Extremely challenging. That said, the degree to which I refined my essay-writing skills as a result of his direction is astounding. I came away with a hard-fought A, as well as the ability to create a cohesive, well-constructed argumentative essay.

This guy is a jerk! Thinks he is the funniest man alive. Most of our class dropped. I should have left on the first day. Take anyone else but him.

This guy is TOUGH!!! If you think you might be a good writer, ok take this class. If you just SUCK at writing... SKIP THIS CLASS!!! Although he is a tough grader, he is a good teacher. His jokes are somewhat funny and his lectures are pretty profound.

If u're Asian...do not, i repeat, do not take his class, he'll laugh at your mistakes but one thing that helpful was his jokes. Sometimes it's funny but sometimes....NOT!!!!!

Good speaker. Wrote the textbook for the class (seriously!). Expects results you to do what he asks. Don't "wing it". Over half of the class was gone by the time the class was over, BUT the guy TEACHES and you will LEARN something.

He's a pretty good professor. Most of your grade is based on 3 essays (usually in the 5 and 8 page range). If you want a good grade in the class, I suggest biasing your papers a bit. (Hint, he hates guns...)

A lot of work in this class. Weekly essays (500+ words) are relatively simple, but time consuming. Its the mid & final exams that'll kill you so watch out for those. Definitely a knowledgeable teacher, though he looks like Duran Duran !!!

If you are good writer, I recommand him! He really cares about your grammer and your paper has to be kinda perfect. "Weekly essays" (he grades only based on papers). But he respects what you wrote and makes you think about what you are writing.

It's not really a hard class, just time-consuming. But I happen to be a "good writer" so it wasn't hard in that aspect as it is with some. The essays sound hard at first but once he lectures on how to set it up you realise it's manageable.

The class isn't too difficult. Your grade is based on 4 essays(300-1000 words) and a research paper (2000 words). He has a sense of humor, but is very opiniated. I would recommed him as an English 101 teacher.

Very funny. I really liked his class. You have to attend classes though but if you do it'll be easy to keep up with him cause he's very clear on what he wants. it'snot hard to attend his classes neither causehis sense of humor makes the class really interesting and fun.

loved the class at first, but the homework got harder and harder until it took over my life. i never have had problems with a homework load prior to this class. Very tough grader, too. Don't take this class. I've heard the same thing from four other people.

Over all Hoffman is a good professor. He is a little full of himself and can be a jerk at times but I found the class to be interesting. He makes you write alot of essays and is farely tough when he grades them.

This guy is awesome. He's got a dark humor but is really funny if you don't take the jokes too seriously. If you go to the classes he'll tell you exactlly what he wants for his essays. I highly recommend this class unless your not very good in english or don't plan to attend the classe.Funny & fun.

One of the most discouraging english teacher ever! If he's not interested in your paper and no matter how good you did on it, you will still get a bad grade for it. If you want to learn and dont care about your grade, then he's a good choice, otherwise dont even bother.

Lots of research. He would speak a lot, but the monologues were somehow pertinent or parallel to the material being covered. The perceived sarcasm some other students commented on was more of a dry humor than any sort of maliciousness, even when commenting on student writings. attack.

This is a great professor, those others who could not hack him were slackers, yes this class takes work, research, creativity, and thought, but isnt that what school is for? If you arent serious about your education, dont take him, but if you are and ready to learn, this is the guy to take!!!

Professor Hoffman is a great teacher. You guys who wrote these other reviews probably don't really want to learn or don't want a challenge AT ALL. His class is not hard, but you do learn from it. Yes he is sarcastic, but I do not imagine how anyone finds it offensive that he is trying to make a sometimes dull topic funny! He is great!

Andrew Hoffman is a superb teacher. Funny, inspiring about the English language/subject. Makes learning interesting. Definitely a 10 in teaching style and attitude towards students. Takes time to tell jokes about his family. Logical in reasoning/approach. I highly recommend this teacher! He shows respect for hardwork. My grade was "A" in class.

An excellent instructor who is hindered only by the texts he must use. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (now Harcourt Brace) can change their buildings anytime they want, but the quality of their textbooks remains the same, flawed and unusable. Hoffman's only struggle is making his class understandable to his students with such inadequate material.

Not what I needed my first semester in college. I managed a 4 on the AP literature exam and somehow still ended up with a B in the class. I had to work hard to get it though. He iis extremely biased no matter what he says and will lower your grade if yo don't see eye to eye on any given subject.

