Easy class...all you have to do is print out the slides and memorize them completely to get a good grade on tests...lectures are pretty boring he just reads off the slides but it's tolerable overall
i do bad because I don't go to class (never gone on a friday yet) and still dont have a book. It's april. easy class, if you try even a little bit. hard for me.
He is a great guy, great teacher. We just sit in class listening to jazz half the time. Keep up with listening samples, but tests based on notes. He is also understanding as well, and can play a mean sax.
fairly hard class. no easy A... good teacher but boring material. tests are fairly hard too but study and take extra notes on lectures and you'll do fine. More tedious than fun.
ok, no u dont have to go to class except to get the password for online quizzes, password handed out on fridays, ....easy class, dont take extra notes, dont even bring notes, easy class
Quizes are online and you can take them as many times as you want until you get the answers right. You dont have to go to class ever if you put in some good study time before the tests and go to the review session right before the tests.Powerpoints online
I thought this class would be a walk in the park, and it basically is, but there is a lot of info that you need to know for the tests. He tests you on the information aswell as listening samples. Online quizzes are easy, and hes a pretty nice guy.
First half of semester is boring, but gets better. Quizzes are easy except for getting the password. No reason to attend class. Before every exam there is a review.
This is the best GenEd!! My fav class b/c it's no big deal to skip -- everything is online, even the quizzes that you get to retake as many times as you want. There's a concert attendance requirement (3) but you only have to turn in the program, not write a review like other music classes.
I have been to class 3 times this semester. Test grades could be higher ... but we are working on that. Take this class.
great class, great teacher, really easy. just need to study for 3 exams. no no need to go to class.
Easiest class in the world!!!!!You can take online quizes as many times as you want until time is up. No homework. Go to class cause thats when the passwords are giving. Easy exams. I got a 101 on the last one:)
Pretty easy but kinda boring. Nice man. Tests on powerpoint slides but quizzes on book readings. Tests are ok, quizzes are easy but sometimes frustrating. Go to class.
Pretty easy class. Quizes are online and you can take them as many times as you want to get 100, have to go to 3 music concerts, there are 3 tests all multiple choice, and the final isnt cumulative. Id definily recomend him, hes a nice guy and there is no attendance policy.
Easy ass class. Online, unlimited attempt quizes. 3 tests, no final, just 3rd test. Lecture notes before class, no attendance. 3 concert proofs but no review paper or anything, just a signed stub so you can see how easy it is to pass off that. Nice guy too, pretty laid back.
Boring. Pretty easy. Study hard for tests. Great online quizzes with extra credit.
interesting class, a shame that it is taught in a stadium. online quizes are easy, but the tests can catch you off guard. fairly good curriculum, misses some biggies though: allmans, the dead, phish, srv, kottke. overall nice class though, dont go if you dont want to
VERY EASY CLASS, don't have to go if you don't want to, easy online quizes which you can take as many times as you want, tests involve only an hour or so of last minute studying right off the study guide, overall easy A
Awesome class go day before tests and thats all you need.
Class is interesting, good for listening to music, covers a lot of stuff, but class is easy. You can take the quizes until you get 100, but the tests are not that easy, requires some reading and effort.
Def take this for gened cluster. Easy tests, no attendance policy, quizzes online you can retake, and you just have to hand in a concert program, no writing about it. Pretty chill class
Don't listen to these people! Stay away, stay far away. I slept through EVERY class because I was so bored. Then when test time came, I didn't have the notes. At least bring some coffee, it's that bad.
No attendence policy, take quizzes online until you get a 100. Tests are ok as long as you read a little but gives study guides. Take it with a friend you will laugh at the music examples! The class is huge so he won't know if you were there. Just get concert tickets (no papers with that!) TAKE HIM
Easiest A ever and you learn something. While you learn about classical music and jazz it is balenced out with good blues and rock and rap near the end.
Easiest class at JMU. No attendance. Take online quizes as many times as you want. No need to go to class except for exam reviews where he gives you whats on the exam. Ton of extra credit. A poorly trained monkey could get an A in this class.
This is by far one of the easiest classes at JMU. Take it for your music gened class. No attendance policy, you can take the quizzes as many times as you want until you get 100, just go to the class before the test, he tells you all the answers, and then you will get A's on the tests. TAKE IT.
Basically what everyone else has said. Take this class! Dr. Connell is an awesome professor and this class is both easy and interesting. I ended up with a 99.5% final grade. Again, take this gen ed! You won't regret it.
Incredibly easy. It's a huge class so the lectures are straight from the powerpoint slides which makes it kinda boring. But definitely take it. It's an easy A!
Really interesting lectures. I like music a lot and loved the class. I got over a 100. Not everyone did that well, but you would have to be really lazy or really stupid to not get atleast a B.
Wow, I'm not interested in music at all, but this is an easy class. I never went and still got an A. Just do the quizzes and come to all the review sessions. If you like music take this class, you'll enjoy. If not, take it anyways cuz it's an easy gened to fill the cluster.
Take this class. No attendance. Just come the day before the test and he completes the study guide. Easy A
if you go to class the last day before a test and finish the study guide, it's a very easy A. The only other thing is that you need to at least have friends who will tell you the quiz passwords that are announced in class.
Yeah he actually isn't a good teacher and his tests are hard. He expects everyone in there to be a music major...not so my friends...
Everyone should take this class, it's so ridiculously easy. There's no attendance policy and he structures the class so you can show up on the review days and still get an A on the tests. Quizzes are online and you can take them as many times as you want. This class is an EXTREMELY easy A.
Class is pretty easy. Quizes are online and you get to take them as many times as necessary. No final, just three mildly-easy tests. Lots of extra credit. Class itself can put you to sleep, but towards the end it gets more interesting. Touches upon Miles Davis, Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Nirvana, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder, Motown etc
the class is easy, but he is VERY boring and you won't want to be there. He doesn't listen to students and is a pain to deal with. He graded our 12-15 page research papers in a day, so he definitely did not read them at all, and he is just a pain to deal with. DON'T take him. I got an A in the class, but he's just not worth the hassle.
very easy class. doesn't take attendance and it is pretty much pointless to even go since he posts his powerpoints. quizes can be taken until you get a 100 and concert attendance requirements are very minimal too. take him, you'll get an A
easiest class jmu has to offer. seriously, everyone should take it. whoever says this guy's tests are hard is a complete and utter dumbass. if you can't get an a in this class, there's no hope for you at all, you might as well drop out of school because you will never ever EVER get a gpa-booster like this again.
He's really passionate about jazz, and it makes the class really interesting. Lots of videos and listening, and he loves to share his tidbits and facts about musicians. A great course for music lovers.
If you need a gpa booster this is the class to take. There are online quizzes every couple weeks, but you can take them as many times as you want until you get a 100. Tests are also pretty easy; go over the listening examples and slides from class a couple times. The lectures are a bit boring, but get a little more intersting towards the end.
Connell is the bomb! I absolutely loved this class! Easy weekly quizzes, easy tests, and you have to turn in 3 concert proofs (just go to the concert, get a program, and leave...lol). I used to jam in his class when he played Motown hits and Grandmaster Flash (watch him cuz he likes to jam too!) Definitely take this class: no if's, and's, or but's!
wonderful class-this guy knows his stuff. class is pretty boring on occasion, it has its moments. usually goes over the entire study guide before exams-no attendence policy, but going to class, you won't suffer a ton.
This guy is a really nice and a good teacher and does his best to make the boring**** we have to learn interesting. Study your ass off for the tests though, and not just the night before because you have to memorized about 75 musicians names. but overall its a good class, if you dont slack off you can make an A
Good teacher, made sure that students had decent review before tests, make sure you pay attention to the listening samples
Easy. Online quizzes boost grades. Attendance not at all required. I've been 4 times and I have an easy B, soon to be an A. Definite GPA booster. Study for tests.
great teacher, easiest class I have ever taken. Barely studied for the first test and got a 100. Next test, did'nt study and got a 95. yea, enough said.
