excellent teacher, very knowledgable and encouraging.

Andrew has his own ways but is a good teacher
He's a very knowledgable prof, very clear. Marking is tough sometimes.
Pompous know-it-all; very unhelpful in class.
Worst prof i've ever had. pompous ****. Never take him.
He is a hard teacher, so if you think you want to take it easy choose another professor. He is very good though.
Tough but a good teacher
Very hard and unhelpful- a regular jackass- don't take him
He seems very hard the first week. But by the end of the course he was very nice and helpful. He was difficult but I learned so much.

Absolutely brilliant. Passionate about what he teaches, diplomatic, interesting, and insightful. But if you are looking for an easy grade forget it. He's there to teach, to help you learn, not to raise your GPA
He is tough, but you learn a lot from him.
BRUTAL!!!! ARROGANT ****!!!
This is the worst teacher I've ever had ... If you have a choice, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS ... he is very rude and arrogant ... SAVE YOURSELF!
hard but fair you will learn alot if you go to + do all of the work
What a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and kind. I really enjoyed his class. It's interesting, and his marking and comments are very helpful.
He doesn't just hand out A's, but that doesn't make him a hard marker. Especially since he's so helpful and classes are so interesting; it's totally possible to do well. His classes are inspiring and interesting.
Andrew is a wonderful prof. very open to different points of view. He is a difficult marker however, I still say take a course with him. He's great!
If u don't understand poetry, he won't help you. He is very pompous.
Hard, arrogant and prone to writting offence remarks in one's paper.
Andrew is an excellent prof. He's intelligent and engaging. Take his class if your goal is to learn, be provoked to think, and improve your skills. Don't take him if you want an easy grade. He'll make you work for it. He's tough and fair and so worth it.
Andrew is not the easiest prof, but the point to his class is he wants you to think, grow and challenge. I owe a lot to Andrew for helping me hone my writing skills. He's a good guy.
My English mentor. So pleased that I had the honour and opportunity to learn from him. He will be missed when I am finished my schooling. Anyone with any visible interest and willingness to learn will do fine.Don't take his classes if you just want the credits.Take them because you want to learn.
I'm very grateful to Andrew for helping me to improve my writing.
His class isn't easy, but if you pay attention in class & do the readings you will know what you need to for a good mark. Some people think he's arrogant, but really he just overestimates some people's intelligence. He's actually quite hilarious once you get ahold of his somewhat dry wit. Awesome.
If you are looking for an easy pass do not bother with Andrew's classes, you DO have to work in them. If you are looking for a class full of interesting discussions of the material and you don't mind a little work, take one of Andrew's classes, I highly reccomend them.
Andrew is kind of an annoying prof. He likes to talk like he's outside the box, but he's actually totally trapped. I don't appreciate being forced to do outlines and use 10 sources in a 2000 word essay. That is just ridiculous. He writes all over your work, rephrasing sentences to suit his style.
Very helpful, very entertaining, and completely approachable. Highly recommended!
He was my proff when I took 105 for a second time to improve my grade. It was a tough class but he pushed me to improve.
BEST eng prof! Never expected to find someone like this at UCFV. He's very smart, has this captivating english accent that makes everything interesting. The most straight forward honest mentality, he really wants to teach english. You'll feel motivated and confident enough to learn anything with this man. great stories too. take any of his classes
Words cannot describe the respect and admiration I have for this teacher! He is THE BEST lecturer, he has the typical intelligence of a Western European (brilliant). You WILL ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF HIS CLASS.
Prof Gutteridge is a marvel; I took several of his courses as an undergrad, and went on to become a professor myself (though not of English). I credit Andrew with teaching me how to write-- no small accomplishment. His gift for teaching literature is unsurpassed, and his wry humour is sure to amuse the more thoughtful student.
He was awesome. I'd love to take another course with him.
I actually walked out of this class with better writing skills than when I went in. He's awesome at 'finding your voice', as he says, in your writing and helping you improve it.
this guy deffinately knows what he's talkin' about.
