Is one of my favorite teachers of all time was fun, interesting and above all made the information stick. Also was a great person to talk to.
Fun, interesting and above all informative, I couldn't recommend this Professor with any more enthusiasm. Discussions are topical and impossible to ignore, questions are answered without the student feeling idiotic for asking and you could learn the recipe for the mysterious WWII Best of All Possible Tacos, served with sauerkraut.
He is a wonderful teacher and makes Philosophy FUN. I took him for Critical Reasoning and I really enjoyed his class. He makes the material fun and the in-class discussions really help to ensure that the information is understandable. His tests and assignments are not easy but certainly worth the effort. I would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. J.C. is awesome. He looks like Conan O'brien and has some mannerisms of Stewie Griffin. Honestly though, he's a terrific teacher. 3 tests, 3 essays, all challenging, but doable. I'm a philosophy major though, so just make sure you're ready to work if you're not.
Great teacher!! I learned so much in this class. Finally a class that really challenges COC students to use our brains! It's really not as scary or hard as many think. As long as you do the work and put forth the effort, you'll do well. He is very clear on his expectations and his quirkiness makes class interesting. Take this class!
is good, but way to much reading required and two picky when he grades questions on tests, very hard tests, a lot of work but doable
Do NOT take his class, unless you want to FAIL! He's lectures are weird and he talks about things as if he's on drugs or something. He's a harsh grader, if he doesn't agree with your philosophy... guess what? Yeah, u guessed it. I highly DON'T recommend!
Great teacher :-) Take him for logic. One of the best teachers I have ever had. Also one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. You will learn alot. A friend of mine took him for introduction to philosophy and said it really prepared her for the college classes she is taking now.
Awsome! i really recommend him, I took philo 106 and his lectures really helped me out.He goes over the examples in the book and it really helps you prepare for his tests. His tests can be kinda difficult but not horrible. He says funny random stuff, rarely got bored in his class..I highly recomend!
Classic. This guys a riot. and a great teacher. Excellent knowledge of the subject.
This is an extremely challenging class, but that is because Ethics is an extremely deep subject, not because of poor teaching. More such a difficult subject, he does a fantastic job of guiding you through it and I feel I learned more in this class than any other that I have ever taken. And I took it online!
Easy online class, keep up with the weekly assignments and ask him if you have any questions. He is good about responding to emails. an easy class
Dr. Cathcart was a great teacher! His class is not easy, his lectures are from the reading and he writes notes on the board instead of powerpoint. He does essays and his tests are made up of multiple choice and short answer. Overall he's a great teacher and hilarious! I had so much fun in his class.
online class. Class is worth taking. Avg. class scores are in the B range. He drops your worst test score. Like I do for all my classes, I purchased the previous addition to save money. It works everytime. Take him if you need this course. Well worth it.
This teacher is awesome, one of my favorite professors ever. He answers questions outside of class, helps lead philosophy club, and is overall a great teacher. Won't hold it against you if you're late or miss class, but you'll miss the quizzes (10% of grade) in the beginning of class, at least for this class.
This is one of the best teachers if you want to learn a lot from a Philosophy class. His classes are very entertaining so you will not likely get bored and he constantly makes you think outside the box, had him for Phil 210, 101 (online) and now 230 and it keeps being great! His tests are kinda hard but the trick is to read the book and take notes!
Took him for Ethics online. You have to read the textbook and take good notes (or have really good memory). If you do this, and understand the material, you will do well. It is a fast paced class so be sure to keep up. He is very helpful and very involved. I would have wanted to take him for a regular lecture class.
Absolutely one of the best teachers. I took one class and then looked for other classes he taught. Liked the full class participation. Note, if you want to fully enjoy his classes make sure to read the required text otherwise you can't join in on the lively conversations!
Cathcart is one out of the box thinker and a great philosopher! His classes are all interesting and make you think in obscure ways. He is a very funny, likable guy and he will give you a good grade if you do the work. Take a lot of notes and make sure you review the study guide before each test and you'll be fine!
