HW not required, final grade on curve, explained and went over EVERYTHING that would be on tests, gave out SAMPLE tests, basicly one those professors that if you don't sleep thru class, you'll pass no prob.
has a heavy Irish or British accent, sometimes hard to understand. His E's sound like A's :-)
He is so cool. You will learn or you will fail. Who ever fail must have not listen well. This guy is like so coolest professor with an accent. He is a dorkky guy, but cool.
good guy, but explaining techniques need work. had to learn alot of the stuff outside of class.
yea he is a cool teacher definantly a little different, very comical, talks to himself sometimes, i enjoyed his class to death
He is very organized, handing out the day's lesson on paper everyday, which eases note taking dramatically. However, doesn't appear to enjoy when students ask questions, seems to want to stick to the lesson plan, and not get distracted by questions.
He's one of the funnies proffesors at SPSU. He will show you "how to calculate how strong you need to make the walls of a goldfish bow." (his quote)Always adds funny comments to make the material more fun. Great teaching technique.
Scottish accent, very funny. Well organized, extremely well prepared for the daily lesson. Final grave on a curve (class avg = about a C)
he did one proof the entire semester and it was a derivation. he's a great guy, i wish that he would be a bit more rigorious.
Tests are a little hard, but he knows what he's teaching and if you take notes you'll do fine. Very laid back, no attendance policy. Scottish accent took some time to adjust to :)
Great professor. His accent isn't bad at all. Does a great job explaining things if you ask. Just for fun, watch his arms, they don't seem to move much!
easy compared to all calc teachers. wasn't bad or that much boring going to class. do ur homework and u will get an A only if u understand even though its CALC II.
His Scottish accent and mannerisms make the class quite diverting. He is clear and easy to understand and knows his stuff. Curves tests
Great teacher. Take his class. Easy to get and understand. Grades easy as well.
Hands down the coolest teacher at SPSU. Grading curve makes class easier than most, coolest freakin accent ever, and hes just an overall cool guy. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Great Teacher. Love his accent. Curves Test. Take him if you can.
I have no complaints with him. He is very straight forward and is always willing to help. I would strongly recommend taking one of his classes. Plus he has a cool Scottish accent.
Hard but fair. Gives the students all the resources and material needed to pass the class, but students will only get back the work they put in.
Awesome teacher who knows his stuff well and will go out of his way to help students make sure they know the concepts and will make sure you know what will be on his tests. Best of all,his sample tests are just like his real tests. Great precal and college algebra teacher, Highly recommended!
OK, Math is math and if you want to learn it right the first time... this is the professor to take. He is very fair and makes you think, but when you look back on the course you did learn more than somethings... you learned the course. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Professor McMorran made the class as interesting as possible. He knows his stuff and he teaches it well. It is not an easy A by any means. Go to class, listen, and do a little homework and you will be fine. He curves the class average too.
I enjoyed the class, he attempted to make it enjoyable. Go to class and take notes. Has handout homework assignments, but are fairly easy. Do the homework from the book and you should be fine. Reading the book for notes usually don't help. He has a particular method for the answer, and will test you on his methods. To me, they seemed a lot easier.
This is great professor and I learned a lot when I had him for my differential equation II. He made the class even more interesting than actual..
Great Professor. If you take notes and do some HW you should be fine with his tests. He made Differential Equations a great learning experience. Gives four Tests and that's it. No drops, no quizzes, no HW graded, and no mandatory attendance. Just try in the class and you should do good. Notes are very important, so I would recommend going to class.
Calc 3. Got by with teaching myself from the book, but would have been way easier to go to class. Notes are important, tests are straightforward (from the hw). Great professor.
Awesome teacher!! He knows what he is talking about when he teaches. Gives out homework once a week that is pretty easy. He is the head of the math department so he doesn't have a lot of extra time but if you ask he'll make time. The tests are straight from both the homework and notes, nothing you've never seen before.
We didn't get our first test back for eight weeks but he was fair about grading and extending the withdraw date. He gives a practice test which is similar to the actual test but you need to do the ungraded homework to understand the material. He also assigns graded homework. All answers are detailed so follow his exact steps to get full credit.
