Great professor. Knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about history. Cares about students.
Very enthusiastic abou the subject of History which is definitely needed. I really was dreading taking the class at the beginning of the semester. I really enjoyed his class.
very smart and enthusiastic. go to class and learn the study guide.
Manis is a national treasure. be ready for your brain to be challenged--the class changes your life. he is a gifted and fair teacher. he gives you a good study guide and the test reflects it. very straight forward--no tricks up his sleeve.
Perspectives on Religion is a fun class. Can be controversial. Manis is friendly and open to class debate scenarios.
He does not explain topics well enough and he gives out bad grades

I had him for Perspectives in American Religious Diversity, and it was an interesting class. We had class discussions and his lectures eventually would lead to these discussions and all students were allowed to speak freely. The assignments were actually enjoyable to do, as well.
manis is very intersting and clarifies his stuff. he is very knowledgeable and helpful in getting his point across. he is fair and gives study guides that the test goes by.he makes the class interesting.
Dr Manis is a very good professor. He lectures heavily, but invites feedback and poses questions to his classes. Aside from not being able to operate a computer, he has few flaws. He is a liberal, but who says this is bad? He does not let any political ideology influence his lecture, by my observation anyway. Highly recommend this guy!
Dr. Manis is a very liberal man and will raise some controvery during the semester. He is fair and tells you exactly what to exspect from his test. These are college level classes and he exspects college level work. As long as you truely learn what is on his study sheets and go to class every day you can pass easily with an A.
Prof Manis is truly an inspiring teacher. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend him to any student. He truly has a love for History and you will find that you will also after taking this course. He has a FIRE YOU CAN'T PUT OUT!!
Dr. Manis is really cool. He gives a lot of lecture but he makes the material easy for you to understand. He tries his best to make history interesting. He focuses a lot on black history, but HE IS NOT ****! I recommend him to ANYONE looking for a good professor of HISTORY!!!!!
Excellent teacher. Manis is well-organized, open-minded, and passionate about the subject. In class you can really get the whole picture and not worry about pedantic details and then hit the real important stuff on the study guide he gives a week before the exam. Interesting class and well taught. Recommended!
Dr. Manis is awesome. He's very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and he's the only prof. I've encountered yet that makes history not-boring. I can't say enough good things about him. Study guides are straight-up and he gives you everything you need to know for the test. If you take the time to work with the study guide, you're gold. Recommended.

Liked the class...didn't like having to read his huge book that he wrote about segregation, but the assignment with it was easy.
Dr Manis is so cool. He's smart and funny. Made history interesting for me.
i took him for 2111 and got an A with ease. took his 2112 class just to learn more about history and it was worth it. he gives you study guides a week before the test. don't even need to buy the book - just use the study guide and look up the terms online.
i had him for both 2111 and 2112. gives a study guide with exactly what could be on the test. no funny stuff. if you make and memorize your flash cards youll be fine. I made Bs in both classes. dont buy the book, you don't need it.
Don't buy into the hype. He gives you a "STUDY GUIDE" a week in advance with "60" terms and 4 essays. Sounds easy but its "OVER KILL." He doesn't teach, just rambles. If you want or need a headache, just ram your head against the wall. It'll save you a LOT of TIME and STRESS! I would definetly NOT recommend him to anyone who wants to pass.
Dr. Manis is great! Interesting class - people have to understand his sense of humor. You will work hard in his class and you have to study but hey you are in college!
I highly recommend Dr. Manis. He is very Knowledgeable about history! If you take his class, be prepared to give 200%. He gives a study guide out a week before the exams. So, if you look up the information and study it, you will do well...Just be prepared to STUDY!
Manis's class was joke. However, he does give a study guide and doesn't take roll. He requires a five page book report and three community activities. Test are fill in the blank/short answer/essay. If you're just looking to get through history, take him. If you actually want to learn something, look elsewhere.
Dr. Manis is a great professor who evaluates very fairly. If you simply read the assigned chapters and study moderately, you will be do great in the class. I definitely recommend him.
Dr. Mannis is a TRIP! His lectures are VERY interesting and I am NO History buff. His study guides are HARD and his tests HARDER. You get out what you put in with him!

He makes you buy his book that he wrote and do a report on it. His tests seemed overwhelming to me.
Great! He was a very good Professor. I would definitely recommend him. Like everyone has said, you will have/need to buy his book. You will like him. He gives you great notes and even gives a great study guide for his tests. Great class discussions. I learned a lot...didn't just "memorize" but actually learned!
GREAT Teacher! Enthusiastic, makes you think. Dramatic with a decent sense of humor. Will make an effort to help you if you're having trouble. Nobody should leave MSC without taking Manis.
Manis is a very enthusiastic teacher. If you take his notes and read the section, the tests are not hard. he gives a study guide at least a week before the test and if you do the study guide and study it, you should have not problem getting and A. People that get low grades, did not put in any effort. I did the study guide and looked over it a f
This was the class on earlier History. I did not like this teacher. He gives way to much reading and thinks your able to devote 150 percent to just his class. I withdrew from this class. Im going to take it next semester with a different teacher.
