page papers. Definitely recommend taking any class he teaches!
He's great!! he goes over all of the material in class so if you show up you have all the info you'll need! dont get the book cause he puts everything that you need from it online. absolutely loved him... i would take more of his classes if i could!
He is excellent. He is not only your professor, but also your friend.Always enegetic, creative, nice and helpful, always welcome questions, always care about you.His materials in class are important,he has quiz every week so do reading and don't absense. He asks you to write multiple essay to show your understanding which really develop critical thinking
Perfect Art History teacher! Very helpful, information is easy to learn and the exams are straight forward. He's one professor who is truly interested in his students in and out of class and is always around to talk and is very friendly! He even makes an attempt to learn all of the students names in a large lecture hall. TAKE HIM!
Thought I would be bored to death in this class, but he actually made pretty interesting. Assignments make up a large part of grade and are graded credit/no credit. Attendance mandatory due to quizzes and class discussion. Exams are a lot of memorization, but not too bad. Overall he is a great lecturer and made the subject interesting.
Perfect teacher, must take his class.
Very passionate about material and makes class interesting
This man is a genius. I was absolutely dreading having to take an Art History course, but he actually managed to make it really enjoyable. Always energetic and humorous as well. Five one-page essays and three exams per semester, with a 5-minute quiz every week. Highly recommended for those needing a Fine Arts requirement.
Dr. Casper is the PERFECT Art History teacher. I am so lucky to have taken one of his classes. He is clear and engaging and throws a lot of funny anecdotes into his lectures. He loves if you show personal interest in his lessons. This class has made me want to take many more from him and further my learning of Art History.
Dr. Casper is my favorite professor that I have had at Miami. I absolutely loved this class and every lecture. He is a great guy to talk to after class if you have questions and he wants each student to be successful. However you do have to put work into this class. It isn't an easy A but an A is very possible if you put in some effort.
Doesn't know his stuff, very opinionated. not very good historian
Dr. Casper is a very enthusiastic man. He loves what he does and you can definatly tell. Random quizzes every week, however they are easy as long as you read the correlating pages for the day. If you pay attention in class, tests should be easy. Also I made notecards with every piece of work, and studied those before every test. very helpful
One of my favorite professors at Miami. Well versed and very passionate about his subject. He keeps lectures fresh and interesting while engaging every student in a 100+ person class. He encourages student opinions and treats them with respect and enthusiasm. If you do the weekly readings, you will have no problem on quizzes and exams.
weekly quizzes based on readings, which are an easy f=grade boost if you do them, tests can be kinda confusing but overall not a bad class if you keep up with it
Easy course, just read the book, go to class, and take notes. Dr. Casper makes the subject enjoyable and fun. He has many extra credit opportunities throughout the year and doesn't require you to memorize years.
Absolutely one of the best teachers I've ever had; cares about his students, educates and humors!
You must read the assigned text to pass the quizzes and understand the lectures but he points out what is really important during lectures. Makes exam questions incredibly obvious so if you've studied you should be fine.
Casper was everything that I ever wanted in a professor. He was very passionate about what he taught, hilarious, and wanted to make sure that his students did well. Make lots of flash cards for study. This class is perfect for Gen Ed credit.
Dr. Casper is seriously an amazing professor. He is interesting, relatable, hugely intelligent, hilarious, and clear on his expectations for the class. Five 1 to 2 page papers throughout the semester, and a quiz or in-class assignment almost daily, which are very easy if you do the (usually short) assigned reading. Very willing to help students.
Dr. Casper is my favorite professor I've had so far at Miami. I took Art History - Renaissance-Modern with him and thought I would hate it and I loved being in there. He's hilarious and gives great tips on life. He doesn't care if you like or dislike the material, he's more worried about enhancing your critical thinking skills. I respect him.
Prof. Casper is one of the best professors I have had in Miami University. I took the class just to finish my Miami plan requisite but I ended up loving the class! He is so funny, so relatable and so passionate about the subject that you cant help learn the material. He is the absolute best!
he is one of my all time favorite professors because he makes his lecture interesting and he truly cares about all of his students!! Take him if you have the chance!!
Really hated the class, not so much the content, but the professor made it hard to sit through, he tries to be funny, but just wastes class time. It's a Miami plan class that he takes way too seriously which he even states on the first day. I would avoid it and go with the more boring professor who is an easier grader.
Casper is very enthusiastic and gives very engaging lectures. I took ART155 to fulfill Miami Plan and was pleasantly surprised by the course. Casper encourages class discussions. There are 4 simple exams, with no final exam. Be prepared to occasionally hear about Casper's life outside of art; from trips to Italy to updates on football.
The BEST art history class and professor I have had so far, super interested, funny, kind, friendly in a genuine way. Won't make the history thing seems tedious. And the class is fairly easy comparing to other same-level classes.
