horrible teacher that is not at all helpful or considerate. Thinks everybody slacks off when he can't really teach himself. doesn't curve
by the way, this is ANDREW Kustin, not his wife .. although they must both be good. MR. Kustin really gets excited when he's teaching, he knows his stuff and is eager to help students
Mr. Kustin, too hard, doesn't curve, thinks everyone slacks off, and is unwilling to help you if he thinks this about you. Not likely to pass. Beware, steer clear in my opinion.
Dr. Kustin is very demanding but he's not too bad. If you go to class and use the reviews he posts on his website it's hard not to be prepared for his exams. If you make an effort to find him with your questions it pays off in the long run.
great professor, doesn't curve, but drops a lot of grades. easy class.
Dr. Kustin is not a good professor...he does not teach the material at all. He is insensitive and can be quite rude! I would not recommend his class to anyone.
If you can get over his crazy hand gestures and his pure "weirdness", he is a nice person. A lot of quizzes. Tests are cumulative and hard. I liked calculus before now I don't because this class was down right hard.
He is a great teacher. He keeps the class interesting with his jokes. You only have two homework asssignments a week, but two quizzes too. Great teacher if you like corny jokes and can stay entertained with his little humor.
The material covered is very hard, but Prof. Kustin does his best to explain it. He sometimes seemed ill-prepared. He tries to answer all student questions, but this sometimes lead to a lot of wasted time in class. You have to study your butt off if you want to make a good grade.
I really liked Dr. Kusitn. There were times when I got really confused with stuff and he did a great job of explaining it in a way that I could understand. I thought he was a fair grader. If you have problems, the best thing to do is go see him because he will help you out (if you know what i mean).
Very helpful even outside of the classroom very straight forward...pass the final pass the course
Good professor, he is kind of weird though. He curves your final grade, he says if u make a c or better in the final, u get that grade for the course.
He is great with algebra, but not so good with analysis. The course material is very hard, but if you seek him out with questions, your grade will reflect that. Dr. Kustin is very quirky and fun to watch.
Good teacher overall. Tends to teach to the smartest kids at times. Will work with you though.
Very good teacher, knows his stuff. Also very difficult tests, based mostly on theory whereas quizzes are based on problems. Study hard for the final, if you put the effort in your grade will reflect it.
very attractive! his tests are extremly difficult...dont take the class if you dont want to work for your grade (i got an a but i had to work super hard). quizes are easy but have no relevance to tests. also class helps you learn subject but not necessarily get an A in the class...go anyway though cause he likes that
I took the Honors section. We had all had AP Calc in high school,we figured it would be easy.WRONG.1/2 of the class dropped,1/4 failed and the others did just ok. Instead of solidifying what I had learned previously, he made it unclear and everything more difficult than it had to be.If you are not a math major, don't take his class!
I had him a couple of years ago, he's a good guy. He's fair when it comes to grading. For instance, he allowed for our final exam grade to be our final grade if the overall average is low. He's kind of frantic but you'll pay attention in class, that's for sure. Again, extremely good guy.
Discrete math is a hard subject, but he makes it ten times harder, I dropped with about half the class. Mind you, he may be your only option, but avoid him if you can.
Do not take this class. Dr. Kustin is probably a nice guy but is not a very good teacher. If you want an A be sure you took BC Calculus in high school. Tests are amazingly difficult and it is almost impossible to follow his lectures. Is not very kind with grading and doesn't give out a lot of partial credit. Good Luck if you are taking this class.
Dr. Kustin is a hard teacher! He is a nice man, but his testa are much harder than his homework problems or his old tests. If you love math, you will probably enjoy his class. If not, don't take this class.
Horrible professor. He is really bad at explaining material. When grading, he gives very little partial credit, which makes earning a good grade nearly impossible. He knows calculas very well and seems to be troubled if you don't understand it with the same clarity. After getting an A in calc one and two I will be lucky to pass this class.
He doesn't collect HW, and the tests and quizzes don't look much like the HW. Instead we had to look at previous exams to know what to expect and study as much as possible. All the other 241 sections got open note tests or atleast a note sheet. Kustin gives you nothing. You are on your own with this guy.I would not recommend him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM EVEN IF IT IS YOUR LAST OPTION! I'm a math major and I have a 4.0, so I thought that i would be fine in this class. WRONG! he said we could answer the questions in any legal manner and then took full credit off my test because he "didnt like my style" He is useless and impossible. He should be fired and put in jail.
