No organization to class. He does not seem qualified to teach.
No real organization, really the only requirement for class is to show up and take notes.
Dr. Doyle has an excellent teaching style. He explains topics thourougly and helps students to understand the significance of important historical events and figures. One of the best at our school!
Doyle is a great professor! He always had little tid bits to add to the lecture that really helped you understand the era. He is one of the best professors at Winthrop!
I had Doyle for Sports History, which is what he is really interested in, so the class was fun. Not easy, but fun. He's a funny guy and will remember your name everytime you see him. He's a cutie too =)
Ive got him for Sports History, and all he does is ramble on. He says ummmm and mmmmmk about 100 times a class and does nothing but lecture.
I'm not a big history buff, but I actually paid attention in this class, partly because I had to take mad notes to pass the tests though. He makes it interesting and fun...tests came straight from the notes.
MARRY ME DR. DOYLE!!!! This teacher is really hot, and tells funny stories and jokes during class. He makes me wish I was a History major.
This is my second time having him and I despise him. He is not organized, his jokes are retarded, and if he says ummmmm one more time I'm gonna scream. Also, what's the point of the extra papers and book report? Those went out with high school!
Has a very self-effacing sense of humor, which I love. The papers were a little difficult, but he was very helpful and moved the due dates back to give us more time. He also cut down the work on one of them.
Great professor, enjoyed his class. Knowledgeable, likes what he does. His lectures ARE organized and comprehensive. He's funny (sometimes even on purpose). The "ummmmms" do get old, but it's a small price to pay. I plan on taking him for 212.
very interesting and friendly. helpful and fun. definately not easy, but you get a lot out of it. his jokes are corny, but its cool.
awful class awful teacher awful experience...NOTHOT
He is the worst guy ever..always talks talks talks and never stops talking. Everybody hates this guy and he thinks he is great because he wrote 1 freakin book on history. He is horrible big time
The most boring professor I have ever had!! Avoid him at all costs...Never explains anything and his tests are ridiculous!!
Avoid this man at all costs. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS... go to summer school if you have to.
This dude is HORRIBLE!! He puts at least 6 chapters in each test. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I took at least 2 pages of notes front and back each class. He grades papers like you're supposed to be a freakin english major, and he is soooo BORING.
Have taken him three times. Well organized, knows his history, always helpfull. He does not babysit college students. To the 211 students wait till you get into 500 level courses and you will relize how good Doyle is.
He is a great! If you want an easy class go to a tech school and not college. He is always available to students, and will assist in any way possible! If you did not ask for help, do not cry for being slack!
Doyle is hard, but he's well worth the risk. He is the best history professor I've had here and is very knowledgable on his subjects. He's always open to questions during class and has been very helpful during office hours.
Really HARD!!! The Book Review paper is a JOKE!! I hate this class! Avoid having him! Lecture is HARD to understand! Doesn't seem like a professor you can go to to talk about anything! HARD!!! AVOID!!
Good teacher! interesting lectures. I will say that he likes to hear himself talk, but I enjoyed enthusiasm for the subject.
His tests are challenging, but it pays off if you study. He is willing to help anyone who is interested. Again, some of the assignments and tests are difficult, but hello, it's college. I was very pleased with this course.
His test and hard but he is a good teacher. Jumps around a lot not like in the material I mean he just jumps and hits desks. Sometimes his lectures is hard to follow but for the most part I really enjoyed his class. He is LOUD!!!!
Very hard, and not easy going. Tests are the worst!
His tests are easy and he is the best professor I have ever had!
DON'T DO IT!!!! TURN BACK NOW!!!! (unless you are a history dork...lol)
I AM BEGGING YOU PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. YOU WILL NOT GET AN A,B,or C!
Fun professor...challeging course, actually on a college level. Brillant man! Quite Zany
if you are a history major, you'll love him. if not, you'll loathe him. he sucks. he's boring, but so is history. his tests are INSANE and there is WAY too much material on them. they are tricky and i never did well no matter if i studied for 3 days or 3 hours.
Class is hard, but he is a really good professor. I got an A, so it is possible. You're going to have to study and go to class, but it is college. Alot of material but its history! Gives GREAT CURVES!!! Don't be afraid...
