Though he is a tall drink of water, he is still very approachable. I learned some boring things that I would not have cared about normally.
He is understand and very teach. Before I not know statistics but now I know. Course is not easy!
He put a lot of effort into explaining why we need to know statistics in our careers.
His final exam was hard but if you hear him says "this is a good question for exam" in class, he is telling you what is on it!
He is a good prof to be considered. He cares about how you do and usually let you go early. Also, if you disagree with your TA's marking, always go and talk to him :) He is happy to adjust for you. His attitudes towards students are quite like "peer-to-peer" :D No stress at all in his class. Recommended although it's a bit hard to finish his exams.
He is a handsome and nice prof :)
Very clear and direct lecturer. My only complaint is he rushes his lectures only to end early most days. You'll be rereading many powerpoint slides.
Clear, efficient, and engaging. Strongly recommend!
Good Instructor!
super helpful, and did a great job explaining everything we need to know as clear as possible.
he is nice prof. his midterm is easy, and his final is a bit hard, but if you read his lectures, you will be fine!
Great prof! Keeps the lectures interesting and fun!
smart man
Andrew was an excellent teacher. I have ABSOLUTELY no interest in stats, and I was really surprised that he was able to keep a class of over 200 students completely engaged. He was always willing to help answer extra questions and responded to emails within 2 hours.
The average of the class is high. The course is not hard, but it's not easy to get an A...
He adds a lot to the textbook by teaching us why we need to know how to use statistics properly.
Great course so far!
I did not expect to even like this class but it inspired me to change my concentration to Business Analytics. Almost every lecture had some event that made it engaging and memorable. You will enjoy this course if you take with Mr. Flostrand. Warning! Competition for high grades is very hard because so many students want the few "A"s available.
Best professor I've encountered so far, nice and patient, really have the will to help students engaged in the lecture, basically clarify any problems or questions you have and have regular load of assignments. The course is easy but the curve grades could make it tough, but if you do all the assignments and materials carefully you will a good mark
I really enjoyed taking this class this semester. The only thing that sucked was that the midterm average was at around 80% which was set at C+. I mean can't students be successful for once and just have an A- or even a B for a 80%? Curving just destroyed any self- esteem I had.
Hes a pretty good prof. Compared to Zhang (I dropped his class) Flostrand is probably the best prof teaching BUEC 232. He goes slow like a turtle to try getting people to remember stuff in class so its less studying. Only thing I dislike is his written Q's in the final. Some didn't make sense and the grade avg for written Q's was a fail.
Most of the lectures were fun, and that is surprising for a mostly math course. The last part of the course was much heavier than the first part so you need to keep up or it will crush you. Not too much work but far from easy. Be careful to find yourself a solid partner for group assignments, it makes a BIG difference!
I feel I really learned something important. I loved his examples!
Andrew really cares and tries hard to help the students who want to learn. His pace is slow enough for anyone to follow, but it might be too slow for some. He is polite and funny.
Good prof in general. Kind of awkwardly funny but gives clear lectures. Some assignments are hard work for 2% of your grade but forces you to keep up with the material.
He is easy to learn from. The homework should be worth more than only 15%!
Best prof as of yet!! He's hilarious and also a very clear lecturer. Would definitely recommend. He manages to make stats fun. :-)
Overall, Andrew is a good teacher, but you have to like his teaching style (he makes you write down his slides everytime which I hated, he should let us print them out so we can annotate). Midterm is quite easy, Final exam written questions can get tough. Study his lecture slides in and out and you should be good. Expect a lot of work.
I heard George Zhang is good but Andrew is great! Final questions were the same as examples in class.
The midterm is really easy but the final is 60% and he makes it really hard. He is a really good teacher and friendly, always willing to help :)
FUNNY!!! He says "blah blah blah" and shows videos. You have to study.
Over all Flostrand was great. The final exam was made of questions exactly like he gave us for homework so use your homework to study for the final!!!
I liked this course. It was fun.
Andrew is God. I absolutely loved him this Fall semester. He oozes with enthusiasm and charisma and really knows his stuff. He takes his time and makes sure you understand whats going on and just doesn't rush through. He's an exceptional professor and he truly has my upmost respect and admiration. Aspire to be successful and sincere like him :)
THE BEST!
