He is very funny in a dorky way. The practice tests he gives are pretty much consistent with the real test. A nice guy who is very helpful.
He's kind of boring in class, but his test and quizzes are very easy, but you have to listen in class. I never did the homework and I still got an A in the class. Take him if you only care about your letter grade.
I was on border line of a B/A and he gave me a B. RIDICULOUS!
Pretty sad guy. He is kind of boring, but his tests and quizes are very easy. He doesn't even collect homework. Easy class.
He is very good teacher. He is very helpfull if you go to office hours. Very nice and humble guy.
He's super nice and extra helpful! Math can't be any easier with any one else. Go to class, do the review questions to understand his lectures, look over the hw questions, don't have to do them, it's really easy. Definately take this man!
Boring class. DO not take this in the morning or you will be falling asleep! He does not have the gift of clarity when he teaches so you eather knew it before hand or you learn it on you own. Although, the practice tests he gives make it somewhat easy to know what to expect.
It looks like he's always talking to himself because he doesn't turn to look at the class when lecturing. Pretty boring. He doesn't make any efforts to make the class interesting. His grading system is not fair.
wow. hez the most boring teacher ever. I slept everyday in his class in the morning. :) lol. still i got a A.
Not the clearest teacher, but takes effort to make sure you understand. He lets you know what is on the test. Great teacher.
haha. easiest teacher ever!!!I really recommend to take this guy. wow. but you might have to study on your own. He always solves a problem wrong, doesn't know how to explain. He says "Itz just known as this." Good Luck~
Mr. Koines may not have the gift of clarity, but he does give you plenty of opportunities to pass the class with a decent grade. It is pretty much self-learning, but you can pass the class without his help. Just do the hw and read the exercises examples. Pretty boring class, don't take him in the morning.
Leaning toward negative with his teaching ability. He is easy in term of grading, but you will have to spend lots of your own time preparing for the tests because he can't teach! he doesnt konw how to help students, have a hard time answering questions. Introverted. Mumble a lots.
love this teacher. his notes shows step by step how to do the problems, so if youre still confused then you are one hell of a stupid person. jk =)even though he's not good verbally, his notes are more than adequate. go to class everyday. take down notes. look it over 1hr before test and youre on your way to an A. dont need to do hw.
andrew is a cool teacher.. people may say he's boring or monotone or whatevers.. but he's basically just a chill guy.. he teaches the class at a very nice steady pace.. nothing very special about him but nothing really bad either.. then again come on now.. it's calculus
I missed at least 5 weeks of classes meeting in 16 week semester, never bought a book, but still got an A. he has sample tests online which is about 90% similar to his actual tests with different numbers. He's a caring teacher and kinda passive(sometimes kinda boring) but he can be randomly funny sometimes
Koines is a nice guy. Does not collect the homework, and doesn't take attendance. the notes he gives in class are helpful though: he explains step by step... He helps u if u ask, and he is constantly asking if everybody got what he just explained, so if u didnt understand, just ask! gives practice tests... well, hes a cool guy, and an easy A
He is boring and the class is way harder than his Math 170 class. Tests are REALLY hard. I got a 97% in his math 170 class and i got a 81% in his math 180 class. BUT probably one of the easier calculus teachers since the topic is so hard to teach.
He is a very good teacher. He gives you a complete homework schedule that covers all the material in class and on tests. He doesn't collect hw so it is up to you to do it. He gives practice tests which exemplify the tests and he stays after for those who need help, you just have to ask. He isn't the most social teacher, but makes up for it.
SO EASY!!!! no homework, no attendence taken....its a cake walk.
seriously his class is boring. if u want to take math 180 DO NOT pick his class. hes always talking to the board in a monotone voice.
this guy. definetely one of the funnier teachers except i dont even think he realizes it since its in his own geeky way i.e. "are you guys excited about the new math movie(proof)?" great teacher especially since i dont understand concepts. His explainations of "just do this because its just the way it is" at least made me understand
very nice guy though. Follow his step and do your homework well, you will get A!
Best professor ever. If you dont like him you got problems. There are some idiots in our class, but Koines tells them whatsup.
Recommended. Best math teacher in OCC.
This guy is boring. All you do is go over examples. He only has test so if you get C's, your screwed. Learn to teach yourself and you'll do fine.
such a boring class but very easy. doesnt collect hw and the tests are super easy. He is nice but a little awkward and definitly not entertaining.
Omg,he's the most boring & worst teacher I ever had. His test are long and grades it carefully. No partial credits. He said his test will be based on the hw, but it turned out to be so different. You have to really study if u want to pass his class. Test questions are similar to the practice exam, make sure u do those problems and know it by heart.
wow...this is the only class i ever fell asleep in. Easy though. i have never done well in math but i got an A (this is my 3rd time in precalc and i finally got one). you dont turn in HW but i suggest doing it to study. Grade is only on tests.
Boring materials and boring teacher. Just do the homework and get an A in the class. No need to show up to class. Easy to talk to and ask questions. Provide help when you ask.
he's a really easy teacher especially on his tests. do the hw he assigns u because his tests are bascially the hw.
wow worst teacher in the world. should not teach because he doesnt know how to. grading is not fair nor constant. tries to act/be friends with the class. looks like bob sagget but way worst personality. boring class. tests are based off homework but grading is not based on how he teaches yet he still teaches you that way. dont take him.
he has a degree in teaching. . maybe he should have learned to get a personality while he was at it. one of those teachers who knows what he is doing but cant teach. . ironic huh. . .dont take him. waste of your time and money. you will not want to come to class because he is so damn monotone and unsure of himself. needs to grow a spine and speak
Koines is a good teacher! theres not many teachers that show the little steps in between in problem. many teachers go over it and leave their students confused. he's very helpful and and quizes and tests are easy..they're straight out from the hw he assigns (which isnt even collected). RECOMMENDED
fair, straight to the important topics, tests consists quizes, final is composed of the tests.right up there with "the coach"(Mckay) and "McClure"
He is a very good teacher, although he is kind of strict on grading. You MUST do HW or else there is no way to pass this class. He knows his stuff but cant express himself sometimes =p kinda awkward...
A middle of the road professor. Knows his stuff but is boring as hell. Monotone really kills it for me, thankfully I knew most of the material coming into the class.
i'm kind of glad that i got him as my math teacher because he's very thorough and really takes the time to go thru each step. he's a nice guy buch just boring. he's a fair grader.
After just a week in his class, I learned more from him than I did in an entire semester last year. He is so good at making the necessary points. He is very smart, although can be a little slow. BUT ITS A MATH CLASS! I wish he taught every class at occ, because he should be a model for all teachers to copy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, but not mornings hehe.
Andrew is the best! He knows alot about math. and he'll take alot of time on problems so that everyone can understand. The homework is not mandatory the quizes are only 2 questions. He grades fairly. Although he is monotonous. he is funny guy not by what he sais but by the way he is. Great teacher and looking to take him next semester
WOW... This guy is a joke.. Hes smart and he knows his math.. He is just not good at his occupation. TEACHING! If you are expecting to learn something dont take this class.. If you know your stuff he is laid back so it should be easy for you.
He doesn't check hws, but all tests questions are similar to hwk questions. As long as you do your hwks, you'll get an easy A. Also his lecture is super clear and easy to understand. Definitely recommended.
I was abit careful w/ choosing this prof. cuz of many comments on NONCLARITY in class, "R U KIDDIN?" Super clear teaching. He just murmer often during his writing stuff on board, but, Best teaching skills with examples, which will be on ur quiz&tests. Test directly fr HW. Not many HW. Easy Quiz boost ur grade up.(10pt each,12ofem) 4-5 tests.(5pt)
Easy class especially if you've taken precalc in high school. He sometimes explains TOO much (stuff that is only relevant if you plan on taking calculus.) Quizzes once or twice a week-theyre pretty easy, he explains everything very thouroghly, somtimes he wanders way off the topic and just gets you more confused.