Great prof. who knows his stuff. Willing to help, and funny to boot. Easy exams that are cake to ace if you study even a smidgen.
Andrew Casper is an amazing teacher and was the perfect way to start my freshman year. He's easygoing enough and if you participate, he'll work around any needs you may need. He remembers students who participate and appreciates them.
a good and interesting lecturer. makes what some can see as a boring topic fun and enjoyable. always do the reading and go to class even though its not mandatory, you get a pop quiz once a week. missing points on them, can really sink your grade. overall a solid professor.
Casper is an all around solid teacher and his lectures are very interesting. Only grades are pop quizzes, papers, and exams, so it's VERY easy for grade to slip. I dropped the class simply because I needed an easy Miami plan and THIS IS NOT IT. If you're an art major or can settle for a B, take the class. Very cool teacher but easily gets off topic talking about wife, kids, football, ect.
Casper was one of my favorite professors at Miami, He has a high energy that is contagious. He makes learning the History of Art fun. I never skip his class due to the fact that he has in-class assignments and pop quizzes. Even though his class is hard, It was worth it.
I found that this professor got very distracted during class and we would often spend a large portion of valuable class time discussing things unrelated to class topics. I found this distracting and it devalued my learning experience.
Dr. Casper is a great professor overall. Going into the class (Art History), I was sure that it would be my least favorite, but his obvious passion for art and contagious energy really helps. A lot of your grade is based on in-class assignments and quizzes, but if you do the readings and pay basic attention they are simple. Tests are easy as well
It is easy to do very well in this class. Dr. Casper chooses to teach this class every year, and you can tell he enjoys working with freshman. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone that simply wants a fine arts credit; it's not worth the headache of sitting through lecture.
has quizzes weekly so you have to do the homework. takes art seriously
Dr. Casper is so interested in art history and always makes lectures enjoyable! I found this course pretty difficult, but if you work hard and do the homework you should have no problem getting a good grade.
Dr. Casper is awesome. In no way am I interested in art history, but Dr. Casper made this class a very good experience for me. I would recommend anyone trying to get an art credit for Miami Plan to take this course. You won't regret it. Very funny and enthusiastic about his research and art history in general. Very fair grader.
Go to every class, take notes. Do the homework every week. Study for the exams with powerpoints (work of art on one slide and title on the next) & make sure you memorize every piece. It's not as hard as it sounds, & you might be surprised by how much you like the class. His lectures are actually interesting
Casper is awesome! Like many previous reviewers, I'm not into art at all, but he makes the class way more enjoyable than I ever expected it to be. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but quizzes are random and can't be made up so you kind of have to go to class. I never dread it though because Casper is so upbeat and engaging. Take him!!!
Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had, really loves the subject he's teaching and always tries to interact with his students. He randomly assigns pop quizzes and in class assignments but they're easy points if you've done your homework. Highly highly recommend.
Casper is a genuinely great guy, and the passion he clearly has for his work is contagious. At first, I was somewhat intimidated by the format of the class (random pop quizzes and in-class assignments) but really as long as you do the homework and go to class, you'll be fine. Exams and essays are also pretty simple. Would def recommend this class!
made art history incredibly interesting, I considered changing my major. makes you want to go to his class and contribute. learns almost everyone's name in a 300 person lecture hall
Very enthusiastic about art, makes the class fun because he is upbeat and funny and gets the class to participate. There are weekly quizzes and 2-page essays to make sure you do the homework but compared to most college classes it's extremely doable, three tests throughout the semester that were all easy if you pay attention in class and do the hw
Dr. Casper is a fantastic teacher. I am by no means an ART major but he made the classes really interesting. It was nice that we didn't use a textbook, unlike every other art 188 class. Homework is manageable and as long as you listen in class you should do well.
Dr. Casper is nice and funny, but for a humanities class this class was a lot of work. Lectures are fun but mandatory due to pop quizzes every week. However I did learn a lot and if you need a creative arts credit I recommend his class.
I really enjoyed taking Dr. Casper's class, I'm actually taking another one next semester. I'm not a huge European art history fan, but I still really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. His seminar discussions and short papers are helpful but they can be difficult for those who aren't super familiar with art history.
Hands down one of the best teachers I've had at Miami University. You can tell how passionate he is about the material he's teaching. I was dreading taking an art course and he made the material enjoyable and interesting. He really cares about his students and brings a very positive energy to the classroom.
Dr. Casper is very passionate about what he teaches and therefore is a great professor. This course is really cool, but it has lots of homework and a group project.
Dr. Casper is a fantastic professor and you can tell that he loves what he teaches and really cares about his students. His lectures are engaging and I always found them to be very interesting. I would recommend everyone to take a class with him even if it's not ART188.
Casper was my favorite part of this semester. Not only was ART188 the best organized of all my online courses, but I genuinely enjoyed what I thought would just be a Miami plan requirement. There is a decent amount of reading/1-point analyses due each class as well as a few papers, but it was very manageable. I recommend him to everyone.