He and Silverman are my faves. This man knows what he is talking about. Pay attention and you'll learn something- that is what you took the class for, isn't it? Read the material and be able to talk with him about it- you'll do fine in his or any other class.
keeps all the lectures on topic with what we need to know, fulfilling class, tests are very comprehensive and take some thought and studying, throws in some humor every once in awhile
THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER AT WINTHROP! THIS IS MY ONLY C AND I WORKED HARD. DO NOT TAKE HIM HE IS ARBITRARY AND BORING. YOU WILL REGRET TAKING THIS TEACHER.
Great professor. Not an easy A. He covers a lot of material. But, if you show up to class, take notes and make an effort then he will go out of his way to help you out. Doyle is a really funny guy and will sometimes tell some good stories in class too.
His class is hard if you don't show up and do your work. If you take good notes and put some effort forth you'll do fine. Plus he told us a story of how he was working at a zoo one time and he and his buddy got a bear high.
a very...different professor, takes himself too seriously, plays favorites, but overall, very fair and you do actually learn something fi you pay attention
Interesting professor. He is kind of random at times, yet the tests for his class are pretty much straight from his lectures and the book. So far, so good.
I had Professor Doyle for History my second semester of my freshman year and I still remember him. He was hilarious, and incorporated stories from his own crazy life into history. Even if you're not interested in History, take his class and you can sit there and just stare at HIM! He has this whole Indiana Jones hotness going on. Very sexy.
he covers A LOT of material, so be prepared to study. but you CAN make an A on the tests, i've done it almost every time. you just gotta make sure to study his study guides. he tells funny stories and gets off subject a lot, but its usually a good thing. he gives curves too. just show him that you care about the class, and he'll take care of you.
My Favorite Professor at Winthrop! There should be more like him! I got an A in 211 and 212. People, all you have to do is study, go to class, and go see him if you have any questions. He tells it how it is and I loved it.
Did not like his style of teaching (lecture) and class notes did not correlate with chapter readings.
very bad teaching style dosent explain things very well real boring
He is a great professor. He does cover a lot of material. His entire class is lecture, but if you really pay attention you will get great notes. His test come almost entirely from the notes. If you have questions ask. He does take attendance.Where you sit the first day is where you sit. His test are really hard, but if you study you should do fine.
he does not explan things clearly at all, and then just goes off on subjects not even related to history
If you don't take good notes in class, then you're not going to do well on the tests, so pay really good attention when he's talking. If you zone out during class and then expect to study from the book and make a good grade on the test, it's not going to happen. Trust me. He is an interesting professor to take, though. He really knows his history.
he totally sucked..his lectures were so off the wall you could not take good notes and his tests were based on his lectures so there was no way to do well. if possible do not take him!
Those who thought this class was difficult are either stupid or chronic underachievers. He writes a detailed study guide (more than he has to)and even answers the questions coming from complete muppets. Very interesting guy; you will hear his thoughts on a variety of pertinent matters. More than willing to shoot the breeze with you in his office.
This class was relatively easy if you paid attention. Try not to miss class that often and sit near the front so he recognizes your face/name. If you take good notes and at least attempt to follow everything he talks about you should do fine. He doesn't grade papers too harshly, and is always there to help.
Dr. Doyle's class is relatively easy if you paid attention. I love his class because he always gets into the subject or area of discussion. He is awesome, and if you like a relatively animate history professor, then I recommend that you take his class. You will not regret it at all.
what a little worm of a man! he is the worst professor i have ever had! his lectures are rediculous! he says umm at least 210 times per lecture! he is scatterbrained and unorganized! he forgets what he is saying constantly! im pretty sure he's on crack! he is NOT teacher material. he gets sidetracked every 5 sec. test are impossible!! class sucks!!
Doyle's a knowledgeable man. I enjoyed his random outburst! He's a lecturer so take good notes and pay attention in class. Come to class everyday. He gives a thorough study guide before exams. It's not an easy A, but it can be if you start studying early.
