He is so passionate about teaching. Absolutely wonderful professor. Greatly recommend. If you study well, you should do well; easy as that. So refreshing to see young profs that care about making sure that students are learning.
Absolutely the best proffesor at Ryerson.Very helping, very kind.I recommend any person looking to study biology to take courses with him. PLUS, he knows his stuff VERY well.it'll amaze you
He knows his stuff very well...pretty amazing how much he knows...very passionate on what is he teaching...He puts a lot of effort and time into his work...who would spend few hours a day to just get to Ryerson and teach?
Excellent prof! Goes out of his way, to ENSURE that all students do as well as they can. Listens to students, and is in general a very clear, consise and wonderful teacher. Unbelievable how much of all disiplines in biology this man knows.
An Amazing prof. He really does go out of his way to make sure you understand. He will even schedule study secessions at non-office hours. He really knows what he's talking about. He makes sure he answers all questions. TAKE HIS COURSES n be lucky u hav him.
A truely brilliant teacher. Nowadays it's hard to find prof who care about undergrads. Dr. Laursen more than cares. He is passionate about biology and about teacher. All that you can ask for in a teacher. Thank you, Dr. Laursen for being wonderful!
Connects to students immediately! Fun, passionate, easy on the eyes; yep, Dr.Laursen is quite possibly the best teacher in the World (or at least at Ryerson :p)
EXCELLENT TEACHER!go to CLASS u will enjoy him very much.
i love Dr. Laursen - he's just the greatest & hottest prof that i've got so far!

poor lecture and explanation, not useful at all
hard exam poor teaching
He is a great teacher. Very understanding and extremely helpful. One of the good things about Mr. Laursen is that if he doesnt know an answer to a question he will just say he is not sure and he will do his research and then get back to you. He is probably one of the Prof in the university who actually take time to get to know the kids.
Very hard exams....I don't know y these profs complicates things..high level questions..but good teaching and extremely helpful prof.
i love this turkey hes so smart. he explains just the way the book does. im so amazed. like he knows the book inside out. second favourite professor. his tests are very hard though. but its understandble.
hard and complicated exam, poor lecture(when compare with concept of exam)
Honestly, if you actually READ the book before his lecture, and just listen to him expain it, you WILL understand the course material. I don't even study much for his test and I'm getting 90's all over. He doesn't complicate things and his lectures cover text material and more.
He's a nice professor..but his lectures are a bit boring...and exams are quite difficult.
Great Teacher. Knows the subject in great depth and loves to discuss it. I really learnt a lot Only caveat: Maybe too many activities and materials, online quizes, midterms, exams, written assignments, labs, lab-exams,lab-test,lab-evals, self-evals, peer reviews, etc, etc, etc. Course took up a lot of my time.
The nicest prof you'll ever meet. Extremely helpful and amazingly nice, can't say how great he is. Very knowledgable on the subject, and very smart. His tests are very very fair, and is a great lecturer. One of my favorite profs.
In one word best professor you can ever get. Unbelievably clear and respective.
Best prof so far. Dr.Laursen really knows about what he is teaching and he care about the students too. Just go to his lectures and then read the book u will almost everything. Nicest and best professor.
One of the best profs Ryerson has seen. Amazing lectures, very clear and concise and also very helpful. Takes time with students and fully explains the material. Although there is quite a lot to study the exams contain never more than what he teaches in class. Great personality, an honor to have as a teacher. If you study you will get a good mark.
Dr. Laursen made me fall in love with biology. He made my first year so interesting. Great lectures, answers any questions you have, very knowledgeable and nice man. After 1st year I got very disappointed with chem/bio program because no other prof was as good as him
Best Prof so far. His lectures are amazing. He's very passionate about the subjects. Exams are a bit tough, but if you study properly you'll do good on them.
Awesome! Best prof ever!
fantastic prof!!!i hated biology since high school, but this guy made me fall in love with it.spooky to me :D!!such a gentleman.respects each student and remembers most names in class(doesn't matter what kinda a name you have).exams are hard.he just doesn't want you to memorize.its mostly on how well you understand the material.thumbs up!!!
Fun and very smart.
Laursen Rules !
i am in 2nd year now and DAMN i miss Dr Laursen :(he is the best biology teacher around :)taking some biology courses BUT NO one can beat his teaching style!
Very good at teaching, very interesting course, it will prepare you well for other biology courses.
great guy!
he is the best bio teacher i have ever had he teaches bio in a right way that will help u so much in future but u gatta work and u will be happy with ur mark
He is one of the best professor I have ever had in my life. His teaching is just awesome!!!
nice prof...make sure you attend all his lectures...organized since he posts all his lectures online...come to the class prepared and learn your stuff and you will surely ace his class!