He's cute in a nerdy way.
He is so smart. He knows about math. And his class is not hard and easy. If you study hard, you will get an A grade. Just take it!!

Great math professor. Explains very thoroughly. Tests/ quizzes reflect the materials. Has funny stories to tell. Recommended!
best math teacher i've ever had. doesn't confuse you with complicated proofs. Does plenty of examples and the quizzes and tests are right out of the hw. doesn't skip steps when doing examples, very clear. answers all questions and never makes you feel stupid. lectures can be a bit boring, but its math... cant expect everyone to be a comedian.
Very good teacher, very clear in class, wish I attended more. Lets you have a make-up test later in the semester (you can pick which one). Quizzes are the easiest, and if you do your homework, you should pass with no problem. He has his PHD, so don't be fooled with how he acts. Very very smart man.
GREAT TEACHER... LAID BACK BUT VERY HELPFUL. I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND HIM.
Great teacher! Really organized. Doesn't collect hw, but do most of it anyways because both tests and quizzes are based on hw questions. He's goofy, but don't worry, it only makes the class more enjoyable. Definiately take him!
I took him for both 180 and 285. He is awesome, fair, the best Math professor! He doesn't have many jokes but he teaches really well and explains everything very clear, also if you need any help, he is always very welling to help you. I learned a lots from his classes, and switched my major to Math afterwards. Highly recommend to anyone loves math!
Mr. Koines is not a teacher. He refused to add all his petitioners because he's "not that nice". He did reconsider, thinking aloud that if he had 55 students in the class he would make 50% more money.I thought teachers wanted to teach for the students, not the money.Someone has to tell him he's in the wrong profession
pretty easy class as long as long as you study his notes. If you can do all the homework problems then you'll be able to ace the tests.
koines is a total math nerd but a cool teacher. he was slow at the start of my semester and by the end we were cramming chapters but he made is final fair. he only took role on the first day and never again.
he is a cool professor i've ever had in my life. his quiz and test are very very easy. if you are a math person you can get easy A in this class.
hes lazy. just take him. u'll see.
worse prof ever. class almost incomprehensible. does not explain anything, has no interest in the subject he is teaching and talks about other things. his exam may be easy but thats because he doesn't teach anything, which makes it difficult to do well because you have to motivate yourself, and learn everything on your own.
He gives hw out on-line but doesnt collect it. You have to motivate yourself in doing them for your own benefits. Gives somewhat similar practice tests and answers your questions only if you ask. He's a funny guy; tends to talk to himself at times cause nobody answers him. REALLY RANDOM dude.
Poor organization skills. Makes many errors on his quiz and test problems so if you don't catch it, it's your loss. Very moody. Made us buy a book costing over $100 but never used it the whole semester. He lacks confidence in himself and his work. He was responsible for the future of 3 cal classes of students, he should have been prepared!
The materials were not as easy as it seemed in the beginning of semester. But he was very clear and made it fairly easy for us to comprehend. I was thrilled by what he threw at us for final, but overall, very helpful professor if you keep showing your best.
give him a BREAK!! He only made it unfair to people who slacked off throughout semester. I did not see any better alternatives than taking this class, anyway
Worst teacher ever
You guys are all silly. The teacher obviously did not know how to interact with students, but I think it really had to do with his personality that he has to work on himself.
He is absolutely tragic, does not understand the material and self-admittedly sucks at teaching calc 2. One-third of the class failed. He is the most lazy teacher I've ever had and lacks basic social skills. He noticeably favors asians and when review time comes he says it doesn't matter what students write because he's tenured! Don't take him!!
His tests are fairly straight forward, go over his examples that he does in class because they are pretty much whats on the test. Usually does a practice test, which is just like the real test.
Mr.K. is a super nice teacher! He is really fair in his grading which are all from the tests and quizes. He teaches you clearly and doesn't trick you on the tests. He is very shy but likes to blurt out random topics in class which was funny.
Alright this is the lowdown on Koines while he is a weird guy and does talk to himself the class is easy u dont need the book just look at his website and go to class every wed and thurs as those are the days he goes over wats on the test and the day of the test/quiz, his site has prac test which is extremely similar to real test
I missed class back to back occasionally. One of my test I got a 26/100 which made my grade turn from a B to an F. I thought about dropping, but I decided to stay and just take the F for messing up in between. Guess what? I ended up getting a C just putting in some effort to study even though I kept on missing classes and especially on review d
I took Koines for calc 1 and I really liked him, the class is not easy because of the material but he makes it as easy as he can by giving practice tests which a very similar to the actual test. I would definitely take him for calc 2.
I love Andrew beside he likes to talk about Irvine, subway systems, asian food and non-realted topics to the math class.
I love this guy! It's a very easy Calculus I class and the off-topic conversations are icings on a cake of awesomeness. I definitely recommend.
This guy is as close to Ben Stein as you could get!! he has as much personality as a dry piece of steak which can make his lectures boring. BUT the fact that he teaches the math great is why i would reccomend him because like any class you need to put in the effort.tests are almost identical to reviews and he drops lowest test and quiz Take Him!!!
Good teacher, doesn't teach from the book. Don't spend the money to buy it. He had study sessions everyday! If you didn't understand stuff he would help you. Go to class. He is a good teacher, nice, kind of corky, but nice. Take him for calc, you won't regret it.
He's awesome, rlly nice&kinda funny, strange but intrestng. made me like calc. Dont buy txtbook. just print out lecture notes online so u dont hav2take notes inclass&then do homework problems in the notes. practice tests r good. make sure u understand evrything 2 do good on tests. i made lots of stupid mistakes. not quite sure if he raises borderline
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Half the class dropped after 2 weeks because he's horrible....i dropped before the deadline (thank god). when i dropped at the end of the semester only like 2 people have an A and half the class was FAILING or had a D!! terrible teacher. take alves instead. he is an easy A if u do hw, but if u don't it's for sure a B or C
He is a nice guy teaching is okay not bad, very slow going guy but at the end of the semester comes into you, which sucks. the person down there said no use of book, what are you saying? book is highly use the whole exam questions come frm the book. if you want easy A dont take him, but if u wana learn take him. not a class for just anyone, u hve t
nice guy but horrible at calculus 2. if you wanna listen to me then dont take him for cal2 because he doesnt know what he is doing trust me. if you take him you will regret BIG TIME. dosnt gives partial credit AT ALL. i forgot to put negative sign took 5pts off not even fair. but a nice guy, teaching wise sucks!!
looks like will ferrell. i must say quiz and test are easy. no extra credit and curve. hard to hear him if u sit in the back. loves talking to students. he solves problems and talks to students at the same time, so most of time makes mistakes and students pick em out for him. too much distractions. overall its alright. just take him if u are good a
DONT TAKE HIM !!!!!!!!! BECAUSE HE IS SO RUDE and HE DOESNT GIVES PARTIAL CREDIT AT ALL!!!!! VERY VERY VERY AND VERYYYYYYYYYYYY HARD GRADER.
I LOVE HIM!!! HE IS REALLY NICE AND HUMBLE PERSON. YOU WILL LEARN ALOT IN HIS CLASS WHICH I DID. THE CLASS IS HARD BECAUSE ITS A HARD SUBJECT. HE TRIES HIS BEST TO MAKE THE CLASS EASY :) I LOVE HIM :)
He's hilarious, and very social. He's a damn good teacher b/c he doesn't waste time on useless crap--he gets straight to the point. He does a LOT of review and doesn't collect homework. He's better than other professors BY FAR. He's more than fair and I am looking forward to taking his class again. I dunno what to say, he's just so Chill.