Gives very little partial credit, if your solution isn't 100% correct, don't expect to get more than 1/3 of the points for that question. Exams are definitely on the difficult side, over half the people in my section were gone before the drop date. He is quite willing to answer questions though. Nevertheless, I would say avoid him if you can.
Gave me my first failing grade in my entire life. He has poor social skills so its hard to ask him one on one questions. Will not work with you and will fail you and not think twice about it. This is by far the worst teach i have ever taking!!!
He's very knowledgeable about the subject material, but doesn't teach it well.A lot of hw, weekly quizes on hw, exams are pretty hard. But if one studies and learns subject matter on their own, easy to pass the class.Funny guy sometimes and is willing to work with you.Final grade is partially based on whether he thinks you understood the class.
I really had to work for an A; 4 tests, you can drop one. Quiz every week on one of the homework problems, which is really easy and you can drop one. Maple lab is really easy. Tests are extremely difficult. He knows his stuff but can't really teach it. Pretty funny. Will give you a good grade if he thinks you knew the material. Stressful class.
SUPER nice, but his tests are insanely hard. I feel as though I spent every waking hour of my life doing calc II problems, but I made a B+ in the end so it was worth it. Study VERY hard, NEVER skip class and ESPECIALLY recitation, and make sure he knows who you are. I did that by going to his evening problem sessions. oh, and he will curve your final grade, because I should've made a low C based on my exam grades.
This man is absolutely absurd. He gives no partial credit whatsoever on exams and if you learn to do a problem other than the way he teaches it he counts it wrong. Do not take this professor or you will have to work just to get a C for the class. I am a very good math student and I could not maintain this class.
This guy is ridiculously hard. His quizzes are fairly easy, but his tests are ridiculous and he's a tough grader. You will be doing calculus at all hours of the night if you decide to take this guy. Consider this a warning.
Dr Kustin is a genius. This means even astronomically hard calc problems are a walk in the park. So he just doesn't explain them. The homework isnt required so dont kid yourself, you wont do it. His lectures are required and useless. I studied out of the book for hours and I failed the course. I aced calc 1. do the math. watch out.
Tough grader. Nice guy though. Tests are extremely difficult. Quizzes are from homework. TA goes over during recitation. Study hard by looking at his exam notes he posts before each test. DO THOSE PROBLEMS. Overall, expect to work extremely hard if you take him.
The man probably gives the hardest tests I've ever taken. He makes it more difficult than it needs to be. His example problems are never as hard as his tests, he always assigns a ton of homework which is not graded, but you'll do it if you have hopes of passing. I failed every one of his tests but got a C+ due to the curve. Don't take him.
He is very smart. He understands everything he is teaching but he doesn't relate what he knows very well to the class. I studied quite a bit and only received a C overall. Homework isn't required so you really have to want to do good. He's not interested in you passing of failing. He really doesn't care.
He obviously knows his stuff, but does not teach it very well to my perspective. First of all, taking notes is sometimes impossible because his handwriting is terrible; that absolutely frustrated me. Also, his tests are crazy hard, and he gives little to no extra credit at all. I even remember him taking off points for leaving off an EQUALS SIGN!!!
Class isnt easy to begin with, and kustin makes it SO MUCH HARDER. He is smart but tests are very hard. Do NOT take him. Gives points off for no reason.
Calc 2 is a hard subject but he makes it impossible, leaves nasty remarks on your tests and gives barley any partial credit. His tests are impossible and no one I knew got above a 50 on any of them. When you ask questions he's insulting in his answers. Do. Not. Take. Him.
Not that good. Makes it much harder than it needs to be. He jumps around a lot. Willing to answer questions, except he'll concentrate on that and not teach the class. It would seem good that all his old exams are online, and there are multiple quizzes, but it isn't. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU FEEL LIKE TORTURING YOURSELF.
Although his handwriting can be illegible at times, Kustin is both incredible knowledgeable and incredibly enthusiastic about what he teaches. He makes [funny] jokes frequently and he really believes in challenging his students. He tries to avoid the trivial number crunching and strives to teach us the deeper implications and I really respect that.
I do have 2 agree with the situation that much of what the teacher teaches is unclear. I took the class in Summer & it was really horrible. I study 10 hours every day & I don't that much progress. I find it difficult to learn these concepts when it feels like I need to memorize many of the proofs just to get decent grades on these tests. avoid him
HORRIBLE!!!! He is goes so quickly and gets mad when you ask a question. He gives one quiz a week with one question, so if you get it wrong you get a zero. He even said himself that it is extremely difficult to survive his class. DONT TAKE IT!!!!!!