Took him for both symbolic logic and ethics. Incredibly brilliant and hilarious teacher and a nice guy to boot. His classes are not easy but that is because he intends for you to really learn the material. On the final paper I had computer problems, I explained to him my situation and he gave me an extension even though it was the last day of class
Dr. Jones-Cathcart is one of the best philosophy teachers on campus. He's a very funny and down to earth person. His class is somewhat hard, but if you do all the reading and come prepared each day you will pass.
Very easy book. Lively discussions. Clearly presented assignments at the start of the course. He makes himself available for extra help as needed. A very good teacher. I'd take him again.
He goes "Hmmmmmmmm" while sitting in the thinking man position alot. Love it. Just read, take the exams and write the papers--youll be good. Its hard but worth it. Very interesting lecturer.
112 is History of Contemporary Philosophy. His explanations are clear and concise, which is something considering the often complicated subject matter. The man is funny, if sometimes a tad profane. Human sort of fellow, approachable. Tests are mainly short answer/essay, with some multi choice. Don't plan on skating through his class. Recommended.
Class was a breeze and I loved every minute of it. He's down to earth, funny, and gets to know his students. Read the Textbook and any other assigned reading, take notes, and look over the notes before tests and you'll do fine in class. I would love to take him again.
Jones-Cathcart is by far my favorite teacher on campus at COC. I've taken several of his classes and they definitely aren't easy A's, but he notices if you put in the effort. Just do all the assignments and you'll be fine. He is really interesting and I never get bored during his lectures. Recommend!!
Dr. Andrew Jones-Catchart is positively top-shelf.
He was alright. He was very clear but taught straight from the text so this made the class extremely slow and boring. He makes a lot of jokes which are funny, but he seems to be more occupied with making the class laugh then actually getting through the material quickly.
Good book. Good teacher. Quirky, but entertaining, effective. Assignments require some time, but if you put the time in, his grading is pretty lenient. Just do all the assigned work and you'll get a good grade. Invest! Meet with him out of class. Very interesting and interested in the student.
Great teacher he talks alot but the things he says applies to what hes teaching, intelligent man, made it easy
Wow what a cool teacher! Tests can be hard but as long as you study you will do good! He makes lecture very interesting and fun! He has a great sense of humor, excellent teacher i highly recommend!
easy A class. Talks constantly and gets sidetracked easily in class discussions. Will spout nonsense for an entire class. The critical thinking class bored me to tears. Great teacher for the subject matter though and it is extremely easy to get an A with little effort. I never studied for a test and still got a very high A
I had never taken a philosophy class and 1st day I was pretty intimidated. I sat in back and Dr JC would look right at me as he spoke while walking around. Once I got the hang of the class style and sat in the front, the semester was a breeze. The material is pretty easy if you pay attention everyday. Only used textbook in class. Dr JC is cool
He is simply amazing!! I learned a lot in his class and really want to major in Philosophy! He's also the Philosophy chair and leads our discussions and always includes everyone. He's extremely funny and smart!
Best teacher and very intelligent.
Wonderful teacher. Communicates everything clearly, gives great lectures, leads interesting discussions, and his tests are very fair. Some of the subject material in Contemporary Moral Dilemmas could get rather uncomfortable, but I still remember the class very fondly simply because he was such a great teacher.
Took PHILOS 101 online. Professor was fair with grading and the material was easy to find. I personally didn't find the subject very interesting but the class is a breeze if you read the assigned material and can make a compelling argument in favor of your opinion. Very open and positive.
I didnt really find the subject interesting and it is somewhat difficult to understand. Professor is good, understanding and fair. Takes forever to grade tests, paper and discussions.
So, I went into this class thinking it was going to be horrible. I had zero interest in the subject. That changed. You know when you have a great professor when they can completely change your mindset on the subject and make it incredibly fun and interesting. Brilliant professor. Very nice and helpful. Take this class with him!