(Religious Diversity in America.) -I wouldn't take him again. Very nice guy, but doesn't make for the best teacher. Doesn't take roll. If your opinion isn't near his, he basically dismisses it. His tests were difficult... no word bank. Does give out study guides, though. Have to be willing to put a lot of work into reading and studying.
Dr. Manis' class is hard, but you'll learn if you care at all. To me, he is quite entertaining. Before his class I was not interested in history, but now I like it, so go figure..Attend class, that's important and do his study guides. He stayed unbiased in my class even when students begged his opinion. I liked him, but you have to try in his clas
Great Professor!!! He makes american history seem really interesting. I am a history major and this is the best history professor i have taken so far. He is very enthustastic and opininated. You do have to read the book though, but come on, its freakin college!! Take him and i promise you will learn alot.
If you study his study guides for the tests you will get an A or B.
This professor is AMAZING. Before taking this class , history was NOT my thing. He made it interesting , and actually helped us apply it to everyday life. You DO have to read the book for quizes but he drops your lowest two grades. He gives REALLY helpfull study guides. Do the study guide with your notes from class and you will be fine
Great professor who clearly loves what he teaches. He has a deep interest in the history of African Americans and the Civil Rights Mvt. so if you do not like that sort of stuff at all, you may not like some of the lectures. Very energetic about course material and committed to the success of his students. Two notes of advise: Read assigned texts
A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!! great guy funny and if you can take him during football season, and pray Alabama is doing good! great guy funny and informative. A tad liberal. . .but other wise awesome!
does not have mandotory attendance, but get irritated when people come in late and leave early. He gives random pop quizzes and makes you write 1 paper on a book. His test are fair. He gives a study with sixty terms, but only 30 will be on test. He also gives you 4 essay, but only 1 will be on test. I passed the class w/oout reading

Great teacher. Relates great to the class. Big on debate and class participation. Enjoys hearing student's point of views. Occasionally he chases rabbits but overall a good professor. Alot of memorization for his exams.
He's an ex-preacher so he talks like one and preaches which makes me fall asleep. He makes you read every night which takes most people like 3 hours! He gives you 60 terms which you have to look up and know EVERYTHING about. He only puts 20 on the test! Out of the 4 essays on the study guide, you only have one, which you have to write a page and a
Very helpful, always looking for a way to help studendt with their grades
He's a good teacher,he is very entertaining. You have to do what he says to get a good grade in this class. Do the note cards and read IT HELPS! The class may seem boring but he makes it interesting! He's an Alabama so you'll have to forgive him! But I would take him again!
Don't bother reading because it doesn't help except on quizes which there are only about 6 that require reading. For the test you get a review sheet with 60 terms and 4 essays. Go home and make notecards for the terms by using wiki or other useful sites and study them. I got an A in the class and never opened the book the semester.
he doesnt go over anything & he gets off subject allll the time!
Great professor, keeps the class engaged and knows a great deal about his subject. One can really tell he has a passion for teaching and he makes you work for your grade.
DO NOT BUY A TEXT BOOK FOR THIS CLASS! Wikipedia works just as good because of the study guides he gives you. Hes pretty good about keeping you interested but his tests are kind of hard to master at first but once u get the hang of things they are not so bad. Funny guy but you must study the material for the tests or you will fail!
Dr. Manis is an award winning author and has been very active in Civil Rights. I think a lot of students do not realize they are being taught by a legend. He is fair, interesting, and thought provoking, but not easy. Grades fairly hard on grammar. His classes change the way you view history.
He is Hard!!! You have to buy his book, but it really isnt that bad once you get into it! You get what you put in the class, dont take it as an easy "A".
An absolutely wonderful teacher! He offers new perspectives and grades exactly the way he explains on the first day. Tests aren't bad as long as you do the Study Guide. Attendance isn't mandatory, but class participation is a part of your grade and he factors it in at the end.
Slightly annoying teaching style. Lectures become increasingly nonlinear as the material goes post-WWII. Quizzes are semi-seldom, and are rarely pulled straight from the homework, so being prepared can be tough. Overall not bad, would probably take again.
He is a great teacher.
He is only hard if you do not do the work. The poeple he descusses is key to every test. Do not take unless you are a good writer. I love him and will be taking him for the third time next semester.
Always a good semester
I like old Manis. He is a bit quirky in his lecture style, but does a great job, and is very engaging in the classroom. His exams are hard.
Great professor and an even better man. Gotta love any professor that gives you a fist bump as you walk back to your seat after recieving your diploma!!!
Great person but he is very long winded with his lectures. He will discuss one subject the entire class time. In my class we got so far behind that no one in class even knew what chapter we were on. But as long as you do your study guide you will pass the class. He also does not take attendence. So overall good but very boring.
Not to hard of a class. Study you notes and do the study guide and you can make it. Attandance is not taken, but he gives pop quizes, which can help or kill your grade.
