Understood the material in class, but bombed his exams. They were very hard and confusing. There are quizzes and homework, and no extra credit. He also does not drop an exam score.
this guy is a **** nozzle. tries to be funny w/ no sympathy or much assistance on material. quite arrogant as well i might add.
If you pay attention and go to his discussions you will do well in his class. He's a lot better than most teachers as long as you put in the effort. He's not too compassionate though and barely curves.
this guy is a jerk. its basically a second math course- no concepts taught at all! good luck on the ACS. the lectures are understandable but it doesn't help. the test are unrepresentative of lectures so just read the book. My GPA plummeted when i took this class. totally killed my interest in chemistry.
The exams were really difficult. There were actually a couple of questions that weren't reviewed, nor had I seen before. I recommend definitely not taking this guy. If you do, however, study A LOT. I stress... A LOT. Even when we reviewed with him, he'd review anything and everything, doesn't matter if it was test related or not.
The best teacher of chemistry I ever had! Lectures are easy to understand if you follow it and pay attention during class. Exams are not hard if you go through power point slides and homework sets.
The lectures were very easy to follow and understand, however, they seem very unrelated to the tests. Tests were really hard; it is important to review EVERY way a question could be asked. Tests were definately asked in ways that weren't discussed. Good luck, hard class. If you could take another professor, I highly suggest it.
His lectures were ok, and pretty easy to understand. However, his tests were crazy hard and pretty much had nothing to do with what we learned in lecture. He doesn't curve and he doesn't really care that much about his students as individuals. If you could take another teacher, do it!
Grall's lectures are very clear and understandable. However, his exams are difficult, but fair. The best way to prepare for his exams are to redo example problems from the lecture and extra problems from the book. Also, go over homework. That way you MASTER the material while picking up speed.
Nice guy, isn't too boring, but also does like no demonstrations...all just lecture. powerpoint notes you can print out, tests are straightforward and very similar to the practice tests he puts up. decent amount of hw but its online and not too hard. pretty clear and makes things easy to understand if youre confused/ have questions. tries 2 b funny
Not really a very good teacher. there are much better teachers at the UofA that I would recommend before Dr. Grall.
Hes a funny guy or at least tries to be! However, his class is quite fair, make sure you do the recommended problems in the book he has and you'll likely get an A if you understand his notes and master the homework. ALthough some classes may be worthy of sleeping through, you should still go to each lecture bcuz he explains it well, most things are
AWFUL! Do anything to not take this course. He makes people feel stupid when they ask questions, twitches the entire class, difficult tests, boring lectures. Everything awful in one teacher!
Definetely one of the best science teachers I had so far. Explains everything very clearly. The class itself is not very hard, but keep in mind that chemistry is NOT an easy subject and if you do nothing, you won't do well. If you do the homework, attend all lectures, and study the material a little bit, you'll be fine.
This class is easy if you go to class and figure out the homework. The review sessions are also very helpful. I got an A and i would only study the night before and day of.
I only rate proffesors I really like. I knew my chemistry before going into college and he taught me a lot. The book is crap. His powerpoint notes are great. Very helpful and tests are easy (no suprises so study notes). Overall, great guy and you're lucky if you have him. Goofy in a good way.
Dr. Grall is an all around good professor. He has his moments where he simply just annoys you due to his sarcastic/evil/random sense of humor but he teaches the material well. He writes his own tests and he gives you several example problems in class similar to the test problems. I hardly studied for his class and always got A's on tests.
good professor - knows what he is talkin bout makes his own test - straight forward the FINAL sux
The fact that multiple choice are worth 4 points each on tests is INANE. I hated it, and it's the only reason why I didn't get A's on tests. He was a good teacher though, the multiple choice thing is the only thing I didn't like. All in all, I'd recommend him.
good teacher but this class is HARD. I switched my major after taking this class.
He is a cool dude, he just cannot teach. I wish I could say something positive but I cannot. He is not good. But Do not be afraid you just have to work hard to get what you want
So there's really nothing to say for this professor. He get's an A for effort...that's about it. If you can help it don't take this teacher. Oh and if you love Chem then you'll love the S**t loads of hw due every week. It's hard, get things done early and go to reveiws.

This guy is a good teacher. But, like with most good teachers, you have to work your butt off for the grade! Lectures are very clear and helpful, homework is reasonable, but his tests are HARD! As hard as I tried I could not get an A on a test. The Two Semester, Cumulative, Standardized final was a walk in the park compared to his midterm exams.