I had him for philosophy 106 last semester. He's a good professor and definitely knows what he's talking about. But however I didn't like how he talked alot about political stuff. It wasn't a political science class it's a philosophy class. Lectures are pretty boring but easy. He's not too hard
Okay so jones-cathcart is a very nice guy however he didn't make philosophy that easy to understand for me and hes not very helpful if you need help. The course consists of 5 tests and a paper and THATS IT! His tests are not easy either so if you fail his test, you fail the class. nothing really to help the grade. good luck!!
Jones-Cathcart made philosophy really fun. He uses really funny, clear examples to get points across. Philosophy is hard, but he really makes the effort to help you understand the concepts. Available to talk outside of class or through email. Made lots of comments on papers and went over tests in class. Definitely interested in philosophy now.
The discussion boards for this class are easy. But overall, this class is a lot of work. The tests are extremely difficult and take up most of your grade. I'm sure the professor offers more help if the class was in person, but not really online. So if you really want to challenge yourself, take this class.
There was no real way on how to properly prepare for the test, and they differed from one another each time. The professor appeared to be helpful on anything not related to Philosophy. I don't think online and on campus courses should be any different from each other. Being nice or good are two different things. Not what I was expecting.
The professors test were hard and challenges you, your grade is represented by the test. I dont recomend him as an online professor,I studied hard and had a hard time with it. Also I had a hard time preparing myself and how to do better for next test when O still dont have all my test scores back. If you want to be REALLY challenged he is the one!
I'm taking an online course and this teacher gives 3 tests 7 discussions and 2 papers. The discussions are easy, other than that this teachers' grading method just sucks. The tests require a couple of essay responses and is timed. And the tests are pretty much your overall grade of the class. He does not teach and seems a bit unorganized.
Taking online and really like it. Answers email quickly. His lectures and other course materials are very useful. The tests are a part of the grade, but so are the discussions and papers, and since it's philosophy, you're going to be challenged to think outside the box. Professor gives lots of feedback on papers and tests. Highly recommended.
Do your reading. I loved this class, he's a great professor. He takes the time to write out his lectures to accompany the reading from the book. Tests were challenging, but if you did the reading, should come easy.
I had a great time in this course. I felt that Dr. Jones-Cathcart taught the subject very well and clearly. He is happy to answer questions during the class and after. Your grade is based on the tests, but if you study and do the homework you can do well. Great professor!
Hated philosophy before this class because of a bad teacher. With his fantastic philosophical ideas, Cathcart showed me what philosophy is really about. His passion shows through his extremely interesting lectures. If you read the required readings (book & lectures), you will ace this class and learn a lot about philosophy.
Simply fantastic. Engaging, intelligent, passionate. Lectures are an enlightening and informative experience. Class discussions are frequent and very helpful for really understanding the material. It's not easy, but if you make the effort to engage in discussions and pay close attention, you will do fine.
Awesome professor! This was the first class that I took at COC, since I am a full time student at AVC, and I was surprised at how understanding and helpful he was. I would recommend taking his class if you want to actually learn! (this is what we pay for, isn't it?) Just make sure to read the textbooks, and you'll pass with no problem!!
Extremely intelligent, very personable, and hilarious to boot. Between his eloquence and the class discussions, every concept is made clear and simple to understand. Most interesting and engaging class I've ever taken. Tests include essay questions that will take 3 or 4 pages to completely answer. If you pay attention you will ace them .
Best online professor I have had yet. Clear format on Blackboard, with straight forward assignments that are easy to do if you read the materials and lectures. No guess work on when things are due and was graded promptly. If I was a philos major I would retake this professor for all core classes. Recommended. Wish all teachers set up BB as good.
He is a great professor! I started trying too late in the semester, and I failed to do most of the reading which put me behind but i caught up. Pop quizzes are held every class but are usually on the lecture before. Reading and studying is very important, and his lectures are very energetic and interesting. The tests are multiple choice and essay.
I took the philos 106 course over summer online (5 weeks). Each week there was 2 chapters assigned for reading, an easy discussion board, and a pretty challenging exam. I studied quite a bit and I found the tests difficult, thankfully he's an easy grader on the free response.
