Good prof. for stats, funny guy, easy going, lets us know what is on the tests, group quizes
A very good teacher Highly recommended
He's very funny and is pretty clear with the info. He allows group quizzes!
this guy rules, hes hilarious and easy
Matchett is an absolutely great teacher. hes really funny and he makes sure to go over everything thats going to be on the tests. If you try in this class, you will do well because he really helps you out
Matchett is awesome---really funny, and he helps you understand every concept.
Matchett is awesome. He really knows how to teach in a way students can understand. He's really nice as well.
Hes an old goofy guy, but he makes the class so much easier to understand and is so helpful
Coolest Dude ever, total math nerd but thats cool he makes fun of people and is really good at what he does. Arrange your schedule for him.
great with giving examples in class
He makes the class so much more fun. He makes you laugh every classes and his examples are great and funny. The tests are easy because he tells the materials before the test.
Hardly any homework, tests aren't to bad. Pretty easy. He moves through materials very slowly.
The class is really fun, I think I laughed at him everyday. He tells you exactly what is going to be the tests. Not much homework and when you get some he is a very easy grader.
He was a extremely interesting person. Often he laughed at himself and forgot what he was doing. Sometimes he had a hard time expaining a couple of concepts, but overall he was pretty fun.
Very weird, but funny! I had this class early in the morning, but he made me laugh almost everday. He tells you everything you need to know (and sometimes even the questions) for the test!
Great teacher, gives lots of group quizzes, very easy. Explains things well, a little wierd, but that makes the class more interesting.
One of the best professors I have ever taken. He has a very quirky sense of humor.
Great stats profssor for sure.
I have had four other math professors in college and he is BY FAR the vest one yet. Great teacher and soooo funny. Definitely take this dude!
The material is hard, but he is an easy grader. Sometimes unclear, but you will know exactly what is on the test by the time it comes. I recomend him.
He can't explain worth anything!!! He seems to go in circles a lot and if he is explaining a problem and can't figure it out, he just reassigns it, probably hoping you will forget about it. Seems like a nice enough guy but isn't the greatest calculus prof.
Not at all easy to understand
matchett's a riot! this was my favorite class! he's really into math and gets excited about every problem. if you're looking for a teacher who can explain things clearly though, don't take him for calc.
explains well and goes pretty slow, as good as stats can get
He's really and really nice guy! Not really good at explaination if you never have calc before make sure that the person seats next to you have really good explaination and already knew about calc. But his exams are really easy compare to the same class but different professor. easy grader!
He explains calc as well as anyone can...very nice guy and sometimes strangly funny...hes the cutest man i've ever seen. I would highly recommend and take him again.
Half of learning math is what you put into it yourself. Therefore, making sure students have fun while doing so is essential to being a good math teacher. A+ Dr. Matchett!
One word.....AWESOME. Take him if you can. I never went to class without laughing at him at least once.

he teaches you how to do the test during the test. pretty funny. expects 1st and 6th graders to know calculus.
Take him for stats! This is the easiest class with him, and he is hilarious, without ever trying to be! Classes get a little boring sometimes, but he's so entertaining.
An extremely helpful prof. He will help you any time of day-and is very helpful. If you do a few of the problems each assignment you will get a A in the class. Every exam except the 1st one (easy) you get to use notes/book/ and calculator.
Seems like a nice guy but is a total math geek. I've heard there are way worse Statistics proffs though, so I muddled through this course.
I am in his class right now and I'm taking calculus for the second time. His class is so much harder than my other prof. I heard that he has a ridiculously favorable grade curve at the end so I'm holding out for that. Try another prof or be prepared to spend all waking hours in the tutor room.
He doesn't really explain stuff very well
I took calc in high school and understood it, and i am now taking it in college and i am lost...Spends most of the class saying how an equation was derived instead of how to use the equation. Also likes to have you use a crappy math program to type math hard math assignments that tutors have problems doing. It Sucks butt
I have no idea why his ratings were so high. I did well in every single math class except his, I got a C. He gives absolutely no points for work on tests so if you make one little mistake you're screwed. Not as hard as some other profs though.
I'm sure Dr. Matchett knows his stuff, but for the love of all humanity, he can't teach it. Many times he was extremely hard to follow because he would keep second-guessing himself. He's a nice guy, but I'm pretty sure you'd have better luck with another statistics professor.
Amazing. I heard a lot of people have a difficult time with stats, but he will do anything to help you so you will know the material. Hilarious also.
Doesn't collect homework, i did none and did fine..."quiz" once a week, which are actually really easy group quizes and are usually on what he just got done explaining. He doesn't give partial credit on tests but gives exact examples of what will be on the test and 90% of it can be done on a graph calculator. Take him if you can hes easy and funny.
Tough class, requries more time than you would think... Test problems are almost identical to homework problems. Dr. Matchett was very confusing to me, and I had a difficult following him. Therefore I decided to drop and continue with 145 at a later time.
