doesn't give many A's, but nice guy, good lectures(cute, too!)
He is difficult but you learn to appreciate that not even his is taken for grant
wicked nice guy , very cute.. worth going to lecture! (and the guys hockey coach woohoo)
He's a nice guy, good teacher. His tests are all essays which can be tough, but if you go to lecture you'll do pretty good.
WOW, He is the hottest professor I have ever had. OMG does he look good all the time, break me off a piece of that!!!
lectures are a bit dry but a wonderful guy. Remembers your name even after YEARS of not seeing you. very helpful. Cares about his students.
The worst class I have ever taken. Never was there if I needed help. VERY BORING!!!!!!!!!!!

He is very helpful and always there when you need him, if you go during office hours or make prior arrangements with him!!! His class is hard if you do not stay on top of the work and pay attention. But other than that he is really nice & willing to help.
Awesome teacher. Has a different yet interesting approach to learning history, it's not One damn thing after another . Really recomend having him as a professor.
Let's start by saying what a hot little guy Holman is! Good teacher overall, tests aren't bad, work load nothing big. And love that accent of his! ( aganste, not again )
Good prof and boy did he know his stuff. His essays are intimidating and tests are a little scary but study and you'll pull through. He's okay even though he is from Canada.
Andy Holman is not only the hottest hockey coach ever, but he is a great professor. Very intelligent, approachable, and compassionate.
Being a history major, I would say that he is one of the best professors in the department. He is knowledgeable about the subject matter. The test and workload is not easy, but just right. He is goes out of his way to help students. He's also a hottie!
Great professor. His class was a bit challenging but definitely worth taking. He's a very nice, helpful guy. It was hard to pay attention though because I kept thinking about how hot he was :)
Smart, Funny, Helpful and a HOTTIE! Gave an 8 pg. paper and lecture was a little boring but he also commited time to interactive work. Cares about every student, not just the geniuses. Take his class if you're prepared to work and want some eye candy.
Not only is this guy a hottie (good to know I'm not the only one who has drooled through his classes) but made history (which i HATE) pretty interesting. Definitely recommend this teacher. Hard work but learn lots.
Does not just lecture, likes to facilitate conversations. Makes History more interesting even to non-history type people. Good work load. Be ready for HONEST feedback on papers. Can be harsh but all is with good intent. Definately wants people to succeed
Good teacher, easy on the eyes :)
Nice, Easy, funny, a great professor
such an easy grader! he's nice, personable, funny, and most of all....easy on the eyes. midterm, 10pg paper, and final. lectures most of the time but also has group work.
Hottie! Goes without saying-He made history quite tolerable, and not just because he's easy to look at. He is not only a scholar, but a great teacher who actually appears to care whether or not his students are learning. He's fair, and fosters an environment of mutual respect. Well done Andy- Thanks
HOTTY!
Youve got to be kidding. This class was hard. He gave us no idea what was going to be on his exams, 2 exams and 1 10 pg paper! I would not take him for an intro class in history, higher courses maybe! This class was a waste of time and money. The facts I learned I could have read on my own.
He was very hard. Lectured first half then group work second half of class. Gave no direction as to what to study for exams. Would not recommend.
additional 1-2 page papers assigned at random and not on syllabus so it is difficult to manage your time, teaches at higher level than an intro class, no clear focus on test material only braod information provided, does allow class discussions, would not recommend if you do not love history and/or have a basic understanding of history
very smart and interesting. He is one of the only teachers to use discussion based group work which helps you to process the inforamtion and use higher level thinking skills. Oh he is cute too!
AWESOME! Super easy, Nice and not too bad to have to stare at for an hr
If this man can make Quebec and Canada Since 1867 and a Hisotry Seminar on Historiography interesting then he can do just about anything. I will say though, that he may be a little demanding on an intro class.
Holman is a great teacher. He is very helpful. He let me borrow many of his own personal books for a research project. I felt that there was a lot of reading compared to other classes, and I never did get all of it done, but as long as you do most of it and keep on top of the subject topics you will do well.
