This is the FUNNIEST teacher ever. His class wasn't very difficult, but it wasn't easy. Practice midterm and review sessions helped a lot.
Kummel is hilarious - there's never a dull moment in class! He makes his expectations very clear, is really enthusiastic about his class, and has some great experiments to show off. He totally changed my attitude on chemistry :)
Kummel is great teacher and a great guy. He is very entertaining, makes the class interesting, but he is somewhat demanding (with average effort a's are obtainable). He offers plenty of review, and is the most helpful and clear teacher i've had.
He's really funny. Don't take him if you don't like jokes about Commies and dysfunctional families. His review sessions are very helpful and there are lots of demos so you'll never be bored. He's also really good at remembering people's names.
Kummel is awesome. He is the funniest prof you could ever have (Everything is a Commie trick). His exams are pretty hard, but he reviews the material multiple times, gives you practice midterms that are very similar to his exams. Best prof I've had yet.
He makes the class pretty fun, but some of his analogy's he uses to teach are more confusing than helpful. Practice test are helpful, but actual test were pretty hard.
He's a really great prof. He makes lectures go by quickly with his hilarous comments and jokes. Word to the wise, go to all his practice midterm sessions and complete the packet of old midterms he gives you, they help a lot on the midterm.
Dr.****mel is a great guy, he's funny and his lectures are pretty effective. That said, his tests are pretty difficult with or without the practice exams and really lead his students to the slaughterhouse!
Demos and hilarious lectures..great professor
Professor****mel is the best professor I've had this year. His teaching is very effective and clear. He gives out notes for every chapter and gives practice exams (do all!!!) Put alot of work and effort into this class, midterms and final are very hard!
Great teacher, horrible tests. If you want that A, you'll have to really earn it.
He is very helpful in office hours and has a true passion for getting to knwo his students... if you get to know him. His tests are practically the same as the practice test he gives out and his review session are awesome!!!!
He really is an amazing professor. His tests are hard, though practice tests help a lot, but in the end his grading will be fair. His lectures are captivating and make the class almost fun. Also he really cares about students.
provides lecture notes for every section, FREE of charge, uses simple analogies to explain concepts, has a great sense of humor, and holds practice midterms and finals where he will go over EVERY problem on a previous midterm.
Going to****mel's lectures was like going to a comedy club, the guy has a great sense of humor. He makes the material easy to grasp, and his review sessions are extremely helpful.
Makes learning chem very fun. He does talk at a very fast pace but his handouts make up for it.
Gotta love Kummel. Dr. K is one of the coolest guys around. Him and his Kim Jung Eel jokes...
difficult exams (harder than hw and trickier), but practice sessions VERY helpful. inflammatory sense of humor, but good natured. hw mandatory and lectures helpful, so don't take kummel if you're into self study.
Kummel's class is fun to go to and makes chemistry a hecka fun subject, give-away note slides are pretty helpful so you don't have to take real notes! Tests are hard!!! but if you tkae the practice ones and do the homework you'll do fine, study mucho
Very Funny. Hard Test. Go to lecture. He gives out all his overheads. Go to practice midterms and stay on top of homework. Highly recommended.
The lectures aren't directly taken from the book. He chooses what he think are important and only lectures on those notes. The notes are in very small font which makes it are to read. Don't let the practice midterms fool you, they aren't like anything compared to the real ones. They're harder.
Homework is taken from a different professor, and therefore not directly relevant to the tests.
he makes bitter comments but they sound so funny when he says it. he made the class really fun. he really does care for his students, and spends unbelievable amount of his time out of class to help. you can't not like him
GO TO THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS!!! I go into them knowing nothing, and come out knowing everything. Dr. K really takes a lot of time out to help his students, and it really shows. Once again, be SURE to GO TO THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS!!!!!
dr. kummel is definitely a great professor. mandatory homework makes it easier to grasp the problems, review sessions are SUPER SUPER helpful, he is very entertaining, and he's an all-around great professor. highly highly HIGHLY recommended.
Dr K is definitely one of the best professors at UCSD. His tests are hard but feasible if you do the homework and attend review sessions. He gives a lot to his students but he also expects a lot back. He is a very dedicated instructor snd I highly recommend him, especially since he's so funny.
Dr. K is soo entertaining! Definitely made going class fun even though it was early. Make sure to go to the practice midterms because they definitely help. The midterms are pretty hard but hes pretty reasonable with the curve.
Dr. Kummel explains things well, and reviews the previous lectures' material every class. However, his *3* midterms are very challenging. To ease the pain, he holds two practice tests before each midterm, and these prove incredibly helpful.
Dr. Kummel is FANTASTIC!!! He's funny and spent a LOT of time outside class helping me. Be sure to go to the practice midterms- they're very helpful and often directly on the tests. Tests are hard so study a LOT, go to office hours, and ask questions. I highly recommend Kummel.
Kummel is a great explainer and a FUNNY professor. He makes the lecture so interesting by his jokes. As long as you go to the practice sessions and UNDERSTAND them you'll do fine. Review his notes too. You'll get at least a C+.
Kummel sucks. He didn't teach--all he did was read off his overhead notes. Sure he won the hearts of his students by creating notes for us, holding practice tests and being "funny". But he's NOT a good teacher. And what's with being a proud ****--seriously, keep it outside of class, moron.
very hard subject matter and kummel doesn't explain it very well. he makes jokes which are pretty funny sometimes, but they don't help you pass the class. hard to stay awake in the mornings. i'd advise you find an easier teacher
The best chem professor ever! He hands out copies of his notes, so you can concentrate on learning. He cares about his students very much and holds two practice midterms for every midterm which are extremely helpful. A very funny guy who will make you get up in the morning to just go to class. Highly recommended.
kummel is the best. dont listen that 1 person who said he sucks. he/she must had fail the class or something. he is funny and get great lecturer. well-prepared for chem 6bl & chem 6c. REVIEW SESSIONS ARE A MUST! NO MATTER HOW LATE THEY ARE
awesome, even though he likes the satanic questions like 666. but, he gives you soo many practice problmems, if you do all of them, you're almost guarenteed an A. and go to the review sessions, reallie helpful. highly recommended
So funny! Hands out his overheads. I went to class for pure enjoyment. His tests are hard, but he gives two practise exams before every test. Definitely go to those becasue explains every single one thoroughly and the questions are similar to those on the real test. He is very nice, even if you ask a stupid question during lecture.
Cool teacher, very funny. Good at explaining things. Very helpful in office hours. Really cares about his students.
