he's a new prof seems like a nice person
Good Prof, jokes are crazy cheesy but good prof
I wont make fun of appearences cause it does not matter. but he has cheesy jokes which nobody gets lol but he is pretty good, knows his stuff except he goes through slides faster than monkeys go through bananas! Good Prof, Go McWilliams!

No need to attend class, he copies Heyd's notes but still finds ways to make mistakes. To McWilliam: Stop screwing with students, you terrible excuse for a teacher.
In lectures, I don't think he cares. However, if you go to him for extra help during his office hours, he does know his stuff and you can learn alot. The bad part is that he makes jokes and laughs at them, when they are not necessarily, laughable. :/
His teaching is garbage, but first year students should have no problems because course is based on grade 11 material + some grade 12 equilibrium
this teacher is BORING...he takes his notes from another prof and reads straight off of them as if they were self-explanatory. i didn't even bother going to classes because they just weren't worth it, i'd rather sleep.
killed us on our midterm.
solid understanding of course material, excellent communication skills. failed to cover 1 subject, left it up to the class. very reasonable man, easy to approach 1 on 1.
i like him coz he admitted when he made mistakes.. but not very clear when explaining the notes
He's an Okay once you get to know him outside of class. His tests are real tough and uses coins to hold down his slides. Overall an okay guy but hard teacher.
I thought he was one of the friendliest profs I have ever met. I thought he was very reasonably and very real. I thought he was very intelligent and he wasn't intimidating. I thought he was very helpful.
This class is hard to attend. I dont see anything wrong with the prof. but it is just material we covered last year. If you dont attend you have to possibility of falling behind.
Class material is a bit dry to teach, but also very hard to make it interesting. Fair and real prof. - always in his office during office hours
It's not McWilly's fault, but it's hard to make chemistry interesting to 200 students sitting on comfy chairs in a pitch black auditorium. He's a good guy though, always tries to tie in BEER to his lectures. The Lectures are online, so you dont NEED to attend class.
useless. reads powerpoint available on blackboard. the course was mostly review anyway
Even I can read out power point slides....don't go to lectures, all you need is to download the lectures from blckbrd...for me he is like air...was not helpfull at all...
God I can't hardly understand the things he is explaining to us. He is there for help but what he explains is all from the lecture notes. What kind of teaching is that he can't teach at all plus that means he can't hardly help and give right solutions to problems which is hardly similar to the tests
Judging from the blank stares I see every day in this class, it is clearly NOT the prof who needs improvement. I find him totally clear, but then, I do the hmwk and am not a dolt, like the majority of the ppl sitting in the class. Totally fair and helpful prof.
I may be biased for my hatred of chemistry. This course was new to me, and i found there was too much material to cover. His lectures are powerpoint doesn't properly cover examples in detail. Forced to drop. On the otherhand he's very approachable and seems to care how you're doing.
boring boring boring.. or probably it's just the course
Great prof. Always available to help students during office hours.
he is a huge ****!!!
ZZZzzzzZZZZzzzz.....what? is it over already? Man, that was some good 2-hour sleep. And that, my friends, what happened on every lecture. Sure he's nice and respects students, but MAN it's boring there. Probably cuz he just reads off his slides all the time...
People think that he has dull lectures and sleep through it, but its not the class, its the time the classes are held. Either Early in the morning or late in the evening, both times when people are too tired to pay attention. He's a nice guy, is helpful when you have a problem, and understands what the students are going through.
The course starts easy, gets hard at the end. His test questions are EVIL. But Very approachable, always in his office for office hours and always willing to schedule appointments. Lecture notes are thorough, and he's a fair marker. Not to Acess Center Students, this guy is completely flexible and helpful.
I have to agree that his class is boring but at least he cared about students, compared to other TAs, all they cared about was their money, but at least he really cared about his students, the only thing I found unhelpful was that when you ask him a question he hardly writes the answer down, all he does is make verbal sentence or phrases which is g
was a very good prof...well done
He's a cool guy, his online notes are quite helpful and if u just follow up with him you'll be ok, he's not that boring in class as many other teachers are, which is a real good thing...
McWilli is a cool guy..kinda like the "greaser" type. He's tests are real tricky but he gives good practice questions. The lectures are long and draining but he makes an effort by adding life-related examples to make it more interesting...it still doesn't take away the boredom or LONG length of the lecture. He also gives great lecture notes.
long lengthy lectures, everything he asks in the exam is practically in the lectures.more attention to lectures and you'll do fine.
okay so he could slim the waste band, but he's interesting, if you're in chem, you better be there for the right reasons, because if you are the course is not hard, and offers alot of understanding about organic chem and defining or discovering chemicals/compounds.
oh man... i never thought someone's jokes could be soo bad that it makes u cry!!