Showed up on Exam days, I have an A-. Online quizzes are hard but can be taken as many times as you want so you'll get a 100. Exams require some studying but not too much.
easiest class you will ever take at jmu, period. you can tell he loves what he teaches, and thats largely what makes this class so good. ive heard some horror stories about the other GMUS classes, take this guy and you'll have no problems at all. easy easy easy!
Very easy class. Great to take if you have an interest in music. You can tell her really enjoys what he does.
easiest class in the world, but BORING AS HELL. he's kind of an *** but it's easy so you get over it. only use the book for quizzes, study guide for tests. easy A, no attendance necessary, thank god.
This class is so pointless, but take it for the gened requirement. You don't need to go to class, because it wont make a difference in your ability to learn this pointless content anyways. He's a nice teacher but the class is so huge you won't get to know him, not like it really matters.
He's a nice guy. But...this class is really pointless and I think it's not easy to get a good grade because his tests are not easy. I learned Nothing from this class...
I went to the majority of the classes, did all the quizes, studied a little for the tests and i never missed a point. Great class.
Rarely go to class. Class is 300 points...there are open book quizes that are easy. You have to go to concerts which is easy but then comes the 3 tests. Not cumulative final, but the tests are so so so detailed. I have a 3.5GPA but I have an 80 going into the last test. Hard hard tests.
class was absolutly boring, never went, not necessary, online quizes open book. nice guy and willing to help if you go to him. tests are hard so you have to study the review sheet!!!!
took attendance. easy class but very boring.
pretty nice guy. material is kinda boring until the 3rd section which modern music. tests are A LOT of info, goes over study guide in class. open book quizzes online that you can retake. not bad for a gen ed
You are a complete idiot if you do not get above a B in this class! I only went to about half of the classes and I still got a 97% in the class! The class is so boring, but you don't have to go unless he is giving you the password for the online quizzes. If you want to take an easy GenEd take this class!!
You are a complete idiot if you don't get at least a B. DEF. GO TO CLASS!!! Attendance is not mandatory but the tests come directly from his lectures, not the book! You won't have to study that much if you actually pay attention to what he says... You can keep taking quizzes online till you get a 100, and you have to attend 3 concerts. TAKE HIM
Very nice man.. loves music. Easy gen ed compared to other music classes offered. go to class, all tests are from lecture slides. i was one point away from an A but that's cuz i missed many classes and was lazy.. easy A though if you just go to class!
awesome teacher, can be boring at times, but its a gened. But here's a guy who KNOWS its a gened, not one of those psycho teachers who tests you like its your major. Nice guy, loves music, always used to make fun of the kids who would only show up on test days.
He is great. Def take him for this gened. No attendance policy but go, it'll help a lot because all of the exams are from lecture (i didn't buy the book and have an A) All you need for concert proofs are the programs, so you don't have to stay for the actual concert.
It wasn't a bad class, I kind of got bored because he starts with native american music and ends with rock/rap. It gets better as it goes. Not a very hard class but it helps to show up. Don't buy the book you won't need it. The quizzes are online and you can take them as many times as you want.
Easy class with three tests (one is the non-cumulative final), easy online quizzes, some extra credit and three concert proofs (all you have to do is get the program! haha). He is a nice guy with an organized course... Take it!!
TAKE CONNELL'S CLASS!!!! Extremely easy. Textbooks only used for online quizzes, you can retake them as many times as you want. Tests are straight from powerpoint lectures. WAY too easy. Very, very interesting. FANTASTIC professor!!!!
This class is harder than many are saying. Class is sooo boring and another examply why GenEds are useless. You dont learn anything
Boorrrinnnggg lecture. Pay attention as best you can, take notes, and you probably still wont do well on the test. You have to be able to recognize and know the author/background of 28? songs. Was ridiculous. :)
The lectures are pretty boring. Dr Connell posts the PowerPoints on BlackBoard so you can take them to class and take notes on them. Online quizzes, the only reason you need the book. Study the PowerPoints for the tests and you'll do fine. I studied a little more than the average person and got an A.
Absolutely take this class. Barely showed up other than the review days and I have an A in the class. The days that I did show up, Connell was interesting and used videos and music example to break the monotony of typical lectures. You'll listen to Bob Dylan, Jimmi Hendrix, B.B. King, Michael Jackson and even NWA. Very cool.
Great guy, easy class, and somewhat interesting
Good class.
All gen ed music classes are going to be boring, so you might as well take this since it's EASY. Guaranteed A if you take notes, go to three concerts, and study for tests. Quizzes are online and can retake them until you get 100.You also get to listen to some cool stuff during the lectures.
Not hard at all, easy to get an A. The lectures are straightforward but you're not missing anything if you don't go. Easiest class of the semester, and I only showed up because of the hot T.A.
He keeps class interesting - pretty much tells you exactly what you need to know for tests and quizzes. Don't bother buying the book, but you WILL need the listening CD's - get them on Amazon for 5 bucks or so. He grades the one paper you have to write very hard, so be careful of that. Otherwise, a wonderful class.
the exams are based on his powerpoints and lectures. he provides a study guide before each exam and are able to ask questions about it. the exams have a listening section- make sure you know the songs. yes, it's a gened, but you'll have to review.
So boring. You can fail 2 of your 3 tests and if you do all the online quizzes you can still get a B
Class is not hard! Tests are easy (with extra credit), some online quizzes ( you don't even need the text book) and three concert attendances. Lecture is a bit dry and filled w/ tons of info you don't need to know for the test. Still highly recommended :)
Quite possibly the easiest A a GenEd can buy... tests come straight off a study guide, you can take his quizzes as many times as you want until you get a perfect score, and has powerpoints each week that goes over what he's going to teach that day. Go to class, otherwise you'll fall behind, but otherwise, just listen, and an A is in your grasp.
This class is easy but boring. The tests are straight from the powerpoint and he posts study guide for every lecture. You can retake the quizzes online as many times as you want, so that is helpful. Its easy to get an A, just suck it up and come to class!
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBACK!! Class is SUPER boring, I would recommend bringing a laptop to class. If you fill out the posted study guides or get them from someone who has taken the class, you will get either a high B+ or an A.
Oh my... where do I begin? The easiest GPA booster JMU offers (get the textbook it'll help you on the 100th try you take his online quizzes) *hint hint*. Just read off his PPT's, don't even need to take notes (barely). Tests are easy, concert proofs piece of cake. But GO TO CLASS... you'll realize how far behind you are after only missing ONE.
Did not pay any attention in class and still managed to get a pretty easy A. I'm sure if I actually did pay attention, this woulda been the easiest A. He is extremely knowledgeable. He gives you a study guide before each testwhich is pretty helpful. Three tests, last test is the final. Listening parts of the test and 5 extracredit questions on each
pretty easy class, but don't just blow it off, actually go to class. can take online quizzes as many times as you want. don't need the textbook.
easy class, no attendance policy. he puts the lectures up on blackboard and lets you take online quizzes as many times as you want open book. 3 exams, 65 points each. you also have to go to 3 concerts which are $4 each.
Just finished this class with a 98, and I didn't even go to class half the time. I'm not recommending that, but it is definitely an easy gen ed as long as you study the powerpoints before the tests. Definitely take this class, super nice guy too.
