Easy if u read the chapters and follow his notes. The activity quizzes and the games he does for review are half the answers on the test. This is not that difficult of a class. He makes it fun...Oh and he loves snakes!

Awesome teacher, he really makes the class fun. If you do your homework you're going to be okay! This teacher is hard to take your eyes off!

He is passionate about the subject of biology. Is willing to help students but you have to ask! Read read read the book...and you will do fine. Fun fieldtrips if you get to go on one. He is kinda cute too.

Andy clearly loves bio and teaching. He makes the class fun and learned the names of the whole class (50 people). He's a committed teacher, but expects you to be committed too... "This is a MAJORS class... bla bla" :-) His expectations were clear, but I would have appreciated scheduled exams.

Andy is the man!As long as your not a lazy pile you will do good.And by not being a lazy pile I mean study hard. Ya it's a tough subject, it wan't meant to be easy,but Andy makes it easier to enjoy becuase he actually enjoy's the subject. Unlike most teachers he is way energetic and willing to go the extra mile to help you out,it's hard,so study!

Dr. Holycross is one of the few professor I've had that not only loves teaching, and knows the subject very well, but also did a great job at explaining the more difficult concenpts when I went to his office hours. He inspired me throughout the entire semeter, and now, more than ever I know that Biology is what I absolutely LOVE!

He is a cool guy. In my opinion he needs to keep in mind that most students that come through his class are dental or medical hopefulls. His scientific paper he makes you do is worth way too many points and he grades it very harshly! Overall it is a hard subject and you need to expect many hours studying however, he is a good teacher.

Andy was a great teacher...i have taken this class three times and he was the one that actually cared about educating his students and helping us pass as long as we put forth the effort...i would recommend him to my friends...

The class is hard, READ THE TEXTBOOK. I took him as my teacher because I talked to him outside of class, and he obviously loves biology, and you NEED a professor who's interesting. Don't be scared of the scientific paper, just meet with him and get feedback, or else you'll be complaining like the other people.

Great teacher! Truly loves science. The class is very tough, you will have to work very hard for a good grade. Lots of reading and studying, MUST attend class and lab. Dr. Holycross is available for help, don't wait till the end and scramble for help. If you work hard and go to class you will suceed.

Completely awesome! Just read the chapters before class, study what he tells you to and stay awake in class (which isn't too hard). He's interesting, very helpful and organized.

He is very outgoing & wants to connect with the students to make the class and lab more enjoyable. It is very hard so STUDY like mad (he'll mention this in the beginning). I have enjoyed his class and him; not to mention his looks! note: Start the Scientific paper EARLY to get it perfected!!

Prof H is a passionate teacher. He loves his job working with students. He is straight forward. Tells it like it is. His grading scale is generous for the class. Lab attendance is a must. He does not hold your hand by giving study guides. His tests are difficult if you have no comprehesion of the subject matter. Cramming NOT recommended.

I can openly admit that I hated Bio before Andy. But now I find it to be interesting and fun all becuase he is such an amazing teacher. It's a fairly hard class but for some reason he makes all that bareable becuase he's such a good nice guy that will go the extra mile to help.

1st, Anybody willing to put their rep on the line like this is cool. 2nd, Andy is one of the better professors I've had. As a "professional" student I feel qualified to make that statement. He has a rare combination of knowledge, passion, and empathy that makes his teaching style a cut above the norm. And I FAILED - still like the guy. Great Prof.

Holycross is the best teacher I've ever had. He loves his job (and snakes!) Ew. I would highly recommend him for teaching this class. Be sure to read your textbook and have him read your scientific paper many times before turning it in. Also study his practice tests! (They're REALLY simmilar to the real ones.)

This class is HARD. if you are looking for an easy class, do not take this one. but if you study and listen, you may actually learn something. take his advice though, and take chemistry first or you probably won't get an A. plus he's an awesome, really really fun teacher :)

ya. he was not too tough but quick with his teaching. Had powerpoints in every class. His tests were hard. Definetly download his powerpoints, read the book, and attend every class. He gives extra credit at the end of the semester for attending every class. and extra credit throughout the sem. And he wasn't bad looking either

Andy is a great teacher that loves his job and goes out of his way to help his students. However his class is HARD!!!!! The only thing i think he could have done better was not rushing through the chapters so fast and also NOT GIVING A TEST FIRST THING BACK AFTER A WEEK OFF (spring break)! But hes hot so its okay!

