Exams are difficult, no cheat sheet allowed, and the sample questions that TAs gave were not relevant to the exam. Lots of homework, and so hard, 30% people prefer give up. Most homeworks are not relevant to class.

Horrible. Lectures couldn't be any more boring, recitations are worthless, and homeworks are endless. Not attending office hours means you won't pass guaranteed. His test cases arent even the same as the autograder's and his lecture material wont help at all with the extra lengthy homeworks. Avoid at all costs if you have no experience with C++.

I'm gonna start off by saying this class is called "Data Structures" not "runtime". Recitations are useless. The lectures put you to sleep, there is no active learning. The jump from lecture to the assignments is ridiculous. The assignments are convoluted and boring. He writes dependent tests on the autograder which is just him being lazy.

Amazing lecture. He is the greatest professor of all times. Realistic expectation and interesting homeworks!

Andrew Hughes it without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. He teaches nothing in lecture and it's dull and impossible to follow. His homeworks take a ridiculous amount of time and assume far greater knowledge in the material than what he teaches you. The exams are insanely hard and if you make one mistake you utterly bomb. Depressing.

he did know how to arrange his lecture and homework. did not explain the homework in detail after that which it even harder and useless for his course. his final exam is also very hard. if he can't teach, he should take a break and leave the school.

Doesn't understand that this material does not come easily to everyone. he did not spend time helping his students succeed. lecture activities were unreasonably difficult. what were on exams & quizes were not taught to be applied. he was insensitive to personal emergencies was terrible at communicating through email. overall poor instructor.

Horrible professor and horrible person. Honestly. I would avoid him in any and every situation. Our sixth week of class he gave us a homework assignment that was the FINAL assignment for students taking the same class last semester because he's angry no one shows up to his useless lectures, and predicted only 10% of students would complete it.

Andrew Hughes is an awful lecturer who appears to be perfectly willing to write an insanely unfair test where the average is 40% and then refuses to curve it. While at the same time never releasing course material on time and if he does it is riddled with mistakes. However, speaking with him is a pleasure and he is quite a nice person to talk to.

Hughes is a very nice person, but he cannot release an assignment on time for the life of him. His assignments are always late, with no shifted deadlines to match the release time. He also has released multiple buggy/unclear assignments. Basically, halve the time before the due date and that's when the assignment will be released and fixed.

Awful lecturer. Lectures are incredibly boring, and his attitude seems as though he doesn't want to be there. The main problem is his grading. He offers awful solution tests in which his mistakes will cost you points because he doesn't do anything about it. When your midterm receives an average of 40% the problem is you, Andrew; not your students.

He does not know how to teach. All of my friend fails and it's too late for us to change our majors. I think he should be teaching CSE 115 so people can have time to decided to change major or not. If you score less than 50% on the final you will going to fail, and the final is way harder than midterm.

Yeah he was not that great of a teacher. Dry humor in lectures that never landed and very hard to focus. I only passed cause I re-watched every lecture and forced myself to focus. Hardest 3 days of the semester lol. HOWEVER he is a good guy and he's approachable, just not that helpful.

He is very nice in person, but he does not care about students. He curves just for his behalf not failing the majority.

Very solid professor that has more than hundreds of students to teach, this creates unfair advantages.

If you have him, transfer out as soon as possible or you might get a chance to retake and fail again.

To be fair with this professor, he is a research person not teaching person.

The thing he is doing well enough is to ousting people, for example you could easily consume 3 hours waiting in his office hours.

Remember you are in CSE, UB's most awful department which fails a lot of people like you and you don't get to choose for your justice. One day the school will realize how bad the department is to hire this professor. There will be eventually justices for students.

This guy doesn't answer any questions on piazza. He doesn't care about 396. Promises things but never delivers. Doesn't grade hw, the 5th hw was already due and we only have our grades for homework 1. impossible to study if we dont know what we are doing right or wrong. Impossible to reach because he doesn't answer anything. so frustrating.

Dry lecturer but his office hours are good. He never does anything on time. Homeworks are graded weeks after the deadline. Exams are also worth 50-60% of your grade with brutal grading, such as multiple answers where you get 0 if you miss one (no partial credit). The average last semester was 40% on the exams. Very disorganized and hard class.