Do not take BUEC 232 with anyone else. I dare to say that Andrew is the best professor I have ever had. He is an amazing speaker, truly cares about his students, and is so clear in his teaching. I hate math, hate stats, and somehow I still enjoyed his class.
Good professor
Great professor. I would dare to say, I think he is way better than Michael Johnson, you can see the passion Andrew has!!!
He's funny and cares about students :)
Andrew is the best! The big class is noisy so my advice? Sit up front to hear.
one of the awesome lecturer so far in my university life, lecture is clear and fun. The final is tricky and tough, but manageable if you have go through the final review material and do the practice in the textbook
Laid back energy, friendly and funny, very passionate. "Frostlord" as he calls himself is a great prof!
Amazing professor. Made a math course very entertaining. His lectures are very clear and he is very open to questions on the material in class. Midterm was easy but final was very difficult. Assignments a lot of work for how much they're worth. Overall an amazing professor and human being - highly recommend him
Don't take Buec with anyone else, Andrew is by far the best one at SFU. Quirky sense of humour and an all around nice guy he made stats actually manageable. Midterm is very easy but final was more difficult, however 3/6 of the long answers you know will be there. Only knock against him is the extra assignments but they help you stay focused.
He really cares. Don't take Flostrand's course if you want an easy A because it will take effort and he goes to extremes to prevent cheating, but you will learn important material and enjoy the lectures.
Andrew is an amazing professor, his lectures and slides are clear. The midterm is super easy but the final is totally different. MC are tricky and the problems are tough, you have to practice a lot if you want to do well
Excellent lectures! I didn't miss a class!
Two things to know. First, he assigns a lot of homework. Prolly more than average for this course and there is no way any prof gives a harder final for 60% of course grade. Second, his lectures are a treat! They are fun and they are interesting and useful!
BUEC is going to be a tough course no matter whom you take it with. But in my experience and from what I've heard from fellow students. Andrew is probably the best prof you could take it with.
Take this course with nobody else! Worth it even to delay taking it until his class is available... he makes a difficult course MUCH more manageable and can explain things in the clearest and simplest possible way. Great lecture slides. Responds to emails right away. He's pretty funny too. Highly recommend him!
I laughed at every single lecture, he has a very good sense of humour that helps balancing the difficult materials covered in the class, the midterm is easy but the final is challenging and demanding but if you stay on top of your study it should be fine. Online assignments are like free marks because he gives many attempts (sometimes unlimited).
Andrew is awesome. This is not an easy course but he made it very interesting and gave us pretty good real life examples. The midterm was on the easy side, since it only covered four chapters and are MCs. The final was challenging but still doable if you fully understand the slides and do the textbook questions. Totally love this course :)
Andrew is a great prof for this buec. His lectures include many real life examples which will help you understand the concept much better. He does go through the slides quite fast so I recommend reading the chapter before the lectures so you will have an idea of what he is talking about. Midterm was easy but the final was challenging.
he is a very nice person in general . His midterms are way too easy and the final is very very hard. if you attend the class and listen to him, you will pass but if you want to sore good then you have to take this course seriously and study from the day one
This is a super class! I chose Flostrand partly because I read RMP and I was not disappointed. The math takes work but it is worth it, and the lectures could not be better. Strongly recommend!
He is pretty handsome, very professional and an excellent lecturer! I give him 20/10 :)
Hilarious, professional, intelligent and very hot. Firm with grading and cheating but goes all the way to help out students. BUEC 232 will always be hard no matter who you take it with so better enroll in Andrew's class! MCs are fair, SAs will require computations so you better practice, take smart notes, and consult with a TA right away when lost!
At first Andrew comes off as a bit intimidating but is actually one of the nicest people ever, so open to questions and helping students! He's very organized so it's so simple to learn from him if you pay 100% attention in lecture. Also very funny and attractive. Outstanding professor and valuable course, well done Beedie.
Super easy midterm and surprisingly hard final.. but manageable. His lectures and powerpoint slides were very helpful in understanding the concepts but in the end, you need lots of practice to succeed. Your grade will drop miserably after the final exam if you don't work on extra problems on WileyPlus. Overall, amazing prof!