Canadian studies visiting professor. Wicked cool guy, canadian, hockey fan. Can make anything interesting- we talked at lunch in the caf and he has some pretty funny stories. Tough but fair, expects a lot from you but you want to do better then normal for him. Taking a class next semester just because he's teaching it. PS- Coach of Hockey Team.
Nice guy, but the class was boring. Two tests- midterm and final both essay questions. One ten page paper..eh be sure to participate in class because you get graded on it.
Great professor. He expects a lot from you and expects you to perform like a true scholar. Midterm, Final and 10 pg paper due at end of term along with the constitution booklet for this class. He was very passionate about teaching his subject even though the subject was not appealing to me at all. You have to take this class, TAKE HIM!
High expectations, but clear about them. He WILL improve your writing skills, I know he did mine. AWESOME! Very approachable...easy on the eyes as well.
Dr. Holman is a great teacher. There is a lot of reading, which is required for the weekly seminar session. The grading is very fair: mid-term (25%), final (25%), position paper (30%), and the seminar sessions (20).
Holman is a great prof! He makes you write papers but really makes you improve on your writing skills. He is a really nice guy and easy to talk to. He loves Canada and ice hockey. He makes class wicked fun and I would recommend him to anyone!
He was a great Professor. He would explain everything and made it interesting. Put a lot of effort into your papers and you'll do fine. There are 6 papers and the Final which was writing 2 essays he gives hints on what the topics are. He's very nice. Group discussions every class. You watch several movies. This was my favorite class. TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Holman is not only a great professor but a great person. He is extremely helpful and excited about class. He expects you to do your work, but will help you through it and is a fair grader. And what better teacher to have for a class on Canadian history than a Canadian?
His seminar was tough. 6 papers for the semester, four scholarly sources and four pages each paper. Busted my but off on every paper and didnt get above an 87. Wrote 6 and a half pages on miracle and got a 79. Overall hes a good guy. His lectures are the most boring thing i have ever had to sit through though. I cringe just thinking about them.
Great Professor. His class was very hard...lots of note taking and he goes so fast..it's impossible to keep up with him. 8 page paper (gives you plenty of time for it...get started early) midterm and final exam. Must be in attendance for seminar grade. He comes across as being tough. He's a nice guy.
Awesome Teacher. do the work so u can participate in class he loves that. to do well u need to do the work like in any class, especially history. hes really cool, great guy and teacher. tests are easy if u go to class
Gets mad when the class didn't do the reading and walked out on the class. Readings are small, great professor though.
He is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking his class. He is so helpful and you will really learn how to write a good paper. I'd definitely take him again. What a nice guy!
He is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking his class. He is so helpful and you will really learn how to write a good paper. I'd definitely take him again.
Seems like a nice guy, just don't try to make any colorful comments or any attempt at humor. Was kinda rude to a student speaker. He likes to watch the class squirm. I wish he'd just lecture. Instead he asks questions and then disagrees with our answers.Even blind kids answers Very pompous for a "nice guy." Same workload in 6wk summer as 12wk fall
Historiography: A challenging class with A LOT of reading, (and printing). Seminar style, with a lot of conversation in class, and very little lecture. He makes you comfortable and encourages people to speak. 2 6 page take home exams and one 12-15 page book review. Great class! Very cute teacher, and easy to talk to!
Very full of himself & conceited. Can be a male chauvinist.
So hes condesending and loves to play devils advocate? Let me tell you, if you are not prepared to work in his class, be prepared to get slaughtered. Try and see things from an alternate viewpoint? Duh, thats why you go to school. Exposure. This guy is fabulous. He is one of the best the department has. Get ready to do more than nothing
Can you say Napoleon Complex?
He takes great interest in his students his work basically anything that has to do with history, canada, hockey etc. He expects you to do the reading and to be able to contribute. His classes are challenging but he will give you all the help he can. Hes gone over my writing with me from two years ago and he explained what I am doing right and wrong
Alright class, really have to use all you know about the subject to do good on the tests and connect things. You have to do the reading or youll be lost and he WILL call on you randomly. Not very good for GER but nice guy.