Allright, he was HILARIOUS, but i didn't think he really knew what he was talking about. If he did, he didn't do a good job of showing it. His antics were hilarious and his class was always fun, but I just don't think he did a good job of teaching the material. He skimmed over things and went way too fast on some stuff. The plus side is that he gives 2 practice exams before test that are a lot like his actual exams. I wouldn't recommend his class if you like cats :)
He was obscene, vulgar, and liked to drink. But I never fell asleep during his lectures. The material is difficult and his tests are tricky, but he gives a lot of practice exams and was very helpful and incredibly nice during office hours. He explained the material decently.
hard teacher.. talks too much about his hatred for cats. practice midterms give no insight on what his actual midterm is like, and his midterms and final are pretty hard
Oh my god, Dr. Kummel is amazing. He's the only professor who could make 6B interesting. If you're easily offended, he might distract you, but seriously - all of his ridiculous jokes and analogies really helped me. THE MIDTERMS ARE ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THE PRACTICE EXAMS. Very possible to do well in the class if you just learn how to study right.
Funny, but his exams are all conceptual. He hates math problems since he always messes them up. So, if you don't grasp the concepts, it may be hard to get a good grade. He holds practice exams/reviews right before the exams, but they're not THAT helpful since you don't have much time to study after. He does keep you awake in class though.
are you kidding me? this guy practically teaches a math class. if you want conceptual, take dr. hale, if you have better mathematical intuition, kummel is definately the way to go. you can reason your way through almost anything using formulas
Kummel sucks. Seems more interested in making jokes than anything else which makes his analogies really stupid and hard to apply a lot of the time. The homework problems are rediculous(1/2 hour conversions for each problem before the actual application of concepts)and exam reviews are helpful, but practice questions arent similar to his actual exams
great teacher, provides overheads for his lectures, provides two review sessions [practice tests] for each midterm [there are 3], plus two practice finals. a difficult class still, but he makes it interesting with his great jokes and nonstop sarcasm. highly recommended for chem :)
Kummel was great! Definitely go to the practice tests, they are VERY helpful for the tests! Kummel's tests are hard, but if you go to the practice exams, you'll know how to do the majority, if not all, of the problems. I'm definitely not one of those people who loves chem, but Kummel just makes it ok with jokes and demos, I eneded up with an A.:)
Funny guy. Practice midterms aren't very helpful. Assigned homework isn't very helpful. But he is a good, entertaining lecturer.
he was a very funny teacher and did many entertaining demos! Very helpful to go to the practice midterms because his midterms are very similar to his practice exams!! very godd teacher but he hates cats!
I would highly recommend going to all of the practice exams. His exams can be a bit tricky, but he admits that before hand. Professor K does demos EVERY class, and usually pretty cool ones! He doesn't use powerpoints or post anything online but provides handouts of the lecture overheads.
Great overall teacher. Gives you copies of his notes so you can listen instead of write. Funny jokes and awesome demos to keep you interested. Practice midterms are the same as actual midterms but with different numbers (GO TO THEM!). Lots of reading from the boring book, but he's a good teacher, highly recommended.
Awesome professor!! Very fun and clear lecture, helps a lot. Go to lectures definitely! Gives out practice midterms and finals which are extremely helpful. Definitely take his class :)
Extraordinarily funny professor. As everybody else says, go to every single practice midterm session, and do the extra practice midterms that he hands out. If you do all that, you should be fine, although it's still a difficult class. Super-highly recommended.
Hilarious professor; he'd make a great drinking buddy. Very enthusiastic about chemistry and an old fashioned guy who's not into the computer stuff. His practice tests help lots and you'll get a pretty good grade if you do all the homework and go to the review sessions. and all his quizzes are multiple choice.
He's not a bad professor. His tests are pretty easy if you study and his jokes in class are kinda funny.
going to lectures didnt help me. gives you notes but they are messy. tests he gives are not like the assigned problems. practice midterms are the most helpful. is very helpful during office hours. i still dont recommend him overall because you don't really learn the material, you only learn how to do the type of problems that he makes up.
He makes chemistry fun w/ useless demos and keeps class interesting by talking about drinking, dying cats, communism, and his love for kim jung il and chancellor fox and how prof. sawrey is like oprah. Either hate him or love him. He's very helpful in his review and practice tests are even more helpful. Making cheat sheets were very helpful.
He's not as funny as everyone says he is, it gets a bit old after a while. He's also hard, but his tests are almost always in the same format...go to practice midterms they help a lot
GO TO PRACTICE EXAMS! He's hilarious. Take this class, but be prepared to work.
He expects a lot from his students so you should be ready to study. On the upside, he is a pretty humorous guy, and his practice tests are very useful. He also doesn't find obscure things to test you on, everything that shows up on tests are pulled almost completely from the book and practice tests.
Sooo funny, which makes the class all that more interesting. He really cares and knows how to teach! His midterms and final are hard, but he has a lot of practice tests, which helps a lot! I learned more from this guy than any science teacher in high school or Pomeroy in 6A.
Funniest professor I've ever had, and a pretty good teacher. Midterms weren't too bad so long as you did the practice tests, but final kicked my butt. If you're a genius and get really good grades on midterms you don't have to take the final either. I recommend himm, but you have to study and DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS.
He is a great professor; very funny and he actually makes learning fun. His real-life analogies make chem easier to learn. His exams are hard (go to the review sessions) but honestly, they don't make you think about how to solve a problem; they're pretty much lecture based so go to class! He's very funny and his in class demos are fun.
He's one of the funniest professors ever. go to his review sessions. midterms are pretty difficult. sometimes his analogies dont make sense, but if you dont get it he tries really hard to help you to understand
Professor Kummel keeps class entertaining and interesting. He does a lot of experiments and blows stuff up. I recommend him; his tests were pretty tricky but fairly representative of the practice tests. He's also really helpful and very willing to explain anything. 6B is pretty theoretical and he's good at making it understandable. Take him!
I highly recommend him. The class was fairly easy. I do recommend taking all the practice test because about 1/3 or so are on the actual exam.
Good professor. Very funny and knows his material well.He gives lots of practice exams and midterms that are very similar to the real exams.Lectures and clear and straightforward and does a lot of concepts and problems in class. Office Hours the best to get help.Helps appreciate chemistry more.
Kummel is awesome!!!!! he changed my life~ he's SUPER funny and gives NUMEROUS practice tests before the real thing (which he goes over every single one of them himself) they're near identical to the real thing! Dr. K is the coolest prof at SD~ lectures will keep you awake too~
Good if you're just looking for a funny prof, but his jokes do get old after a little while. Pretty good prof for chem, gives fun demos in class and tries to get you to care. Homework also boosts your grade
TAKE THIS ADVICE: He is probably the easiest chem profs at UCSD. If you want to learn about chemistry DO NOT take his class, he goes too fast during lectures and he will leave you clueless by the end of class. Basically, you're on your own, but the upside is that his tests are relatively easier. If you're a serious student, take Johnson.
Umm... this class isn't easy at all. Why say it's easy when there is no curve... 85% is an A and that's consistently getting 17/20 on his midterms that are all tricky questions. Even though he gives us practice midterms... doesn't defeat the fact that they try to trick you every time. Recommended for Chem majors/engineers only.