Great professor. Take him if you get a chance
Lively older man with a Scottish accent. He has 4 tests and a final that replace your lowest test grade. And no other grades. Occasionally, he does skim through material that should be emphasized, but nothing you can't cover in your own time. Homework is helpful and optional. Do the test review, then do it again. Note: I took AP calc in high school
His test are nothing like his practice test and the problems he goes over in class. He prefers to use to use Greek symbols for everything to only to over complicate things. He is also a slow grader so don't expect to know what you have in the class going into the final. We didn't get our scores to our 2nd test till the day of the final.
Yes, this professor assigns a ton of hw but it's only because he truly wants you to learn. His tests are exactly like his practice exams, almost to the point where it feels like you're cheating. He is very helpful and very knowledgeable. He is by far the best professor I have taken at SPSU. The class isn't a cakewalk though but I recommend him.
Fair grader on tests. Gives you a lot of suggested homework problems for each section, but homework is not mandatory (he doesn't collect it, it's completely up to you to do) but if you do it, no reason you cant get a high B or an A in his class. Gives you a practice test and makes his tests just like the practice test. I would highly recommend him.
He's a mild-mannered Scottish chap that makes even a tough math class very easy. Clear and concise in his lectures, and if something isn't clear to you, just ask. He gives practices tests with solution guides that are very similar to the test. Be aware, the only grades in the class come from the tests. Had him before and would take him again.
Dr. McMorran is an extremely nice guy, and I managed to pull a higher grade than what I thought I deserved. Unfortunately, the material taught in this class is extremely boring. He also had a lot on his plate this semester, so we did not receive grades back in a very timely manner. I hope this was a fluke, because he seems to be a great guy.
All tests are taken from the homework problems. He is available during office hours and the final is not cumulative.
Test are nothing like the homework he gives. I studied all the material many times and the test are nothing like The home work. I would not take him again.
Hes really weird. Tests in his class are straightforward, hes a harsh grader so be sure to complete a problem thoroughly with all units, symbols & important things labeled. There is a lot of HW & it counts for 30% so dont slack off on it. Tests are similar to practice tests that he puts online, but are a little harder.
CALC 2. Does not seem to enjoy teaching nor questions on material. Goes exactly from his handout notes. Lots of homework. Practice tests will NOT ensure success on the actual test only use as a guideline of the format. Polite in most interactions but there were displays of passive aggressiveness. I will not take any future classes taught by him.
Took him for ODE. It's a fairly easy class, but you need to do the optional homework if you want to really know the material. Follow along with the lectures and don't be afraid to ask questions! Bonus: the rare occasion I get to hear another Scottish accent is always lovely (expat here) - half of why I go to the lectures!
The first third of the semester was fantastic, until the first test. After the first test, he came into class and proclaimed that we were doing too well and tripled the homework. I asked him if it was intentional that he was assigning 6-8 hours of homework per night, he said it was.
All notes are posted online. Lectures are word for word the notes. Boring lecturer. Very slow, very tough grader! Didn't get first test grades until a month after the drop date. Mix that with unclear grading criteria and you will go nuts figuring out exactly what he expects. Book is terrible (Pearson), but required for MATLAB programs and scripts.
As a professor, he is everything you need and nothing you don't. He starts class promptly, teaches very straightforward, and is accessible for help. Homework is assigned, but not mandatory. 3 tests (one is dropped), one final, and attendance grade. He allows 6 skips. Tests are similar to practice tests. Study, go to class for an A. Would take again
He teaches the concepts well and you need to practice the problems to do good in this class. His class is based on 3 tests (one of them is dropped), attendance, and the final. Copy the notes before class so you can understand the concept. The tests are usually harder than the sample test and ask questions if you don't understand something.
The test are a lot tougher than homework problems. This class is more about memorization. He expects you to learn all formulas because he does not provide a formula sheet nor study guides. It's hard to know what to study since there is so much information and he randomly selects 20 problems. Avoid him if you can unless you can teach yourself.
The tests are harder than the homework. He provides practice tests and the type of questions on the practice tests are on the actual tests. You will need to memorize formulas, derivatives, antiderivatives, and special rules. This was what made this class hard for me.
Attendance is mandatory, but 95% of the class will be spent listening to him read straight from his lecture notes, which are available before the lecture anyways. Fairly boring, doesn't really elaborate on examples if asked. Assigns a lot of homework, but the tests are pretty easy, provides samples that match the real thing closely. Wouldn't recom.
Very boring class. I took a night class and he was one of the most impersonal teachers I have ever had. Grading is done by class average so hope you are in a dumb class. Homework takes forever as well and is graded online.