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. I would not be surprised if this man had Aspergers. By the final there were 7 people in a previously 30 person class
At first his class did not seem that hard so I tried to stick with it. The class seems like its set up well until you take the first test. He never gave us much(useful) material to review for them and they were totally different from what we had expected. My advise, DO NOT TAKE HIM! If you have to sign up for his class, transfer.
Overall, the course was hard. There were times where I didn't even understand his lectures. It helps if you read the chapter or section ahead of time, so you won't be lost. If you take his class, be prepared to study really hard. I got an A, so can you guys.
Dr. Kustin is very passionate about mathematics. He does no curve and expects you to learn the material. This is a hard course, but you most definitely LEARN.
This professor is AWFUL. He could make simple addition seem difficult. It's obvious he is a very intelligent man, but he is a terrible teacher. He chooses the most difficult problems for tests and doesn't curve at all! Avoid him at all costs!
Assigns HW but isn't graded. Quizzes every other week. 2 exams and a Final. Doesn't get the opportunity to teach during class, just goes over questions about HW. Methods are sporadic and very hard to follow. Make sure you buy the book and go by it. Your final grade will pretty much be determined by the final.
He is a very nice guy and he knows the material. His teaching style would be great if the book was clear in any manner or form. His syllabus is rough only having 2 exams and a final. He is very responsive to emails and is willing to help during office hours. I feel as if having linear algebra before this course would have helped.
DO NOT TAKE! At first he seemed nice & helpful, but ended being extremely hard. Is not helpful at all, philosophy is you either know it or don't. 1/2 class dropped, the remaining 1/2 still failed. Doesn't answer questions in class b/c he goes off in his own calc world. If you even deviate from the right answer slightly, he will mark it all wrong
DON'T TAKE HIM. Kustin really isn't an awful teacher but his grading is terribly rigid. Before I dropped the class, I received a 60% on the lone exam I took. That was actually a good score considering 10 kids got a 0/50. 3 exams and a final, with 5 point quizzes once a week. No curves at all. Its not impossible to do well, but incredibly difficult.
Hardest class I've ever taken. I was a valedictorian in high school and have had nothing but A's and B's in college, until this class. I will be retaking this course with a different professor next semester because I'm doing so poorly. The concepts are tough to grasp and he makes them harder by being EXTREMELY stingy with partial credit. AVOID
STAY AWAY. literally worst professor in the whole school. no amount of studying will prepare you for his tests. he gives no partial credit even for trivial mistakes(mixed up negative signs and such). He is rude to students who ask questions and leaves insults on your tests when you inevitably get something wrong. avoid at all costs.
While he seems like a nice man in lecture, he has an impossible grading style and gives little to no partial credit. He also leaves rude comments on student's quizzes. I highly recommend avoiding his section at all costs. HE ONLY PASSED 6 PEOPLE LAST SEMESTER LIKE WHAT
Kustin is very smart but a horrible teacher. He takes a difficult course and makes it impossible by giving extremely hard questions on his tests, and by handing out little to no partial credit on incorrect answers.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He has a ridiculously strict grading policy, with zero partial credit on wrong answers.
He is all over the place in his lectures and talks to himself.
He is probably the worst teacher I have ever had at USC. He expects you to know everything he is talking about and scolds you for not. I have studied for hours upon hours and still struggled immensely on his tests. He did not offer office hours when I asked and suggested that I drop the class instead of wanting to help me.
DROP HIM NOW!!! Seriously. He's the worst professor. There's a quiz everyday. They way he lectures are horrible and confusing.
Dr. Kustin is easily the hardest professor I've ever taken a class under. He made the class a lot more difficult than it should have been, and his exams were hard to pass. I felt like I had a good understanding of the material after studying, but the complexity of his exams made passing hard to achieve. If you want a decent grade, don't take him.
He's a really tough grader, giving no partial credit , but he really cares about you knowing the material. It's kind of a shove into the real world as in you don't get paid for incorrect work. If you put in the time you will do well in this class. There's a pop quiz every class but it is just one of the homework problems.
