The study guides are long, but he grades very easily.
His lectures are very interesting. He actually teaches!! His exams are somewhat hard, but if you do the study guide and attends class, you're in good shape.
Superb professor, really interesting lectures. Not that easy though.
1 exam, 1 final, 1 BIG paper (turned in as 3 parts throughout semester). Clear, interesting lectures. Passionate about topic. Exams based mostly on lectures, not the book. Read online material (he got pretty mad when 2 students raised their hands)! Opportunity to revise/return major paper.
Same as below plus... Easy, easy tests! I didn't read any material until night before test and scored 104% on midterm! Extremely accomodating. Least fav part of course is lectures - extermely dry, boring, and drowsy.
HE IS A FUNNY GUY BUT THE CLASS OVER ALL JUSS DRAGGED AFTER THE FIRST HR (FRIDAY CLASS 11-1:45) HIS ESSAY IS NOT EXACTLY EASY TO DO. THE TEST IS FAIR THOUGH IF YOU STUDY
Not the best teacher I have had, is not open to comments outside the box, a bit of ego, and admits to being a soc psy geek. His exams are fair, but he needs improvement on his boring lectures. If you study you will do well if you can get past the dry humor. Good luck if you know what I mean.
He's a cool prof, but I was lost as to what to take notes on. It's like trying to take notes on a conversation sometimes, because it's an open discussion type of format, which is great for just wanting to learn, but kind of scattered. Still a good professor, would recommend him, very helpful, always in office hours, totally cool.
Very interesting class! You have to do 10/13 essays which he grades fair and as long as you read the reserve readings, go to most of the lecture, and read some of the book, then you'll be fine.
THIS PROFESSOR IS ONE OF THE BEST PROFO I HAVE EVER MET! HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT UNLIKE MANY OTHER PROFOS. HE MAKES THE CLASS INTERESTING WITH CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES. JUST ONE WORD LEFT TO SAY. "AWESOME"
he is a good teacher, know what he is teaching..smart one too..1 long paper, one page paper every week...fair grader...i would recommend to everyone...
I learned a lot from this class! IT was very interesting. No need to take notes cuz they won't help on the test. Study from the study guides and skim through the book! There was one paper to write that helped me learn a bit!
professor Lohmann made this class interestin and comfortable for students to speak in class because it feels like he levels his standards to ours and tries view things as we do. lectures are clear & if you take notes, they are VERY helpful to your study guide. he's always in his office and is willing to explain anything u dont understand.thumbs up
An excellent professor!! He helps you out whenever U need it! I will highly recommend him! He does make you work, but it pays off with his reasonable grading!
Very smart and helpful professor! His class is "work" but it pays off! He's very reasonable, and understands his students! Very nice person to talk to during office hours!
He makes the clas fun. I love his class when we do group works. The only thing that suck is the 12-14 page issue analysis paper.
Class was mediocre. The stuff that Lohmann showed us that wasn’t part of the curriculum was most interesting. I’m betting that this is one of the better Critical Thinking courses, so take it for your G.E. I just wished that he switched up the groups throughout the semester, all the other students in my group were unimaginative and a little slow.
This guy knows his stuff. The issue analysis paper is not hard at all, everything is turned in, in pieces. He then collects the whole thing at the end of the semester. The tests is not hard either. He makes you think!!! He's very helpful and is always available during office hours. He's also very funny. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Fun class. Good teacher.
I really enjoyed this class. Highly recommended!
Heavy Socratic method, so make sure you do the reading before class-- you will be doing half of the talking. Also, you better like reading, writing, and speaking up, because the class demands a lot. And, be forewarned, he enjoys administering tricky critical thinking tests in class-- the answer is rarely what you think it should be, but it is fun.
Fun teacher, he can really get into what hes teaching and is very expressive. He challenges you a lot to think about things in different ways and does a great job of presenting multiple sides of a subject. Very discussion oriented. Gave a lot of information in a subject that doesn't have all that much to go over.
Very easy class. His test is easy if you read and study for it. But the analysis paper is somewhat easy. You just need to put effort into it and write a good paper.
Honestly he seems like a hard teacher, but with a little effort you'll go very far in this class. His views on life and the world makes sense and I really admire him. He's a cool person and I recommend his class.
He's a good teacher for PSY 130. Others who took this course didn't like it, but Lohmann's is easy: a midterm, a final, and an analysis paper that you work on throughout the semester. Nothing really to the class but the paper, but you work on it the whole time. The tests are okay, just understand the material. If taking this course, take him! :)
this was a great class. i was intimidated at first, but he is funny and keeps it interesting. some of the stuff he teaches will amaze you! he is extremely helpful during office hours as well. definitely take this class if you are filling a ge requirement! one of my favorite professors!
Seriously he is by far one of the best teachers i have ever had! his lectures are so interesting and never boring, you can really relate to almost everything he lectures on. His tests are kinda hard you just have to study for them. This class is def worth taking!!! amazing teacher!!
Great prof! Exams are hard, but really challenges you to think! Don't take this capstone class if you hate reading/writing. Just read the books, analyze the articles, and make sure you attend class for those surprise group work! His chosen material's interesting as well as it applies to the real world.
He has a good personality and the topic is interesting. However, he grades really hard. Too much work for a capstone in my opinion. (4) 3pg critical analysis papers, (1) 10 pg research paper. (2) test. I just dropped the class.
Professor Lohmann keeps his lectures interesting and funny at the same time!
this guy knows so much!!! my utmost favorite class. 1 midterm, 1 final. 10 idea papers (SUPER easy, one page long each week). exams weren't hard as long as you knew the material... so know it. this class is definately worth taking :)
GREAT PROF. GREAT CLASS. my most favorite. you need to know the materical for the exams. 1 research paper and ten 1 paged idea papers (super easy). i highly recommend. :)
awesome class!! I learned so much from his class, that I actually use it in real life. Makes you think about the way you see things. Need to pay attention in class and read the books. He makes the class really fun and interesting.