Fun guy! He definitely loves teaching and his material. Pretty easy gen ed, just try to go to class.. you don't really have to read the book. Can take the online quizzes as many times as you want to get a 100. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Connell's class is really pretty interesting. He really loves the music and teaches it well. Also, if you take notes in class you're looking at at least a B- for the class. Definitely an easy class. I barely did anything except study for the mid term and final and got a B. Definitely take this class!
Got an A in the class and NEVER went. Do the online quizzes until you get a 100. Go to the 3 mandatory concerts and study the powerpoints before the tests and there's no reason why you should get below a B+. Also, don't buy the textbook.
This class is so easy! I didn't even go to class and I got an A. All you have to do is study his study guides for the three exams he gives... they are really easy (he wants you to do well). Also he gives about seven quizzes online that you can take till you get 100. Nice guy too.
This class is hard to be interested in but Dr. Connell tries his best to make it fun. Definitely an easy class though. You can take the online quizzes as many times as you want. Not my favorite class, but definitely not an awful class to be in.
Generic GenEd class with a generic teacher. Somewhat funny, nothing too special. Online quizzes are easy if you have the text book but the tests are pretty hard.
Most boring class ever! You have to go to class to get quiz passwords and all he ever does is make you listen to music. Quizzes are easy but worth nothing. Tests are impossible with a hard listening section and the study guide is so much materials. I don't know why everyone thinks this class was easy?
Connell is so nice! He is very willing to help you if you are unclear on anything. Tests are not bad at all but you do need to put in time to study. Go to class and an A or B is easily attainable
Take this class. You'll get an A.
I really enjoyed this class for the must part. Grades included two listening quizzes, a paper, midterm, and final. Really picky grader on the paper but if you go to his office hours he's very helpful and if you don't do well the first time he let you rewrite it. Essays on test were hard because he was picky about details.
Dr. Connell is a really nice guy. Lectures are extremely boring, especially in the beginning of the semester, but they do get better. The tests aren't bad as long as you go to class and study. I would recommend this class if you're looking for an easy gen ed.
This class was not as easy as its said to be. Quizzes are take home but take a very long time. Tests are very hard even if you go to class because he goes over so much material. Is very strict with his grading with very little extra credit. Overall not a bad class but only if you are good with music and know a lot of history about it.
Connell is slightly boring but the class is really easy. There is a lot of extra credit and the tests are really easy. The quizes he gives are over the weekend and you can take them as many times as you want. The class is an Easy A.
This is an easy A. Some parts of the class are not so interesting as others, but it's manageable. Can retake quizzes until you get 100, plenty extra credit, and exams are easy if you do the study guide he gives you.
Any prior knowledge about music and history is extremely helpful. The tests are very difficult but you can take the quizzes as many times as you need. The lectures start out boring but do get better.
Great professor! Class is not mandatory, but it's really helpful to go. The quizzes are online and come more from the book than his lectures, but you can take them as many times as you want. The tests are easy as long as you go to class & study!
The tests are very easy. He gives you five extra credit questions, all MC, and a lot of the questions come straight from the notes. I got a 103% in is class but the people who got B's were ones who didn't come to class, and when they did they didn't take notes. Highly recommend him for a gened.
This was a very interesting class, and he is good at lecturing. The online quizzes are from the novel textbook and can be time consuming, but overall the material is easy, and he goes over a lot of it before the test. 3 fairly easy tests, a bunch of online open-everything quizzes, and 3 concert attendances that require no extra work.
I love music, so this class flew by for me. Take him, it will be the best decision out of any other gen eds. I have an A. He never take attendance so just go to go get online quiz passwords. His online quizzes he has you take every 2 weeks are so easy, just keep redoing them till you get 100% & use google.
Connell is the chillest. He's got a good attitude, gives ample opportunity for extra credit on and outside of tests. The lectures are interesting enough, and as long as you go to class from time to time and study a bit before the tests, you'll do fine. Awesome professor.
Look- don't buy the textbook, and don't go to class. I did both and would've gotten the same grade without doing either. Just study a LOT for the exams because there is sooo much info to memorize. On second thought, go to class because the info may sink in better. A background in music is helpful. Andrew is a nice guy.
Mr. Connell teaches the class in a slow pace and dragging manner. The classes are very long and you sit there listening to music all class. The music is very old and hard to differ from another. The tests are very long and requires a lot of studying the night before. A lot of musical experience is required I'd say. I would choose another gen ed.
This was a class I literally dreaded going to. He's so boring and doesn't do any class participation. The quizzes are absolutely nothing you learned and the tests are hard because the music is hard to differentiate between. I would HIGHLY suggest not taking this class.
I honestly believe Dr. Connell should have a 5.0. The class is so easy and he's very clear. You don't need the book at all..I never opened it. You can use Google for the online quizzes, and use your class notes to study for the tests. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class, that's when you'd fail this class. Highly recommend it.
Dr. Connell is hands down one of the best professors/ teachers I have ever had in my entire life. Take GMUS 203 with him PLEASE, it's honestly the best class you'll take. He makes it so interesting and makes coming to class fun. Shows lots of videos to go along with the material. He's honestly the best professor out there, pleeease take him.
It is an easy class. I just didn't study enough for the final which brought my grade down to an A-. Just do what you need to do. You should be fine.
Class is easy if you pay attention and take notes. Tests are off of the class lectures, nothing from the textbook. If you make a friend in class, both of you could easily only go once a week(opposite days), swap notes, and get A's.
Very easy class. Textbook only for quizzes that are tedious but you have unlimited attempts. I got a 102 in the class so yeah not hard at all. Take it for a music gen ed for sure.
I like music and music history so I enjoyed the class a lot. If you don't know anything about music, you probably will not enjoy the class. Dr. Connell is a great professor and has a great passion for music. Go to class and take notes on his posted outlines (not attendance policy though). Quizzes every week or so, tests are multiple choice.
Easiest Gen Ed EVER. Attendance is not mandatory, posts outlines online, tests are easy, and quizzes are all online and you get multiple attempts. He is obviously very enthusiastic about the subject. If you're looking for an easy ten ed that's interesting too, take this class!
TAKE THIS CLASS FOR YOU GEN. ED. it is seriously the best gen. ed. I've ever taken. Dr. Connell makes the information fun with movies and interesting anecdotes! NOT MANDATORY ATTENDANCE- but i would get a friend to get the notes for you. The answers to the quizes are easily found on the net and i never touched the book! The tests are easy!
This class was awesome and the material was interesting. Definitely recommend for a gened. Use the study guides for exams and you'll be just fine!
I dreaded going to this class. I thought he was mean especially to our Technical Assistant. I would recommend taking the class because out of the GenEd musics this is the easiest but take a different professor if you can. I just overall thought the class was hard, and the professor didn't make it any better.
Clearly knows his stuff but his power points aren't detailed which leaves you clamoring to find 100 definitions a week before one of the 2 exams. The cultures he chooses are way too similar and expects you to be able to hear the difference between three drums that sound the same. There is just too much I don't like about him to fit in 350 letters.
Connell was as engaging as he could be with the subject and used music samples to make the class fun and interesting. Tests aren't terrible and not cumulative. Easy A as long as you put in a day of studying before each test.
Thinking about going to this class makes me ill. BORING AND UNCLEAR. Dr. Connell is so mean to the technical assistant. Tests are okay, you have to study a lot. Easy A, but not worth my time.
GMUS203 is a very boring class but it's an easy A. The quizzes are all online, openbook, and you get multiple attempts. The only time I used the textbook was for the quizzes. You don't have to read it because the exams are based only on the lectures. The exams require a lot of studying and you actually have to attend lectures to understand.
WORST teacher ever. He is so incredibly rude and makes the class hard for no reason. Quizzes are open book (the only time you'll use the textbook) and online, you get three attempts. Tests are hard and make sure you know the listening examples. Try to avoid this class if you can.
