He prepared powerpoints for each chapter, let us ask questions and such. He likes participation and calls on you if you yawn. He made it fun & bearable. He's an approachable professor. Homework was alright not too easy nor difficult. I hardly looked over the powerpoints. I mostly read from the book and took my own notes. He gave us extra credit too
Mr Goffs lectures/ powerpoint come STRAIGHT(word for word even ) from the book which is not so helpful . If you do not read the book you will most likely fail the tests because the whole class is revolved around the book. He did curve each tests and offer 4 points extra credit if you participate in a creek clean up. Be prepared to S-T-U-D-Y!
When taking a science class passion is everything. And I don't think you'll have a professor more passionate about biology than him. He is a marine biology textbook. But he's also a very difficult teacher, he knows the specifics of working organisms. So he wants you to know the specifics. And he does this through hard tests and lots of homework
Great teacher, had him for bio 2120 and he actually cares about his students passing. Go into his office hours and hell let you see all your old tests, and he puts those on the final exam. Also only study from the power point because he doesn't pull from anything else.
Hes the professor that goes off presentation slides that basically reflects the textbook material. So if you like that kind of lecture. Wish he was more hands on with his lessons rather than reading off the slides.
Mr. Goff is awesome. His lectures are entirely from the power point with little variation. He posts those power points online on Canvas. His tests are not too difficult and an A is completely doable. Just go to class and listen to him talk and you will get by.
Very funny professor. Power point presentations is all of lecture. He gives out SO many random facts. I feel like what he covered in lectures although he tries so hard to make jokes that would make them stick. 90% of class changed their bio major after taking him. A bunch withdrew with me included. Always an A student and had an F in his class.
I was very conflicted leaving this review. He is an awesome guy and is HILARIOUS, but his tests are unbelievably hard. I have never studied that much for a course without a grade payoff. It seems that getting an A in his class is nearly impossible but he is an awesome person and makes lectures enjoyable, I just wish the tests were REASONABLE.
Goff is enthusiastic about what he teaches, ensuring that his lectures are fun and never boring. Negative reviews cite his hard tests, but that is down to individual study habits. His slides are just a summary of the concepts, but the exams test specifics and being able to apply what you have learned, so reading the textbook is absolutely necessary
Dr. Goff is an amazing teacher! I took him for both 2120 and 2130. Although, his wondering is a bit tricky in tests, he just does it for our better interests in the future. Try and go to his office hours, so you can look at your older tests and look at what you need to improve on. Please pick him for 2130, you won't regret it, trust me!
Mr. Goff is super passionate about what he does and it makes the class so much better. His lectures are just powerpoints but he tries to get people to participate. His test are hard, but reasonable. There are no surprises on them, study the powerpoints and you'll be good. I definitely had to put the work in to get an A but it's totally possible.
One of the best professors I have had at UNCC in the five years that I have been a student here. Very enthusiastic/passionate about the topic and in trying to reach students into being active participants in fighting climate change. His class is fun and his tests are difficult, yet they are reasonable. I'd recommend him to anyone
He puts the textbook into powerpoints for each chapter. To pass the exams, memorizing all the powerpoints is a good start, but he tricks you on purpose with the wording. He makes bio hard. Don't ask for a review sheet, he'll make the exam even harder. The class avg. scores for each exam were D's. Extra credit? Forget it. Find a different teacher!!
All of his tests were multiple choice and basically from the powerpoint. Make sure you study it in and out and read the textbook to do well on the tests. He also offers 4 points of extra credit for every creek cleanup he hosts (he had 2 for my class) and 2 pts for doing the course eval. He really cares about his class and oozes passion for biology.
Mr. Goff's class is one that I actually enjoy going to because of the energy he brings to class. The lecture can be boring with long presentations but if you pay attention and take notes the class is pretty good. I also believe that he is not only a good professor but a personable person who is welcoming to talk to.
If it werent for the level of difficulty he makes his tests, I would absolutely take his class again. I love his lecture style and he keeps your attention. However, I have never seen so many straight A students (including myself) struggle so much with a class.
His lectures are enjoyable and capture my attention however, he gets super distracted and talks really fast. If you tell him to slow down and explain in a different way he will. His tests are super hard and the wording is very complicated. Would definitely recommend you go to office hours. Studying is a must you won't pass the class without it.