In all my classes I have took online, this has been the worse. His grading is unreasonable! If you want an A.. DO NOT take this class. His tests are hard and confusing.
Online class was very fast paced and you had to be self taught because he didn't provide any lectures or ppt. Exams were extremely difficult and tricky and there was no room for mistakes or extra credit. Not very approachable and took very long to respond to emails. DO not recommend!!!!
Took PHIL 106 in the summer after dropping the same class with a different prof. The textbook was useful but the professor was really good about going over test answers. Don't know why someone would say there were no lectures. There are in the modules in Canvas. Definitely a BIG help. Zero interest before, but loved the prof and the discussion
His exams are very hard. Do the following to do well in the class and on exams. Reading the lectures are essential but the examples within them can be helpful. I strongly advise you understand the definitions and concepts found in each chapter summary you are assigned to read. The online textbook quizzes are really only useful for the final exam.
I took critical reasoning online in the summer. The class was well organized and the teacher was really good about emailing me about questions from the tests. Does give lectures and links. You need to read the material he posts and the textbook. I disagree that the practice quizzes are not helpful except for the final. They really helped me.
4 Tests, 8 class discussions, 1 paper, and a final. Tests make up about 60% of your grade. The Test is timed 1 hour and has around 25 questions with 2 short answer questions. They are really hard questions and you don't have a lot of time to think about it. I did all the work and studied for hours but nothing prepares you for the tests.
The teacher was good about email and answers questions. You need to read the book and lectures. Some of the topics are difficult. Unlike some other classes you're supposed to learn to think critically. If you want an easy A and dont want to learn anything, take something else. The concepts relate to lots of other classes. Would take again.
Except pop quizzes everyday. He gives study guides that do not really help you. No book for class everything that you read is posted on his website. I feel by not having a book for this class made it hard to do good in his class. I would not recommend taking him.
4 Tests, 8 class discussions, 1 paper, and a final. Tests make up about 60% of your grade.
I took the intro class (not online) in the spring. There are pop quizzes that are pretty easy (usually worth 1 or 2 points on what we went over last class). Philosophy readings are hard but the professors lectures are really good. Entertaining and funny, but serious. Would take again.
Take this class with a different professor
Phil 106 critical reasoning class has five tests, a paper and some discussions. The discussions are weekly and pretty interesting. The paper is like a homework assignment, not really an essay. Gives extra credit. The professor gives lectures for different topics, and the class is well organized. He got back to email fast. Would take again.
Take his class. You will learn a lot about Philosophy.
Dr. Andrew Jones-Cathcart is a great professor. I took Philo101 Online over the Spring semester (5 weeks). Very little assignments. The usual weekly reading and a discussion post every week. 2 short papers and 3 tests. I was worried about the tests, did not do the best on them but still received As somehow. I plan on taking him again.
My dude! Prof Cathcart was one of the main reasons I decided to major in philosophy. I ended up taking 3 of his courses and loved every minute. He's truly passionate about philosophy and has great sense of humor. His classes are definitely for those that like essays though--it's phil, what do you expect?
This professor was very helpful with instructions and made sure to respond quickly if there were questions regarding exams. He provided me clear explanations to answers I got incorrect and pointed other mistakes out. However, with written assignments no feedback is left. Leaves you slightly confused. Tests are extremely difficult! Would recommend!
Great professor. He keeps it entertaining but be prepared to know your stuff. Take lots of notes and review them often because you will need them to prepare for the tests. He is tough but fair at grading. He really knows what he is teaching and if you have any questions he can totally explain it where you understand.
So I actually took this course in fall of 2016. It was an 8-week online course. There was quite a good amount of reading from what I recall. If you're lazy like me, then you shouldn't take the online, 8-week course. I'm one of very few procrastinators who piles up the workload closer to the due date & pulls through w/a "B" or "A." Several assign.
I really loved this class. I took it online last year, and it was really interesting even though I had never taken a philosophy class before. The assignments were fun, esp. the lifeboat stuff and discussions. The professor was really helpful and the class was not hard. (Thought I'd probably get a B, but ended up with an A.) Definitely recommend.