Smart, Helpful, polite, and a very good lecturer. One of the best profs at Ryerson. Definately take any course that this man is teaching.
THE BEST PROFESSOR ID THE WORLD ....VERY VERY HELPFUL. I WISH EVERYONE WAS AS GOOD AS HIM
Amazing prof. 1 of the best I've had. Very clear and has a real interest in what he teaches. Extremely knowledgable aswell. You got some nerds who ask unecessary questions (not out of general interest) to try an stump him, an make themselves appear smarter but there isn't any questions related to this subject that he can't answer. Very fair marker.
He is such a great prof. not very easy but actually makes you learn. you will get alot from him by taking the course. one of the greatest profs i've ever had..
He is such a great prof. not too easy but actually makes you learn. you will get alot from him by taking the course. one of the greatest profs i've ever had..Also, he spends so much energy in teaching 'very enthusiastic'it's worth taking a course with hem, extremely useful
First year BIOLOGY ( I AND II) I loved his class, his lectures are the best way to understand the material. he's very passionate about his work, hes very approachable, and dedicated to his office hours. as a biology major, he was my favorite biology professor, and im happy he was my first, it gave me great insight to a wonderful program LOVE HIM!!!
He is great! go to his lectures
AWESOME
cool guy
Honestly one of the best profs i have ever had. i am in third year now and had him in first year. i wish i was in first year so i could have him as a professor again. lucky first years. he made me love biology, but now thanks to other professors i hate it.
gr8 teacher..so clear lecture...seems like BBC news...gr8 proff..
Best Biology prof i ever had! he genuinely cares for his student and the course material he is teaching.
one of the greatest prof I've ever had.
Not only a nice guy, but an understanding one. He does come off as being hard, as are ALL the lab techs at ryerson (weing, mcwilliams), but he will win you over. if you need ANYTHING he will do his best to help you, even if its something very stupid, he ignores your stupidity and fills you with knowledge and makes you feel good inside!
fun and easy to under stand
Amazing prof. Too bad I got him during my last semester. If I knew him earlier I would've taken most of the classes that he taught. He's a very reasonable prof. Flexible and willing to adjust according to the students needs. Tests are based on what he taught in class. Textbook can help but can get A+ from lecture slides alone. Fair marker!
Best prof ever! He clearly loves teaching and put your cellphones away!! lol
awesome prof! VERY clear! explains the concepts very well! he tests you on the material from his lectures so make sure to make attention in class! dont even need the textbook! his midterms and exam r all application questions tho.
He is an incredible professor who goes above and beyond to teach the material and enhance learning. I was very pleased with his teaching skills and his knowledge of the material. I recommend attending his classes and not missing one because he teaches material that may not be in the text and that are more up-to-date. Excellent excellent professor
Will start out very hard. Really loves the material, you can tell by the way he lectures. Know how to connect concepts of evolution, advantages and disadvantages. Adds a lot in lecture, so attend. Overall nice guy, super smart and will challenge you. Make sure you are clear in your short answer responses, dont beat around the bush!
Does not give enough time for students to complete the midterm exam. He said the midterm will be one hour long and gave us 40 min to complete. I did well on the m/c & almost everyone taking his course failed the Short answer part of his midterm. Nice guy, but overall he snaked us.
Dr. Laursen is a good professor. He speaks very clearly, gives great examples, makes sure everyone understand the concepts and handles every question extremely well. The only downside would be that he stops his class whenever he sees a phone. It gets very annoying and happens about 2/3 times a lecture. Other than that only positive things to say.
LOVE HIM!!! He made me fall in love with the course .easy exams and overall he is just the best he is so passionate about the material makes u love it as well.i never fell asleep in his class .make sure u put those phones away though!! I wanna take another course with him .the best at Ryerson
Excellent Prof and a very approachable person in general.
No cellphones or earphones because he calls you out (which you shouldn't be doing in the first place)! Amazing prof. Really into what he is teaching and gives great explanations in class!
Hes an awesome prof! He really prioritizes our education and shows that in his lectures. Personally dont like Biology but he does a good job at explaining all about it. He is very passionate and clearly loves what he does. Wouldn't mind to have him again!
Great start to university, really interesting lectures, and although most of the information is already given on the lec notes, I went just to hear his explanations of the concepts and his passion for biology.
Andrew Laursen is a great prof. His midterms are a bit tricky and overall the exam was a little tough too. If you study really hard for the midterms and final you can do well.
Dr. Laursen is a great prof, really nice and explains well. However, the second midterm and exam was tough. Study well and you'll do well.
His lecture is pretty good - always give clear explanations. However, his exams are tough. How the questions are worded is confusing - be prepare for that. It is not hard to get an A- or A in the course - just need to read book. But if you expect an A+, you really need to push up a lot of work.