Mr. Flostrand is a very skilled instructor. If you are passionate about statistics and enjoy working with numbers, take his class. If not, I think it will be a bit difficult to keep up with his curriculum. As he says, he likes to "empower" students which definitely shows through his attitude and willingness to help. :D
Frostlord was great and had his moments that made me and my friends laugh. Some of the content can be dry but he tries his best to make it interesting. He uses good in-class practice that makes you think. Beware of pop quizzes! Assignments are graded quite toughly so watch out for details. Really only need the online version of the text for data.
Easy midterm, difficult final. Knows all the material but can not teach it very well. Piled on at the end of the semester. Midterm was on 4 chapters and was almost 8 weeks into the course and there were two assignments before it. Had two assignments the week before the final and added about 7 more chapters following the midterm.
Flos God is the best BUS 336 professor that uses a hands-on approach to learn through Excel. The puts in a great deal of time to help you (individually) troubleshoot your Excel and make sure you understand. Grab this meme lord for your prof or wait till he teaches the next semester. Flos or nothing !(btw no better 336 profs)
I took both 232 and 336 with him and I was not disappointed! He is a great guy, chill personality, excellent at explaining concepts! First time teaching 336, some flaws but tried his best to help us out, Ive never seen a prof walk around the class so much to help students! And he makes hilarious jokes! Overall perfect!
I dont think anyone would dislike Andrew, unless youre dumb and cant keep up with his method of teaching. I like him because he makes you work for it, and those who actually put in the effort get what they deserve. Would take any course he teaches in a hearbeat
Clear lectures, but gives way too much time for students to take notes. Final exam focused on obscure small details - not a single question on Probability, Binomial or Poisson distributions. Some assignments were long and useless. He will give you a zero if you are a minute late to a pop quiz but regularly goes over lecture time himself.
Andrew is inspirational and keeps the class engaged! Pros: no need to read textbook, his lecture notes are detailed, gives good feedback Cons: long and hard assignments, graded toughly, and fairly difficult exam
Im convinced Andrew is a lord sent from above to save us all
Andrew tries to be funny and light during lecture. Try to listen in class. He is pretty clear on his powerpoint and give lots of relevant examples so no need to read the text. Content is pretty easy to understand. Overall, a fun class with a great prof!
Andrew has good lectures and allows you to discuss with others about practice problems to reinforce concepts. It still requires lots of practice outside of class on the material, especially after the midterm. Start studying for the final about halfway through the semester so you don't feel rushed to cram difficult concepts as the final is worth 60%
Andrew was a better prof for Buec 232. He made Bus336 a lot more confusing than it is, jumping between teaching applications on excel QM and regular excel, both of which will not be used on exams- Many students don't how to study for exams. Assignments require a lot of work with unclear grading scale, & lecture contains unhelpful group work.
Frostlord was a great prof, one of my favorite at Beedie, and I'm happy to have taken 336 with him. His teaching style is superb as he is aware of "tough" concepts and makes concepts as easy to follow as possible. He also finishes lectures early. Assignments do require a lot of work for little reward. Midterm average was 85, Final was in the 70's.
A very inspiring prof who proves that he can 'empower' his students. Easy midterm, fair final. I didn't do very well on the midterm tho, but I worked extremely hard for the final which is worth 60% and it brings my final grade up to A+! The group assignments were emtremely annoying and time consuming but they are only worth 2-3%
Definately one of the better profs for this course. Assignments require quite a lot of work but are only worth 5% each. First Lectures and then tries providing time for his students to practice on Excel. Walks around and helps! Midterm was easy and avg was high, final was fair and avg was 70. Overall hes funny and his class is a treat. I recommend
I don't regret taking BUEC with Flostrand. Clear lectures/lecture slides--he even gives you extra time to write notes, which is a godsend. Really seems to care about whether you succeed. My main tip: sit at the front of the room and take notes by hand, and read the appropriate textbook chapter before each lecture. If you work hard, you can succeed!
Organized, clear, fair, and amusing.
I found Flostrand to be quite disorganized in an overall decent class. Participation and homework assignments take up 20% of the course and require a lot of legwork. His expectations for exams are unclear, but if you leave yourself a decent amount of time for the final (60%), you can do well. Note he is probably the alternative for 336.
His lectures are very thorough, they cover everything relevant in the textbook and a bit more outside the textbook. You should attend lectures because he gives pop quizzes, and he goes through example questions step by step - which is pretty important to know if you don't want to go back and read the textbook to complete the WileyPlus assigments.