Andy is a great professor. If you like biology and ask alot of questions the class wont seem very hard. Pay attention during lecture, he tends to emphasize tough questions on the test. I just wish he taught BIO182.

His test are hard but everything on them he covers. my biggest mistake was not expecting subjects covered in lab to be on the test. theres no homework so thats cool. he is agood teacher but you if you want to pass you have to know the material covered

awesome prof! i personally did not find the tests all that hard. they definitely make you think, but if you pay attention in class and read the book you'll be fine. he is really good about explaining stuff you are unclear on, as well as posting practice tests and having review sessions before exams.

Best Prof I've ever had. Andy gives you all of the resources you need to pass the class. If you read the chapter before lecture and don't try to take notes during, he clarifies everything. Study the practice tests and ask questions. Lab info is on the tests so don't miss lab!! If you don't go to class and you try to cram, you will fail.

Fair and to the point. Knowledgeable about what he teaches. Open-minded and truly caring about his students succeeding. Totally recommended.

Very detailed class and exams. Lots of people did not make it through the semester, but if your going to continue your education with medicine or biology then I suggest this class. You will leave with a good understanding! Awesome guy too!

The course is hard, its biology. But having Andy as a professor makes it easy to get help if you want it. He also clears things up in lecture. He is an AWESOME teacher. If you can request a professor for biology, I highly recommend him! (plus hes nice to look at too!!) :D

Very good teacher. I always printed out the powerpoints, becasue otherwise I would have been very lost. He is helpful if there are any questions, even if it makes the lectures a little behind. Very smart guy!

If you're majoring in biology, are a nursing or pre-med student, this class is for you. You will walk away w/tons of knowledge. I'm not going to lie. His test are tough, but if you willing to put the time, effort and attend class you'll be fine. He clarifies things well and makes learning Biology fun. He also takes the time to help you if you don't understand the material. Which is a + to me.

Andy Holycross is the bomb-diggety. He is a very good teacher. I'm gonna admit, I'm not the studying kind of guy, and even here I didn't study that much, and I still got an A. Tests check for competency and a slight inclination for detail. Pay attention in lectures and you'll do just fine. Study in groups with smarter students. It helps.

Very good professor but you better be ready to work don't take him if your looking for an easy. The exams are hard, but he gives quizzes in Lab and online that are easier and help balance out the exams. Also offered is extra credit and a papers that will help you improve your grade if your not test taker.

Awesome teacher! Very difficult exams but don't give up even if you do poorly on the first couple of exams. Exams are only worth 50% of total grade and the other 50% of points are pretty easy if you just take some time and put a little effort into it. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT OFFERED!! It was the difference between an A and a B for me.Great teacher!

Great teacher, go to class EVERY lecture AND EVERY lab, it's important. Take every extra credit oppurtunity and create a study group for EVERY test, read ALL the notes, pay attention to EVERY test question and study your butt off, it'll be worth it, wish I had studied a bit more, think it would've earned me that extra half a percent! High expectations. Very helpful (esp. in office hrs if u go) and pretty clear explanations. Funny too. High dropout rate, but the whiners simply don't study or are just plain dumb. Tests reasonable if u studied.

Professor Holycross is a pretty cool guy to talk to and he is passionate about his teaching. He teaches by lecture (reading off powerpoint)Expect to study AT LEAST an Hour each day out of class his tests are HARD!!! Class averages were always in the low 60's. Extra credit was available but difficult and TIME CONSUMING.

I had Andy for 181, and 182. He is a fun guy who loves to tell stories and he uses fun analogies; however, he forgets to teach the material properly on hand. Instead of taking pride in his students doing well, he takes pride in proving how much more he knows than his students...which means his exams are pretty tricky.

His tests are hard. There is no homework or quizzes so all of your grade is based off of those hard tests although there are a few opportunities for extra credit. Use the book. He's very approachable if you need help. I had a tremendous crush on him all through the class. :)

Very clear & entertaining lectures. Tests are exactly 50% of your grade. Tons of extra credit. Dr. H. doesn't hold your hand and has high standards... so be prepared to study your a$$ off. Slackers, do not take this guy!! You cannot pass without reading the book and doing all the work outside of class. If you want to learn biology, take him.

Andy is a great teacher, but unless you are willing to STUDY your life away don't take this class. There is way too much to learn and you can't slack off and expect a good grade. He offers really weird extra credit but it's there if you're willing. I pulled off an A. However, I literally studied about 5 hours PER lecture hour. My brain hurt!