Matchett is one of the easiest stats professors on the campus! He goes super slow, so it is not hard to keep up and he gives quizzes that reflect exactly what is on the exam. He doesn't collect homework, but if you do it, the tests are a breeze! And watch out, cuz he doesn't really give partial credit on your exams, so look them over!
Funny Guy
Matchett is pretty easy. He is definitely an easy-going guy. Can be somewhat boring at times, but not too bad. I know I did horribly on the final, so he must have curved it because I ended up pulling off an AB. :)
Little structure.
i would not reccomend dr. matchett. if you have never had statistics before, he is not the professor to start out with because he doesn't explain things very well. he gets confused easily and makes a lot of mistakes of his own which is frustrating. however, if you do the homework and ask for help, you will do fine.
I got a 4 on the AP Calculus test in high school. Took Professor Matchett's class and ended up withdrawing from the course half way through the semester to avoid failing. Test problems require a lot of tricks and algebra to even get them to the point where you could solve them. Would not recommend for Calc 2 at all.
The test questions are pretty much straight from the homework, except easier. I recommend taking him.
He gets a little lost in his own work sometimes when he tries to do examples. No notes -- all examples during class, or else he does practice problems that he assigns. Doing homework isn't required but I recommend doing a little of it at least a quarter of every assignment. I failed a test because I didn't do any homework. Funny guy though.
Smart, funny, and friendly. If you do not ask questions in class about the homework or steps on the board that you do not understand, you will get lost. He assumes everyone understands if no one asks questions about it. He will answer your questions entirely! So, ask questions, enjoy his jokes, and hold in there for the curve at the end. JUST ASK!
Moves slowly through the material which is very nice. I would recommend taking him for stats. 50% of the quizes are group work, get to use formula sheets. Sometimes loses his train of thought or goes off on a very unnecessary (and funny) tangent. Overall, a good professor.
He has illegible handwriting and mumbles a bit, but is a good professor. He is silly in a cute old man way, and his tests and quizzes aren't hard. Get to use a formula sheet for some tests/final. Homework isn't madatory, but it helps A LOT!
He's the UWL version of Russel Crowe from "A Beautiful Mind". Seriously, he looks like Professor Nash. I liked him a lot, funny and helpful guy. Extremely friendly. Advice: Do your homework, ask questions, sit up close because his notes are kinda hard to read. That's it! Do all those things and an A is np.
If you want to FAIL Stats take Matchett. He has very poor communication skills. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He rambles because he loves show how intelligent he is instead of teaching. He puts problems on the test that he went over only once in class. You use your (incomplete)notes and his created problems instead of a book.
He goes through the material fairly slowly, and he goes into detail on all the problems as long as you ask. Never gets upset and is actually kind of funny. Homework is not mandatory, but attendance is. Put examples from the board on your "cheat sheet" for tests cuz theyre always very similar.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! avoid
I would avoid Matchett if I could redo it. He doesn't give ANY partial credit on tests at all, and is terrible at explaining stuff. Sure he's a cute old guy, but not using a book or having material explained overpowers that in my eyes. You get to use a notes sheet on the test, though.
he stands up in front of class talking into the chalk board. when you ask a question he goes around in circles but somehow gets the answer. He is very hard to follow with his thinking. Took calc in high school and understood it but now its much more confusing. Basically have to reteach everything to myself. AVOID if possible
Matchett is a tough teacher, would not take again. He assigns graded homework problems that a Calc IV student i know couldn't even figure out. Tests are very difficult and pretty sure almost everyone is getting around a D at the time. I heard he curves at the end of the semester so looking forward to that, but would not take again
SUPER EASY CLASS! I've never taken stats before and this is pretty simple. He moves slow, tells you what questions will be on tests and quizzes. You get a notesheet and partner quizzes. Has real messy handwriting but you just have to pay attention. DEFINITELY TAKE MATCHETT
Warning: I love statistics, I do it on a daily basis. Microsoft Excel is my friend but I ended up with a D! Why? His notes are incomplete, and then he puts problems on tests that he only went over once in class! He doesn't use the book so if you take him and want an A, you better use it on your own time or find a different professor!
He is kind of hard to understand sometimes, but will answer any questions! He likes to teach and likes to see his students succeed. I had never had stats before and got an A in his class. Couple tips: GO TO CLASS, ask questions, do the homework assignments!
Worst teacher I've ever had. He fails to teach in a way that students can understand it. He goes around in circles and somehow gets to the answer, but no one knows how he got there. He does not give partial credit since he thinks that you "make the problem easier" if you make a mistake and that mistake carries over and you are screwed. AVOID
I took AP Calc last year and he just confused me so much more on things that I thought I understood. I wouldn't recommmend him for Calc I. He gives a lot of homework and gets really picky. His tests are hard because he barely goes over info that will be on them. I heard he is good for Stats, but just don't take him for Calc. Average grade is a C.