This was the most boring class I have ever taken and will ever take. He mumbles, the music isn't even that good, and he's so mean to his poor TA! The class is so easy but the material was so boring. Honestly, don't even bother going to class. Didn't learn one thing.
Lectures are borderline boring, but what do you expect in an auditorium classroom? The only reason I didn't receive an A is because I missed a concert event and an online quiz. If you go to class, take notes, study the day before exams, and attend the concerts, it is an easy A.
He is a really nice guy but his lectures get realllyyy boring. You don't HAVE to go to class, but most of your info comes from what he says about the ppts. Not all the info is on the ppts so you have to listen. I suggest downloading the ppts and taking notes on them. quiz answers should be on quizlet, otherwise look up keyword in index of book.
This class is a really easy gen-ed. I've gotten an A on the past two tests and I maybe studied an hour. There's no attendance policy but I would go to class because a lot of his questions come from the lectures. He plays a lot of videos and songs which make the class more interesting. I would definitely recommend him.
This class was a pretty easy class. The quizzes are open book, however they are timed. You also get three tries on each quiz which is nice. The only time you use the information from reading is on the quizzes, so I didn't read. The tests can be hard. But just read through your notes a few times and make sure to listen to the music!
A great class overall!! MUST TAKE FOR GEN ED. Can be a little boring in class, but the quizzes are 3 attempts online and the tests are fairly easy as long as you do the study guides he gives you. Also concert attendance is much better than other gmus classes. ANDY CONNELL 4 PREZ
Online open book quizzes and tests are easy if you do the study guide and study it well. Class can be dull but listening examples are interesting, he obviously likes what he is teaching. This is an easy choice for a gen ed requirement, I would recommend him.
must go to class to take notes (notes are not online). it's sometimes hard to understand him during the lectures, but he gives study guides for the exams.
Great choice for a gen ed. online open note quizzes are the only time you use the book so I just googled the answers and didn't buy it. 3 tests, no cumulative final (just a 3rd unit test). easy exams but you have to go class to get the lecture notes. easy A, please take this class if you're looking for an simple gen ed option.
Andy was a very good professor for History of Jazz. He clearly has a passion for jazz and that makes learning about it easier, especially if you go into the class knowing nothing (like I did). There's a fair amount of reading, but it's pretty interesting stuff. There's also a lot of listening to jazz, especially during class, which was cool.
This class was super fun! Though some of the music could be dull and boring, there were some songs I recognized and really enjoyed. Attendance is crucial since all the notes come straight from lecture, which his tests are based off of. The online quizzes come from the book and the password is given out during lecture. I would definitely recommend.
This class was ok. Online open note quizzes and concert proof attendance are easy 100s but the tests are tough. 3 tests, no final, just your last test all 65 question multiple choice. Notes are not online you MUST go to class. Long notes and specific test questions from them, study up!
Connell is a cool guy, super passionate and knows what he is talking about. The class is easy, just show up and take notes. I didn't buy the textbook and got an A. online quizzes and 2 concert attendances but all easy to do. 3 exams, straight from the notes.
I would highly recommend this class for a gen ed. Not demanding at all. I could have easily gotten an A if I just tried even a little bit but I didn't so I'll probably get a B. # tries for the online quizzes but they're pretty easy if just open up the book and find them. But you HAVE to go to class to get the notes, and the tests are based on them.
This class was extremely easy. The lectures are kind of boring so a lot of people skip, but I would advise going to class. If you go to class, it is a really easy A. The grade is mostly online quizzes (you get 5 attempts), 3 tests which are not cumulative, and concert attendance. One of the easiest classes at JMU.
So passionate! Dr. Connell knows so much about what he's teaching, and he uses lots of videos and songs to reinforce his lectures. He does a Q&A before every test, and the tests are so easy! As long as you go to class, you'll get at least a high B every test (which are based on lectures). Easy online quizzes with 3 attempts. Loved this class!
Dr. Connell is a decent teacher. His class is pretty easy, gives some extra credit. However his lectures are kind of long and boring. He speaks very fast and to get an A on the test you should take note of everything he says in class, which at times is difficult. Show up to class to take notes, tests are a bunch of random junk facts from class.
You do absolutely no work for this class until tests come. As long as you go to class and take notes, tests are not bad at all. Lectures can get boring but not terrible. Basically like a history class about American music. Did very little work and got an A. Good class to take if you have a heavy work load from other classes during a semester.
I thought Connells class got more interesting towards the end with modern day music but that's just me. His tests are difficult so utilize the study guides and the book. The listening portions of the exams are tough too so study those. The online quizzes and concert attendances are easy 100s so don't mess those up. Good gen ed overall!
Connell is awesome, gives three non cumulative exams, online quizzes, and proof of music events. Study guides can be intimidating but make a quizlet and study and you will do well in this class, plus there is modern music in there so it can be interesting too.
He provides lecture supplements that make it very easy to follow important information in the lecture. His exams are a bit long however provides a great review.
There are 3 tests, a lot of easy online quizzes, and 3 concert attendances. That is what your grade is based on. I got 100% for the online quizzes and concert attendances. The tests are difficult if you don't study for at least 2 days in advance. The lectures can be kind of boring at times. Overall, I would take this class again.
Basis of the grade was 3 tests, which require a little bit of studying, open book online quizzes with multiple attempts, and 3 concert attendances. Overall, class was easy and lectures are easy to follow. As long as you can attempt to attend the non-mandatory lectures, you should pass the class easy.
I hated this class with a passion. You need to know every single detail in his lectures AND read the chapters to pass the exams. Theres listening portions of the exam and those are super tough too. Need to attend 3 JMU concerts for grade. Teaches way too fast. Don't take him!!!
He's a good guy and he is very passionate about music, but his tests are very hard. His lectures are long and boring, and his tests cover a lot of material. It's not hard to get a good grade in his class, but you do have to study a lot before tests. He requires his students to attend 3 concerts. The course load was not bad, just hard tests.
3 tests (including the final, which is not cumulative), 3 concert attendances, and a few quizzes. All tests have extra credit and quizzes sometimes do as well. He's funny and knows music. As long as you go to class more than occasionally, do the readings, and fill out the lecture outlines/study guides, you'll do fine.
such and easy class 3 tests not comprehensive online quizzes! he's super cool and the music gets interesting towards the end
Best teacher I had my first semester, he's pretty funny and really cares about what he teaches. Tests can be very hard if you don't study. Concert attendance required but it honestly isn't that bad.
Dr. Connell's class was my favorite class last semester. It is in no way difficult to get an A in his class. As long as you actually go to class, take notes from his lectures, and make sure to study for 30 minutes before each test, you will get an A in this class. I highly recommend taking this class, and I would gladly take it again.
I loved this class and Dr. Connell. He is really passionate about music and its history, so his lectures were very animated and interesting (but can be very long). The tests are easy, just spend an hour listening to the music samples and reading over your notes and you'll do fine. He gives extra credit with every test.
If you come to class and do the extra credit this is a really easy class. But you do need to study, and you do need to come to class. If you come to all the classes and study a little bit this is an easy A. Pretty interesting too
I found class dry & boring a lot of the time, but it's pretty easy to do well. Connell can be funny when he wants to be. Get the notes by going to class or from a friend, study your notes before the test, and go to the 3 concerts required. there are also several online quizzes but you have 3 tries and you're given more than enough time.
I have loved this class and Professor Connell. He is so funny and jams out to most of the music he plays. He gives quizzes but they are on Canvas and are open note. He is very lenient about due dates and just loves what he does.
Prof. Connell is a pretty easy going class and the class is an easy A. Only 3 exams and he gives extra credit for all of them. He's a little quirky but he is passionate about his topic and I enjoyed the class.