This Ethics class was amazing. It was short and abrupt 5 week course. You do not have that many assignments so scoring high on all assignments including the Tests/HW/Essays in a short class is a must if you want a decent grade. Luckily ended with a B.
Professor Cathcart is an amazing match for beginning philosophy students. His explanations of philosophical subjects is broken down in the everyday lectures in a unique manner and he speaks with clarity. No jargon that will only be used to look fashionable and confusing. As I already studied philosophy prior to college classes I still found it fun.
Professor Cathcart is absolutely hilarious and really brings life to philosophy. It's obvious that he really cares about his students doing well in the course, and is very accommodating/ understanding to their needs and schedules. Doesn't assign any homework other than a few short readings. Quite lenient with attendance as well.
If you go to class and listen to the lecture and read prior to class, you should do fine. Do the study guides thoroughly because the study guides are exactly what is on the tests. Tests are multiple choice with some free response (free response make up the most points so make sure you understand information thoroughly!)
Best professor I have taken. I taken many religious base class by far he is one of the easiest class I have taken! His quizzes are so easy, and overall his material is super straight forward. I would take him again!!! Best A ever!!!
Professor Jones-Catchcart is a fantastic philosophy professor. He encourages plenty of question asking and he always answers your questions with detail. He clearly knows what he is talking about. I once asked him a question in an email and he replied with a two page long response that really helped me understand. He really cares about his students.
This class had a clear and amazing layout. Prof. C makes this class has as simple as possible. There was only one discussion post a week as long with one or two lecture videos. Totally recommend!
HE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR!! I honestly did not think that I would find philosophy so interesting. He would always answer my emails within 24 hours, and he would thoroughly explain any questions that I had. I also asked him for feedback on my essays. There is quite a lot of reading, but, if you put in the effort, you will get a good grade.
I took Philosophy 101 with him and it was so easy! Just turn in your work on time. He's a great Professor and cares about his students. I took it during the Covid-19 pandemic and it wasn't bad at all. An hour a week at most. Usually 1 discussion a week. A couple tests but just complete the study guide. Everything from there is on the test.
One of the best professors I've had. The assignments were the perfect amount of challenge and his lectures were fascinating. You will leave the class with a new appreciation for the subject. You will have to pay attention to get an A in this course, but, his teaching makes you want to succeed. Grading was slightly more than fair.
He was an okay professor class wasn't too hard but I thought it was going to be more interesting. You have a discussion a week and a few exams and quizzes. The exams are 4 questions with paragraph responses so you have to understand the material. The quizzes are multiple choice you have 2 attempts and 30 minutes each attempt.
This class was required for me but was super easy. I never studied or got the text book and passed . There was a couple assignments every week but you just have to do all of those and youll pass
Organized and very knowledgeable. Great class!
Dr. Jones-Cathcart is a very generous grader and as long as you show effort in your discussion responses and complete his study guides based on the book you will get an A. He takes the time to comment on Discussion posts and papers and responds to emails promptly. I would definitely take him again if I needed another Philosophy class.
Took short term online class and it was not difficult. There is a good amount of reading and discussions, but the class it's self is very straightforward and goes by quickly. Most of the subjects covered are common sense. I would definitely recommend.
Hes a very lenient grader. Gives a ton of resources to look at and has a clear lesson plan for each week. It was an enjoyable class and I learned a lot about philosophy.
An amazing, knowledgeable professor who enjoys his job! His class was manageable and only required one to two assignments per week. He provides lots of resources and lecture videos that will help you prepare for exams. There's a total of 13 discussions, 3 exams, and 3 writing assignments. As long as you do the work, you'll pass. Take him if you can
Video lectures were nice as many online classes are only reading. The workload was light and was mostly interesting.
I really enjoyed this class and found a new love of philosophy from this teacher. You are given a variety of texts teaching you about the history of the subject and are tested on it. There are a few written assignments but they are not a big deal. Great class!
