prof. hacker was a GREAT teacher. VERY INTERESTING. he only gave 2 papers and there was light reading in the class, but he was just funny, if you like being called on to define things like "tree" and "jelousy" (and random words he made

Crapy teacher older than my grandfather. Thinks he is always right. wouldn't recomend him.
Good Prof, a bit condescending at times, but will help you outside of class, if you ask. take home tests. be open minded and FOCUS on topics he offers, and you'll get an A, bring dictionary to class. he teaches by discussion, so be prepare to answer Qs.
Found this site and went back to rate my Professor. Took Hacker back in 1986 and thoroughly enjoyed his class. Teriffic professor. Highly recommend you take his class before he retires.
He is a very intelligent individual. Someone who raises very good issues and makes you think. You must participate in this class and get involved. Professor Hacker is a man I have come to respect and appreciate. It weird learning from a man who has written books and has had a successful career.
My favorite professor so far, but he FORCES you to participate, which takes some time getting used to if you're like me and you've spent all your time lingering in the back of every class not speaking. The participation makes the class great, though, because you've gotta think and you've gotta be on your toes the whole time. I recommend him to all.
I had taken both his classes he is a very smart man and you can learn a lot from him, he makes you think outside the box, and make sure you show up for all his classes because he counts the amount of days you miss and im sure it affects your grade
a real old-school, ivy league conservative. teaches by asking questions socratically. really makes you think, but is demanding. unpleasant but fair and honest.
i loved prof. hacker. Though some people may not like him i thought he was very sweet and always willing to help out his students. He might be a little tough when it comes to grading but all in all a must to take when dealing with poli sci classes.
He makes class so interesting that you don't want to miss it. He is easy to talk to & will help you with anything you need. All he asks in return is that you come prepared to class & participate in the discussions. He is brillant & I would recommend taking any class that he teaches. His workload is tolerable & he provides all the materials needed.
He's a very intelligent professor. He is also famous for his books. He makes you think and its so cool because you think about things you never imagined. His class is interesting, though a little nerve wrecking because he randomly calls on you in class to answer a question and participate so be ready. His papers aren't that difficult but they aren'
Easy class-- the professor is very intelligent and interestingt--I highly recommend him,!
He's weird, but veryyy smart.

The greatest professor Queens College has!! An AMAZING intellectual who made me think like no other person in my entire life. He's my advisor and I recommend that anyone who's looking for an education take him. If all my classes were taught by Prof. Hacker I would never leave QC... No one comes close to him! I also recommend the books he's written!
He has the nerve to complain becasue i didn't take notes! Does he seriously expect me to copy diagrams of manhattan roads, murder suspects, census statistics and ****on my notes, because tehre is no way i ever wiLL

Andrew Hacker is probably the best professor at Queens College. His class is interesting since he encourages students to think about political theories, theorists, and sociological data relevant to public policy. There is no textbook, but a packet of quotations from Hamilton and Jefferson, which he interprets. 2 essay exams-midterm/final, 2p limit

I hated this class. i could never give him what he wanted in the essays. his classes were boring and had nothing to do with the midterm and final questions. i don't recommend this class at all
This was an extremely challenging but eye opening class. From the beginning of the lesson he captivates you. It's more of a lecture class but his teaching style is poetic the way he gets you to look at a subject from a whole different perspective. He was one of two professors that I remember, he's the authoritarian on Dateline NBC for a reason.
Hacker is a slick guy: He makes his class easy so that he can trick students into thinking all college classes, especially other psci classes, are like his. Then, when the semester ends, he'll mail letters to all his students congratulating them and recommending them to major in psci. He basically tries to lure ppl into the useless najor!!
Hacker is good. His 50 multiple choice question midterm was easy but his 100 multiple choice question final was a killer. I managed to pull a B+ because I did well on the 15 page term paper and got b's and B+'s on all 25 in-class presentations. Overall, he'll work you, but the stuff is necessary for future courses
What kind of prof are you? You teach nothing at all and then stick me with a B-. You are a nightmare.