He's cool and his homework is almost always easy. He has a midterm and a final. But that semester long paper is a drag. It's all you have to think about the whole semester. that's really the part that kills it, other than that its well.
He was an amazing teacher for evolutionary psych. he assigns several essays, but it's worth it. I never wanted to miss a lecture. He's enthusiastic and knowledgeable, he shows relevant and interesting films, he's eager to help. Tests are slightly difficult but easy if you attend class and read the chapters. TAKE HIM!!!!
PSY 130 - I loved this class.. Professor Lohmann is the****!this class is pretty easy to get an A in, just write a good paper and study what he puts on the study guide. His lectures are funny but also interesting, and makes you think in a different, but more ligament way.
Took him for community psychology. Great professor, but in a 3 hour class, he gave no breaks. Subject of community psychology is an opinion more than an actually study subject. so I say avoid this class at all costs. If you must take it, Lohman makes it a lot less painful. Quiz on book chapters every class, test off study guides, 1 project. All easy
veerrrrrryyyyy helpful. great in teaching statistics. simple assignments almost every week and an exam every few weeks but in general, if u attend class and take decent notes you shouldnt have a problem!
extremely helpful and extremely smart, however this class is not easy. his tests are impossible if you did not study. simple lab assignments, but they are on the spss program which is not too easy to access. good professor, but if you don't have a lot of free time on your hands, i would not suggest taking lohmann.
ehhhhhhh
He is confusing and unclear during lecture and has evident flaws in his own thinking....yet he is teaching a "critical thinking" class.......Found this teacher to be pretentious and idiotic
Super awesome teacher! Makes class something to look forward to. He really got me interested in evolutionary psychology. stand up guy, knowledgible, enthusiastic, inspiring. MUST TAKE!
He's a very fun interactive teacher! PSY 210 is a statistics class so you must study regardless of the professor. I found him to be clear in terms of what his expectations were. He even provided us with study guides for the exams. He is very lenient and even altered the grading scale to help some of us! Overall, a great professor! :)
hes so entertaining! very intriguing dood.his paper is kind of hard, but he allows a lot of time and you do it in sections. study whats on the study guide and youll be good. i never cracked open the book.
I did well in this class, so I'm not posting because I'm bitter. This guy loves to hear himself speak and will pace and rant and rave about stuff that has nothing to do with the course stuff. Keeps us til the last minute, which sux if you have another class across campus. Didn't learn a damn thing except for how big his ego is. Good luck!
He is very interested in the subject and is very helpful outside of the classroom. I do not recomend him because he makes it very difficult to achieve an A. After the first midterm, he said that no one had ever recieved an A on it. The research paper is semester long, but if you manage your time and go to him for help you will pass.
He's a great professor,10pg paper due at the end of semester, 1 midterm (mc &sa) pretty tough, but he's extremely helpful! You'll learn. Attend class because the test are based on the lectures.
I'm a bit intimidated by him but he's interesting. Midterm was kind of hard because we didn't really know what to expect. Homework assignments were alright, sometimes tedious. Have to write one analysis paper which took up the sem.I feel like he wasn't all that helpful in his lectures. He doesn't take roll, but you should take notes in his classes.
Interesting class. The book was supplemental, so if you're in a financial pinch, don't worry about it. Easy to pass. Just listen to the lectures and the rest follows.
Smart guy. He is great at explaining concepts through examples. However, he lets his personal opinions into the classroom all the time. But he's a cool guy and the class isn't too tough. Be sure to show up to lectures and take notes. The idea papers are every week, but they're only a page long. Easy B, or work moderately hard for an A.
Very interesting class. He is very easy to talk to. Always helpful during office hours and responded to emails promptly. Consists of a midterm and a final (take notes because they will be helpful) as well as a 9-12 pg paper. Homework assignments are credit/ no credit. If you are willing to work and are diligent than you will be fine.
He is passionate about psychology, especially his area of expertise: social psychology. I've learned more than I thought I could learn about the subject and now view the world as a social psychologist. He gets your mind thinking and loves questions and feedback. Extremely helpful, especially during office hours. Highly recommend him.
Great class. Very challenging class and definitely difficult, but I liked this class because it was super interesting. Also, it's entertaining because the professor sometimes gets a bit too carried away in his lecture. Overall this is a wonderful professor.
Interesting but pretty hard. 3 3pg papers, 1 10pg project, 3 exams (MC/essay ?s), online quizzes, some participation, a lot of reading. He is very helpful if you go to his office hrs, but grades essays hard. Study guides arent true to exams. More like a political science/current events class than psychology. Dont take it if you just need a capstone
He is very best professor I've had so far at CSULB...and I've had a alot. Gives weekly, 5 question quizzes on reading material and surprise in-class participation assignments but if you show up and do the reading, you will be fine. Also, requires 20 hr. comm serv. hrs. & gives study guides for midterm/final. Overall great professor!!!
Soc Psyc is a super interesting class.. seriously, you're gonna learn a lot. I'm not a psych major so I was pretty blown away by the stuff we talk about. 10 page final paper, 2 exams, weekly idea/reaction paper to whatever relevant topics, the readings aren't bad at all. BUT the exams are a bit challenging cuz he's also a critical thinking teacher
Really, really great professor. His passion for what he teaches is contagious. Textbook is enjoyable to read. Lectures are interesting and well-structured. I highly recommend Professor Lohmann. He is one of the professors I will remember well for the rest of my life.
Interesting course, learned a lot. Heavy reading and a lot of writing, but worth it because you learn so much. Lohmann is a very funny guy, his lectures are great. Not the easiest class, but interesting and fun.
Professor Lohmann is a wonderful professor. He is very passionate about what he does and it is apparent when he teaches. His lectures are very interesting and fun. He really focuses on LEARNING the big picture, not just memorizing what he's feeding students. It wasn't the easiest class I've taken, but it was definitely one I will remember.
I gotta say, this is the first time that I'm going to rate a professor. Dr. Lohman is indeed a professor worthy of rating. I really enjoyed the topics, he presented in class. I learned a lot & his personality makes you stay up through the entire 45m of class. If you take his class, you won't regret it.