This guy is kind of a quandary when it comes to his class. He's great with outlining to us exactly what we need to know and how to use examples correctly. As well, his clicker questions let us see how exactly to do stuff in a timed environment which is great practice. However, there are no TA's, and no tutorials so gotta learn on your own.....

One of those profs that cares about students. He has to teach all the engineers so cant really give much individual attention. Lots of opportunities to get easy marks and I knew a couple people that didnt even need to take the exam to pass the class.Lectures are insanely boring and normally I'd skip a class like this but clicker questions are bonus
i never liked chem nor will i ever enjoy it, but he teaches it well and keeps the pace up. too bad it was a course for engineers so 100% of the course was review from grade 12. dont buy the text, its useless.
He is currently teaching CHY330. I prefer he find some other job than teaching this course. He does not know how to teach this course. I waste my tution fee and time by learning this course from him. How ever, the note he post on Ryerson blackboard are excellent and possibly they are not him.
If you don't do it his way you get a really bad grade. Just make sure you pay attension to get his way
Very, very, VERY good prof and a good man. He realized the majority of his students weren't in chemical engineering, thus paid no attention to lectures and thus were about to fail. Instead of getting offended at our insult to chemistry, he decided to allow us to pass the course on the condition we pass the final. Hence my C. Very grateful, McWilli!
he's a nice teacher, just don't break the rules in his class.
He knows his stuff, but most of the time he just reads off the ppt....to be quite honest, the only reason why i go to his lectures is because of those clicker questions =p
I liked Chemistry before I came to his lectures. He made me hate it ! His classes are useless , u come just to get a bonus for the clicker questions, the entire chemistry courses was based on self-studying and huge hatred to him,his useless teaching and stupid assignments. I hope he reads it!
he's a good prof if you really listen to his lectures.
choose another prof if you have the option!
I still don't understand why we had this chemistry prof. - The whole book was read without his help.
This guy is a joke. All he does is read off of the powerpoint. I could just skip every lecture, read the textbook myself and I would learn more than watching him attempt to explain important concepts. Pick another prof - any other prof if you have the chance.
took this class in 07' and had it on Mon. and Fri. mornings. fell asleep most of time and me and ma friend took turns wakin each other up just for the clicker questions. the prof? he knows his stuff but does not kno how to deliver it. other than that, tests and exams weren't that bad.
lookin at previous comments on him i dunno but i think hes changed. hes hilarious and taught really well and makes it very interestin. started likin chemistry cuz of him and nnow takin chemical engineering cuz of it. overall cool guy.
He teaches alright. Lectures can get really boring at times, but he does do a good job at explaining stuff. If you pay attention in his class and don't fall asleep, you should get most of what he's saying.
unfortunately this guy doesn't know how to teach and make his subject easy... he would know his lectures and subject but that doesn't mean everybody in his class should know everything. he is not a teacher at all. his lecture notes does not make any informational or organizational sense.i wouldn't stay his lectures if we dont have clicker questions
An excellent professor. People may dislike him for not letting them enter class - sounds reasonable, considering one lecture is only an hour long.. less even. What is the point of coming to class if you are 40 minutes late, with 10 minutes to spare? Reasonable. He is VERY clear, easy to approach, and overall seems like a nice guy. Funny too.
He is a great awsome all around guy! He told me not to read lectures or textbook just do as many questions as fast you can!
Very arrogant, hard to approach if you need help. Comes off as very smug. If you need help be prepared, otherwise if you don't have a clue about a certain topic he will make you feel like an idiot for bringing it up.
HE IS GOOD
Prof. Drew's take on this course is only to make students get into the habit of answering exam questions in 3 mins or less and as a result, he blazes through vague lecture notes. He transitions from being very helpful to being extremely rude on the fly. Unfortunately, ENG students are stuck with him for the most part.
VERY HARD PROF...HE MAKES THE CHEM VERY HARD TO STUDENTS....OVERALL NOT A VERY GOOD PROF
HE MADE CHEM VERY HARD ....NOT HELPFUL AT ALL...
Hes a pretty rude guy and he BLAZES through his slides. Dont bother asking questions, he will make you look stupid. His tests are SUPER HARD but you cant avoid it, do the online homework and read the text/his notes and you will do fine, he usually bellcurves anyways
well, his test basically is out of his lecture notes and the book is totally useless I spend lots of time on the book which was useless! his exams are full of tricks and the tricks not relevant to chemistry at all! the classes are extremely crowded and he doesn't care about the student at all!
boring and races to fast in notes
Horrible prof, goes through a chapter a week. doesnt explain well.. You have no choice though so to have him..