The first 4-5 weeks are relatively straightforward. Fair midterm. 5 Pop quizzes which are usually easy (Don't be late). The later weeks are much more difficult. For the final, practice the later material such as hypothesis tests, ANOVA, etc. The class is curved at the median (not mean) which "must" be a C+. Overall, I think he is a great lecturer.
I really wanted to like Andrew in 336 as much as liked him in 232 but to me, he was just disorganized in his lectures and didnt explain things deep enough. It was bad enough that we used excel in lectures but stuck to pen and paper in exams, but did he really have to make the finals 60% and nitpick the topics we were tested on?
BUEC232 was fun, valuable and difficult but fair. Prof has fun in the class and is fun to watch! He taught us how to fight phone spammers! but don't confuse fun for easy because the math is hard and you have to read and practice to do well. He even uses a cell phone scanner to stop cheating in exams.
He's my prof in 232 & 336; I OWE HIM MY EXCEL SKILLS. He's great in 232, but I think he struggled teaching 336. Both courses, MT was EASY because it's MCQ-heavy but the final was not, because of the long questions you WON'T struggle with if you keep up with the material. If you're looking for an expert, humour, and challenge, he's the solid choice.
Taking BUEC 232 with someone other than Flostlord is like Ben Affleck playing Batman ... just doesn't work out. Andrew is a great prof, gives times to take notes. Really funny!
Andrew is an amazing teacher! I took buec 232 & bus 336 with him and learned the concepts so well and gained practical skills! He is truly a gem, and if you are interested in quantitative analysis courses, he is your guy!
Great Prof! The midterm is heavily focused around his lecture slides majority of it is theory based! The final was very similar to his practice final, the important part of this class was identifying the questions (are they ANOVA, Chi-square, etc.) main point is focus on finding a pattern in questions to do well.
Andrew is a very good professor
I got 70% on the midterm when I wasn't really doing well with the material. However I recommend going over his slides, making in depth notes with reference to the textbook and many practice questions to get ready for the final. I really recommend looking through the examples in the course and book. It really helps a lot to understand everything.
I found Andrew among my favourite professors at SFU. He has very organized lectures. Along with explanation of the important concepts, he walks you through the examples and gives time to try questions in class. A very fair prof. book gives additional clarity, although notes are enough. Beware of pop quizzes, start early on assignments. Great TAS!
Frostlord is one of the best lecturers at Beedie. Time flies in his class with his ability to incorporate humour into his lectures even in the most dry and comlex topics. Very approachable and personal. Both 232 and 336 are 4 credits and makes you work! Fall behind? Good luck. Start his assignments the night before the due date? Don't even bother.
There is simply no one like Andrew, he is the best of the best. I feel like I will remember what I learned in his class for a lifetime! plus he is kind of hot...
This class was really hard but Andrew sets you up to succeed, just follow his steps on how to get an A and you will get an A.
Andrew is an interesting guy. Has ten "team based learning" exercises throughout the course for credit, but they really help to grasp the course concepts. Midterm is all MC so has a high mean. For the final all you have to do is know his slides and be familiar with the LP models and formatting them in Excel, and you will be fine.
Andrew Flostrand is a God-tier professor for BUEC232. He gives enough time to write down the notes from the slides and has enough practice exercises in class to make you understand everything. He has a good sense of humor and therefore makes the classes fun. Exams are fair, but the final is worth 60%. You still have to study hard to do well.
Andrew is not rated this high for telling funny jokes or giving out free marks. He is one of the best professor at SFU simply because his powerpoint notes are concise and his lecture delivery has a perfect rhythm. The course reaches a pretty hefty difficulty in the last month but Andrew will be your best bet in succeeding.
I learned all of my practical Excel skills from him. The TAs are really helpful so definitely ask for their help. Most people didnt do well on the written part of the final because they didnt practice with Excel enough (he clearly stated there would be Excel on final tho). Just do some self-practice with Qs from textbook and you should be fine
Took both 232 and 336 with Flostrand. He's super into the material and explains everything very thoroughly. He'll check if anyone has questions on topics before moving on. The open labs with the TAs are suuuuper helpful and if you go there for help regularly, you will get an A! Fair exams and assignments.