He's a fantastic professor. Every lecture is enthralling. Exams pull from lecture and readings, so it's important to know both well. Definitely my favorite class.
Class is not mandatory but his lectures and readings are! He also grades you on group participation. 4 analysis papers, he drops the lowest grade! 3 exams, and he drops the lowest grade! The readings are necessary because they're on the exam. He offers a Review Guide on BB and his lectures are amazing!
Great class! Prof. Lohmann give lots of insights. Very deep and intelligent prof. Two exams consisting of multiple choices and short essays and a few quizzes, 20 hours community service. Not an easy class but doable, 89% is an A. Recommend him for community psy and contemporary social issue course.
Professor Lohmann is one of the MOST interesting professors you will ever meet. He is extremely down to earth and you can really have an enticing conversation with him. The class is not very hard nor is it easy, but rest assure that you will enjoy the class. It does require you to at least skim the readings and the topic is VERY interesting. :D
Community Psychology did not really interest me until I took this course. Professor Lohmann makes the topic very relevant to student's lives. He is very helpful, funny, understanding and intelligent! Do not feel intimidated and ask Qs. He is very easy going & if you put in the work you will get that A. Going to miss this Professor. Def. take him :)
One of the most enthusiastic, entertaining, humorous, and intelligent professors you will ever come across. This is by far my favorite class at CSULB! 2 tests (midterm & final), online quizzes and idea papers due once a week. Work isn't that tough. I highly recommend this class!
Professor Lohmann is extremely knowledgeable about his subject. He is funny and you definitely come out of his class with new gained understanding of yourself and people around you. The readings are interesting and worthwhile. Weekly idea papers, a midterm, a final and participation points for discussions. This class has been deeply life changing!
weekly quizzes&idea papers,1 midterm/final, participation points. read the course materials he assigns for the quizzes! for the exams, you can't pass by just memorizing! really understand the material he goes over class and the terms, etc. if you do all of those, you'll def pass :) he makes the class interesting and fun, def recommend him!
He clearly has a passion for teaching, text is used but you can get by without it. Attend class if you don't read!! Reading is beneficial Weekly idea papers/quizzes keep up with them he does drop lowest two scores so you can skip if necessary. 1 Midterm 1 final overall interesting class great discussions and topics!!
Did not use the textbook, all teachings were based off of powerpoints. Although there is no homework or quizzes, the test's are difficult and confusing (be prepared to get no help).
Absolutely MUST GO TO CLASS. The textbook helped but not really, it was all based on the power points and lectures. If you go to class it will be easy it is a hard subject and he can be hard to fully understand but he will try until you do. good teacher
He is a great teacher just make sure you go to class and ASK QUESTIONS. You can work together on tests as long as you turn in your own copy, he cares more that you understand how to perform the tests then getting the exact right answer. Ask questions & go to class and you can get an A for sure
His test are hard! But you actually learn in his course. He makes the course interesting for you. He might be very opinionated, but he at least gives you the other side of the opinion too.
If you want to learn take Dr Lohman. He gets his students to use their critical thinking skills and you will have to memorize the work to get an A in the course
Dont use textbook. Class isnt hard but you just have to make sure you attend class. Cant afford to miss class. The subject itself is hard to grasp, so just try your best and attend office hours.
He always tries to help whatever he can. The more i learn the materials, the more i notice what errors i usually make when it comes to decision making. It is valuable for our own goods. I have never seen a good teacher like this. He is so smart and nice person to talk to. He is an exception to this school because the rest are below standard.
Extremely disorganized professor, does not give any powerpoints and only verbal lectures so be prepared to write like crazy... exam study guide is all over the place and much of the material in the guide we never reviewed in class, nor were they ever in the assigned readings but he expects you to somehow know it.. need to work like crazy to keep up
I feel I understand the world and others in a more complex manner since I have taken Lohmann's Community Psychology class last semester. He lectures passionately and will challenge your beliefs and what you think you know to be true: which is a good thing! It is refreshing to take a class that truly expands your mind and decreases your ignorance.
I enjoyed the lectures in this class, the lectures are current . He has passion for his class. A lot of reading, and the test only comes from the lectures. Response papers are a good way to earn points.
Great professor, difficult class. Only two exams but most of the content isn't in the textbook. Because of this one has to write down everything in hopes that information won't be missed for the tests. The quizzes are also difficult and involve not just reading, but making sure you really memorize the info.
its true he is extremely disorganized, lots of times his exams will have stuff that he never talks about and isnt even the textbook!! very frustrating to keep up you have to google a lot of information. he also does not tell you a lot of things and you have to email him to find out whats going on. overall definitely disorganized, take another prof.
Instead of assigning idea paper that killed my brain once a week, he is a VERY GOOD teacher because he is so passionate to see his students to do well at school and even other aspects in life. You probably cannot find any other professors like him. I found him very inspiring , brilliant, talkative and funny. MUST Take him !!!
Into his lectures, he has passion for teaching. The class is enjoyable and a little fun. Test is graded a bit harsh. The essay portion of the test especially. Asides from that, worth taking.
He lectures lectures without powerpoint, so you need to attend class to understand concepts. He's not impossibly difficult, you just need to keep up with the reading and study prior to the two tests. There are also many easy ways to earn points throughout the class, tests only make up 45%. He's also fun and passionate. I'd def recommend him.
Lohmann seems like a great person and can be funny at times. I find myself falling asleep in every one of his lectures. I never read any of the books but I should have. His lectures are disorganized and there are weekly papers due and weekly quizzes online. His tests are tough and are harshly graded.
Loved his class. He is very passionate about what he's teaching and enthusiastic. Don't miss a class or you will miss a lot. Quizzes are easy IF you do the reading. Opened my mind and changed how I look at the world around me. I've probably learned the most from his class than any other class I've taken ,it's relateable and applicable to real life
He is a fun teacher, really gets into his lectures. For his tests, you really have to attend the lectures, not many is from the book. He is a conceptual teacher & has mostly essay questions on tests. He enjoys his job & stands for what he thinks is right, but sometimes it comes off a bit cocky... Likes you to prove him wrong but will not let you :
He is a super passionate professor and makes class very enjoyable! It definitely opens your mind to many things, it's incredible. Do all the readings and try to understand the concepts and you will be fine. If anything go to his office hours and he is glad to help you understand. But TAKE HIM!! He's great! Social psych is also a great subject.