Slander him all you want but if you want to learn, which is the purpose of college, then take him. You'll learn more in his class then in any other English Class at Mesa. Hoffman is a great teacher. All you do in the class is write essays which are due every few weeks. All the information you need to know for the writing assignments is in the textbook and you can always ask him for help. Basically, just read the book and write the essays and you'll pass. Don't be lazy. He's also pretty funny.

Ok this teacher is really good and the class is NOT hard! You have a bunch of essays to write but it's not bad at all. I mean english is not even my first language (I ve been speaking it for 2 years) and I got an A in his class so it's not hard. Just go to class and don't be too lazy and you're fine!!

Bottom line: Hoffmans class is pretty hard and you pretty much have to go everyday, BUT I learned more about writing essays in his class than any other class Ive taken. Id reccomend him to anyone who wants to learn how to write and is willing to work.

Hoffman is a good teacher! He'll teach you how to write a thesis statement very well. His biggest pet peave is WHAT sources you use and MLA format. Go see him in his office hours and he'll help you out! He likes veterans as well.

Mr. Hoffman is a very strict grader, however if you need to know the correct basics of writing, you should take his class. The text book he uses is a great reference tool for many other classes. I thought that he graded fair on written assignments, but his tests were hard.

Okay Hoffman is very strict and anal about things, but he is a very good professor, you will learn a lot from this class. There is a lot of essays to write and it gets overwhelming, but it is worth it. Do not be late to his class and he doesn't like people going to the bathroom or leaving his class period. He will call you out and is very blunt.

This guy is classic. I had him for 43 and now for 101. If you are not easily offended and have an open mind you will enjoy his humor. He is great at teaching. I have learned writing skills that will benifit me far beyond his class. ;)

If you're easily offended or don't appreciate a good challenged then do not take this class or you will end up writing a lame review like most people here have. You will be grown as a thinker and writer in this class. His humour is fresh, ironic, and wity-fun class! His classes are not for the faint of heart, but are the best classes i've taken.

You can definitely learn things from his class; however, be aware, his personality is disgusting and text books are expensive.

He is high on his horse, full of attitude and heavy with the work. It's a hard class. You will hate him, much like a recruit hates a drill instructor. You will, however, walk away more confident on how to write an essay.

Okay I was afraid in the beginning of the class, I'm an English major and I thought, "I might not get an A in this class!" He gave me a B on my first paper, I never get B's on papers! After I learned what he expected, I got A's on my papers, not to mention I learned a lot! I think he's a good instructor, strict and challenging but good. Lit rocks!!

Weekly 600 word responses to about 80 pg reading. 2 exams, short answer essays. The lecture is just that, him lecturing at you for 90 min. Not much class discussion because he doesn't like to deviate from his notes, to the point where even his jokes are well-worn and flat. He should stick to lit analysis instead of the failed stand-up routine.

Hoffman is the best professor i have had so far in college. he tells a lot of jokes and most of the time is the only one laughing which makes you laugh. uses text book every day. touch on ur writing. also when going over work if you are not paying attention and u get called he will make you feel dumb. haha. HUGE on attentence. so be there.

Mr. H is one of my favorite teachers, but don't take him for 205! You'll have to write 4 boring research papers, 2000 wrds each, with only small variations between them. He, however, is a fabulous teacher and I'd reccomend him for any other English class. Tough, funny, and makes you a better writer.

Simply the hardest class I`ve ever taken. His English 205 class is essentially 40 pages of extremely harshly graded work for the semester. You will learn a lot, but you haven been warned.

Honestly he is a very good teacher! He knows what he is talking about, he shows you how to get more from the reading. He is a hard grader but the works itself is relatively easy. You'll learn a lot and if you have half a brain you'll pass the class.

A tough but FAIR grader. If you don't miss class, truly READ the assigned readings, hand in weekly essays, you will do well. I brought my grade down by failing to hand in 2 assignments and not preparing well for the final. He expects students to read and understand what they're reading- simple. Good class for bookworms and writers. Not for lazies!

Hoffman is a great instructor. He's really funny and he really knows and understands what he is talking about. The people here that are complaining are just a bunch of lazy whiners. Oh what, you're surprised that you actually have to do the work in a class? Get over it! I got perfect grades on all the papers and the exams were not that hard.