He is a great guy. He works you are but he knows his stuff and expects you to know yours. Question? Ask him. Problems? tell him. Very fair, understanding and makes good efforts for his students. Perfect for anyone w a CanStudies minor as well. Gives good, honest, thoughtful perspectives. Loves to play devil advocate and has great class discussions
He is my favorite history professor of all I've taken at BSC. he is very interesting and helpful. You can't go wrong taking a class with him. You will learn a lot! Great class and great guy!
Class participation is expected, but he makes class fun with lots of discussions and group work. Teacher is very involved and helful. Plus, he's easy on the eyes...
Average history teacher, does what you expect a history teacher to do. Fun at times, boring at others. My advice is to not take one 3-hour class a week -- it's not a fault of Holman; just that history class for 3 hours is like torture. Spread it out over the week!
Holman is basically the Chuck Norris of BSU. He teaches a full roster of classes, coaches the hockey team, and oh yeah...flew to Toronto to run a marathon in the middle of the semester. His class is challenging without being difficult, and he is personally invested in his students. Stern and demanding, he is also helpful and passionate.
One of my 2 favorite professors, and one of the best the history department has to offer. Very helpful, passionate, and fair. Class discussions, writing projects, group proects. Always available by email or office. Very dedicated.
His lectures are very dry. He gives a lot of reading assignments ranging from 10-50 pages on top of papers. He gives 5 papers, all 4 pages long. If he thinks you're not paying attention he'll call on you to answer.
He gives wayyyy too much reading
Cool class. A lot of reading but it's worth while reading, and usually interesting reading. He is a good grader, tough on you, but very helpful in things that can help you improve. There was a summary of his corrections on the back pages. Nice man, and has a good presence in the class, good charisma when it comes to teaching.
Great professor, if just want take a class to get a grade don't take him. But if you want to be in a class that you are involved and want to do the work then take him. One of my favorite professors, I took him a couple times. there is a bit of reading and discussion but it isn't that bad if you just "get the jist of things"
Professor Holman is the nicest guy. Genuinely cares about his students success. Although there is A LOT of reading and 4 papers, he provides very clear and specific directions. He offers to review papers before you hand them in to provide feedback. I highly recommend him.
Nice, funny guy and very passionate about what he teaches. Already signed up for another course with him next semester. A lot of reading and writing, but it's balanced by interactive class discussions.
I had him for Second Year Seminar- War and Rhetoric. He is an awesome teacher! His readings are a little heavier, but as long as you read, the assignments are super easy. I would love to take him again. Again, do the readings and you will find the work to be easy-peasy.
great guy, but his lectures can certainly get boring. as long as youre a good writer, you can easily get through the class without having to kill yourself trying to digest all the material. if you want an easy class, take him. show a little effort in class and he will love you.
One of my top 3 at Bridgewater. Taken Summer 2015. I absolutely hate "history lecture classes," he takes it a step further, his classes are inventive, inclusive, and unique. You will have to earn the A. He will destroy every essay you write with his red pen. Thats awesome because I want my money's worth in college. You will learn really something.
Such an amazing teacher. Completely turned my semester around. The way he structures classes make it a lot of fun and my learning has grown exponentially. He's there to actually help his students and make sure they succeed in his class and in life.
Dr. Holman is a great teacher, He knows what he is talking about and you will learn a lot by just showing up to every class. He cares about you doing well and is understanding of situations that can occur. Holman was a great teacher and a fair grader. Show up to class and participate you will do great.
Andy Holman is probably one of BSU's best professors. Not only is he incredibly intelligent, he's a great person. Seriously one of the nicest people I know. He has high expectations for students, but he is reasonable with the amount of work and grades. He also gives really thorough feedback and is understanding and helpful. 100% recommend!
Took him many times. Would recommend him!!
Dr. Holman was easily one of the best professors I have had. He is very kind and knows the material really well. He communicates the ideas and techniques so that everyone can understand. He genuinely cares and wants all his students to learn and do well.
Andy is a really great guy who is easy to talk to. He (usually) selects very interesting material to discuss, and encourages students to share their thoughts. Feedback on your writing is thorough and helpful. At times, I felt like the material was "above me." Readings, discussions, and assignments felt like graduate-level work. Be ready to discuss!