Prof. McMorran is good at teaching calculus 2, however the only downside is he can get irritated very easily if you ask too many questions. Webassigns are very intense, but homework is weighed more than the tests so if you do all of them, you'll get a decent grade in the class. Sample tests are good representations of the tests.
TONS of hw online for a grade. Calc 2 is hard, but he gives you practice tests that are kinda true to the test. Also grades on a sliding scale which is nice. Does not curve. Super clear and articulate, however he can be condescending when you ask questions. No calculators, so brush up on your Algebra.
As others have said "avoid at all costs". If doesn't see something he is looking for on a test he will stop grading the problem all together regardless of work shown and correct answer obtained.
You get the feeling that he's only showing up to clock his hours in. His lectures are literally him re-writing his notes (which are posted online) on the board. However, his tests are JUST like the study guides he hands out, with only some numbers being changed, so if you actually study you should make an A.
This was the most difficult class I have ever taken and Andrew Mcmorran definitely amplified that. I studied 20 hours and it still wasn't enough. The problem is he will stop grading a problem if he doesn't see something he is looking for regardless of work shown and answer achieved. Believe me his rating is misleading.
Notes posted online. Attendance graded. Lots of homework (normal for calc II) online. Practice tests given out before exams that are very helpful. Calc II is a difficult class but McMorran did a good job.
The assignments are extremely long and numerous
Horrible experience
I wouldnt recommend him to my worst enemy.
This class was already tough because of the summer being a half semester, but at no point did he ever let up. Just brutal.
Taking trig over the summer was one of the worst decisions ever! Soooo hard! But he was kind and helpful throughout the course. Homework is very heavy, but if you do it all you'll be prepared for the tests. He gave partial credit for every little part you got right, you could get an answer wrong and still get most of the points for that question.
Terrible experience.
Take norring instead. You wont learn with this guy.
poor at explaining the concepts, and move through the course to fast to understand what is going on. Test averages are low and does nothing to help the students understand what they missed.
Terrible at explaining and becomes irritated if you ask questions.
Mcmorran ensures that you actually learn the material. He clearly rubs people the wrong way because of this, but if you plan on taking calc 2, then he's a really solid choice for Calc 1. He doesn't hand out free As, but will still curve if the class average is too low.
Just awful. He is extremely condescending.
He's literally the most straightforward individual ever. He just reads word for word off his lecture notes during class, so he's not really prepared for questions. So don't expect those to be answered properly. Attendance is mandatory. And while he's a clear speaking, and easy to understand lecturer, his lectures aren't exactly exciting.
This class is already a hard class, but it is like he enjoys watching everyone struggle. He doesnt like to answer questions. Avoid.
I saw more of his back than I saw his face. He literally wrote WORD FOR WORD long problems that could be easily condensed. He rewrites WORD FOR WORD everything already posted online. Only got A's on tests because his test review is almost identical to his tests. He never answers a question. And he'll speak at the rate of a sloth.
Better to wait, than take him.
Currently taking him over the summer because I transferred from NY and my Calc credit didn't transfer even though I got a B. I decided to take him because I had no info going into it. Would not for the life of me ever do it again. Homework is ridiculous and won't even be covered in the notes. He reads not teaches and doesn't answer your questions.
He just reads word for word of his lecture notes during class. Lots of homework(all on WebAssign) that are very difficult towards the end of the course. He is very boring and each time I hear his lectures I fell like his casting a sleeping spell on me. Prepare to read the whole book yourself.
Dr. McMorran seems to get a pretty bad rap for giving his lectures based on his notes, but I found both the notes and lectures to be comprehensive and easy to understand. Course is very WebAssign heavy, but they definitely help you to prepare for the exams. Great teacher and great course as long as you're willing to put in the effort.
Professor McMorran is really good. He gives no-nonsense thorough lectures that are easy to follow.
The way Mr. McMorran is teaching is very easy to understand the material. But Calculus 3 requires you to study. To prepare for the class, make sure to: - Show up (6 absences allowed) - Do homework - Prepare for the test
Lecture is boring, straight out of the textbook almost word for word. Takes forever to grade stuff. I drop due to corona. Submit a wrong test and get a 0. He only give the test back to us couple hour before the drop time. Never get to explain myself (prior test grade are 70 and 95).