Professor Lohmann is a great professor. He makes you think and challenges your ability to critically think. He's not an easy professor, but if you do your part you will learn a lot. Exams are tough. I would take him again.
I loved Professor Lohmann's class. His lectures were very lively and he was passionate about the material. The tests can be a bit tough but if you go to class and study you will be fine. 1 paged paper due about every week and a weekly 3 question online quiz. One midterm and one final. I recommend this class and would take from him again!
Lohmann is pretty chill. He's passionate and it resonates in his lectures. He's what I expected from a college professor. The material you learn can be applied to life in general and it's nice to have a professor that can make you think critically. It was a pleasure being in his class! Very challenging!
He is by far one of the best professor i have had. He is hilarious an applies concepts so well with real life situations outside of the classroom. You will learn, but in order to pass you have to put some effort! His test are hard, only 2 (mid-term & final) so prepare to study for them. Take notes and must ATTEND LECTURE !!
I loved having Lohmann as a professor! His lectures have been by far my favorite to attend. He's so passionate and really seems to love teachingeducation. I walked out of every lecture feeling like I learned more than just terms and definitions. Midterm and final both have mult choice and essay portions, 9 one pg papers, 10 online quizzes.
Lectures were very entertaining and interesting. He's clearly very passionate and knowledgeable on the class subject. It makes class more lively and a lot the topic can be applied to real life. This class made me think more critically about the world and the system we live in. The community service was also very fulfilling. Glad I took his class :)
Tough professor, although he is passionate about the subject he can get quite boring, Also does not have a outline or powerpoint to follow so hard to keep on. attendance is not mandatory but you will miss out on a lot if you don't go. I do not recommend taking if you do not like to read and if you are someone who likes learning from powerpoints
Over all hard class, however professor Lohmann is helpful and straightforward. at the end of the semester, you will understand the world :)) Just study hard, do ALL your work and you will get an A! Easy open book online quizzes, idea paper every other week, discussion participation, midterm and exam. You will be provided with a study guide.
Lohmann makes this class so entertaining and time flies in this class. Final is easier than the midterm but both were straight from lectures in class. If you are interested in psychology take a class from him, it will be worth it and life lessons will be learned
Great lecturer! I would definitely take him again. Those who say his exams were difficult probably didn't attend class very much. His tests and requirements for the class were reasonable. It's really not a hard class, you just have to be a student and actually do the work. Very insightful professor and I learned a great deal in this course!
LOVE Lohmann. So much that I switched up my fall schedule so I could take a class with him again. He teaches from a systemic perspective which was great and aligned well with WGSS classes. He is very funny and the grade was mostly based on online discussion participation, 7 one page idea papers, and midterm and final. Grad students grade though...
This is the 2nd class I have taken with Lohmann and I wish he taught more so that I could keep taking his classes. He opens your eyes and changes your perspective on so many things. 1 midterm, weekly reading quizzes, 20 hours of community service or a 16-20 paged paper. Strongly recommend students to take him!
Professor Lohmann is a teacher you have to get use to. He doesn't teach from a power point he speaks off his own discussion and what he feels. He is a very smart individual you can learn a lot from his class. His class workload is not bad, but you will read a lot. quiz every week, 4 media scans, and 3 test. If you need power point do not take class
He really focuses on the big conceptual picture when it comes to stats. There are weekly assignments and labs, but they're not too difficult if you pay attention in class. It helps to be interactive and answer all the questions he asks during lecture so you can remember it more easily.
Lohmann is one of my favorite professors at long beach so far. He's really organized, consistent, and passionate. Make sure you show up and take really good notes because he forms his exams and writing assignments around lecture. Its very important to understand conceptual things. The book was important for the quizzes but not for the exams.
Lohmann is very passionate about community psychology. 10 quizzes based on the book chapters. 5 questions each but after taking the quiz, you take it again in a group and turn in one paper and he takes the average of your 2 scores.. There is a midterm and a final. There is also a minimum of 20hrs of community service required to pass the course.
Great professor with extremely engaging and informative lectures, covers many different perspectives and topics with depth. The tests aren't difficult if you simply attend lecture and take notes, and the light homework (quizzes and weekly 1-page assignments) is easy enough to do and really helps conceptualize the topics and contribute to learning.
Great lectures. Ask questions. Pay attention in class. Keep up with the weekly Idea Papers. Easy work.
Undoubtedly one of the best psychology professors on campus. Very interesting lectures, keeps your attention so you're not bored. He explains terms with examples so it's easy to remember. Attendance is mandatory, no use of powerpoints. Material is based on what he lectures on VERBALLY in class.
one of the best teachers that I've taken. very knowledgeable of this subjects. will answer any questions. 20hrs community service project. easy to do over the semester. can opt out and write a really long paper. weekly quizzes based on readings. 1 midterm 1 final with study guide. passionate about this lessons. promotes class discussion.
The class is extremely good!! I highly recommend it. Social psych under soc and psych department is the same. His lectures are amazing and relevant.
Some of the readings are long with some additional online material but it really helps when he lectures. He gets really into his lectures and relates them to the real world. Doesn't review for exams in class, study guide vague so you HAVE to make sure you know the material and information to do well on the exam.
Lohmann is one of the best professors in the department and though he does not teach many classes, he does an exceptional for what he does. He makes you think and his test and quizzes are not impossible just read prior to class and you will do fine. Allows you to challenge and question him but will respect your opinion especially for having one
Best Psych professor I've ever had, his lectures are awesome, there's no way to get bored. He gives quizzes about interesting readings and assigns short reaction papers. His exams are pretty much about the lectures, so I don't recommend to skip more than 2 classes. I definitely recommend this class.