DUDE, this guy gives no partial credit and is impossible to understand. He wrote his own textbook and everyone knows how those professors are. AVOID Matchett
He was the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. Honestly, he shouldn't even be teaching elementary mathematics because he doesn't even know the alphabet. He was unbelievably confusing, and ran circles around everything he ever taught. I stopped going to class and started teaching myself and I understood it better. Avoid at all costs!!!!!!!!
Matchett is TERRIBLE. He doesn't explain himself, doesn't have a text book, refuses to answer questions he doesn't feel are necessary and he MUMBLES through his lecture. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
Matchett has NO clue what he's talking about. Doesn't explain anything, doesn't use a book, and is very unhelpful. Unless you're great at teaching yourself without a book, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Terrible teacher. do not take. Smart person but does not know how to teach. Wait to scatterbrained to teach a lesson to a class. Doesnt care that students fail. If you want to be annoyed that your not learning material all semester then take him
Matchett really tries his best to teach, but he does so in a way that is almost impossible to understand. He doesn't use a book; all of the problems are online and he wrote them himself. There are only a few assignments that he collects and grades, but they have to be typed. Tests can be tricky.
Andrew made me laugh on a daily basis. He is so goofy it is an absolute joy coming to class. He is unquestionably a self-described "math nerd" and he's proud of it. You get to use notes on exams so it's pretty easy to get a good grades.
Absolutely horrid! Does not have a clue how to teach. His tests are completely impossible and he does not help at all. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE TEACHER DO NOT TAKE! Not clear on the subject and NO book to reference! he is very picky on tests and does not give partial credit. do NOT take unless you ABSOLUTELY have to and even then I would wait until the next semester for a different teacher!
Avoid at all costs for 100 level classes. He seems like a really nice guy, but teaching intro stats just isn't for him. He'd jump around and go on wild tangents, and then run out of time. There's no book so you're outa luck if he didn't cover something.
Absolutely a terrible teacher! Unclear, no book to reference, doesn't even teach you about what your homework is on. Self taught class...
Do not take him for math! Calc 2 is hard enough as is without vague, confusing notes to teach yourself from. He used demeaning language in class and I found most days to be frustrating.
Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. Simply does not teach you what you need to know to be successful. You are better off learning Stats from Wikipedia. He doesn't even teach you what you need to know for tests.
Do not take unless you can take perfect tests and like to teach yourself. No partial credit on tests and no textbook. Unapproachable and hard to follow. I feel sorry for him because he is losing it. He will sit in the front of the class and talk to himself. Do not recommend, especially if you don't like math.
Do NOT take Professor Matchett. Although he loves what he does, he created his own textbook which is hard to understand and useless. He covers simple material all class and then expects you to learn the harder material by yourself. His tests will contain material not covered in class and he takes of large amounts of points for small mistakes.
If you want to learn the material, do NOT take him. Worst math professor I have ever had. Completely unsure when answering questions. Tests are hard. He has to curve at the end otherwise half of his students wouldn't pass his horrible class.
Andrew goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the class. He uses a textbook that he wrote himself in which the answers are frequently wrong and does not explain how to do problems. He does let you use notes on short exams and gives you 3 pages worth to use on long exams and the final. I wouldn't take him again.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! he is the worst teacher ever. His test are completely different than what he teaches. He is terrible.
Hated going to the class to listen to him ramble on about stuff that isnt even on the test
HE WAS HORRIBLE!! never knows what he is talking about, and he wrote his own textbook, which is literally NO HELP!! do not take him!
He is the worst teacher i have ever taken. he rambles on the entire class, he frequently makes mistakes in class and on the "text book" he made himself. he needs to retire.
He offers extra credit which helps but he IS NOT clear in class and always makes mistakes. The tests are hard because all he looks at is the answers and not your work. If you have a wrong answer you lose all your points. This course is not his strong suit. If you took pre-calc before you'll be fine but you haven't don't take him.
Matchett is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He is very unclear when teaching and always makes mistakes when demonstrating on the board. He does give a lot of extra credit though. He is a good guy but a god awful teacher.
I was afraid to take this class because of the previous ratings, but he really isn't that bad of a professor. Go to class and do the homework. His tests are very similar to the homework so there aren't any surprises. He's also pretty quirky and he laughs at his mistakes, which makes class less boring.
So nice, super helpful when you go for help, not always super clear but generally good. Very easy grader, all of the assignments are group assignments, quizzes are open notes and you get a full note sheet on the exam. I did very well in this class and almost never did the homework.
Good professor overall and pretty easy. Very helpful if you go to him. Presented the material slowly and clearly enough that I wasn't totally lost even though I hadn't taken a math class in 7 years. He speaks kind of quietly and is a little bit monotone, but I would definitely recommend him.