Funny and knows what he's talking about but talks SO fast that you get nothing out of lecture. He gives helpful notes and practice exams which are exactly like the exams, BUT you have to learn it yourself. You get a cheat sheet for test so i didnt learn anything in the class, well only how to take his tests. grade is 3 mids and final plus some hw.
Pretty good professor, got the jokes (although they do get old), and has some interesting demos during class. The only downside is his tests, they're kind of tricky. He does provide two review sessions for each midterm though so it's a little more familiar but still a tad bit difficult. Overall, not bad for a chem prof.
Good at teaching, tough tests. Tests consist mostly of conceptual stuff and less math. Know the nitty gritty "little" things/details or else you're screwed. No curve; his slightly lowered grading scale does not = curve. (Tip: Don't take Warren writing and this class in the same quarter; there's always a midterm during the week when a paper is due.)
Kummel is a funny teacher that does cool demos during class but will teach you nothing. He gives pratice exams before the real exam and some questions are similar but they're still tricky. If you really want to learn chemistry, DONT TAKE HIM
Pretty good professor. Funny, but his humor can get a little old. His study guides are really helpful, and with a lot of work you can get an A.
Very funny and good at teaching. He is also really nice if you talk to him in person.
Funny teacher. You need to know the materials to understand during lecture. I had to listen to Johnson's podcast lectures while taking him. His midterms are hard and not similar at all with the practice midterms. I didn't learn anything from his class. Highly NOT recommanded.
He is a pretty funny guy. His jokes are usually pretty funny but they get repetitive. He is also very friendly in person. Not the greatest professor but he is ok. His test are fairly difficult though. You will want to study quite a bit for them.
I rekindle my love for Chemistry after taking him for Chem 6B. He knows his materials and yes, his midterms are tricky & hard but that's how every midterms are to begin with. He makes waking up early for Chemistry on Tuesday & Thursday bearable. Take him, you will definitely learn & have a better appreciation for Chemistry.
Kummel may be a funny professor, but don't underestimate him... but his class is one of the most difficult I've ever had - and this is coming from an A student. You're practically studying for how to take his test instead of actual Chemistry. I would not recommend Kummel unless truly love Chemistry. Take it with a different professor.
Kummel is very funny, but his tests are not that easy. If u take him, u should go to every practice midterm sessions, which is very helpful. Also, he gives practice midterms as hw too, so this is very helpful too. 1st test might b hard cuz he uses tricky questions, but if u get used to it, u'll be fine
Entertaining professor. You don't pick up much from the lecture, the book doesn't correspond to what he's teaching/on the midterm. 6B is probably the hardest in the freshman Chem series and Kummel is probably the most difficult professor for 6B. I don't recommend him unless you're really passionate at Chemistry.
Difficult professor. Lectures not mandatory but suggested. Study the book and make sure you are CLEAR ON CONCEPTS. Most questions are conceptual. Does demos at every lecture which make them entertaining. Funny guy in general, not so fun on tests
A slight curve is applied at the end, there is usually an extra credit question on the midterms, and Chem 6B is really hard. Know your concepts really well, know how to apply your equations really well, and DO THE HOMEWORK! He gives you old midterms to review, and your only chance of getting an A is to review all of them.
Kummel's tests are killer. He's a funny guy and his lectures are pretty interesting, but his test questions are really obscure. He also goes through the lecture really quickly.
He's a funny professor, but his tests are insane. His practice exams are somewhat helpful, but the exams are usually way harder for some reason. He doesn't really go in depth in terms of how to do the problems, and his tests are highly based off concepts, so if you take him, get ready to memorize alot
Kummel is a really great professor. I hated chemistry prior to his class, but I enjoyed his class because he had fun with the subject. He is a really funny guy, and his class is interesting. He does a demo every class which I thought was a great break in between taking notes. His tests are really hard, but he gives out practice exams prior.
Kummel is the best Chem teacher at UCSD. All the stuff that was hard to understand made no sense until he spoke about it during lecture. Plus, his sense of humor made the class funner to attend. His midterms and finals were hard but if you attend the practice midterms and study, then they are doable. I recommend this professor to everyone.
Kummel is a very interesting guy, and pretty skilled at giving lectures. He can keep your attention, which is a good thing. His tests are HARD. Even if you attend every review session, it's still no walk in the park, studying is still required. I would avoid him unless you're particularly interested in Chem, bc theres other teachers for an easier A
TAKE THIS TEACHER. He's difficult and he moves at a fast pace, but you will not find a better teacher who takes the time to answer questions and give practice midterms that are exactly like the test. Plus he made lectures actually enjoyable.
Kummel's midterms are almost excatly like his practice tests. Go to his review sessions, do ALL the practice tests, make good use of your cheat sheet and you'll do fine. If you are willing to put in time, his class will be VERY easy. FYI-- He loves using analogies
He makes chemistry very interesting and is so funny! I love his political incorrectness and honesty. He makes things very clear by using analogies often. A really nice dude. His tests are pretty much identical to the practice exams he gives.
3 midterms sounds scary, but he holds 2 review sessions before each midterm, very helpful. . He prints hand out too. Very organized and entertaining classes. Really learnt a lot from his class.
He's a really great teacher!! A very nice person who is humorous, helpful and full of sense of responsibility. You can learn a bunch of things from his class. Tests are very tough but you must choose him if you love challenges.
Good at lecturing but since his class was a 8am I barely went. He goes faster than the other chem professors (like 1 chapter ahead usually) and I thought his midterms were really hard. They are similar to his practice midterms but they don't really reflect the readings in the book.
The last comment was spot on. He goes out of his way to give a couple of practice tests before each midterm, but they're still really difficult because you have to use methods that he went through in class, not really following the book. If you don't go to lecture, good luck, but it's a doable A if you put the time into it.
Professor Kummel does everything in his way to help you get through the class. countess practice exams are given. He is also very witty and very kind. I would not miss the chance to take him. Only chem class i enjoyed in UCSD
He does a lot to help his students learn. He is really nice and quite funny so it helps the students stay awake at 8 AM. I really like how he holds practice exams to help us prepare for the midterms. His exams reflect what his practice exams tests are on.
Honestly, though a lot of people really like Kummel, I couldn't stand him. His jokes about the mafia and about "666" (I don't know why that's funny) drove me insane. His slides are wrong often times and he brings up irrelevant things like music videos and yoga pictures. Some people think he's funny, but I detested him as a professor.
Very nice guy, quite humorous. Sometimes his analogies were hard to understand but entertaining nevertheless. Appreciate how he holds practice midterms. Gives us a good idea of what the midterms will be like.
This guy really got on my nerves sometimes. His jokes in class were often rude and inappropriate. The fact that he wouldn't post grades on TED because he was just too lazy to do so was really inconsiderate. One thing I did like about the class was the practice exams which were admittedly helpful. Aside from that, thank goodness this class is over.