The name Dr. Grall is bad news. His lectures are really easy to understand, but the cool thing is they are mostly irrelevant to the homework he assigns, and just barely touches on his outrageously difficult testing material. Even the common final at the end of his class was easier than any single one of his tests. Don't take his class at all costs.
If you print out the lectures before class, and pay attention and takes nots during class, you'll get an A. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I averaged a 97% in this class and I used to HATE chemistry because I didn't understand it (due to a lack of explanation from previous instructors); now it's my minor.
Grall is fantastic!! i love his class and it goes by quick. Yes, his tests are challenging-its called studying! they arent impossible and they are the same tests the other chem 152 teachers give. He is a great teacher and has a lot of energy!
he's good
You need to do the homework, write good lab reports, and study for tests and you'll be fine.
He has a lot of energy and really seems to like the class. But nonetheless, I was bored throughout the semester. I think this is applicable to all gen chem classes, though. If you have a good background in chem from highschool, you'll do fine. Otherwise, you'll need to study and read the book.
He was always clear during lecture, and i loved how we were interacting with the clickers. Its really great compared to first semester. He has office hours were he will go through any problem your having difficulty with.
i didnt have much of a problem in the class. i would have had a low A if i worked harder. The class isnt that hard if you study the stuff ou dont know which shouldnt be alot if you show up to lecture for the love of pete.
i have to be honest, i thought chem152 was hard. chem151 was effortless, but this class, u actually have to study days prior to each exam. If u cram, u will bomb it. If u do well in lab, it could be a life saver even if u do horrible on exams. DONT CRAM! btw, grall is a nice teacher :D
Grall was very good at explaining the lessons and letting us know what was on the exams.Pollard and Grall are the best; get either one of them and youll be good! I got a B in the class and you have to study if you want above a C. Mastering Chem boosts grades A LOT so DO IT!! Attendance is part of the grade and go to lecture to understand material!!
I really enjoyed this class and found Dr. Grall to be knowledgeable and clear in his lectures. This class is certainly not an easy A, but if you go to class, do the mastering chem and study it is possible. He is nice and willing to work with his students. Also, I found his awkward sense of humor hilarious.
the guy is just flying around after three caffinated drinks and i found the book easier to understand than lectures. don't take him for the summer session. I can not say anything good and I know others who feel the same.
His 'teaching' consisted of showing a few equations on the board, verbally explaining an example, then giving you a problem to work on in groups without ever explaining how to approach that type of problem. I learned almost nothing in lecture, and just ended up getting frustrated and hating the subject.
I took Grall over the summer and it was really challenging to balance the lecture with the labs, so don't take class with him over the summer. The class was challenging because his tests were somewhat difficult. His multiple choice questions are easy to get wrong and there are lots of equations so make sure you are on top of your game for the tests
I wouldnt recommend this teacher. He's friendly and funny, but his teaching can be hard to follow. He favors doing group problems and presenting them to the class rather than teacher you all the steps, step by step, to an equation. People who are really good at chemistry will do well in this class. People who are average, or shaky on chem wont.
Alright teacher. Weird guy. He saw a student with an iPad right after it had come out, and he stops in the middle of lecturing and yells, "Wow an iPad" Then apologized and said he had just experienced a "geekgasm". I recommend Lockett for this course.
Not a very good teacher. He doesn't really explain things so you end up self teaching, which isn't easy in chem. It's also pretty hard to prepare for tests because they are very different from the homework. If you are good at chem go for it, if not you might want to look for someone else. Good luck good chem teachers are hard to come by at the UofA
Not the best teacher. His lectures aren't too helpful and he often emphasizes a concept then leaves it off a test. The class isn't impossible but can be quite difficult with a full schedule. I'd recommend taking Pollard if possible
He's really excited about the material which makes the class better. Technically there is no attendance, but the poll/group work is taken for a grade every day, so it's a good idea to be there. The tests are pretty hard and always comprehensive.
Feel like he gets a lot of undeserved flak; test questions are pretty much pulled from past tests which he releases beforehand so all these comments about confusing and irrelevant concepts not being on the tests/homework not like the tests are unwarranted. Even if you suck at chemistry you'll pull off an A, just follow his notes and the textbook.
Good teacher, truly interested in teaching which is refreshing. Class participation is required and graded so make sure you go. Tests are reasonably difficult, understand concepts, and don?t just remember facts. Keep up with mastering chem, it helps final grade.
He spends the majority of the time handing problems out to groups, never once showing how to approach the them. If there weren't participation points I would never come to class as I ended up teaching myself the entire subject. He surprisingly curved a lot at the end.