You can't read his cursive handwriting on the board till midway thru the semester. Spends upwards 40 minutes on one problem and doesn't get to the rest of the new material so plan on going to the tutors, who often don't know how to solve his hw. He wrote the textbook which is on his D2L (no paper copy) so good luck. Very socially awkward, but nice
He's a super nice guy that loves stats but he isn't the best teacher. He made up his own textbook that makes no sense. You have many in-class assignments that can boost your grade but his exams are ridiculous. The stuff you learn in class is easy but the material on exams is problems ten times harder. If you have to take stats i wouldn't take him
Matchett is a very quirky and funny guy, who really loves statistics. He teaches it in a very old fashion, however, and does not make use of new technology i.e. graphing calculators. He is very helpful, and there are always extra credit opportunities. I would probably take him again.
He's a very nice guy who always makes the class laugh with his quirks. But his teaching style can get a little confusing at first but gets easier as the year goes on. If you're not a very strong math student you may get confused easily. Tests can be difficult but in class and other small exercise for completion grades help cushion your grade book.
Dr. Matchett is the man. He is a great professor who loves math, you'll be able to tell. He will always be willing to answer questions in class and is always available during office hours. He makes statistics as enjoyable as it can be, that's for sure. Don't miss his class, he will make you write a one page paper on how to do a problem.
He explains things really well and everything is open notes or you can have a few papers with notes. As long as you pay attention and take notes it's really easy.
I have taken calc 1 at high school as an independent study and the teacher that taught me was very good explaining. Dr. Matchett is very bad at showing how to do the problem and most of the time he gets wrong answers on the board. His quizzes take the same time to finish as the test and sometimes even longer. I would not recommend him for calc 1.
Horrible professor! he makes no sense and talks to himself about how confused he is. Avoid this class if possible!!! I never understood a word he was talking about and you can not read his handwriting! He explains things in the most confusing way, you are better off going to the tutors during class instead of actually going to class.
Very good teacher. Enthusiastic about the material and made tests similar to the notes and quizzes so it was all things that were already covered in class. Never understood stats until having Dr. Matchett. Best math teacher I have ever had.
Amazing Professor as long as you go to class!. Tests are exactly like the problems done in class, just different numbers. I would definitely recommend him!
Matchett is a great guy. I've never filled out a rating before but I thought I should for this man. He's quirky in class which helps the hour fly by, but as long as you do some of the problems he assigns you should have no problem getting an easy A. Gives practice problems in class that are about 95% identical to what you will see on quizzes/exams
Does not know how to use graphing calculators so know how to use it. His lectures and notes are scattered but once you go through it all there are some good pointers. He uses a textbook he wrote, and the way he poses questions is extremely confusing. I would not suggest taking his course if you have no background. Other than that good course!
Andrew Matchett. The worst professor I have ever had kindergarten-sophomore college year. I took him for Calc I and he didn't explain anything. I was lost the whole semester as were my friends. He didn't give partial credit on exams so if you added wrong your whole problem was wrong. Got a C, took Calc 2 this semester and started out so far behind.
Very kind and adorable man with some quirky humor. If you do the bookwork and try a little bit you'll do great in this class. He tries to make it as easy as he can for you and likes everyone to get a good grade. I've never seen someone love statistics more... Just don't skip class and you'll do good!
Very passionate about the subject, although found that not all lectures were very helpful, attend class or you have to do papers on the given homework for the night. pay attention and you should pass just fine
He is literally the worst professor for calculus. I don't know about his other classes, but calc was pure hell. There is no partial credit for work, and beware that he will give extra credit on a whim. You can spend eight hours working just to receive no credit. He just confuses students and is not willing to help whatsoever.
He is a very approachable professor. He takes attendance, but you are not penalized for not attending. The quizzes are easy and help bump up your grade. The tests can be difficult but you get to bring a page of notes and formulas. I would advise you to go to class to see worked out examples.
He's a very funny, odd, but nice old man. He's kind of like that grandpa you have that has lost his mind but is still very smart. He teaches using his own textbook so homework problems are exactly like the tests which are nice. He is also a very very easy grader when it comes to tests and the small homework assignments (only five for the semester).
Older teacher who definitely knows what he is doing. He created the textbook in which all of the course work comes from. Along with that he also tends to be a very easy grader. However, the exams taken count for much of the overall grade. Just make sure to sit up in front of class if you wish to hear him in lecture and you should be fine.
EXCELLENT teacher. This was the second time I took stats and I did so so much better! I actually understood what he was talking about. He goes really slow and repeats things. It seems annoying at first but I realized it really helped me learn! Easy grader, kind person. DEFINITELY take him if you get the chance! (Plus sometimes he's funny!)
This professor was soo easy. I never did all of the homework and i still did good. he does not grade tough and his quiz questions are exactly like the test. highly recommend.
If you're planning on taking STAT145 take Matchett. He is a cute, funny old man, although kind of confusing teaching style. Do the homework he assigns and show up to class. He allows notes and formula sheets for all tests and quizzes.
Quizzes every week for 10 points, hard to do bad on them, he jokes that you get 6 points for your name (I don't think he's kidding). Get full sheet front and back for notes on exams and an equation sheet. Super funny and sweet old guy who cares about his students. Easy A for someone who's never taken stats before!