Kummel is an awesome professor. His tests are really hard, if you don't go to the practice exams good luck. He makes class enjoyable, and his grading scale is generous. I had an 82% that translated to an A-. Whatever you do don't miss the practice exams, those are the only thing that will help you through this tough class.
Hilarious, holds attention well, very fun, does demos every lecture, explain very well, takes questions during lecture and will take the time to explain, and really cares about his students. However: difficult, lectures quickly, messes up his math, uses clicker and is at 8am. However, it was the only class I've every wanted to attend. TAKE
He's funny, but his teaching style is not my cup of tea. He uses analogies that I couldn't really get, and his exams are extremely difficult. He offers many practice midterms and review sessions, but in the end, it felt like I knew more about taking his tests than knowing the material. Heavily conceptual class.
I love Dr.Kummel. I miss his lectures. He explains well and makes it crystal clear and hands out slide prints which is super helpful. Our class is at 8AM, but lecture is not boring at all with all the music videos that explains chemical principals and experiments that sound very intriguing with some of his comments. Kummel is a UCSD must-have.
The lectures were helpful and he taught well. The final exam was tough and it could possibly bring down the all semester maintained grade. Study guides given were helpful.
I hated Kummel. He spends most of lecture being silly. I didn't learn a thing in lecture, plus I had a horrible TA. I barely passed this class. I don't understand why everyone likes him so much. Things I learned from Kummel: he likes salty food and alcohol, he hates cats. Things I did not learn from Kummel: Chemistry
Dr. Kummel really cares for his students. He gives out surveys for every week and tries to improve his teaching technique to help you. He answers every of your very carefully.
Hilarious guy, incorporates lots of jokes into lecture. Has a clear understanding of what he's teaching but sometimes the analogies he uses do more harm than good. Overall a professor worth taking. SHOW UP TO PRACTICE EXAMS they will save your grade. The experience you get from this class will open your eyes maybe more so than the content you learn
Professor Kummel was one of the funniest, wittiest, and most enthusiastic chemistry teachers I have ever taken. I thoroughly enjoyed his mafia similes and spunky music videos that he related to the lesson of the day. Definitely was worth taking an 8AM class with him. Also I have never seen a professor as buff as him.
Professor Kummel is the best Chem teacher I have ever had. I went from barely passing chemistry with Hoeger to actually liking the class and looking forward to doing well on the midterms. Kummel is funny, caring and actually gives fair midterms with tonsssss of help with practice midterms. I wish he was teaching 6C!!
Professor Kummel is the best CHEM professor I have ever met. He is witty. His lecture is extremely clear and structural. I can't find a second professor who is willing to print out the lecture slides and hold a lot of practice exam sessions. If you are taking CHEM 6B in the winter quarter, I think you should take him!
really funny and he really tries to keep lectures interesting which was so great specially because it was an 8am class. He speaks loud and clear and does demos everyday. He has review sessions before every test and several practice tests. Since it is chem you do have to do some reading of your own but he provides you everything you need to pass.
I loved Dr. Kummel! He's a really great professor and he's very approachable (unlike other professors). His tests are REALLY hard, but he does a FANTASTIC job of covering the material. Tips to Pass with an A: FORM A STUDY GROUP--you need to makefind one, period. Go To Practice Midterms Read test questions as carefully as you can. Seriously.
Dr. Kummel is an amazing lecturer who keeps the class engaged. He is good at teaching the basic concepts of each chapter; that being said, you will need to do much more independent studying in order to do well on his tests. If you want a good grade in this class, you really need to work for it. That being said he's very entertaining during lecture.
Professor Kummel is extremely knowledgable and intelligent, but sometimes he assumes we are too and doesn't explain certain concepts in enough detail. Nonetheless, he often tries to explain concepts through real-world analogies that can sometimes be helpful. Tests are very tough, but he holds two review sessions before every test.
Amazing professor overall! Holds 2 reviews before each midterm and tons of take home practice exams. Encourages students to ask questions during reviews and explains everything clearly. Go to the review sessions and do the practice exams and you will pass!
He's an awesome professor and really brings Chemistry down to your level. Unfortunately, I don't feel like I've learned the material, just how to take his tests. Practice midterms are SUPER helpful, attend as many as you can. I would take him but you won't retain much :
The best professor I've met. His class is really amazing and clear and it is why students fill up the lecture hall at 8:00 am. An awesome professor who plays video in class and allow students to skip the final if they do well in the midterms. His exams are not easy, but he gave 4 sets of practice exams and 2 review sections before EACH MIDTERM!
Dr. Kummel kept me awake during 8 am lectures (that were 1.5 hours long) by showing funny videos, doing demos, and being sarcastic. He gives out 2 practice tests before each test (3 midterms, 1 final), and these are pretty similar to the actual tests. If you really put your time into this class, you'll do fine.
Dr. Kummel was a funny guy and good lecturer. However, I personally had to work hard to do well on tests. 3 midterms + 1 final, 100 points apiece. Drops your lowest midterm and makes final 200 points if it helps your grade. GO TO PRACTICE EXAMS, these help immensely to familiarize you with the material that's going to be on the midterms and final.
One of the professors at UCSD that I think actually cares, makes lectures light and funny and gets that 1 12hours at 8 am isnt ideal but he works to grab your attention puts in a lot of effort in putting practice exams that prepare you for the test, his grading is also quite generous at the end of the quarter. All in all fave prof so far at UCSD
Not your regular 8 am's. He's a funny guy that keeps the class interested. Both the midterms were super hard, but he does hold practice exams a couple days before (usually sunday night). Love the experiments he does in every lecture, keeps you awake!!
great teacher
Incredible teacher who manages to to keep even 8am lectures light and entertaining. His teaching is crystal clear and the practice midterms he hands out are practically identical to his actual papers and very useful. Overall a great professor, one of the best I've had so far.
Honestly, I hate Kummel for his 8am lecture. But he does manage to make it super entertaining. Definitely cares about the class and makes plenty of jokes to wake you up. He also does a cool demonstration each class which is pretty entertaining. Kummel is also hella jacked for like 70 or whatever. I hope I'm as big as him when I'm his age.
He's funny and looks like JK Simmons. There are 3 midterms which sucks but he has practice exams that help you with the material a lot. Lectures are always tons of fun. Always looks like he enjoys teaching.
really interesting lecture
his lecture is awesome.
Best Chem Professor I have every met in UCSD
Really entertaining class, Kummel cracks a lot of jokes. He hosts 2 practice exams and gives 2 more takehome exams every time before an actual exam and those help a lot. Funny story, for exo reactions that won't stop and can't stop until a reagent is all used up, he played Miley Cyrus's "We Can't Stop" in lecture. Loved going to his classes.
He makes good analogies during lecture to help understanding. I went to almost every lecture but I rarely read the book, every time I attempted to I'd start sleeping. BUT I bombed the last 2 midterms because of the conceptual questions, it would've really helped if I had just trudged through the chapters so I could understand those questions
Not much homework, iClicker questions are extra credit, but the tests are insanely difficult. The first midterm is fairly easy, but the other ones are horriblw.