Good class, you can tell he's really into what he's teaching. There are weekly analyses due on Canvas that are pass/fail, as well as essays due every week or so. The essays are on a 5 point scale, which is super frustrating. You write a good paper, get a 4, your grade's brought down pretty significantly since they're 25% of your grade.
Dr. Casper has been my favorite professor at Miami so far. He really cares about the students and is so passionate about art history which makes the class really enjoyable. The course content is super interesting and the assignments are pretty straightforward. Definitely take a course with Dr. Casper if you have the chance.
Dr. Casper gives interesting lectures and assigns fascinating readings, but he lacks people skills. I would not go to him if I were looking for a mentor.
Dr. Casper is a great professor. He understands that most students are there for the credit but still makes the material easy to comprehend. There is no textbook. You have to go lectures, he doesnt post slides and only really shows the artwork on the slide. Can go off topic but knows his material. Makes an effort to know names. Do HW early.
Dr. Casper was one of the best instructors I've ever had! He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the content, and is ALWAYS willing to meet with you outside of class to answer questions. He can get a little distracted during lectures, but he is very engaging and obviously cares about all of his students. Highly recommend!!
you need a course pack but its pretty cheap so no big book costs. class is fun and engaging even if u dont like art. attendance isnt mandatory and he has little hw assignments that count for attendance. two papers throughout the semester and his exams are online and open note. easy class and amazing professor.
I'm not an art history major, but this was one of my most entertaining and interesting classes this semester by far. Dr. Casper is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about what he's teaching, and the discussions we had as a class were all not only thought-provoking, but funny as well. I'd 110% recommend taking ART 188 if you have the chance.
Casper is nice and passionate. He does little to make the class engaging. Gets up there at favors those that love the subject and can offer their "expert" feedback. For a Miami plan class and as an FSB major, it would be nice if there was some more general engagement versus just flying through art eras each week. Incredibly hard to be engaged.
LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE Dr. Casper. He is easily my favorite professor I've had. I am not interested in art or art history whatsoever, but he is so passionate about his work and his job it makes it enjoyable. I just took this as a Miami plan class and it has been amazing. Only have to write a few short papers and an occasional discussion for the class.
Dr. Casper is a very caring, understanding person. His knowledge of the subject material is immense. Taking this class has given me a newfound appreciation for ancient art. Most importantly Dr. Casper is an amazing teacher and makes learning engaging for his students.
I'll look back at college with this class being on of my biggest regrets. I was reoccupied with other things during the semester I took Dr. Casper, and didn't put in great effort. 187 is a breeze, but Dr. Casper makes it truly enjoyable. His lectures are very entertaining and finds ways to incorporate the whole class, even if it's a large lecture.
Dr. Casper is one of the best teachers I have had so far. He is a great person and truly does care about Art History. I came into the class thinking I would hate it, but left kind of interested. There are about 6 papers and there is a good amount of homework for a miami plan. The exams are extremely easy though.
Love him as a teacher but the pop quizzes and the elaborate papers are unnecessary, would def pick an easy art 188 teacher over this guy, but if you're interested in art I would def recommend. exams are pretty tough unless you grind class and the readings
Dr. Casper was an incredibly caring person who is knowledgable about the course material. His enthusiasm for art is clear, and it's inspiring to people who have never taken an art class before. The course load is manageable and the tests are open note. I would definitely recommend taking this professor because he is truly an incredible person.
Dr. Casper is the GOAT! Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are always fun and you can tell that he is really passionate about what he teaches. Attendance is mandatory but class participation isn't required; there are occasional pop quizzes and papers but if you do the homework they really aren't bad at all. 10/10!
Incredibly kind and entertaining. Kinda sounds like Matpat.
Dr. Casper started every class by asking the class to think about something that was giving us joy. He truly cares about each and every one of his students and his passion for art history shines through. Very engaging lecturer, even when the material wasn't super interesting to me.
Dr Casper truly cares about his students. He's a great professor but there are quizzes all the time. He puts a painting up and you have to put in a 75 word response. We Ould have about 20 of these throughout the semester and 3 tests. Plus 3 museum analysis those were kinda long but not hard to write.
Fun and intriguing class to take if you need an art credit for the Miami Plan. Homework does get a bit annoying, every day studying paintings to have a general knowledge of them incase he gives you an in class analysis, which he often did. But make a quizlet with the paintings and basic knowledge and you will get an A on every test. Easy A imo.
This man is singlehandedly the reason why I will continue my education at Miami. His love for not only his work but for every single student that sits in his class is actually nothing less than admirable. You're given a reading to finish before the next lecture but honestly, the work isn't time consuming or hard. Be interactive and go to class!
Really good at communicating to students the criteria for the class.