Only take this class with Mr. Koines if you are really smart and naturally good at math. He is very strict...but loves LOST.
Even if his tests are easy, the final is NOT A JOKE. Be prepared to walk out of the Final with a lower grade than you had before. This applies to 170 and 180
his class is super super easy. Just do homework by yourself and go to the section review before text or final then you will be fine. Test is just like the review, and the questions are straightforward. He's good at Cal1 and below. I would not recommend him for Cal2 if you are not good at math.
He is a JAPANESE LOVER<33 His class is VERY Easy. Just do homework by yourself and go to the section review before test or final then you will be fine. Test is just like the review, and the questions are straightforward. Just Use his Lecture Notes!!!
Mr. Koines is an awesome professor! The class is boring sometimes (because its CALC!) but when he talks to himself and brings up random things, it's pretty interesting. He does a lot of review, and his quizzes and tests are pretty straightforward. Overall, he's really nice and I recommend taking him!
Tests are straightforward. looks exactly the same as the practice test which is posted on his website. quiz every week. Nice guy with unique sense of humor. prepared me well for calc2.
Hard teacher no partial credit and grades unfairly. If you want to work hard than this is the class for you. No hw collected but the tests are based off the hw. There are better math teachers. Tkaing calc 1 rite now and its a demanding class. Dont take him
Hard Teacher. Calc 1 is super boring and he does only does practice problems. Get ready to teach yourself in this class. Very demanding
I think people either really hate him or like him.. I think he's okay, not too lenient, because it's calculus class. Overall, he's nice but can be very moody at times which frustrates his students. I feel sorry for him for all the criticisms here x_x;;
Weekly quizzes are straight foward from the practice problems. The test contains some tricky problems. No partial credit given, instead marks the whole problem wrong in the test. I have a grade in a borderline of B and C right now. Can't get comfortable right now. I have a CHAPTER TEST and a FINAL to go. I hope to hold a passing grade.
He has quizzes every 2 weeks or so that are very easy but his tests very tricky. He has different versions of the test that really are not the same. You can either get a easy or a hard test. Not all of the tests cover the same material. I personally don't like the way he writes up tests because it is all about the luck of the draw. take sum1 else
For 185, his note are COMPLETELY USELESS, everything is so vague and he does the same EASY problems OVER and OVER, he does not explain what he does, he expects you to know it already. He keeps saying he doesn't teach 185 well, THEN DON'T if you know you can't teach it well..basically just take someone else, this is coming from an A math student.
Doing the practice test prepares you for his test. But also do the homework problems from his lecture notes and the book problems he assigns. He gives problems that may throw you off in the chapter test. But his FINAL EXAM can pull ONE or TWO letter grade down. You'll have to do very well in the FINAL to hold the grade you want. BE CAREFUL!!
Mr. K. will make you look forward to math class. (But you might not like his style if random conversations bother you.) Only makes you memorize a small number of formulas and does tons of review. If you think he is tough there might be something wrong with you. Might be the coolest or dorkiest man in the world.
Koines is a great teacher. He has his own notes and practice test. He gives you hints of what is going to be on the test. Just put the right amount of study hours for this class and you will be good. Very funny teacher when he talks to students. JUST TAKE HIM!! YOU WILL ENJOY HIM!!!
His lectures are VERY clear. He gets straight to the point, and gives A LOT OF time for review. His quizzes are designed to HELP you, and he gives out review tests before all his tests. He does 4 days of review before each test! It doesn't get any better than that guys. He's very talkative and a nice guy. I recommend him 110%.
He's a very funny teacher which is bad for math, wonders into another subject and he like to pick the talkative people and talk to them about random subjects.. But the class is very simple, do the hw, understand how to do it, and take the quiz and tests. Drop lowest QUIZ grades.. but it barely flake the surface, I'm stupid so i got a C in his class
He is probably the easiest calc teacher at OCC. If you don't believe me, go to the other sections and check it out! Quizzes are way easy and the exams are doable. If you cant pass this class, other teachers are probably more helpful & clearer but definitely more difficult. Be prepared to face a hard future after taking him. Overall ok teacher tho
Easily distracted at times - but in the most charming way possible. Homework, homework solutions, his typed notes and his handwritten notes from lecture are all available online. Math might not be the most intuitive subject, but I think I'm leaving Koines' class with a solid understanding of precalc.
He is an alright teacher. I think he is almost too smart and knows math too well to be teaching it. If you go to class and take notes and go to review days you'll do fine. All his homework was online so you don't need the book. he gets off subject very easily. He never takes attendance, but i recommend you go.
Dr. K is awesome. He is funny in the most dry way possible and loves to wander off subject (hearing about his hardass Japanese wife is the best). All the written notes, typed notes, and homework was online, created by him so it's exactly the same as the quizzes/tests. Drops lowest quiz. Really easy as long as you follow along!
People says hes easy and maybe he was but this year hes EXTREMELY hard. He picks hardest questions possible and is not lenient with grading. Most of his problems are ones with "tricks" so even if you understand the concept you have to memorize the obscure problems. Wouldn't take him again unless I had to.
One of the best math teachers i've ever had.
Mr. Koines is pretty awesome. He is super funny but random. I had his summer pre calc class and was pretty easy but this calculus 1 class was hard. You have to do the homework even though he doesnt collect it, and his test and quizes are alot harder. He's gotten alot harder but overall a great math teacher. Calc is and never will be an easy A.
Mr. K is extremely helpful and loves math. His class is not easy. Half of calc 1 with him failed and his calc 2 class is even harder. You have to do all the homework assigned if you want to do well on the tests. Great teacher but not if you are looking for an easy a. Calculus is hard. No teacher is going to give an easy a.
He doesn't take attendance. Look at a textbook if his notes seems too vague. He's not very lenient on grading. Make sure you know your material before quiz or test day. Likes to go off topic at times. Hw is not graded. Notes, hw, and quiz keys are online. He's willing to go over hw problems and quizzes in class. If you're good at math, take him.
very helpful teacher. explained all the proofs and formulas in ways that were easy to understand. some exam problems came from hw problems or in class examples. best math teacher I've ever had. I regret not taking 185 with him
Discusses random things not related to math. It's a shame because he has the potential to be incredible teacher. I was disappointed with him, when he taught he made concepts easy to understand He wasn't teaching so I dropped....
Reads straight from the book. Talks about things that are not related to math. He's really funny though.
he is an awesome prof. he always try to teach easily and in detail. i cannot say he is an easy teacher bcuz only 10 out of 70 get A. you need to study hard to get a in his class
Dr. Koines is a pretty funny guy and has very clear lectures. He does review before the quizzes and tests and makes sure you get the material. He is clear on what kind of problems will be on the test. The material is difficult and I strongly recommend you do all of the homework. He uses some questions from the homework and the rest are similar.
very good with explaining material for upcoming exams
Really nice teacher, funny and dorky. Not very enthusiastic about teaching but you'll learn the material. Fair amount of homework. Highly recommended to show up on review day. Has interesting stories to tell. Attendance isn't mandatory after the first two weeks but if math isn't your strong point, I suggest you show up.
It is a bit disappointing to see how often he goes on tangents. Most of the material he explains is straight forward and questions are similar to homework. He tells you pretty much what to expect on tests although he is getting less and less enthusiastic about teaching. I think teaching is not what he wants to do in life.