A sweet and funny old man. When it comes to teaching, hes alright. On some topics hes great, other topics hes not. However, he is the least strict grader Ive ever had in my college career. Hard to fail this class, even if you arent good at math. Just keep up with all the assignments. Matchett is great and funny.
Matchett is a sweet old man, who may be confusing sometimes but he makes the class easy to pass overall. You get to use your notes on quizzes and get formula sheets for exams (which are similar to past quizzes). He sometimes rambles, but you can tell he knows what he is doing and is passionate about the subject. Was dreading stats, but easy to pass
Professor Matchett is like that one grandpa everybody in the family loves. He is a very sweet, kind man and wants you to do well. He is always willing to help and accommodate to your needs. He's in Murphy plenty of the time, so if you're struggling you have no reason to not get help. He can be confusing at times and rambles. But he is a great prof.
Matchett is a sweet old man, but even has no idea how to teach and it is very confusing. I have always been good at math until this class. He teaches the easiest problems in notes but makes the same problem ten times more confusing on the tests. You can't read his handwriting, he talks to himself, and does not make the material clear to student.
Professor Matchett is the kindest, funniest professor I've had. Stats alone is a tough class but he makes it enjoyable with his quirky personality. There is homework assignments every night but they really help you learn. Quizzes and tests are open note which is very helpful. He also spends time going over homework questions people have. Loved him.
Matchett is a really sweet old man, but is not very good at teaching. For someone who has never taken a stats class before I found it very challenging. He never uses the textbook and teaches in his own style. His notes are unorganized and he even gets confused by his own problems. He talks quiet, and his handwriting is hard to read.
Prof Matchett is a very nice old man. He loves teaching, although his age makes some things more difficult. Test heavy but you can use your notes, about 75% of grade. Quizzes are easy, you can use literally anything on them including a computer. Was not the easiest class, but if you are good at note sheets it is a pretty easy class.
Matchett is THE go to professor if you struggle with math/statistics. He is beyond passionate about ensuring his students understand and succeed in the course which is shown through the fact he lets you use your phone/computer/notes on quizzes, and gives you at credit for your name on quizzes/exams. Beyond caring, corky, and sweet!
Andy is the grandpa I wish I had in my life... sweet, caring, and funny! Show up to class and keep up with most homework if you want to get the A. Guaranteed points for putting your name on test/quiz. Lots of projects throughout the semester that are a bit difficult to do, but easy points and grade booster! I would HIGHLY recommend prof Matchett!
I took this professor for precalc because a couple people who took him for stats said he was great. Pretty sure hes never taught precalc in his life and the material in the homework was never taught in class but showed up on quizzes and tests. Ive never been this stressed in a math course. Dont take him unless its for stats (a subject he knows)
He doesn't really seem to know what he's doing. He gets confused by problems he writes himself and doesn't know how to teach in a way that students will understand the material. The only nice thing about this class is that you can use your phone/notes on quizzes and you get points on quizzes/tests just for putting your name on it.
Prof. Matchett is a nice guy, but he is not a good teacher for PreCalc. He's not very good at solving many of the problems nor explaining how he got the answers to those problems. Homework is not graded, but I highly recommend that you still do the homework assigned since you'll likely be doing a lot of self-teaching. Go to the tutoring center!
I highly recommend taking Professor Matchett for Stats 145. He is always willing to help you outside of class to make sure you know what you're doing. His tests are formatted just like the homework so that makes them very easy. He is a such a nice guy and will always give you a good laugh. If you have the chance to take him, DO IT!!
He never actually taught us anything- just did the assigned book work problems in front of us during the hour of class. His methods were hard to follow and he often made errors. I understand that profs make mistakes too, but this was excessive and made comprehension difficult. If you know a lot about pre-calc and are good at math, you might be fine
Matchett was my favorite prof!! He's really funny and makes the material as easy as possible. Show up and take notes if you want an A. I also HIGHLY reccomend sitting in the front, you will learn from him so much easier. He is an EXTREMELY easy grader and actually understands you are a busy college student. Highly suggest chosing him if you can!!
He's a very nice guy and seems to care about the students. He's older, so he's a bit hard to hear sometimes but as long as you go to class, pay attention, and practice problems outside of class you will be fine. His weekly quizzes are graded very easy, which is a nice grade booster. Exams aren't graded quite so easily, but you can use formula sheet
Matchett was the most accessible teacher I've ever had and also one of the funniest with his subtle and wholesome humor. He does regular office hours, stays after class, and even will let you come to his private room if needs be and stay as long as possible. You can even call his cell phone in the evening! If you need help in math, he's your guy!