Very dry speaker and often seems unplanned going into the lecture. Homeworks are not too difficult but are time-consuming and aren't worth all that much towards your grade.

This is now my second time in a Professor Hughes course and he has yet again proven that albeit he's a brilliant man , he has 0 idea how to translate his knowledge for students who are new to the subject. Instead of doing test prep he spews theorem that holds no value. No practice exams, passive aggression at all times. Ignores Piazza

Unfortunately, for this critical CS topic (Data Structures), the material presented is often shallow and/or wrong. Unless you gain expertise on your own thru self-study, the chance of failure is very high. Stay away at all costs

Probably the most boring teacher and toughest grader I've had to be fair.

I don't know why the school still has him teaching. This man give shallow explanations but in-depth homework/test questions. He doesn't answer any of your questions and you never know the status of your grades because he takes so long to grade anything. If you want pass a class and understand what you're learning, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.

I can't comprehend why Professor Hughes hasn't changed his teaching methods, or why the University hasn't forced him to. The entire class structure and learning methods are flawed, and he is not receptive to criticism. I'm usually weary of Rate my Professor, because of vitriolic students that did poorly, but in this case, they are correct.

Dont listen to geniuses talking here, no discrimination shall be made to protect this bad Professor.

Just take his CSE 250 class because it is mandatory CS subject. It is the final exam that kills you no matter if you got 100% in anything else. He is someone who sets things in the last minute. Horribly disorganized, good luck to all when taking this course or his other classes which is not recommended though.

Hughes is horribly disorganized. He has mandatory pre-lecture videos that is uploaded into various units at the same time. He makes us do reading assignments before class and his live lectures in the morning is a waste of time considering the fact that he spends 10m to review a question that he overcomplicated.

He is one of those professors that seem to only care about failing the students and not teaching.

You're going to love the vagueness of his project handouts. There's nothing better than 200 students on Piazza collectively trying to figure out what specific parts of a handout mean because Hughes doesn't like to make very important steps clear!

Graders are never up. Homework gets graded weeks after it's due. TAs are bad and rarely answer to questions on piazza. He always gives vague responses to questions. and his assignments are vaguely written too. Midterm exam was fair.

Awful. I am telling you find another way it's not worth it. Is not clear at all about what is expected of you, takes forever to grade even though there are 15+ TAs, and gives the vaguest possible answers. Also, if you ask something that he feels he covered somewhere else he will tell you watch last week's lecture rather than simply answering. F+

I don't have words to describe such a type of professor. He is just wasting his and everyone's time by teaching the course. The most lazy person committing the most mistake -> take this professor and just ruin your career and dreams. I will NEVER EVER recommend any human being to take him as a professor. Please watch free youtube videos instead :(

One of the worst teachers in the dept. Exams are stupid easy. The homework isn't hard but so much vital information is left out of the handouts and you only get 5 submissions on auto grader that run out fast. You probably have to take him, just do your work early and spam piazza for information that should be in the handout from the beginning.

The absolute worst part of the entire CS department at this school. No matter how well you do in the class, if you get below a 50 on the final you'll automatically fail the class. The worst part is that he is very boring, very unhelpful, and just a horrible professor.

His final exams are vacuous and he expects us to answer the way he wants or else it's wrong.

Never replies, not helpful, can't teach, slow, lazy, and exams do not make any sense.

He failed to make it clear that we would fail the class if we got under a 50 on the final. Like 1/3 the class failed just from the final....

Hughes is extremely unorganized, data structures are important for your career and if you rely on solely his teaching when you take this class, you will fail this course and in interviews. If you can take 250 somewhere else for credit, PLZ TRY. He knows what he is talking about but not how to teach. His exams are open notes and ppl still fail.

As an intro compsci course, this was horribly structured online. From confusing lab sections and unhelpful TAs to vague lectures, this class was not a great learning experience & introduction to compsci, as Ill probably never take another compsci class again. Professor Hughes does not know how to teach an intro class to people new to the topic.

Andrew Hughes is not teaching CSE 250 in fall 2021. The department in fact will introduce a new format of CSE 250. Andrew Hughes was mediocre at best when he was teaching this difficult class. His test is difficult, but it is an open note. I wish he made this exam open book if he was planning to make the final difficult.