285 isn't his forte so don't take him if you aren't a math person. Copies notes from the book word for word. Spends too much time on proofs and too little on homework examples. His tests are fair but moderately challenging. Do the study guides. Pretty nice and likeable guy. But, he needs to develop a better teaching style for this class.
While admittedly a Calculus professor, he did an average job with the Math 30. Expect a lot of work from the book, some class time devoted to homework problems or questions to be done in class, and he will occasionally go off on tangents of work and family, or teaching calculus. Can be boring at times as well.
Calc isn't an easy subject, and only gets harder. Even teachers sometimes don't have a full grasp of some of the harder things. He's really good in the beginning, but starts to digress a lot more when the material gets harder. Babbles in an obnoxious manner, and is overly paranoid about cheating. Otherwise decent math teacher. P.S: Do ur hw
If you have a good basic in math and a person who can study by your own, this class is about it. His lecture is confusing. But his tests are not hard, all the tests are from reviews. He posts notes online so dont worry about attendance.
HAHAHA MR. K IS SO FUNNY! Great teacher and helps you with WHATEVER you have questions on. So crystal CRYSTAL clear on problems. I worked really hard, did all of the homework (optional) and got a B. Tests are sooo fair and so is he. If you are going to take a math class, this is the man you want.
Doesn't like teaching Math 185. As each day progressed in the semester, he spent more time each day complaining about how hard calculus 2 is & less time teaching. I've heard nice things about 180 & 285, so maybe he doesn't 185. Overall, don't take him for 185.
i'm guessing this is his first time teaching calc3 bcus he seemed very disorganized when i had him. his lectures are boring and the only days that seem to count are exam days. his test are REALLY easy though. he doesn't do a good job at teaching, but if u can teach yourself, that's really helpful. my overall grade was a B. only 4 exams were counted
Average teacher. Spends most of the time on proofs, which is basically useless for non-math majors, but for math majors they probably could have read through the proofs themselves in the book. The book is necessary for HW, defs, and thms. Some of the proofs from the book were unnecessarily messy. Tests were extremely easily. Hw is not collected.
Professor shows you proofs that you don't need to do. Gets off topic sometimtes but stories are interesting. Tells you whats on quizzes. Has his own website with practice exams from past years so study that cause they're usually similar. Assigns homework but does not collect it. Its only there for practice. I worked hard and got a C...
Mr.K is awesome. He's random and can go off topic in class. But if you do the homework and REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW your notes before the quiz/test, you should be fine. Ask questions if you don't understand the material. He lets you know what will be in quiz/test and does review. If you put enough effort, you will get the grade you want.
I'll be blunt. The tests/quizzes aren't "hard" but he is a terrible teacher. So unless you already know calculus, you'll be lost on the tests.
Mr. K is AWESOME! He is very clear and very helpful! He also has a great sense of humor and his stories are interesting! I recommend this professor!
Took Dr. Koines in Spring '12. He is a good guy,but not the best teacher; his methods are confusing and don't really answer much. GET THE SOLUTIONS MANUEL! This is the only thing that kept me alive in the class. Almost got an A. Worked on Calc everyday 4 hours a day. Other than that, he's kinda funny, and willing to help if asked privately.
Super easy teacher! Know how to explain it and if you took finite and algebra in high school, his class will be a piece of cake! Very passible and a great choice for someone who doesn't want to major in math!
TOO easy. I suck at math and have only taken up to algebra and somehow got an A even tho I missed class at least once a week and left early alot. Took summer school class too which is supposed to be harder. Glad I took it
I took Professor Koines Fall '13. I love the way he teaches calculus I. All the quizzes are easy and if you take his notes and come to class, then its an easy A.
Horrible grading scale. 80% of the grade is based on quizzes and he mashes up 3 or 4 exercises in one quiz and you only have one question to do and ends up being the most challenging one. Not a very confident teacher and is often confused
Professor Andrew Koines is really a nice professor, but his teaching method tends to be monotone and boring. He only has Free-Response tests, so that means his tests can be challenging at times. However, he will give you partial credit if you show your work. I would take this professor if you know a little bit of the subject or looking for a B/C.
Good professor; gets side tracked easily. Heading scale is weird but not to difficult. Easy of you like math
Professor Andrew Koines is very nice teacher. He's smart and very helpful. His quizzes and tests aren't difficult. As long as you practice before the quiz or test, you're golden. I would recommend if you're looking for math professor who would not collect your homework. Not too much stressful in his class.
I feel he's to easy. Very laid back and doesn't college homework. I got a 100% in his class, but feel like I might struggle in Calculus 2. If you want an easy teacher take him, but if you want to learn more take a more difficult professor.
He is the best math professor in OCC. He usually uses examples to show the lectures. Super easy to understand. I took his math 170, 180, and 185, and got all A. The exam questions are exactly in the homework. So if you do homework, you easily get an A in his class.
Let's just go straight to the point, he can't teach Calc 1. I mean, yes, he does use the textbook a lot since he basically teaches out of the textbook, but both he and the textbook can't explain anything. Both always have 2+ steps missing, too many extra words that overwhelm the reader, uses big words to "sound" smart. I came to learn, not memorize
Not a confident teacher. He is often unsure of whether he is teaching the material correctly. Does not have a strong grasp of the material. Lectures consist of copying down the textbook verbatim, adding little insight compared to if you read it by yourself. Homework is optional, but many test questions are taken straight out of the homework.
He is nice but his teaching style is not what I expected from a math teacher. He is easy though!
I feel he was way to easy on quizzes/tests. He was really laid back though.
I'm a slow learner and really hate math, but this class is easy to get an A. Attendance is not mandatory. Do the practice problems and you are good to go.
Professor Koines is very nice! He tries his best to explain the material. Attendance is not mandatory but you do sign in every day that you show up. Easy A as long as you review the notes he provides for you. I did not even get the book.
He is slow and guides you step by step . Take him ! I took him in the summer( 2014 ) and passed . All his test are on the handouts,so pay attention to that the most .Easy A ! :)
he is really good teacher. as a international student ,i can understood him 100%'
One of the greatest math teachers I ever had! If I could I would definitely take him again. Highly recommended to take him in math courses.
I took his class during winter intersession and had to drop it because it was hard for me to follow the way he taught. Everything I learned while taking his class was self taught. I would read everything from the book because I didn't understand a word he said. This class was really hard for me and my grade went down to a C after getting to quiz 7.
Easy and you can pass with an A if you do ALL the question in every and each sections , exams are from homework question
I am so glad I took this class! Prof. Koines is really helpful, he doesn't mind going over things multiple times, and makes sure you are clear on the subject. Took Trig after a long time away from math, and I needed some clarity on my algebra techniques. He's really smart and game me some great feedback on how to tackle the problems!
In order to get an A you have to get an A on everything, there is no extra credit and very few points to go around. His teaching style is pretty good, he knows when things are extra complicated and will explain them again in a different way. Doesnt use calculators, meaning problems arent too crazy on tests & quizes. I got an A (98%) will take again
Koines likes to quiz you on every two sections and give a midterm and final. Calc 2 is one of the larger hurdles in math, so be prepared to work hard. That being said Koines is a pretty safe bet as his exam problems are pretty consistent with homework exercises. However, his lectures are useless, it's as if you hit play on a Stewart audio book.
This class was pretty difficult. He tests you every single week and that is the only thing that matters. No homework, no projects, no extra credit. His final was a giant chunk of the grade, so if you slacked a little during the semester, there is still hope at the end to make up for it (but you have to work). Homework is assigned but not graded
The thing about Koines is that he is a very lazy professor. For the semester I took him he said that he would have one test per chapter, but as the semester went on he didn't give a single test except for the final. That means that the weekly quizzes were huge aspect on our grade. The final consist mainly of the last chapter and a few integrations.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TAKE HIS CLASS, "DONT". ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN THE PREREQUISITES. DRIED LECTURE AND BAD EXPLANATION, UR GRADES ARE ON TESTS.