Well, Let's just say he made the worst first impression ever. I dropped his class after the first day because he was so unprofessional. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Awesome professor! Very passionate, and funny. And kinda hot. The only mark I'd give against him is that his tests are next to impossible. MC-format, the question stems themselves are easy, but the distractors are written to make you doubt what you know. It's hard as heck to get good grades on his tests. But I like him anyway. :)
This dude is nuts, but that's what keeps me up during his lectures. It's not impossible to get a B, but pretty hard. If you walk past his office and think he's with a student, most likely he's just talking to himself. Very animated character.
Worst teacher i have ever had...if you like lectures and want to fall asleep take this class... i dopped his class..Good luck to any who decide to take him.
Dr. Doyle is passionate about what he does, he knows everything there is to know about History, I'm just not a fan of the subject. At times he appeared normal, but for the majority of the time he seemed a bit off.
This class is crazy! His tests are extremely hard even though he gives a study guide...he asks trick questions to make you question yourself! Lectures are boring & he goes on about how he used to be a construction worker, zookeeper, etc. The man is crazy but very willing to help if you go to him & ask for it. Got a B but is was not easy!!!!!
Professor Doyle SUCKS!!!!! He class lectures are all over the place and if you want to take notes in his class, good luck understanding them because he is all over the board and than some! He really needs to go back into construction because he has no clue what he's doing in the class room. AVOID this professor if you want to maintain a good gpa
Doyle was a cool prof. He did tend to ramble & jump around a bit, & the tests were hard. The key to passing is read the book, use the study guides, and pay some attention in class. If you need help, he will help you. As for the book essays, just see him for help. He grades on a curve, plus he adds points to all the tests. He wants everyone to pass!
Prof. Doyle has a lot of experience and knows so much! I'm not a fan of history but he can totally get you excited about it. I was able to talk about what i learned in his class long after it was over -and i actually sounded like I knew what i was talking about! He expects his students to work- but you learn so much! HOT too!
Ugh! Avoid him at all cost! Tests are terribly hard and lecture notes are all over place. Definetely not a top pick for history teachers here. Very anal and choppy personality. He even went off on this one chick in class for eating peanuts... I think he should go back into construction.
no comment
You literally have to take your own notes, because he gives poor notes.
If you take this prof. you should be prepared to take your own notes and read every single chapter assigned. I've been doing it and I'm still having trouble with the class. Also his jokes are very lame, so please just laugh so there isn't that awkward silent moment, because it's just sad.
Fantastic professor who knows his stuff and is excited to share it. Pay attention, take notes and you're guaranteed to learn something and walk away with a better appreciation of our history. if you want easy, go to Tech.
This guy is a huge flake. He says he'll grade tests and makes study guides, and then puts it off for weeks. If he can't fit his lecture into the classtime, he runs over ten minutes and expects you to stay because he's going to test you on that material. Don't take this guy, he knows history but teaching is not the profession for him.
All over the place during lecture. You dont know what is important or not. I dropped to save my GPA!
Doyle really knows what he is talking about but is hard to follow at times. Not only because his thoughts jump around, but also because he talks non-stop the whole hour and fifteen. He is extremely helpful though. Will return emails and phone calls ASAP. He is a pretty cool guy.
Dr. Doyle is a great teacher. When I first walked into his class he did bore me for the first three days but after that he was interesting. Many people don't like him because his test have a lot of comprehensive question but if you take good notes you'll do fine.
I have never enjoyed a class so much! He knows his content and keeps me engaged! He believes you should earn your education. Gone are the days of trying to cheat in High School and expecting something for nothing. He will help, so don't whine and ask him! I took him for several classes and would again!
Dr.Doyle is fun! His class is interesting and he really knows his history. The exams are based off the lectures, so if you attend class and take good notes the exams should be a breeze. He is available anytime for the student, but can be a little off center. He has a great sense of humor which made the history class really interesting. Great teache
He doesnt spoon food you. If you attend class, take notes and put forth any effort you will do fine. He gives you test reviews and as long as you learn the info in depth you will do fine. You have to try hard to fail his class.
Basically, you'll go to class for an hour and fifteen minutes and take notes. Bring gum and candy to stay awake. He gives study guides for the tests, but they still are hard. He usually doesn't have things graded or ready by the day he tells you. Either find another teacher or just take your chance with him.