He seems to think that FYI students should make him their whole life and read through a bunch of old quotes and learn definitions of words he makes up. His course doesn't prepare anyone for anything. He is a complete waste and the highest grade he gives is a B+. Why would anyone take this man?
He's actually a pretty good professor. Once you get past the fact that you're not really learning any poli sci, you'll be fine. He takes his class really seriously (even though no one else does), and he REALLY hates when anyone is absent. Also, don't take this class if you are concerned about your GPA, cause chances are, he'll ruin it.
He imposes his views on you in such a way that freshman will not notice that they are having a slick professors views imposed on them.
Hacker, a firm believer in Jefferson's views, claims to not like the idea of "grades" in colleges. In that case, why doesn't he give all of his students an A just to help them out?
Hacker is not a secret. He uses the classroom to rant his views of the world. Of course, if you agree, it would be great. If you not agree, drop the class. Hakcer is marx-communist. google hacker's writings. like watching PBS, CNN, lots of these data is now free on the internet.
He gives grades higher than a B+. It is a waste for him to teach freshman because most of the points he makes go over freshman heads.
His texbook costs only 9 dollars and you buy it form him. He's not that bad, just make sure you answer with clarity when he randomly calls on you. Oh and he takes attendance very seriously. Overall he's not so bad.
I went into this expecting to learn...about American politics and gvt. But don't be fooled, that's not what its about. Tip: Participate in class and don't wait to be called on to comment, this is definitely what he cares about most. I can't help liking him despite feeling like I was kind of deceived about the subject of the class. Easy+interesting.
Not at all what I expected. Interesting class. Semester is spent analyzing A.Hamilton and T.Jefferson. He goes hard with attendance when you are not present he makes you fill out a blank slip as to why you were absent. Textbook is $9 and is provided by him. Just go to class on time, participate A LOT and this class will be a breeze.
Makes you think; course is on Hamiltonian and Jeffersonian vision but applies it to our world today. Prof does give "A"s. Not a lot of written homework but a lot of thinking and participation. Attend ALL classes on time. Prof used to teach at Cornell Univ. He's extremely helpful and will advise students on topics and courses within PSCI
Ego alert! He's definitely bearable, though. Definitely a pretty easy class. You actually HAVE to show up, and will make you wait outside when you're later; also hates when people use the bathroom in class. If you show up, you'll almost definitely get a good grade. No textbook. This class is worth taking.
My first semester of college I couldn't have had a better professor, his class was very interesting. Attendance is very important to understand the discussion, not a lot of work but more thinking, not for those who have a hard time with analyzes. His class will make you think, question, and learn to choose your words wisely, good luck.
Andrew Hacker was professor in one of my first courses at Queens College in 1975. I liked that he was an intellectual but really had no idea what he was talking about most of the time. I graduated first in my accounting class but he gave me the worst grade I got at Queens College.
I arrived in Professor Hacker's class as a freshman directly from four years of an all girls Catholic school -- I was ready to listen to a lecture, instead I was forced to think, participate, and debate. Culminating in decisions about what I felt was right and wrong and what wanted in life! He is not only a great professor also a great man.
There is no reason you cannot get a good grade if you show up for class. He's strict on attendance & hates when people are late or need to use the bathroom. If you stay in his class the full amount of time, you'll do fine. He's very nice but be warned: he likes to randomly call on people! Overall, he's a good professor and I enjoyed his class.
Attendance is a must. He is very difficult to deal with if you miss class often. That said, everything else is simple. Sometimes the class moves at a snail's pace... Midterm and Final are take home essays, under a page each. A few in class quizes on vocab and random stuff, nbd. He's a good professor for an intro to poly-sci. A
More of an american sociology class than than an American politics class. There is NO WORK in this class besides a take home 1 page midterm. He's very vague about what he wants though.