Pro's: Very knowledgeable about the topic (obviously passionate about it), funny, loves talking with students, very helpful during office hours. Con's: VERY Lecture-heavy (personally good for me but not everyone), talks pretty quickly, difficult tests. Make sure you study well, the tests make sure you really get the content at a conceptual level.
Take at your own risk. I took him for 2120 (A) so I figured I would take him again. Big mistake, his exams only got harder & more detailed. Doesn't care if the average is 60. It truly is like he is trying to prove something with his exams. With that being said, he is kind, caring, & passionate about biology and he does offer EC opportunities.
Extremely nice, passionate, and caring. He will not simply give you a grade, he makes you earn it, which I respect. He has a weird fascination with making his tests hard when I think he should focus on the test being well put together and has most of the curriculum on it. It does give extra credit and some easy grades, such as volunteer hours.
I would say this class was as difficult as it needed to be. The tests were hard but he also gave plenty of study materials such as worksheets and study guides. He was always available to answer questions and he made his class expectations known. He clearly cares about his students and is very passionate about what he teaches!
Beware of Mr. Goff he seems like a super cool guy and is very passionate however his tests are extremely hard and way too detailed. He doesn't care at all that his class average is a 60. Every test has free response which he grades harshly and no one ever gets the full points. You'll end up teaching yourself using the textbook.
Goff is passionate about what he teaches and makes lectures interesting. His tests are hard but if you go to class and stop cramming for exams the night before, you will get at least a B. If you're willing to put in the effort, I'd recommend taking Goff for bio.
Easily the most entertaining, personable, and kind professor I've had in a long time; not to mention, he's truly passionate about biology. Can usually be found eating fruit, and shouting enthusiastically about marine biology.
I withdrew from this class. Its clear this guy thinks really highly of himself but doesnt prepare for lecture ahead of time. Its like he has no idea whats coming next on the slide. Take somebody else if you can.
This course is very information heavy, its not the professors fault. If you show up and listen, there is no reason you cant make an A. He does go off on tangents, but he still covers the information needed. This is a lab so it is scheduled to be 3 hours, though it never stays in the whole time. After he's done teaching, just stay back and practice!
Hes aware of the Prof. ratings about him but if you take his intro bio class, says he purposely makes it easier than his other classes. Funny & enthusiastic! Gives lots of opportunities to help grade (open note quizzes outside of class and extra credit). His exams are whats off his study guides and based on memorization. Final exam is optional.
Mr. Goff is one of the best, most understanding professors in the whole biology department. Yes, his tests are hard. But he is accessible outside the classroom and gives you tips and ideas on how to study. He is more than willing to help but you have to go to his office hours.
Professor Goff is nice and engages the class during lecture. He assigns reading quizzes before class (you don't have to pay for the textbook), but they help you grasp the information so he can spend time during class on the difficult concepts. His outlines help a lot for studying for tests. His tests are hard if you don't study for them.
Very entertaining lectures, lots of energy and interaction.
Mr. Goff(Goofy) is an amazing professor. His tests are what you hear on here: hard. If you study ahead of time and attend class, the tests should be no biggie. Hes very passionate about biology and I love that about a professor so if thats what youre looking for, hes your man. The A is not easy but definitely attainable. Hes just awesome :)
Goff (Goffy) is a really passionate, caring, and entertaining Biology professor. He knows biology from A-Z and marine biology is his cup of tea, so if you want to build a connection with him, memorize some fish names.
Mr. Goff kept class entertaining which was important to me because it's easy to get sidetracked in class. It made me want to go to his class, which he didn't take attendance for, but he did do polleverywheres. Tests were easy and he was easy to talk to. I would take another biology class with him!
Goff is an amazing teacher and is fair and understanding of circumstances. He wants to see real effort. However... paper grading is extremely tough. Trying to write a paper the day before will not serve you well... even if you're a great writer. Write multiple drafts and re-edit SEVERAL times, and peer review with a classmate to succeed.
The first time I took this class, with a different professor, it was impossible and I failed. I took it again with Professor Goff two years later and was able to get a 90! Mr. Goff's lectures are interesting and understandable. He is so passionate about Biology, but not in a boring way! It is possible to get an A if you work hard! Highly recommend.