Best psychology professor I have had during my undergraduate career. There are no powerpoints (besides pictures given for clarity), but his lectures are so intriguing just listening and note taking will help you succeed. Read the articles, do your homework, and always ask questions.
Lohmann has been my favorite professor at CSULB. I've taken him for 351 and 375, and he has such a passion for teaching. He does an amazing job at keeping students interested. The lectures are all verbal, but somehow it works. I wish I could take his courses for the rest of my college career.
Lohmann is the best professor I've had at CSULB. His lectures are very interesting and will defiantly give you a different perspective on life at the end of the semester. He gives examples for each topic and they are incredible! Take notes for exams. Work on the study guides with classmates, it helps. I would def take him again.
Dr. Lohmann is easily one of the best professors I've ever had at CSULB. You can tell he's really passionate about what he does, and he knows how to explain concepts and ideas in a memorable way. Tests are difficult because he wants you to legitimately understand the material, not just memorize it. Still, his lectures are engaging and inspiring.
Absolutely hysterical during his lectures/ helpful NO PPTs/ slides for us to print out so taking notes in class and listening to what he had to say was absolutely key. Used the books he told the class to get. Quizzes were based on those and fairly simple (had 3 tries to get 100%) Tests (Midterm/ Final) were pretty difficult Papers throughout
Great professor! Has two tests, midterm and final! has quizzes based off reading from book, idea papers based off reading or lectures. He makes you think about concepts in ways that you could not imagine. Very smart and it makes you want to come to class to hear him. Very precise with his assignments but it benefits you for him to be that way.
Lohmann, a real smart individual. He will really throw incredible mind provoking facts; facts that were right in front of your face the entire time but you just needed to take a class of his to actually recognize them. His exams are hard, a little ambiguous. read the readings . 1 midterm. 1 final. 10 short fun one pagers. take him.
he is a very fact-based lecturer. he rarely states his opinion and lets you form your own. the assignments are not easy and there is a lot of reading.
Felt like a number in his class rather than a student. He never had a written form of the lecture it was all oral and it made it hard to get notes down. Group projects were great just hated how I felt rushed to leave his office when I went to see him.
Great professor. Understood his students and knew the struggle of being a college student. He lectures every class, although attendance is not mandatory, you might want to go to class to pass. Midterm was kind of difficult, but overall the class was fun, intriguing and challenging.
There are short idea papers due each week but they are only a page so they take less than 10 min to do. He is a very lecture heavy professor so attendance is mandatory but he makes it worth your time. He is a very good professor who is passionate about his work, I would definitely take him again. Test are only hard if you don't study for them.
2 Tests, 10 (1pg) idea/reaction papers and 10 online short quizzes (do readings and they should be simple & get a few tries) drops the 2 lowest scores for both the papers & quizzes. i looked forward to his class bc he made concepts interesting & eye opening. gotta work for that A though. go to his office hours for help. would take again! take him!
Had interesting lectures most of the time, did not use the book at all. He says there are certain concepts on the midterm only in the book but you can google search them. Graded off a few assignments and an essay about 10 pages that you complete throughout the semester. Helps you really see things in a new perspective
His class was by far my favorite. Professor Lohman is extremely knowledgeable & genuinely tries to make the material as relateable & understandable. You definitely need to be in class to pass, because his exams are primarily lecture based and only a small portion is multiple choice. Don't really need the book, easy quizzes, & have 8 1pg idea papers
I can't ever tell if he's crazy or if he's a genius. He is one of the most enlightening and inspiring lecturers I've taken. He definitely requires that you not only learn the material, but understand it enough to show what you know to others and incorporate that knowledge into every day life. I would definitely encourage his class.
I thought I would enjoy this class given the ratings. He gives quizzes based on the readings which sounds easier than it is given the questions are so random. I've read for each quiz and still failed each one. His exams are also hard since he wants very specific things, very picky. Nice man but would not recommend.
Professor Lohmann is not only the best professor I've ever had, but one of the brighest people I've met. Your mind will expand. You'll think from different perspectives. You'll want to show up to class, his lectures are always full of students. I've taken his social psych and community psych. I wish he taught more classes. Take him!
He woke af. Most inspiring professor I've had. His lectures still sometimes echo in my mind when a situation happens in real life, kind of eerie. If you've had him for social psy, that'll help you if you take him for community psy. You'll see the parallels from his lectures if you do the service learning. Wish he taught more psy courses!
I took Professor Lohmanns Social Psych Class and it was so inspiring! His lectures really open topics up and allow for open class input and discussion. The best advice I have for taking his classes is READ THE MATERIAL BEFORE CLASS! That way you will know what he is talking about, you can join discussion, and clear up any questions you may have.
This class is a suitable choice if you desire to learn by lecture. To get that A though, definitely reference the textbook in order to fully understand terms you didn't catch in class. Be prepared for weekly quizzes, online discussions, and a weekly paper. Only two major tests the entire semester. He's always available for office hours for more Qs.
Great professor and great sense of humor. He will discuss many touchy subjects but that is his job, don't take any offense to what he says. Grades 8 of 10 1 page papers based on any topic discussed in class, 9 of 11 quizzes based off reading, easy discussion board participation, and two exams. The exams are lecture heavy so always take notes!
WOW! He is just the BEST prof. ever!!Class is not easy, but you will learn SOOO much from him. 10 one page papers (drops 2 lowest grades), 9 online quizzes (3 tries, 2 hrs per qz, drops 2 lowest grades), midterm and final consist of 20 multiple choice ?'s (20pts each), and the rest of the 80pts is all written. Take NOTES! This was my favorite class
Lohmann is one hell-of-a-man. 1 midterm, 1 final and idea/reaction papers due almost each week + engaging in online discussions. He is very narrow minded and thinks he is right all the time. He grades tough on the idea papers which doesn't make sense because it is my own idea and reaction to the course material. If you can avoid him, do it.
love professor lohmann! His lectures were one of the best I've taken so far. Have to do weekly papers, but they only have to be 1 pg long. Weekly quizzes as well so you have to read the corresponding readings. Tests actually test you if you know the concepts and how they tie together, so you must go to the lectures to do decent. overall recommend!