I had Prof Hacker in 1982. We had to read a (small) book a week and write a brief report on it. One time, I barely read the book and "threw together" a report. Rather than give me a bad grade, he handed it back to me, called me on it and gave me a second chance. Good man.
Dr. Hacker is perhaps one of the finest professors CUNY has on its faculty-maybe in the U.S. If you're not too keen on ponding social issues and their underlying assumptions - keep step'n, his courses are not for the faint of heart. Love him or hate him, Dr. Hacker brings depth, perpective, and intellectual challenge to the I.Q. curious.
Professor Hacker is one of the most intelligent professors I probably will ever have. Even though he teaches a 100 class, don't think that your mind won't be worked out. He really opens your mind to thinking about the world in a different way and THAT is what separates good teachers from amazing ones.
this class sounds easy considering there is only 2 short papers but he is EXTREMELY confusing in what he wants in the paper. He is willing to check your work, yet offers NO advice on how to make your work better. You just have to ask classmates and do what you think is best, and hopefully he likes. I got an A-
Easy class with only 2 papers to write, but is extremely vague in respect to the content he wants in them. Attendance is extremely important to him and locks the door as soon as class starts forcing his students to stand outside until he wants to let them in.
So, I won't lie: the man is brilliant, and his CV is impressive. However, he is terribly unhelpful and vague and speaks about topics solely in anecdotes. He gives two papers (a midterm and final) but is vague as to what he wants in them, and never really clarifies anything. Smart man, horrible professor.
A true friend.
He's really vague about assignments he gives. He wants you to figure everything out. His big question is "why?" Assignments every class. No test just a bunch of analyzing and writing. You have to be on time and attendance is a must.
Get ready to THINK. This man uses Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson vision and apply to this century. First of all, Hamiltonian and Jeffersonian words were all so vague that you can apply them to ANY situation. It is up to the READER to decide how it fits in to your beliefs. Dont tell me they knew the issues 200 years ago.
This man is brilliant. However, his assignments are VAGUE to say the least. Not much to study in class as most of the talk are about A. Hamilton and T. Jefferson. He WILL make you stand outside of class once he closes the door. Be prepared to use a coin to gently knock on the glass or stand there until he thinks he should let you in. STAY AWAY.
as boring as it will ever get. hes a incredibly smart man but he just doest teach the topic he was assigned which is PSCI... he speaks nothing at all about the presidents or the topic.. he just goes on and on about random as hell things that no one cares about and doesnt have to do with anything.. take home essay midterm and final.. thats all-hard
Amazing class, such a bright guy, very interesting, best class I ever had, really every single lecture, highly recommend- you will learn a lot!
This bright man named hacker was really hard to understand. We spoke about hamilton and jefferson and really didn't learn anything. Their is bring home midterm and final which isn't too hard, but mr. hacker is not the easiest grader. Would not recommend.
AMAZING
At first, you are going to feel intimidated, but after awhile you start to appreciate him because he gets you ready for the real world. Never be late to his class because you will feel like a 5 year old when he makes you sit in the back. Always participate, he won't shut you down if you're wrong. When the semester is over you will be 10x smarter.
Hacker is really brilliant. No homework except read some sentences and define some words. Participation is key--he calls on you but it's simple questions and answers. The class really works your mind and makes you think beyond what is on the page. It is American Politics but all we talked about was Hamilton & Jefferson, easy class. Hacker is funny.
Brilliant professor. Has amazing knowledge and is extremely clever. NO homework is given, but you will be excepted to read assignments and will be called on in class. Only gave us a few take home exams, and as long as you paid attention in class, they are a breeze. Learned a lot and enjoyed the course.
Must show up to class and arrive on time, participation is key for a good grade. Your expected to look up words in dictionary for HW. He gives a midterm and final which are take home essays, page or so. Show him your rough draft because he is very specific with what he wants, if you do so you are guaranteed a good grade. His class made me think.