I loved Mr. Goff as a person. He's really funny, sarcastic, and he genuinely cares about his students. His tests were a bit difficult, but it's just up to you to study the material, because he gives you everything you need to succeed. My biggest mistake was not studying for tests, which are the majority of your grade. He's a nice guy though.
I had taken biology before but before his class I was not fascinated by it at all. After his lectures I am completely in love with biology and genes. Also, he finds a way to explain things anyone can understand. Simply amazing and taking him again for biol2130
Professor Goff is an amazing professor, he's funny and sometimes goes really fast but don't get comfortable, he can be a strict grader and his tests are thorough and difficult. Do NOT skip the textbook or his classes, you'll never catch up.
Dr. Goff is a GEM! I had his class early but he was so energetic that I didn't even mind. We had 3 exams + a final. The exams are in-depth so you HAVE to participate and study hard. I advise you thoroughly complete study guides and you should be fine. You can tell he really cares and loves what he does just by his lectures. If you can, TAKE HIM!
No extra credit. Do your work to the best of your ability. STUDY!!! He is a tough teacher and definitely makes you work for that grade. But he is such an approachable guy. He tries to be as interactive as possible online, no question is a stupid one. He will ask for feedback during the semester to help you better, you can tell he loves teaching.
He is a very approachable professor and tries to get to know all of his students. The tests are very hard and you will have to work very hard to get good grades on them.
Goff is an amazing professor- don't be fooled, his tests are challenging is you're unprepared. Skip lectures, and you won't pass. He's very generous with his time during office hours, and has always been willing to meet with me whenever our schedules align. READ THE TEXTBOOK!!!!
Goff was really helpful any time I needed to reach him. His lectures were really enjoyable, and even though you have to be there for all of them, they weren't boring in the slightest.
Great professor and I loved his lectures cause hes very outgoing and fun, but man his tests are HARD and he knows it. Test consisted of multiple choice, T/F, fill in the blank (you have to spell correctly!!), and free response (tough grader). His discussion and extra credit assignments were the only thing that saved me from failing. Good luck...!!
I have taken two semesters of BIO with Goff. He is an awesome professor and passionate about what he is teaching. His lectures are interesting and informative. He give a lot of materials and advice to study for his tests. Paying attention in his lectures is essential to passing the tests. I would highly recommend taking his courses.
Prof Goff made his class very entertaining. I had him for gen bio 2. Hes a funny guy who is really passionate about what he teaches. That being said, he definitely makes you work for your grade. It not too bad though because he makes learning the material pretty fun. I would definitely take another class with him.
Professor Goff is amazing and makes his lectures entertaining and informative. You can tell that he really is passionate about teaching. His test are definitely difficult and you have to study to do solid on them. He gives great feedback on your test if you go to office hours. Quick to respond and wants to ensure everyone understands material.
If you do bad on the exams, you are going to fail. He also is very clear that he does not except late work and will not round up your grade even if you are 0.18 away from the next letter grade. I did well on every other assignment but the exams brought me down so Im retaking the class with someone else. Do not take him if you are a bad test taker!
I took this class for the 1st summer term of 2021. Professor Goff was amazing! The material tends to be difficult (not the professor's fault), and Professor Goff did an amazing job making sure everyone understood it! Advice to students: do the readings, and attend class! Sometimes, the lectures are better than the corresponding readings!
I will be brief. He does not make the class easy, but he does make it fun. The material for the course is challenging, but Goff makes it come to life. He is very light hearted, and is always willing to help. He is the best professor I have ever taken with, and I do not say that easily. Just be willing to put is some hard work.
This is the only prof I have right now that I don't feel a bit sleepy in, he has so much energy which makes his lectures very fun. I am lo0oking forward to taking him in BIOL1221
Professor Goff is a very good Professor, however the courses that he teaches just happen to also be really difficult. if you have to take this class, Goff is going to be the one you want to do it with.
Mediocre at best. He truly doesn't care when the class average for tests sits around 65%. Extra credit???? 2 points back on a test to maybe increase your grade by .1% (grow a plant by seed). Material is very dense and you will have to teach yourself. If you are not a good test taker do NOT take this course with Goff.