Holman is very understanding and passionate about Canadian history. He is very knowledgeable about it and can answer any question you throw at him. Would definitely recommend taking him if you have the chance.
Somewhat difficult course. Lots of reading and homework. And can be so beyond boring. But professor Holman genuinely cares about his students and will do what he can to assist you in your learning. To spite the difficulty, on of my favorite history professors at BSU
Prof Holman is a nice guy, he responds to emails and will give due date extensions if needed. However, I took him for second-year seminar and it was a lot of work. Had to purchase two textbooks, write 4 five-page papers, weekly readings, and weekly commentary. A lot of work! Be ready to read!
Prof Holman is a nice guy, it's clear that he cares about teaching his students in a way that benefits them. Very understanding during the pandemic, and generally goes out of his way to look after the wellbeing of his students.
Holman is exceptional. A phenomenal choice in the history department and beyond. The pandemic considered, he was/is very understanding. It's important to note, there are weekly readings and a lot of them. In addition, the readings are discussed at length every lecture. Not many assignments, so there's an opportunity to shine with class discussions.
Has may good qualities and would take again but I honestly think he is way overrated in every category. There are several better history professors but if there is no alternative then you will learn if you work hard.
Hes a nice guy, respectful but as class went on he seemed to be unprepared and would make up assignments almost as busy work. It was pretty apparent he was not very connected to us as students, even with the Pandemic he really didn't care and it was very apparent. If you like meaningless work that won't help you at all in life he's the prof for you
I dont leave reviews on legit anything but Holman honestly the goat. You have to watch a lecture and read a chapter for homework before every class so theres definitely a decent amount of work but hes crazy passionate about U.S history and really thrives to make sure you understand the material
Holman breaks his classes in half (lecture first, group work/discussion second). You need to read for class or else you're participation is screwed. He loves to call on people for no reason. 2 papers, a final, and participation are all you're graded on, but he grades on effort rather content. The papers are hefty, but its 400-level. He really rocks
Pedantic. Not a good lecturer. Calls on people randomly sometimes for no apparent reason, other than he has nothing to say at the moment. Way too critical. But other than those few things he is ok.
Dr. Holman is a really great professor! He is passionate about what he teaches but specifically about being a historian. He knows so much about the topic and he is Canadian so he is nice. Thankfully assignments are VERY detailed, and he will leave notes on your entire paper which is helpful for the next one. You will be called on so do you reading!
Not a terrible teacher but does have a big ego. Don't disagree with him, otherwise your cooked. He is well liked but if you rub him the wrong way watch out. There are so many better choices.
I absolutely love this man. He is my favorite history professor at BSU. I was able to take 3 classes with him. He really helped me with my work and while he was critical, it helped me become a better writer. I will always appreciate Andy and his passion for teaching.
Be ready to read
If he disagrees with you, it's his say or the highway. Can get very insulting. So much for scholarly discussion.
There is a lot of disagreement here. He is inconsistent in how he treats people, so that may explain the differences. I had several bad experiences, so I feel comfortable giving a low rating. I understand where some people are coming from though.
Way overrated. Not a bad guy but there are much better history professors at Bridgewater.
His proseminar class was extremely helpful in learning how historical writing works. Nice guy who cares about students and the material taught. He requires hard copies of essays, so you need to keep up with deadlines. Not a very harsh grader and he will help you improve your writing.
Not a bad guy, just never felt at ease in his class. Yes, he does help you learn how to write better essays, but seems like a faker to me. He's uncomfortable lecturing so he does too much discussion during class time. Better to take another professor with more knowledge of American History and other areas of World History.
Holman is a fantastic professor. I am certainly challenged by his class, and I am learning so much about history and history as a discipline. He subscribes to the belief that a historian does not have a right to be dull, and Holman is certainly very far from dull. His enthusiasm for the subject gets me to his class. Take him, take him, TAKE HIM!
Will definitely help you write a better essay but other than that he doesn't meet my standards for a college professor of history. Not a total waste but there are so many better alternatives.