Dr. Kummel does a great job at teaching and definitely prepares his students with practice midterms and practice finals. His exams are difficult, however, they are completely fair. Reading the textbook is essential for this class, and Kummel emphasizes that quite well. 10/10 rec and would take again for certain.
He is a really funny lecturer and he plays videos and makes jokes to keep your attention. The first midterm is extremely easy but after that, you should study extensively for his exams. It is nice that they are multiple choice and you get a lot of preparation with all the practice exams that he gives you.
His class wasn't terribly hard. As long as you study the practice midterms you're pretty much good to go. If you know (or even memorize) how to do the math problems alone you're guaranteed at least a B. I did fairly well on all 3 midterms, but that final wrecked me. It's possibly to succeed just put in work. Oh, also read the book.
Excellent professor! I learned a lot about cancer from his class! He cares his students and if you follow his instructions, you should get an A.
dont do it
He's really funny and incorporates demos into his lectures. He gives out several practice midterms and goes over the answers which helps a lot with studying. However, his lectures are really fast, but he does print out copies of the lecture slides for the whole class.
He's a really chill teacher and funny but his tests have no chill. He uploads notes and practice tests online, along with hosting 2 practice exams before every test but its still pretty hard for those who arent good with chem. Half the questions are conceptual and the other half are math based. Good luck if you have his class.
Tests were the most insane thing ever. Still, if it wasn't for those tests, I wouldn't have been prepared for CHEM 6C. Study his practice tests word for word. Go to office hours. Lectures are early in the morning so beware. He loves to test us on conceptual chemistry so study more of that. If you want to actually learn chemistry, take Dr. Kummel.
His lecture begins at 8:00, but since he has jokes and funny videos, you never feel sleepy. He explains things well and always spends the first 20 mins to review. His midterms are not easy, but he gives you three practice midterms which are 60% similar to the actual. If you take his 6B, don't skip the lecture, do practice midterms, and sleep well!
Professor Kummel is great! He explains things crystal clear and genuinely cares for all students! Though the class is early in the morning, he makes everyone concentrate by his jokes and demos. Practice exams are really helpful and his grading policies are not too harsh. Definitely take him if you can wake up early!
He doesn't have podcast. Gives a lot of practice questions. However, he will talk about some random extra stuff that's not on the chapter and expect you to remember it (It will appear on the tests). He expects you to read the textbook in advance so his lecture is fast. And if you don't remember everything he said, I'm sorry. But he is a great prof.
Lectures go really fast and pretty vaguely, heavily reliant on reading the chapter before class yourself. Mostly a self-teach class and also has one of the hardest tests I've ever seen. He is very knowledgeable, just not great at teaching basics before specifics.
He's funny if you have his sense of humor. The lectures are fast and pretty vague as he expects that you have read the textbook before class. He also does pretty cool demos every class to keep everyone awake at 8 am.
He's a smart guy but can't communicate his knowledge very well. He goes through the information too quickly and never goes into detail, rarely explaining stuff that's important for the 3 MIDTERMS (and final). You're better off reading the textbook and his slides, not worth getting up at 8 am. Pro: midterms are similar to practice ones
Professor Kummel's a good guy, he's funny and he really tries his best to teach the best he can, but if you dont do well with listening to lecture for 70 minutes, you lose focus and this lectures dont help. his exams are usually really different then what you learn in class so its really difficult to do well on them. overall avoid him if you can
There were 3 midterms - it felt like there was always an upcoming test. Additionally, Prof Kummel expects you to come to class with an understanding of that day's lecture from the textbook so do the readings. There are clicker questions but they are extra credit. He makes a ton of jokes & does demos every lecture to try to keep you awake at 8am.
Kummels lecture slides summarize key points in each chapter section, but the midterms and final are MUCH more specific and situational. Practicing a TON of sample problems is the best tip I can give you. While the practice midterms online are similar to the actual ones in its format, the questions are still difficult. Avoid taking this class.
I skipped almost all lectures since I work off campus and dont find myself motivated to wake up for 8ams every other day. Kummels lecture slides are vague after taking the midterms. The questions on exams are very situational. Youre better off finding a different professor or teaching yourself this course for 10 weeks.
Kummel is a good professor. He provides three practice exams and two review sessions per midterm and before the test. He cares about his students' academic. However, his tests are extremely hard. No joke. Heavy concept and math problems that he expects you to know well. No matter how hard I studied for his tests, I didn't score well.
Professor Kummel is honestly the most respected professor I have had so far. However, as a professor, he just does not do a great job at teaching the material. I stopped going to lecture after week4 because they were pointless. The analogies were funny but not too helpful. I'm telling you right now, if you want a high grade, take a different class.
Dr. Kummel is one of the few professors that will basically make 2 study sessions/ practice exams before an exam. He also makes Zoom Telecons and really demonstrates his dedication to the class. However, I just did not adjust well with his teaching style and found his tests to be extremely hard.
He is a great professor overall, and his lectures are very informational and entertaining for a 8am. However, his exams are less numerical and more conceptual/ situational. Reading the textbook before his lectures is highly recommended, as he'll go over material beyond the textbook and expect you to understand it for exam day.
I loved having Kummel. The practice tests were the key to doing well in the class. The curve at the end helped as well. Just don't try to wing it.
Gives a ton of practice exams that are nearly identical to real exams, slides are posted online and handed out in class, makes direct and indirect connections between concepts learned in class and interesting demos/you tube videos/jokes. Went out of way to host online review sessions. If you like food references and good professors, take his class.
While Kummel makes a lot of jokes to keep people awake at 8am the teaching style wasn't one that lead to a good understanding of the material. He uses a lot of analogies, I barely got any of them. Going to lecture felt like a routine stand up comedy act, but in a different language. Had a 3.9 going in left with a 3.8 coming out. Not recommended.
Kummel was more difficult than I expected. His tests are deceptively hard and he goes very fast. I found the practice exams somewhat helpful, but I relied primarily on my own independent study from the book to understand major concepts.
love him! dr. kummel is hilarious with his food memes! lecture is the usual, not so boring. beware of lots of readings though. test is easier than most homeworks.
Dr. Kummel knows a lot about chemistry. He explains concepts clearly and uses real life analogy to help us understand better. He is also very patient when answering our questions. His class goes by very fast. If you don't pay attention, it will be very hard to catch up. If you really hope to learn chemistry, take his class!
Dr. Kummel is an approachable professor who keeps the class entertained and has demos every class. He doesn't podcast, so you need to go to class. But he gives 3-4 practice tests for every midterm (there are 3) and often copies problems from these practice tests onto the actual exam. If you study the practice tests, an A is definitely achievable!
He gives several practice midterms before each of the 3 midterms and holds review sessions over zoom. The practice midterms are very similar to the exams. I never grasped the concepts because the hw's had many problems not taught in class and he explains the concepts very quickly. Many people got A's because 85% is an A, 70% is a B, etc.