Doyle knows what he's talking about, but that's about the only positive thing about his class. He's so scattered, doesn't do anything on time and is just plain weird and very rude. I would not take him again just because of his awful attitude.
Tests were not easy but if you attend class, pay attention, and take notes it is possible to get a good grade. He is very knowledgeable and is fair. I absolutely loved the class and his teaching style. So much so I'm taking him again next semester
Professor Doyle is awesome. Take notes and attend class (perfect attendance gets you extra points on the final) No memorizing dates, just ideas. No cell phone use, or he will call you out. He goes on tangents every day, but typically they are interesting and it just eats up time. He's one of the realest professors i've had.
I walked into class thinking that this would be a fairly easy history class. I was wrong. He was late on grading stuff. He gave the class the study guide Monday and a test Wednesday. He was unprepared most of the time. He doesn't use any technology which can be hard for someone who finds it a bit easier to use that. Avoid him if you can!!!!
Not the best instructor. He writes his own reviews on this website. Just so you know, all the green comments are written by him.
Not very student friendly and is very late in grading papers. I have not liked this class and recommend that you look for another teacher. Beware as he plays favorites
You have to do your work. The class is challenging, but if he sees you putting in effort, he will do anything in his power to help you. You just can't be lazy. Not an easy A.
Arrogant, condescending, pushes his political and social agendas. Never disagree with this man, he is narrow minded.
Soo this has to be the worst professor I ever had. He is so difficult , and the test are no better . I would not recommend anyone to take a history 211 class with Professor Doyle.......I can promise you that you will fail !
If you're into history he may be your guy. He is extremely tough grader. Here it is final grades have come out and he just emailed us with a grade from a paper we did at the beginning of the semester. DO NOT take him if possible. most people drop the class or fail...
Very hard class. although I made an A, I worked my butt off for it. expect a 1750 word paper, to listen to lectures the ENTIRE class, and essays on every test. Will work with you though, always willing to help if you go speak to him.
I saw many bad reviews and was worried. I wanted to be a voice to those of you who are considering Dr, Doyle. He knows what its like to work for his education and he expects you to do the same. He is always willing to help you, and he will tell you the same. You come to college to be tested, challenged, and achieve. He wants good work, not slackers
Bad teacher. Long lectures. Horribly worded tests. Unclear as can be.
The class was not too bad. There is a great deal of reading and it is essential to pass the course. Dr. Doyle also gives reader quizzes, so that makes it even more essential to read. Very helpful with answering questions about a test or paper.
Do not take this class under him! He is terrible and he does not explain information well! His lectures are long and boring. His tests are just plan confusing! You have 3 tests (including the final), 3 in-class essays, 1 paper, and 13 online quizzes. I would not recommend his class to anyone!
He is a good teacher, however he is a little weird. If you pay attention and actually try in class you can get a lot from him. He will be weird and unclear if you do not try.
I would recommend Doyle's class to history majors or someone truly interested. There's long lectures, tough tests/quizzes, readings, and a book essay. However, if you take good notes and do the work, it can be an easy grade. I love history so I enjoy his lectures and random facts, but I know many do not.
His lectures are boring but that is kind of expected when it comes to a history class. He assigns a book report and doesn't give you a lot of time to do it. There are weekly online quizzes you have to take which are long. You have to study for his tests but they are multiple choice. His is very awkward and may make you feel a little uncomfortable.
I looked at the reviews of rate my professor before choosing him and I really should have paid attention to them. This is a HORRIBLE professor!! Unorganized, not clear with his lectures, test are hard, and gives off the vibe that he does not care about your grade!
Lectures can be a little boring, but his test are very easy.
Professor Doyle is very passionate about what he does. I could tell by sitting in class he knows what he's talking about. If you listen and take good notes in class (don't just write what he writes, write what he says too) you'll be fine. I honestly just talked to him & got to know him and he's very helpful if he knows you. Listen & you'll be fine.
Definitely worth taking if you WANT TO LEARN, not so much if you're looking for an easy A. If you don't pay attention, naturally you're not going to do good. If you pay attention and study hard you'll do fine. Sure he can be "mean" to some people, but I think we all know that some classmates deserve a slap of reality every now and then.
If you are taking this class because it is required by the school and not you major do not take from this professor. If you want to actually study history or have a major where history is important his class is set up so in order to well you have to learn the material.