This is for student in Fall 2016. He changed the way he was before. I took summer 2016 class, NO practice tests given, NO one worst test off if you heard from your friends' recommendation. His lecture is dried, so the only reason why u took him because he is easy. But he is not easy anymore. Take him IF U ARE ALREADY KNOW CAL becus tests are easy
the worst math professor ever. i have never seen such a lazy prof like him. he should stop teaching. he doesn't give partial credits ( and math is all about partial credit) .
Koines is very unsure of himself. often doubting if that is the best way to solve a problem. his grading online shows a class average and a median which I thought he would curve because his class average was around 60% almost failing, but he didnt, I'm sad for the 70 of us who most likely failed. wouldn't recommend him unless you study on your own!
For my semester with Koines, he got lazy and decided to stop weekly quizzes, opting instead for large tests. I had taken Calculus in high school, so it was relatively easy for me, but a lot of students ended up dropping. Koines spends a lot of time talking off topic. Koines doesn't grade homework, but it is basically required to pass tests.
I have taken Koines for Calc 1 and now Calc 2. He has the same problem for both, which is that he talks off topic a lot, and he is lazy. He will also be very stubborn, and refuse to curve a test if the class average is a F. He will basically blame it on the students not working hard enough. Do all the homework to get a great grade on the tests.
Andrew Koines is hands down the best math professor I ever had. I don't do well when teachers work against me, and Mr. Koines absolutely works WITH you. He loves getting to know his students and being personable with you. This makes him not intimidating and makes it easy to ask for help. An A is more than possible. Take him and ask for help!!
As a person he's very good , but at the same time it can be his downfall. A good portion of the class is spent talking about random topics not related to the lecture and it drags on for too long and class becomes a waste. Exam every 2 weeks. No midterm. Teach your self. HW + time success. No curves. Had to drop because my foundation is trash.
He is lazy professor, who talks off topics in the lecture. And give us lots of homework, but math is all about practice! I took his Calc 1 and Calc 2 both of them didn't have midterm quiz (test) every 2 week and final. If you go to his office hour he will help you and sometimes gives you some hint that will be on the quiz.
We learned what we were really supposed to learn instead of wasting our time and brain power with meaningless simple extra steps, there was little to no room to make ridiculous errors, which is a blessing. The teacher shows a great amount of respect for his students. Taking notes in class was fun, i was happy to come to class. I enjoyed the tests.
My calculus experience with Koines was terrible. He wastes the lecture chatting with students about unrelated topics. Lazy. Homework isnt graded but is mandatory to TEACH YOURSELF the content. Nearly entire class failed. I studied everyday, but his trick questions(not covered in class) were the downfall of us all. Quiz scores determine your grade.
Show up and pay attention. Youll be fine. Hes so funny and is honestly a great guy.
BEWARE, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE!!! Do not make the mistake I made, i read the rating on here and didnt think he was bad. Little did i know that i would have to SELF TEACH the content to myself. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
great guy . if you study its an easy A.
Koines is honestly a great guy. He is very laid back, which in turn can throw off nervous and anxious students but just go with the flow and learn at the pace. Homework is optional, the overall grade is based soley off mini tests. Calculus is a very hard subject, so study, do the homework, and grow as an independent person. That easy
The worst choice I made this year. No extra credit, no chance to make up. Just nothing but 6 exams and final. Just don't take his class.
The worst math professor i have ever taken. Talks about political topics and goes off on huge tangents. Do not take his class because he started the class of on Chapter 9 and then went back to chapter 2. Only thing he grades are tests, so thats your entire grade. Stay away
His way of teaching was giving "optional" homework and going over problems people had questions on in class. He never thoroughly explained his steps and I got lost super quick every time. His voice is very monotone and he has random spin offs where he starts talking about something completely unrelated. I felt doomed to fail.
Although his lectures are not the greatest, he does a decent job of teaching you the subject. He does go off topic sometimes, but it is just to lighten the mood and only lasts for a minute or two. There are a lot of quizzes, but they are really easy and he provides you hw/ in-class review of those types of questions on the quiz.
6 quizterms and one final, homework is optional, the lectures are straight forward , loved Dr. K's class!
He would prefer you attend, but the lectures often go off on pointless tangents. Posts "notes" online but they are really just equations with no work done on them. Posts what he writes down in class as well but often does not incorporate fully what is on his tests. Typos on every worksheet and test. Will often change what is on test on whim.
8 Quizzes and 1 Final decide your grade. Class Average on the Final was a D, very tough to get an A with no Extra Credit or Homework Points
Lectures often go off point. Better off learning from the book on your own. Attendance is "optional" but doesn't post notes or will change test material/dates in class. Class average on tests and final were Cs and Ds. Won't change class difficulty or curves even if the class is failing. If you're not doing well, he'll just say you're not trying
He tells a lot of stories in class to keep students interested, but it gets distracting. Grades are determined based on exams only, and no extra credit or curve no matter how bad the class does. Take only if you're very confident in your math abilities, otherwise find someone els
Dr. Koines is a great professor. He is caring and explains everything crystal clear. Just come and pay attention, you will do great!! Love his class.
Amazing class. Attend the class and do your homework. Come to him if you have any question. He will help you. Do all of these and you will most likely get an A. That simple!
He is one of the best professors I have ever had at OCC. He set you up to succeed.
Horrible professor. Class seems easy at first, but will change the difficulty of it midway. Will test you on concepts from a while ago. Lectures are usually three problems copied out of the book. likes to talk about politics instead of math
he was a great professor, made the class really fun He cares about his students, (let me sign up 2 weeks late), I didnt do too well, but that was because I didn't study as hard as I should've and I couldn't afford the book to do the homework the book is mandatory for homework!! his Lectures are great, easy to follow just pay attention/GoodNotes
He's good.
He is a really calming teacher. People say he gets distracted but he teaches everything in the syllabus a few weeks before the final and sticks to the main idea. His tests are fair and he doesnt make rigorous calculator problems. Definitely recommend him if youre a reading/writing learner because he makes decent notes. Quizzterms every two weeks.
He is a great professor. There are many exams which are very easy. The questions are exactly like the homework. To get an A you just need to do the homework.
Good professor, taken his class during intersection. Often he comes out with topics absolutely not related to math and it could be distractive. Zero homework so practice is up to you. Exams in line with exercises on the book. Go with him!!!
the class was super easy and the prof was very easygoing. a lot of times he would go off topic by telling stories so it makes the time go by fast. the quizzes are really easy. I wouldnt rlly pay attention that much to the lectures sometimes and I still passed the quizzes with an A. probably the easiest math class Ive ever taken
Its the greatest professor Ive ever taken
Im taken his class during intersection, and it was the class that you couldve ask for, I feel great how he handled the class to not so boring.I swear guys you should go to one of his classes. Thanks professor Koines -one of your student during intersection 2019
Cant wait for Math 180 summer class with you prof Koines. Hopefully you will have that class on summer.
He is not a good professor and really chill in class. He is always talking about random stuff in class but not really focus on the lesson. You should study really hard to pass his class.
Professor Koines is awesome. Every day of Intersession I was laughing but still learning. He's very clear about grading and he gives hw and test reviews that prepare you to do well on each test. Very fair, wish I could take more of his classes. He's cool too because he tries to break up the monotony of learning with funny discussion topics.