I found him to be helpful and approachable. I think some people may find him intimidating at first(which is why I think some people call him pompous), but you should take english with him if you want to actually improve your skills and better yourself.
One of the best teachers i've had. I was really worried about writing essays but he broke it down in a way that i feel confident. He's super helpful, totally knows what hes talking about. You will learn a LOT if you take a class with him.
Andrew Gutteridge is a true professor. He will make you learn, and he is very slack. But a fair warning, many complained about his grading. His grading is not on effort, but your abilities. Take his class if you are majoring in English or want to learn. If not, you will get a P like me (3.00 gpa normally)
Boring class, learned nothing from him. waste money and time
Andrew is a prof unlike any other I have had. His lectures on the Greek and Roman texts are interesting, and I came out of his class learning more than I originally expected! You have to work hard to get a good mark in his class, reading the course material is a must! He is a hard marker, but is willing to help outside of class to work on papers.
Fantastic professor. Truly an inspiration. As a result of Andrew's teaching I actually developed a love for literature and acquired the tools to actually understand and appreciate it. I became a generally more well rounded and sophisticated person, largely due to experiencing his classes.
Andrew instills a love for English in his students and is very interesting to listen to! His lectures delve deep into the material and the interpretations he draws from the works are very inspiring! If you want to learn how to write properly and appreciate English Literature take him!
Love him, and i've always hated english classes. he makes me feel capable. he's truly inspiring
I've never understood how to write an essay or plan it out until I took Andrew's class. He is the most helpful and inspiring prof ever. I've always hated english class and now I have a positive attitude towards it. Thanks Andrew!
Honestly the best Prof I have ever had. Being a Science student, ofcourse I hate English and anything to do with it. Andrew made my view on English classes very different. He is very helpful with writing papers and he 100 percent knows what he is talking about. I would recommend him to everyone and anyone!
Great Prof! Knows information extremely well
I didn't like Andrew at first, but as the class progressed I began to appreciate his insights into literature. He is also just a really interesting person. I enjoyed the class process of negotiating quiz marks. Andrew also really gets you thinking about important stuff in the lit - not just how it's told, but how to react to it.
Fabulous teacher, who demands a lot of his students, but also imparts a lot of wisdom to them. If you're willing to make the sacrifice in time and effort, then you will be rewarded with personal growth and have read some kick-butt literature in the process. I took American Lit 1885-1940's, but the Homer class was my favorite. He knows his stuff.
Not a fan of English, but he is a very engaging prof. also gives a ton of feedback on the work you hand in through the semester making it really easy to improve through the course. I learned a ton. he does give quite a bit of work and will push you pretty hard, but you'll improve. super passionate about what he does.
Hands down the greatest professor I ever have had or ever will have. I cannot describe how incredible his class; its ineffable.
Andrew is extremely helpful. Must attend class and read everything. Fair marker. Quizzes are hard. I would take a class with him again.
Once you figure out what he wants you will succeed, but be prepared to be discouraged and feeling incompetent...I don't really know how I feel about him. A little bit arrogant and opinionated, but when it comes to English he is knowledgeable and he DOES teach you what you need to know.
Andrew's passion for literature made this course interesting! There is a lot of reading, class discussion, and reflection... lots of dissecting of literature, it really is a great class if taken with him!
He is terribly egotistic and arrogant. He makes claims that are inconsistent, erroneous or clearly just his opinion and presents them as truth. He is also a cultural elitist and presents everything in the past as superior to the present. He loves to present university as extremely difficult and 'play god' with his power to influence first years.
He makes the most ridiculous claims in class and presents them as true. He has repeatedly said that human rights are the worst lie we have bought into. He also made the claim that many high school English teachers have never read a book in their life and are proud of it. This guy is awful.
Gutteridge is the best English professor I've had. I took Intro to Short Fiction with him and instead of focussing on technical aspects of the stories, he focusses on the ideas. We had great discussions and he keeps them interesting. He isn't afraid to say things that he's not supposed to and I have great respect for him because of it.