If you are willing to do attend all classes then you'll do fine but otherwise you will struggle. Everything is based off his lectures and don't really need the book even if he says you do. I didn't like alot of the papers we had to turn in weekly because he would grade them rigoursly.
Lohman was very passionate about the subject but the weekly quizzes could mess you up.
HIs lectures are all face to face, no PP. Make sure to do the weekly discussions, reaction papers and quizzes, those are easy points to forget. There are only two exams, the mid-term and the final. The class is pretty chill and gets more interesting if you participate. I was a few points from a B but its those easy points that I missed out on.
He is very passionate about the course he teaches. To me, he was an average professor, but I also believe that if I had taken Soc. Psy. with another professor, it would have been very boring. Overall, I do recommend to take him.
He is a really good professor. he knows his stuff and lecture was honestly interesting. have to actually try to get an A. his test are mostly free response, but will help you along the way. 10 idea papers (1 pg length) and 11 quizzes (4 questions have 3 tries) drops two lowest grades.
11 super short online quizzes (drops two lowest grades), 10 one-paged idea papers (drops two), 1 midterm, 1 final, participation grades based on discussion boards. The exams are the hardest part of this class. Lohmann is so inspirational. I disagree with some of his views but he is just such a good speaker; very interesting lectures.
This guy is so smart. I came out of every lecture shook because of the class material. If you want to learn how messed up the world is, this is the class for you. 4 3-page papers. 4 exams. No presentations. Readings are really good. Hardly any class assignments. Some reading quizzes (2 questions lol). One of my favorite professors at long beach.
such an amazing professor! Every lecture was interesting & fun bc of how he taught it. TAKE GOOD NOTES, A Paper usually due every week but super easy to do & short. super short Quizzes too based on the book. Reading isn't really mandatory but recommend if u wanna do great in the class & bc they are interesting. ALSO STUDY FOR THE MIDTERM and FINAL
This man is my favorite professor in Long Beach. His lectures are great and you don't want to miss any of it. He doesn't take attendance, but attendance matters when a huge portion of his lectures are on the exams. There are weekly reading assignments, one-page papers (these are fairly difficult), quizzes, discussion posts, one midterm, one final.
One of the best professors I have ever had. You need to attend lectures to pass, but they are always interesting. He makes them easy to understand. One midterm and final. 8 one page papers which are easy if you understand what he is looking for, readings, and discussion post and replies
He is a really good lecturer. If you skip class, you would not pass. He does not use PowerPoint but it's actually a good things because many professors just read off the PowerPoint. You will have idea papers based on whatever you want to write regarding social psy. One midterm and final, very hard so study. Online quiz very easy based on readings.
I entrusted on taking Lohmann's class based off the optimistic reviews I had read on here, unfortunately I found the teaching style to be very condescending. Don't bother participating you will only be embarrassed by his pompous remarks. The course material is mundane and he is unapproachable when regarding questions..."It's in the syllabus!! ".
Just because he teaches on biases and its impact through sexism and racism it has on a community/individual, does not mean that he is not biases. He is very rude, unapproachable and arrogant. I would never reccomend his class. Two students called him out on his rudeness and his emails and instead of apologizing to the class he got real defensive.
Lohmann takes his class seriously, he is very particular when it comes to his Reflection Responses and will dock many points on them or your papers if they are not how HE believes they should be. Dude has a passive aggressive way of teaching and it shows. Its true ,he will lecture you for asking questions implying its in the syllabus when it is not
At first, Prof. Lohmann scared me a bit not gonna lie. He's pretty blunt, and was at first scared to share my opinion. But over time you learn to deal with his quirks and enjoy the class more. AWESOME lectures. He made me see the world differently, and made me feel smarter after taking his course. Highly recommend, may give you existential crisis.
Everything he does is in the most passive aggressive tone and even emailing him feels like you're being attacked for "not checking the syllabus" even though your said question is no where in the syllabus. He grades horribly and justifies it as "he was helping" but the CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is not there, its just criticism.
Lohmann is one of the best lecturers. Weekly 1-page idea papers about any social psych topic. 1 midterm (m.c. + 2 in-class essays), 1 final. Most of your grade is based on exams. Discussions on BB about idea papers + comment on 8 other idea papers. Class can be a lot to handle, but he makes it easier to understand with his AMAZING lectures!
He is blunt. Don't take the passive aggressive things he says to heart. I was scared of him at first, but he is really passionate about lecturing. You don't need a textbook, because his lectures are more than enough to get you a good score on the exam. Make sure you read through the syllabus and assignment guidelines twice before asking a question!
One of the best professors and one of my favorites. He is very straight forward and funny!! He has weekly one page papers, weekly quizzes, one midterm, and one final. Social psych is already interesting as it, but with his humor it is even better. 10/10 would recommend and worth the 8 am class.
The ppl calling him "blunt" in other reviews can't handle his swag. You need to show up to lecture to understand the content! Lohmann is one of the best lecturers so having him for an 8am class was worth it. Take him if u want to find out the #truth about life - he changed my perspective about everything. If you don't take him it's your loss!
Great professor. He engages the entire class and loves what he does!
Professor Lohmann is the greatest professor I have ever met. He cares about his students, and he makes sure that his students understand and know the material. His lectures are very interesting because of how passionate he is about his job. I dont understand why people skip his class. I went to every class session and enjoyed every minute.
He's very passionate about the subject, which is great. But the class is hard. His lectures are not traditional, he just talks at you so you have to figure out what you should be writing down in the notes. He's very difficult to talk to. Kind of mean in a sarcastic, 'I know what im doing because im the professor' kind of way.
He DOES come off as a bit intimidating and sarcastic, but his lectures are very inspiring. Hes very passionate about social psychology and you will learn a lot. He is a picky grader though. He transitioned well when the pandemic hit and was very understanding.