Hes a very nice professor! Makes the material easy to understand and everything you need can be available online! Lectures arent mandatory but the notes are extremely helpful & can be used on some quizzes! I would highly recommend him! Hes very nice & willing to help anyone who needs it :)
For stats 145 he was very good. He truly cares about his students doing well and will help out your grades if needed. You get 6/10 points for putting your name on quizzes. Very easy grader and kind man. Homework is not graded. Put the time in and you will get an easy A. Highly recommend
Prof. Matchett had poor lack of communication skills, often taking weeks to respond to emails. He explains things in a way that only people who have experience in stats would understand. The quizzes he grades fairly easy, but the exams he really digs in. You don't get through a whole lot during the class, just one example if you're lucky.
Professor Matchett was an okay choice overall. Nothing really stood me out but he was very accessible so you could easily get the help when you needed. It was hard for me to learn his stuff from the lecture because most of the time he wasn't clear about presenting the new material.
Wasnt a very good teacher. Had a hard time learning based on the ways he teaches (too old school). Is not familiar using technology, and was very hard to learn during covid. Teaches in a different language to those who havent taken stats. Dont recommend him at all if you havent taken stats or even struggle with math in general.
Professor Matchett should be avoided. New material is convoluted with statistics terminology, so especially tough for students who are new to statistics courses. Don't bother trying to email him, unless you enjoy not hearing back until a week after you send an email. Yeah, definitely avoid him.
If you have to take this class online, choose someone else. He is a nice guy but is not that great with technology and his way of teaching online will just make it way harder than the class should be.
Professor Matchett is a really nice guy, he makes stuff easy to understand if you ask questions. Is very clear with the information in his lectures and will go over test problems with you. I knew nothing about stats before this class and it wasn't too hard to learn. Solid professor.
I would not recommend him. Though I know he genuinely cares about his students and is a nice man, he was extremely bad at responding to emails (even urgent ones), did not clearly communicate material at all, and made it very hard to follow. I have taken a stats course before so felt okay coming in but honestly felt so lost most of the semester.
Professor Matchett cares about his students and what he teaches. If you show up and take notes you should be able to get an A, he allows notes for everything.
Overall pretty good class there are about 4-6 projects through the semester that require some coding, but he helps explain it. You automatically get a C on the quizzes for just putting your name on it which is very helpful. Exams are not too bad they are pretty short just have to be able to retain lots of info, everything is open notes but the exam
I took this class in the fall of 2019. A majority of the time, professor Matchett did not know what he was teaching, the students knew more about the topic than he did. Although the quizzes and exams were relatively easy, he was very unorganized and did not know what to teach,
Not consistent with answers, most of the class was confused, minimal was learned. He should not be teaching anymore, he was unsure about how to do problems and would ask us how to do them. He put topics we never covered on the tests.
He's a very nice teacher and an easy grader. As long as you attempt quizzes and projects you will get at least an 80. Quizzes are pretty much exactly like tests. Definitely show up to class because catching up online is nearly impossible. Kind of hair brained sometimes but overall, a kind man.
Very unorganized and showed up to class late multiple times. He doesn't know what he's doing half the time and only uses a dollar store calculator. Quizzes are easy and you get a lot of points just for your name.
i took stats senior year of hs and did better then than now. its super confusing and does everything by hand rather than with the calculator. quizzes and projects are super easy and you get a sheet of ur own notes for exams. i feel like we could have gotten a lot more done in the class, everything felt very slow paced yet too fast at the same time
Matchett is a very nice man, just not sure if he should be teaching anymore. He's very old-school, and class is very hard to follow along with, especially if you're new to stats. You get a lot of points for just attempting quizzes and projects, but tests are harder. I didn't know what was going on half the time, wouldn't recommend.
Super nice guy! Most of the time in his class I had no idea what was going on, but if you put in minimal effort, you will do just fine. All you have to do is just try a little. Quizzes are easy points for putting your name on. Projects and the final can only make your grade go up. He gives you exam and quiz problems during class for practice.
He is such a sweet and nice guy, but half the time when he is lecturing you just have zero idea what he is talking about. I am confident in saying that I have not learned anything relevant in this class, and you can't read his hand writing. He is very generous on tests and quizzes (gives you 6-8 points on quizzes for just writing your name).
Matchett is such a sweetheart. Math is my worst subject and he basically held my hand through every project we did. He grades super easily so you can get gradeboosted from quizes and projects. I didn't do too hot on any exams but I didn't do any of the homework also. Still ended with a good grade. Would take Matchett again 100%.
The sweetest and most caring professor I have ever had. He spends the class time going over homework questions and then 1-2 problems of the new material. The homework is not graded or turned in which allows you to practice without stress. This was the first time I have gotten an A in a math course in 7 YEARS. He grades kindly and is happy to help.
Easiest A, whether you have any math skills or not. Get 60% on quizzes for just putting your name on it. Did not learn anything however and he is not very tech savvy.
Buddy should just retire, hes hard to follow and his handwriting is sloppy. Tests are hard, but definitely doable to pass if you study. His lectures are all over, and hes always questioning his own work, and asks us kids if "hes doing it right". Quizzes are nice and easy to pass though.