Holman's a great guy, highly recommend him. He's funny, personable, cares about his students and you can really tell he loves history down to its core. Loves hockey. My only real problem is that he likes to cold-call students and had us read out documents to the class. There were also two presentations. Overall amazing class though and great prof.
If it weren't for his interest in sports and sports history, I think his popularity would diminish greatly. People are conflating that with evaluations of his teaching which is what this evaluation website is all about. He teaches how to write an essay. Important, but that is where it ends. There are great alternatives, Nester, Rubinson, et al.
I agree with previous evaluation that his sports background appeals to many students. Also agree that he teaches better than most how to write essays. There is nothing beyond that worth spending the time and effort. Definitely would not have taken him if these evaluations had been more accurate.
Textbook is used heavily, reading is engaging, lecture is very engaging, and participation matters. Show up to class, know your material, and contributing to class along with giving your own perspective is super helpful. Took this class as a summer class and would definitely take him again.
Would probably make a decent high school teacher. Not a very good college professor.
Not a terrible professor or person but never felt at ease in this class. There is a kind of arrogance. Glad I came across this discussion. I switched to Dr. Nester, and glad I did.
I adore Dr. Holman but be prepared to work. His courses don't typically include a heavy courseload but active participation and completion of readings will guarantee you success. Will grade everything with a fine tooth comb but it is incredibly beneficial, especially in future classes.
Sorry I ever enrolled in his class, but was fooled by the ratings is saw here. They are mostly not accurate. He is not what he appears to be. Lots of people get through unscathed, I guess. Hope that you are one of those, otherwise it can be a rough ride.
Holman is the goat. Understanding, a great lecturer, and incredibly smart. I keep taking him because I keep learning a lot from him. Class work is creative, essays are complex but again creatively formatted. If you are a history major and haven't taken him you're missing out big time.
His relatives must be writing the positive reviews. They are not even close to reality. If you want to learn some interesting history and feel comfortable in the classroom there are so many better alternatives.
A total fraud. Its worse pretending to be nice.
Prof. Holman is a passionate historian who brings energy to his lectures. The workload is challenging, but he provides detailed feedback to help improve your writing. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
Dr. Holman is well liked. Definitely do not recommend the course.
Not a bad guy. Will never take any of his classes again. One was enough.
Made me feel very uncomfortable. Cannot figure out why. It is a complete mystery to me why he took the attitude he did. Will definitely not take any of his other courses.
Glad I read these evaluations. Wish I had seen then before I took his class. Now I know it wasn't just me.
The worst history class I have ever taken. Part of it is that Canadian history is the worst, but most of it is his teaching.
It was awful, he treated me badly. Started partway through the semester even though I thought everything was ok and it never stopped after that. He is not a good teacher. Doesn't lecture much. When he does it is erratic. Obsessed with writing essays and corrects tiny unimportant things. Gets very tedious. I was happy when it ended.
I was made to feel uncomfortable. The course wasn't interesting. I just wish I had taken a different course with a better professor.
Lectures are not interesting or informative. Discussions are not productive because he doesn't prepare you. Grades unevenly. Doesn't seem to enjoy what he is doing. Too bad he decided to become a professor.
I think someone has this like crazy vendetta against him and is tanking his reviews. Holman is incredible. Wonderfully smart, caring, and inspired me to want to learn history. Ignore the 1 stars, take him for yourself. I'm graduating now and my 3 courses with him remain my 3 favorites at Bridgewater. He kept me in this major. Go Canucks!
Most overrated professor at BSU. His lectures are boring. It is very difficult to prepare for class. He discourages students from majoring in history. Only had him once. That was enough. If you are into hockey, then you might like him but only if you suffer from a head injury. If you love history do not take him.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors. He is kind, supportive, and truly cares about his students. He checks in, engages in real conversations, and wants you to succeed. As long as you do the work, you will do well. Not sure why the reviews are so negative because my experience was great.
It looks like a debate is brewing. My experience was pretty negative—he tends to jump to conclusions and comes across as very condescending. It completely ruined the course for me. I switched from history to political science, and I might have stayed in history if not for that. Forewarned is forearmed.