Good CHemistry teacher, loud and clear. However tests sometimes contained material not covered in class.
Not too bad. Lectures weren't very helpful, since he would only do a few examples that were relevant. Second midterm was really difficult.
One of the best profs at Ryerson. He is very clear and makes the material interesting. The second test is very difficult our year had a very low average. However, overall the evaluations are fair.
Very very dense course, I took it as an elective (stupid) and just didn't have the time to dedicate to it as much as I needed to. Not sure at all how I feel about the prof though -- sometimes he was very funny and engaging, and sometimes he was downright rude and extremely condescending. I'd probably recommend another prof for the course.
good prof, course is very hard, tests are not usually covered by the material in class. lectures are interactive and entertaining.
Helpfulness is neither excessive nor insufficient. Is careful to use proper terminology and good logical flow for explanations. Tests are much harder than the lecture material. spend more time on textbook questions over watching lecture material. More graphically represented problems, practice these if they are in the suggested questions.
Great prof. He teaches the course very well. Had him for CHY102, and yes his lecture notes do not cover all the materials in the textbook, however, you can go through the book yourself. I noticed most of the test questions came directly from the examples and practice questions in the textbook. so do those and you will do great.
The worst prof i have had!!! he is very neurotic prof i have ever seen during his office hours and after exams
Horrible teacher! Don't be late, won't let you in! I'm not sure he even knows what he's teaching, seems lost at times. SWITCH to a different prof if you can, it will be the best decision you ever make!
Bearable, but not recommended. Very knowledgeable, but not great at transferring this knowledge to students--goes too fast and doesn't explain in a way that is easy to grasp. Very, very unpleasant personality. I spent a lot of time with the textbook and got a great mark but I will not be looking back at CHY103 fondly...
Mostly reads off his slides. He records all of his lectures so attendance is not mandatory. If you review the slides and use the text book, you should be fine.
Useless lectures, doesn't show how to go about finding a solution to a question. Midterms marked very hard. Useless textbook, practice problems provide no help with what is tested. The simplest examples are done in lecture while the hardest are put on the midterms and exams. Avoid this prof and pick another one! Clicker participation counts!
Hate the fact that if your in computer science or math you need to take a chem, bio, physics... But anyways I only went to the class just for stupid clicker marks. He records his lectures so that you can always watch them later if you missed something.. which you will.
His lectures are very clear, although he isn't the best of the Ryerson chem profs his lecture were still very helpful to me and he also posts skeleton notes and the recorded lecture online. I enjoyed his chem lectures although his marking is extremely hard, you should definitely study his notes!
Amazing lecturer. His knowledge in the course was great. They are recorded and posted in case you missed something. Textbook was mandatory but could be used on all evaluations. Weekly assignments aided in studying and further understanding the material. Interesting topics were covered that you will use as you further your education in chemistry.
smartest man in the room
He likes to pull some jokes here and there to make up for the material that can be dry at times. It is best to go to class as there are iClickers (free marks!) and fill-in-the blanks. He also goes through different examples that are helpful to complete textbook problems, which are in turn very useful for preparing for midterms and final exams. :)
really awesome prof, posts recorded lectures for days that you're sick or just lazy to go to school, lectures help clarify concepts, he walks you through many problems
You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Lectures are posted online but it's better to attend lecture and follow along with him as it will help solidify your knowledge in the course. Super easy first midterm, harder second midterm and final. However, if you review frequently you'll get an A+ easily. A true blessing!
Lectures can be dry and confusing at some points, and he goes through concepts pretty quickly. Read the textbook and DO THE PROBLEMS!!
As someone who loves chemistry, this guy was the worst. Tries to be funny but his jokes r so lame. His lectures r so dry have to be in class because of clickers questions solved in class were so basic. I attempted all Q'S from textbook but IDK WHERE THEy got their questions from!! no matter how much practice u do it was not enough. SWITCH NOW!
To be honest, I don't really have anything fantastic or horrible to say about him. He met my expectation of a professor. His quizzes were fair game. His test were fair game. His assignments were mark-boosters. I truly hope we cross paths again.
Lectures are amazing he explains everything in depth and goes step by step. If you only watch the lectures you wont do so good, you have to do the textbook questions!!!!
The jokes were lame, and he doesn't really know how to explain concepts that well. He word vomits a lot, so that's a bit distracting. The second midterm was challenging, but the exam was easy. Not bad, but I would prefer another prof over this one.