He really likes teaching and is very patient so it makes you feel comfortable
Loved him! He is super cute, and very helpful. Lectures are clear, tests are fair, what more could you ask for? It was very easy for me to get an A. =)
His lecture style is how I would have liked my 8th grade integrated science class to have been: silly jokes, colorful power-points, and lots of wasted time....basically: useless. That coupled with the fact that they're mandatory it just annoying. Take a different prof if you can. If not, get ready to teach yourself analytical chemistry.
Good teacher. He's funny and makes learning chem as fun as possible. His tests are a little tricky, but he explains the topics relatively well. The homework program he uses isn't optimal, but it doesn't detract from the class. If you put some effort into the class and study problems out of the book before tests, you shouldn't have any problems.
Pretty decent. Explains concepts well enough, is available for help, and homework is pretty easy. Tests are tricky though, so watch out, study, and do the recommended problems.
The book is useless, he teaches concepts that aren't found anywhere and posts them on the test. His tests are tricky and are very different from his study guides. I recommend viewing past exams to see how his tests are worded. Class averge for all 4 exams was a 62%. He is helpful in his office hours but not in lecture. Study his past exams it helps
Grall is an awesome chem prof! He explains the material well, keeps class light with jokes and does lots of examples. His tests are difficult, but he makes helpful study guides with sample problems and book problems to go through. If you go to class, do the homework and follow his advice for studying, you can be really successful.
His lectures aren't too painful, the homework is helpful, class participation with clickers is useful. The tests are medium difficulty, but the practice problems on the study guide are useful!
Pretty good professor, he explains concepts well. This class isn't too difficult if you do the homework and some practice problems. Tests were representative of the topics emphasized in class and were very fair. Overall a good class!
Very arrogant professor. Several exam questions are trick questions that are beyond the conceptual ability of the class in general. Doesn't explain how to do any of the problems and just throws you into the water expecting you to swim. Better off taking Lockett instead.
lectures are valuable, go and you will understand. online homework is very helpful also. make sure to pay attention to his review guides because they are similar to the tests. he does have some tricky questions also on the tests.. but i learned he barely rewrites the tests so find one from the previous semester and it will help. he is a hottie.
He is alright. He knows the material, but his lectures are too general for the topics covered. You have to read the book to understand the material, but he is ok.
Extremely arrogant, knows his stuff though. Doesn't mock students who answer incorrectly but is very condescending in his sensitivity. expresses regularly that if you don't know dates of tests or quizes it's your own fault.
I'm not that great at chemistry, but I found this teacher very helpful. The class takes some work, but he posts his notes before every class and he puts up old tests before every exam. If you take the extra 15 minutes to go through what he offers, it makes the class much easier. Very clear and willing to answer questions, overall a good teacher.
Achem with Dr. Grall was so fun! He tried to make it as painless as possible and really took the time to make sure you know what you're doing. If you're a chem major or looking to get a chem minor, take this class!
Dr. Grall knows his stuff, but he was not my favorite teacher. He went over material very fast and seemed mad when questions were asked. You need to read the book and study with it to help you with the class because the lecture is slacking. Very fast paced, the lab is easy though.
Dr. Grall is a great professor! I recommend picking him if you have prior chemistry knowledge because he does move quite rapidly for students with no chem experience.
Goes over material very quickly, covers about 75% of the material that will be on the exam.
Very condescending, rude, seems bothered when students ask questions or don't understand problems the first time they are shown. Lecture and test material have little to do with each other. I would suggest any other teacher if you aren't very good at chem already
He made me lol during lecture. He made me fml during testing. The class average was 50-60% on test days. Test is easy but you cant study for them all.
Very Nice and the workload wasn't too bad. Gave many tries on the online site for homework, which many of my other teachers didn't do. Great class.
Dr. Grall is very condescending and rude to his students. Would not recommend him. His test average for this semester was a 59%, which is harsh for a gen chem class. Two thumbs way down for Grall.
Dr. Grall is way better than most chem professors. He does go over material quickly, but if you go to class and pay attention, it's not too bad. The tests can be tricky! You really have to watch the wording of the questions and look for random tricks. He's not the best, but defiantly not the worst chem professor!
Honestly not a great professor the curve is somewhat helpful. Tests are very difficult and made to confuse you more than test your knowledge. Take the class with Graham or Weszo, nicer professors and more helpful. He never responds to emails and just a cold dude.
I'm not one to post about teachers on here, (usually I just look up others' comments) but I feel compelled to comment here. He is condescending and RARELY helpful. The avgs on the tests are in the 50s, and that's mainly bcuz you can study for HOURS AND HOURS and still fail due to the fact that the tests are completely ridiculous.