Professor Hoffman knows his literature and is informative & entertaining on what is going on in the various stories. Unfortunately his grading is Extremely Critical. Assigned reading is discussed and analyzed After an assignment has been turned in, not before. A word of Caution to prospective students of Hoffman - a C in his class is a B in others.

I have taken him for both British Lit courses and gotten an A on all of my papers and tests BUT his class is NOT an easy A, even for good students. He is extremely challenging, you have to show up to class because lecture is very important and take VERY good notes. He is fun and fair, but don't take him for lit if you're only looking for the grade.

I love his teaching style. Show him that you are trying hard. Go to tutoring center and get helped. He definitely prefers getting better papers than students could've ended up turning in. Be there all the time and even go see him to his office. He'll be extremely helpful and nice to you. If you don't do your job, nobody can help you at college.

4 papers, 2000 words minimum for each. That is the entire grade. Explains exactly what he expects from each paper. Very knowledgeable professor and helpful during office hours, but his attempts at stand up comedy during class are terrible. Overall, If you take his class you will know how to write a good research paper for sure.

Hoffman is cool. I took him for English Lit 1 & 2. Not the most exciting stuff, but he knows his stuff. His jokes are sometimes good, sometimes really bad, but always makes you laugh. I can see why some don't like him. His class is straightforward, he teaches like a university professor. If you need Enlgish Lit, I'd take him.

I actually really liked him. If you are interested in reading/writing, his classes are more enjoyable. So if you're not, then give a 110% because he is not an easy grader, but I really feel like I learned a lot and improved as a writer. Plus, I thought his joke were pretty good most of the time!

Hoffman is cool. He explains exactly what he wants from you in an outline for EVERY paper you will write. If you expect not to work or if you have difficulties voicing your own ideas don't take his class. A well written paper with the same cliche, dull ideas is just a C. You pick your own topics so have fun!

Nice, funny teacher. Outlines EXACTLY what he expects. VERY homework intense, as soon as one essay was due another was given. Be able to argue your own opinions, don’t use clichés, get creative, and prof-read! Also be able to follow clear directions and willing to spend a LOT of time perfecting your work, I highly recommend him if you can do so

OH MAN! Where to start? Hoffman is HARD! If english is not your forte' or if emglish is not one of your strengths, DO NOT TAKE HIM! OK, I'm going to say it again, DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a hard grader and insults students if you don't write your paper correctly. On the contrary I did learn a lot from him. He did improve my writing skills.

I was an English major and struggled at first with this class, but he helped me out during his office hours. I learned a lot, and he helped prepare me for SDSU. Bottom line: If you are taking his class to get an easy "A," don't; but if you want to learn a lot, grow as a student, and get a good education this is the class to take.

Professor Hoffman is very dry and interesting personality-wise. His lectures are relatively interesting if you like English literature, though I had a once-a-week class of his so they got very boring even for me (and I love literature) by a couple hours in. But he's not a bad option to go with over all.

Passionate about lit and teaching. Genuinely wants all of his students to succeed! This was a hard class-be prepared! Learn MLA style, familiarize yourself with lit. from the period-800-1799. (Get the Norton Anthology early!) Teaches like a university professor, so he is great for preparing to transfer. Knows his stuff! Read the text & study aids.

Hoffman is a great instructor and is genuinely helpful IF you ask. After having taken his class I feel pretty confident about my writing skills. If you procrastinate a lot and leave things for the last minute, then this professor is not for you. However, if you do the work, pay attention in class, and follow his instructions you get an A.

An essay a week of about 600words-900words. Not hard. Decent midterm, easy final. Was a lot of reading but well worth it. Loved the class and the genera. Covered a lot of material in a short amount of time. Involved class discussion, great attitude, willing to help students in office hours. I'd say that he was one of the best prof's I had at Mesa.

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE in this class or you will be very sorry with sleepless nights every time an essay is due. Your grade consists mostly of 4 essays. Start learning your MLA style because he will fail you if he doesn't like it. He is sometimes funny others… not so much. He lectures almost exactly whats in the book but he requires attendance.

Great teacher if you want to better your writing skills. He knows his stuff. Se him in his office and have him help you with your essays. Your effort will be reflected in your grade. Nice guy. Class was challenging but beneficial. We wrote 12 papers total over 16 weeks. A lot of reading and writing. I enjoyed the class and liked the professor, but be prepared to work! I would recommend this professor if you need Eng Lit 215.