Professor Kummel really cares about each student and offers so many practice exams. He literally tells you that the exams look very similar to the practice exams, so if you study those you should be fine.
Chem 6B and chem for me, in general, is pretty difficult to grasp, so obviously, this class was a challenge. But, Prof Kummel made the experience much less painful. His lecture and slide style takes time to get used to, but he really cares about his students with all the practice and attention he dedicates.
Kummel is a smart guy and good at teaching, but his cold personality makes me feel very unmotivated and unsupported in this class. I preferred my 3-star chem prof over him. Pros - Has lots of practice exams Cons - Not empathetic at all - Exams are only 20 questions (1 question = 5%, easy to do poorly) - 3 exams = nearly your entire class grade
Dr. Kummel is one of my top professors at UCSD. His lectures are AMAZING to attend, although neither lecture nor discussion was mandatory. Tests are a little difficult and all MCQ, so you need to have a decent grasp of the subject for them. If you get a 95 or higher on both midterms, you are exempt from final and get an automatic A+. 100% recommend
Very enthusiastic and fun prof. He cracks a few jokes every now and then and lectures have a few demos that are also pretty fun. Prepare to spend hours of studying efficiently for a passing grade. Exams are the some of the hardest I've ever seen, very tricky conceptual problems. Take if you want to learn Chem but avoid if you want to save ur gpa.
Professor Kummel is brilliant. He’s funny and presents entertaining lectures. One thing is for sure; you need to prepare for his exams. He provides two practice exams for every one of them, and they’re great study materials, but in-depth knowledge of the material is needed to pass his exams.
Dr. Kummel is a very interesting professor, his lectures are very entertaining and he presents a lot of demos about the topics. However, 90% of your grade will come from the midterms/finals and from my experience, the questions were mostly conceptual and often tricky so it is crucial to study for them. He does gives two practice exams per midterm.
He was a cool guy. Cracked a lot of jokes and took breaks from lecturing for cool demos. Exams were tricky because he never really taught us how to do the conceptual problems, and the only things that helped were the 1-2 practice exams. Every exam had a bonus question, and his grading scale was generous (70-85 is a B, 85+ is an A)
He definitely knows the content, but his teaching style was not it for me. His tests were multiple choice, had many typos and weird wordings, and your grade depends heavily on them. His lectures are entertaining, but his assessments are just not it.
I took him because of his high ratings, but his class was impossibly difficult. He would mess around in class and barely teach in order to do fun demos for the students, but in return, I learned nothing. I had to teach myself everything, and even then, majority of his tests had nothing to do with the lecture material and were multiple choice A-E.
Chem6b itslef is not a hard class, but I don't understand why about 50% of the Achieve question modules ( homework) are questions on topics we would learn the week after the whole assignment is due... Maybe it's his way of getting students to preview, but it ruins the whole point of practicting things we know. Other than that great guy.
Kummel is knowledgable but executes things in poor fashion; no recorded lecture sessions, typos on important materials, crammed slides, etc. The midterms questions are deceiving and are insanely difficult for a lower division class. If you're looking for a professor that puts more emphasis on material comprehension take Brydges' sessions instead.
Love professor Kummel. He makes lectures interesting and has a demo every lecture to help us understand concepts and break up the lecture a bit. There are ample opportunities to make up points missed on the homework in class, and if you get a 95 or above on both midterms you are exempt from the final.
Professor Kummel is an amazing professor who will challenge the students. He also allows us to challenge our knowledge by doing iClicker questions during lectures as well as entertain us by doing demonstrations during the lectures. Entropy, a measure of a system disorder, That shows the disruption of system order. (First two lines of the poem)
His lecture are quite engaging with the demos, and your grade in the class is mainly decided by two midterms and a final. Ultimately, the tests are pretty difficult, but he always posts 2 practice midterms before each midterm that are basically the same as the midterm. PV equals NRT, assumes that gasses act perfectly. (survivor challenge)
Prof. Kummel is nice and humorous, and I love his lecture so much. He has a survival challenge that if you have 95% in the 2 midterms you do not need to have final if you write a poem about chemistry. (survivor challenge) It tells us whether reactions Will occur spontaneously If the change in free energy Is negative, we can all agree (4 lines)
Professor Kummel is very experienced, he knows the material well and is able to give clear explanations. He does demos during lecture. He allows you to skip the finals if you get a 95/105 on 2 midterms. Lastly I would like to share the following poem "Nothing is more amazing than esterification, a very useful condensation reaction" (1st sentence)
I love Professor Kummel's lecture style! It's a must to attend lectures to really absorb all the concepts. He has a Survivor Challenge for students who score high on the two midterms, where you write a poem and skip the final. Here's my first two lines: "There are two letters which I love oh so, For they decide which way the reaction will go"
Proffesor Kummel was soo funy, his lectures were super fun, and helpful. This is the beggining of the poem I wrote to complete the survivor challenge: Enthalpy, a word so rare, But really not too hard to bear, It measures heat, in and out as it goes, In chemical reactions, as everything flows.
Professor Kummel was very funny and made going to class very enjoyable. The lecture was always engaging and the metaphors he used were always memorable. He reviews a lot of the material which made it easy to grasp the concepts easily if you did not get it the first time through.
Excellent professor who provides plenty of resources to succeed in his class. His zoom sessions are very helpful for the midterms. He has a survivor challenge which gives an opportunity to skip the final. Two lines from my poem: "Fluorine, the most electronegative element you'll stumble upon. It's used to make plastics, just like Teflon"
Professor Kummel has engaging lectures and displays knowledge of material. Getting above 95% on both midterms gives exemption from the final. Here are the first two lines of my poem: "I'm to tell a story of an element dating back to days of old, A tale of wonder and magic surrounding star-studded gold"
Professor Kummel is really funny and makes his lectures engaging, and presents the concepts clearly. Your grade is mainly based on tests so take the practice midterms that he post and go to the midterm review sessions. Here are a few lines from my poem: "In electronics, it plays a key role, From computer chips to solar cells, it's like gold."
In the lab, where chemists play, The ideal gas law won't delay, PV equals nRT, is what they say, For pressure, volume, and temperature to weigh. From gasses in a balloon to the air we breathe, The ideal gas law we must perceive, Especially for chemistry, it's an essential tool, Even Southwest Airlines uses it as a rule.
Chemical Equilibrium Constant Poem Chemical reactions can be quite complex With many players and moving objects to flex But there's a number that tells us where they stand The equilibrium constant, a crucial command At equilibrium, the forward and backward rate Of the chemical reaction, will balance and abate...
Practice tests provided, read EVERYTHING in the lecture slides and master the PTs, you'll be okay. Allowed a two-sided cheat sheet on tests. Homework every week- average above a 90% to get full HW credit. iClicker app used for extra credit in the HW category- attendance not mandatory, though. Posts "run-through" lectures- no podcast.