Too bad
Took his class during intercession, He goes over many examples and reviews before quizzes/tests. Very nice guy, if he goes on a tangent just make him aware of it. Hope to take him for Calc 2
Talk too much nonsense. Did not focus on the problem. This guy goes off topic. Imagine sitting in the class not learning and listening to bull crap. Take another class. Youre better off with another good dedicated instructor.
Gave class a weeks notice for exam 11.1-11.4. Didn't say what would be on the final until one week prior (cumulative). Covered 11.10 in 1.5 hrs one week before final. Crunched 3 exams in last 4 weeks. Inconsistent grading. Misleading exam reviews if given. Unable to assist with challenging examples. Inappropriate comments to female student.
Relied on books and YouTube. Does not stay on topic. Material covered doesnt translate to quizzes, which are really exams. Does not stay on schedule according to the syllabus. A exam avg, nearly failed Final because of a weeks notice of material on it, after taking two exams (3 in a months span). If you NEED to know this stuff, dont take him.
He is getting worse from the last class that I took from him, I do not recommend him to any of my friends. His test is so heavy, you should spend a lot of time to study for it. I miss the time he is nice to us :( He used to be my favorite professor but not anymore.
Talk so many stupid stuff, not helpful and hard test.
Horrible professor. The class seems easy at first but will change the difficulty of it midway. I will test you on concepts from a while ago. Lectures are usually three problems copied out of the book. He likes to talk about politics instead of math...
He is a nice and caring professor. I'm actually surprised that these people left horrible reviews about him. You can't expect to have an easy A without studying. You do need general math knowledge. One person mentioned test problems came straight from the book. It's correct just do all the hws and practice alot, you will pass. Be fair guys!
Regret to take him. Awful experience.
I don't think his exams are that hard, they are not that long and problems are straight from the homework and review sheets. His lectures don't help. Gets distracted too easily, talks about politics or his life or his past students who cheated, and tries to talk to people who sit in the front. Always ended up rushing several lessons before exams.
Let me start with the positive: hes funny and social. However, he is not a very good teacher. He got off topic too much and the class felt like a massive time sink that I paid for; I dont leave my house so that I can chat it up in a 3hr math class. Luckily Im smart, because Im bad at math and had to teach myself the material. Find another.
If you are familiar with Stats, or have a more "straight-up" learning style, this class is for you! Koines is hilarious, rarely ever assigns homework, and really tries to give you all the tools you need. Lots of review done in class. I found the class to be really enjoyable and looked forward to it weekly :)
Hes a chill professor BUT he barely teaches anything most of the time my classmates and I were confused and we had to teach ourselves at home. Overall I barely learned anything and had a hard time passing quizzes
Mr. Koines was a good math instructor because he was approachabe and would take the time to help you understand. He is also a nice guy.
He grades by only quizzes. He gives lots of homework, but he does not collect them. He picks some students to solve the problems on the board. He talks a lot about unrelated topics. If you do not like math, I would not recommend his class.
Professor Koines is a really great instructor! Gives HW a lot but doesn't collect it. grades only on "quizterms" as long as you do the homework you'll pass the tests! Super helpful when it comes to questions too.
I took him over winter intersession(4 weeks). He goes off topic during lessons; he was talking about the Prince of England during the last two weeks. His study guides for STATS was similar to the test and were helpful; the last week of class felt like everything was rushed. We had four exams and a final with no homework needed to be turned in.
The professor barely taught work during class. He literally just talks and talks about random topics besides class. He gives homework but none of it is graded. He doesn't really teach. I passed the class with a B, but that's because I taught myself the entire subject. Cool guy, but I wouldn't recommend if you're not good at math.
If you are an international student, take this professor. Really easy, test is straight forward. All the bad reviews on here are probably Americans who cant do Math in high school. I sat next to a dude who cant even do a simple math problem and he had to always ask me to show him. I switched seats and he dropped out of the class lmao.
I think as long as you listen to this professor class and review his notes carefully, you can get A. All his exams are related to his notes. This is a very good professor, although occasionally some popular topics will be discussed during class. This professor will have assignments, but no submission is required.
Constantly goes off-topic and makes a lot of small talk (How's your day been?, etc..) He has to rush through the examples and doesn't explain any of the steps. At the end of it all, he makes multiple mistakes and the students are left to figure it out by themselves. Gives students less than 2 days to study the concept before they're tested on it.
His grading is ridiculous, one small error in notation in your work and he'll mark you off a point. His lectures are worthless, he will rush through the math then take his time talking about random subjects no one wants to hear about. The only reason I gave him 2 stars is because he doesn't use proctoring. Overall poor use of time and money.
The professor provides an answer key to the homework, but he still expects you to do the homework and turn it in. I find this approach to be very conducive to learning. Instead of being scared of getting the answer wrong, you can first attempt the problem and then check back afterwards to see if you made a mistake. Great approach to teaching!
This is by far the worst math professor I have ever taken. If you want to learn nothing and spend your days looking online for help go ahead. He's unorganized goes off topic countless times during the lecture. He makes a ton of mistakes while working out problems then expects us to do better than him on the exams. Save yourself and don't take him.
He likes to get to know his students and will converse with them and will try to keep the students engaged. He is a good instructor and does a lot of examples and assigns hw but also provides expected answers. The weekly summer exams are about 5 questions and similar to hw/notes. Those who complain about his class are prob incompetent in math.
Professor Andrew is a really good math teacher. He has good handwriting. If you follow his notes you can get a high score in his class. He is a really nice and patient teacher. You can ask the question in-office hours. You can easily get an A in his class.
If you want to pass calculus do not take this professor. He does not explain anything, and he just rambles on about anything, he doesn't teach as well as he should. He expects you to finish your quizzes literally within 20 min of it opening, and he always assumes that the class is cheating. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He is smart and amusing however, a terrible teacher. He does not explain problems well and will often solve problems without explanation. Instead, he is talking about something completely off-topic. A great person but I would not recommend him. He also makes you feel guilty for not having your camera on despite you explaining your situation.
Professor Koines (pronounced "coins") is a teacher who really cares about his students. During the pandemic, he was very open to changing his coursework from Stewart, to more easily digestible YouTube videos based on OpenStax. He does go off topic, but if you're someone who enjoys a good laugh at the start of your day, Koines is your man.
Very kind and nice teacher. Cares about all his students. Tests and quizterms are difficult so study and do your best.
if this is your last math class then i highly recommend him but if it isnt DONT take him! you wont learn anything bc he goes off topic a lot & makes a lot of mistakes. hw is optional but its similar to his exams. majority of your final grade is from the exams & these are pretty difficult (but doable) hes a funny & caring guy just a bad math teacher
Took him during spring '20. his lessons and exams were straightforward. your final grade is made up of only exams (you have one almost every week). he does reviews usually the week of the exam and they're really helpful. he goes off topic a lot so if you came to learn i wouldnt recommend him.
took him last spring. if you came to learn dont take him. final grade consists of ONLY exams and you have one almost every week. he does reviews the week of the exam and they're really helpful (the exams are really similar). basically easy A however he goes off topic A LOT & the class is 2 1/2 hours so it gets boring very fast...
very wholesome professor. he really cares about the students and tries to get to know them. he tends to go off topic but he does explain things well and makes additional videos of his lessons.
Taking Professor Koines class is absolutely one of the best decisions I made this year. He is very helpful and caring. As long as you show up to class and pay attention, you will do well. Koines often go off topic, but that is what makes the class interesting engaging at this time. Do yourself a favor, take his class you won't regret it- I promise!
I took his class for precalc and just finished it. He really is a great professor! Wants all his students to succeed. Does he go off on tangents sometimes? Yeah but thats just his way of making a connection with his students which most professors dont and I really liked that! I would definitely recommend taking him!