This guy is awesome. His tests are NOT hard if you actually do his study guides. Basically, he is super easy if you do the reading and the work, so I would suggest a love of history if you're going to take him.. He gets off topic in lectures, but his tangents are usually interesting and informative. DON'T use the word amazing. Just trust me.
I HATED this class! He gets off topic easily, & can sometimes be very argumenative. If he doesn't agree with what you have to say he will shut you down. He rambles a lot, & it gets annoying! You don't have much work, but if you don't read the text book for the quizes, there is no hope in passing them.He tries to make things super complicated!
He's not a bad guy, however he can be really rude sometimes. He's not afraid to shut students down, and will do so publicly. Also, HE IS THE MOST LONG WINDED PERSON I HAVE EVER MET. He will ramble on for an hr about a 5 minute long topic. But his class is extremely easy, he just talks a lot, and gets sassy lol.
This has been the worst class I have ever taken. He gets off topic VERY easily & can sometimes be very argumentative. If he doesn't agree with what you have to say he will shut you down. He tries to make things super complicated! I only read for the first quiz and failed it, never read again & passed the rest of the quizzes.
I didn't learn anything in this class. I went in with an open mind and hoping to learn about religion. I came out with only the things I googled.
He teaches all over the place... No structure, and he stutters, terribly. He fell asleep a few times when he put on old videos of religion... But he expected us to stay awake and take notes?!?! He has weird expectations and it's all I could do to get a B in his class... What a joke. The only thing I learned is I will never take him again.
I hated this class so much I couldn't even finish it. His teaching style was warped and I couldn't see myself passing so I withdrew. His tests were beyond difficult and the class was overall really boring, would not recommend!
Professor Manis was an alright teacher. He did a few things during class that were nice, like giving us a quiz with obvious answers and setting up a class quiz bowl, but overall the class wasn't too enjoyable. It was moderate.
He's a nice guy, but his teaching style is infuriatingly scattered. I have to go back over his notes and correct all the typos before I print them. He is unorganized. Would not recommend him at all.
Brilliant, well published authority on Civil Rights and Religion. Not a professor for dullard student, but if you are smart, he presents a fascinating and challenging class experience.
Constant massive sidebar derailments during lectures. He has a very hard time staying on topic. But he makes the class interesting and is very respectful. He's a very intelligent and compassionate man and handled a fairly sensitive subject very well. He practically spells out what is on the tests, which are pretty easy. Great professor
I wouldn't suggest this class for anyone that doesn't need to specifically take it for their major. He is not helpful. I emailed him four days before the exam, and I did not get a response. His teaching is hard to follow. He gets off topic way too easily, so I suggest you like reading because that is the only way you will have a chance of passing.
Manis is so hilarious without even trying! He gives a midterm and final. He also gives study guides for the midterm and final. He does not try to trick you on his tests either. Study the study guides and you'll do fine.
THE BEST.
Dr. Manis is a jewel in the crown of this university. He is a historian, not an entertainer. Students who are engaged in learning will love him, and the whiners will hate him. If you can't back up statements and are wrong, he will say so in class.
I liked the guy at the beginning of the class, and I have done great in his class. However, he does not teach from a balanced perspective. His lectures and tangents are very left-wing liberal. I can't figure out what happened to him because he used to be a Baptist pastor but is now clearly an atheist. Overall, do the work and you'll be fine.
You should take his history 2111 class. He's a good professor. At the begining of the semester, i thought i was going fail the class but i didn't. I passed the class with A. The key to passing this class with A is to study hard speak to him about how important the class is to you.
It seems that he does not like to read over his notes before class, thus he will go over the same thing again. Overall it is not a tough course but please study for the tests.
Professor Manis is very enthusiastic about history. He tends to get off topic because of this. He would get distracted by specific things that he cared about that weren't necessarily important.
He is amazing! Just use the study guides he gives you and you'll be fine!
He's great only teacher this whole semester that gave out study guide!!! his lectures can be a little boring but he tries to make them funny when we can! The tests are simple fill in the blank (no word bank) and a short essay.
Dr. Manis is a great historian, and he really loves his subject and wants to share his knowledge of it! That being said, he is not a very good lecturer and struggles with computers. Most of his grades are from tests and he gives you a clear study guide. His extra credit opportunities are more complicated than they are worth.
Terrible. Just terrible. Didn't learn anything, dropped the class because of his teaching. Completely unprofessional and unprepared. Didn't even know how to use Tophat but expected us to know. Don't take his class.
Dr. Manis is very passionate about history; perhaps too much so. He tends to go off on ridiculous rants about nothing in particular and will use up the entire class time talking about something off-topic. We didn't even make it past the Vietnam War in a history class going to present day. Course uses online textbook, professor cannot use computers.
DO NOT TAKE. Manis is very unorganized and has trouble getting through the material. He often gets of topic and eventually has to skip material in order to get through the class. Despite doing well on his tests and doing two extra credit papers, I still received a C in the class.