I didn't find Connell as easy as everyone said he was. He's a good guy and it's not too bad of a class but tests require a lot of studying in order to do well on them. No homework but quizzes are online and take time to dig up the answers. It wasn't too hard but wasn't too easy.
Much harder than I though. 13 pages study guide for each test, If you want a lot of work sign up, if not don't do it.
Connell is the man. Some of the music was boring but towards the end it gets really interesting and you start to know a lot of the music he plays. The quizzes are easy with the textbook open and the tests aren't bad at all
Connell is amazing, take him! He is so passionate about music and seems to really care for his students. Only three tests and no homework: Tests are a breeze if you just cram the night before. There is something very admirable about him that makes sitting through the lectures a little less torturous. Easy A if you can memorize!
This class is what you make it, as a STEM focused individual this class was hell. 90% of the music you have either never heard or couldn't care less about. No attendance but forces students to come to class to get the quiz passwords (announced). Quizzes are a joke. Never went to class, used Quizlet to study. 3 Required music concert attendances.
You definitely want to be interested in a class like this, where many of the pieces you will study are far from what you know, however Connell is an amazing professor who is really passionate about the music he teaches, and helps to explain it in the clearest way possible for you. You can get by without going to class, just prepared study for test.
Three tests, three easy EC assignments, some EC questions on every test. I skipped class all the time and didn't read the books, still ended with 102% in the class. The class was actually interesting though, I'm just lazy. Cool guy, makes lecture fun and interactive. Take Connell for 206!
Barely any work and classes are interesting usualy. Definitely recommend taking. Class is an easy A. 3 tests and a few quizes online.
He only has three tests and three outside assignments. Gives lots of EC on tests, some quizzes and some of the concert attendance. Pretty easy class but you do have to study for the tests or you won't do well. He is easy-going and you can tell he loves what he is teaching.
I really enjoyed Dr. Connell's class. He is very interested in what he is talking about and makes class more interesting. He doesn't take attendance, but you can miss a lot if you skip. If you study for the tests, you'll do fine. I definitely recommend him.
I found Dr. Connell a very funny man. He can be silly in class, and you'll be falling out of your seat laughing. He is a very easy-going music lover--and you can tell by his teaching. Be sure to show up to class and stay on top of the online quizzes, and you'll do exceedingly well.
His class was one of the easiest I've taken at JMU so far. If you are looking for an easy A music/art gen ed take this. The tests were very straightforward and based off of his lecture notes and listening examples. The online quizzes were easy and he also has grades for concert attendance. He is a nice guy who is very reasonable and straightforward
It's an easy class to get your GenEd art/music out of the way. A few online quiz but the answers are word for word from the textbook. The tests are pretty straight forward if you show up to his lectures. Easiest class ever and should get an A.
Honestly cool guy but the tests are so so hard. Online quizzes are easy but your grade is so heavily weighted on three exams that even if you study for it's so hard. Personally this class was too hard to be a MUSIC gen ed. Probably going to end up with a B in the class and that shouldn't be the case.
Professor Connell is a very good professor, he makes lecture interesting and fun with videos! Attendance isn't mandatory but the tests are all based on the lecture notes. If you go to class and just listen you will do well on the tests. Also I recommend going through the book and reading about the stuff on the study guide. Overall so fun!
I didn't use the textbook and got an A- in this class. I went to almost every lecture and took notes (he posts an outline for you to bring to class which is helpful). Posts study guides for each test. Overall easy class and nice professor. Quiz every other week, 3 concert attendances, 3 exams. Doesn't take attendance. Definitely take this class!
he is an amazing professor! online quizzes are easy with the textbook and you have 3 chances. Tests are difficult but all I did was study tons of quizlet's and got 90% on every test. You do have to study though. I stopped going to class unless the topic was interesting (rock and roll, r&b) Concert attendance is easy, just grab the program.
This class was super easy. The material can be super boring but it is very easy to get an A if you study for the tests and just take the quizzes which are super easy as well. you get 3 attempts on the quizzes but all the answers are either online or the text book. I would take this class for an easy gen-ed.
Easy GPA booster as long as you show up to class & take notes. As long as you pay attention in lecture, the reading isn't all that important (I stopped doing the reading after week 4). Quizzes are open note/book at home and study guides really help for the tests. Dr. Connell is really passionate about the material in this class and it shows.
Dr. Connell is super passionate about music and teaching it. Fill in the blank notes, open book online quizzes (super easy), tests tricky but not bad! Must go to every class to take notes. No need for the textbook.
Very easy class. Tests are hard but if you study youll do fine. print out his outlines before class and take notes on what he talks about not the slides dont waste your money on the textbook I never even opened mine. Very liberal but it doesnt really matter (some find it offputting). cool guy easy A if you show up take good notes and study
Easy GenEd class. Tests are made up of multiple choice and a listening portion. Tests are not hard if you study his study guide and quizlets made from it. He makes attendance mandatory to get passwords for online quizzes around every 2 weeks. Quizzes are super easy and straight from the book. You can get an A in this class without going.
this is the second time that i have taken his class and the music major section is super difficult. I have gotten a D both times in his class and it is too hard for a 200 level freshman class.
I hate this class! The tests are really hard. You have to know so many little details about old music and a bunch about the people in each chapter. This class is really boring to me. There are online quizzes each chapter which are really easy & you can look the answers up. They are 15 points each. And he doesn't let you have laptops out in class.
Prof. Connell is difficult but out of all of the other professors for this cluster, he's the best. You will have to study for the tests which are pretty hard but overall it wasn't that bad. He understands that no one in there is a music major and he tries to make the lectures as interesting as possible. Would recommend
Theres a LOT of vocabulary that you have to memorize in this class, but as long as you keep up with the material as he teaches it, you should do fine on the tests (which are all multiple choice). Not much work in this class apart from studying. I thought it was a boring class, but if you like learning about music history, you might enjoy it.
Dr. Connell knows what he is talking about. He plays lots of music clips and videos throughout lectures which I personally liked. You learn a LOT about music, so if you are generally interested in music, I would definitely take this course. The tests are straight from the lectures/study guide, and if you study the vocab, you should do fine.
I missed a good amount of class and still got an A in his class. Just remember to take the quizzes (you can get the code for them from your friends in class in case you skipped.) STUDY FOR THE TESTS. Do the study guides. If you do that, then you're set. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. SERIOUSLY. DON'T. waste of money. hardly uses it. super easy.
If you go to class and do the study guides you'll be fine. I studied the day before each test and got an A each time. Material is really interesting and a lot of the class is videos or listening examples. Only used the textbook for the quizzes every other week. He's a good guy and is really passionate about what he teaches. Good GPA booster.
Dr. Connells class is super easy as long as you do the guided notes and the open note quizzes when they are due. Tests are easy if you paid attention and do the study guides. Attendance is not mandatory however, you'll get to listen to some pretty fun music and Dr. Connell always makes them interesting.
You must go to class if you want to pass. If you go and take notes, the exams are super easy. While his lectures aren't interesting, they're not terrible. Recommend for an easy gen-ed.
Definitely recommend this guy! He is great at lectures and makes them very interesting. The tests are really easy and so are the online quizzes. It's an interesting class and if you are looking for an easy A take this class.
He makes his test extremely difficult and theres so much information on all of them. Such a hard class for a gen ed. DO NOT take.
lectures are kinda boring and attendance isn't taken but if you go the tests aren't horrible. Textbook isn't needed at all except for an occasional online quiz. Hes a pretty nice guy and the class isn't terrible
Dr. Connell was a great choice for MUS 203. He brings humor into his lectures in addition to giving the lecture. This is not a difficult class overall and he gives opportunities for you to get extra credit.