Professor Matchett was not one of my favorite professors this semester but was still overall very good. He lectures from the whiteboard but there were points in the class where he got lost on the material he was teaching which was not reassuring at all. He is a very generous grader, you get a cheat sheet for every exam and open notes for quizzes.
The way he went about teaching the class didn't work for me. I think he's a sweet old man, but I'd recommend any other teacher for STAT-145.
I think he cares deeply about statistics, but from what I've seen and heard about other stats teachers, he does things completely differently. I'd recommend any other stats teacher, even if he does grade lightly sometimes.
He is a really easy grader, but he is really hard to have as a professor IF you are NOT familiar with statistics beforehand. He is not very technical, and he is rather old so I think he just needs to retire. But, he is such a sweetheart and works really well individually.
Firstly, Matchett is the sweetest man I have ever met. He's very quiet, so I'd sit in the front if you want to hear him- also his hand writing is hard to read. I went to the tutoring center a few times and he was there, and he's super helpful with explaining things more thoroughly if you need more help. He uses his own textbook too which is eh.
I liked professor Matchett. He is an easy grader on quizzes. Exams are harder, but you can write notes on your formula sheet. He does teach out of his own textbook that he wrote.
I really liked this professor, he was a nice grader and good about answering questions. He does cold call in class, but you can pass on answering if you don't want to. He also is very positive if you answer a question and get it wrong and he makes sure to go over the problem until you get it right. Math is my worst subject and he helped me a lot.
The worst professor I have ever had. He has his own textbook which just made things more complicated than it needed to be compared to other 145 teachers. In class he is all over the place and is basically whispering and mumbling to himself. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! The other rate my professor reviews for him are deceiving.
We had a quiz on the forth day of class. He teaches out of his own book, and is a bit all over the place when he lectures. He is a bit old too be teaching as well. Would stray away from this professor.
Matchet is very sweet and genuinely wants his students to do well. This class is easy even if you put in the slightest bit of effort. He gives constructed feedback and gives free points left and right, yet y'all still complain about him. A lot of ppl in my class had a negative attitude because he's old, but he's one of the better profs here at UWL.
I really liked this professor because even though I have never taken stats before, he made it really easy to understand. He also gives you multiple cheat sheets for exams and finals. Another thing that I liked is that he was not a harsh grader at all and if you have any questions he will answer them to try and help you.
Hes a good professor and he doesnt grade tough at all
This is my last semester here at UWL and this may be the most chaotic class I have ever been in. He will laugh at his own jokes at the board while the rest of the class is confused. Our most recent exam was a 49% and he refused to curve the exam, while I got the highest in the class, which was 81%. Avoid teaching yourself and choose someone else.
Matchett is the nicest old man ever. With that said he's a little iffy as a calculus teacher. He isn't the greatest lecturer and exams a lot of your grade but he does give you 50% for putting your name on the paper. Note sheets can be used for half of them too. I'd say go for it over Wako and Benjamin Anderson but there may be better 1's next sem.
I missed class at least once a week and never did the practice problems. He would give 6/10 for putting our names on the quizzes and at the end of the semester he offered one page "projects" to make up full points for any missed quizzes or projects. I honestly really liked having him as a professor.
Really sweet professor, but sometimes harder to understand. You might want to know stats beforehand but he is willing to help explain stuff. He also has cheat sheets to help with quizzes and exams.
Matchett was overall a really good person and means well when he teaches. Though, he faltered mostly when it came to his lectures and explanations. He seemed like he has taught this class so much that he just mixes them all together and sometimes creates mass amounts of unnecessary confusion. Also he writes most entirely in cursive so beware.
If you are a hard worker and want an A take him, or if you just want to pass calc take him, if you have to take calc 2 I would maybe take a harder professor that will force you to know and learn more. He is a really good guy and had office hours every day and loved to answer questions. Quizzes every Friday, 4 projects, if you try a little you pass
Matchett is a sweet professor, though his lectures can be confusing at times. The class is fairly easy if you put in the effort - use the free cheat sheets, attend study sessions, and try unstuck ai for extra prep. Overall, a solid choice.
he is not a very good explainer but I will say that he does allow open note quizzes which are helpful. the second test you take is unbearable and as the semester goes on, it becomes impossible for people to show up to class because he just mumbles to himself and does not explain what is happening.
Sweet man, but sometimes difficult to learn from. Seems like he's been doing Precalc for so long that he just writes and solves problems from muscle memory. Good grader, and lets you use notes/computer/phone (as a calculator..) on quizzes. Occassional group projects. Overall nice guy, just lacks explaining as simply as the class would like.
Dr. Matchett is a good and smart guy, but he lectures to the whiteboard very quietly and all over the place. It is pretty hard to follow along but this is an easy class to pass. He is always willing to help and answer questions, but the lectures are confusing. He wants you to succeed.
Very spotty lectures, exceptionally poor at teaching, and bounces all over the place. Jumps straight to homework examples instead of showing you the steps to do them. Class is easy to pass, but you come away not learning much. I would recommend finding a different professor, especially if you are a stat or math major like me.