He made his lectures really interesting, and as long as you take notes, the tests were pretty easy as well.
This class was very thought-provoking! Be mindful that it is an honors course, therefore essay questions should be detailed and well-written. The assignments were manageable and Professor Jones-Cathcart presented very straightforward lectures! Note that there are readings for discussions in order to properly understand concepts.
Took him for a short-term intro class and an ethics class. Both were really interesting. The assignments related to the readings, and he was a fair grader. He gave comments on my papers and discussions. He gives lecture videos for the majority theories, which definitely is a plus. Would definitely take him again.
He gives so many reading assignments!
The tests have about 20 questions and 70% of the points on it come from 2 writing questions. Better make sure you do good on those or you're not getting a good grade.
does not have a fair grading system in the class.
Absolutely phenomenal professor! If you take the tests seriously and study using the study guides given, this will be a great and easy class for you.
Professor Jones-Cathcart is an excellent professor! His teaching style is fun, interesting, creative, and makes philosophy easy to understand. He has a great sense of humor, is an easy grader, is incredibly knowledgeable, and really nice. Since he doesn't give any homework, make sure to study hard for tests and do the readings for pop quizzes.
MY FAV PROFESSOR AT COC! really knows the material well and is extremely engaging with students. i looked forward to his class every week. as long as you show up and pay attention, itll be smooth sailing. 10/10
I absolutely loved him as a professor :) he has such a passion for philosophy and his course is not only engaging and fascinating, but super manageable. I've taken 2 of his classes and work is minimal and manageable. But, exams do have essay questions. Online course is a breeze, in person course had pop quizzes, weekly reading but no text book!
Took this class my first semester as a freshman and Professor Jones-Cathcart really made it a great experience. Lectures were clear and enjoyable. Gave a study guide for every exam, which there were 3 of. As long as you study for the exams this class is an easy A. Just make sure you take notes during lectures.
The professor was very nice and all his lectures were very easy and simple to Understand. He had quizes every morning before class about the info in the previous lesson but he drops almost 1/2 of them at the end of the semester.
This was the best professor I've had whilst attending CoC. His lectures are great and easy to understand. I highly recommending taking this class, as I believe your chances of success will be high.
Professor Jones was amazing and kind! His feedback was very useful, especially during papers, quizzes, or exams. Be prepared to read a lot, however I found the readings very interesting and helpful! Would absolutely take him again in a heartbeat.
I really enjoyed taking his class. His lectures were very interesting to watch and he was clear with everything he was saying. I love philosophy and his class made me love it even more. I really learned a lot in this class and his teaching has impacted my learning tremendously. 10/10 would take again.
He is honestly a great professor and his assignments were straightforward. He is not a difficult instructor whatsoever. Just make sure to answer everything he asks for in the discussions and essay q's in tests. I took the 5 week course and didn't regret it.
He puts a lot of energy into his lectures; he might be the funniest professor on campus. You read some stories online, and as long as you understand it, then you will do good on the light quizzes and tests. As a not so good student, I can say that this was an easy class for sure.
Very magnetic (and unforgettable) lecture style and goes over many related and unrelated topics with an extreme level of knowledge. Lectures had a highly relaxed yet lively and intellectually stimulating environment and I have a feeling he could teach any course unrelated to philosophy.
Took him as a late start course. Very passionate about philosophy and engages with students in both assignment feedback and discussions. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing, but passing with an A should not be an issue at all. His class convinced me to become a philosophy double major, and I genuiunely enjoyed doing the work every week.
Professor Jones-Cathcart is really great even for teaching an online class. He provides a lot of readings, studies, videos, etc. but the best way to learn is to watch his video lectures which are interesting. He is always focused on the course content and gives good feedback to your own work, furthering the discussion. Nice guy and easy grader too.
He is really passionate about what he teaches and gives truly captivating lectures. It was exciting to go to his class and he is very interactive. You have pop quizzes almost every class but they are short and if you pay attention they are easy. Really great professor and very entertaining class that will definitely make you think.