Andrew is amazing, one of the best! Hard work is definitely required, but it all pays off. He made it very easy to grasp statistical concepts with minimal revision, and his passion for statistics made the course way less daunting. Clear lecture slides, and uses in-class exercises to reinforce concepts. He made me love statistics.
He's a solid prof, giving thorough and fair lectures. He warns you of the pace, and gives advice throughout on how to manage his class. His examples help, and he urges questions, which you should ask. He is strict, and his exams can be tough. At times he can bring out a few chuckles, which helps with the dense classes.
I got a D first time around taking it with Andrew, but it was not his fault. I was not ready to work and slacked off. In order to do well, you need to practice, practice and practice. Andrew is an amazing prof and really want to prepare all his students for higher levels stats. I cant thank him enough for being hard on me.
An excellent professor who really knows his stuff . If you attend lectures and keep up the course is easy to follow . The course seems harder than it actually is and he makes his midterm and final very fair . I highly recommend him .
My first professor in SFU, Mr. Frostlords class is clear and funny. Buec232 the course itself is actually hard, and you need to put tons of efforts into it, because the content is just too much, though you may find some pattern later it is still a mass. Good thing is, your effort will worth it.
Always pay attention to his lectures and don't slack off, once you start it's not easy to pick everything up again. Exams are fair, he'll make you work for a good grade but is overall quite reasonable.
horrible class. have to get 50% on an arbitrary section of the final to pass the course regardless of how you did elsewhere. I have never put so much time into an assignment before and they're only worth 5%. prof is convinced everyone in the class is a cheater waiting to be caught.
Andrew thinks that he is a great prof but in reality he is not. He is very unprofessional and made a lot of fun of George (the other prof). Every lecture slides had 5-10 mistakes in it. He had no idea of what he was teaching. I am very surprised how he was chosen to teach this because he knew absolutely nothing. When questioned, he couldn't answer.
Considering this was Andrew's first time teaching this course, he did a respectable job. Had difficulty answering questions, but his lecture slides were an invaluable tool, which only he provides. To de well in this course, you NEED to practice. Be prepared to put in work. Start studying for exams at least two weeks prior and keep up to date.
Andrew did a great job for teaching for the first time. To do really well you must practice a lot and take the time to understand the material. All of the resources are given to you so you can succeed. All of the negative reviews are from people who didn't put in the effort to get a good mark. Andrew did his best and he did very well.
Mr. Flostrand is an OK instructor but he is quite unapproachable and lack communication skills. I would avoid taking class from him.
Andrew will fail you if you don't pass the qualitative section of the exam.
Andrew is awkward and unapproachable. Students also must get 50% on an arbitrary section of the final to pass the course regardless of how well they were doing otherwise.
Please avoid him at all cost if you dont want to mostly be tested on theories/concepts that are of no practical value! His questions dont truly reflect the students understanding and application of the materials as it is heavily based on terminology and theory. Stat course but mostly no calculation questions tested so only memorizing could help
Your average teacher that explains things well. Really need to review his lecture notes to do well otherwise it's a hard class
the worst. he does not care for students at all. seems like he purposely makes things more difficult for people.
Midterm for Andrew was less about students understanding of statistics and the processes and methods used. However more about how he can deceive students using tricks with the english language, getting you to think you are supposed to solve for something that your not. Resembled more of a Philosophy exam than business statistics.
The midterm exam wasn't meant to test how well students performed -- it was meant for Andrew's ego to get bigger. He doesn't allow students to email him. He wasted over 2 hours of our time on the midterm because the system crashed, and he never apologized! AVOID at all costs. I have learnt absolutely nothing in this course.
Andrew has many errors in his quizzes and exams, and does not own up to them. Assignments are not graded fairly and he ignores students who try to confront him about unfair grading.
This prof give almost 1/3 more content than other prof and his exam is very hard. The assignment he gives is very hard and so much work to do!