The lecture notes he posts online is what he goes through word-for-word in class. It's great for if you miss a class or just want some good study material. However, it typically takes him 3-4 WEEKS to return tests. Also, he tends to be a little harsh when grading. On the plus-side, he is accessible outside of class and is always happy to help.
Some would consider his straightforward lectures to be boring, but that's because the content is straightforward. He always has notes and homework answers posted on his site that are extremely useful. No pop quizzes, just make sure you can work the problems before the test and you should leave the class with a B or above. Good prof.
Took him in spring 20. There are 3 tests and 1 final. Attendance is about 5-6% of your grade and tests and final are the rest. He posts notes before the lecture and he goes over it in class. HW is optional. There are study guides that are similiar to the test so study that and you should be good. Each test has a in class part and a takehome part.
He may be a tough professor but study guide is basically the test, study the study and you'll get an easy A on his tests. Would definitly take his class again if needed.
Get ready to work for your grade! Had him for calc 3 online. We had 2 Tests and a Final. We also had a HUGE amount of homework for a summer class. It was A LOT of homework. Solid choice never the less.
All he does is lecture over his notes when having online class. It is very boring and it makes you want to fall asleep. In class, he asks if you have any questions over the hw and makes you present a random question similar to the hw. He gives a lot of hw which little is covered by the notes. I do not recommend him
If you wanna have that one professor you hate so much, take him. He just kept posting lectures that didnt help and literally smugly said that the class averages would keep on dropping(first avg was in 60's).He was late on grading 2nd test and made us take the 3rd one and gave lame excuses, when asked for some more time on the hw he didn't consider.
Dr. McMorran is very good at explaining the difficult concepts in Numerical Methods. I considered his grading to be too strict and his test involve a lot of time-consuming work. Because of how time-consuming the algebra was, I felt like I was being tested on how fast I could write and not my knowledge of numerical methods.
Terrible at grading in a timely manner. Lectures basically weren't necessary, because he goes through his notes word for word. Book was helpful. Grading was way too strict. I would just try to avoid him. I didn't learn much from him. I just taught myself.
The lectures consist of Professor McMorran reading over notes that he had previously copied from the textbook and posted in D2L. The homework consists of problems and concepts that aren't taught in class and you must complete homework presentations that consist of you going up in front of the entire class and working on homework problems.
His teaching style is very clear and at a good pace. There is some unfair representation of his lectures on this forum. It isn't that his lectures are just him reading the course notes, the notes that are posted are his actual lecture notes, he only posts them online so they may be reviewed outside of class.
His lectures aren't too unique. Writes the important stuff from textbook onto a paper and then teaches-simple way. His grade relies on only 3 tests and 1 exam. Nothing else so tank one of them and you can pack your bags. Miss the lecture, you're out for good. The tests are pretty easy as they are open note so that itself is one pro point
Dr. McMorran is a fine professor. I took his Calculus 3 course in the summer and had my hands full. Get ready for a lot of homework and only 3 exams. His lecture style is basically reading his notes word for word. If you put in the effort and time you will do fine. Oh, and did I mention A LOT of homework. Calc 3 is not easy beware!
This class is a lot of work and its was a struggle the whole time. He's very vauge on what is on the tests and just tells you to do the homework for a few hours a day. In class assignments are also very difficult as well. Only a few people get As and Bs on the tests. If you take him try to at least pass.
Overall, he is a good professor, but he has 4 tests worth 20% of your grade each and worksheets based on the class notes that count for the other 20%. It is 2-4 questions every class and he doesn't give partial credit. It is basically attendance but graded. His class notes are very detailed and the textbook is online, with practices that help.
*Calc III* Attendance is strongly advised. Each class you do a worksheet and at the end he sums the points and weights it as a test grade. Tests are tough, but he does curve them at the end. Homework was optional. Gives sample tests that help. I'd recommend working thru class note examples to prepare for tests. All in all I learned a lot taking him
Grades on a sliding scale. After the first 2 tests for both calc 2 sections, the test avg was 61.....but if your avg is the same "you deserve at least a C". He's straightforward with his test format and structured with his notes, but be wary bc he can make any problem the hardest possible version of itself. Not terrible but was kinda challenging.
This professor specializes in doing as little work as possible while making the class as difficult as possible. He reads off of pre written notes and rushes through 1 or 2 examples then expects you to understand the concept then has you answer a graded in class assignment on that days material with no help. Practice tests are not like real tests.