By far the worst professor I've had. He doesn't care if you pass. He only cares that he went over the sections as quickly as possible. And questions are ignored
terrible professor. doesn't give partial credit and is all over the place. fortunately, the grade is based off your final grade, not an average, so you can do bad on a test or two and still get an a. basically need to memorize all the old exams he puts online
Genuinely a nice person who memorizes students' names and gives feedback on every quiz, but has the worst lectures and teaching style of any teacher. Avoid taking from him. Get ready to learn from YouTube lectures.
Every day there is a quiz in class and it is a question from the assigned homework, so you can easily do well if you do the homework. If you don't understand a problem on the homework he will work them out in class. Also his old exams he posts on his website are extremely helpful and will prepare you for the exams because they are very similar.
Prof Kustin is very confusing and does not do a good job of teaching. He expects students to know a lot of things that I did not know coming into the class. He also does not explain any methods or processes, just does problems during class. There is a quiz every class and tests are only 5-7 problems, but very tricky. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
Stood up at the board and did a few examples while he talked to himself the entire class every class. impossible to understand even if he did speak clearly. very rude if you don't understand what he is doing and doesn't give partial credit. BUT if you fail everything and make an A on the final you get an A or B in the class. (thank god for chegg)
Very good at giving clear directions on how to complete each problem. He answers questions clearly in class. His lectures are a little slow in the beginning but get better after the first few weeks. His tests can be a little tricky but are not weighed too much.
Best professor ever! He does a great job at helping people in class and loves the subject. Lectures are a little slow and confusing at first but after the second week it gets a lot better so stick with it!!
This class tests your ability on memorization. Why show up when the web can teach you just as well minus the sass. Yeah the problems are easy for you Kustin. You've been doing the same problems for 92 years. Thank you. Save yourselves.
I found him to be horribly rude, dismissive, and demeaning. I'v never had such a bad experience with a professor on a personal level before. He does post great online resources for students to review before quizzes and exams.
He's literally the worst prof I've had. He doesn't respect his students, he rarely ever answers your questions and when he does it's not helpful. He gives incredibly unreasonable tests and quizzes and barely teaches anything. I probably would've gotten the same grade if I wouldn't have gone to class. Do NOT take him.
It was a very difficult class which was made even harder by his tough grading and weird teaching style. He is very unclear on what he wants and expects out of students, and is very strict on his partial credit. He gives lots of quizzes and a few test but your final grade is determined off of the final exam. It can save or fail you.
STOP. DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT THIS. Lectures are all over the place and he often makes mistakes and fails to completely to explain topics. Expects you to be an expert in every topic and rule prior to this point. Save your grade forgiveness, everything weighted off the final exam. Dont. take it during the summer if you have to. focus on old finals
Never take him unless you want a semester full of unnecessary stress.
Best Professor in Math!
Great person and respected professor. Easy class but you learn a lot!
Cares about students and you can get an A even if you fail throughout the year.
I was hopeful that this would be my 4th and final semester of math, but now I'm not sure I'll pass. Terrible at teaching, knows everything and is rude to those who don't. Will make you know the hardest problems and I hope you aced Calc 2,haha, cuz you'll need it. Avoid at all costs, unless you can cram like crazy and pull it off.
Awful teacher, doesnt answer questions and gets mad when you dont know what is going on. Very rude and has not been helpful. Do not take him.
Five question exams with hardly any partial credit. He is also not respectful towards students. He's an ok teacher, but a very tough grader. I would not recommend him.
5 question exams and he is a tough grader but even if you fail an exam or two you can still get an A. He cares about the students and will notice if you are putting in the effort.
Quizzes every class period, if you do the homework you will do good on quizzes. HW isnt graded or turned it. 2 exams and a final and hes a tough grader but very helpful if asked. Exams are difficult but makes all past exams available to you to study so helps a lot. Overall really good and nice professor.
He cares about what he teaches. Homework isn't graded but do it because quizzes are one of the homework questions. He allows you to ask questions each class from homework and tests, so choose 1 or 2 problems a day and ask. Sometimes we would ask the quiz question for that day and he would go over it anyways. Tests are hard so study old tests given
His teaching method is sometimes hard to follow but he posts all of his lecture notes and examples online which is helpful. Attendance doesn't matter and only grades you based on what quizzes/tests you are there for. He posts all of his old exams online. If you do relevant old exam problems and all of the homework you should do well on the exams.
Kustin knows what he is teaching but does not know how to teach it to others. Spends an abundance of class time going over useless proofs. Minor calculation errors often lead to no partial credit. Very rude and unprofessional with his students. Would not recommend to anyone.