He's a really great professor. He put time and effort into learning everyone's names. You'll see after a few days that he's really a funny guy. Come to class everyday ON TIME he values your time and his
He hardly teaches politics, or anything else for the matter. His class is basically an hour long thesaurus lesson because all he does is choose a student after another to redefine words from his readings (which are broad to begin with). His teaching style is way outdated. No syllabus, no computers, no clarity. Save yourself the time, dont take him.
He is a very smart man and has very impressive credentials which you can easily find by googling him. His teaching style however is very confusing and he is very vague with his assignments .This class is supposed to be a political science course but it felt more like a philosophy course. If you value your sanity please do yourself beware.
This class is an automatic A- class pretty much. if you work hard or a not at all you'll end up with that grade. take home essay midterm and final and that is all the work. 1.5 page MAX for each. avoid if you don't want A-, take if you're lazy and an A- is good for you!
I personally enjoyed his class, but he's definitely not for everyone. If you're the type of student who likes things straightforward and out of the textbook, don't take him. He really makes you think. There are 2 take home exams and each are only 1 page long. If you follow directions and provide your own insight beyond class discussions, easy A.
Professor Hacker is very judgemental and will humiliate students In front of their classmates. My first day of class, I arrived 5 min late because I couldn't find the room and He had the whole class laughing at me. That is just one example. I wouldn't recommend taking him. He makes the whole class experience stressful.
Funny guy. A bit strict as he will make you wait outside if you're late. The class really is more philosophical than political. Sometimes the points he tries to make are unclear because many topics discussed seem irrelevant. Overall, funny and calm elder. Only a midterm, takehome final, and participation are key to succeeding in the class. Show up!
AMAZING.
THE ABSOLUTE G.O.A.T, just come to class on time and listen to him during lectures. Makes everything easy to understand, and doesn't assign direct hw but expects you to read ahead. Once again don't come late to his class.
This course is officially supposed to be about US government and politics, like how our government and politics work. However, professor hacker talks only about philisophical Hamiltonian stuff and the readings for this class were just excerpts from Hamilton's Federalist papers, sometimes going off topic. Also humiliates people for wrongdoings.
The class is supposed to be about political science, NOT about sex, abortion, religion, or philosophy heavy on human nature.
If you're late to class he would make you wait outside and write down why you're late, and in the process you will miss some information. Also, if you try to get up to go to the bathroom he would tell you to "take your stuff with you and don't come back because you'll disturb the entire class." Really?!!
First off, if you can't make it to 98% of the classes, do NOT sign up for this course. Hacker is a stickler for attendence and class participation; he will randomly call anyone from the roster. Make sure to read ahead as the homework assigned is usually very vague and he does that purposely. He is strict, has a big ego, but thought provoking.
be on time, be ready to get called on, and be ready for controversial topics to be aired. he is a huge stickler for punctuality, but i liked the old school mentality he have. this is one of the few classes that had me on edge and constantly thinking, his tactic of calling on people at random genuinely kept the class engaged.
Very strict teacher. He doesn't use a textbook and provides you with excerpts on the Federalist Papers. He also calls on random people and expects you to read up on the material beforehand. Though, he didn't really give homework.
Prof Hacker is amazing -- one of my favorite profs -- he is clear in his expectations and he is an academic marvel. wish i could take him again!
he goes on a lot of tangents that you would think are not important to the class but he quizzes you on these tangents. The class has very little to do with political science rather it is about what he thinks Hamilton and Jefferson's views were
for a psci Prof he spoke very freely, he didnt seem to care about anything he said he would make politcally incorrect comments a lot, very inappropriate for a teacher. no specfic grading policy he only random quizes and graded them with his comments. and thre was a take home final which he gave very littel information on.
I thought I was taking a politics science class, but this is a philosophy class where he only talks about Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.
He gives pop quizzes, and if you're absent for them he will literally penalize you. I was 'absent' the first couple classes due to late registration and he scolded me for it. By far the most rude, degrading, hateful professor. Does not seem fit to teach anymore, does not care about his students. Does not have proper syllabus to follow along.