He is very passionate about the literature he teaches. His teaching style for this course is a 3 hour lecture, so be prepared to take a lot of notes! his midterms and finals are pretty tough if you don't study before hand, and there really is no room slack off in this class. if i could take him again i would. i highly recommend him,one of the best.

Hoffman is a great and very helpful teacher. Sticks strictly to his syllabus and makes his expectations clear. 4 papers with a minimum word count with mandatory conferences which were extremely helpful. Funny guy but can be strict when needed. Really enjoyed his class.

He is a good instructor. His class is pretty much only writing long essays. The reading is focused on developing the MLA format. I liked that we got to choose our our topics each time. He is very helpful when you actually go to get help. He grades a somewhat tough but only if you deserve it.. meaning don't make the same mistake twice!

Professor Hoffman has a genuine passion for literature and if you do as well, this class shouldn't be a problem. YOU HAVE TO DO EVERY ASSIGNMENT or you will not get a good grade. He makes you work for it but if you're in Eng 215 you have to be remotely interested in the subject anyway, right? Also, everyone can lighten up about his sense of humor.

I had him for my english 43 class and it was BEYOND easy. Other students from his 101 and 215 classes say he's difficult and I believe that for those courses. For enlgish 43 though, the class was very easy. Just make sure you do ALL your homework, essays, and pass the tests. There will be no doubt you won't get an A.

Professor Hoffman made English 43 so easy. It was so easy that it was the only class I hated attending. I learned a lot of grammar,but he acted like we were in middle school. Hoffman often tries to be funny and branches off into his personal life. It was an easy A, but I chose to Pass. Homework every class and easy tests. I wouldn't take him again.

Welcome to college! if you take professor Hoffmans transfer lever English 205 class go ahead and expect to be pushed to TRANSFER level writing. Hoffman is great if you like being challenged and expected to perform. He treats the class as if it was at a university, and doesn't budge too much, however he is still FAIR and will help where he can.

Makes the class equivalent to university difficulty. Only about 4 papers assigned in the semester. They are long research papers but doable. Open to helping just ask for it. Very fair teacher. Attendance is required, 4 absences and dropped. Papers are easy to get good grades on just meet min. requirements. Overall, good teacher.

He comes off at first as kind of ignorant or rude or boring BUT i promise he just needs some warming up . he expects a lot from us. He assigns a lot of honework from his textbook he wrote. But he goes over things clear and if u listen to bis lectures , take notes and get the honework done on time and turned it yoy will pass. Hes really smart guy

Great class! Took him this semester for English 101. What you need to do in order to do well on the papers is simply go to him during his office hours and ask for feedback, he will be happy to help. Work hard and diligently. The subject of the semester is Monsters which made class very interesting. Will definitely take him in the future for Eng 215

If you are a strong writer then I would 100% take his class. Our entire grade was based on showing up, completing easy assignments, and six essays. He is a tough essay grader but he responds to emails quickly and is very easy to talk to during office hours. He will not proofread your essay but is willing to answer any questions.

Professor Hoffman is a really nice guy. Do your work and you will pass. All you do is homework and essay out of a book that he wrote. Not a hard class. He is kinda funny. He can be a little rude at times but just stay on his good side. Easy A if you do your work.

I am honestly surprised by the negative reviews on Hoffman. I thought his ENG 216 class was really great. The lectures are long, but his dry humor keeps things pretty hilarious, plus he gives a 20 minute break to split up the long 3 hour class. Just be sure to study for the midterm and final, they aren't easy. Overall though, great class.

Mr. Hoffman is brutally on papers and work citation. He is actually one of the few professors I've had that put red ink throughout most of my papers, some with great feedback, some with disappointing feedback. Even though he's not the kindest grader and can be mean when approaching to ask for help, he's actually nice.

I took his 215 and 216 courses this year. The workload is intense and the grading can be rough if you do not put in the effort. He takes the subject seriously. Anyone taking his class should as well, or go somewhere else. Don't waste his or your time if you aren't willing to try. He grades fair. If you suck, you will know it. You know, do the work!

Professor Hoffman is someone who is very clear with what he expects from his students. You get the grade that you earn in the class. The reading schedule is heavy and so are the lectures. If you don't read and put forth A LOT of effort, you probably won't pass. I did enjoy the class and the Professor's wittiness in both ENGL 215 and 216.

He's honestly so funny and he does care about his students; which is why he is not going to let them slide by with an easy A. When you transfer to a University you're going to be happy that you had a teacher who cared more about your success than liking him. If you're sensitive you might find his jokes insulting. Misunderstood Professor.