I don't enjoy his teaching methods. He does NOT use powerpoint and I find myself struggling to learn what he is teaching because everything is handwritten or drawn out on his computer. If this might be something that hinders your ability to learn I'd stay away. I also haven't found him very helpful and most students are too intimidated to ask Q's.
Midterm and a final. 9 one page papers not too hard. Posts all his lectures and very easy to talk to during office hours. Doable class
Professor Lohmann is such a passionate professor and truly cares for his students. There are weekly quizzes on readings, sometimes every other week. And theres also weekly reflection questions. Attendance isnt mandatory except for days that he does participation points. Only two exams. You have to choose btwn Comm service or research paper.
Without a doubt the most frustrating professor I have ever had. Very rude and does not provide constructive criticism on papers for you to improve on. Instead he writes comments like only writing the word no on my paper which I found very rude and unnecessary. Lecture notes are mainly drawings which are not helpful for studying.
Super Rude!!! He grades very weird and any little small mistake made you basically fail. On the final that was 90 minutes he added 3 essays at the end and every 5 minutes that you go past the time he takes 5 points off! After he grades your essay he makes the most rude and unnecessary comments, it is not even constructive criticism, its just mean.
Professor thinks very highly of himself and come off as extremely narcissistic. Is not good at responding to emails, and can be very frustrating.
He can be rude and thinks he is always right. Does not even give good feedback, he just criticizes your work. But I can say he does talk deeply about topics.
Terrible attitude. Non approachable. No clear guidelines for idea papers which you will write weekly, exams hefty & hard with 2 short answer + a cartoon image to analyze using psychological concepts. Discussion boards weekly Dreaded this class with my entire existence.
He gives feedback on idea papers that some might find mean, but I actually thought they were funny. He does not grade based on whether or not you agree with him, he grades based on the quality of your work. So, if he disagrees with something in your paper he will not mark you down as long as you did what the assignment asked.
Lohmann is a tough grader but he's very passionate about the subject and will actually teach you the content. His comments on essays can be passive-aggressive but if you ask him how to fix your essays during his OH he's helpful and will make you a better writer. Throughout the semester you'll have assignments, an ongoing paper, midterm and final.
None of his lectures were organized, quizzes were individual & done in groups ( with people who never read lecture materials). Each exam was basically his own ideas & has no connection to lectures, textbook, or assigned reading. He goes over class time to continue speaking ... no ppt .. just pure winging it and how hes feeling that day? AVOID
Dr. Lohmann really cares about what hes teaching. He is so knowledgeable, but I think sometimes it can get to his head. He is very nitpicky when grading, and can be harsh in the comments. However, I enjoyed his lectures, and how he made the content relevant to real situations. Make sure you are taking notes during lectures.
Don't recommend it. He's not a bad professor, but his teaching style did not help me understand the content at all. No powerpoints, just a long rant on societal issues. You need to read A LOT! He's also a super tough grader, gave me unnecessarily rude comments on my papers. He is willing to help though, just reach out to him. Good Luck!
Professor Lohman is Amazing. I don't know about these reviews. He's just straight forward which you will appreciate. Lots of readings though, weekly quizzes, 10 idea papers through the semester ( makes you think) 2 Tests, midterm & final MC &3-4 short essay questions & discussion points. Don't be intimidated. Just do the work. you'll LOVE his class
He doesn't use PowerPoint so be prepared to really pay attention. Exams are based mainly on his lectures so they were not too difficult. There is about eight 1 page papers total, each due every other week which was probably the more difficult part. And a quiz every week. He grades pretty tough but is an amazing professor and a great class to take.
Liked him as a person so recommend for that. Lectures weren't from a powerpoint so it was hard to take notes, but everything was pretty straight forward. Study guides were provided before each exam (only 2). One paper throughout the whole class that was heavily graded with a lot of critiques which was frustrating but def improved my writing
If you're the type of student that loves reading the textbook more than lectures he isn't for you. He's very lecture heavy and all the tests are based on his biased opinion that he has presented to you through zoom lectures. No outside research either his way or the highway literally. Choose another professor save yourself the time.
Professor Lohmann is a really smart person and I have learned a lot from this course. However, there are no powerpoints and every test and quiz is lecture based. I recommend reading the book still but if you want to do the absolute bare minimum you can definitely pass just taking detailed notes on his lecture. quiz every week. 2 exams. comm service
Andrew's class is lecture heavy and heavy on critical thinking. You write one-page papers every week on a topic of your choice, but he's not looking for a topic summary, more of brainstorming. Quizzes are textbook heavy, and exams are lecture heavy. As long as you pay attention to the lecture you will be fine.
I wouldnt wear my seatbelt to class because I hated going to his class full of nonsense and no sense of direction. Leaves terrible comments and rubric is unclear.
Although his lectures can be interesting, he can be extremely passive aggressive in not just emails but in grading comments. He gets frustrated when you disagree or ask questions. He is not approachable and is the toughest grader I’ve ever had. He would literally just right “no” as feedback and then dock me a significant amount of points.
the lectures are fantastic in this class. prof can come off as a bit harsh, but if you can learn to not take it personally (it isn't) you'll be fine. the 9 idea papers can be tricky, but again, don't take the grading too personally. he's the kind of prof you'll either love or won't. he has some graphics up on bb, but the lectures aren't on slides
I did not enjoy the class material AT ALL, but the professor made lecture interesting. He is passionate and speaks clear. Write down everything he says and ask questions. The exam is based on lecture. Seriously, write it all down. His idea papers had no structure and I was often lost on what to write and my grade suffered.
Actually the worst professor I have ever had. His grading criteria is unclear and leaves unnecessary and rude comments on your papers. This class is a nightmare for anyone who is not an auditory learner. I missed more classes than I attended because I physically could not bear to sit through this class. Save yourself the headache.
Professor Lohmann is a tough grader at first, but once you undestand what he wants the class ends up being easy. Easy weekly online quizzes, 1 page idea papers often, a midterm and a final which are both simple if you pay attention to lectures and take good notes. There are weekly discussions for easy points. Lectures do not have slides though.