Dr. Kummel was one of my favorite professors. He is funny and makes chem 6b a little less miserable. His grading curve is very large, a 70% - 85% is a B. His midterms and final are exactly like the practice tests that he makes, so I would recommend studying those.
Such a hard class, brought back my hatred for chem. Always walk into class with a positive mindset but walk out wanting to give up. His ppts are ugly, too many colors that don't work well together. Only 1 cheat sheet allowed for final when other profs allow 3. Homework and extra credit made 9.1% of final grade, the rest were all midterms and final.
Makes inappropriate/insensitive jokes. Many of these positive reviews are written by winners of the survivor challenge and don't reflect class. Do not take this class if you struggle with mcqs. Test questions are difficult, require knowledge of tiny details that he doesn't teach. Don't take if you want a conceptual understanding of the material.
Although funny and hilarious, the class itself was tedious and exhausting. I dropped the class after the first midterm as he uses a point system instead of a percentage system. While I had a B percentage wise, I had a D in his class point wise. Makes some unhinged comments too. Very fast-paced and slides are very colorful in a horrible way.
If you were not an A student in 6A, expect to struggle. Slides are badly organized and class is excruciating. Lecture and homework material are not useful for exams: the 3 midterms and cumulative final require thorough studying of practice exams only, and make up majority of your grade with no wiggle room.
The lectures were clear and funny, the practice exams are extremely helpful when it comes to the actual midterms and final. If you just study and go to practice it is almost impossible to fail. My first two lines of my poem was "In America, a new element was made / By Glenn T. Seaborg and his group, their intellect portrayed"
First few lines of my poem: Of all the equations we have learned in this class, My favorite is the one about ideal gas. Although chemistry can get challenging we all can agree, It doesn't get much simpler than PV = nRT.
Good professional and interesting lectures. Four exams which if you do not prepare well for you won't do as well as you could. His exams are all the same as the practices so that makes it easier. Also, homework is overloading like other chem teachers. Good professor option to take.
I would recommend Professor Kummel to those who like more conceptual problems. For each midterm, I put in around 12+ hours to study (including practice midterms and office hours). You can get an A-/A if you have an 85% and above. The first two lines of my poem are: I am found in eye drops and insulation/and to a magnet, I hold an attraction.
Professor Kummel made lectures fun and provided funny analogies and metaphors. There are 3 midterms and a final. You can do great on if you really study the practice tests provided. Here is a line from my poem from the survivor challenge: "Iron has much importance that cannot be forgot, in our bodies and bloodstreams, Fe can be found a lot"
Kummel teaches in a hilarious manner, connecting concepts to everyday situations. The material is harder than 6A, so you have to put work into it. He allows 2 page cheat sheets and provides practice midterms, similar to the real test. Fully understand the concepts and you'll be fine. Poem: Chemistry is fun, here's the tea It's pretty much PV=nRT
Dr. Kummel truly wants his students to succeed. He provides many opportunities for you to learn the material. He hosts practice exams that simulate the real thing, and he goes over every question right after. Here are a few lines of my poem: There is no element like Chlorine, Making the pools I swim in clean.
Dr. Kummel's lectures and live demos were very engaging and entertaining to watch. He also offers a survivor challenge where if you get a 95% average on the 3 exams, you don't have to take the final (but you do have to write a poem)! Here are some lines from my survivor poem: "There's nothing quite like sodium / The only element that tastes so yum"
Professor Kummel is a knowledgable and entertaining instructor. He offers engaging lectures, and helps make sense of difficult conceptual ideas through humor. He has effective resources to help you succeed in the class. Here are a few lines of a poem he inspired me to write: Delta G = Delta H - T Delta S; My favorite equation, I must confess."
Professor Kummel's lectures are fun because of the demos and analogies he uses to explain concepts. There are three midterms, but if you really study the practice tests carefully, they are definitely manageable. Here's a line from my survivor poem: There is no element cooler than Bromine/With bromine, no fire will gleam.
Kummel is an amazing lecturer and wants his students to succeed. Lectures are not recorded so even though they are not mandatory I highly recommend going. He gives plenty of practice problems and goes over all the practice tests giving you exactly what you need to succeed. He does love his tricky conception questions, only bad thing I can say
do. not. take. Kummel. His tests are super hard and make no sense compared to his lectures. His class is graded on THREE midterms (100 points each) and 30 points of HW. I genuinely can't stand his tests they make zero sense and they're so hard to complete. Please take literally any other professor
Professor Kummel is a really great teacher and his lectures are very engaging! He uses a lot of metaphors in class but he is really funny. Here's a couple lines from the poem he inspired me to write about my favorite chemical element, gold: Gold, oh gold, with your atomic number 79, I do not know another element that is so fine.
Rambles about the devil, Southwest Airlines, and Texas during lectures making it hard to understand content. Professor Kummel is the classic chemistry prof who is very knowledgable but has trouble communicating information and teaching normally. Also any rating with a poem is a winner of his survivor challenge which he tells students to post.
His lecture slides are so crowded with words and images, it becomes a little confusing to understand the point. His tests are pretty hard, basically all conceptual in so many different ways, even in the calculation problems. Only plus is that cheat sheets are free to have anything on it and the practice tests are pretty similar to tests.
He's funny but his analogies make it more confusing, his slides are crowded, and he's not a good lecturer (reads off slides). Discussion isn't mandatory, homework was not helpful for the tests. The 3 midterms and final gets 1 cheat sheet, his practice tests are very similar. All A+ people could only get 1 wrong on all midterms, 20 of 200 people.
His teaching style didn't work for me. I only managed to do well because of previous chemistry knowledge from high school. I would recommend doing all of the practice tests and attending the in person ones if possible. Tests are conceptual and tricky but are similar to the practice tests.
Kummel's class is challenging but manageable with consistent effort. His teaching style relies heavily on analogies, which can be hit or miss. Unstuckstudy ai helped me prep for the conceptual tests alongside the practice exams.
his style of lecture just didn't work for me. he crams his slides and then uses odd metaphors to explain them which are very hit or miss, and if you miss them, you get lost really quickly. he's a really nice guy and the practice tests are the same as the real exams, but if you plan on going into chem he doesnt provide you with the best base
Homework is on achieve and pts missed on the homework can be recovered in class w/ iclicker points (for correctness). Attendance for lectures & discussion isn't mandatory; but every class has a clicker questions to recover points. Three midterms but one is dropped and he has practice tests that are similar to the actual exam.
This professor is amazing. He's very funny and has so many analogies that help you understand more difficult concepts. He records practice lectures that allow you to get ahead. Three midterms but if you get 95% on all of them you don't have to take the final and automatic A+. HW is combined with IClicker but manageable.