Good class. I learned a lot. On first day I was intimidated by the sheer volume of the work he expected- thought I was in over my head. Put in the work, do the reading. You'll do a 600 pg essay every week on the readings and a tough bluebook midterm and final. Who thought Brit Lit could be interesting? Hard work but you'll appreciate it in the end

Initially I found Hoffman's 205 class grading criteria intimidating. If you have poor writing skills this is not the class to take. Want to wait to write a 2000 word essay paper 2 nights before? Not for you. He is , however, a terrific instructor. If you wish to prepare yourself for University writing assignments. I highly suggest his class.

I took Eng 101 with Professor Hoffman. There's a lot of reading to write the essays. The readings were easy. Due dates are short, but if you don't procrastinate, you'll do it on time and get a good grade. He's very helpful and funny. Show up to class because assignments in class are easy to get points!

Loved the class. Only thing your graded on is a few quizzes and 4 essays. Conferences were nice and friendly. As long as you don't skip class and you genuinely put effort on proposals and essays, you will pass with no problem. Very nice and funny guy! Would totally take again!!

Although I disagreed with the grading style, seems to be more focused on format than context, I learned a lot from this class. Definitely helped in building my confidence for writing college level papers.

Prof. Hoffman's class is definitely not easy by any means, but I can honestly say that I am a better writer because of his class. You're going to have to work, and there is a lengthy paper due every couple weeks, but as long as you keep up with the interim deadlines, there should be no problem meating all the requirements.

I enjoyed his class so much that I would definitely take him again. He gives good feedbacks and he respects his students. Four essays for the entire semester, the last one will need a minimum of 3000 words. As long as you come to class and work for it, you would pass the class with no problem.

I was weary of taking his class because of all the bad reviews I was seeing but I was pleasantly surprised that he wasn't as horrible as most people said he was. I think that most students just don't want to do all of the work he assigns. Sure he's tough, but he tell you exactly what he wants. Plus, he has a few good jokes.

Hoffman has a dark sense of humor and repeats jokes a lot which can either make it enjoyable or annoy you. He is all about preparing you for University level writing so he does grade pretty hard. Classes are basically all lecture going over the assigned readings. He's a tough grader but he's fair and very clear with expectations on papers and exams. His jokes are dark, cynical, and witty so sometimes they go over your head but overall he's pretty funny. He gives great insight and prompts students to really think about the readings.

Professor Hoffman is a great professor! Took English 205 during COVID19 in the summer and, although it was a short & fast course, my essay writing skills and researching skills have significantly improved. His workload is completely manageable if you can stay organized and put in effort.

I was nervous to take this class because of the reviews left but I loved it. If you reach out and ask questions you will receive great feedback. It was essay heavy but there were check-ins so it made it less stressful. Definitely one of my favorite professors and will teach you a lot about writing.

If you really want to challenge yourself and work hard, take Professor Hoffman's English 101. You will write and read like cray. He is a tough grader, but I believe its for your best interest. Essays MLA format and homework almost every day/night. Participate in every discussion, check the modules for Wednesday assignments /not all on the calendar.

Professor Hoffman's class is straight forward and easy to be successful in if you complete all your work in a timely manner. I am usually not crazy about english classes because I feel that many teachers can be subjective when it comes to grading essays. Professor Hoffman, however, does a very good job at explaining what is good and what is not so good when it comes to writing essays. His feedback is amazing and to be honest, the textbook we used in the class was great!

Professor Hoffman will exponentially help you develop your skills with literary analysis. The literature you read in this class is super rad, he gives clear outlines and expectations on how to succeed in the class. He's got a pretty dry sense of humor and does not pull punches.

Sticks to the syllabus and good sense of humor

There are 4 papers for the semester so it is a lot of writing but you can pretty much write whatever you are interested in (minus a couple of banned topics. The professor gives really good feedback and really wants you to improve on each essay. Also discussion posts can make or break your grade so always do them.

Started off on a bad note with him. But realized he's actually nice and tries to help students. Always do the discussion boards they will help your grade. 4 essays for the semester and a lot of discussion boards, peer edits along with each essay. Not bad.

Although I took this course online, it's probably one of my favorites so far. I enjoyed reading the course material. I met with this professor four or five times regarding my Honors contract in the course, and he made things very clear for me. Great guy. I don't think he grades harshly; he grades fairly. Taking his class again in the spring.