Professor Goff is so sweet and really cares about both his students and biology. While a very difficult course for me, I enjoyed every moment despite getting 60s and 70s on every exam. If you know how to study and are a fair test taker, take Goff. If not... still take Goff. You will learn so much :)
Our class average for our test he described as horrible although he included material he had not yet touched on. He was upset he had to give us those missed points back on the test. Made it clear that not many people pass his class. Emailed about a mistake he made on my grades, he waited a week to respond and did not even apologize for the mistake.
Okay he seems nice at first but scolded at our class for not doing well although he practically took a week off and told us to teach ourselves... thennn he put absurd things on the test. He still is an admirable person but the level of anger for his students not doing well and blaming them left me to not fully recommend him.
This class is very hard and complex. Goff could've done better at making his ppt more detailed when defining certain things, but for what he had done the best he could. Gave us multiple opportunities to gain points back on certain tests. He speaks fairly quickly tho even early in the morning. Reading the textbook is crucial! AND DO NOT SKIP CLASS!
I took General Biology II with Professor Goff, and he was amazing! He always slips humor into his lectures! To pass this class, take notes during the lectures and study them for the tests. He typically posts the lecture PowerPoints on Canvas, so study those to! Don't forget to take a look at the textbook either! If you want a decent grade, study!
Professor Goff is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is really good at explaining material and is hilarious. His tests are difficult so make sure you study especially the PowerPoints. Overall, he is a really good professor and I highly recommend!
General bio 2120 is a weed out course so you are going to struggle. There isnt much extra credit, I ended with a 79.4 and Goff refused to round up my grade to an 80 or help me out at all. It is a hard course so you are gonna struggle no matter which professor you have but I would recommend taking it with a different professor.
Professor Goff is definitely an interesting guy, he keeps lectures interesting. You will not zone out often. You definitely learn a lot in this course. Read the textbook before each test, it is essential for you to get an A. The course is ridiculously hard for General Bio II and will require an immense amount of studying outside of class.
Dr. Goff has a good sense of humor and knows how to keep his lectures entertaining. However, his exams are HARD. They are extremely detail-oriented and you must read your textbook to pass. He provides in-class worksheets before exams which help your grade. Make sure to pay close attention to his lectures, take good notes, and read your textbook!!
He is a funny and caring professor which can be hard to find. Even though the material can be boring sometimes, he makes lectures entertaining. The class can be hard especially with tests, but he provides many extra credit opportunities. I found this class to be easier than gen bio 1 since his teaching makes class entertaining
I've actually taken him many times, every single class was heavy on reading the textbook. His lectures are a skim of the textbook so make sure to read the book. The tests cover a bunch of stuff not in the lectures and almost your entire grade consists of your tests. He gives like one extra credit assignment worth 2 points.
Professor Goff is a good professor. His lectures are fun and he has a lot of in class activities to help you understand the material. That being said, you have to read the book if you want to do well on the tests. He gave 5 points of EC and the final was optional. Tests make up 4/5 of the grade and participation makes up 1/5. Overall, fun professor
Very nice and kind professor. Will not round a grade up because that is something that takes away from their job.
Goff was fantastic, I loved his class and his lectures were funny. I recommend studying with the textbooks AND his powerpoints as the concepts will fit together beautifully.
Do not take this professor. His entire class is based on exams and nothing else, when students do badly he complains it's that we don't study enough but it's the fact that his class lacks application. When we asked for more assignments he said it was more for him to grade. half the exams are simply random things that were stated once in class.
His grading system is terrible. He teaches well, wants his students to succeed, but he only grades the exams. Four of the exams except the final were 50% of our grade which is bad because you could do good on the pop quizzes and DB's he has but if you get test anxiety you could possibly fail the class even if you know what you're learning.
Def a professor who really enjoys their job rather than seeing it as a paycheck. His lectures are never boring and they'll keep you awake. He can get off topic sometimes but he makes sure it is material related. He's a straightforward guy and really communicative. Overall, great professor!
Goff is a cool guy but his class is hard. His lectures are interesting but don't do a great job of teaching test-specific material. Read the textbook (free), attend class, and ask questions. His grading scale is 70% tests which is a lot for any class. Overall if you study a lot before an exam, you will be fine. No reason anyone should fail.