Dr. Grall was by far my favorite professor I've had so far. His class was very organized and although it wasn't easy, I learned a lot in this class. It's true that the test average was a 59% this semester, but he has the biggest curve I've ever seen in a class here at UA. If you put in the work, it's possible to do well, and Dr. Grall is great.
Achem is not the most exciting class, but at least it's straightforward. Grall's tests are almost exclusively reformatted, recycled questions so there aren't any surprises.
Grall is COCKY. He only reads from slides and slides aren't even that helpful. He only knows how to work his fancy computers but doesn't know how to teach. Maybe because he is only a lecturer and not a real professor. His tests are hard even if you study. The curve is really not that helpful.
I'm actually kind of surprised at the rating for Dr. Grall...I had him for 151 and really enjoyed having him as a professor. He made the content very easy to understand, helped whenever needed, and emphasized crucial info. He is fairly cocky, but I just overlooked it. I do have to say though, that his tests are very tough, and make you think.
The previous ratings for Dr. Grall made me worried before the semester began, but he is a fantastic professor. He teaches the concepts thoroughly, is very available during office hours, and keeps you interested during class time. The test questions are written to trick you, so average scores are low, but there was a large curve. I love Dr. Grall.
Dr. Grall is a great professor! His lectures are engaging and he has a funny sense of humor. Class is not too hard if you go to lecture. I finished with a B without going to review sessions and skipping some homework. An A is definitely possible if you take advantage of those opportunities!
Dr. Grall's lectures can be engaging. Overall, this class is tough. The material seems easy but once you get to the test it is not. Sapling homework does not help in preparing you but still do it because it can be a grade booster in the end. A lot of effort is required in this class. Not a bad teacher, but by far not the best.
I thought Dr. Grall was a pretty good professor. He records all of his lectures & posts them to itunesU. Do the sapling work, it can help you with points at the end of the year. Textbook readings are assigned, but he covers all of the material in class. Only catch is the tests are very conceptual and the lectures/homework are not at all.
A tad condescending, but gives ample review material on sapling before a test. Expects you to reach beyond your knowledge base. My advice, pay attention to the homework and lecture problems. Some test questions were verbatim (just value changes). If you want a challenge, take his class.
Looking back, I guess Dr. Grall wasn't THAT bad. He gives you the very basics in lecture and the tests are very conceptual. He is also hard to get a hold of for help, which made everything more difficult. The curve at the end was nice (6% curve) and a textbook isn't all that necessary. I didn't have one and still ended with a B.
Dr. Grall is an excellent professor. He knows his material and is generally very good at explaining some of the more difficult concepts in general chemistry. Always attend lecture, take notes, ask questions and go to office hours. I highly recommend Dr. Grall.
He's really a great teacher and has a great sense of humor. He records his lectures, which is extremely helpful when reviewing for tests. The tests are very difficult but they usually have a very large curve. If you're up for the challenge, I'd definitely recommend!
Dr. Grall was a great professor. He really knew what he was talking about, and he had a sense of humor. His in-class practice problems help a lot. If you study, attend class, and do the homework, you should get a decent grade!
Dr Grall gives crystal clear lectures and he's pretty funny too. He's got that midwest niceness.
His powerpoint presentations are very bland but he gives very good questions to practice on. I had him for CHEM 151 and he didn't seem at all interested but in this course, he is interactive and loves to go in depth about the topics he likes. Very little HW and tests are short and fair. Great class for anyone, especially if you liked Gen Chem.
Chemistry is a tough subject, but Dr. Grall does a really good job at making the subjects clear. It is clear he really knows what he is teaching. Tests are standard and with the curve, most people do pretty well.
Great professor. Fair, helpful, kind, and works thru the material until you get it down. 4 tests are, each is 12%, not hard, just study; he provides study guides and worksheets. Do the hw, actually work thru it, not a lot of it anyway. He is intelligent and moves at a really good pace. Nice curve, more than the 2-5% they said it would be.
Very good lectured. He writes on his ipad so you can see it on the screen without him getting in the way. He also posts his lectures online which is very helpful if you forget something. I also admit he makes me laugh atleast once each lecture. Great guy all around. However, chemistry cannot be absorbed it must be learned. Do the worksheets!
This class is ten times harder than 151. Dr. Grall is pretty good about explaining all the material. Best advice is to go to class. The final is super easy as it is the ACS exam. And a very generous curve. 6-7%.