Pretty much at every turn, trys to make the class harder for you
Cares more about catching cheaters than actual learning. Very inconsistent and goes back on his word A LOT! His exams are more-so about tricking students with the English language, rather than business statistics. Very unfair, unapproachable, and simply not good at online teaching. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
Seems like he actively tries to make class harder, while I totally understand and respect the need for academic integrity he takes it to such an extreme that it makes it difficult to complete under anything close to normal circumstances. His exams are a blantant attempt at trickery and extremely inconsistent. DONT TAKE HIM ONLINE
Paranoid about cheating and makes course extremely cumbersome and tedious to "catch the cheaters". Our midterm average ended up being 55% and for the final he introduced significant measures that were extremely hard to do to "prevent cheating". I think the 55% average shows there was very little if not any cheating.
worst prof at SFU. Never met a professor with the actual intent to make their students do bad DURING A PANDEMIC. cannot explain what a horrible professor he is. He may teach well/ok, but he makes tests extremely hard, to a level where people that had A's when to C's.
He has no trust in his students, which only reflects his own teaching abilities. Made online classes so hard for absolutely no reason. He set entire section up for failure on purpose. Never responds to emails (dont even bother coming to him for help) Over 20 people in my section are reporting him to the dean after our final. Waste of a prof.
A very messy professor, the exam is always a software or network error, delaying the exam but not giving students more incidents
TRUST ME!!! YOU WONT FINISH EXAM AT ALL!!!
Worst prof ever at sfu. The lack of professionalism and empathy was through the roof. He wants to do everything in his power to ensure students fail. Exam difficulty was so high. None of the questions were similar to our practice final and we were given more questions on the second part of our exam without any notice.
Final exam required two devices at a short notice with no accommodations from the university if students can afford it or not/may not have access. Zoom had to be set up on second device to have top half of your body, hands, workspace, and the laptop your taking the exam on in sight. Audio and video on for every student. A lot of distracting nosie
Worst professor ever. No extra time allotted on midterm or final for a great deal of technical issues that was not students fault
Worst final exam Ive taken ever. It was so hard and he didnt even provide us with critical value table
The professor is a devil, not only his teaching is bad, but also his contents are way too much than any other professors. The exam is very, very difficult, and there is a lot of questions that you won't have time to do! What a freak! And he doesn't trust his students at all, and has so many unreasonable requests. Do NOT take this course ever!!!!!!
Took his 232 during the pandemic, exams were difficult and very awkward. the exam environment was extremely uncomfortable a zoom monitoring your actual workspace, and all you can hear is random noises from other students flipping through papers and even yelling. Would not take him again.
!AVOID! unavailable, unreliable, inconsistent, extremely unprofessional, incompassionate especially during a global pandemic, narcissistic. Completely disregards student's mental health, strong work ethics, and integrity. Good luck getting a response back from him bc he was VERY clear he WON'T be answering emails from day one to the end. !AVOID!
Please avoid him at all costs. He is unclear about the guidelines of his assignments and does not respond to emails. The TAs are also useless as they do not respond to emails as fast as they should. This course was a waste of my money and the final and midterm were extremely difficult as the time constraint does not allow you to perform your best.
All the other recent reviews may freak you out, but sadly it's all true (except for that one oddly positive review that said the other ones were unfair). Exams were way too difficult, assignments way too demanding, and Andrew expected way too much from us, especially compared to other profs. On top of that, he's very, VERY paranoid about cheating.
This guy is literally the worst educator I have ever had in my almost 20 years of living. He is unclear about basically everything, contradicts himself constantly, and doesnt care about students at all. All of these reviews may seem extreme but they are true. The average of the final and the midterm before scaling were both fails which sums him up
Andrew is easily the worst professor I have ever had. He over-complicates exams, and as a result, there are always technical issues which he does not compensate for. He takes unnecessary precautions for cheating, but yet can't even take the time to word his questions properly. This degenerate deserves to be fired but unfortunately he's tenured.
The effort Andrew put in eliminating cheating is admirable. If you expect an authentic course, then take Andrew's course, provided that you work hard enough.
A good professor who teaches the material well. Assignments are time consuming but not difficult. Exams can be a bit harsh though, especially in an online environment, and is slightly paranoid about cheating. You have to work hard to earn your grades with Andrew, if you slack off at any point during the semester, game over.
Clearly Andrew reads these since hes now resorted to writing his own reviews. Since hell probably read this (hopefully), I want him to know that the reason he is receiving these bad reviews is because hes lazy, rude, and clearly does not care about his students
I can see Andrew being a good prof in class, but online is clearly not his forte. 4 hour stats lectures were just disgusting. He's super paranoid about anyone cheating on his exam, but on both the final and the midterm there were technical issues that lead to even more time constraints. He makes the class leave their mics on during the exam.
worst course ive taken. For midterms you were with a group of 20+ people in zoom and it was noisy and impossible to focus. There were numerous technical issues as well. Also it is nearly impossible to manage your time on tests because you arent able to go back to previous questions. Assignments did very little to prepare you for tests.