He knows what he is talking about and is passionate about the music. He is kinda boring but sometimes he would embarrass himself and dance to a couple of the songs. the textbook is only used for the quizzes and are open note. Before exams he posts a review and blocks off part of class to go over it and allows you to ask any questions you have.
Very Very Very boring. He talks to a bunch of kids like they care about music. No one cares. Most people play on phone in class. Just give us the review guide and book and thats all we need. We don't need to hear you ramble on in class about nothing. Oh and did I mention he was BORING!
Honestly the most boring class I have taken at JMU. Dude just stands at a podium and reads off his notes and then plays random songs that are so boring. Writes all of his test questions so good luck finding answers. If you want an easy elective take art 200
He was so interesting and made sure lectures kept your attention! This is an easier Gen-Ed, as long as you go, take notes and pay attention you'll do great! The exams are a lot of information but they're very straight forward.
Definitely take Dr. Connell! I took him for mus 203 as a gen ed and I loved the course, he is such a nice man and he is really passionate about what he teaches and its obvious he loves the subject. He is super nice and always available to help if you need him. I could say so many more nice things about him. He is a great guy and I recommend him!
Honestly just cheat in this class. There is so much useless info he gives you that no one cares about. His lectures are so boring and he doesn't teach besides reading his notes off right to you. Not hard to cheat because class is so big and everyone does it.
Connells class isnt all that bad. Dont need the textbook as his tests are primarily based on lectures. Tests can be tricky if you dont study, but your grade will be boosted by online quizzes (that you get multiple attempts on!), concert attendance, and extra credit. Pretty easy B but youll have to put in a good amount of effort to get an A.
Really nice guy and gives easy extra credit opportunities. Attendance isn't mandatory and his lectures are kind of dull but taking good notes in class really helps for the exams. The exams are long and tough if you don't study pretty hard but he has easy weekly quizzes and music concert attendances that can raise your grade.
Connell knows he's a Gen Ed and makes the class in a way to keep your attention. He is so knowledgeable about Music and it is actually interesting to hear him talk. Extra credit is on every test and the tests are open note. Definitely take this class to fill a cluster I promise you it's an easy A, with little effort required.
not a hard class. only a couple of tests and that's pretty much it.
Extremely knowledgeable in his field! You can tell Professor Connell has a passion for what he teaches. Grades are very test heavy, so be ready to put everything into them. There were "required" readings, but I soon found they were not very necessary, as he went over most of the information in his lectures. A solid choice! A decent amount of work.
Dr. Connell is a really good professor because he understands that most people are in this class to fulfill the gen ed requirement. We had a textbook but I never used it and I still did really well in the class! Definitely a good teacher for this class, minimal work and he makes it interesting. Also provides lot of opportunities for extra credit!!
MUS203 is an easy gen ed and Prof. Connell is a very caring teacher. However, there are easier gen eds to take for this cluster so I would recommend a different course.
All Dr. Connell cares about is his students learning something about music. This class was fun, low-stress, interesting, and easy. I read the textbook before every lecture and it helped a lot on exams, but you could probably get by without it (or with an older edition). Dr. Connell is very passionate about music and makes his lectures interesting.
This class is super easy if you take good notes during his lectures. Tests are based 100% on his lectures. Hes super passionate but the lectures do get a little boring sometimes. As long as you do your work you should get an A no problem. I would def recommend.
his tests are the most difficult part of the class but other than that it was pretty easy you just have to study and watch the lectures before the tests.
This class is not bad, the tests are pretty hard but if you pay attention and work hard you can do well in the class. There is a good amount of extra credit. It was a solid choice for a gen ed, he was a good professor and cares about you but get ready to work pretty hard.
Professor Connell is a great choice for MUS 203! His lectures are interesting and there is no outside work. He is a very fun professor and you can tell that he loves what he teaches. You get three chances to take the quizzes so it's easy to get a perfect score. He also gives extra credit and is a pretty easy grader.
This class is an easy A. Professor Connell has interesting lectures and you can tell he is passionate about music. the exams are based directly from his notes and he gives study guides out before each one.
He is a great professor he definitely understands its a gened and trys to make all of the material interesting. He has 4 tests one is the final which is optional. The lowest I got on any test was a 88, as long as you study for about an hour for the tests you got it. He also gives easy quizzes on the textbook which have 3 attempts.
DO NOT TAKE! Extremely boring and entirely too difficult for a gen-ed. There HAS to be a better class you can take to fulfill that requirement.
Very passionate about his field, but the subject matter is difficult.
He's definitely a nice guy but his tests are extremely hard. There are very few grades and the ones that count are impossible. Material is interesting but the tests are very specific and include info that isn't covered. He offers extra credit towards the end. If you can take him in person it's easy, I had him online and the whole class struggled
Prof. Connell is a very smart guy, and he knows a lot about writing. His lectures are packed with a lot of content, so you need to be ready to take notes. The only grades in this class are the test. If you do not do well on these, you will not succeed. If you take notes and study hard you should be fine.
Most boring teacher I have ever had. He is very nice, but there is so much material I barely retained anything. The tests are so hard even if you study for hours and there is barely any grades. There is definitely easier gen eds.
dont take this classs
I thought this class would be interesting because I love music, but every class I would l almost fall asleep. Tests are very specific and covers way too much material. The study guides after filled out were over 10 pages long as well as about 20 songs to memorize, who wrote them, and what era they are from. He does give EC so that was nice.
DO NOT TAKE!! EXAMS ARE INSANELY DIFFICULT AND THERE AREN'T MANY POINTS
Most boring lectures of my life. Anyways, you gotta attend his lectures to fill out lecture outlines, so be ready to take good notes. Listen to his listening examples the night before, and go over your lecture outlines and you should be fine. But again, this class is so boring and I dreaded going to it everyday, good luck :)
Virtual MUS203 was so easy, Connell is a really sweet guy. We had open note virtual quizzes with 5 attempts. The final exam was optional. He really really loves talking about music so classes were pretty interesting. Def recommend for a gened if he stays virtual. Tests were in-person but pretty easy
Dr. Connell was a great teacher for MUS203. He sends out weekly outlines for each section we're going through (literally use these for your notes and youre golden). Also, prepare to go online (actually made things better). Only downside about the 5 limit quizzes was that theyre textbook based. Advice: listen to the music every night before exams
Great choice for mus203 for gened. Do not buy textbook, tests are based on lectures. He gives out a study guide for tests and as long as you know those terms/topics youre good, very easy. I went to class like 5x and always got 90+ on exams. He also gives out SO much extra credit and although his lectures are extremely boring he is a super nice guy.
Professor Connell was really nice and is very passionate about the material he teaches, unfortunately my class was put online last minute due to his family emergency. This is probably why I failed almost every exam, thank god for extra credit. If you take this class be prepared to study for a minimum of 3 hours, its a very content heavy course.
This class was nearly impossible. Hearing Prof. Connell burp on zoom was the only thing I retained from his lectures. The course material is a lot at once to remember but once you get the idea of stuff the exams arent too hard. You have to study hard though if you want to get above a C.
My class was switched online last minute due to a family emergency. Dr. Connell is nice and super passionate about this class. Gives lots of extra credit, which is good since the only assignments are quizzes/tests. Textbook was a waste of money, especially since he provides outlines and study guides. Fair warning: canvas gradebook is inaccurate!
Professor Connell's online MUS 203 class was at times challenging due to technological difficulties and student interruptions, but I learned interesting topics and felt well-prepared for tests. There are three exams (plus an optional final), and there are lecture notes to take every class. Overall a worthwhile class, especially as a gen-ed credit!
He is very caring and a great person, but there is so much information for the exams that are taken in the testing center.