A lot of people thought this class what hard. I didn't think so though. His questions were fair and he told you ahead of time what to expect on the test. He also gives you the option of a "do or die" if you are failing the class you can take this special final and the grade you get on the final is what you get in the class. Weird but cool.

By far my favorite professor at this school so far...Knowledgeable and fun!! Good sense of humor. Also teaches at ASU.

Andy is an awesome teacher! i have failed this course before but after taking his class i understood everything much clearer and he takes his time detailing more then the book. he is a funny chilled guy and has funny but educational extra credits. he can grow an awesome beard

This class was awesome! Dr. Holycross is a fun professor and really knows what he's talking about. Tests are hard so really study!! Also, do the scientific paper early! It's 20% of your grade and it's not that hard to write. He's very helpful so if you need things clarified just talk to him.

By far one of my favorite teachers. He's very helpful, friendly and a fair grader. His tests are wordy, but you get used to it. DEFINITELY take him for Bio!

Loved this class! Dr Holycross is a very knowledgable instructor and is very patient. He knows that this course contains a lot of difficult content and he brakes it down so you can comprehend and apply the information not just recite a definition when asked. His tests make you think so make sure you can apply the info you learn!

He is a really good teacher. He is almost always open to help. He offers himself to help all the time and it is wise to use it. The class is challenging, and you will have to study. He knows the material well, and he can answer pretty much any question. He is very passionate about his job, and makes learning enjoyable and fun.

Great Teacher. Passionate Makes Class Fun/Interesting. Talks about things that shouldnt be talked about in that class though, Religion etc. Its biology, not religons, and it is not the place for his opinion.

Most helpful professor I've had. Very available for students. Laid back & is very fair in grading. The COURSE ITSELF is difficult no matter who you take; his teaching style does not increase that difficulty, in fact his lectures make learning the material easier! Attendance mandatory, but that shouldn't bother you because he's nice to look at. =)

Dr. Holycross is by far one of the best instructors at MCC. Helpful and full of knowledge. Anything bad said about the bio classes he teaches, is because of the material itself. The class is HARD. A lot of REAL learning to do. His tests are formatted to really test you. Use the practice tests and for Darwin's sake :) do ALL of the extra cred given.

Excellent teacher, he tells it like it is and is actually interested in the success of the students. as others have said this is a difficult class no matter who you take it from, so take it from someone who's fun and willing to help. Just be willing to put in the work if you want a good grade. I highly recommend Dr Holycross.

Excellent teacher! Very knowledgeable and dedicated to his students. The class is by no means easy, and if you do not read the text book prior to lectures, you probably won't understand. But the class is definitely worthwhile!

One of, scratch that, *the* best biology teacher I've had. Knows his stuff, knows about teaching, and combines the two very well. Lectures are very informative and critical to not miss. Labs are very well done and do not waste your time.

Andy obviously loves what he does and said he was always there to help if you go see him, however, He is the HARDEST teacher !! I think he forgets that most people in there are taking the class because we have to have Bio 181! There is so much information and he expects you should know everything! No STUDY GUIDE for quizes or exams! Beware!

Awesome! Andrew is a passionate teacher & really cares how students do. He's down to earth and doesn't talk down to you like many teachers do. It is a tough class & lab attendance is required. He kept it fun, but has high expectations. Tough exams, but they aren't most of the grade. The key is reading the chapters (duh)... & attending.

Retook after getting a D last semester. There's no two ways about it. The class is not easy, but he makes it as easy as he can. Show up to the lectures, do well on the paper (20% of your grade), do all the homeworks, and do the only homework. HE also offers 5% extra credit on every test. I would recommend taking him.

Intro to Biology was a tough class, but I think that is just the nature of the content. Dr. Holycross makes the information very accessible and is obviously passionate about his field. Dr Andrew Holycross is hands down the best science teacher I have every had. Warning!: Do not take this class if you don't want to challenge yourself and/or are just there for an easy grade. Over half of the students will drop or transfer. If you are up for the challenge, Andy is the man to help you learn science. Plus his stories are interesting!

Learned a ton. Teaches in a way that you have to go a step beyond just memorizing to knowing how things work and why they work like they do. You can tell he's passionate about science. I rented the digital version of the book--DO the modules BEFORE taking the tests and also find the answers to the end of chapter questions at the back of the book.