Koines is definitely not a people person. He was very critical of everyone but three students, and his lectures were indecipherable. He's also not too great with questions. He told me to drop on the first day for asking a few of them. Do you see my grade? Do you think I should have dropped?!? When I read the book, I still managed to pass.
He talks 2 much. He tries 2 get 2 know students, while we're learning annoying. Not a good professor if u want 2 learn the material. Does notes w/o explaining. A lot of hw 2. He does things last min a lot (deleting an assignment I've spent hours). He's persistent about having a cam on for Zoom. Final's not cumulative. Take him if u like annoying!
I enjoyed taking his class. I liked how he taught his class. I took an intersession class with him. We did one take-home test and the rest of the tests' were given in class over Zoom. We used the book but he gave us everything we would need from it. Luckily, we did not have to buy the book. I would take him again!
I'm taking his class over this intersession despite many low rates on the website. Turn out to absolutely love his class. He is quite talkative but I did enjoy his lecture and his chatting. The textbook is free and homework is not mandatory. He went over all the materials and examples in class. Quizzes and tests are super easy. Absolutely recommend
silly man i love it. really interacts with the class and easy to converse with, except he DOES NOT reply to emails will help and answer questions so make use of that ! would recommend unless you don't like wasting time and multitasking
Personally enjoyed his teaching style. He does not get off track too often and is very understanding. Tests and quizzes are fair - rarely test you on anything you have not practiced yet. Requires commitment and focus, but a good grade is certainly possible with participation in class.
Just a bad prof, goes off topic a lot! Very chill, grading extremely unclear, got the correct answer but got 4pts marked off for no work. Smh shouldve chosen a different prof
I enjoyed Koines for my precalc class. He is talkative and goes on tangents, but he does get through the lecture. He really cares about making sure each student is doing their best. As long as you follow along, take notes, and participate a little you will do fine in the class.
Andrew Koines is a fairly good teacher. His lectures are very good. He does go off topic a lot, but it's just to get to know you better so he can teach you better. I learned calc 1 very good but the test are EXTREMELY hard. He only grades on the 5 tests in the class, which are nothing like other classwork. He puts the hardest problems on the test.
Koines would be a 5/5 if it wasn't for his tangents during lecture, which make it difficult to stay focused on the actual course content. Besides the distractions though, he's a great teacher and even better person. He also uses a free textbook for the cost-aware student. Homework isn't mandatory either. I'd def take him again.
His lectures are hard to follow bc he goes off on tangents ALOT he makes lots of mistakes during lecture too so I recommend and a tablet or u may have to cross things out and erase a lot. he is a great person but learning from him is very difficult. I recommend watching his videos on utube 'koines math' I get super confused in the class
Professor Koines has a bad rap for going on tangents in class but that's only because he wishes to know his students. Calculus 3 is a step up and if you do not do the homework, don't expect to pass. You have to pay attention to his lecture, he's good at teaching formal math but the homework and asking follow-up questions will be on you. He's great!
In all honesty Professor Koines is a genuinely good and smart Math Professor. A lot of people get very set on the tangents he has during class but honestly they are just there to try to liven the mood a little. The best part about Professor Koines is how available and willing he is to help you learn and succeed better. I'd happily take him again.
Was a middle school teacher and it shows, regularly stops or slows class to go on tangents or to try and make jokes. Class had breaks due to length and he would regularly consider classwork as our break or just forego breaks altogether. If you actually want to learn, choose someone who's going to take it seriously.
Koines teaches in a way that makes you very interested in math, he often goes on tangents about his life but those tangents only help you stay intrigued as to what he is talking about. The tests that he gives out are usually not too difficult. He is accessible and if I had the chance I would take him for all my other math classes
Love Professor Koines. One of the most accessible and approachable professors if you need help. Always willing to help you learn, and because of that the course became much more enjoyable.
Me and my homies love Koines. I had him for calc 1, calc 3, and linear algebra and he was very nice. His courses were not too difficult and he graded pretty leniently.
Great professor if you don't care about the content. Lectures are the textbook material verbatim and Koines has absolutely nothing to add but confuse the students. You'll learn more about his personal life in general than you will about math. There are exam/quiz hybrids every other week with obscure selections from the mountain of homework problems
Easy professor, good guy, no homework (studying for this class is the homework) Gives good practice questions to study for tests
Accesible a lot for office hours. Tests are reasonable, homework will 100% prepare you, they're never too hard. He posts notes online which is super helpful and he makes worksheets for students so they dont have to flick through the tb. His explanations are easy to follow and his way of doing math is easy. He makes it worthwhile and educational.
Doesn't reply to emails so good luck with that. Tests aren't hard at all if you do the homework. Sometimes goes on random tangents during lectures but overall the class wasn't bad.
DOES NOT REPLY TO EMAILS!!! If you do the homework you will be just fine. EXTREMELY BI POLAR! Almost as worse as my stepdad. HE IS AT BEST AN AVERAGE PROFESSOR! He does help during office hours but other than that he GOES OFF ON RANDOM TANGENTS IN CLASS THAT DO NOT PERTAIN TO THE LECTURES! HE CAN'T ADD FRACTIONS OR GIVE ME THE PROPER FINAL GRADE!!!
He can be friendly but I have never seen someone who lacks this much tact. Goes on unrelated tangents EVERY lecture, doesn't seem like he wants to teach, my time has never felt this wasted. He starts asking about everyone's life, which is nice ig but that goes on for WAY too long. If you do have to take him, his notes are helpful for those tests.
No homework for the class, and your grade is just "quizterms," He is always going on tangents, sometimes entertaining, but also difficult to learn. Notes were posted on Canvas. At first his tests were reasonable but on his later tests, the questions were nothing like the examples in the notes. Everyone struggled on last tests.
Definitely not a 1 star professor. He goes on tangent's in for 80% of the class, but it's one of the easier math classes I've had. He posts the notes for every lecture online. You can literally just read through his notes, do all the odd problems in the book, and pass the class.
I didn't find his lectures helpful because basically everything he says is in the book. In terms of tests it's from homework so definitely doable. The reason I'm giving him this low rating is because he treats students like middle schoolers, call out names, give humiliation, and does not give the benefit of the doubt. It was not a good experience.
Great professor and really funny. Only math lecture I've never fallen asleep in. He makes math engaging and somehow makes a 2.5 hour lecture seem way shorter than it is. Calc 3 is a difficult subject but I was able to follow the class and get good grades thanks to Koines. Also very encouraging and approachable.
Koines is a decent lecturer. He is friendly, funny, and makes a solid effort to get to know his students. He does large amounts of review in his classes that will significantly prepare you for the tests and final. Doing the homework is not required but beneficial. Koines does NOT curve tests so be ready to work a tad bit harder to earn your grade.
I took Koines for Calculus 1 and to be honest he's a professor that will make you enjoy this class. i highly recommend him for MATH180 !! Good luck:)
Koines was definitely a professor I would want to take again. I don't love math but I didn't mind going to all the lectures because he was laid back but also a good teacher. Grades are all from tests but all the questions are based off similar homework problems. At least one person got a 100% on all the tests and he gives partial credit too.
Professor Koines is interesting, but his lectures for Calc 3 were easy to understand and straightforward. Do the homework problems and review for the exams; you should be able to obtain a good grade. Definitely go to his office hours for clarification as he is more than willing to help his students succeed!
Great professor for Calc 3 (summer), best math professor I've had. Great lectures and answers all questions. Test reviews in class and spent extra 1-2 hours after class too. I was weak in Calculus from hs and I basically relearned/mastered Calc 1/2 from him. Tests are challenging but doable (median often 92-96%+). Very conversational with students
Got a B cause I didnt study. Cool guy but hates his calc 1 students for some reason. Took him again for calc 3 and he's great it's just calc 1 he hates. Calc 1 was just him going off on tangents and because it's new concepts it was hard for a lot of the students to understand well. Helpful office hours tho.