Great lectures with notes online. Your grade is determined by tests and attendance which is a two-question worksheet that if you get wrong, you don't get credit. He gives a lot of partial credit on the exams and a pre-exams that are very helpful for studying.
Nice professor. Reads off prewritten notes in class and notes are available online if you don't take notes. 2 or 3-question worksheet in class every class which was the only thing graded other than the tests. 20% for all worksheets and 20% for each of the 4 tests. Partial credit is always available on tests. Sample tests are beneficial.
High-integrity professor. Focus on learning the material and the grade will come. He provides adequate resources that aid the learning process. Performing the practice problems will prepare you very well for exams. If you take this professor you will learn, not just pass.
The class is graded by 4 tests and in-class worksheets so you have to be on your game. He gives sample tests to practice topics. Very knowledgeable and grades very fair. Every day a worksheet is handed out so you have to come to class every day. Take this professor to learn different eqns. If you want to just show up and pass steer clear.
Took him for Diffeq. Homework is not graded, Classwork which is 20% of your grade. He does lots of examples in class. Practice test before every test but the real test will be MUCH HARDER then the practice test.
Overall a solid choice for calc 3. Lectures are straight forward; reads from prewritten notes but still works through examples to help you understand how he got the answer. Daily worksheets are slightly annoying, but I understand why he does them, instead of just grading homework. At the very least, they're not really designed to trick you.
Great at explaining concepts but he's an EXTREMELY slow grader. Took 3 to 4 weeks to get exam grades back. If you're on the borderline right before the drop w/ W deadline, you have to make a academic future-altering decision based purely off of how you felt after taking the most recent exam.
He did a very good job with such hard material Calc 3 has to offer his notes and clear and very easy to read and understand and he makes the class easier to bear than my past calc teachers. He is very helpful but the only problem I really had was no calculator tests and our grade basically being composed of our 3 exams and final.
This professor managed to make Calculus III seem as easy as kindergarten level math, at least as much as he could. Amazing teacher. I just wished the class would have been graded by more than just tests for the sake of stress levels. You mess up one, you're pretty much screwed. The tests also intentionally had some curve-balls you need to prep for.
His lectures are great; he made everything very seem simple and easy to visualize. His online notes are very helpful if you miss class; you can practically learn everything just from the notes. The study guides are almost exactly the same as the tests, down to the order of the questions.
Tough but rewarding class. Professor has a structured approach - detailed notes, frequent worksheets, and 4 major exams. Partial credit helps, and Unstuck AI was a game-changer for practice prep.
Took Professor McMorran for both calc 3 and ODE. He makes concepts easy to understand, but I will say attendance is kind of mandatory. He has daily worksheets, but they are very simple and are not designed to trick you. If you miss class, you can email him and he'll let you make it up! I would def take him again if he taught other classes.
3 exams, 1 final. no homework. each class has a worksheet that is graded, super easy. He is very knowledgable on this material. the course is not hard, he posts all notes and theyre very helpful. he can be a tough grader but does give partial credit. he does expect you to know basic calc. you will be graded on worksheet, and exams.
McMorran is a pretty nice guy and his class is relatively simple in terms of structure. He'll give a worksheet for the day and you turn it in at the end of class. He'll spend class going over his handwritten work and sample problems. He has few works for you to be graded on but will tell you what will be on the test itself. Just show up to class.
I took this professor over the summer for MATH2202 (Calculus II). Obviously the course was accelerated due to the summer term being only 8 weeks long, but I think Prof. McMorran handled it well. Also, he gave the class quite a decent curve on the exams, and the in-class worksheets are not very difficult if you are paying attention and studying.
He was pretty solid at lecturing and explaining concepts. We had quizzes at the end of class usually so attendance was a must. The only thing is he grades exams really slow so we wouldn't know what we have got until like a couple weeks.
If you want no social interaction and only listen to lectures, then register, but this class did not work for me. There's one worksheet a day based on what he's supposed to teach you, but if you don't understand it, he won't help you. I know most people will like his class, but if you thrive off of classmates and talking stuff out, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He's a pretty decent professor, very straight forward and honest. He provides lecture notes and study guides which help prepare you for exams. The only grades are the daily worksheets, and the 4 exams. The final exam was not cumulative which was amazing. His lectures can get boring. But overall not too bad.