Your main grades are tests. If you're a good test taker, then great. Otherwise, steer clear because they are hard to say the least
Dr. Doyle is a great teacher. His lectures may be boring however he covers everything on his tests. He provides students with a study guide and test questions are usually straight to the point. Attending class is important and beware of LearningCurve quizzes, they do sneak up. Overall great professor, one of my least demanding courses.
Dr. Doyle is very old-fashioned. With that being said, he is very passionate about history and his lectures, usually, are not boring or monotonous. If you enjoy history, this class will be a breeze. He gives detailed study guides & majority of the information comes from lectures.
Very lecture heavy. Gives very vague information, but tests include very in depth details that are not explained in class. Very unorganized in lecture style and very unforgiving with student-athletes.
Dr. Doyle's history class is strictly lecture in class along with easy but lengthy online quizzes. Make sure to pay attention in class and take lot of notes or you will have trouble passing. Gives out study guides for information that will be on every test, including the final. Overall great class. I hate history but I would take Doyle again.
Grades very roughly, he lectures the whole time, he does not use ANY technology in the classroom he only writes in the white board. I have never fallen asleep in a class before his. Attendance is mandatory you rarely use the physical textbook but weekly online quizzes are give using hw access code.
The class is completely lectures- but he knows what he is talking about and has a weird sense of humor so they aren't totally miserable. Online quizzes are annoying but graded by completion. He does not post notes so you have to go to class to get the info. Tests can be tricky, but if you pay attention and study, you should be fine.
He was a bit wired and all over the place. It was clear that he loved history but it was difficult following his lecturing style and he also left a lot of things out that ended up on the test. His study guides were hard to decipher and many items placed on the guide were not on the test and things left out were. I loved history until this class.
Doyle is misunderstood, I think. This is the first history class Ive actually enjoyed, and I believe its because Doyle really makes it so that his students are aware on how important history is today. He knows what he is talking about, and he is super animated with his lectures. Ive learned a lot so far in this semester + enjoy coming to class
He is very lecture heavy and the online quizzes are a pain but easy. Attend every class and take notes, exams are based off of what he talks about in class.
Does not email you back efficiently, never tells you your grades, his lectures are confusing and the students never know what topic is being talked about.
He's a very interesting character. Very lecture heavy. I recommend trying your best on all assignments as he is a tough grader. You will do a lot of writing.
Avoid him at all costs unless you're a history major. He grades like you're expected to know every single detail and is extremely technology unfriendly.
His classes are entirely lecture based which might sound like a bad thing, but his knowledge on the subject matter mixed with his personality leads to a great experience for anybody who loves history. Make sure to take notes on just about everything that you hear. He gives lots of useful tidbits of information.
Doyle has a very animated personality and his classes are very lecture heavy. You will get your grades every blue moon, so Id recommend emailing him if you want to know your grades asap. For his written assignments, try hard on those because he goes hard on them. For mid and finals use the textbook! Use the lecture notes as a guide.
This professional expects his students to be on the same level as he is! On any written assignment, you need to have EVERY detail. Cant miss one thing! Even if you have the entire circle drawn out, if it isnt filled in, you get at least 10 points off. Hes very particular.
I actually enjoyed his lectures and even looked forward to them as he is very animated when talking about the material. His powerpoints are very helpful for the three essay exams. Note taking is important for the lectures but it's not hard. He's a slow grader so try and email him if you want to know what you have, but I would take him again.
Dr. Doyle was a great professor, and a great boss. I worked for the graduate department around 2012. As much as I think I annoyed him, he was vital to my growth and success at WU. I remember the day one of his old professors passed away and he shared some tearful memories, good ones, with my class. I hope he knows how impactful he was to me.
Andy Doyle is, by far, the most interesting person I have ever met. If you would just sit in one of his classes, you'd know what I was talking about. However, he is very lecture heavy and the study guides he gives are loaded with unneeded information that was very overwhelming. But if you just show up to class and study, you'll pass.