Andrew challenges his students to read and write beyond what they might consider their abilities, and guides them along the way. Spends much time on the meanings of texts (there are always multiple, don't believe other reviews that talk about some sort of "my way or the highway" attitude) instead of historical trivia. You will have to read a lot.
Get ready to read Virgina Woolf and find inferences EVERYWHERE. Only take him if he you are wanting to be an english major, I do NOT reccomend this teacher if english is not your forte (ESL students) and if you are just trying to fill your English 105 quota. This class made me change majors and made me realize I did NOT want to study English.
He is good prof. I guess he can come off as arrogant at times, but he isn't telling us "this is the way and that's it", he is just giving his opinion. You have to read the stories to pass the quizzes and prepare for your essays. If you do those things you will do well in the class.
An amazing man whose words and concepts have changed my life. I think about him alot even though it has been years since I took a class with him
Always loved listening to him and the classes discussions. Great guy, great reads, great class.
Andrew at first gave me the impression of arrogant, to the point where I wanted to switch out because I knew he was going to be difficult. Upon going to class, I left with insights greater than what the course was about if you take in account what he is saying and apply it to your daily actions. Makes you ponder much of how you spend your existance
His older age and background (Manchester, England) might be the reason for his culturally elite views; however, overall I found him to be a remarkably enlightening professor. His lectures are engaging and filled with biblical allusions. Even as a non-religious person, I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Would take a course with this professor again.
Originally I was nervous to take Andrews class for Eng 105, as I am not the strongest writer, but if you do the readings, you will do good on the quizzes. Very approachable, if you build a good relationship- he will go out of his way to help you. May not be the most entertaining class, but I learned the most compared to others.
Andrew is awesome. In our class, the first week and about the first three courses are basically philosophy 101; he teaches about life and what it means and why, the who, how etc. But his lessons are great, his idea of having 4 people to a table, one recorder, one speaker, and two other mini jobs is amazing, I recommend him highly. 9/10
Andrew is very passionate about English and literature. This course was content heavy compared to some of the other 105 classes. Be prepared to feel like you know nothing. He will tear your essays apart. He is very knowledge so you will learn how to be a better writer.
Lectures were great, really interesting insight. Everything you need to know for the course is in the lectures. Do not take this class your first semester! I found it super intimidating and it turned me off of taking more English courses. Also, no information is given on the final which is a little ridiculous.
The hardest prof that I have had so far. He is a tough but fair teacher. He truly cares about his students and gives great advice and feedback. His experience and knowledge can sometimes come off as a bit elitist at times, but the things you can learn from him far outweighs all the negatives. Work your butt off and get a good grade. Simple
Professor Gutteridge seemed very intimidating at first but once the class actually begun it was great. He really helps you to understand the proper way to write papers without as much stress. He emails back almost instantly and gives excellent feedback. Lots of reading but overall one of my favourite classes and continues to help me in university.
Loved Professor Gutteridge! He really makes you work for your grade, we had 3 in class essays, daily essay readings as well as a final paper that he teaches you the steps throughout the whole semester. I still use what I learned in his class in my other classes. He seems tough at first but is a really smart and caring guy! Would recommend 100%
Easily one of the best profs I've had. There are a lot of readings that you have to do that you will be tested on, which are not that difficult. There is one big essay that you have to work on throughout the entire semester but he teaches you how to write properly and is very approachable and gives amazing feedback. 100% recommend taking his course
Very disorganized, wastes class time on pointless things that won't be worth marks. Very non-specific about what he looks for. Goes into detail about one essay then tests you on one you have not gone over. Pointless class, taught myself more than he taught me. I always did very well in my other classes and English, I feel dumb in his class.
Andrews lectures are interesting. There were 3 essays. If you are a poor writer you will not do well in this class. TAKE NOTES! All the information you will need for the essays comes from the in-class notes. He doesn't write anything down, no powerpoint or Blackboard. Nonetheless, he is very fair, answers all questions, and is brilliant!
It's not clear what he wants. His expectation in the syllabus is that you write something ground breaking to get an A, but stray too far from the ideas he gives you in class, you lose marks. He says that he wants us to explore ideas and find meaning, but you lose marks if you try. For someone who teaches English, he's not good at communicating.