Overall a great prof. While his lecture videos aren't too great compared to Noel George's videos, they served as secondary means to study and prepare for the quizzes and tests. I suggest studying the Mastering Chemistry and textbook questions as they prepare you well for the written evaluations. Also the Molecules Along Us project is TA dependent.
He's just mid. Nothing really to complain about, nothing really to be looking forward to either.
Did not enjoy his lectures. It took a long time for him to get to the point and when he did, it was still very confusing :( Did not do well on the sections he taught.
Three tests and an exam with a bunch of assignments on top of that. Weekly Zoom problem take up with a group quiz at the end. One of the assignments is basically an art project, good if you're talented, and bad if you're not. Most lectures are taught through bland prerecorded videos.
Dr. McWilliams is ok. He's not a professor which will make you hate the course or bring more challenges to getting a good grade. Its just that there are better profs than him (ex: Dr. George or Dr. Ghoshdastidar) who just make him look worse than he actually is. His lectures can be found dull which is the worst part.
He gives good lectures and I was able to understand a lot of the material just by going to class. Lots of reviews are harsh bc they compare him to Dr George who is very expressive and out-there. But if you study each chapter and do practice questions each week, and don't fall behind, you should do better than I did.
Yeah, choose Noel George instead. He rushes through the slides and dosen't explain any of the math problems. He expects you to go back to the recording later on AND LEARN HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM YOURSELF. Cause of this no point in going to his lectures. Even though he does have office hours, he is not helpful and makes you even more confused.
dr mcwilliams was OK. he kinda rushed through the material and expected you to figure out the calculations by yourself. he spent too much time cracking mediocre jokes and not enough time addressing difficult concepts. overall, though, you can definitely manage to get a good grade with professor mcwilliams, especially if you have a chem background
Lectures are okay, and goes thru content fast so be sure to read often to be up to date. The tests are trickier than you think so study hard.
He helped me out a lot. Go to him and talk to him if you are struggling and he will give you all of his support. He is wonderful. Thanks prof.
Lectures are ok. Textbook homework problems do not help with exams. Only study using past exams that they upload, some exam questions are pretty much copy and pasted form past exams.
Lectures are very hard to listen to, does not really explain questions done in the lectures that well.
Reads directly off of the slides, does not explain anything and rushes through the lectures.
reads off slides, doesn't really explains his steps, skips steps better to learn on your own
I really like his slides, he has added step by steps on how to solve each problem. He does start to skip steps though and assumes we know how he got to the answer. He really cares though! He goes out of his way to post helpful things and he's very approachable. I felt bad because nobody ever laughed at his jokes!
in lectures he "explains" the topics as if he's just talking to himself, not a class of 200 300 kids. his lectures r pointless, I would recommend the textbook to explain the concepts in more depth as he does do a great job during lectures.
Teaches up to standard; knows the content very well, gives "quizzes" to check your understanding (usually not found on slides but his explanations regarding these are very helpful), and slides are easy to follow. As a person, he is quite annoying, lowkey hella passive-aggressive, and his "chuckles" are almost infuriating but maybe thats js me hatin
He was ok, i didn't like his lectures because he would just skip to the example question answers and not work through them, and I feel like he was really condescending and got mad easily. I had to study aloot outside of class.
Reads straight off slides, and is extremely passive aggressive. I would highly recommend taking the course with Noel George…
Dr. Andrew McWilliams is a very kind man. His jokes kept us up early in the morning. However, Dr. Andrew McWilliams is paid to only read off slides. He doesn't even show how he arrived at the answer like Dr. Noel George does. He provides recordings, which others don't. However, I wouldn't take him again because it's hard to learn on your own.
Lectures are decent, but the exams are tricky. Study past tests and use unstuck AI for prep - it really helped me stay on top of the material.
mcwilliams doesn't care about helping his students. i tried asking him a simple question once and he wouldn't even look at me while he was talking. he cracks random jokes throughout his lectures and reads off the slides the whole time without even walking you through the problems. always choose dr george over any other first year chem profs!!
not much patience and occasionally rude, needed to study outside of class to understand material. you can still get a good grade if you have him, but you'll need to work more for it.
You are provided skeleton notes you could fill out during lecture. He records his lecture and his presented slides are filled out, however, he gets mad if he catches you taking a picture of his slides, so if you miss something you have to wait until the end of the week to review what you've missed.
READ OFF SLIDES, his slides weren't helpful at all, his lectures were so time wasting I didn't go to his lectures after the midterm instead I went to George's , highly recommend .
not good whatsoever. many awkward moments in lecture because of his anger outburst (student walking in 5 minutes late or taking a photo of the slides). could barely hear him although i sat infront (lots of mumbling then random joke is made). dont recommend but a good grade is possible if you self study.