He is very entertaining during lectures. He expects a lot from students when it comes to exams. Taking notes during lectures, and studying for exams is a must. He uses study guides that ask for in-depth information. In-class activities will boost your grade. The final exam is optional/cumulative, but it WILL count even if it lowers your grade.
Goff runs an awesome lecture! He is young and engaging, however, exams are hard and carry heavy weight for the overall grade. If you have to take this section, you'll be fine, but will need little extra effort.
Best professor I have had so far. He is very passionate, knowledgeable, and has a fantastic personality. Read the textbook, study the PowerPoint notes daily, and enjoy the lectures. Some people end up withdrawing because tests are too hard. This is only because you have not studied thoroughly, so study meticulously.
He is a great guy and a very engaging professor. His tests are difficult and usually follow the text book, but overall nothing too hard. If you like biology and want to learn, take him.
Interacts w/ class a lot but HIS CLASS IS HARD!!!!! Exams make up ur grade. I usually get As but I'm struggling to pass. Slides are just merely guiding points for his lectures, no actual info except for definitions so attend class if u want to do okay on exams. Class has 5 exams, about 5 hw assignments, 4 discussion posts & 6 hrs of volunteer work.
THE ONLY REASON WHY HE HAS GOOD REVIEWS IS BC OF HIS PERSONALITY! He is undoubtedly a great person but his class is unnecessarily hard. Gets sidetracked a lot & slides are not helpful to get a better understanding. Grade is basically made up of exams. He knows his tests are hard but doesn't care to give hw opportunities to balance out ur grade!!
Mr. Goff is an amazing lecturer, but his exams are so difficult. His questions are borderline riddles sometimes. Attendance isn't always graded, but sometimes he'll have a pop quiz with NO warning, so read the textbook! Also, showing up to class is SUPER important as he expands upon the lecture slides! But beware the exams, they're difficult!
He is super funny but a terrible grader. He does random pop quizzes. Tests count for most of your grade, and are extremely hard. He makes the notes and PowerPoints very simple and the tests very heavy. DEFIANTLY read the textbook and if you want to pass keep up with the syllabus and the semester out line. Your grade will most likely be a C+.
Goff is a great teacher. His tests can be difficult, but as long as you prepare during the days leading up to the exam, you can expect a grade in the B range. Attend class, he will ask questions on the tests that were discussed in class but not in the slides. He gives random pop quizzes to test if you've read the textbook. A fun class to be in.
Professor Goff is an amazing lecturer and makes class very entertaining and dynamic instead of a static reading of powerpoints! However, like others have said his tests are extremely hard. It's almost like he hires the riddler to write his tests. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and he's definitely a professor I'd recommend!
Prof. Goff is a charismatic, passionate, marine biologist who clearly defines how success is obtained in his class; reading the textbook and class participation. Exam questions and pop quizzes are often pulled directly from the textbook so stay on top of the readings. Also, take advantage of the volunteer opportunity for extra credit.
The class content is easy, but he makes tests unnecessarily difficult. Proudly announces when the class average is in the 60s after a "curve". Goes off on tangents during class that don't have anything to do with the material. In class assignments do not do anything for our grades. I personally wouldn't ever take a class with him again.
I've had Goff for Gen Bio 2 and Zoology and he's the best professor you'll ever have here. You'll never get bored in lectures bc he makes them interesting. He knows how to make you care about the material even if you think it's stupid. Tests are challenging but they should be, it's college. If you actually care about your education, take him!
Professor Goff is the person to go to if you want a fun class. You can get an A in them if you just read the book and study a bit. Best professor at Charlotte.
Prof. Goff is a great guy and makes learning fun. Do not worry about his class, it is pretty much an easy A if you read the text book.
Don't let these 5/5 reviews fool you. His class is not impossible to get an A in as long as you ACTUALLY go into the textbook and read the material and study well. It's just that there are easier profs here so if you don't want to to put in the work I do not suggest taking him AT ALL. It is true he's a great lecturer, there are pop quiz's so READ!
Professor Goff is one of the best professors I have had as a college student. He cares about his students and gives great tips for success during office hours. His tests are extremely manageable if you pay attention in class and read the textbook. He often gives points back on exams. He is so funny and lectures are never boring. Take his class!!