Definitely more of a philosophy class than an American politics class. My semester took a turn from in-person lectures to typed out lectures sent through email which definitely did not help. I could not say that I learned anything from this class and was 100% disappointed in it. Also once he shamed a guy for getting up to use the bathroom.
This class was very confusing and unecessary, he teaches more about Hamilton and Jefferson's veiws than he does about politics. He also goes on tangents about things that have almost nothing to do with the class, and then he quizes you on the tangents. He treats his students like children, and tends to be very disrespectful at times.
He is very knowledgeable about political science, however when it comes to asking questions or disagreeeing with him you are always in the wrong. Had some challenges and difficulties come up while taking his class and he didn't care at all and still expected me to come to class. Gave homework and essays topics that required you to writeitfromhispov
Professor Andrew is a very interesting professor. He knows what he is talking about for sure but he is not a traditional professor. His syllabus is a bit confusing and he didn't have a midterm. He likes to talk about Hamilton and Jefferson a lot, so be prepared to look at their works. He can be rude at times, and funny at times.
He is pretty rude to be honest, he doesnt make much sense most of the time and if you dont do things his way you might just get yelled at by him in front of the class. He makes asking simple questions like sir can you explain this or when is the assignment due again? very nerve racking. Hes very different to work with.
If you think your high school teachers are rude, boring, and unaccommodating then Professor Hacker is about to double that. He treats you like you're a stupid child, but your're always expected to somehow read his mind. There's no syllabus and you have to guess what the assignments are. Please for the love of god don't take any of his classes.
He's not the worst nor the best in my opinion. If you show up take notes and pay attention you'll be fine. Just know that he does like to call on you randomly and everything is based on what is talked about in class. Also, make sure to show up on time. He keeps the door closed and will ignore your participation if you're late.
He seems difficult at the beginning. But, he gives good grade though. Just do the assignment and attend the class. I recommend him for PSCI 100.
Andrew Hacker's class was not difficult. However, his character makes the class nearly unbearable. This man is 94 years old, and it very clearly shows during class. He is forgetful, rambles on about nothing, and is very uncooperative. He is rude, and makes the subject of polisci so, so boring. It was an incredibly easy class, but a horrible prof.
He was a great professor , I learned a lot in his class, He is older, but he has so much to share and his class was easy just engage in the class, He gave 8 assignments my semester all fair and easy.
Professor Hacker is very interesting; he is a much older man, so patience is needed for how slow he can be. He calls on students based on his list, and only discusses the ideas of Jefferson and Hamilton. Straight forward assignments if you do research the quotes he assigns, everything is on paper, and simple final exam. Boring class, but easy A.
Hacker's class is thought-provoking but strict. Attend every lecture, engage actively, and use resources like Unstuck AI for study prep. It's a challenging course, but worth the effort.
Rambles and goes off on tangents... doesn't have a coherent syllabus... likes to target certain individuals in the class to pick on throughout a semester to try to make an ass out of... seems to be motivated by personal political bias more than curriculum. Not an educator, more of a narcissistic activist.
Honestly Professor Hacker wasn't difficult at all. He'd pick on kids on who used their phones and wouldn't participate. He tends to ramble on about pointless life stories. If you need the credit, make sure to participate, stay attentive, and show up on time. He locks the door the second you're late and you have to knock. Don't take him for fun.
Don't understand what his class is talking about, write out some abbreviations and ask what each letter is, give little information and don't know how to take notes.
Embarrasses, shames & demeans students. No syllabus, no structure, you have 0 idea what's going on. We talked about Taylor swift, ab*rtion, abbreviations(??) & everything else other than polisci. AVOID. He is VERY disrespectful. If u r 15 sec late/u leave the room, he'll lock the door & won't let u in. I dreaded this class. Huge regret. AVOID.
Huge regret.AVOID!