Andrew was one of my favourite profs. While he makes you work for your mark and is a tough grader, he made me a better English student and writer. He was very easy to get ahold of, he gives the class his cellphone number and is willing to answer questions at anytime.
Andrew comes off as a very intimidating person and makes it clear on the first day that he's "not an easy professor." However, he will make you a better student and a better reader as well as more skilled in analyzing and interpreting pieces of writing. Some classes you will do nothing but hear him speak about a reading for hours. Not easy but good
Acts intimidating to the point where some students droped his class. At the first class he made everyone question their decision to go to UFV. Extremely condescending to the point of being rude. If the english is your second language I definitely do not recommend him.
If English is your second language, never take this professor. I repeat. NEVER! He expects all the students to already be A grade authors. The homework that is given is very hard to do. too much course load. if you are just average at English, do not take this prof.
You learn a lot of key concepts in his class however, it was difficult to figure out what he excepts on the essays. Probably one of the hardest classes I have taken.
You are marked on your attendance and the exams/papers are exclusively on in class content. DO NOT SKIP. Sometimes he gets a bit philosophical so it's hard to follow but if you can at least kind of follow what he' saying then you're good. Take notes on EVERYTHING. He will know if you use online sources for papers and he doesn' want that. Take notes
Andrew is the best instructor I've had at UFV, and perhaps anywhere else. He's intense and highly intelligent, but he also respects his students and clearly cares about their success. He cured my distaste for the way literature is usually taught by discussing actual meaning and RELEVANCE to a normal person's life, and I cannot recommend him enough.
NOTES NOTES NOTES NOTES. If you take him, meet people in the class, get contacts and meet to share notes, he talks, s l o w & fast. you can't write everything. final paper is on, the notes of 32 stories/poems, we read. If you want to improve your writing, it's a good class, but don't expect to walk through it.
In this class, Andrew talked at us for hours with little class discussion. He chose the theme of Secular Existentialism as a discussion point for all the poems and books. It was depressing. We were not allowed to use outside sources and could not write about anything he hadn't said in class so we weren't able to have different thoughts from him.
Professor Gutteridge is hands down the best professor I have had. Audacious and cleaver. Lectures are engaging, he is very knowledgeable and open to discussion. He wants you to take responsibility for your own learning. TAKE NOTES: assignments are based off of in class discussion about readings.
At first, I wanted to drop this class but as the course progressed I could see improvements in my writing skills. Grades were based on written work. Do not worry about getting it "right", it is better to have an original idea than to interpret the material perfectly. Do not repeat yourself, be clear and confident in your writing even if you aren't.
If you want to improve at English, Andrew is a must-take prof. Take him often and early in your career, he will teach you invaluable skills. No outside sources are allowed simply because hes smarter than them, and often will spend class time pointing out why they are wrong. Profs like this are rare. Take advantage.
Andrew is an excellent English professor. His approach to teaching places you in control because he doesn't ask you to search for outside sources. He is interested in what you have to say about the material which can be a transformative experience if you are willing to immerse yourself in the material and his lectures.
Although the amount of work given was too much for a first-year course, and I did poorly in his class, he really inspired me to become and better writer and reader. His classes were too long, and my attention span was easily lost. He should not be teaching at UFV (lol). To me, he is a genius and should be teaching at a better university.
Prof Gutteridge is 'old school', believing university's purpose is the exchange of ideas, not a commodity to help you get a job. He re-ignited my faith in education and interest in literature. Not afraid to set high standards for attendance, note-taking, and original thinking. UFV is lucky to have him on their faculty.
Definitely not easy, very high expectations and lots of work. Consider taking 105 first. However, I have gained from this course than any other I have taken, and despite the challenge, I would love to take another course with him. INCREDIBLY easy to communicate with. Some say he's pompous, But I didn't find that AT ALL, think its just his accent :)
Very interesting course. Learned a lot about literature as well as how to write. Can talk long occasionally but usually interesting.
This man is the GOAT. Enjoy retirement Professor Gutteridge!