The only reason you should take Kummel is if you have to decide between him and Mark Young. His RMP score is so inflated because he gets 14-15 people every quarter who get a guaranteed A+ if they somehow land 95% or above on all his tests, hence all the cheesy poems/5 star reviews. If you aren't a prodigy AP Chem veteran bookworm, don't expect much
Lectures are really fast and messy, gives cheat sheet and practice tests that are just like the exam which saved me, definitely harder than 6A, discussion not mandatory/useless, iclickers for attendance, funny and nice but not good at teaching, if you get 95+ on all tests you don't have to take final, tests a good mix of conceptual and calculations
If you are good at chemistry, take the class for the chance to skip a final if you get over a 95% on all 3 midterms. He's spent many years in the chemistry field, so he expects you to know content that he deems obvious, but is unclear to the average student. Therefore, he doesn't always explain content thoroughly. Funny and nice professor tho.
where do I even begin lol. Well, as you may have read, he has the 95+ rule which rewards students who have already taken AP chem and therefore are familiar with the content. However, as someone who didn't take AP chem, this class was a trainwreck. He cannot teach to save his life and he's so lazy, which is good and bad i guess.
taking chem 6b with professor kummel was the worst decision of my life. on top of the fact that he sucks at lecturing and his tests are awful, the book for the chem 6 series is also CHEEKS... chem 6c please be kind to us
Dawg just don't take him.
Kummel will claim that the practice tests are exactly like the exams- they're not- but they are extremely helpful. He will throw curveballs on the exams. Always one extra credit question. Lectures are hilarious (w/ slightly offensive but harmless jokes) and cool demos every lecture. Will let you skip final if midterm scores all >95%. Messy slides.
professor kummel made me hate chemistry. studying for his tests were actually a nightmare because i would use study ai to help me break down the practice exam questions and they would consistently say that the answers he marked weren't even right. i wouldve taken a class at 8pm just to avoid this man that does not know how to teach
Cluttered slides taken from other professors and difficult to follow if you haven't taken AP chem. Wouldn't recommend taking this professor.
In the middle of lecture, the TAs did a little experiment. The homework is tough. I wasn't able to participate in the "survivor challenge" but I still ended up with an A in the class. The practice exams are a really good resource. You get a double-sided cheat sheet and the midterms have 21 questions and the midterms have 31 questions.
3 midterms and a final (unless you got 95% or above on midterms). One midterm is dropped and replaced with final grade. Homework is on achieve. Lectures overall were ok. There was experiments midway to showcase what we're learning. If you aren't good in chem, it will be a hard class. I personally spent a couple days before tests to teach myself.
Professor Kummel knows his stuff, but can't transfer that into teaching those who don't already know the concepts. The grading system is 3 Midterms, Hw, and the Final. Each exam has 21 questions and the final 31. So there's little to no room for error, and the exams are mostly concept based. Stay active if you want to do well. Avoid if you can.
Slides for lectures are cluttered and quick. If you plan to type or write them, you probably won't be able to keep up. Discussions are unhelpful and not mandatory, neither is lectures. Exams are a mix of mostly conceptual and calculation questions. Opportunity to drop one of the midterms for final. Tough class if you aren't already good at chem.
To start, most the good reviews come from survivor challenge winners and are therefore not super relatable to most people. Survivor challenge winners get more than a 95 on all 3 midterms (yes there are 3 plus the final). The only things in the grade are 3 midterms the final and 30 points of homework so it is extremely test heavy. BEWARE: TEST HEAVY
As someone who excelled in 6A from a different professor, this class was an absolute disaster. The slides are cluttered and lectures are difficult to learn anything honestly. If you value your GPA and sanity, run from this class. Take literally anyone else for chemistry. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy.
Make sure you go to class, that's the best way to succeed in this class. I found his method of teaching entertaining. He has his TAs do a demonstration for each class, which I loved. Doing his practice midterms and finals is what helped me succeed.
As someone who didn't take AP chem, and had little chemistry foundations, I found it difficult to understand the concepts of chem 6b from his in-person lectures. His slides were poorly designed and I didn't understand his quirky analogies. Discussion were not helpful and the course/your grade is based solely on 30 hw points, 3 midterms and final.
The format of teaching simply didn't work for me despite going to in-person lectures, and the practice exams. Since this class is test heavy and I didn't do so well on 2 of the midterms, it ultimately tanked my grade. If possible, avoid taking him. If you can't, I'd suggest getting a tutor/ outside help ASAP
I succeeded in this class because I'm a good test taker - if you're not, it'll be much harder to get a good grade. Your grade is HW/iClicker (30 points) + 3 midterms (100 points each) + final (100 points). Lectures are not recorded. I didn't find their format the best for my learning style (text & graph heavy slides, lots of analogies/jokes.)
hit or miss. I hated his teaching style. Very nice guy/TAs and demos in class but rushes lecture and feels like you need lots of previous chem knowledge. If you are a good test taker take him because he gave practice midterms before that were very similar. I attended almost every lecture and ended up with a B- after a lot of tears and hair loss
Andy was so much fun to learn from, his analogies are silly and provide nice engagement during lectures. The class is hard and is pretty dense in material, but it's overall manageable. Don't take him if you struggle with self-study though, or crowded slides.
If you have to take Andrew kummel or Mark Young take Andrew. However his classes are lecture heavy with him commonly rambling about random topics that are vaguely related to chem. 4 tests overall that count for 90% of your grade. His rate my professor is heavily inflated as he requires students to give him a good review for his survivor challenge.
Fun professor that created an engaging atmosphere through demonstrated experiments. However, being someone who is bad at multiple choice exams it was a pretty hard class. I wish there that were like points for working through the problem. Highly recommend attending the practice midterm sessions even though they are late!
i hated this class. it might've been the fact that i'm not a great test taker, and this class is mostly graded on 4 tests, but i also felt that his slides/lecturing did not help me learn. wouldn't recommend him unless you have a good foundation of previous chem knowledge because you will struggle in this class if you don't understand his analogies.
His lecture pace is extremely fast especially for more difficult topics. He tries to explain via analogies a lot but they often don't make sense. He claims that the practice midterms will have very similar questions to the real midterms which is not true.
Chem with him will be the bane of your existence if you dont have concepts down beforehand and if you dont show up to lecture. The lectures are a mess and the exams are going to be the most visually unappealing ones you will ever take.
L E C T U R E S A R E V E R Y M E S S Y. You will not get by in this class without reading the textbook chapters beforehand. Also, Kummel goes over material at a lightning-fast pace, to the point where we were like 4 textbook sections ahead of other Chem 6B classes. I only did well because I studied w/ flashcards and his practice exams
You will do great if you go to lecture and study. He has a grading policy where you can replace one midterm with final grade. I got a 60 on the first midterm and ended with an A+ in the class. He provides clear outlines on each question that will be on the tests and provides A LOT of practice tests.
His slides very messy and uses a lot of random analogies. However, I got a tutor which helped a lot, and I went to office hours every time. His practice tests are very similar to exams you just have to be willing to put in the work to get an A, understand every slide, and practice test! Not as hard to do well in his class as people make it seem.