Pay actual attention in class and take notes, you'll be fine. Didn't buy or read the textbook but was still able to pass easily- don't let it intimidate you. Lohmann takes effort but it's mostly because he gives a crap. He's a cool guy and a fair teacher. Yes, a lot of "rants on social issues," but it's because he cares about people.
The lectures do not match what's on the quiz/exams. You need to attend the lecture to grasp the material and even then his lectures are all over the place. It's really difficult to study because what he lectures about isn't in the textbook. Yet, he requires you to purchase the book. He has weekly quizzes and idea papers. Do not take him!!!
DONT take this class! You have 15+ pages of reading a week, on a quiz that is also worded so extremely hard. The material in this class is also nothing to do with psychology. There is MANDATORY 20 hours of community service for this course. No powerpoints to follow along material just what he says vocally in class. I wish I had dropped it so badly.
Do NOT take this class if you are easily offended! Best professor I've had! Every lecture is fun and entertaining! He is extremely knowledgeable about social psych and will have think about his lectures. This class is not meant to be an easy A and there is a 1 page paper due almost every week. However, you will definitely learn a lot from him!
It was very stressful and hard to get an A and keep my 4.0 GPA. Weirdly worded quizzes I didn't like his attitude/ tone/ some words Hard/insufficient time multiple choice midterm and final Community service 7 reflections Too much work & readings for 3 unit course Does not provide constructive feedback You must TAKE NOTES of his lectures
AWFUL! Run! Quizzes every other day (worded poorly), he often goes off of lecture topic & also is condescending & argues w/ students in class! he should take a course on how to converse via e-mail, very disrespectful/sassy, he also needs to update his very old syllabus full of errors. So many other profs who actually help and teach, do not take him
Classtime consists of lectures and sometimes group work. Doing the assignments is not a problem. I actually enjoy the class. However, he assigns a research paper that is submitted in sections. Pick a topic you're actually interested in cause man is it draining. He grades critically but provides good feedback. I recommend if you dont mind the paper.
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't come you'll struggle. His lectures are just him basically rambling on and tests are confusing. Readings are very heavy as well. Grades pretty harsh. Personally, I'd just try to stay away from the class if you want an easy class.
PSY350 Attending lecture is not mandatory but IMO necessary to be successful in the course. Interesting lectures mostly. Easy weekly quizzes. (4) 3 page papers that weren't too bad. He assigns a lot of reading and tests are difficult. I didn't put too much effort and got a B.
This professor alone made me want to drop out of college. He's condescending and I should've read the reviews prior to enrollment. On the massive paper we had to write, he'd ask students to bring in evidence to break down piece by piece as a class and practice fallacies. I used the quotes exactly as he did them and he cussed me out on the final.
Get ready to read pages upon pages every week, along with quizzes weekly which are most of the time are very easy. The lectures are done without PowerPoints so make sure to take notes. The midterm was very difficult due to the wording of some of the multiple choice questions. I got a D on the midterm however the final was easier and I got a C
This is the only class I have taken that I did not get an A in. I received a 89.8 as my final grade. The grade in mainly the mid term and final exam. The whole class average was 50/60% and he said that was above average for his classes. The exams are essay questions with hardly enough time to read and finish everything.
Very expressive when teaching, opens up your perspective, quizzes every week, DO NOT take if your feelings get hurt easily, asks a lot of questions that spark up debate in a way that makes you think outside the individual perspective. He seems kind of harsh at first but honestly he's super chill and a great professor.
Professor Lohmann's class requires a lot of reading and note-taking, but engaging with the material pays off. Unstuck study helped me stay on track with weekly quizzes. Fair grading, interesting lectures.
lohmann is a very old school prof. he comes off as harsh, but he cares for his students. this class is difficult but worth it if you have the capacity for it. everything is based off lectures, so attend and take good notes if you wanna do good in his class. community psych is very niche but a good class to take imo
This class is not easy at all. You have to make sure you get at least a B for the assigments because he is a VERY tough grader. he also does not give extra credit or rounds up your grade. He understands how students feel and doesn't really care. Some people might enjoy the class but I really didn't..
Professor Lohmann's class was my favorite class to attend. Yes his lectures are intense but he makes it so interesting and makes you think. If you attend class and pay attention this class isn't as hard as people make it out to be. Attend class and pay attention is all. Those who complain just want everything handed to them.
Lohmann is one of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures were something I always looked forward to and helped me think critically about the world. You'll struggle if you can't keep an open mind and really pay attention to the lectures. 20 hrs of community service, a few exams, weekly quizzes (about 9), and reflection questions.
This class felt more like a political science class than a psychology class. He doesn't use PowerPoint and rambles. He even openly admitted that his exams are hard and doesn't care. There are 3 exams, 4 papers, weekly quizzes, and class participation. He is rude to all his students and gets mad when you disagree with him. STAY AWAY!
Lohmann's class isn't for everyone and that's exactly the point. Expects to show up, think critically, and not coast on half-effort. The course is tough but rewarding if you commit to it. He challenges lazy arguments, which keeps discussions sharp. Not an easy A, but if you want to actually grow and not be spoon-fed, it's absolutely worth it.
This professor was probably my least favorite so far. He was very standoffish and enjoyed proving people wrong. His quizzes were easy because they were based on the textbook, but the exams were very difficult. I did the paper instead of community service and he was a very harsh grader and did not answer my questions nicely. Would not take again.
Professor Lohman is a good professor, he is funny and his class isn't that difficult. I found it pretty easy to navigate.
Does not have a powerpoint so you have to do your own notes during his lectures, which he goes on quite a few tangents. His exams were pretty difficult, something that he owns up to at the beginning. His media papers (4), drops the lowest, however he does grade them pretty tough and I wasn't able to get anything higher than a 90.
He is the worst professor at CSULB. He is weirdly picky about grading and gives no feedback. His tests are so random, I had no idea what to study. IT DID NOT MATCH THE STUDY GUIDE. It's weekly quizzes, 20 hours of community service, short essay questions, a midterm, and a final. I would stay away and pick something else.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, DO NOT