Very hard to follow, doesn't explain anything, hard to ask questions, spends time on one problem for the entirety of class and then uses the last 10 minutes to go over problems that he actually puts on the test. Very hard to communicate with, very smart guy but shouldn't be a teacher.
He was very nice and approachable. Every quiz you were allowed calculators, computers, notes, as well as the first 2 exams you got to just use calculators. However, he was not a very good teacher as you went in to class and practically had to teach yourself. And for the final no calculators even though we spent whole year being taught with them.
This class is very lecture heavy but you still end up having to teach yourself half the information. He speaks quietly, doesn't convey information well, and will sometimes miss raised hands. You learn to use calculators and notes with the first two exams but you aren't allowed to with the last two. Overall a very frustrating course.
Took precalc in hs and was still very confused with how he taught the content. He's disorganized and frequently does problems wrong. Most of class is watching him stumble through problems on the board while he mutters to himself. Also an awful grader. He only looks at the answer and not the work, and doesn't post answer keys after the first test.
There are 3 exams, a final exam, weekly quizzes and a couple group projects. If you want a decent professor this is the guy, but it may be difficult to understand how he teaches it if you don't already know about Pre-Calc. He is older and rushes lectures becoming difficult to understand.
Prof Matchett is not a good option for people who struggle with math!!! take it from me. He is a very sweet guy but his teaching style is outdated and very confusing. I wouldnt have him as your first choice, but he does a lot of group quizzes which is very nice
Pre-class was challenging, pay attention in class, as nothing is recorded. Has a couple of group quizzes with R, he write out the whole thing on the board. The final was very hard.
Dr. Mattchett is a sweet, caring professor who knows how to keep class light, even when we're not in the mood. Stats is tough, but if you keep up with the daily homework, the concepts are manageable. He genuinely wants to help you succeed. I recommend him!
I generally do good with math classes but this one was kind of hard. He writes in very messy cursive and rambles sometimes. He assigns problems and checks the notebooks, I did maybe half the problems but still got 5/5 on all 3 checks he wrote his own textbook so it's a pdf on canvas so you don't really need to get the physical one.
This man does not teach at all, however it's almost impossible to fail his class. Putting your name on the quizzes/exams gets you a c. Would not recommend if you have to take more math or want a good grade, but take him if you just want to pass.
He should be retired now... He was on Noah's ark with two of the other animals....
I really liked this professor, if you want to pass Calculus 1 I would take him. He's very lenient grader, group projects are basically completion grade and helps your grade a lot. He assigns a lot but just checks if you have something in your notebook, and he only check 4 times in the whole semester for easy 5 points.
This class I had to seek outside help to learn the material better. Despite having to put in extra work he is a very easy grader making it impossible to fail. You will have group projects, but they boost your grade up by a lot if you do well. Quizzes every week but they are basically a completion grade. Exams tough but not horrible. He is nice!
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Genuinely might be the worst and most inconsistent grader I've ever had before. I got points off for a fraction line being too short, and if you have to write anything out, he will take off a full point for missing a period. Dude wants you to do bad don't take him.
He's a nice guy overall but he is a terrible professor when it comes to teaching. I came into the course with a little prior knowledge on calculus but that didn't matter as he speeds through topics and doesn't even teach new topics when we get to them when he said he would slow down and teach them.
Matchett seems like an amazing guy, but his teaching style is very outdated. He does not lecture, only goes over the homework he provides every class day. Very homework heavy. I took precalc in highschool but he made the coursework much more confusing and I struggled to keep afloat. I taught myself from the textbook the whole semester, so bad.
If you struggle with math, I would not recommend Matchett. It's hard to follow his lectures because he mumbles at the board and writes everything in scribbles and cursive. He is a very nice guy, and he does care about his students, but his teaching is very outdated it is hard to learn. If you are not good at math, prepare to teach yourself.
Professor Matchett is a nice guy, but not a nice teacher. He doesn't grade too hard in my opinion, but the class is a lot of work. He insists on using the program R for many projects, and doesn't have any packets, we just go over problems in the book. His teaching is very unorganized, and sometimes he doesn't know how to solve problems
Matchett is not as bad as people paint him out to be. His course requires quite a bit of outside work and yes, sometimes you have to teach yourself but overall he is pretty chill and cares about his student's grades. Once you adapt to his teaching style it's fine. He'll give 100% on projects and notebooks if you just show you're trying.
He doesn't teach well at all. I had to learn everything outside of class using the textbook and YouTube. There is honestly no point to even go to class. He's a very nice guy. His teaching didn't work for me. He had to ask our class if he was doing the problems correctly. He gives some partial credit on exams but not much. Very exam and quiz heavy.
This class was extremely challenging and it didn't help that we were taught absolutely nothing. The class consisted of only going over practice problems, him working on a problem for 20 minutes, and not going over any curriculum. The entire semester I learned from a textbook and the tests reflected absolutely nothing that we learned.