He will go on tangents about anything. Lectures are very dull. I do not recommend taking him. Yes, homework is optional but this means test are what make up most of your grade.
he is a great professor but he assigns LOTS OF in class work and homework. be prepared to take alot of notes
I have never written a bad review on a professor but Koines is definitely a teacher I would not take again. Hes a nice guy but goes off on tangents so much. His class is so dull and all he does is write examples on the board and doesnt explain. As a student who didnt take calc in high school, I was completely lost.
He does go off tangent but he is really caring. I once had my test so bad because I stupidly had 3 days without sleeping to study for another class and he curved that one even if I don't ask him. Homework is not collected but I recommend you to do some it after class immediately to understand and if you don't, just go ask him in office hours.
Prof Koines was overall a decent professor. His tests mostly consist of his HW and reviews he does days before the exam. Doing the HW is very helpful but not mandatory. He can be funny, but he goes off on tangents way too much that by the end of class he's rushing the material. Same goes for the end of the semester, it felt very rushed.
I reckon that he lost his motivation. His lecture is solely based on the textbook, exam is little creative but most of question is from the textbook question with different number. Homework is not mandatory, but will be assigned. You need to do lotta self study to pass or get A.
Cool but boring
I truly don't understand why he has such a high rating maybe he was a better teacher in the past but this semester in spring I am taking him and he is so bad at teaching that you literally have to be on your complete own and learn the material on your own because he doesn't go over the homework at all, and just writes problems on the board. AVOID.
He was okay, just boring this semester
No homework, exams not too crazy, but self study. Only thing he's done right so far is keep the class entertained with small talk. Extremely tough grader and all tests are 50 points. If you do a question right but did some part of it wrong then you will get marked off a lot, even if you understand the concepts. Messes with your grade big time.
If you're looking for an easy A, this is the class for you. All marks are from tests but usually he just reinclude the homework problems or problems from class. However, if you're looking to learn, pick someone else. He usually spend class time small-talking with classmates and usually only goes over the easy problems from the textbook.
He gets sidetracked a lot but his way of explaining concepts was very clear. He always has a review day before each test, and the tests are very reflective of the (optional) homework and review problems. Highly recommend.
Koines made math class something I looked forward to! Everyone knows his tests are easier, but that doesn't mean you won't learn. Although his homework is optional, he assigns the same problems as every other calc teacher, so if you want to learn calculus to the tea, do the homework and ask questions. Also, he lets you drop a test plus a 3% boost.
Best math prof at OCC, if you can, take all your math classes with him. Great lectures, nice tests, keeps you entertained during lectures. This guy is the GOAT. My first math class where i got an A.
He has a tendency to go off about random things, but it makes the class fun and relaxing. In between his lectures, he'd put practice problems from homework up on the board and he also does this during office hours, where you can go up and solve them. Homework is not collected and tests are every 2-3 weeks, but he's a very fair grader.
Professor Koines can be hit-or-miss. Lectures are dull, and he tends to go on tangents. Self-study is key to passing. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for practice problems and quick explanations.
This is tough because I really like this prof, but I'm having to teach myself a lot of the subject matter on my own outside of class. He's funny, and I can tell he's passionate about what he teaches, but we end up going off-topic a LOT in class, which is hard if you have trouble staying focused to begin with.
If you're unable to self-study, find a different professor. I don't recommend sitting towards the front unless you are willing to do a lot of small talk and be brought up to the board to answer problems. He always ends up rushing the lesson towards the end of class due to the tangents he goes on with students. Frankly, it's not worth it.
If you have a learning disability or are not a math wiz I do NOT recomend taking his class. No homework or extra work that keeps you engaged. Textbook only teaching. The course is gradedONLY on 6 tests. No curving, extra credit, or any forgivness. He never responded to any of my emailes instead calles me out in class days later on the message.
I DO NOT recommend taking him. All we do are lectures, even after quizzes. Homework isn't mandatory, but he does post questions from the textbook and sometimes he doesn't post the solutions to them. He talks about random stuff a lot. He's very paranoid about cheating. It just seems like he doesn't care and you're pretty much teaching yourself.
If you can't self-study I don't recommend. He teaches like he's talking to himself and I learned his material only through the "hw" answers. He's an "easy" professor if you can self-study because his tests are based on the hw, but it is SO time-consuming and difficult because he doesn't explain nor teach the harder questions (the tested ones).
Class consisted of copying off problems from textbook onto board, rambling, and overall hard to follow. Homework isn't assigned but tests are worth all your grade. I self studied way too much for this class(u will need a good foundation of trig) and problems on test were sometimes doable and sometimes rlly hard, he takes off a lot of points.
In the first week of school, he mentioned the Marines' minimum requirement six times literally. He talks, which is fine and fun, but he goes off topic way too much. If it happened occasionally, it would be acceptable, but it genuinely occurs every 2 to 5 seconds. You will need to teach yourself most of 170.
he goes on tangents very often, as a lot of people have pointed out. he also can be a little mean or unsympathetic at times, but he's pretty funny and i honestly enjoyed listening to his rambling. hw wasn't assigned but is very good practice. his lecture is from the textbook. tests are your only grade but you get the previous year's to practice.
One of my all time favorite professors! Yes he gets off topic but he gets back to the material and his explanations make sense. He can't make it any easier than he has. 100% want to take his class for calc180 and 185
He talks random things a lot in class. His finals are in chap16. Hw with no due date, but you must do them to understand them. I would not recommend taking him if you want to understand the lecture, but I'd recommend whoever wants an easy grade. He's a lenient grade. He knows his knowledge overall. The class is hard, but he taught the best he can.
His class is not hard but he goes off topic alot so it is sort of a waste of time. He is alright and will help you if you talk to him.
Tip 1: Do your HW and you'll pass every exam at least B or higher, the HW is harder than the test Tip 2: Every Test has at least a graphing problem, Professor Koines loves graphing and storytelling Tip 3: Study graphing for e^x, Ln, and Tangent and how they behave, Professor Koines loves adding these problems to the Test
Probably the best math professor I've had at OCC. His exam questions are very fair and are the same difficulty level as the (ungraded) homework problems, so do the homework and you'll do good. He does yap a lot but it's fine because he's really chill honestly lol
I was struggling mentally through a good portion of the semester and worked incredibly hard near the end to bring my grade to passing. I asked him after we concluded the final if I had passed the class and he said that I did. Turns out he actually failed me instead.
One of most difficult professors to deal with. Very complacent, only grades based on tests, and has no structure to the class. This class would be easy if you already know calc, but nearly impossible if you are learning calc. There is no way to study since there is little alignment between his test, review, homework and lecture. Would not recommend
There are no calculators allowed, no quizzes, no homework, and no extra credit in the class. You only get a few worksheets at the very beginning of the semester, and that's it. The tests are much harder than you would expect. If you're aiming for an A, you should seriously consider taking the course with a different professor.
Very chill professor. - Even though attendance does matter, he doesn't start taking attendance until near the end of class. I was always around 30 minutes late to lecture, he doesn't seem to care or make a big deal about it. - HW is optional. - He goes of topic very often but does explain the materials very well, especially when you ask him.
Not strict but you won't learn much. Goes off topic and asks students random questions WHILE going through lecture. Heavily weighted on tests, little homework worth near nothing, and practices and tests did not align. Solves problems and does not explain, tells you to use ChatGPT, and may assume you're cheating on tests. Take if you have calc bg.