Even though I got an A in this class, this professor just tried his best to make everyone's life more miserable during the pandemic. I understand he did not want people to cheat but his paranoia about cheating was so much to the point it seemed like it was an unhealthy obsession that he had. Workload ramped up in end, don't take this prof.
I can't lie, this was a pretty brutal course. The 4-hour evening lecture was mind-numbing, and the exams were difficult. However, the prof did make it very clear from the get-go that this was going to be a tough (and 4 credit) course that would need quite a bit of work. Some of these reviewers seem to bash the prof for their lack of work ethic.
Andrew was incredibly rude unprofessional all semester. He is pretty average at actually teaching the material, but is horrible in every other way. He also made himself completely unreachable the entire semester. He just seemed to do everything possible to make the class as inconvenient and stressful as possible.
The exams sucked but the assignments were all more than fair, and the topics themselves were easily googlable. Prof Flostrand was also very approachable when I dealt with him (office hours + email.) Only 1/4 of the class usually stayed for the entire lecture (usually 60 people by 8pm), how do you expect to do well in a course w/o showing up?...
I have taken BUS 232 with Andrew twice already. The worst decision I ever made. Take it with someone else. Andrew is arrogant, incompetent, and making it unnecessarily difficult for students to do well in his class on purpose.
This guy is so insecure about what people think of him he has resorted to writing positive reviews of himself. Overall, he knows how to teach and does a good job of explaining topics in lectures. However, this severe insecurity Andrew possesses, driven by an insane paranoia of students cheating his tests makes for a horribly designed final exam.
I would say he is very cautious on prevent cheating is because there are many cheating companies in SFU that helps people to get grades very easily (Like Speedup Education and A+ Education) These guys do sell assignments directly and even give out full exam questions beforehand, his actions are really protecting all of us and please don't blame him
I got A- and this was the worst course ive ever taken. Andrew would probably be a great prof in person but online he is arrogant, rude, insincere, paranoid and tries to make everyones life a living hell. His narcissism and paranoia about cheating are insanely unreasonable. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Wait until its in person if you can. Trust me.
As a person, Andrew is fun. No one seemed to have any problem with him joking around in class so I don't know why people keep calling him out here. He did mention that this class would be intense as of the content and the 4 hours lecture. Indeed he was extremely strict on cheating, which definitely affected the exam formats.
Don't take with Andrew if you want to survive in business courses. He teaches much more course material than other business lecturers.
Lectures are great, and content is straightforward to follow through. Assignments are not too bad as well. Midterm and final are a bit harder than normal it seems like. Has a big thing against cheating, a big pain during midterm/final when taking online due to technical issues (lost a bunch of marks). I think he would be a fine prof in person.
Avoid if you can. Prof. Flostrand added a ton of anxiety and made this already-difficult course, much harder to endure. He takes a "guilty until innocent" approach towards his students during exams and assignments in regards to cheating. It was difficult to become invested in this course when Prof. Flostrand had 0 faith in us to begin with.
I took him in Fall 2020 and it was one of the most challenging courses ever. Both exams had technical difficulties and he decided to scale the class to a C+. The average grade on the exam was a fail meaning below 50%. This prof also had the audacity to tell the spring 2021 class that my semester did bad because we didn't try. STAY AWAY FROM HIM.
Not the best but unfortunately there aren't many great profs for Bus232 or 336. I had technical difficulties but Andrew couldn't care less. I wouldn't recommend him.
He's the literal worst. He uses this scare tactic which is super annoying, and is paranoid about cheating to a whole other extent. Just don't take it with him and you'll be better off. Like what kind of sadist do you have to be to set your students up for literal failure and then flaunt that his class has a low passing rate. Maybe you're the issue.
I am about to graduate, and I have taken courses from many different instructors, and I have not seen a worse instructor than Mr. Flostrand. Most of his fangirls think he is the best because of the 'Frost Lord' meme. A must avoid if you do not want to learn useless theoretical knowledge on business stats.