He is a nice guy but class is hard for a gen ed. He gives a quiz about every other week, based off the text book, and it's not bad but worth very little of your grade. The tests are hard, cover a lot of material, and must be taken in the testing center. His study guides aren't helpful because they are just all the notes from the unit shrunken down.
This class can be easy if you are willing to put in the effort. Exams do cover a lot of material but if you take notes during lecture and utilize the study guide, you will be more than prepared for the exams. Textbook is only used for quizzes, which there are few of. He also gives several opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Connell is a great guy. He is very kind, but this class was very difficult due to the large amount of information you had to memorize for each exam. I never did better than a C on the exams. Exams in the assessment center, closed note. Few open note quizzes that were easy. Offered a couple easy extra credits that boosted your grade a few%
Gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit and not much homework at all. Only thing I would warn about is his tests are quite difficult and require a lot of time spent learning the material. Otherwise not a bad class.
Dr. Connell is a great professor and its clear that he loves what he's talking about. Everyday is a lecture day, so be prepared to take hand-written notes (no electronics allowed in class). He assigns quizes every once in a while and has 4 exams (3 + optional). He offers extra-credit, too. Exams come from lectures and quizes from textbook.
Every day is lecture and tests are very hard. Really more of history rather than music class. Nice guy.
He's a nice guy and really passionate about what he teaches. As long as you show up to class it's a pretty easy A.
I actually like his class, it was taught like a history class (no electronics unless he does a study guide). There were 3 tests with listening parts (get recordings a week before). I could just fill out his study guides and listen to the songs, get a B for sure on his tests, just go to class, he will test on things he said once. Opt. final too.
Dr Connell is very nice and passionate about what he teaches. This course required a lot of memorization of topics which made the tests sort of difficult, but Dr. Connell will answer any questions you have at any time. Although attendance is not mandatory, you will struggle if you don't show up to class. Dr. Connell truly wants you to succeed.
Attendance doesn't matter. Occasional quizzes, some require passwords but you can get them from other people in class. Don't need textbook. 4 Exams all year and they are pretty easy. Make sure to do listening guide songs because they're questions about them on the exam.
Chill dude, and a solid choice for the music/arts cluster! Some of the lectures can be boring, but others have been pretty interesting depending on the genre of music discussed. Tests aren't bad as long as you take notes and study some.
I didn't get the textbook, skipped classes, and was able to end with a B. However, exams are tough and very specific. There are opportunities for extra credit. He is a very nice guy, class material can be interesting. Recommend him but be expected to study for exams.
Professor Connell was one of the best professors I have ever had. He was clear on what his class was, and what was being graded, and even had many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Professor Connell really cares about the subject that he is teaching and makes the class more interesting than it really is.
Open note/internet quizzes are easy and the exams aren't too bad If you study. Super nice and interesting guy!
Best professor for Music203!! He is the best, very understanding, kind and generally easy class. Attendance is not mandatory but most of the test information is given out during lecture. He gives extra credit opportunities and has really interesting lectures that are not hard to sit through and he shows cool videos.
I loved Professor Connell! I took this class as a GenEd and I would highly recommend. My final grade was over 100%. The exams cover a lot of material and be prepared for the listening portion. However, they really aren't bad if you study and go to class. There are also easy extra credit questions on each exam.
Dr Connell is nice, content is relatively boring but he does a good job. He's offered two assignments for extra credit so far with 5 extra credit questions on exams. 4 exams with lowest exam dropped (so optional final). exams are on lectures and quizzes are on textbook. quizzes are open resource so don't buy the textbook unless you really want to
If you don't absolutely love music history with some music theory this class is not for you.
This class is based off 3 exams, and roughly 5 quizzes. He offers 3 forms of extra credit (which I highly recommend doing). Exams are straight forward if you study - make sure to actually listen to the given music before - and use quizlet. Overall what you put in is what you get out.
as long as you study at least half-decently for the exams you can't fail, hes a funny guy that teaches in a non-biased perspective
Definitely the best option for this GenEd Cluster. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you go to class and take half-decent notes, the exams are so much easier. It's very content heavy, but the main ideas of most topics are pretty intuitive. He also plays music during the lectures and it progressively gets better over the course of the year.
I used to be on the Connell hate train, but once I started actually going to class, taking notes, and studying the quizlets and songs the night before a test, I aced with flying colors. 3 exams (4th optional), like 4-5 online quizzes, & EC. Lectures are long and detailed, but he's so passionate and fun to listen to. Would absolutely take again.
Andrew Connell was a great teacher! Lectures were clear, study guides were clear, and all the grades were from online quizzes and three test. If you go to class you will have an A
Nice guy, really passionate about music, and the quizzes are fairly easy. However, if you do not study like this is a major class, you will not succeed. Boring material until 3/4 of the year, making it hard to have motivation. Not his fault. Tests are hyper specific.
Really could not stand lectures, he was very all over the place and is definitely a mumbler. But, it is very easy to succeed in the class. Search up MUS 203 exam quizlets and completely memorize it (the ones that have 200+ terms) and it's a guaranteed A. He also offers 3 easy extra credit assignments.
definitely one of the best gen ed music professors! there were 3 exams and the final was optional and drops lowest exam. about 5 quizzes which you had 3 attempts on and no time limit open book. Tests were hard and very detailed so make sure you take good notes. also listen to the songs they will be important. overall great professor and recommend!
Dr. Connell had a big heart. I could always tell he was passionate about what he was teaching, although the tests were SO hard! He provided a study guide each exam, but each one had around 150+ terms. It was hard to study for exams, but if you came to class than you were bound to do somewhat well. He gave out 15pts of extra credit over the semester
Professor Connell was a good class to take for a gen ed credit. However, the study guide for the tests are 3 pages long, single space, and 2 rows so they take a long to prepare for. I would not recommend taking this section if you are taking multiple major classes, but if you have more time to focus on this one it should be easy.
Andrew Connell really cares about his students and is passionate about music, but his lectures can be long and boring. The exams are straightforward and if you use the study guide they will be pretty easy. Attendance is not mandatory but he does occasionally have quizzes where he will only give the quiz code in class.
Some quizzes that are open note with 3 attempts (easy 10 pts). DO NOT skip class or you will fail the exams. He doesn't allow electronics so you need to be good at fast note-taking. He drops lowest exam grade so if you do well on exams 1-3 you can skip the final. He offers easy extra credit. Lectures can be pretty boring but 100% necessary to pass.
He is a very nice professor that cares about his lectures and music. Every class is a lecture besides the four tests that are scattered throughout the year. No homework. I do advise to print out the lecture outline before each class for the sake of better notetaking. Tests are easy if you pay somewhat attention and study the week prior.
Class sucks unless you enjoy music. have to pay attention a lot and write what he says just writing the slides is not helpful. talks fast but has good ways to catch your grade up if you do bad on tests. Don't take unless you like music.
This class is fun if you enjoy music. Lectures and exams are very dense, so Quizlet is necessary. Don't make it obvious that you are on your phone during lectures.
I love how passionate Connell is. He often discusses artists and influences you've never heard of and their crucial impact. A kind and funny teacher, I loved how eager he was to teach a gen ed. The class is so fun and engaging with lots of videos and interesting textbooks. If you love music.. take him.
Dr. Connell as a professor wasn't bad at all. If you simply attend his lectures and take good notes, you will do great on his tests, which I will add are pretty easy. However, not attending his lectures isn't ideal because all of his notes are given verbally in class. Overall, not a bad class at all, especially for a major requirement.
Professor Connell's GMUS203 class is a fun music gen-ed, but the exams are dense. Quizlet and unstuckstudy ai made studying more manageable. Attend lectures, engage with the material, and you'll do well.