Dr. Doyle is a passionate professor but he often goes on rants about solar energy instead of talking about what we are actually learning in class. He is knowledgeable and is very caring but I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher. He gives very few assignments & for the book review gave very poor instructions. He takes forever to grade work!
okay... he spends a lot of time talking about fossil fuels and his political opinions. Like daily. He also never returns assignments, so you really won't know your grade. I prefer paper textbooks generally, but don't waste your $ on this one. Just get the access code.
Doyle isn't the best lecture professor. Attendance is mandatory just for you to sit in the class for an hour and 15 minutes straight. This is a very lecture heavy class and very boring. You will have times where you want to fall asleep, however, he is very animated with how he explains things, so you might get a chuckle or two from his jokes. GL!
Doyle is hard at grading but if you go to his office hours im sure you will make a B or higher on your test.
Can be VERY rude at time, but he DOES email back
This class was really hard for no reason. Boring lectures and he would go on tangents about things nuclear power and drugs all the time. Super harsh grader and he does it on vibes alone. Takes a long time to get tests back and you have to nag him about it. One time he emailed us at 3am about a test date being moved. DO THE LEARNING CURVES
Doyle only lectures and gets off topic very easily. He flat out refuses to put any grades in black board and doesn't double check when doing mid term grades. He grades exams very harshly and when you get them back the feedback is close to incoherent. Just all around very cocky and way too harsh for a gen-ed class. Avoid him if possible.
I really don't understand all of this hate, I had him in the fall and he made learning about History fun. With his sense of humor I don't understand how he could be bad. You do need to study for the essay tests as they are the majority of your grade, just put in a little effort! The whining is from people who did not try I guarantee you.
You have to ask him for your grade if you want to know it. Assignment dates are not clear and you have to check daily and ask him directly. He talks so much and there is no form of interaction with the students. Some times he is funny though.
If you are taking a course for an easy grade, this is not for you. However, if you want a knowledgeable professor, who cares and one who will prepare you for life after college, he is excellent. His lectures are animated and full of information. Expect to read both the texts and assigned supplemental material.
Details are important. Must show up to class and must read very diligently or you will struggle. Long lectures but he is a passionate speaker and is a funny person. Laid back but you must do what's expected.
Professor Doyle's lectures can be quite engaging, but his grading is notoriously strict. Do the readings, take detailed notes, and utilize study tools like unstuck ai to succeed. Attendance is a must, but the class is manageable with dedication.
He talked usually for the whole period, with not much interaction with the students unless someone asks a question. Homework was never graded until last minute, so you don't really know what your grade is.
I have 3 essays and a test still ungraded and it is the last day of classes with our final Wednesday. I was scolded for going to the bathroom too many times over the semester. I will NEVER take this professor again because of his terrible attitude, lack of timely feedback, & inability to accept any other opinion than his own.
Professor Doyle gives bullet points for important information you should study on every exam. I found that to be helpful. Take notes in class, because sometimes power point information will be on the exam. READ THE BOOK. Take notes. Its alot of reading but worth it. He does go on mini rants about political things, but it is important to be aware.
Untimely grading. he'll give you the syllabus but it means nothing because we only did 2 out of the 4 proposed assignments. Went on tangents about politics that nobody liked and constantly talked about trump. Has weird opinions about slavery. just steer clear if you can.
Dude is a major racist, had to get his license reviewed a few years ago because he said "slavery wasn't real". In my class he also made extremely weird comments about slavery and kept downplaying it and saying how it "wasn't that bad." should NOT be teaching history
Im gonna be honest when I say that the only reason I liked him is because I talked to him early on about the class and got along well with him. He does not allow computers so all notes have to be hand written. He is CRAZY but funny if you like the same things he does. ABSOLUTELY do all the homework and assignments or you are not passing this class.
College is supposed to be for adults. If a grown adult tells you he is a nazi, take him seriously, even if he laughs after.
I can understand how he may not be everyone's preferred professor, but I would take him again! He is lecture heavy, hates technology, grades by hand, and is late to hand back graded assignments. But his lectures are also very informative, and he gives good insight into different areas of history that you are not traditionally taught!
His class is not hard though he does not like any electronics so all notes are hand written. He is just not a great person, he is very skeptical about slavery and down plays its extent. Also goes on off topic rants about modern politics, huge Trump supporter. While his class is not particularly difficult, he just seems to not be a great person.