Hes just so intense and so paranoid about teaching. Makes things unreasonably difficult for an already difficult course and deducts marks on assignments for no reason
Andrew has an obsession with catching cheaters, going to extreme lengths to hinder student accessibility. Be prepared for an abundance of homework, quizzes, and assignments. There is no feedback given for homework or assignments which makes it hard to prepare for exams. Furthermore, Andrew's attitude with students is unemphatic and arrogant.
"guilty until proven innocent" is his general motto. His lectures were extremely boring and didn't learn much. His midterm had technical difficulties and made the whole grading process awful. He purposely makes the class difficult for all students. Would not recommend anyone to take this guy ever, if you do, good luck. NEVER TAKE ANDREW!
Hands down the worst prof I have ever had. Andrew is crazy about catching cheaters to the point where it has become an unhealthy obsession for him, which has led to him creating so much unnecessary anxiety for us leading up to the exams. His exams were also completely unreasonable, and specially designed so that its impossible to complete on time.
Had Andrew this past (Spring 21) semester and he really isn't all that bad. He's a great lecturer and sure his exams are unreasonably difficult but in a curved class this really doesn't matter. If you attend every lecture, understand his examples, do the homework yourself and do all the practice qs in the book you'll kill the curve.
Although classes are technically not mandatory, I find that his lectures are simple to understand and so you don't need to be textbook dependent. However, there are quizzes based on & after every lecture so you might want to tune 100% of your attention to them. He's very responsive to questions asked during lectures about the content being taught.
Took this Spring 2021. Prof is good for all aspects except exam format and unfair marking scheme. We only see one question at a time and can't go back. That's tough for calculation type exam. Marking scheme for finals is brutal. First incorrect answer for the long calculations then you get zero for the rest. Avg for finals is 47% after scaling.
BUS 232 is a hard class no matter what professor you choose. This course will likely be challenging for you but Andrew Flostrand is a solid choice for this class. He takes his time and explains concepts during lectures. As long as you put in the time/effort for this course you will do just fine.
He is content with catching every cheater out there so be prepared for many inconveniences. Post lecture quizzes, weekly assignments and individual assignments are helpful and not hard to complete if you pay attention in lecture and read through his slides a couple times. He responds to all questions and is an enjoyable lecturer to listen to.
I really love Frostlord's BUS 336 class. He is chill, casual, and hilarious. I have taken him twice for 232 and 336, and I understand he is very formula heavy in 232 BUT this will make 336 much easier when you have understand the foundations in 232. I really enjoyed his 336 class and I would say it is fairly easy to excel. 10/10 would take again.
Flostrand's exam is absolutely brutal. He teaches really well but if you are not paying attention the whole time and doing a lot of practice outside of class time, this class is very difficult to pass. However, the mc and long answers were very difficult even for people who studied throughout the semester. Not worth taking him unless you know stats
Professor Flostrand is a good prof who gives very good lectures. The course is lecture heavy so make sure to pay attention and take notes. The prof pauses every once in a while to give you time to finish writing which is really nice. Make sure to get lots of practice since the final was really hard and worth quite a lot.
You know Andrew should be grateful that when I took this course I was an adult because had I taken it freshmen year it would be considered CHILD ABUSE!
Very engaging class. People worry that this course is similar to 232 but it's a lot more practical and interesting. He doesn't respond to emails and defers questions to TAs but is accessible during office hours. Get your hands on the test bank and solution manual. The midterm and final have 40 MC questions and 90% of them are from the test bank.
BUS 232 wasn't that bad with Flostrand. He gives you a great idea of what will be on the final. The averages for our midterms and final were quite low though, in the failing territory... He gives you plenty of time during lectures and spaces out content great.
Worst professor.
Makes jokes, tells funny stories, and prepares students for real world challenges they could encounter in business. CURVED AT THE MEDIAN (C+) so be aware of that fact Personally found the course difficult, but I'm also not the smartest student, so Andrew can't be blamed for that. Overall, Andrews a genuine guy and ridiculously smart prof. 10/10
Really tough but fair. Caring but in a fatherly way. Formulaic but inspirational. Genuinely wants students to excel. Intimidating 1-to-1. Should: Take good notes. Ask questions, seek answers, never stop until satisfied. Practice, practice, practice. Stay curious and strong. Long live Frost Lord! -- Survivor of BUS 232: Intro to Statistical Tortures