He is great, I wish he taught more classes, as I would take any class he taught. He is personable, intelligent, and funny. He finds a way to blend it together to make a great lecture and one of the best lab experiences I have had.

All that is on tests is on powerpoint and explained in lecture. Recording doesn't let info slip through cracks. He wants you to succeed. He inspires me to do better. And he likes hunting!!!

Dr. Holycross is a great instructor! Be ready to read & pay attention to the detail during lectures. He does not offer study guides; your notes from lecture are your guides. Don't skip class and PAY ATTENTION! He does offer extra credit for his exams but he makes you work for it. Really nice person and has a lot to offer those willing to learn!

Andrew was recommended to me by another biology major who currently works for ADOT. If you have no chemistry background, this course may be slightly more challenging for you. He answers questions very clearly. He is a funny guy. If you love reptiles like I do, take his class.

I have a longing to continue learning from him and I am saddened at the reality that I won't have him as a teacher again. Really passionate, hilarious, knows his stuff! He is an actual BIOLOGIST so if you like that stuff, you'll like him. You need to put EFFORT for his class. You need to understand the material in an applicable way. Tests are hard so use the powerpoints, read the chapters, and see him in office hours. That really helps. Eliminates high error-rate Q's.

Dr. Holycross was one of the better professors I've had. He taught the information very well, and I enjoyed going to lectures and lab. If you put in the effort, you will do well. He gives points back for high-error exam questions and offers up to 5 points in extra credit for each exam. He was always willing to help.

Mr. Holycross is an excellent teacher. His lectures combined with PowerPoints and handouts make for a great learning experience. He explains things clearly and is patient. Expect to read your textbook or you will not pass the class. He does not take attendance but if you miss too many classes you will miss vital information.

Holycross is a super chill professor. Lectures are super heavy, theres information coming at you the whole time. I would honestly not remember a thing when i would leave but just be proud of myself for going! Tests are challenging if you don't study. YOU MUST STUDY. Lab is super easy. Andrew is extremely passionate about biology, which made me look forward to going to his class. Lectures aren't mandatory, but he often gives example test questions in lecture that are helpful. The course is fast-paced and also incorporates a lot of chemistry. Andrew wants you to succeed and is very approachable for help on difficult concepts.

His tests are really hard. They are designed to test your knowledge not your memorization. Lecture is not mandatory but I recommend going. Lab however is mandatory. Make sure you take your Scientific paper to him throughout the semester, he will make sure you get an A paper.

Dr Holycross is debatably my favorite I've ever had, and I've always connected with my teachers. He is tough, and you do need the book (the mastering bio will help you, but is NOT necessary). Bio 181 is for science majors, so don't skip class, ask questions (he loves questions, is very passionate and honest). Has EC every exam (+5%, but difficult)

Getting a good grade in this class requires a lot of studying on your own part, but Dr. Holycross gets a lot of information across in lectures. The workload is next to nothing, but that means the grade is heavily reliant on the exams. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit and tutoring that I highly recommend taking advantage of.

Dr. Holycross likes to scare you at the start of the semester that you won't pass. It's off putting and I personally didn't like him from that first impression. As a teacher, I'd highly recommend him since he knows his stuff. I rarely used the text, I'd suggest MasteringBiology with the etext instead. His tests are based mainly on his powerpoints.

Holycross is very passionate about Biology and that helps him inspire you to learn about biology. Personally I find Biology interesting, but he made it even more so. He was very good at explaining the ore concepts of Biology and he is very caring. He is very organized and knows how to teach.

Dr. Holycross is a good instructor, but his exams are tough if you haven't grasped the concept. For that, I'd recommend attending his lectures even though they aren't required. If you're having trouble, go to his office during office hours, which helps a lot. He makes the lectures a little fun and interesting. He also gives good, clear feedback.

One of the easiest classes I have taken. His class is not hard just take proper notes from lecture and the textbook. Be ready to study for the exams, one tip I should add find a study group it really helps a lot! Labs are very straight forward and easy. Also in doing the scientific paper he gives you great feed back to get an A on it! Extra Credit!

I have learned so much from him! I have to admit that his frequent tests are often very challenging. However, if you want to learn something, i dare say, theres no better professor. I didnt expect to learn this much, this deep over one class in this short period of time. His lectures has been supplementing my biochemistry class very well.