While he goes on many unnecessary rants during lectures, he makes connections to material that make them hard to forget and easy to understand. 4 exams worth 80% of your grade. They are a bit difficult until you understand the flow and material. MUST read the textbook alongside lectures, pop quizzes sometimes to make sure it's read.
Professor Goff is a really good lecturer and likes to incorporate a lot of humor into class. He's really passionate about the subject he teaches and genuinely wants his students to do well in his class. Beware of pop quizzes. His tests were terrible though; the questions were unnecessarily confusing and made it difficult to do well on.
Great lecturer, exams can be tough since he creates them himself. He'll do random pop quizzes but will kind of give you a warning a few days before that its coming. He's a really engaging professor and wants to see you succeed. Opportunities for extra credit are at the end of the semester and you have a required 6hr service project, but its not bad
If you actually want to learn bio, take him. If not, don't. This class isn't an easy A, but is far from the hardest bio course youll take. Its hard because he requires you actually learn the content. Pure memorization wont get you by, you have to know how to apply it. He cares deeply about his students. Probably the best professor I will ever have.
Mr. Goff cares about real world issues and teaches them so that you can apply things outside of class. His class isn't something you could learn by just reading a textbook. Sure, there are easier professors, but none of them even compare to him. I can't imagine a professor having a bigger impact, he inspired me to be a better student and person.
Goff is funny but tends to get off track lecture. You'll be fine if you use both his PowerPoints alongside the textbook. There are unit quizzes on Pearson, and random attendance taken. Some comments are insensitive, but open to talk if what he says upsets you. Useless study guides for exams. Need to know how to recall and recognize answers.
Professor Goff is a great professor. Took Zoology with hum and the lectures were fun and interesting. Would take class again with him. Exam are semi tough but if you study and review powerpoints you should be good. He does offer extra credits at time and pop quiz during lecture. Review notes before quiz.
Mr. Goff is a very funny/engaging professor. He does a lot of in class assignments and discussion homework assignments that translate onto the exams. He never reads off his slides; he actually talks to us. He writes tough exams so read the textbook/slides thoroughly. He gives pop quizzes randomly to be prepared by reading the chapter before class.
Prof Goff is easily one of my favorite professors. I took his gen bio 2 class and gen zoology class and I'd take another class of his in a heartbeat. He's really funny and has very engaging lectures. Exams are somewhat challenging but based on the PowerPoints so study them!! When he says to read a chapter do it! (there will probably be a pop quiz)
Goff is the best professor I've had at UNCC. I took him for zoology and he was absolutely amazing. He's the first professor I've seen who actually cares about his students and his lectures were very entertaining. Tests were difficult but he's always available if you need help and he makes it very clear that if you ever need him, he's there for you.
Professor Goff is a passionate, engaging lecturer who genuinely wants students to succeed. While his exams can be challenging, utilizing resources like the textbook, attending class, and using tools like unstuckstudy for study prep can help you manage the workload. An informative, entertaining class overall.
Great professor with a wild personality who makes his class a truly engaging experience; his lectures were always a highlight of the day! However, his is definitely not an easy class and you must work for your grade, especially if you want an A. Be sure to attend every class and study the textbook for exams. Also, gives a lot of extra credit opportu!
Great professor who just wants to see effort from his students. Make sure to attend class, as he regularly gives in-class assignments worth 30% of your grade. Also offers many extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester. His tests are difficult, but read the textbook summary+ review study guide for each chapter and you will be fine.
Goff makes his lectures entertaining, and he's very funny. If it wasn't for his teaching style, I don't think I could have absorbed the info as well as I did. He's truly passionate about the content. He ALWAYS gives hints of what's on the test, and if you do your reading and look at his PPTs and attend class, you'll do well. He's the best. 10/10.
Looking for a professor who actually engages with the class, and doesn't just read off slides, TAKE HIM. His lectures were never boring. It is possible to get an A in this class if you have good study habits. Looking back, the tests weren't hard because he pulled them from the presentation slides. Not a hard class, just study well. PS Extra credits
Goff is a pretty good professor overall. He has a very hyper and extroverted personality for professor. He knows how to engage and get his classroom to laugh as well. Although, his tests are difficult and require intense studying. YOU MUST READ LONG CHAPTERS IN TEXTBOOK to do well on his pop quizzes and exams. This is a reading intense course.