I'm a first year student and out of my first semester the had by far the best lectures. It's possible to get an A in his class if you really put in the work, his test though are fairly difficult imo.
His lectures are very entertaining and easy to follow. His midterm and exam however are fairly tough. He focuses more on application rather than memorization. He made lectures engaging and if you really like bio or not, you'll enjoy his class.
Nice and caring prof. However, he needs to consider the audience he is teaching. Evolution is taken by 3rd/4th year students. We don't need to 5 examples to understand dominant and recessive traits (something we learned in high school). Hence, I found the lectures boring.
Amazing prof!! Super passionate about evolution and gives easy assignments.
Final exam was extremely hard; everyone was clueless. He didnt even give a proper review for the exam which might be why most students struggled with the exam, especially the short answer questions
Do not listen to the comment below mine. I also wrote the exam and did not find it super challenging. The reason why many people struggled was because it was heavy application based. It wasn't 100% "List those 5 things you learned" or "Which option is the correct definition of X." If you can apply your knowledge to scenarios, then you can get an A.
The exam was a mess. Everyone was clueless as he didnt tell us what to focus on and to make it worse, all the concepts were application based which led many students to be unsuccessful.
So many people complaining about how difficult the exam was. What do you expect? University is a tough job, and you don't need meticulous notes to pass. I personally read every page in the textbook that was needed for the exam and I can assure you that if they've done just that, they wouldn't be complaining. Read the textbook and you'll do well.
Laursen is a good professor. He has pretty detailed notes on his slides but for exams he is really general on what he wants you to focus on. Biology in general is very heavy because it has alot of information to know but alot can be understood from his lectures. His exams was pretty difficult but doesnt mean hes a bad prof
He's the type of prof you'll remember after you graduate. He genuinely wants his students to do well and is extremely understanding. He doesn't want to know you can memorize the material, he wants you to actually apply it, so his tests aren't what most students are used to. Use the text and his notes to study the material and you'll do well.
I was fortunate to have Dr. Laursen as my first Biology-related professor. I liked that he definitely knew what he was teaching while being articulate at the same time. Props to him by making our labs quite enjoyable during remote learning. The course was well-organized. Hope to have him again!
Laursen is a good prof. His quizzes and tests were very straightforward and similar to the way the info in the lectures was given. His lectures aren't anything special; he usually just read off the slides, going into detail only every now and then. Clear grading criteria for sure. Nice guy too.
Really enjoyed having Professor Laursen for a part of BLG143. He is very understanding and is always willing to answer your questions. He was very helpful and was always willing to re-explain concepts for you during his office hours or class. He is very approachable and given it was an online course, his pre-recorded lectures were very well done!
I had three professors for this course and I felt like Dr. Laursen was the best one out of all three. He explained the materials very clearly without beating around the bush and going off topic, but still manages to make the class not boring. He does not take too long to respond to emails and is very friendly in general.
Solid professor. His lectures were clear and his exam was fair. The most caring of the three professors of this course. Answers all questions posed by students quickly.
Honestly the best prof teaching this course. So kind, caring and patient with his students. I loved having him honestly and I'm so sad he isn't teaching blg 144 this semester.
Amazing professor nothing bad to say, he explains everything thoroughly and his lectures are fast and get to the point quick. He probably gets a lot of emails throughout the day that's why he replies slow but other then than nothing bad to say
Professor Laursen made the course 10x easier. His lectures are really easy to follow and he explains the concepts really well.
Just an A+ human being. Fun project if your group is good. Some completion marks. Labs had extremely detailed instructions.
Excellent professor and wish we had more of him in the course. His teaching was the only effective and well organized from all the profs in this course. His explanations were the most clear because he seemed to clearly know his stuff. This is what it means a prof can make or break your grade. When you have excellent profs like this, you will learn.
35+ profs later, this is one of the best professors I've ever had. Caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, amazing lecturer. Just an overall decent human being.
Dr. Laursen is very enthusiastic and passionate about the material taught in class making it easy for me to find it interesting. Although the lectures are very fast-paced and sometimes confusing, they are recorded which gives me the opportunity to catch up. His quizzes are quite difficult but fair. I would be glad to take a class of his again.
A great professor but his quizzes are extremely difficult. They're application based and he formats the quiz in a tricky way which ensures you can never get 100. His midterms are easier than the quizzes although he refers to quizzes a lot. Use past exams to test yourself and study for exams and quizzes.
An amazing prof! Super kind and willing to answer any questions. Tests are more application based with a mixture of short answer and MCQ. No surprises though
This professor is amazing - caring, knowledgeable, and really wants students to succeed. The tests focus on application, not just memorization. Definitely use Unstuckstudy along with the textbook to prepare.