Holycross is the best professor Ive had recently. His tests are definitely hard and make you thoroughly understand the content but he is fair in that he takes off the high error rate questions which bumps your test score. BUY MASTERING BIO ONLINE! For the lab, make sure you dont procrastinate on the scientific paper and you will succeed!

The hardest class I've ever taken, but I learned so much. He offers lots of extra credit & drops high error questions on exams. Make sure to study like crazy for tests (& quizzes too) because they're hard & what determines your grade. Online quizzes are timed. He's always available in office hours for feedback & help. First time in college and he was a fantastic professor. My advice is to stay on top of your reading because the online quizzes could make or break your grade. Pay attention and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Dr. Holycross is the best professor you will ever get at MCC & beyond. I wasn't very good at Bio, but the man is a master in BIO & in helping you succeed. Take him and follow every single instruction. I Love everything about the class, including his no-nonsense polices. I will say this again, save money, learn, & have a taste of "Master class".

Highest quality bio teacher I've ever seen before. He goes above and beyond, inside and outside the classroom to assure success in his students. Very passionate and knowledgeable in his field. Take this professor if you wish to succeed.

Tests can be tough, but if you put forth the time and effort, Andy is a fantastic professor with a great story. Mastering and etext are very helpful but I wouldn't say it's mandatory. He clearly wants everyone to do well, so do your work and you will succeed.

I took Dr. Holycross in person before the pandemic at MCC. He made the class fun and it was never a bore when we were in class. The exams and practicals were pretty straightfoward and he was always open to discuss your grade when needed. Also beware there is an essay that is a big chunk of your grade! But you have time and partners to do it.

Professor Holycross is one of those professors that will really take the extra mile to make sure you understand his lectures. In the semester that I've had him, I found that if I required help in understanding a concept in class, Mr. Holycross would take said concept, break it down piece by piece, and make it simple enough to comprehend.

I took this class as a core requirement but the quality of Holycross' teaching nearly made me fall in love with biology. Yes, it is a difficult course, and doing it online doesn't help, but this will easily be one of my favorite non-major courses of my college career. And thanks to the curve, I managed an A. I just so badly wish he also taught 182.

Dr. H was the bomb dot com Took his class on my own time, and his lectures had some solid jokes. Dude is a real class act too. Encourages office hours. Tests are relatively difficult, but that is in line with the material and don't cover what we don't learn. Labs were not really required as most quizzes could be done w/o them. Overall, Great Prof!!

Andy was a phenomenal professor! He really takes the time to go through any questions you have regarding content or biology in general. He is very easily accessible and offers tons of opportunities to meet with him virtually to get assistance. His lectures are your main study guides really, but the textbook is also somewhat important 10/10 love him

I was failing the class until I showed up to online office hours. Those are CRUCIAL to passing if you're not a BIO god. He tells you EXACTLY how to pass his class in his syllabus. Went out of his way while on Holiday to make office hours happen. Will NEVER make you feel dumb for not understanding simple concepts. 10/10

Took BIO181 in person for spring and loved this class. There is no way for you to fail his course unless you don't show up to lab. Everything you need to know comes from lecture for his tests. Would highly recommend taking his in person class :)

Incredibly knowledgeable. Class is lecture heavy; plan time to watch the videos and take detailed notes. Lots of content; make flashcards and study aids. Prof encourages questions in office hours. Videos (viewed 2x speed) and PPT make great test review. Tests are tough and require thorough understanding of info presented in lectures.

Holycross was great! I took his BIO 181 hybrid course. There is no homework, it's mostly quizes and exams. He always made class interesting and engageing.This proffesor is more than happy to help you, he always encourages his students to ask questions and has open office hours. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Took BIO 181 in person my first semester and loved this class. Dr. Holycross is an exceptional professor. Labs are easygoing and enjoyable with some solid jokes. Dr. H. provides great feedback on what to know for tests, drops high rate error questions and gives extra credit. Course does cover lots of chemistry but I recommend utilizing office hrs.

Awesome professor! Highly recommend! Listen to the lectures and take notes! Quizzes and exams require you to do a little critical thinking. I honestly wish he was my professor on the rest of my science classes. I thought this was going to be difficult online, but he made it doable.

Holycrosss' personality really uplifted the whole experience. He frequently shared stores, knowledge, and even brought snakes into class! One time, a student brought him Starbucks and he exclaimed "my nectar!" upon receiving it. Anyway, in lab, teamwork is central and if you want to pass then you have to put in the work to understand the material.