Prof. Connell is very passionate about music and is a great teacher. He provides detailed content and is very knowledgeable. He is a caring and engaging professor and I would recommend if you are interested in music. As long as you take notes and study the material, you will do fine!
I hope this man gets fired. His lectures are boring while his tests are all memorizing obscure information. He provides 300-term study guides that don't have all the relevant information. Grades are based on quizzes you can't view after submitting and exams. You also do not receive your tests back. Take a different professor.
This class is so boring and it just sucks overall. The lectures are never posted online and if you want to get the notes you need to actually show up, which isn't bad, it's just frustrating when you're missing something but you can't look online. The class is really easy though with plenty of opportunities for extra credit, so just show up.
gives good extra credit opportunities but tests are long and heavy
Does not teach, instead, he reads off his sheet and expects us to write every detail. Worst gen ed possible. Way too many terms for each test. His review guides are not helpful at all. If you miss a term while studying, there's a good chance you'll never find it. Has you memorize 20+ songs per test. If you want a class to bore you, take this one.
Dr. Connell is a great man who truly cares about what he's teaching. Shows cool videos and songs in class. Gave us super easy extra credit points for proving voter registration. Hefty study guides that are exactly like the exams, but drops your lowest score, making the final optional. My favorite Gen Ed of the semester by a longshot.
Very very boring lectures but easy class.
Dr. Connell seems very passionate about the study of music but this class was so incredibly boring. The course consists of you going to lecture, writing down everything he says, and regurgitating the information on one of four tests (lowest grade is dropped so that's nice) only a few other short online quizzes. Also very rarely replies to emails.
Dr. Connell is extremely knowledgeable about music, but the lectures can be long and even boring. Tests are basically the only grade, and they aren't easy. Listen to the required music and take USEFUL notes and you will be fine. Lots of extra credit opportunities! Dr. Connell is generally a very kind and caring professor.
Four tests - the final is optional. the quizzes are all online, no lockdown. you don't have to show up and can pass the class. it's very boring, and you don't learn about music, you learn about people and social and political issues at the time the music was released. had a weird TA
Good teacher, he was a good storyteller in a way and knew what he was talking about. Exams were a little difficult but all based on the in-class presentations. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want the notes you have to show up because he doesn't post them. Only homework quizzes were based on textbook
Andrew Connell is a really straightforward and funny guy, definitely introverted but had good lectures. No attendance, HOWEVER Tests assigned for home will have a code you need in class so show up to the ones at the end of the week. Also never used the textbook once. If you use quizlet to study before all the tests chances are you get at least a B-
Great professor. Funny guy who clearly enjoys what he does. Lot of lectures and note taking, but attendance is optional. Will provide extra credit opportunities and will drop your lowest test grade. Content isn't hard if you just show up and pay attention. Pretty easy class and good professor.
Too hard for a gen ed. Tests are really hard and on lots of information. Lectures are boring- you're not going to want to go to his class. Really nice guy though. He only gives out the study guide for the tests a few days before. Lowest test grade is dropped which is nice. Very low average test scores though- like 60%. Would not recommend.
BORINGGGGGG
Dr. Connell is a good professor but his class is not it. ESPECIALLY for a gen ed. Attendance technically isn't mandatory, but if you don't show up you will miss like 10 pages of notes and he doesn't post the slides (only the outlines). Exams are 70 questions long and HARD! If you don't write down exactly what he says, you will fail (he talks fast).
Connell is decent enough, class is pretty easy but boring as can be. Of course the tests are going to be harder if you dont study but if you put in a couple hours of studying the night before then you can do well fairly easily.
Attendance not mandatory, but you will not do well if you don't go to lecture. Keeps lectures interesting, usually 15 minutes is just listening to songs. Tests aren't easy, but not too hard to study for. You're only graded on a couple out of class quizzes and then the exams, but he offers two major extra credit assignments that are super easy.
Lectures are extremely boring and long, no technology allowed, and only 6 quizzes and 4 (1 optional) exams. You have to memorize songs and he acts like his class is the most important. DO NOT TAKE as a general education, it will be harder than you major classes.
If you go to class, take notes, and review for tests, you will be completely fine. Attendance isn't mandatory, however it helps to go to learn about the course material. This class was interesting, and only got boring a couple of times. The prof is passionate about his material, and the quizzes are easy and boosts grade a lot.
This class provided a lot of extra credit opportunities which really helped. He is really into the material which is great. The exams are a lot of material and it does require going to class and studying a week before the exams to get an A. Attendance is not mandatory but you need to go because his lecture outlines only have half the notes.
if you have to take this class I recommend ONLY TAKING HIM IF YOU ARE GOING TO CLASS. tests are impossible to do well on unless you go to his lectures, take good notes, and pay attention. Not much work outside of class other than some quizzes, all that really matters is just going and paying attention if you want a decent grade
His class is easy if you show up and take notes. Honestly go on Studocu and look up the study guides people post on there and study them and you will do fine. He drops a test grade- the final if you do well on the others. There is also extra credit which I HIGHLY recommend doing. DONT GET THE TEXTBOOK-it will collect dust.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY GENED CREDIT. Dr. Connell is very passionate about what he does. However, tests are impossible. There are only 9 graded assignments for the entire semester.
He was an amazing teacher that was passionate about what he taught. he does not take attendene but I would highly reccomend going because the information on study guides comes straight from class. He is great and caring. he makes a boring class very interesting. As long as you attend class and listen, you will do just fine.
Prof Connell is super passionate about what he teaches and tries to keep lecture interesting. Half of lecture is listening to different music examples. No homework, few quizzes, and 3 tests with an optional final. Tests are difficult with the study guides being literally hundreds of terms. Can get interesting, lowkey put me on to some music.
TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Attendance isn't mandatory, Take-home quizzes up to 3 attempts, Few exams with helpful quizlets online, drops your lowest exam score, an optional final, extra credit opportunities for being registered to vote, and a short 200-300 word reflection on a documentary. Class is genuinely so slight i wish i could take it again
This class was so boring and gets easy to skip because theres no attendance and actually going to class doesn't help much because his notes aren't that helpful. His lectures get so boring and he will get mad at you for being on a phone or laptop. I'm honestly surprised at all the good reviews. Don't take this if you want an easy gen ed.
Almost no homework, and you don't really need to show up for class. He just reads the slides the whole time, but it is kind of hard to take notes because he tends to either do fill-in-the-blank questions too fast or change the slide too quickly. The tests are easy, but you have to study a lot for them and definitely know all the songs on the list.
He is clearly passionate about what he teaches but it did not work for me. He ONLY allows paper and pencil for note-taking, and his slides are just pictures. The information that's on the test is all from what he says so if you space out easily this won't be easy. Very few grades which make error not possible. Sadly he's the only prof for the class
Mr. Connell is passionate about the music he teaches, but the lectures can get quite monotonous. The study guides he releases a week before have everything you need to know but still contain hundreds of vocabulary words. This is just a history class. You can do very well if you study hard. The textbook is only for the quizzes, which are open note.
There are some online quizzes and 4 exams, including the final. He drops the lowest exam grade and has several extra credit opportunities. The exams are detailed, but I took good notes in class and used Quizlet to study and did well. Exams also include listening to songs and identifying related details. Lectures can be boring, don't buy textbook.
Very passionate about the subject, however I would avoid this class if you have zero musical experience. There were 3 exams, 2 quizzes, 1 paper, and no homework, so there weren't many chances to apply the knowledge, however not having work was nice. Gives easy chances to get extra credit on the exams and in the class.
He is very passionate about what he does, and it is shown in his lecture material. DO NOT buy the textbook it is absolutely not necessary. There are only quizzes and tests with some extra credit. The tests are very easy as long as you take notes during lecture.