He never entered grades. If you asked him about your grades, he would either be rude or respond with a bunch of random numbers with no context. He was rude to people who asked questions in class, and I literally never learned a single thing from the class. The only reason I got an A is because I looked up the material and studied before tests.
This teacher, for a lack of a better term, sucks. I've never had a teacher so awful. Would never go over any examples in class and head straight to proofs. Boring class. He was so bad that he made me switch my major. The only thing going for him is that he has a fun personality. Also doesn't believe in partial credit. Grades tests pretty hard.
Worst professor ever, very rude and unprofessional with student when they have any questions about his material.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I got a F in this class because he does not teach, constantly trips over himself (physically and mentally). I had life scholarship that is long gone. University messed me over too as I had to take orientation before I could register for classes. This orientation was 4 DAYS BEFORE CLASSES STARTED. Had no other choice.
Only teaches the basics of each topic, and expects you to learn it on your own. Gives quizzes once a week with one question, and gives very little partial credit. Gives feedback on quizzes, but is very rude about it if you did not understand the material.
weekly quizzes and grades everything vary harshly. zero partial credit. i completely understand the topic and messed up on one negative sign because quizzes are time limited and got a 0. messes up on many examples and instructions given are unclear. only way to pass the class is youtube or tutors.
terrible
lectures are extremely unclear, teaches only theory, if he does give an example he messes it up, left with more questions than answers, zero partial credit. studied over 15 hours for exam and he took off 60 points for not showing every single step of my work, i clearly had the basis written out, made a 34. dropping class right now.
He only teaches theory (because that's what he knows how to do) and doesn't answer questions if he doesn't know how to. He grades harshly and there's little to know partial credit. He's terrible. Just don't take him, I'm passing but I would not want to take him ever again.
Overall is a very difficult man to reason with. Gets sidetracked and lost in narration when lecturing so they are not even worth going to, just teach yourself the material or find a different professor. You don't want to see him throw erasers across the room when he gets lost teaching. Or mad at a student for asking a basic question.
Would not recommend this class because the professor is very rude to students, gives no partial credit for anything, really only teaches theory with very few examples, and gets lost while doing problems even though he is mainly copying down already worked out problems. If you do take this class, be prepared to learn it on your own.
I had him for M544 and M546 and he is the worst lecturer and rudest prof. The grade is determined by 8 hw quizzes and 4 tests. His 5-7 question tests are not reflected by what he teaches. DO EVERY OLD TEST FROM HIS PAST YEARS to prepare and then you have a fighting chance. He curves at the end, so don't panic if you fail a test.
Not a professor I would ever want to take again. Must be perfect on every answer on exams with no partial credit. I did poorly on an exam I thought I aced and when I received it, just because of a missed sign at the end of a problem led to missing all points on that problem. Went to office hours, I got no help and he was very rude to me.
Very nice guy.
Terrible Professor, MUST be perfect on every question on exams. No partial credit on questions, did not teach me anything. Bad lectures, bad everything. After one of his exams I went to his office hours to get help on understanding why I got the score that I did on my exam. He just was cussing at me and did not help me at all.
Genuinely unbelievable. This guy is 80 years old, can barely walk, hunches over the board and writes in a way that no students can see, while muttering to himself with no clear lesson plan, then forces a quiz on students EVERY CLASS, giving no more than 10 minutes. He offers no partial credit, no extra credit, and no clear way to pass.
This professor made last semester the worst 4.5 months of my life. Literally contemplated suicide because of him. He's old, miserable, and honestly, I doubt he wants anybody to pass. In fact, I feel like he's purposely trying to make student fail. He's practically gatekeeping this subject. He won't help at all during office hours. PICK ANOTHER PROF
242 is fun, but not with Kustin. Cannot follow lectures (pauses and gets corrected by students a lot), doesn't give the greatest feedback, can understand better through course notes (but even the course notes are hard to understand and leave out information), and the grading criteria makes no sense. Drop him and find another professor for 242.
ANDY teaches this class bc he can't teach
Dr. Kustin was very engaging and very lenient with his grading, helped me improve my score throughout the course.
I can understand why a lot of people don't care for him, he's a little old and constantly makes mistakes on the board during lessons. However, really is a great teacher, especially when you attend his office hours. He gives a quiz every Friday, but the question is identical to one of the homework questions from that week, so it really isn't hard.
